Improved UMass set for Temple
By Matt Vautour, The Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 2/26/2003

PHILADELPHIA - The two teams seem to have a lot in common. Both are three games under .500, fighting for Atlantic 10 Tournament seeding position and are holding onto the slim chance of qualifying for the National Invitation Tournament.

The University of Massachusetts (11-14, 5-7 A-10) and Temple (10-13, 7-5), which play tonight at 7 p.m. at the Liacouras Center, didn't look very similar on Feb. 8 when the Owls beat the Minutemen, 61-50 in Amherst. In that game, Temple manhandled UMass in the paint. The Owls outrebounded UMass 44-26 and scored 24 second-chance points compared to two by the Minutemen. But Temple coach John Chaney said he expects the Minutemen to be better this time.

"I know they're playing a lot better than the last time we played them. I know we can expect, as always, a very tough match out of them," Chaney said. "I thought they played extremely well at St. (Bonaventure). That was an extraordinary win for them and I'm expecting them to play as well, if not better, at our place."

Chaney singled out UMass sophomore point guard Anthony Anderson's play.

"I think he's doing a great job," Chaney said. "I see him bringing a lot more patience to what he's doing rather than rushing himself and finding himself in trouble. He's really showing up as being a great one. I think Anderson is doing a great job."

Anderson's ball-handling responsibilities will be increased even further if freshman guard Mike Lasme is not in the lineup. Lasme missed UMass' win over Duquesne with a tendon injury in his left elbow.

"He's another ball-handler," Anderson said. "Now I have to keep the ball in my hands most of the time. It's easier when he's out there."

UMass coach Steve Lappas said Lasme is questionable, but he knows Lasme's toughness increases his chances of participating.

"I know he wants to play bad," Lappas said. "Whether mother nature is going to cooperate is another thing."

Lappas said the Minutemen will not only miss Lasme's ability to shoot over the zone, but to drive into it.

"He's not only one fewer shooter, but one fewer penetrator," Lappas said. "They're a team you have to drive and kick to the wings. His penetration is something we'll miss, even more than his shooting."

Temple is missing a piece, too, as UMass could be helped by the likely absence of big man Antywane Robinson. The 6-foot-8 freshman had eight points and led the Owls with 13 rebounds in the teams' last meeting and leads Temple with 5.9 boards per game.

"He rolled that ankle pretty good. I don't anticipate him playing this week. It looks like it's still swollen," said Chaney, who added Robinson's absence alters his team's style of play. "It changes it dramatically. We find ourselves bringing Hawley Smith in as a forward and a center on defense. Antywane played a forward and when Keith would get in foul trouble, he'd play the middle for us on defense. It changes the depth and us rearranging the players. When you go from a player 6-8 to a player 6-5, it's a big problem for us."

The Owls have won both games Robinson has missed, five of their last six and seven of their last nine. Their 99 points in Sunday's win over Fordham are the most they've had since 1988. But Chaney doesn't like relying on offense.

"I don't see the consistency on the defensive end. I would rather win games of course, but I'd rather win games the way I like to see them won," Chaney said. "I'm just afraid there will come a time we will not shoot the ball well. I'm not happy with the way in which we're winning games. For me to depend on this team to shoot the ball well when they've shown in the past that they are not capable of doing that on a consistent basis ... I think I've lost control of them from the standpoint of my philosophy. I don't think they've embraced it in the right way."

NOTES: Lappas has had trouble in Philadelphia since leaving Villanova to coach at UMass. He's 0-4 in the regular season in Philly with those losses coming by a combined 72 points.

Blackout rules apply
By Jim Pignatiello, The Massachusetts Daily Collegian Staff, 2/26/2003

Tonight's game at the Liacouras Center will not be televised.

For the first time in 20 regular season games, a meeting between the Massachusetts men's basketball team (11-14, 5-7 Atlantic 10) and Temple (10-13, 5-4 A-10) will not be on TV anywhere.

What was once considered one of the biggest college basketball rivalries in the country, one that was guaranteed to draw big name announcers like Dick Vitale and a spot on broadcast television, has gotten virtually no attention this year.

This year, the first meeting on Feb. 8, which Temple won 61-50 at the Mullins Center, was scheduled to appear on ESPN. But technical difficulties kept the "Worldwide Leader in Sports" from airing all but the final few minutes of the contest.

So, a rivalry each school could once count on for 80 minutes of national coverage along with attention from SportsCenter will garner all of two or three minutes for the entire season.

Whether the recent trend speaks of the downfall of the programs from the national scene or simply of the specific rivalry is up for debate, but either way, the lack of coverage hurts the programs.

Interesting, however, that tonight's matchup is so important for both teams, as they look ahead to the A-10 Tournament coming up in less than two weeks.

The Minutemen are trying desperately to improve their playoff seeding, which would improve their chances of success in the tournament. The first round of the A-10s are played on campus sites, as the third- and fourth-ranked teams in each division host games, while the top two teams in each division receive byes to Dayton, Ohio, where the remainder of the tourney will take place.

Currently in fifth place in the East Division, UMass would play at George Washington if the season ended yesterday. But the Maroon and White sits just one game behind St. Bonaventure - which it beat in Olean, N.Y. earlier this month - for fourth place in the East, which would mean a home playoff game.

The Bonnies have a tough schedule remaining, with George Washington, Temple and Dayton coming up, along with a rematch with the Minutemen - which could be a vital game for playoff seeding purposes.

UMass has gotten hot at the right time, as the motion offense - which doesn't rely on set plays - seems to have sunk in and the Minutemen have won three straight.

"It's a hard offense to play, and hard to teach," said UMass guard Anthony Anderson, whose team looked confused by the motion offense earlier in the year. "I knew we'd get better at it eventually, though."

Anderson's numbers have improved significantly since the offense has been hitting its stride. The Lynn, Mass. native averaged 20 points over the three-game win streak, including 25 in Sunday's 70-55 win over Duquesne.

"Anthony is a very good motion player because he's not only good with the ball, he's good without it," UMass coach Steve Lappas said.

Anderson and freshman Jeff Viggiano were the only two bright spots in the Maroon and White's earlier loss to Temple.

Anderson led UMass with 18 points and seven rebounds in 40 minutes of play. Viggiano chipped in with 16 points, five rebounds and six assists in 36 minutes.

In that contest, the Minutemen held Temple to just 35 percent from the field, but gave up 24 second-chance points and were outrebounded 44-26 on the evening.

Temple, which has won seven of its last nine, comes into tonight's game in a dogfight for a first-round bye. The Owls are just a half game ahead of Rhode Island for the second seed in the East and one full game ahead of the Bonnies. While they are in the driver's seat for the bye, the Owls have a tough road down the stretch, with games against the Bonnies, La Salle and Xavier.

Temple will likely be without the services of freshman power forward Antwayne Robinson, who sprained his ankle Feb. 15 against North Carolina State. Robinson dominated UMass underneath in the first meeting with a game-high 13 rebounds (six offensive) to go with eight points.

Temple and UMass may not be getting the national respect it once did, but tonight's matchup should have major implications for both young teams.

Temple too strong for UMass
By Matt Vautour, The Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 2/27/2003

PHILADELPHIA - The second half wasn't even five minutes old and the Temple players were already smiling and laughing during timeouts. And why not? The Owls lead hadn't dipped below 30 since the beginning of the half.

Even normally animated University of Massachusetts coach Steve Lappas was more subdued after intermission and actually spent some time sitting down. And why not? The outcome had been decided a long time ago.

The Owls hammered the Minutemen on the glass and the scoreboard en route to an 88-46 laugher Wednesday night at the Liacouras Center.

With the victory, Temple (11-13, 8-5 Atlantic 10) swept the season series between the two schools.

"I'm not unhappy at all, I'm very pleased with the overall effort," Temple coach John Chaney said.

"Obviously Temple was terrific tonight," Lappas said. "As terrific as they were, we were that bad in the other direction. When you come down here with inexperience, the bottom can fall out quickly and that happened tonight. We have a lot to learn and a lot to work on. I'm disappointed in the way we played and the way we competed at times."

The loss was UMass' worst loss since Dec. 27, 1985 when Michigan State pounded the Minutemen, 93-45 at the Lobo Classic in New Mexico.

David Hawkins and Alex Wesby each scored 17 points to lead five Owls in double figures. They were joined by Maurice Collins (14), Brian Polk (11) and Keith Butler (10), who also had a game-high 12 rebounds.

"Keith was great on rebounds. We spent a lot of time trying to get him to go underneath the baskets," Chaney said. "He certainly got his hand on a lot of balls today and he stayed out of foul trouble."

Temple outrebounded UMass 40-28 and had 22 second-chance points to the Minutemen's one.

Making matters worse, UMass turned the ball over 21 times.

"We got outrebounded and we turned the ball over a lot," junior point guard Anthony Anderson said. "You can't do that against Temple."

Jeff Viggiano was the lone Minuteman in double figures with 14 points, while Anderson added nine.

"We didn't come out of the gate very hard and we got manhandled the whole game," Viggiano said. "We thought we learned our lesson last time, but obviously not. We weren't mentally prepared I guess."

The Minutemen (11-15, 5-8) remain on the road and will take on Rhode Island, Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Ryan Center. The loss dropped them two games back of St. Bonaventure, which held off George Washington in overtime.

"We have to learn that if we don't come ready, especially on the road, this is what happens," Viggiano said.

The first four minutes of the game gave no indication of what was to come. UMass scored the first two points of the game and after 3-pointers by Viggiano and Anderson, the Minutemen led 8-7.

The lead was very short-lived. Temple scored the next 14 points and led 21-8 before a Micah Brand jumper stopped the run, but not the bleeding.

A three-point play by Jackie Rogers (six points, five rebounds) with 7 minutes, 3 seconds left in the first made the score 26-14, but UMass never got closer. The Minutemen didn't score again for the rest of the half. Temple took advantage, inflating its lead to 42-14 at haftime.

The Owls scored the first five after intermission to stretch their knockout run to 21-0.

Lappas, who has been hard on his team after some losses, wasn't sure how he'd approach his players in their practices prior to the Rhody game.

"I have to think about what's best for the team right now," Lappas said. "Lately I've been tougher on them. I'm not sure if that's the way to go right now."

Records fall in Minutemenís ugly loss
By Matt Vautour, The Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 2/27/2003

PHILADELPHIA - When the University of Massachusetts media relations staff creates next year's men's basketball guide, there will be several items to change in the records section that happened in Wednesday's 88-46 loss to Temple, as the loss was as historic as it was ugly.

The 30 3-pointers attempted matched the most ever by a UMass team, tying the total tried in its 61-50 loss to Temple on Feb. 8. The Minutemen made nine 3s both times.

Temple's 19 steals are the most ever against the Minutemen.

In addition to being UMass' worst loss since Dec. 27, 1985 (Michigan State, 93-45), it is the largest margin of victory in the 50-game history of the rivalry.

UMass' 21 turnovers are the most since coughing the ball up 26 times last month against Saint Joseph's.

The Minutemen's 14 first-half points are the fewest ever under coach Steve Lappas.

LASME PLAYS - After being listed as a game-time decision, UMass freshman guard Mike Lasme did play despite the tendon injury to his left elbow. Wearing a black brace on it, Lasme came off the bench and played 21 minutes. He made just one of the six shots - a 3-pointer - and finished with three points.

He banged his elbow just before coming out of the game for the final time.

"At the end of the game he aggravated it and then someone bumped him and he went nuts like somebody shot him," Lappas said.

Temple freshman power forward Antywane Robinson (sprained ankle) did not dress.

NIT HOPES FADE - With the loss, the Minutemen would now need to win their final three regular-season games and two in the Atlantic 10 Tournament to get to .500 and be eligible for the National Invitation Tournament.

NO UPDATE ON LAMB - Junior forward Raheim Lamb, who left the team temporarily for personal reasons, did not make the trip and according to Lappas, there was no change in his status.

ABSENT ASSISTANTS - Bill Ellerbe was the only assistant coach on the Temple bench as Nate Blackwell and Dan Leibowitz were both missing for unconnected personal reasons.

MISCELLANEOUS - UMass missed a chance to match its longest winning streak under Lappas, as Temple ended the Minutemen's streak at three games. The Minutemen are 3-11 outside of Amherst this year and 0-3 in Philadelphia. Lappas is now 0-5 in the regular season games in Philadelphia since leaving Villanova to coach at UMass. ... This was Temple's second-straight game with five players in double figures. ... Temple freshman center Keith Butler entered the game averaging 3.5 points and 4.9 rebounds and is averaging 10 points and 11.5 rebounds against UMass. ... This marked the first time in 20 games that the Minutemen and Owls were not scheduled for national television.
