This would require us to assume that BCS schools will no longer be recruiting BCS quality players out of state? In theory this might be an advantage over CAA schools if we were talking specifically about FCS players.
Although every NCAA institution is being affected in some manner by the economic crisis, some are in far better shape than others and won't be making the kind of cuts that UMass is. For BCS type players to mean anything, it would require BCS schools to stop traveling to recruit. I don't see it happening. |

And unfortunately, those BCS players will probably go to the Massachusetts BCS school. |

I'm using the BCS numbers as an indication of overall recruit quality in each state. Admittedly, that's not a very scientific measure, but I think it's unlikely that Mass has that many more BCS caliber players than our competitors' home states without also having a larger number of high level FCS caliber players as well.
I'm just trying to find a silver lining to this. If UNH, Maine and URI are all in the same boat as us (URI's boat is certainly leaking), they can't use in-state recruits to plug the holes as easily as UMass can. They also have much smaller enrollments, which means they can't support their programs with student fee increases as easily as UMass could because they'd need to use bigger increases per student to generate the same amount of money. If we get equal treatment by our respective state governments (a big if), UMass is better positioned to ride this storm out. That's worth something. Better than having no advantage. |

| Just remembered something: there was a guy wearing a Maryland polo shirt wandering around the stands at the UMass-Northeastern game. Anyone else remember him? He was there alone and definitely hadn't been to Parsons Field before based on the questions he was asking. Could something have been in the works before the season was even half over, or is that reading too much into a logo on a shirt? He didn't strike me as a UMass fan with nothing else red to wear. I don't know, I realize that's pretty circumstantial evidence, it's just something I remembered today when I was describing Northeastern's stadium to someone. |

Actually the complete description should need only three words, small high school! Of course "complete embarassment" could serve the same purpose. _________________ "Reciprovocation is the spites of life."

As fun as it is to make fun of Northeastern (and I'm 100% in favor of making fun of them) back to the original point about the man in the Maryland Polo.
At the time the UMass Northeastern game occured, Maryland was 4-2. I don't think they'd be looking to get rid of there defensive coordinator then. Also, as far as I can tell, the old coordinator left after the regular season for Kansas State http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/college/football/bal-terpsfoot109,0,1794032.story, which makes me further doubt they were planning on getting rid of him.
I didn't see this guy. I was at that game but the pocket schedule I had said it started at 1, when it actually started at 12. Therefore, I got there with only a few minutes left in the half and was more worried about finding a seat than what people were wearing. But if they were up to no good, I doubt they'd show up on the visitors sidelines of Parsons Field and ask UMass fans questions (which is what I gather from your post) while wearing a Maryland Polo. So, I am a bit skeptical.
However, in defense of the theory, the game occurred on 10/11/08 and Maryland had a bye that week. So you never know. Try clicking on the Maryland coaches photos on their web page. Any of them look familiar (besides Brown)?
EDIT: I'm an idiot. At first rather than link the story I wanted to, I linked my students' final exam schedule. |

Heh, I'm not going to make fun of people who struggle to ID suspects from photo lineups anymore. Nobody on the coaching staff or in the athletic department jumps out at me, but just looking through the pics has me doubting my memory. The guy I saw didn't look entirely unlike Kevin Lempa, their safeties coach and Massachusetts recruiter, but his hair was definitely lighter.
Any chance the Brookline police or city hall keep public records of cars being towed? Because this guy was running around the street after the game complaining that his car was gone. Not that any of this really matters even if Ralph Friedgen himself was at the game holding NU's concession area hostage, I'm just in the mood to play football detective. |

Noooo! Kevin Morris is still listed as the offensive coordinator though!

I know some people will get on their "cant' hire a coach while we have one" soapboxes, but it's worth noting...
If UMass were to upgrade to FBS via the MAC, it's a strong assumption that the school will very much consider coaches FROM that higher level of football. So the idea of Whipple leaving Cleveland and the NFL for UMass is a minor stretch. But the idea of Don Brown leaving Uconn as DC for the HC job at UMass is not. Good for Don Brown, congrats on the new job. _________________ Welcome Back DK!
