Too bad those are the only two options in your poll.

Imus made no excuses. He didn't shy away from accepting responsibility for his words. Let's see what comes out of his meeting next week with the Rutgers players and coaches.

I don't know about the left trying to mute free speech, but NBC has tainited itself in my eyes by giving Al Sharpton the stage on yesterday's Today show as spokesperson for African American outrage over Don Imus’ remarks.

He has no credibility on the topic of racial insensitivity. Just look back at his record over the years....Tawana Brawley, Steve Pagones, Yankel Rosenbaum, Freddy’s Fashion Mart, just to name a few.

Seeing Jesse Jackson leading protests in Chicago also made my eyes roll.

As Jeff Greenfield of CNN said on Imus' show yesterday,

Quote:
Jeff Greenfield: "...But, it is true I think that your show makes fun of black people in a different way than you make fun of white people. Which is, when your comedic staple does "Ted Kennedy" he doesn't sound like "Hulk Hogan", who doesn't sound like "Dr. Phil" who doesn't sound like whoever else you're doing. But I think it is fair to say, and I just read this by one African American columnist who made this point today, that when you parody black people they all sound the same, sort of a nineteenth century mushmouth minstrel thing. And I think that comes from a more general notion, that like all comedic insult type humor, you look for the most obvious thing to parody. If some of us put on weight you make fun of that, but when that gets into the area of race, and I think that's what happened with this admittedly idiotic and hurtful comment you made yesterday, you look for the most obvious thing, and in this context, in this country when you do that with people's skin color it's at a different level of insult. And one of the things that I think would be really useful in the two weeks that you're off, is not to swear off making fun of black people who do dumb things, I mean you know if Barack Obama or Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson says things that are hypocritical, I mean the idea that Reverend Sharpton gets to decide what's a racially inflammatory remark kind of shows that God has a sense of humor, but you may want to think about how you do that in a way that isn't the most obvious stereo-typical comment to make about someone's skin color. That's what I think about that."

The fact is that what he is did was stupid and inexcusable. But LS is 100% right that Sharpton should not be part of this discussion, except that he has a venue for it to be discussed.

I do not know whether Imus should be fired. I do not care. I would never listen to his show, nbot because he is racist but because he is old, dated, boring, and in my eyes not very smart or particularly funny or insightful.

Someone showed me this link to an article by former ESPN columnist Jason Whitlock. It was mentioned apparently on WEEI this AM. I thought it was a very well written article.

Good article and I happen to agree with it.

However, I also listened to the morning nitwits on WEEI and for them to chastise anyone involved with this, considering their own racist beliefs, is the height of hypocrisy.

Exactly.....those are the same idiots that compared a gorilla to an African-American child waiting for the bus to school.

What a shitty poll. I refuse to vote, I don't agree with either of those poll answers. I think 2 weeks suspension is enough. What he said was dumb, but everyone is honestly getting so overly sensitive about everything. I mean it's Imus, does anybody really take him seriously anyway?

Kosty, that column hit the nail on the proverbial head.

Whitlock was always one of my favorites on Page 2 when he was at ESPN. That article was fantastic. It is very hard to take Jesse or Al Sharpton seriously anymore. Whitlock's critique could be extended to encompass all of the news media. Most of what we see on the news is just a distraction as to the real issues.

I am a daily listener to Imus and have met him at an advertiser function in Boston.

First - he was dead wrong - I heard the comment live and knew this was way over the line.

Second, he is both brilliant and eccentric, taciturn aand talkative, high minded and base,.

Third, he could take this unique blend and probably would have been an excellent person to bridge gaps, especially since he is such an excellent interviewer.

My bet - he is on Sirius Satellite next, as they would like to have an alternative AM voice to Stern, and build a reason for people to renew
subscriptions.

Sirius is going to get an alternative voice to Stern's when the merger happens and customers have a choice of Stern or O&A.

as an xm subscriber, i'm trying to learn more about sirius. what do they have as far as sportstalk besides the usual boring mix of ESPN/Fox Sports?

anything good to fill the void of not having Jime Rome from noon-3 anymore? i can only take so much of cowherd/patrick

No way Imus goes to Sirius. Stern is king over there and has proven his worth by bringing in subscribers. There is a lot of bad blood between the two dating back to the WNBC days and Stern would go ballistic if Imus were to join his network.

My bet is that Imus resurfaces on terrestrial radio in 6 months in a much smaller and less influential role. Initially he won't be able to get the guests he used to get, they may slowly start to come back after a while. Perhaps he'll even resurface on Fox
