Going be purchasing a PS3 or XBOX 360 soon and was hoping some of yall could give me some insight on which system is better? Mostly going be used to play sports games if that matters at all. _________________ Any team, any time, any place |

I've got the PS3, which I think is the system to go with. The experience overall is fantastic and seems to improve with every software update. I have played the 360, but don't own it, so I can't give you a direct comparison. I think with it having a built in Blue Ray drive (and one of the best Blue Ray drives on the market, at that) makes it the clear winner.
As for games, the graphics are top notch, be it a fighting, action or sports title. I don't have an HDTV as of yet, so I am not able to take full advantage of the system as of yet. |

NCAA Football and MLB The Show in addition to GTA have looked amazing on my PS3. I no longer use the Sony DVD player I just bought a couple years ago because they look so much better on the PS3. Blueray is nice as well, even if they are a little pricey. _________________ UMass Hockey Blog:

i got my ps3 on thursday of last week. it looks amazing on an hdtv. i have only two titles socom, and resistance: fall of man, and the former is really, really great looking. unfortunately i have noticed neither of those games is in 1080 format yet, they both are playing in 720 (even though i have set the ps3 to play in 1080) so i don't know if games just aren't being made in the newer 1080 yet or what. socom was just released on the 14th i think so you'd think if the developers were going to do it on 1080 they would've.
regardless it still is amazing graphics and the movies and tv shows i've watched on it are fantastic. i haven't tried any blu ray disks though, but i may have to buy transformers just to get megan fox in 1080p. _________________ Owls will deafen us with incessant hooting! |

I have had both systems. I decided to keep the 360 because of the better quality of games, the 1080P capabilities, and the far superior online gaming.
This decision was before HD DVD lost the next-gen DVD war to Blu Ray.
My advice is that is if you are getting it purely for games, then the 360 is the better choice. More games, and they tend to come out first for the 360. However, if you also plan to watch movies and have a Hi_Def TV, then the PS3 is probably a better choice since it plays Blu Ray. _________________ Turns out, just because you write your name on a baby doesn't mean you get to keep it." |

Neither one seems like a smart purchase. Gameplay-wise aren't the sports games just as good on the PS2? They're basically the same games they've been making for the last 8 years. And stuff like Rock Band could be just as easily done on an Atari, no need for a $500 super system.
Another red flag specific to the PS3:
Total Console Sales in Japan last 4 weeks:
Nintendo DS 193,388
PSP 104,291
Wii 104,442
XBox 360 41,102
PS2 33,168
PS3 29,397
Bad sign if the Japanese console is not only trailing the American console in Japan, but also trailing its own previous generation console. Poor sales in Japan mean fewer games made by Japanese developers, who dominate the genres I'm interested in (fighting games and racing sims).
I don't foresee myself even considering purchasing one of these systems until Gran Turismo 5 is out, and that's been pushed back to the end of 2009. Screw it. I'll spend the $600 on my real car, do some track days. Pretend I'm a grown up. |

I have both and think the PS3 is a better choice. It has everything you need. Top notch BluRay player. Great upconversion. Wireless internet connection built in. It's a media server. You can use it to play all your mp3s and videos wirelessly from your computer to your stereo. Wireless firmware updates from the internet. Games look spectacular. It decodes dolby and linear sourround sound. It really is a great piece of equipment. _________________ 'Fight On' You Loyal Sons and Daughters of Metawampe. |

Does the PS3 upconvert DVDs via the component outputs? MY HDTV doesn't have an HDMI input. _________________ "Good times and riches and son-of-a bitches, I've seen more than I can recall"-Jimmy Buffett |

| Can you even run a Commodore 64 up there in Maine? I thought you needed electricity for those things. |

This is what I found as far as upconverting through component cables.
I just ran into this issue, the ps3 won't upconvert original DVDs over component cables. It will upconvert non-original DVDs, that's right, you will get a worse picture if you pay for the movie than if you copy it (presuming you use a dual layer DVD+R so you don't have any compression loss). Don't get too mad at the ps3 though, as I started looking at upconverting DVD players in stores and they all seem to have this limitation where they only upconvert store bought DVDs with HDMI cables. This has to be the stupidest thing I have ever heard where you get a worse picture if you pay for something than if you copy it.
So with new DVD's, no. With copied DVD's, yes. Doc, this is your excuse to buy a new HDTV. _________________ 'Fight On' You Loyal Sons and Daughters of Metawampe. |

| If you want all of the added features the PS3 offers then the PS3 would be good for you. If you are only interested in the gaming aspect, i'd go with the 360. Live is much better with more users, and in my opinion the graphics on an HDTV are much superior to the PS3. |
