When he was being discussed as coach for Yale, the reaction was pretty much "why would he leave UMass for Yale."

I think its a good hire for Maryland. I am not too familiar with the career paths of college football coaches. Is this a good career move for Coach Brown? On one hand, he's stepping away from being a head coach, on the other hand, he is probably closer to being a head coach at a bowl school. Any thoughts on this?

I think its fine when coaches leave (with class) to take a great job - it just means they have been successful and helps to recruit the next coach. The fact that he was looking at Yale makes me worry about what was going on in the athletic department to make him look around in the first place.

You've got to love that the Boston Globe has a AP article for the resignation of the head football coach for the state university of Massachusetts. Didn't feel like picking up the phone I guess.

Good for Don Brown, bad for the returning players who have no idea who will coach, coaching style, style of play, etc. Can't help but believe that the returning seniors must feel abandoned. No question, it is a dog eat dog business....tough for kids to understand!!

Coach Brown will be missed... UMass football is a pretty good job to have and I think we will have many highly qualified applicants.

GOOD LUCK COACH BROWN.... WE ALL WILL BE FOLLOWING YOUR PROGRESS!!!

I think Brown was WAY TOO leveraged by J.C. and 1A transfers - I am not sad to see him go. Tough time for the Assistants - when a head coach leaves for a Coordinator type role, few will be able to go with him.

Gene Defillipo is a Northampton native, in case anyone cares. Lots of local ties still.

Caught this error in my local rag today, the Washington Post:

“Before Brown's arrival, the team had just two winning seasons in the previous 12.”

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/05/AR2009010502759.html

Where did they come up with this??? The only “losing seasons in the previous 12” prior to Brown becoming Head Coach (he was the D cord for 98/99) were 2001,1997,1994.

I sent them a correction, wonder if it will get fixed.

I thought it was that paper I read before. In it they said NU only had 2 winning seasons in the last 12, not UMass.

EDIT: It was actually the Maryland athletic site which had the comment I had in mind. Looks like the Washington Post copied it wrong.

He also spent four years (2000-03) at Northeastern, compiling a 27-20 mark (.574) and leading the Huskies to the 2002 NCAA Division I-AA (now FCS) playoffs. Prior to Brown's arrival, the team had just two winning seasons in the previous 12. In 2002, Northeastern posted its best record (10-3) in school history.

Feel bad for the assistants. They work on a year to year contract. With a new coach coming in (unless it is one of the assistants) few, if any, will be kept.

Does anybody know or even have an educated guess as to why he wanted to leave so bad? It seems very bizarre that he interviewed for the Yale job.......

the university's financial problems made the job of football coach at UMass increasingly more difficult and much more of a hassle for Brown, to make a long story short.

he saw the writing on the wall that competing in the CAA, especially against the CAA south, at UMass is only going to become harder and harder
