MHERST - The already thin University of Massachusetts men's basketball roster will be even thinner when the Minutemen take the floor at 7:30 tonight against Central Connecticut State at Mohegan Sun.
Freshman guard Artie Bowers, who sprained his ankle Saturday against Boston College, will not play against the Blue Devils.
''It's a bad sprain. A bad sprain can take anywhere from two weeks to a month,'' UMass coach Steve Lappas said. ''We won't know for awhile. But if we were playing Saturday, he wouldn't be playing either.''
Bowers is the third Minuteman sidelined by injury this year. Senior guard Marcus Cox elected not to continue his career because of a severely arthritic knee, while sophomore Alassane Kouyate is redshirting because of knee tendinitis that will require surgery.
Lappas said the timing of the injury is somewhat advantageous because after tonight, the Minutemen don't play again until Dec. 20 as students begin final exams.
''It's definitely better now than in January,'' he said.
Bowers had been averaging 10.2 points per game prior to being injured.
Fellow freshman Maurice Maxwell will make his first career start.
Lappas said juniors Brennan Martin and Chris Chadwick can expect to have expanded roles.
''It's a significant change because you had six perimeter players and now you have five scholarship perimeter players,'' he said. ''You only have three big guys, so all eight guys are going to be in the fray. Chris Chadwick and Brennan Martin have to play significant minutes.''
In the event of an injury or foul trouble, forward Jeff Viggiano would be the emergency guard.
Lappas said the combination of the team's depth and Saturday's success means that the Minutemen will likely play more zone defense again tonight.
''We had decided early in October that we needed to play more zone because of our depth,'' Lappas said. ''Our depth is going to be tested even more. So I think we're going to have to play some zone. We have some confidence having used it effectively the other day.''
Tonight's game is the third trip in as many years for the Minutemen and Blue Devils to Mohegan Sun Arena, with each team winning once.
Last year's game was ugly. UMass opened a 34-19 lead late in the second half and appeared to be on its way to blowing out Central, but then the basket closed up. The Minutemen went 6:56 without a field goal and fell 46-45.
Central lost both starting guards from that team, which finished 15-13.
The 2003-04 edition of CCSU, which was picked to finish No. 2 in the Northeast Conference, has opened this season 1-1. The Blue Devils beat Charleston Southern 66-55 and then fell to Loyola Marymount 58-57 at the Mohegan Sun classic in Bristol.
Their Northeast Conference opener against Quinnipiac, which was scheduled for Saturday, was postponed because of the snowstorm.
Senior 6-foot-7 forward Ron Robinson has led the team in scoring (16 points per game) and rebounding (9 per game).
He's joined up front by 6-foot-6 forward Rich Pittman (13.5 ppg, 8.5 rpg), who was held scoreless in 25 minutes vs. UMass last year.
Despite the play of Robinson and Pittman, Central has been outrebounded 37 to 33.5 this season.
Last year's UMass killer Ricardo Scott, who had 18 points and eight rebounds, is gone, but the Blue Devils have had a promising start from freshman point guard T. Ron Christy who has averaged 10.5 points and 4 assists. The 5-foot-10 point guard is the latest Division I product out of Kolbe Cathedral High School in Bridgeport, Conn., which also produced Cox.
''We're a team that is still finding ourselves,'' said CCSU coach Howie Dickenman. ''We've had some great moments and some very questionable moments. We're a long way from where we want to be.''
NOTES: UMass has yet to win a game this year away from the Mullins Center. ... The Blue Devils' senior staff supervisor is Phil Martelli Jr., a former Saint Joseph's walk-on and the son of the Hawk head coach.

MHERST - Pat Sellers seemed to miss the point of the adage ''If you can't beat 'em, join em.''
Last year as an assistant coach at Central Connecticut State, his alma mater, Sellers helped the Blue Devils beat the University of Massachusetts.
This year he'll be trying to help turn the tables. Sellers is in his first year on the UMass staff of Steve Lappas after spending four years under Howie Dickenman at CCSU.
Sellers admitted it is a little unusual.
''A lot of my friends call me from Central and ask me who I'm rooting for. 'I'm like I work for UMass. This is my school,' '' Sellers said. ''Obviously I went to school there and I coached there and I spent half my life in Connecticut. It feels funny, but it's going to be a lot of fun.''
Sellers graduated from the New Britain institution in 1991 and was named the East Coast Conference's Defensive Player of the Year as a senior. He finished with 581 career rebounds, which was No. 10 on the school's all-time list at the time.
After coaching high school teams from 1994 to 1999, Sellers moved on to CCSU under Dickenman, who had high praise for his work.
''He's a tremendous person and tremendous recruiter,'' Dickenman said. ''He had a lot to do with the development of Corsley Edwards.''
After a standout career for the Blue Devils, Edwards was a second-round NBA draft pick and is playing professionally in Italy.
Sellers also helped the development of current Central big man Ron Robinson.
''He was actually my first recruit, so I know that kid inside and out. I'm very happy for him because he's probably going to end up with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds,'' Sellers said. ''He came in and was very unskilled, athletic and raw. He really worked hard. But I know some of his tendencies so I can really help our guys.''
Lappas will use Sellers for more than just planning for Robinson.
''Pat knows them well. He recruited all the kids there, including the new kids,'' Lappas said.
''I know all the players. I know their tendencies a little bit more,'' Sellers said. ''I know a lot of the calls and what they run and what they like to do defensively. I kind of know their mindset of what they're going do with different players.''
Dickenmen admitted that Sellers' inside knowledge gives UMass an edge.
''He knows what we're going to do on offense and on defense so it's going to be like they have a sixth man out there,'' Dickenman said.
After tonight, Sellers will become a Central (1-1) fan again.
''I hope they go 27-3, at least 27-3. That would be a loss to us and at least one win in the NCAA Tournament,'' he said. ''They'd be the first team in school history to advance in the NCAA Tournament.''
Matt Vautour can be reached at [email protected].
he Massachusetts men's basketball team will have to rely on its youth and depth in tonight's game against Central Connecticut State (1-1) at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Due to injury, the Minutemen's backcourt depth has been cut from four players to three.
UMass (2-3) will play without freshman guard Art Bowers, who went down with an ankle injury in Saturday's game at BC just 12 minutes in. UMass coach Steve Lappas will have to rely on freshman Maurice Maxwell to fill Bowers' starting spot.
"He's hurt, bad," Lappas said. "It's a bad sprain. A bad sprain could take anywhere from two weeks to a month, six weeks. Honestly we won't know for a while. It's very swollen, he can't move. Missing Artie Bowers has more of an effect from a basketball standpoint then it does from a mental standpoint."
Although Lappas knows that the way his team plays tonight will be altered because of Bowers' absence, he's hoping the rest of his backcourt will be able to step up and fill the holes.
"[Chris] Chadwick and Brennan [Martin] are the two guys on the bench from the perimeter so they both have to play significant minutes," Lappas said.
In the chance that Lappas needs another player to fill the guard spot, he'll look to sophomore Jeff Viggiano to step up and play the shooting guard.
In addition, the Maroon and White will look to use the knowledge of assistant coach Pat Sellers to their advantage. Sellers is a CCSU graduate, and has spent the last four seasons on the Central Connecticut sidelines, where among other things, he was in charge of recruitment.
"Obviously Pat knows them well, he recruited all the kids there, including the new kids," Lappas said. "They've only played two games, they've got three, four new kids that haven't played that much or they've only played two games so you don't really know what they are. Pat at least gives you an idea of what they were recruited as and what they're supposed to be."
Sellers' knowledge becomes especially important when it comes to guarding senior forward Ron Robinson. Sellers can give the UMass big men some insight into the best ways to shut down Robinson.
"That's going to be important," Lappas said. "He's a really good player, he's averaging 16 points a game right now so we have to do a good job on [him]. Robinson is their focus offensively, they've only played two games so it's hard to really tell what they are right now being one and one, but they're going to be a formidable test for us."
Because UMass' zone defense was highly effective against BC, they will use it again tonight to both keep players out of foul trouble and spread the floor.
"We had decided early in October when we were having our meetings that we needed to play more zone this year because of our depth," Lappas said. "Our depth is going to be tested even more [tonight], so I would think that we're going to have to definitely play some zone. Our zone is pretty good. We spent a lot of time on it lately, so it will be ready for us tomorrow."
For the Minutemen, other than filling holes in the backcourt, they will need to work hard under the basket, as the Blue Devils have two accomplished rebounders in Robinson and junior Rich Pittman. The duo combined for 36 total rebounds in the Blue Devils' first two games.
"Crash-the-glass rebounding is going to be a huge factor as it always is for us and that's where we have to really do a good job," Lappas said.
Junior captain Anthony Anderson will be vital to the Minuteman offense as he leads the team in scoring with 17.4 points per game.
Anderson was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week after averaging 24.5 points per game against Vermont and Boston College, as well as scoring a career-high 29 points against Vermont. Anderson leads the A-10 in 3 pointers made (19) and is second in 3 point percentage (.514).
NCASVILLE, Conn. - Saturday it was missed free throws. Tuesday night it was missed layups. What's next - missed dunks?
The optimism generated by Saturday's well-played loss to Boston College disappeared Tuesday as the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team missed nine shots from less than three feet and suffered its second one-point what if?-filled loss in four days. This time it was Central Connecticut State which won 53-52 at Mohegan Sun Arena.
With 27.5 seconds left in the game, the Minutemen were clinging to a 52-51 lead as Anthony Anderson crossed midcourt. The Blue Devils' half-court trap came out to meet him and knocked the ball away. Anderson dove on it and tried to call time-out, but the officials whistled a jump ball. Central Connecticut took over on the alternating possession and worked the ball around the perimeter before dumping it to the right block to Ron Robinson.
The senior big man went hard to the basket and was fouled by Minuteman center Gabe Lee. Robinson made both free throws to put the Blue Devils ahead with 5.6 seconds left.
With a foul to give, Central Connecticut alertly fouled Anderson with 3.4 seconds left, forcing UMass to inbound from the right sideline. Jeff Viggiano was looking for Maurice Maxwell on the baseline, but he wasn't open, forcing Viggiano to give it to Anderson.
The senior point guard was stripped again as time ran out and the Blue Devils escaped.
UMass coach Steve Lappas took the blame off Anderson.
''That can happen; he's human,'' Lappas said.
UMass (2-4) is off until Dec. 20 when the Minutemen host Marshall at 4 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
''Last game we played well and played hard,'' Viggiano said. ''We played hard, but I don't know what the difference is.''
Sophomore rookie big man Rashaun Freeman led UMass with 15 points and 13 rebounds, but he struggled in the second half, making just 2-of-8 shots. Lee, who was battling an injured ankle, scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Central Connecticut did a good job keeping Anderson from scoring, as he had just nine points.
For the second straight year, the Minutemen took what seemed like a comfortable lead against Central Connecticut (2-1) into the second half only to watch it disappear down the stretch.
Leading 41-32 in the midst of an 8-2 run, UMass had a chance to take a double-digit lead and perhaps break Central Connecticut's back with just under 15 minutes left in the game.
Viggiano missed a 3-pointer but went to the basket and grabbed his own rebound. He twice tried to lay it back in, amid traffic under the basket, but he front-rimmed the first and back-rimmed the second. Freeman grabbed the rebound, but the rim blocked him too. UMass kept the ball when it went out of bounds off Central.
''We missed these chippies around the basket. They looked like they were in, some of them, and they came out. That was the game. We can't be in that position. If we make a couple of layups, we win the game pretty handily.''
The Minutemen went back inside to Freeman, who was too strong on a short jumper. Viggiano tried to tip in the miss but repeated his previous results.
''There's no excuse for missing gimmes like that,'' Viggiano said.
''We went to the offensive glass hard,'' Lappas said. ''We missed these chippies around the basket. They looked like they were in, some of them, and they came out. That was the game. We can't be in that position. If we make a couple of layups, we win the game pretty handily.''
The struggles by UMass seemed to buoy the Blue Devils, who grabbed the momentum with an 8-3 run. Robinson, who only scored four points in the first half, dominated with 17 of Central's 26 in the second including his team's final 10 to seal the win.
''We tried to get him the ball more on the block,'' Central Connecticut coach Howie Dickenman said. ''When the game was on the line, he was the best player on the floor. He was the man out there.''
Matt Vautour can be reached at [email protected].
NCASVILLE, Conn. - When Jeff Viggiano opened the game with a 3-pointer on the wing, it appeared he might have shaken his season-long slump. Instead, the University of Massachusetts sophomore small forward's struggles continued to mount on Tuesday.
Viggiano made just 3-of-13 shots and repeatedly missed inside. The player who arrived at UMass with a reputation as a 3-point specialist has yet to find the range in college. He was 1-for-5 Tuesday night and has made just 3-of-17 this year.
UMass coach Steve Lappas said the team needs Viggiano to find his game.
''He's one of the guys we're relying on,'' Lappas said. ''You've got to be concerned.''
Viggiano said the Minutemen need to use the 10 days off before their next game to fix what ails them.
''We have to bounce back from this,'' he said. ''We have to dig ourselves out of this hole.''

Jeff Viggiano made these two big dunks in the second half, a 3-pointer to start the game, but missed his other 10 shots, including many from close range. |
RELIANCE ON ANDERSON - The Minutemen have not been able to win when senior point guard Anthony Anderson has struggled to score. He's averaging 25 points in UMass wins and just 11.5 points in losses. Anderson has played every minute of each of the last three games.
NEXT UP - Former UMass Athletic Director Bob Marcum will be in town on Dec. 20, when his new employer/alma mater, Marshall, takes on the Minutemen. The Thundering Herd is 2-3 after Saturday's 90-61 loss at Oregon.
HURLEY JINX? - It was a bad day for players coached by a member of the Hurley family. UMass' Artie Bowers, who played for Danny Hurley at St. Benedict's (New Jersey) was out with a sprained ankle. Central Connecticut's Obie Nwadike, who played for Bob Hurley, Danny's father, at St. Anthony's (Jersey City), was out due to illness.
MISCELLANEOUS - The loss marked UMass' first back-to-back one-point losses since the 1951-52 season when the then-Redmen struggled against a stretch of future NESCAC schools. They fell to Williams and Amherst en route to going 4-17. ... After missing two big free throws against Boston College, Gabe Lee swished his first two and made 4-of-6 for the game. ... Brennan Martin's four fouls was the most of his career. ... Attendance was 3,554 at Mohegan Sun Arena.

NCASVILLE, Conn. - Several of the UMass Minutemen's losses last season fell into the downright embarrassing category, and their 46-45 defeat by Central Connecticut State in early December, in which UMass let a 15-point second-half lead get away, sat right near the top of that list.
Although the lead wasn't quite as big last night at Mohegan Sun Arena, the Blue Devils' comeback was just as devastating and the result just as maddening for the Minutemen, who dropped a 53-52 decision.
Ron Robinson, who scored a game-high 21 points, was fouled by UMass' Gabe Lee with 5.6 seconds to play and made two foul shots to put Central Connecticut State ahead by one. The Blue Devils then gave their sixth foul of the half as UMass tried to bring the ball up the floor, creating a crucial inbounds pass for the Minutemen with 3.4 seconds left.
Jeff Viggiano threw it in near midcourt to Anthony Anderson, but Central Connecticut State's Lenny Jefferson bumped the ball away and Justin Chiera came away with possession and dribbled out the clock.
The Minutemen (2-4) took the floor last night with only eight healthy scholarship players.
UMass scored the first five points before Central Connecticut States DeMario Anderson and Jefferson hit back with consecutive 3-pointers.
Treys by Anderson and Chiera put the Blue Devils ahead 16-14 before UMass ran off eight in a row, with Rashaun Freeman scoring inside twice and Anthony Anderson popping a three from the left corner. Central promptly answered with seven straight points.
With the game tied 26-26, UMass' Brennan Martin stuck a 3-pointer with 1:02 left, and after Jefferson made 1-of-2 at the line, Martin hit from the left wing, just inside the arc, with two seconds left to give the Minutemen a 31-27 hold at the half.
Freeman scored 11 to lead all first-half scorers, while DeMario Anderson had nine for Central Connecticut State.
Behind a pair of layups by Lee and two fast-break dunks from Viggiano, UMass extended to a 41-32 lead, its largest, 4 minutes into the second half.
Central, though, rallied behind top scorer Robinson, who scored eight straight points for the Blue Devils to boost them into a 51-49 lead with 4:19 to play.
Both teams came up empty on two ensuing possessions before UMass Lee took the ball at the top of the key, oblivious to the shot clock running out, and slipped the ball to Anderson, who dropped a 21-footer from the right elbow as the clock expired.
UMass had a 52-51 lead at the 2:13 mark, but failed to score again.
UMass notes
Freshman guard Art Bowers, who sprained his right ankle in Saturday's dramatic one-point overtime loss at Boston College, was on crutches last night and missed the game.
Bowers has averaged 8.8 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists. . . .
The Minutemen won't play again until Dec. 20 at home against Marshall. . . .
UMass assistant coach Pat Sellers came to Amherst this season from Central Connecticut, where he played from 1987 to 1991 and spent the last four seasons as an assistant to head coach Howie Dickenman. . . .
Lee entered last night first in the Atlantic 10 Conference in blocks per game (4.2), while Anderson was best in made 3-pointers per game (3.8).
NCASVILLE, Conn. - Again?
Reeling from a heartbreaking 76-75 overtime loss at Boston College on Saturday afternoon, the Massachusetts men's basketball team traveled to the Mohegan Sun Arena seeking revenge from Central Connecticut State for a 46-45 loss that marked one of the low points of the Minutemen's 2002-03 season.
However, none would be served, as the Blue Devils again slipped past UMass by just a single point, winning 53-52 before a crowd of 3,554.
"It's another tough game to lose," UMass coach Steve Lappas said. "I just told the kids that we have 10 days to get ourselves healthy and regroup. Six games into the season we have our backs against the wall, obviously.
"We just need to respond now."
The Minutemen were without the services of starting guard Art Bowers, who severely sprained his ankle against BC and is out indefinitely.
UMass, which will take a week off for exams, will return to action on Dec. 20 when Marshall visits the Mullins Center.
"We need to get back on the right track," junior center Gabe Lee said. "We can't play like we did tonight and expect to do well the rest of the season."
Ron Robinson led all scorers with 21 points for the Blue Devils. Guards Demario Anderson and Justin Chiela both added nine for CCSU.
Sophomore forward Rashaun Freeman led the Minutemen with 15 points and 13 rebounds, while junior center Gabe Lee posted 12 points and eight rebounds.
It was, however, the numerous lay-ups and close-range shots the Minutemen were repeatedly unable to convert combined with 15 second half turnovers that ultimately sealed their fate.
"We had a lot of [easy baskets] that looked like they were in and just came out," Lappas said. "If we make a couple lay-ups then we win the game pretty handily, we just didn't finish around the basket.
"But the bottom line is that we shouldn't have put ourselves in that position, and it cost us."
"I don't really know what it was tonight," sophomore forward Jeff Viggiano said. "We may have just gotten too confident and comfortable and started turning the ball over."
Trailing 52-51 with just over 27 seconds remaining, CCSU opted to play for the last shot and found Robinson on the low block, where he was fouled on a quick spin move to the basket. He then hit both free throws, giving the Blue Devils a one-point edge with just under six seconds remaining.
Armed with a foul to give, Central Connecticut was whistled for contact against junior Anthony Anderson before the captain could advance the ball beyond half court, forcing the Maroon and White to inbound the ball deep in their own backcourt with under four seconds to play.
After Lappas called for a time out, Viggiano set up to inbound the ball along the sideline. Unable to spot a wide-open Freeman standing alone under the hoop, Viggiano forced the ball in to Anderson and had it slapped away as the buzzer sounded, giving CCSU its second one-point win over UMass in as many years.
"[On the last play] we ran Maurice Maxwell along the baseline and [Viggiano] looked at him, but Rashaun Freeman was wide open and Viggiano just didn't see him," Lappas said.
After jumping out to an early 5-0 lead, UMass' lead grew to as high as six in the first half when a Freeman jumper made the score 22-16 at the 7:40 mark.
Leading by four to start the second half, the Minuteman pushed the advantage to nine with an 8-2 run highlighted by a pair of Viggiano dunks, the second of which made the score 41-32 with 15:28 remaining in the game.
Central Connecticut continued to chip away, however and eventually tied the game on the strength of a 7-1 burst that culminated with a Robinson lay-up that knotted things at 47 with 7:24 left.
The Blue Devils then took their first lead since the 5:49 mark of the first half as a Robinson jumper made the score 51-49 with 4:20 on the clock.
The Minutemen regained the lead at 52-51 just over two minutes later when Anderson drained a long three as the shot clock expired, but did not score again.
