Marcus Camby came off the bench to score 20 points as top-ranked Massachusetts knocked off number 13 Syracuse, 65-47, in the finals of the Rainbow Classic at Honolulu, Hawaii.

Camby bruised his knee early in the first half of the Minutemen's semifinal victory over North Carolina State. Massachusetts (10-0), which is off to its best start in 23 years, outscored Syracuse in the second half, 41-22.

John Wallace scored 22 points and Todd Burgan added 10 for Syracuse (9-1).

The Orangemen led at halftime, 25-24, before Massachusetts opened the second half with a 13-2 burst over the first four minutes.

Edgar Padilla gave Massachusetts the lead for good with a jumper for a 26-25 edge. Camby and Burgan traded baskets before Donta Bright hit a 10-footer to make it 30-27 with 17:43 to play.

Dana Dingle made a layup and two free throws around a basket by Bright and Camby capped the run by making one of two free throws, giving the Minutemen a 37-27 lead.

Syracuse closed within 41-32 after Burgan made a three-pointer with 13:38 remaining but Massachusetts scored the next seven points and was never threatened thereafter.

Camby added 11 rebounds, made 7-of-17 shots from the field and blocked three shots for Massachusetts, which shot 44 per cent (24-of-55) from the field. The Minutemen missed all eight of their three-point attempts.

Dingle had 16 points and Bright added 12.

Wallace, who was the tournament's Most Valuable Player, grabbed 12 rebounds. Syracuse turned the ball over 24 times and shot 38 per cent for the game.
