Lee out for UMass game at Duquesne
By Matt Vautour, The Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/17/2004

PITTSBURGH - The news keeps getting worse for the struggling University of Massachusetts men's basketball team, as junior big man Gabe Lee will not play in Sunday's game at Duquesne and may be out longer.

According to UMass coach Steve Lappas, Lee's injury, which was originally believed to be a sprained ankle, is a torn ligament. Lee will need surgery after the season, but he's going to try to continue.

''You can tape it a certain way that makes it possible to play on it,'' Lappas said. ''He's going to be out on Sunday, then he'll be day-to- day.''

Lee is second on the Minutemen with 6.3 rebounds per game to go along with 9.1 points per game. He leads the Atlantic 10 with 45 blocked shots.

The absence of Lee for any length of time gives UMass a particularly small lineup with Rashaun Freeman and raw freshman Stephane Lasme as the team's only true big men. Sophomore Jeff Viggiano, who missed Wednesday's game with a charley horse, is expected back on Sunday. He'll see considerable time at power forward when he returns. Junior Brennan Martin, who has just six rebounds this season, becomes the emergency power forward.

Lappas had not made a decision Friday about who to start Sunday, with Viggiano and Lasme being the logical choices to replace Lee. Freeman will move to center. The game at noon will be televised by NESN.

The Minutemen will only have eight scholarship players available, forcing Lappas to use zone defenses regularly to keep his players reasonably fresh and out of foul trouble.

''That's got to come into play much more,'' Lappas said. ''With Gabe out, we lose our best inside defender and we haven't been great defensively anyway, so we're going to have to do some different things. We have to be careful with the tempo.''

The Minutemen (5-9, 0-3 Atlantic 10) will enter the game with a five-game losing streak and could have difficulty with Duquesne, especially with Lee out. The Dukes are big and deep and should be as tall or taller than UMass at at least four positions. Senior power forward Elijah Palmer has had a breakout season at power forward, averaging 14.5 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, while senior center Ron Dokes has shaken early season struggles and is averaging 9.1 points and 4.8 boards.

The biggest addition to coach Danny Nee's squad has been Martin Osimani, a junior point guard from Uruguay. The combination of his South American roots and pass-first mentality have caused some observers to call him ''Pocket Pepe,'' comparing him to ex-Temple Argentine point guard Pepe Sanchez.

The Dukes are 6-8, 1-2 in the A-10, but they're coming off Wednesday's 71-58 stunning win over Xavier at the Palumbo Center. They've won four of their last six and three of their losses have come in overtime.

Dukes settling into rotation
By Dave Mackall, The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, 1/18/2004

The rotation is in effect. Coach and players are settling in.

"For me, I know roughly when I'm coming into games. I see I am a role player and so, I prepare myself accordingly," Duquesne University freshman Kieron Achara said.

Since the start of the college basketball season, Duquesne coach Danny Nee has stressed the importance of keeping his bench players involved. Presently, he appears comfortable with a regular rotation of nine.

None is averaging at least 30 minutes per game. Senior forward Jimmy Tricco (29.9) and sophomore guard Bryant McAllister (29.4) are averaging the most.

As for the regular reserves, junior forward Jon Pawlak, at 19.6, is averaging the most. His 3.7 rebounding average ranks third on the team.

"I want everybody to be ready. I really believe that to develop the program into a winning program, they've got to be ready to play at any time," Nee said.

The four role players, such as Achara (15.7) and Pawlak, are averaging 16.9 minutes. The others are sophomore guards Jack Higgins (16.3) and Ryan Tricco (16.1). Higgins is the leading scorer among the foursome, averaging nearly double figures at 9.0 ppg.

As Duquesne's preparation leading to today's noon tipoff against Massachusetts progressed this week, the Dukes carried with them a mixed sense of pride and urgency.

Wednesday's unexpected 13-point victory over Xavier has provided Duquesne with an early opportunity to become a player in the Atlantic 10 Conference West Division race. The Dukes (6-8, 1-2) have won four of their past six games and can balance their A-10 mark with a win today against Massachusetts (5-9, 0-3).

Already, the Scottish-born Achara, who leads the Dukes with 18 blocked shots, has found a rhythm in Nee's substitutions scheme.

"I love the pressure," Achara said with his ever-present, rich accent.

Massachusetts is reeling. The Minutemen lug a five-game losing streak into Palumbo Center, and they are further hampered by the loss of starting center Gabe Lee, the A-10's top shot-blocker, with 44. Lee, a junior who also is UMass's second-leading rebounder (6.3 rpg.) and third-leading scorer (9.1 ppg.), damaged some tendons in his leg and is out indefinitely.

Nee's belief that his players are creating chemistry with each game should give longsuffering fans of the Dukes optimism for improvement as time goes on.

The team's four top reserves will return next season, along with the starting backcourt of McAllister, who is the Dukes' second-leading scorer (11.0 ppg.), and junior Martin Osimani, the A-10 leader in assists (6.1 apg.).

Veteran guard Tyler Bluemling, a junior who has appeared in all but one of the Dukes' 14 games this season and is averaging 6.2 minutes per game, also will be back for another year.

Add to the mix forward Sean McKeon, a 6-foot-9, 230-pound redshirt freshman who is practicing with the Dukes this season, and three 6-7 high school recruits, including two from the same high school, and, all of a sudden, there appears to be a formidible nucleus next season for success.

Through 16 games, DeVario Hudson and Brian Kelly of Decatur (Ga.) Columbia High School were averaging double-doubles -- Hudson 23 points and 10 rebounds and Kelly 15 points and 12 rebounds -- while the Dukes' other early signee, Chauncey Duke, is the leading scorer for Springfield Southwest Missouri School.

Achara, who came to Duquesne this season after a year of prep school at Maine Central Institute, is beginning to realize that something special might be brewing on the Bluff.

"I believe there is a lot to look forward to with this team," he said. "I would love to be part of the turnaround here, and I plan to be. I want to be one of the best big men in the conference.

"But for now, I know what my role is and I try hard to prepare myself for it every game. I have all the confidence in my team and in the seniors. We have the kind of team that can succeed. We just have to go for it."

Upset victory inspiration for confident Duquesne
By Phil Axelrod, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 1/18/2004

Duquesne's most inspired performances, for the most part, have come against the stronger teams on the schedule. Unfortunately for the Dukes, all but the 71-58 victory Wednesday against Xavier, resulted in losses.

Scouting Report

Matchup: Duquesne (6-8, 1-2 Atlantic 10) vs. Massachusetts (5-9, 0-3) noon today, Palumbo Center.

TV, radio, Internet: Fox Sports Net, KQV-AM (1410), www.GoDuquesne.com , www.redzonemedia.com .

Duquesne: Coming off a 71-58 victory against Xavier in which the Dukes made their first nine shots from the field. ... Elijah Palmer's 59.7 percentage from the field is the best for a Duquesne player since Alan Watkins shot 60.9 percent in 1990-91. ... Upset of Xavier ended 16-game regular-season win streak against Atlantic 10 opponents. ... Has had seven players lead or tie for top scoring honors, led by Palmer's five. ... G/F Ryan Tricco has come off the bench to average a team-high 5.3 rebounds in A-10 games.

Massachusetts: Is coming off a 77-71 loss at St. Bonaventure in which G Anthony Anderson had 26 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals. ... Has lost five in a row. ... Is led by F Rashaun Freeman (15.1 ppg, 7.7 rpg), Anderson (15 ppg, 3.5 apg, 45 3-pointers) and C Gabe Lee (9.1 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 45 blocks). ... Leads A-10 with 6.1 blocks per game. ... Is 0-4 on the road.

Hidden stat: Duquesne never has defeated Xavier and Massachusetts in the same season since Xavier joined the Atlantic 10 in 1995-96.

They led by double-digits in the second half of overtime defeats at West Virginia and Minnesota and in a last-second defeat at Richmond. They were up at halftime against Pitt. The only team to outclass the Dukes from the opening tip was No. 6 Saint Joseph's, which built a 25-point lead at intermission and coasted to a 78-61 victory.

Duquesne seems to save its lackluster efforts for home games against less-imposing opponents such as Siena, George Mason and Cornell. The Dukes lost to Siena and George Mason and needed a miracle finish to beat Cornell.

"It's not overconfidence," said Duquesne coach Danny Nee, whose Dukes (6-8, 1-2) play host to struggling Massachusetts (5-9, 0-3) at noon today in an Atlantic 10 game that completes a four-game homestand.

"It's just coincidence that we haven't played our best games against some of those teams. I don't think that's a trend. I don't think we approached them any differently. I think this is a huge game for us because it gives us a chance to put two wins together."

Nee hopes Duquesne can feed off the confidence and energy spilled over from its upset victory against Xavier.

"We should have a good feeling about ourselves," he said. "Our self-image is up this week. It's way, way easier to teach and make corrections when you're winning. They're listening to you.''

Nee has been preaching the need to concentrate on the little things, like boxing out underneath for rebounds, coming to meet the ball on passes and talking on defense.

"We're not good enough to play poorly or have parts of our game break down and still win a game," he said. "For us to be a good team, we need contributions from a lot of people."

Therein is the root of Duquesne's inconsistency. Only senior forward Elijah Palmer has maintained a high level of consistency throughout the season to lead the team in scoring (14.5 ppg) and rebounding (6.1 rpg). Because Nee doesn't know what he's going to get from the others from game to game, he continues to mix and match his players with a variety of lineups.

Senior center Ron Dokes has improved his production dramatically since he scored one point and grabbed one rebound in the Dec. 23 loss to Minnesota. In the six games after Christmas, he has averaged 12.7 points and 6.8 rebounds and is shooting 65.9 percent from the field on 27 of 41.

But Jimmy Tricco, the third senior on the frontcourt, has lost his shooting touch. Tricco, whose 42.9 percentage from beyond the arc ranked 17th nationally last season, is 8 of 40 in the past eight games.

"One of these days," Nee said, shaking his head. "It's going to all come together for Duquesne."

NOTES -- Nee said he can't talk about Drew Schifino, the 6-4 junior guard who recently was dismissed from the West Virginia basketball team. "He has to get released and contact me,'' Nee said of Schifino, a graduate of Penn Hills High School who would have to sit out the 2004-05 season and have one year of eligibility if he transferred to an NCAA Division I school. "We have one scholarship to offer and we're looking for a power forward who can help us next year.''

UMass bottoms out at Duquesne
By Matt Vautour, The Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/19/2004

PITTSBURGH - In a season not lacking for ugly stretches, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team reached a new low Sunday as the Minutemen were on the short end of a 88-62 pounding by perennial Atlantic 10 doormat Duquesne at the Palumbo Center.

UMass had looked at the first four games of the A-10 schedule as a chance to turn its season around with seemingly winnable games against La Salle, George Washington, St. Bonaventure and Duquesne. Instead the Minutemen couldn't find any momentum and lost all four. It will only get tougher now as UMass plays at undefeated and No. 6 ranked Saint Joseph's Wednesday.

''Of our last four games, I don't know which was the worst defensively,'' UMass coach Steve Lappas said. ''We started four freshmen in (Sunday's) game and freshmen don't know how to play defense.''

The loss extended a handful of ugly streaks for UMass, which fell to 5-10 and 0-4 in the A-10. The Minutemen have lost six straight games, their worst such streak under Lappas. They've lost eight consecutive Atlantic 10 games over two seasons and eight consecutive games away from the Mullins Center, including all six this year.

Duquesne coach Danny Nee said he was surprised at the ease of his team's win.

''I thought it would be a dogfight,'' he said. ''We controlled this game from top-to-bottom. Any time UMass made a run at us, we answered. I thought our kids did a very solid job of coming out and playing hard.''

The Minutemen were missing junior big man Gabe Lee, who suffered an ankle injury against St. Bonaventure Wednesday. But inside play wasn't the problem as the teams played evenly on the glass and UMass took advantage of its 17s offensive rebounds.

But the Minutemen played poor defense again, allowing the Dukes to shoot 54 percent (32-for-59) including 50 percent from 3-point range (9-for-18). UMass answered with air-balled jump shots and missed layups, including some that were uncontested en route to a 33.3 percent shooting effort.

''In the first half and the second half, we missed some easy chances that made it hard for us,'' Lappas said. ''That really set off a couple of their runs in the first half. We tried to play some zone because we don't have a lot of people, but they were home and they shot the ball very well. It's tough to play zone when a team shoots like that.''

Sophomore Jack Higgins had a breakout game for the Dukes with 24 points, while Elijah Palmer added 16 points and five rebounds.

Rashaun Freeman led the Minutemen with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Anthony Anderson scored 14 points, while Jeff Viggiano added 13 points and five rebounds off the bench.

Bryant McAllister and Anderson traded 3-pointers to open the game, but the Dukes scored the next four points and were never behind the rest of the way. Led by Higgins, who had 11 points in the first half, Duquesne built its advantage to 13 points at 33-20. UMass trimmed it to five late, but freshman Kieron Achara scored with 7.8 seconds left to give the home team a 40-33 halftime advantage.

''We thought the second half was ours because they were shooting the lights out in the first half and we figured they wouldn't be able to shoot like that in the second half,'' Viggiano said.

Instead Duquesne continued its hot shooting out of the break. A 3-pointer and a layup by Jimmy Tricco started a 19-5 run to begin the second half that put the Dukes ahead 59-38 and the game out of reach.

Lappas said he wasn't hard on his players after the game.

''You have to keep the morale up,'' Lappas said. ''We have to tell them to keep fighting. We're going to keep learning. We're trying to do something for the long haul.''

UMass big man's season in jeopardy
By Matt Vautour, The Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/19/2004

PITTSBURGH - The prognosis for University of Massachusetts big man Gabe Lee continues to be bleak. Lee, who missed Sunday's game with a ligament tear in his ankle, won't play in Wednesday's game at Saint Joseph's and will likely miss Saturday's home game against Temple. UMass coach Steve Lappas said there is a strong possibility that Lee will not be back at all this year.

''He's most probably out for Saturday and then he's going to be allowed to test it,'' Lappas said. ''At that point then we'll see. There's a good chance he's out for the year.''

If Lee's ankle responds to treatment, the team is hoping a certain method of taping it will enable him to play for the rest of the year and postpone surgery until after the season.

In Lee's absence, freshman Stephane Lasme made his first collegiate start. He had five rebounds and two blocks in a career-high tying 22 minutes, but he struggled throughout.

''He's in a tough spot,'' Lappas said. ''This is a kid who we think is going to be a good player, but in most programs, would have redshirted this year. But he's been our first big man off the bench all year and now he's starting. Hopefully it will hasten his development, but it's not good for us right now because he has to learn so much.''

Junior Jeff Viggiano played well at power forward with 13 points and five offensive rebounds. Lappas listed him as one of the team's rare bright spots.

''I was very pleased with him today,' Lappas said. ''I thought it was the best he played all year.''

TEMPLE GAME TIME CHANGED - Saturday's game between UMass and Temple at the Mullins Center starts at 2 p.m., not 1 p.m. as originally listed. The game was moved to accommodate ESPN2, which will broadcast it.

VIGGIANO BLOCKS - Viggiano had a career-high three blocked shots in the game, all three of which were impressive. After the third one, when Viggiano pinned a Bryant McAllister attempt against the backboard in the second half, referee Michael Kitts was impressed. He ran by the A-10 television crew and said: ''How about that block? Did you see that?''

BOWERS STRUGGLES - Freshman guard Artie Bowers' shooting problems continued at he made just 3-of-16 shots and air-balled four attempts from the perimeter. He did have a career-high eight rebounds, but had four turnovers as well.

NEXT UP - The Minutemen after the game traveled to Philadelphia to take on No. 6 Saint Joseph's, which is one of only four remaining undefeated teams in the nation (along with Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Stanford). The Hawks defeated Xavier, 81-73, at the Cintas Center Saturday behind 33 points by Delonte West (A-10 Player of the Week) and 28 from Jameer Nelson.

MISCELLANEOUS - UMass sophomore big man Alassane Kouyate was at the game but on crutches. Kouyate, who is from Mali, but went to high school in suburban Cleveland, had surgery on both knees in Ohio and has been away from the team since the first semester ended. He's redshirting this season and will have three years of eligibility remaining when he returns next year.

This was UMass' worst loss to Duquesne since Jan. 11, 1976, when the Minutemen fell 100-69.

Duquesne starting center Ron Dokes played just 15 minutes as he fouled out with over 10 minutes left.

UMass is trampled once more
By Rick Shrum, The Boston Globe Correspondent, 1/19/2004

PITTSBURGH -- Gabe Lee, the University of Massachusetts's best defensive starter, spent the afternoon on a folding chair with a throbbing ankle. That wasn't the only thing that hobbled the Minutemen yesterday.

Poor shooting, a dreadful start to the second half, and inexperience conspired against UMass in an 88-62 loss to Duquesne at the A.J. Palumbo Center in an Atlantic 10 matchup.

UMass (5-10, 0-4) dropped its sixth game in a row and remained in last place in the East Division. Duquesne (7-8, 2-2) followed its 13-point victory over Xavier Wednesday with another potent performance, converting 54 percent of its field goal attempts, including 50 percent (9 of 18) on 3-pointers.

The Minutemen were less efficient, shooting only 33 percent (23 for 69) -- 20 percent (5 of 25) from beyond the arc. They were at their worst at the beginning of the second half, when they had only one basket in six minutes, a span in which they were outscored, 14-3.

Duquesne thus expanded a 40-33 halftime lead to 54-36, and then breezed to an easy victory.

"It's hard to say what happened [when the second half began]. I'll have to watch the tape," said UMass coach Steve Lappas. "We missed a couple of layups. We also missed a number of easy shots in the first half, which set up layups for them."

Lappas lamented the absence of Lee, a 6-foot-9-inch junior who is a quality shot-blocker and rebounder, and was one of his few experienced players coming into this season. Lee was injured Wednesday at St. Bonaventure, and Lappas said he will definitely be out of Wednesday's game at Saint Joseph's and probably will miss Saturday's game at home against Temple.

"Then we'll test it," Lappas said. "There's a good chance he's out for the year. It's more than a sprain."

Stephane Lasme, a freshman, started in place of Lee and did not score in 22 minutes. But he had five rebounds and two blocks.

Out of necessity, Lappas started three freshmen -- Lasme, Maurice Maxwell, and Art Bowers -- and a sophomore, Rashaun Freeman, who was academically ineligible last season. That's four first-year players, likely contributing to Duquesne's proficiency. "We started four freshmen," Lappas said. "Freshmen don't know how to play defense."

Jack Higgins scored a game-high 24 points for Duquesne. A sophomore reserve, Higgins made 6 of 7 from beyond the arc, and was one of four Dukes to score in double figures. "I thought it would be a dogfight," said Duquesne coach Danny Nee. "Every time we went up, UMass would come back. But we answered all their runs and played well."

Higgins leads strong bench performance by Duquesne
By Dave Mackall, The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, 1/19/2004

"Instant Offense" is becoming Jack Higgins' middle name.

The sophomore guard came off the bench for Duquesne to score a career-high 24 points and supercharge the surging Dukes' 88-62 victory Sunday over outmanned Massachusetts before 4,418 at Palumbo Center.

Higgins, who was 6 for 7 from 3-point range, scored a team-high 11 points in 10 minutes during the first half to help Duquesne (7-8, 2-2 Atlantic 10 Conference) take a seven-point halftime lead.

"I'm feeling more confident, but my confidence overall has always been there," said Higgins, a former City League player of the year at Schenley High School.

Duquesne capped a four-game homestand -- its longest of the year -- with a flurry, winning the final two games against Xavier and UMass while taking three of four overall.

The victory over Massachusetts was the second in a row and the fifth in the past seven for Duquesne.

"I wasn't sure what to expect today, but our players handled it very well. Every time UMass came at us, we answered," Duquesne coach Danny Nee said.

Massachusetts (5-10, 0-4) dropped its sixth consecutive decision. The Minutemen started three freshmen and one sophomore and were without injured 6-foot-9 center Gabe Lee, the A-10's leading shot-blocker (3.2 bpg.).

"I've been more disappointed with some of our other losses. At least in this game, Gabe Lee was not in the lineup. He's our best defender," Massachusetts coach Steve Lappas said.

Lee, who suffered a knee injury last week, is out indefinitely with what Lappas said was "more than a sprain."

Duquesne shot 54.2 percent (32 for 59) and held Massachusetts to 33.3 (23 for 69).

"Duquesne has three seniors they can go to and they've got a good bench." Lappas said. "They have a lot of experience and it looks like it's starting to pay off."

In nine games since becoming eligible after his transfer last season from Cleveland State, Higgins is averaging 10.7 points per game and is shooting 50 percent (38 for 76) while averaging just 16.6 minutes.

"I know what Jack can do. He is a very capable player and I just hope he continues to keep bringing it every game," said Duquesne senior forward Elijah Palmer, the Dukes' leading scorer (14.6 ppg.) and rebounder (6.1 rpg.).

Higgins played 19 minutes -- two below his season-high -- and was very active yesterday, hitting 8 of 13 shots, including 6 of 7 from 3-point range.

"He doesn't worry about anything. He's very, very confident," said Nee, who recruited Higgins out of Schenley, when Nee was coach at Robert Morris prior to taking the job at Duquesne.

"I've always thought he was a great player, and now, as he matures, he has a chance to be a great, great player," Nee said.

Duquesne, leading 40-33 at halftime, put the game out of reach with a 14-2 run to start the second half as Massachusetts scored just one field goal in the first seven minutes. A pair dunks by Palmer on ally-oop passes from sophomore guard Bryant McAllister in a span of 1 minute, 17 seconds gave the Dukes a 59-38 lead, which eventually swelled to a 26-point margin at the final score.

"I was pleasantly surprised with how we got the game under control," Nee said. "I thought we had it under control from top to bottom."

Nobody for the Dukes played more than 27 minutes as Nee attempted to empty his bench. All but two players were able to get into the lineup.

Palmer added 16 points, McAllister 13 and freshman center Kieron Achara 10 points and 11 rebounds for his first career double-double.

Sophomore Rashaun Freeman paced Massachusetts with 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. He joined Anderson and sophomore Jeff Viggiano (13 points) in double figures for the Minutemen.

Dukes dominant in win vs. UMass

The future of Duquesne basketball is making the present a lot more entertaining for the Dukes and their long-suffering fans.

Rashaun Freeman loses out on the rebound to Kieron Achara.
Sophomore swingman Jack Higgins scored a career-high 24 points, making 6 of 7 3-pointers, and freshman center Kieron Achara had 10 points, a career-high 11 rebounds and 3 blocks to lead Duquesne to an 88-62 victory against Massachusetts in an Atlantic 10 Conference game yesterday before 4,418 at the Palumbo Center.

Senior forward Elijah Palmer had 16 points and sophomore guard Bryant McAllister 13 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists as the Dukes (7-8, 2-2) handed the Minutemen (5-10, 0-4) their sixth consecutive loss.

"When I come into the game, I think defense first. The offense is going to come," said Higgins, a transfer from Cleveland State who was the player of the year in the City League as a senior at Schenley High School.

"I've been playing basketball a long time and it comes easy to do what I have to do, what coach expects me to do."

Higgins made the most of the 19 minutes he played.

"He comes with his guns loaded. He brings a lot of confidence," Duquesne coach Danny Nee said. "He has no fear. As he matures, gets in the weight room and understands what we're doing, he has a chance to be a great, great player.

"He needs a lot of mentoring."

Higgins' scoring may have caught Massachusetts by surprise, but his teammates have seen him shoot like this often in practice.

"We know what he can do," Palmer said. "I'm glad everybody else is seeing it now."

Achara, a 6-foot-10 center from Stirling, Scotland, came to Duquesne from Maine Central Institute.

"Kieron's going to be a future star for us," Nee said. "I love his attitude and personality. He's so positive. He's pure and not contaminated by AAU basketball. It was so cold in the gym he played in back home you could hang meat in it. He played on a tile floor. It was a spartan existence."

Achara and Higgins, along with McAllister and junior point guard Martin Osimani, will form the nucleus of Duquesne's team next year.

But there's still a lot of basketball left for the Dukes this season.

"Everybody's figuring out their role on the team. We've all bought into it," Palmer said. "We expect them to come off the bench to give us the same energy we started with."

Duquesne opened the second half with a 14-2 run to lead, 54-35, with 13:41 to go. Palmer put an exclamation point on the spurt with two alley-oop dunks that seemed to sap the enthusiasm from the sagging Minutemen.

Palmer's first slam finished a fastbreak on a lob pass from McAllister and the second was a no-look flip from Osimani that caught the Massachusetts defense flat-footed on the baseline.

"Coach lets us freelance. If it's there, they're going to throw it up," Palmer said. "If they throw it up there, believe me I'm going to catch it. After the dunks I sensed their momentum was going down."

So were Duquesne's turnovers. The Dukes committed only four in the second half after having 10 before intermission.

"Our kids did a very solid job. Any time UMass made a run at us, we answered," Nee said. "We really have toughened up on them, and their effort has been off the Richter scale to please the coaches."

NOTES -- Duquesne's margin of victory was its largest against Massachusetts since a 31-point win in 1989. ... Massachusetts played without 6-9 Gabe Lee (ankle injury), the league's top shot-blocker with 3.21 per game. ... Duquesne had 21 assists. ... Dukes had a 40-39 rebounding edge. ... Duquesne plays six of its next eight games on the road, starting with Rhode Island Wednesday.

Unlike past, Nee provides the Dukes with some hope
By Bob Smizik, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 1/19/2004

On April 6, 1995, the following was written in this newspaper:

"... this guy is young enough, aggressive enough and brash enough that maybe he can make it work."

The guy was Scott Edgar, who was the newly hired Duquesne basketball coach, and he definitely did not make it work. Under Edgar, the Dukes lost 55 of 84 games in three seasons.

On Jan. 18, 2000, this was written in this newspaper:

"They're going in the right direction now."

The subject of that sentence was the Duquesne basketball team and, it turned out, it definitely was not going in the right direction.

Immediately after that evaluation was made, the Dukes lost 10 in a row and 13 of 14.

Since both of those sentences were written by me, it would figure to be the height of foolishness to praise the Dukes after their 88-62 bashing of Massachusetts at the Palumbo Center yesterday.

The Dukes have been so bad for so long, that the media take a slight glimmer of hope and try to make it more than it is. Edgar wasn't the only coach whose hiring inspired a brighter vision in the media. It was the same way with Jim Satalin, John Carroll and current coach Danny Nee, and, as is well known, the Dukes have never turned it around, never approached being a successful program since the 1970s.

More than that, a victory against the Minutemen is no cause for excitement. Not only was this their sixth loss in a row, but they started three freshmen and their regular center, Gabe Lee, the team's No. 2 rebounder and No. 1 shot-blocker, did not play because of an injury.

To further dampen any enthusiasm, six of the Dukes' next eight games are on the road, where they are 0-4 this season. It's true, they've won two in a row -- with the previous win against favored Xavier -- but any hope of a lengthy victory streak seems out of the question. And although they moved to 7-8 with this victory, a winning season seems unlikely.

If you're looking for more bad news about the Dukes, consider this: The team starts three seniors, who happen to be three of its top four scorers. You could make the case that a run at .500 this season is possible, but the future could be worse.

But there is hope.

Unlike many of his predecessors, Nee, in his third season, does not seem beaten down by the Dukes' losing. He continues to show a healthy passion for the game and his job. It's this passion that made him a winner at Ohio University and Nebraska. He's 57, but has the energy of a much younger man. His age, in fact, could be a positive. After his successes at Ohio and Nebraska, Nee seems determined not to end his career a chronic loser at Duquesne. He might not get it done, but he seems to have a better chance of doing it than his four predecessors, none of whom approached having a winning record.

The Dukes got a glimpse of the future yesterday when sophomore Jack Higgins scored 24 points, making 6 of 7 3-pointers, in 27 minutes and freshman Kieron Achara had 10 points and 11 rebounds in 25 minutes

Higgins, 6 feet 5, and Achara, 6-9 and 240 pounds, both of whom come off the bench, are part of the Dukes' future. Higgins is athletic. He can shoot, take the ball to the basket and rebound. Achara, who figured to be more project than prospect, looks as if he can play in the Atlantic 10.

Those two likely will move into starting roles next season with junior point guard Martin Osimani and sophomore shooting guard Bryant McAllister.

Nee probably got a bit carried away when he said, "As he matures, he [Higgins] has a chance to be a great, great player."

Even if that prediction comes true, the Dukes need more of an inside presence before they can become a successful program. If Nee gets inside help from the junior college level, the Dukes still have a way to go. But they're moving forward; they're making progress.

And you can quote me on that.
