Lombardi believed his job was to lead the flagship institution rather than simply work for Jack Wilson. His allegiance was to the campus first and foremost. So it appears that the next person will hired to avoid such complications!

Comprehende?

My query to you was what evidence led you to conclude that they were primarily hiring someone to work for Jack, rather than to lead the campus. Everyone who gets hired for a job has to work for The Boss, so it would not surprise me if one of the qualities they are looking for is "gets along with others."

I will agree with what I think you are saying, to the extent that, if the chancellor that is picked is merely A Puppet Of Jack Wilson, then no, I would not want that someone, since a large degree of independence is needed to advance our goals. But, I have seen no evidence that that is where this is going, so I am keeping a hopeful and open - but cautious - mind. Let's get a closer look at these guys and see if they've got any game.

My vote would be Harris Patides. With Massachusetts a mecca for biotech and healthcare there are plenty of jobs for graduating students. With that said I think there still needs to be a stronger focus on science programs, Being a bio major and working in industry for a few years, I look back and realize that the buildings, classes, and programs are outdated.

At least the new science building is in the works. I'll save you all the rant I could go on for that dump Morrill.

another observation made to me from the academic world...

It is very interesting that the selection committee did not move anyone forward with current Chancellor or President experience; that it is highly doubtful the list of applicants did not include some sitting Chancellors; that the last thing UMass Amherst needs is a Chancellor that is not a seasoned leader in a very difficult environment.

Hard to know what to make of this...

And, again, it looks like out of town Alumni are pretty much shut out of the selection process. Nothing other than names solicited. No statements of intent from candidates, nothing more than their names and current positions.

It would be nice if the selection committee were to establish a blog or an online chat with the candidates to seek opinion outside the Pioneer Valley.

Both Lombardi and Scott before him recognized the importance of out of state Almuni. They met with them annually and encouraged open communication.

The on campus meetings indicate that there will be meetings with Alumni. I bet I can name the "usual suspects" who will be invited.

What ever has happened to the President of the AA/vice-chair of the Selection Committee, who never-ever shows up at athletic events...
or much of anything else?

I know at least one Charter Life Member of the Alumni Association, twice-elected former AA Board Member, long-term Chancellor's Council level donor who was not invited, Doc.... Wink

The BS saga continues...

BTW...I mentioned in a post that my wife and I dined at the UMass Club Sat. nite...

We were told that the AA Wine Tasting event schedule for this prestigious location was cancelled after only four people signed up...

seems that the AA in Amherst does not want to link the Greater Boston Club's site to the AA site, that the Club in Boston is pretty disgusted with what is going on in Amherst, that you apparently cannot register for events without logging in first...which begs the question as to how non-members can register on-line...

We were also told that there are many former AA Board members around who want nothing to do with the AA anymore...

but that is not all that surprising to us, is it...

I know where my volunteer time no longer goes...

Apropos of no other comments on this thread, let me suggest that it is in everyone's interest to, assuming of course that you have the means and time to do so, check out these candidates in person and see for yourselves who might be the best. Given the administrative, um, turbulence of the past ten months or so, it is crucial that we get this right. To the extent you can see, hear and even question the candidates and provide your feedback to the powers that be, I have to believe will carry some sway, especially if the feedback is overwhelmingly positive or overwhelmingly negative.

Just like many of us called, emailed or cajoled UMass (and Travis) to keep TF here, if you've got the chance to assess these guys in person, do it.

I agree that they should hire someone with a Umass pedigree. However the logical choice would be Howie Carr. He would come in and clean up all the hacks and get them off the payroll before their lifetime pensions with 90% of health care premiums paid kick in.

"lifetime Pensions" ? As opposed to what, Logan's Run?

I believe that npt3 is pointing out the Defined Benefit pension, now rare in the U.S., except in the public sector...
With a max 80% of one's hi-three, or a somewhat lower benefit with a survivor option (which was greatly enhanced by the Legislature a couple of years ago), it is a hell of a lot better guarantee than those who don't have anything other than their own Defined Contribution 401(k) plans...

especially if one can up the ante their final three years only...

So, with all of the candidates having done their campus visits, who do you you think will get it? IMHO it's between Holub and Pastides...

The question remains;
did any alum poster get invited to any one of the four alumni luncheons with the candidates?
