Injured Lee out for season
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/24/2004

Coming off a miserable road trip in the midst of the program's worst losing streak in the past 20 years, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team got more bad news on the eve of its game against Temple at the Mullins Center. Junior Gabe Lee will miss the rest of the season because his ankle injury did not respond to treatment.

''He tried to jog (Thursday) and couldn't do it,'' UMass coach Steve Lappas said Friday. ''He doesn't feel comfortable with this injury.''

Lee, who was injured in the Jan. 14 loss at St. Bonaventure, will have surgery in the next few weeks. Lappas expects him to be back for individual instruction in the spring. He was averaging 9.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game and leads the Atlantic 10 with 45 blocked shots.

Without him, the Minutemen will try to end their losing streak when they return home at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Despite their collective struggles, the Minutemen (5-11, 0-5 A-10) and Owls (6-8, 1-3) will play on national TV (ESPN2). As part of the network's 25th anniversary of broadcasting college basketball, it will unveil its Atlantic 10 Silver Anniversary team at halftime.

Temple coach John Chaney comes into the game with 699 career wins, trying to become the fifth active coach and 16th ever to win 700 games in Division I.

UMass coach Steve Lappas has been on the short end of some opponents' milestones before. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski's 400th win came against Lappas' Villanova squad and La Salle's Lionel Simmons scored his 3,000 career point against the Wildcats.

''They dropped 3,000 balloons on us,'' Lappas said.

In both of those games, Villanova was the road team, while Lappas will be at home for this one.

''Let them do it at home,'' Lappas said smiling, pointing to Temple's Wednesday game at home against St. Bonaventure. ''It'll be more fun for their fans to do it at home.''

Lappas, who coached against Chaney annually in Philadelphia's Big 5 round-robin, praised his career accomplishments.

''He's a special guy and he has a special place in the history of the game. He's a hall of famer,'' Lappas said. ''He is a throwback like Bobby Knight, but he's a modern-day throwback. He stands for a lot of socials issues and things like that. He's a very humble guy. He's used his influence to try to help people. He's an icon in the city of Philadelphia.''

Lappas would like to avoid being a footnote in Chaney's history, however. He said there are two requirements for beating the Owls' matchup zone.

''You have to knock down some threes and you have to rebound,'' Lappas said. ''With Gabe out, we have to become the best gang-rebounding team around. Right now we have one inside scorer. So we're going to have to make some jump shots in the game. If we rebound the ball in this game, it will give us a great opportunity.''

The Owls enter the game at 6-8 (1-3 A-10), having played their usual gauntlet of a schedule. Temple's only nonconference game against a lower-division team was a win over city-rival Drexel.

Temple has struggled to score, averaging 61.4 points per game, the fewest in the A-10. David Hawkins and Mardy Collins have accounted for the over half of the of those points. Hawkins is the No. 2 scorer in the A-10 (behind St. Bonaventure's Marques Green) at 20.4 points to go with 5.1 rebounds and a team-high 2.9 assists per game.

Collins is next at 13.3 points and 5.5 rebounds.

UMass denies Chaney 700: Minutemen end 7-game skid
By George Miller, The Boston Herald, 1/25/2004

AMHERST - A 23-point lead with 14 minutes left had just evaporated and UMass was staring at its eighth consecutive loss.

That's when freshman guard Art Bowers stepped up. He rifled in a 3-pointer with 32 seconds left, and the Minutemen fended off Temple on two subsequent possessions to escape from the Mullins Center with a 66-65 victory yesterday.

The Minutemen (6-11, 1-5 Atlantic 10) snapped their longest losing streak since 1982 and denied venerable Temple coach John Chaney his 700th career victory.

``I had good rhythm, and once the ball came to me, I knew (the defender) was going to be late,'' said Bowers, who led the Minutemen with a career-high 19 points and had seven rebounds. ``I had that feeling.''

Photo
Rashaun Freeman had another good game, and with it locked up his 5th A-10 Rookie of the Week award.
UMass couldn't have played a much better first half, hitting 64 percent of its shots and seven 3-pointers in 11 tries en route to a 39-22 lead.

``We fought hard, and that's all I care about,'' UMass coach Steve Lappas said. ``We won't dwell on losing a 23-point lead. It's what allowed that to happen, some turnovers and some mistakes, that we need to teach our guys about. The way we won was probably better than if we had won by 15 or 18. We went down, we didn't lose our poise, and those are the kind of lessons we need to learn.''

The Minutemen built their lead to 54-31 on a layup by Jeff Viggiano with 14:18 to play. Temple (6-9, 1-4) promptly hit back with a 13-0 run, with seven points by David Hawkins, as UMass went scoreless for over 4 minutes.

Another Viggiano basket put UMass up 60-49 at the 6:53 mark, but the Owls then strung together 11 straight points, including eight in just 33 seconds, and Hawkins scored in traffic to tie the game with 4:08 left. His conventional three-point play put Temple ahead, 63-62, with 2:21 to go - its first lead since 4-2 - and Tyreek Byards jumper 40 seconds later made it 65-62.

Temple failed to extend its lead when Mardy Collins missed a jumper, and Bowers made the front end of a 1-and-1 with 43 seconds to go to pull UMass within two. The Owls' Michael Blackshear was then fouled and missed the front end, with Viggiano grabbing the rebound. Bowers took a skip pass and came free in the deep left corner for his game-winning bucket.

The drama wasn't over as Temple had two more possessions, but the Owls' Dion Dacons lost the ball out of bounds with 3.7 seconds left. Rashaun Freeman was fouled and missed two at the line, but Hawkins' desperation heave was well short and wide right.

``We haven't won any close ones,'' Anderson said. ``It's bad to give up the big lead, but not so bad when we pulled it out in the end. We definitely needed one.''

Freeman had 16 points for UMass and Anderson added 12 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Temple's Hawkins led all scorers with 22 (19 in the second half).

``If it comes, so be it. We'll get up the next day and go to practice and keep right on,'' said the 72-year-old Chaney of No. 700. ``I don't need the kids to feel that the weight is on their back to do that.''

UMass denies Chaney
Bowers's 3-pointer sinks Temple
By Chris Forsberg, The Boston Globe Correspondent, 1/25/2004

AMHERST -- Thirteen minutes into yesterday's Atlantic 10 matchup against Temple, University of Massachusetts cheerleaders began handing out placards adorned with gigantic `3's.

The gesture was a bit belated given UMass had already connected on 6 of 7 first-half 3-pointers, which staked the Minutemen to a 17-point halftime advantage. In fact, the Minutemen only connected on two shots from behind the arc in the second half, but one proved pivotal as Art Bowers's 3-pointer from the corner with 32 seconds remaining proved to be the difference in a 66-65 triumph at the Mullins Center.

The victory snapped a seven-game losing streak for UMass, which picked up its first conference win and denied Temple coach John Chaney his 700th career victory.

"The way we won might have been better than winning by 15 or 18 points," said UMass coach Steve Lappas. "We were down late, but we kept our poise. Those are lessons we need to learn as a young team."

The Minutemen (6-11, 1-5) led by 23 with 14:19 remaining, but watched that advantage evaporate as Temple heated up from outside and UMass got careless with the ball. Temple senior guard David Hawkins scored 14 points as part of a 29-7 run that tied the game at 60 with 4:08 left. A 3-pointer by Hawkins and jumper from Tyreek Byard put the Owls in front, 65-62, with 1:40 left, but Bowers (19 points) made the front end of a one-and-one before his 3-point heroics brought the crowd of 3,493 to its feet.

"The past two games I've been gaining more confidence," said Bowers, who registered a career-high 19 points. "When I got the ball at the end, the only thing I was thinking about was hitting that shot."

Temple (6-9, 1-4) had an opportunity to regain the lead, but Anthony Anderson swarmed Hawkins on the Owls' final possession and Temple was unable to get off a good shot. Rashaun Freeman (16 points) collected the rebound and was fouled with 2.1 seconds remaining. Despite missing both foul shots, Temple didn't have enough time to collect the rebound and get off a final shot.

"We definitely needed a win," said Anderson. "We haven't won any close games this year, and despite giving up the lead, it still felt good to win this one."

Anderson kick-started the 3-point explosion with a pair of NBA-range trifectas in the first half. Brennan Martin hit consecutive 3-pointers as part of a 16-5 spurt. The run ballooned to 21-9 and Anderson punctuated it with a 3-pointer from the wing that put UMass on top, 31-14.

Hawkins finished with a game-high 22 points for Temple and the Owls dominated on the glass, outrebounding UMass, 45-29. Temple made nine 3-pointers, but hoisted 34 attempts -- the most ever against UMass.

"You can't measure intensity on the stat sheet," said Lappas. "I just felt like we were going to win this game. We got outrebounded and we only got one offensive rebound, but the kids found a way to win."

Chaney denied 700th win in agonizing loss
By Mike Jensen, The Philadelphia Inquirer, 1/25/2004

AMHERST, Mass. - It was about to be the greatest comeback of John Chaney's 22 seasons at Temple, providing the Owls coach his milestone 700th career victory in a most memorable way.

Photo
John Chaney's first attempt at reaching career win 700 slipped away with Art Bowers' 3-pointer.
Instead, the commemorative basketball brought for the occasion stayed in its Wawa bag, and Chaney sat in a chair staring at a cinder-block wall in a stone-silent Temple locker room.

Down by 23 points to Massachusetts with a little more than 14 minutes remaining at the Mullins Center yesterday, the Owls fought back furiously with three of their starters on the bench, scoring 34 of the next 42 points to take a three-point lead with a minute left. Then it all fell apart and UMass, which had lost seven straight, escaped with a 66-65 stunner.

Temple even had the ball with that three-point lead. Owls point guard Mardy Collins, who had been a big part of the comeback, ended up kicking himself for his decisions during the last minute, starting when he took an ill-advised jumper and then fouled the UMass rebounder.

"A bad foul," Collins lamented.

After UMass made a free throw and Temple missed one, Minuteman guard Art Bowers hit a three-pointer from the wing to put UMass up by a point with 32 seconds left. Owls star David Hawkins was kept away from the ball - UMass actually had a steal but stepped out of bounds - and Collins ended up driving to the middle, right into traffic, with about 10 seconds left. He never got a shot off.

"The only thing he had to do was get in the gut and fake the shot and let them foul him," Chaney said. "He tried to spin and shoot a clear shot with them all over him."

UMass made the same number of baskets as Temple (6-9 overall, 1-4 Atlantic Ten), but the Minutemen took 30 fewer shots. In the first half, Temple took 15 more shots and trailed by 17. For the game, UMass had just one offensive rebound and one steal, although it did have 21 assists on its 24 field goals.

Probably no one in America needed a victory more than UMass coach Steve Lappas, who threw a box-and-one on Hawkins, reminiscent of the defense that Villanova guard Howard Brown played on Georgetown's Allen Iverson a decade ago at the Spectrum when Lappas coached the Wildcats. Of course, that was the only thing reminiscent of that game. This time, only 3,493 people watched, with 5,000 empty seats.

Leading the parade of Minutemen face-guarding Hawkins was former University City and Lutheran Christian Academy forward Maurice Maxwell. Hawkins didn't score until the last minute of the first half, as UMass (6-11, 1-5) poured in 7 of 11 three-pointers.

"We just weren't getting out to the shooters at all," Collins said of that first half, which had to be Temple's worst of the season, considering UMass had given up more than 82 points a game during its losing streak.

The Owls were forced into a man-to-man before halftime, and took to trapping full court after the break. UMass immediately began to wilt, throwing the ball all over the place and missing a string of jumpers. During the comeback, the Owls kept starters Keith Butler, Antywane Robinson and Dustin Salisbery on the bench. Chaney went with Hawkins and Collins, plus Tyreek Byard and seldom-used freshman Dion Dacons, who had just one point, but had five rebounds and several hustle plays during his 14 minutes. Nehemiah Ingram was out there until he fouled out, then Micheal Blackshear replaced him. They combined for 13 rebounds. Chaney lauded them all, and said of the starters he sat, "They haven't given us anything. Nothing."

Along with Hawkins, who scored 19 second-half points, Byard made some of the biggest shots of Temple's comeback, including a three-pointer that drew Temple to within two points at 60-58, with just a little more than five minutes left, and a jumper in the last two minutes for the 65-62 lead.

It looked as if Temple had taken control after Hawkins did what he does best: He put his shoulder down and pump-faked, then converted a three-point play that completed the comeback and put the Owls ahead by a point with 2 minutes, 21 seconds left.

With Chaney about to become the fifth active coach to hit 700 victories, ESPN2, showing yesterday's game, had wanted to film his pregame speech in the locker room. That request was denied.

"I don't put that on the kids' back," Chaney said. "I didn't want to go through any dramatic speeches. I wanted it to be just as it always is."

The Basketball Hall of Fame in nearby Springfield has requested the basketball used when Chaney hits 700, and also his tie. The game against St. Bonaventure at the Liacouras Center on Wednesday is the next opportunity.

"It's not something I dwell on; everybody is constantly reminding me of it," Chaney said of the milestone. "I might even die before I get 700."

Minutemen outlast Owls
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/26/2004

AMHERST - University of Massachusetts senior point guard Anthony Anderson was a spectator at the school's women's basketball game on Friday night. He watched as the Minutewomen blew a 14-point lead and lost to Xavier.

That game was on his mind late in the second half against Temple Saturday, after the UMass men's team squandered a 23-point lead and was trailing the Owls 65-62 with 1:41 left in the game.

''I was like, it's about to happen to us too,'' Anderson said. ''But we stayed in there and stuck it out.''

After Artie Bowers made one of two free throws with 43.3 seconds left to bring the Minutemen within two at 65-63, Owl Michael Blackshear missed the front end of a one-and-one with 42 seconds left.

After hurrying the ball up the floor, Anderson found Bowers open in the left corner. The ball sailed through with 32.3 seconds left to put UMass ahead 66-65.

Temple never got off an attempt at the game-winning shot. Anderson twice knocked the ball away to preserve the win.

Sophomore forward Jeff Viggiano said the team needed the win.

''Just relief. Joy. It was such a good feeling,'' he said. ''The locker room was crazy.''

The victory, the first for UMass in Atlantic 10 play, ended its seven-game losing streak and nine-game conference losing streak.

''I think the kids fought hard,'' UMass coach Steve Lappas said. ''It got a little crazy at the end. But I thought our kids worked hard and did a great job.''

The Minutemen will try to start a winning streak Wednesday night when they host Fordham at 7 p.m.

The loss denied Temple coach John Chaney his 700th career win. He'll get another shot at home Wednesday against St. Bonaventure. Chaney admitted he's tired of the topic.

''Everybody is constantly reminding me of it. I might even die before I get 700,'' he said. ''If it comes, so be it. We'll get up the next day and go to practice.''

The idea that this game would be decided in the final minutes seemed unfathomable five minutes into the second half when a driving layup by Jeff Viggiano, (nine points, nine rebounds) gave the Minutemen a 54-31 lead.

But David Hawkins, who had been shut down by the Minutemen's box-and-one in the first half, finally got free as Temple began to run him around staggered screens. Nineteen of his game-high 22 points came in the second half.

He and Mardy Collins (16 points, six rebounds) led a 13-0 run that made it 54-44 with over 10 minutes to play.

The UMass lead hovered around 10 until a series of sloppy turnovers by the Minutemen led to a 10-0 Owl spurt that tied the game with 4:08 remaining.

Chris Chadwick's floater late in the shot clock regained the lead for UMass temporarily, but a three-point play for Hawkins gave Temple its first lead of the game.

Tyreek Byard followed with jumper that put Temple up 65-62 with 1:41 left, setting up the final sequence.

''To come from 23 points behind is very difficult,'' Chaney said. ''It's beyond me how we even came back.''

Lappas said he wasn't happy to see his team lose the lead, but there was added value to winning the way it did.

''I think the way we won was probably better than if we had won by 15 or 18 because we went down, but we didn't lose our poise,'' Lappas said. ''Those are the types of lessons we need to learn as young guys. They gained more from this than they would have from a 15-point win.''

New hero emerges in old rivalry
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/26/2004

Because Saturday's game didn't have the same ramifications that the matchups between the University of Massachusetts and Temple did in the early- and mid-1990s Artie Bowers won't be remembered the same way Michael Williams and Tony Barbee are. But like those two Minuteman standouts, Bowers did earn himself as spot in the rivalry's history Saturday.

Photo
Art Bowers had, without question, his best game so far as a Minuteman.
In his introduction to this rivalry, the UMass freshman knocked down a 3-pointer from the corner with 32.3 seconds left in the game that gave the Minutemen a 66-65 win over Temple at the Mullins Center.

Bowers said he liked his new place in history. ''When I move on from here down the road, people will remember that that in my freshman year that I hit the big shot to beat Temple.''

It's been an up-and-down season for Bowers, who finished with a career-high 19 points to lead UMass.

He had appeared on the verge on breaking out early this season, until a sprained ankle against Boston College Dec. 6 gave his season an unwanted intermission.

Act II started slowly for him as he struggled to find his shot. His always reliable jumper was producing quite a few airballs.

But over the past week he's started to gain some momentum. He scored 10 against Duquesne and nine against Saint Joseph's. Not eye-popping numbers, but he was looking comfortable again.

In UMass coach Steve Lappas' system, perimeter offense is critical against Temple. Who could provide that scoring was unclear heading into the game, but Bowers was confident throughout.

''It was great to see Artie have this kind of game,'' Lappas said. ''You never know what it is that's going to ignite a kid, but hopefully this is something that is going to really get him going.''

WHIPPLE THANKS FANS - Former UMass football coach Mark Whipple, who was hired last week as the quarterbacks coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, spoke to the Mullins Center crowd at halftime.

''We leave with mixed emotions. We've enjoyed the best six years of our lives here,'' said Whipple, who thanked the fans and left saying ''Go UMass.''

FREEMAN HONORED AGAIN - UMass sophomore rookie Rashaun Freeman won his fifth Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honor after averaging 16.3 points and 9.3 rebounds in three games last week.

Freeman may have just edged out Bowers who averaged 12.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per game and hit the winning shot against the Owls.

SILVER ANNIVERSARY TEAM - ESPN named two former Minutemen to its Atlantic 10 Silver Anniversary team. Lou Roe and Marcus Camby joined David West of Xavier, Jameer Nelson of Saint Joseph's and Mark Macon of Temple, who was at the Mullins Center Saturday as one of John Chaney's assistant coaches.

The team was announced at halftime of the broadcast of Saturday's game.

MISCELLANEOUS - Anthony Anderson 3-pointer 3:10 into the game gave the Minutemen their first lead since early in the second half against St. Bonaventure Jan. 14.

The newest inductees to the UMass Athletic Hall of Fame - Granville Pruyne (men's soccer), Tammy Marshall, (women's gymnastics), Edward Larkin Jr. (men's basketball), William MacConnell (skiing) Ed McAleney (track and field, football) and Laura O'Neil (field hockey, lacrosse) - were honored prior to the game.

Temple's David Hawkins had his wife and child in the crowd, who regularly help up signs that read: ''I'm Married to the Incredible Hawk No. 34,'' and ''The Hawk is My Daddy, No. 34.''
