MHERST, Mass. --- Four players scored in double figures as the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team cruised to a 94-50 victory over the BABC All-Stars in an exhibition game today at the William D. Mullins Memorial Center.
Freshman guard Kyle Wilson (White Rock, British Columbia) poured in a game-high 20 points, while senior guard Shannon Crooks (Boston, Mass.) tallied 18 points, as UMass posted its most-lopsided exhibition win ever in the debut of first-year Minuteman coach Steve Lappas. Wilson was six-of-seven from the field, including four-of-five from three-point range, while Crooks had a game-high seven assists, no turnovers and three steals in 27 minutes of work.
UMass never trailed in the game, and after a 2-2 tie, took the lead for good with 18:57 left in the first half on a Wilson three-pointer. BABC closed the score to 5-4 after a pair of free throws by Steve Matthews with 18:39 left, but an 11-0 UMass run, capped by a Wilson trey with 15:51 left, pushed the lead to 12 at 16-4. The closest BABC came after that was nine at the 15:10 mark on a Matthews three-pointer.
The Minutemen led by as many as 23 in the first half, and took a 43-22 lead into the locker room, as BABC shot just 18.2 percent from the field in the opening half. BABC got no closer in the second half, as UMass hit the 80-point mark with 7:17 left, and the final score marked its largest lead of the game.
Junior forward Micah Brand (Middletown, N.Y.) tallied 16 points for UMass, while senior center Kitwana Rhymer (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) had 12 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. BABC was led by former Minuteman Jonathan DePina's nine points off the bench.
UMass hit 47.8 percent from the field for the game, while holding BABC to 23.9 percent shooting. The Minutemen hit 52.6 percent from three-point range, and 76.9 percent from the free throw line, while outrebounding BABC, 55-34, en route to their sixth exhibition win in their last seven attempts.
Game Notes: UMass senior forward Jackie Rogers (Syracuse, N.Y.) missed the game with a hamstring injury, while sophomore guard Anthony Anderson (Lynn, Mass.) did not play due to a coaches decision...Minutemen will play their second and final exhibition game on Nov. 12 against the EA All-Stars before opening the regular season against Arkansas-Little Rock on Nov. 16.
MHERST - Highlighted by an impressive shooting debut from Kyle Wilson, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team gave its fans plenty of reasons for optimism Sunday. The Minutemen pounded the BABC All Stars, 94-50, in an exhibition basketball at the Mullins Center.
The much-anticipated Steve Lappas motion offense produced plenty of points from several scorers. Four players were in double figures.
"We had 22 assists on 32 baskets," Lappas said. "When we're playing motion the right way, that's what you'll see. We made a lot of mistakes, but things that are correctable."

"I was really nervous today," Wilson said. "But I decided to just go all out and let it happen. Coming out and hitting some shots and contributing to the team is what I've dreamed about."
Freed of last-year's point-guard duties, Shannon Crooks played well offensively, displaying a better shooting touch than he has in previous years. He had 18 points and made 4-of-5 3-pointers. He had seven assists and no turnovers.
"You can't play much better than that," Lappas said.
"From the first day that they got here the coaching staff has been working with me on my shot, changing some things," Crooks said. "When you work on your shot you expect to shoot pretty well."

Former UMass guard Jonathan DePina, who was a late addition to the BABC roster, had nine points to lead the All-Stars. He received a warm reception from the Mullins crowd.
None of the candidates to play small forward emerged as a front-runner. Lamb was the highest scorer of the bunch with nine.
"I have to look at the tape," Lappas said. "They all played hard and they all chipped in, but there was nothing clear."
A Crooks jumper opened the scoring and the Minutemen promptly opened a 16-4 lead.
UMass extended its lead throughout the game. The final margin was the biggest of the evening.
NOTES: Senior forward Jackie Rogers was out of action with a slightly pulled thigh muscle. Lappas said it wasn't serious.
