MHERST - UMass coach Steve Lappas looked at the stats sheet after yesterday's 61-50 loss to Temple at the Mullins Center and was pleased with most of what he saw. But a look at the rebounding and second-chance points categories was enough to make him - or any coach - groan.
``Our (offense) was good enough to win the game, except for the offensive rebounds,'' said Lappas, whose Minutemen (8-14, 2-7 Atlantic 10) were outrebounded, 44-26, and outscored on second-chance points, 24-2. ``If you beat (Temple), you beat them ugly.''
``It's ridiculous to be manhandled like that,'' he added after Temple (7-12, 5-4) grabbed 18 offensive rebounds.
The Owls shot just 23-for-64 (35.9 percent) from the floor, but their rebounding gave them a winning conference record for the first time since beating George Washington in their A-10 opener Jan. 5.
``If you calculate what they shot on their first shot, they probably shot in the 20 (percent range),'' Lappas said.
UMass, which trailed throughout the second half, pulled within three points after an 8-0 run that spanned five minutes and included three points - his game total - from freshman Mike Lasme.
Anthony Anderson started the rally with a 3-pointer that cut Temple's lead to 48-40 with 9:43 left. Lasme hit a jumper with his toe on the line and later made 1-of-2 free throws to make it 48-33.
Jeff Viggiano converted a pair of free throws and the Minutemen crawled back to 48-45.
But Temple senior Alex Wesby ended the run with a turnaround jumper that bounced in with 4:38 left. That sparked a 6-0 run from which UMass never recovered.
Anderson led all scorers with 18 points and paced UMass with seven rebounds.
``It's really a problem when Anthony Anderson is your best rebounder,'' Lappas said of his 5-foot-11 point guard, who gave up five inches to Temple guard David Hawkins.
Viggiano contributed 16 points, five rebounds and six assists. He also committed four of the team's 15 turnovers.
Temple tried to pull away early in the second half when freshman Maurice Collins ran off eight straight points to put the Owls ahead, 44-30. But UMass responded with a 3-pointer from Anderson and fast-break layups by senior Micah Brand and Viggiano.
Collins and Hawkins each scored 16 points to lead the Owls. Freshman center Keith Butler was the only other Temple player in double digits with 10.
UMass, which has made a habit of making struggling big men look like All-Americans, gave up a combined 18 points and 24 rebounds to Temple rookies Butler and Antwayne Robinson. Butler and Robinson entered the game averaging 2.9 points and 4.9 rebounds and 6.7 points and 5.4 rebounds, respectively.
``Keith Butler played an excellent game,'' Temple coach John Chaney said. ``Maybe (the college game) is finally getting through.''

MHERST - What's next, duct tape?
All other attempts to patch the problems plaguing University of Massachusetts basketball 2002-03 don't seem to work for long. Just when it appeared the Minutemen had solved their woes with shooting and turnovers, they struggle with rebounding. Again.
Yesterday against Atlantic 10 rival Temple, the Minutemen defended well, shot as good as can be expected being a young team against Temple's matchup zone, and with less than five minutes remaining had a chance to win. Yet the Minutemen were dominated on the boards at both ends, enabling Temple to outscore them on second-chance points, 24-2. That was the primary reason Temple prevailed, 61-50, to become the first UMass opponent to win four games at the Mullins Center.
Temple (7-12, 5-4) had as many defensive rebounds as UMass had total rebounds (26), but where the Owls made their presence felt most was on the offensive glass, where they collected 18 boards and repeatedly put themselves in position for second shots after UMass had successfully defended the first attempt.
''If you calculate what they shot on their first shot, it was probably [20 percent], I bet,'' said UMass second-year coach Steve Lappas. ''The frustrating thing is those offensive rebounds. We shot the ball good enough to win the game and we guarded the first shot well enough to win. To get manhandled like that on the glass is ridiculous.
''I understand we have not been a great rebounding team all year, and we're weak inside. Physically, we're weak inside. It's not one of our strengths and it's been that way from the beginning. But this is ridiculous.''
Prior to its last two games, UMass appeared to be rebounding better. It outrebounded a taller and more physical Fordham team to mark the first and only time this season it had outrebounded an A-10 opponent.
Yesterday, UMass's top rebounder was point guard Anthony Anderson, who finished with seven boards to go with a team-high 18 points. Next was small forward Jeff Viggiano, who had five rebounds to go with 16 points. The Minutemen's top front-line players, starters Jackie Rogers and Gabe Lee and reserve Micah Brand, combined for five rebounds.
Temple countered with an exceptional effort led by forward Antywane Robinson, who had 13 rebounds (6 offensive) to go with 8 points, and center Keith Butler of Medford, who had 11 rebounds (6 offensive) and 10 points.
''[Butler] is a smart kid out on the floor,'' said Temple coach John Chaney, whose Owls, like UMass, are having a disappointing season. Still, Temple led by as many as 14 points in the second half, then silenced a late UMass run.
The loss dropped the Minutemen to 8-14, 2-7, with seven games remaining before the A-10 tournament. The game was scheduled to be aired on ESPN, but most of it was not because of satellite transmission problems.
Lappas was visibly frustrated with yesterday's effort, which came off a 71-45 setback Wednesday at Tennessee, where the Minutemen scored just 15 points in the second half. After lineup changes, one-on-one talks with players, and various adjustments, Lappas admitted no solution to what ails the Minutemen seems permanent.
''I've done it all and right now I don't know what I'm going to do next,'' he said. ''I know we have to rebound better but sometimes you have a season like this - plug one hole and another opens up. Right now [the concern] is rebounding. Hopefully, we'll still shoot well.''
![]() It wasn't the Temple/UMass of old, but the crowd got into it when UMass closed the gap. |
''We got our three best offensive rebounds during that stretch,'' said Lappas.
But with 4:32 left, Temple forward Alex Wesby hit a baseline fadeaway to put the Owls back up by 5. After both teams misfired, Viggiano was fouled with 3:23 left but missed a free throw. Then, after a scramble for the ball, he dived out of bounds and attempted to pass to Anderson. However, Temple guard Maurice Collins (16 points) stepped in front of the pass and scored at the other end. After Anderson missed on a 3-point attempt, Collins scored again to give the Owls a 54-45 advantage.
UMass never came closer than 8 afterward.
''It didn't seem like the intensity was there today,'' said Anderson. ''When you play against Temple, they don't give you much. You have to put up a lot of shots and make them.''
MHERST, Mass. - The players from North Cambridge Catholic High School recognized the big guy wearing No. 44 for Temple - the guy who collected eight points, seven rebounds, and two blocked shots in the first 10 minutes of the game.
It was the same guy who averaged 24 points, 16 rebounds, and 12 blocked shots per game while playing for coach James McGrail's North Cambridge squad in Massachusetts two years ago.
Temple coach John Chaney, on the other hand, had never seen freshman center Keith Butler dominate a game the way he did yesterday afternoon as the Owls scored a 61-50 victory over Massachusetts at the Mullins Center.
With several family members and his former high school coach and team in attendance, Butler totaled 10 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots while carrying Temple to its fourth win in five games. The Owls improved to 7-12 overall and 5-4 in the Atlantic Ten.
![]() John Chaney and the Temple staff sat back and watched their Owls kill UMass on the glass. |
Chaney had few nice words to say about the rest of his team.
The Owls picked up the victory even though David Hawkins, Alex Wesby and Brian Polk combined to shoot just 9 for 35 from the field. Butler and fellow freshman Antywane Robinson cleaned up many of those misses as Temple compiled a 44-26 rebounding advantage. Robinson had 13 rebounds.
"They're just making more of an effort," assistant coach Nate Blackwell said of the team's frontcourt tandem. "They realize at this stage of the game that nobody's going to give them anything. Points are coming hard. So they found out that's one way they can score."
Butler had three early putbacks as the Owls pushed to a 24-15 lead. The lead was 41-30 when Butler went to the bench after picking up his third foul midway through the second half. Within minutes, the Minutemen (8-14, 2-7) had climbed to within 48-45.
That's when Wesby drained a baseline jumper that hit every part of the rim before dropping through the net.
"The shots weren't going in for me all day, but I had to stay aggressive and keep shooting the ball," Wesby said. "There will always be games like this that we have to win by rebounding and playing good defense."
While Butler and Robinson's rebounding efforts spoke loudly, the quiet factor in Temple's victory was Maurice Collins. The freshman guard finished with 16 points and made two big plays in the final minutes.
After Wesby had given the Owls a 50-45 lead, Collins beat two UMass players for a long rebound off a missed free throw and raced downcourt for a layup. On Temple's next possession, he hit another layup off an inbounds pass from Wesby with just two seconds left on the shot clock.
The final statistics sheet looked as it does for most Temple games. Both teams shot less than 40 percent from the field. UMass attempted a season-high 30 three-pointers. And the Owls committed just eight turnovers. It was the rebounding differential that irked UMass coach Steve Lappas.
"We made very few mistakes on defense on the first shot," Lappas said. "But defense doesn't stop until you get the rebound. So I guess you can say our defense was half-good and half-horrendous."
The Owls were mostly on form with their matchup zone defense, once again extending it past halfcourt as they did in recent victories over St. Bonaventure and Rhode Island. UMass was sloppy with the ball in key stretches and finished the slow-paced game with 15 turnovers. Hawkins and Collins each had three steals.
"We're not looking for steals with that defense, but if it happens, it happens," Hawkins said. "Coach doesn't want us to be concerned with creating turnovers as much as just getting good traps on the ball. What we're really trying to do is slow the other team down when they try to get into their set, stop them from getting into a rhythm."
MHERST - Alex Wesby's shot from the baseline bounced from the left side of the rim to right side and for a moment looked like it would roll out. But instead it dropped back in with just under five minutes left in the game.

UMass never got that close again and fell 61-50 to Temple Saturday at the Mullins Center.
The game, combined with St. Bonaventure's win over Richmond, widened the gap in the Atlantic 10 East. At 2-7 in conference, the Minutemen (8-14 overall) are now three games back of the Owls and Bonnies, who are both 5-4. All three teams have seven games remaining.
UMass' already dwindling hopes for a trip to the National Invitation Tournament are also nearly extinct. The Minutemen would have to win all their remaining regular season games or go deep into the Atlantic 10 Tournament to get to the necessary .500 record required for consideration.
The Minutemen will play host to Richmond, Wednesday at 7 p.m.
UMass coach Steve Lappas said before the game that he was targeting seven as the number of 3-pointers the Minutemen needed to stay in the game with the Owls. UMass actually got nine (in 30 tries), but its inability to rebound negated the long-range shooting.
Temple outrebounded the Minutemen 44-26. The Owls turned 18 offensive rebounds into 24 points, while UMass only scored two points on five offensive boards.
"We shot the ball certainly well enough to win the game and guarded the first shot well enough to win the game," Lappas said. "So it's frustrating to get manhandled like that on the glass. It's ridiculous to be honest."
It's been a struggle at times this year for Temple freshmen big men Keith Butler (10 points, 11 rebounds, three rebounds) and Antywane Robinson (eight points, 13 boards), but the duo was dominant against UMass.
"Keith Butler played an excellent game," Temple coach John Chaney said. "He's a big kid and he did an excellent job today. In the last two or three games maybe a light has turned on in his head."
Anthony Anderson and Jeff Viggiano provided all nine 3-pointers for the Minutemen. Anderson made 6-of-13 and had a game-high 18 points to go along with seven rebounds. Viggiano seemed to find his missing stroke early, shooting 3-of-10 3s. He finished with 16 points, five rebounds and six assists.
![]() Jeff Viggiano gets tied into a pretzel going for a rebound. |
Anderson criticized his team's intensity after the game.
"More can definitely be offered," he said. "It didn't seem like the intensity was there today."
Technical difficulties kept all but the last two minutes of the game off of ESPN. The viewers missed a contest with minimal aesthetic appeal as neither team was sharp.
A 9-0 Owl run capped by back-to-back 3s by Brian Polk and David Hawkins (16 points) put the visitors ahead 24-15 with 6 minutes and 49 seconds left in the first half. The lead hovered around nine until intermission.
A leaner in the lane by freshman guard Maurice Collins (16 points) put the Owls ahead 48-37 midway through the second half.
A 3 by Anderson, followed by Mike Lasme's only basket of the game, and three UMass free throws brought the crowd of 4,787 to life, but Wesby's basket ended the UMass momentum.
NOTES: The Minutemen produced a statistical oddity with 18 assists on 18 field goals.

MHERST - As he sat at the table in the Mullins Center Green Room, fielding questions after his team's 61-50 loss to Temple, University of Massachusetts coach Steve Lappas made a difficult admission.
He didn't know what he was going to do next with his team.
![]() Steve Lappas tries to get some help for Anthony Anderson. |
Lappas is working under the assumption that there is an answer out there. There may be, but what Lappas is certainly unwilling to admit to his players and probably himself is that there may not be anything at this point in the season that he can do to get considerably better now.
The hope in Amherst is that a year from now, rookies Mike Lasme, Jeff Viggiano and Gabe Lee, who have each shown great promise at times, will be able to play well consistently. But right now, it's hard to know what to expect from each one from game to game as they've rarely been good on the same nights.
Lee had been the most consistent of late but showed his vulnerability against larger, inside players on Saturday.
Viggiano has played well overall, but his shooting, which Lappas was counting on, has been off.
Lasme looks like he's hit a wall after a season of nagging injuries. His three points against Temple were his first in three games.
"He's definitely playing tentatively right now," Lappas said. "I don't know if he's hit the wall physically or if he's shook because his last few games have not been good. There's a lot of places you can go to look for an answer, but it's that psychological mumbo-jumbo. You can take any guess you want. It could be that. It could be anything. I don't know."
One thing Lappas does know is that his team needs to rebound better, after a brutal performance in that department Saturday.
But that's not easily accomplished. Unless Lee adds weight, Jackie Rogers adds height or Micah Brand adds a mean streak in the next few days, the Minutemen can be overmatched inside by big opponents.
Temple freshman starters Antywane Robinson (6-foot-8, 210 pounds) and Keith Butler (7-0, 250) combined for 18 points and 23 rebounds compared to the 11 points and five rebounds produced by Rogers, Brand and Lee.
"We need to box out better and we need to play harder," Lappas said. "If that happens, they need to believe we can change what happened on the glass. It's a problem when (5-foot-11) Anthony Anderson is our best rebounder.
"I understand that we have not been a great rebounding team all year, and I understand that physically we're weak inside. It's not one of our strengths. It's been that way from the beginning, but this is ridiculous. Sometimes the stat sheet doesn't tell the story. This one tells the whole story."
Making matters difficult is that when one problem seems solved another one emerges. Lappas pretended to put his fingers in the holes of an imaginary dike.
"When you have a season like this, you plug this hole," he said blocking an imaginary leak, "and something else opens up. Now we'll focus in on rebounding and hopefully (continue to) shoot the way we shot tonight."
