NCASVILLE, Conn. - Ricardo Scott scored 18 points as Central Connecticut overcame a 15-point deficit in the second half and beat Massachusetts 46-45 Monday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
UMass (1-3) led 34-19 with 17:54 to go when Central went on a 22-7 run over the next 15:36 and tied the score at 41-41 on two free throws by Scott.
After Anthony Anderson and Micah Brand missed for UMass, Scott hit a 3-pointer to put Central ahead 44-41 with 1:35 to go. Marcus Cox's layup with 48.9 seconds remaining brought the Minutemen to within 44-43.
John Alexander's two free throws for Central with 10 seconds left increased the lead to 46-43.
UMass didn't get a 3-point shot attempt. A Jackie Rogers' layup at the buzzer accounted for the final score.
Scott scored 14 points in the second half for Central (2-1). He also added eight rebounds. Ron Robinson chipped in 11 points.
Rogers led UMass with 13 points and eight rebounds. Brand had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Central won without starting shooting guard Damian Battles, who was disciplined by coach Howie Dickenman for missing practice Thanksgiving.
Central avenged a 64-49 loss to the Minutemen last year at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

NCASVILLE, Conn. - Two minutes into the second half, it looked like the University of Massachusetts was headed for a blowout victory.
But the Minutemen went 6:56 without a field goal late in the game to blow a 15-point lead and lose to Central Connecticut State, 46-45, in front of 2,583 at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Trailing 46-43 with 10 seconds left UMass tried to get a 3-point attempt off, but Anthony Anderson's pass got deflected to Jackie Rogers, who went to the basket, hoping to get fouled, and laid the ball in as time expired.
After Jeff Viggiano hit a lay-up with 7:45 left that put the Minutemen ahead 40-30, UMass (1-3) couldn't make a shot as a Rogers free throw was the team's only point during that 6:56 stretch. Meanwhile, CCSU scored 13 capped by Ricardo Scott's 3-pointer that gave the Blue Devils their first lead at 44-41 with 1:33 left on the clock.
Junior Marcus Cox ended the drought with a floater to make it 44-43 with 49 seconds left.
Central (2-1) held the ball deep into the shot clock and the Minuteman defense forced them to settle for an off balance shot by Scott that missed the rim. Richard Pittman grabbed the rebound, but Micah Brand tied him up with 13.5 seconds left.
UMass got the ball on the alternating possession, but miscommunication between freshman Michael Lasme and point guard Anderson led to a turnover as Lasme threw the ball away.
Anderson fouled John Alexander, who made both free throws setting up the final play.
"I don't even know what to say," UMass coach Steve Lappas said. "You (almost) have to try and lose, to hold a team to 32 percent shooting and lose. Obviously we weren't trying to lose, but it's very hard to hold a team to 32 percent shooting and lose."
UMass led 28-17 at halftime and scored the first six points of the second half. The Minutemen got the ball inside to Rogers on the first two possessions and he delivered both times, on a jump hook and a lay-up. Cox, who played his first two seasons for UConn, scored on a baseline drive to give UMass its biggest lead of the game at 34-19.
Scott's 3-pointer ended UMass' run and started a 7-0 CCSU surge.
The run ignited the Blue Devils, who had struggled to score up to that point. They found the range while the Minutemen went dry. UMass shot 8-for-21 in the second half.
Rogers led the Minutemen with 13 points, while Brand added 11 and 10 rebounds. Anderson continued to struggle and made just one of 10 shots. Scott led Central with 18, while Ron Robinson added 11.
"We're not playing smart," Lappas said. "We don't know what we're doing out there right now."
"This was a great win for Central Connecticut basketball," Howie Dickenman said. "Our defense took them out of what they wanted to do."
The Minutemen (1-3) will take on Boston College Saturday at noon at the Mullins Center.

NCASVILLE, Conn. - It stands to be a quiet day in the University of Massachusetts ticket office today. The optimism that surrounded the Minutemen prior to the season has disappeared faster than Anthony Anderson's shooting stroke.
In last night's 46-45 loss to Central Connecticut State, the Minutemen delivered an offensive performance that was as hard to watch as it was for Steve Lappas to stomach as UMass blew a 15-point lead and lost to a Blue Devil team that was missing its top player.
"This one was bad. You can rationalize Hawaii because we played Indiana and Utah," Lappas said. "You give up a 15-point lead and score 17 points in the second half. It's unbelievable."
This was supposed to be a different team offensively for UMass. It was billed as the bunch that would bring offense back to a program that hasn't seen any in years. That has proved to be premature at best. After intermission, the Minutemen scored 17 points, matching the worst half in Lappas' brief UMass tenure.
It's hard to score so few against anybody, let alone a team that last week lost to High Point, a team that usually serves as a guaranteed win for bigger programs.
The problems have started with Anderson, a junior point guard who has struggled under the heavy preseason expectations for him. He's played just one complete game - against Division II Chaminade - in four so far this season. Last night he went 1-for-10 from the floor. If he starts playing better, he'll draw more defensive attention freeing up other people.
"I think Anthony is pretty shook right now," Lappas said. "He's struggling right now. It's one thing with one game or two games, but he's played good once in four games. It affects the team. Throughout the whole preseason, he's the guy people were expecting to take the lead. Right now, when he struggles we look like a rudderless ship. It had evolved into him being the guy."
With him out of sync, the Minutemen are at a loss to know who to get the ball to in critical spots. Central Connecticut did a good job denying Jackie Rogers the ball and Micah Brand did his all-too-common second-half disappearing act with just two points after intermission. Marcus Cox may have been pressing in his first game back in Connecticut after transferring from UConn, but he hasn't developed into the scorer UMass had hoped he would.
In truth the Minutemen are missing Shannon Crooks a lot more than they thought they would.
"It's disappointing because we know we have talent," Brand said. "We just need to come together and click. We have to stay up and stay positive and not point fingers."
The loss makes Saturday's game against a struggling Boston College squad all that more important. The Minuteman need something to save their own confidence and their fans would forgive some of their early struggles with a win over their instate rival.
Lappas was at a loss after the game.
"I don't know what to say," he said. "We need to readjust, get back to basics and doing whatever we need to do."

NCASVILLE, Conn. - Lack of execution befell the UMass basketball team in a 46-45 loss to Central Connecticut State.
The Minutemen failed to execute during a 21-8 Blue Devil run that encompassed most of the second half.
The same could be said as freshman Mike Lasme threw away an inbound pass trailing by two with under a minute to play.
Finally, UMass put the nail in its own coffin as a play designed for a game-tying three broke down to a Jackie Rogers lay-up as time expired.
"We're not playing smart," UMass coach Steve Lappas said. "We don't know what we're doing out there."
Combo guard Ricardo Scott led the Blue Devils with 18 points, including 14 during the decisive second half run. The junior was 2-for-4 from behind the arc, including a clutch trifecta with just under two minutes left to put the Blue Devils up 44-41.
"I believed it was going in because he is a money player," CCSU coach Howie Dickenman sad.
"I was wide open and it went down," Scott added.
Marcus Cox answered just moments later with a driving lay-up to cut the deficit to one. A strong defensive stop as CCSU ran down the shot clock gave UMass possession, but Lasme's errant inbound led to an intentional foul by point guard Anthony Anderson.
John Alexander hit both his free throws to push the lead back to three, prompting a timeout by Lappas to set up a potential game-tying play. Lappas said the play was designed for Anderson to come off a screen at the top of the key, but that was negated by a defensive rotation.
The second option was a Lasme backscreen for Brand shooting out to the wing but the ball was deflected to Rogers who instinctively went strong to the hoop for two.
UMass looked in control when, despite some cold first half shooting, a stifling defensive scheme staked it out to a 28-17 lead at the break. Unfortunately for the Minutemen, that cold streak continued in the second, while the Blue Devils chipped away at the deficit.
Junior guards Marcus Cox and Anderson were a combined 3-18 from the floor for seven points. The pair came into the game averaging over 18 points an outing.
"I think they're going to fall sooner or later," Anderson said. "It doesn't really affect me."
The offensive bright spot for the Minutemen was the frontline play of Brand and Rogers. The senior co-captains took advantage of a small-ish Blue Devil lineup to drop 24 points on 11-20 shooting.
UMass was dominant in the paint, outscoring CCSU almost three-fold. But that stat was padded by a successful first half. For one reason or another UMass was resigned to outside shooting in final 20 minutes, which led to two separate scoring droughts of over five minutes.
"We had trouble getting the ball inside," Lappas said. "They played good defense. We didn't get the same quality shots in the second half."
On the flipside, the Blue Devils took advantage, as their leading scorer, Scott, came to life in the second. He was supported by a balanced attack in which six different players hit field goals.
Despite the comeback, the Blue Devils never shot the ball well.
"You have to try and lose to hold somebody to 32 percent shooting and lose," Lappas said. "It's very hard to do."
For the Minutemen it's a step back with perennial powerhouse UConn and Bay State rival Boston College looming. But for the Blue Devils it's a step forward for this team and the program.
"This was a great win for Central Connecticut basketball," Dickenman said. "This was a win that had a lot of heart."
