t's hard to imagine the rivalry between the University of Massachusetts and Temple could ever return to the level it reached in the mid-1990s.
But a year ago, the two games between the Minutemen and Owls were as good as any in the history of the rivalry.
Artie Bowers made a game-winning 3-pointer and Anthony Anderson made two key steals late as UMass won the first game 66-65 at home. Temple got even in Philadelphia when David Hawkins scored 17 of his 41 points in the second overtime to give the Owls a 98-92 win.
The two teams are both improved from this point a year ago and will try to start the Atlantic 10 conference slate with a win at 8 tonight at the Mullins Center.
Temple went 4-5 in its annual brutal nonconference schedule, but has quite a few reasons for optimism heading into games against the mostly rebuilding Atlantic 10.
Hall of Fame coach John Chaney said he isn't sure what's fair to expect from his team. ''We've yet to be defined as a team. It's too early to tell,'' he said.
UMass hopes to use its 6-4 start as a springboard toward the postseason.
''Right now we're 0-0 (in conference). We're looking forward to getting off to a good start and making a run to the NCAAs,'' said Bowers, who has averaged 18.5 points in two meetings with the Owls. ''We know we could have won some of the other games, but we have to take it from here and continue to get wins.''
Over the course of his career, UMass coach Steve Lappas has said making at least seven threes is critical to beating Temple and this year he said eight or nine might be needed. But he said rebounding is just as critical against Temple.
''You have to rebound the ball very strong,'' Lappas said. ''That's equally as important as 3-point shooting.''
The Owls were actually the Atlantic 10's worst rebounding team during the nonconference schedule, grabbing an average of 8 fewer boards than their opponents.
Because the Owls force their opponents into difficult shots, outrebounding them is critical.
''We've never been a great rebounding team,'' Chaney said. ''When a team shoots 25 and 30 threes we don't tend to rebound too well. I'd much rather stop the inside play and force teams to shoot outside.''
With Hawkins gone, junior Mardy Collins and freshman Mark Tyndale have emerged as key players for the Owls.
Collins leads the team in scoring (17.2 points per game), assists (4.2 per game) and the nation in steals (3.9 per game).
''He's having a player-of-the-year type season,'' Lappas said. ''He runs everything. He scores. He has a lot to do with making them go.''
Chaney has given Tyndale, who is averaging 13.2 points per game, more freedom than most of his freshman.
''We certainly wanted to give him a free hand to play this game. He has tremendous talent,'' Chaney said.
''Tyndale is a very good player,'' Lappas said. ''He's going to be the next in the line (of Temple stars) with Hawkins, Aaron McKie, Mardy Collins. He's a good shooter. He goes to the basket very well.''
Temple has considerable beef inside as 6-foot-11, 285-pound rookie Wayne Marshall joins 7-foot-1, 250-pound senior Keith Butler inside. Butler is questionable tonight, however, after injuring his shoulder in Temple's win against Princeton 16 days ago.
''He's traveling with us, but he hasn't been able to get that left arm up,'' Chaney said. ''He hasn't been able to practice since that last game. We don't anticipate him being able to play.''
The Minutemen will still be without Jeff Viggiano, who suffered a badly sprained ankle in the 73-63 win over Rider Dec. 23.
''This has always been a game where Jeff Viggiano was a very important guy,'' Lappas said. ''He's such a great passer from in the lane and stuff like that. We need somebody to step up.''
Viggiano just began walking on his ankle again. ''We have to see how it responds in the next day or so,'' Lappas said. ''He's still a ways away.''
NOTES: The game is the 500th for Lappas in his career as a head coach. Coincidentally, Temple's last game was the 1,000th of Chaney's career.

t's only the Atlantic Ten opener tonight for both Temple and Massachusetts, but the stakes are high already.
One group of players probably will walk out of the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass., feeling as if it is the best team in the A-10 East.
Since there doesn't appear to be room in the downtrodden division for more than one team to have realistic aspirations of making the NCAA tournament, a good conference start has added significance.
For Temple, a victory would be even more significant because of its location. UMass already has a home upset of Connecticut.
The Owls are 4-5, but have the nation's toughest nonconference strength of schedule in the Ratings Percentage Index by a wide margin. (UMass, 6-4, the only A-10 East school with a winning record, is ranked ninth in national strength of schedule.)
The Owls' schedule has served its purpose, coach John Chaney said.
"Now we've got to win some ball games," he said.
Owls center Keith Butler is questionable with what Chaney described as a severe shoulder bruise, apparently suffered against Princeton in Temple's last game, on Dec. 20.
"He hasn't practiced with us," Chaney said. "He's traveling with us, but he hasn't been able to get that left arm up."
Expect the Owls to be smaller and quicker than usual at the start, with sophomore guard Dustin Salisbery in the lineup.
UMass coach Steve Lappas - who starts four sophomores, led by forward Rashaun Freeman - said the large size of the Owls' guards would present problems for his team, as it does for most teams.
"You can take their record and throw it out the window," Lappas said.
His own team is in a tough stretch of games.
On Sunday, the Minutemen were beaten by Boston College, 67-48. After playing Temple, they have a home game against Xavier and games at St. Joseph's and George Washington, the overall conference favorite.
They could easily start out 3-1 or 1-3 in the conference.
"I think our emphasis is obviously on playing well in the home games," Lappas said. "We need to be ready to do some things in these games."
This game doesn't demand a national spotlight the way it used to when Chaney was fighting John Calipari, so to speak, for conference supremacy.
But the rivalry is still there. And Temple-UMass games still are unpredictable.
Last year's two games were especially wacky.
At UMass, Temple trailed by 23 points with just over 14 minutes left, went on a 34-8 run, had a three-point lead with a minute left and even had the ball, but blew the game, delaying Chaney's 700th career victory.
Later in the season, at Temple, UMass scored 15 of the final 19 points in regulation time to force overtime, before David Hawkins scored 17 points in the second overtime, putting him over 2,000 career points and allowing Temple to escape with a victory.
It will be interesting to see how Owls point guard Mardy Collins, a dominant player early this season, plays tonight if the game is tight to the end. He would be looking to erase bad memories.
In the last minute at UMass last season, he made several bad decisions that doomed the Owls. And at the Liacouras Center, Collins missed two free throws at the end of the first overtime that would have sealed the win.
But Lappas has watched a lot of Temple film, and hasn't seen any stumbles from Collins this season.
"I've seen that Collins has taken a big step," Lappas said. "Not that he wasn't a great player before. But he is big and strong. He is going to present some problems for us."
MHERST, Mass. - Temple's Dustin Salisbery scored 12 consecutive points, including a pair of three-pointers, as the Owls used a 29-to-7 to close out a 61-49 win over the UMass men's basketball team on Wednesday night in the Mullins Center. The game was the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams.
The Owls (5-5, 1-0 A-10) overcame a dismal 17.5 percent shooting percentage in the first half hitting just 7-of-40 field goals. Salisbury scored 12 of his 14 game points in the second half to lead Temple out of a 10-point deficit.
UMass (6-5, 0-1 A-10) held its largest lead of the game (42-32) at the 11:29 mark of the second half after a jumper by senior Chris Chadwick (Union, N.J.)
Temple started the first 11:30 of the game going just 1-for-23 from the field, including a streak of 13 consecutive missed shots, until Antywane Robinson hit a jumper from the right key.
Mardy Collins led all players with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Salisbery finished with 14 points. Robinson and Mark Tyndale added 13 and 11 points each despite the fact that Tyndale was 1-for-20 from the field.
No player for UMass reached double-digits in the scoring column. Sophomore Rashuan Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.), sophomore Art Bowers (Wilmington, Del.) and sophomore Maurice Maxwell (Philadelphia, Pa.) each scored eight points on the night.
Although freshman Jeff Salovski (Bristol, Conn.) recorded a career-high nine rebounds in 18 minutes, the Minutemen were outrebounded by Temple 48-to-36.
The Owls turned the ball over just six times in the game, nearly three below their season average, and scored 15 points on 12 UMass miscues.
The game was No. 500 for UMass head coach Steve Lappas. He now owns a 270-230 in his 17-year career.
The Minutemen will host Xavier on Saturday, Jan. 8 with a 2:00 p.m. tip-off. The game will be televised locally on NESN. At half-time, the University of Massachusetts will recognize the 2004 Hall of Fame Inductees including former head coach John Calipari.

Jeff "Big Deli" Salovski grabbed a career high 9 rebounds against the Owls.

Rashaun Freeman snags the rebound in traffic.

There were many things for Steve Lappas to be disgusted at after the collapse to Temple.
teve Lappas lost in his 500th career game and now has a career record of 270-230 in his 17th season.
• Temple started the game 1-for-23 from the floor through the first 11:30. The Owls had just 2 points for the first 10:04. Mardy Collins had the first points on a field goal with 15:44 left in the first half ... Temple started 0-for-8, made one basket and then missed 14 in a row, before they made two baskets in a row. For the first half, Temple shot just 7-for-40 for 17.5 percent.
• Temple's 21 points in the first half were the fewest a UMass opponent this season. Rider had 22 at halftime.
• Senior Anthony Anderson added to his career point total as he now has 1,088, which stands 27th all-time. Next on the list is Mike Williams, who had 1,122 from 1992-95. Anderson added to his career totals in three-pointers (248), which is second all-time to Monty Mack, who made 331. Anderson is also third in all-time three-pointers attempted with 643. He is also eighth in career assists with 334.
• Freshman Jeff Salovski played a career-high 18 minutes and hauled down a career-high 9 rebounds.
• UMass has 10 wins against Temple at the Mullins Center - the most against any opponent at the arena. This game was the 15th at Mullins between the UMass and Temple, the most of any series to be played at Mullins.
• UMass is in the midst of its longest homestand (six games) in more than 70 years, as the school hosted seven home games in a row in 1930-31 at Drill Hall.
Other Notes: Temple won the opening tap ... Art Bowers nailed a three-pointer two minutes into the game for the first points of the contest Stephane Lasme had his fifth dunk of the season to make it 5-0 ... Temple missed its first eight shots of the game before Mardy Collins had a tip-in with 15:44 left in the first ... ... Maurice Maxwell and Jeff Salovski were the first UMass players off the bench, coming in with 15:26 left in the first ... Anthony Anderson drew a charge on Salisbery with 4:10 left in the first half ... UMass had a 8-1 run spanning 2:21 late in the first half to take a 23-14 lead - the largest of the first half (+9) ... Maurice Maxwell's dunk with 15 minutes left in the second half gave UMass a 10-point lead, its largest of the game to that point (35-25) ... Temple took its first lead pf the game with 5:30 left in the second half on a Salisbery three-pointer to make it 49-47.
Coach Steve Lappas on the game:
That was an interesting game to say the least. I don't think I've ever seen a team win a game when a guy shoots 1-for-20. This is the most bizarre stat sheet I've ever seen in my life.
I was upset at halftime because I thought we really should've made more hay than we did. To be up four at halftime was really the problem. We missed lay-ups and a lot of inside shots and we had some of the best looks from three that we've had all year. We moved the ball very well and got good shots.
We really should have been up by a much larger margin at halftime. I knew at halftime we were in for a tough game. We totally outplayed them in a lot of areas, except obviously shooting, but we were only up by four. We did a great job on defense and tested the right guys. We held them to 30% shooting, but obviously that wasn't enough.
Lappas talks about the intensity and rhythm:
I thought we were very intense. This game was not a product of lethargic basketball. It was a product of missing shots. They wore us out on the glass during the last seven minutes. Even in the first half, they had sixteen offensive rebounds, but they had 33 misses.
They were 7-for-40 in the first half. I thought we did a much better job rebounding in the first half. We didn't have any rhythm in the first half. If we had any rhythm we would've been up 20 in the first half. It was very similar to last year's game. They missed shots in the first half just like last year, the only difference was that we shot well last year.
Jeff Salovski on Temple defense:
I haven't played against a defense like that before. I have played against the 1-3-1 defense before, but nothing as intense as what they play. In practice we worked on passing the ball and moving it around the perimeter, hitting the high post, and we did a good job of that. It just comes down to hitting shots and rebounding and we didn't do any of that.
Maurice Maxwell on team play:
We never really had a rhythm in the game. In the offense you have to play against them the person with the ball doesn't shoot it. They are very long and fill the gaps quickly which made us force a lot of shots. We tightened up in the second half and that caused us to take bad shots.
MHERST - Last night's game at the Mullins Center was tough enough to watch even while UMass enjoyed a 10-point second-half lead. The frightful finale was downright excruciating for the Minutemen partisans.
Dustin Salisbery scored 14 consecutive points in a five-minute stretch late in the game, Temple closed the game on a 29-7 run, and the Minutemen mustered only two points in the last 7 minutes in a gruesome 61-49 loss to the Owls.
After a first half in which the teams combined to shoot only 23 percent from the floor, UMass (6-5, 0-1 Atlantic 10) held a 25-21 lead, and extended it to 42-32 when Chris Chadwick drove the lane for a finger roll with 11:29 to go.
Temple's Mark Tyndale, who started the game 0-for-16 from the field, began the comeback with a jumper from the left elbow. Mardy Collins then scored seven straight points for the Owls (5-5, 1-0), including a pair of 3-pointers.
Salisbery was scoreless until his putback with 7:46 to go pulled the Owls within one, at 45-44, and Art Bowers connected on what would prove to be UMass' last field goal 14 seconds later.
``(Salisbery) has been someone who's stood tall for us,'' Temple coach John Chaney said. ``This year, he's playing a little more defense, and he's feeding off of that.''
From there, Salisbery hit a fallaway jumper and a deep 3-pointer from in front of his own bench, putting Temple on top for the first time, 49-47. Another 3-pointer and a driving layup followed for the 6-foot-5 sophomore, and the Owls were well on their way.
The Minutemen, meanwhile, could add only a pair of free throws to their total.
``We fought really hard, but the inability to make shots really hurt us,'' UMass coach Steve Lappas said. ``At halftime, I thought we should have made more hay than we did. We held them to 30 percent shooting, but obviously it's not enough.''
Collins topped the Owls with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Antywane Robinson had 13 points for Temple and Tyndale - despite a woeful 1-for-20 shooting line - finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.
``I don't think I've ever seen a team win with a guy going 1-for-20,'' Lappas said.
No UMass player reached double figures. Bowers, Rashaun Freeman and Maurice Maxwell finished with eight points apiece.
``They couldn't make a shot the whole game, and (Salisbery) caught fire,'' Lappas said. ``He turned the game around.''
Both teams hit at a 50 percent clip from the floor in the final 20 minutes. At the end, UMass was at 37 percent to Temple's 30. The Owls held a 48-36 rebounding advantage, with 23 offensive boards.
Temple shot 7-for-40 (17.5 percent) in the first half as only two players - Robinson (four) and Collins (three) - made baskets. The Owls missed 20 of their first 21 shots.
The Minutemen led by as many as nine points (23-14) with 2:41 to play in the half, before two late hoops by Robinson helped the Owls ease back to within 25-21 at halftime.
MHERST -- It's been a season of milestones for the University of Massachusetts. The Minutemen played their 2,000th game earlier this season. They welcomed the 1 millionth fan into the 13-year-old Mullins Center. They are in the midst of their longest homestand in more than 70 years. And last night, they planned to celebrate the 500th game in the coaching career of Steve Lappas.
The celebration was officially canceled by Dustin Salisbery, a sophomore guard from Temple, who took over last night's Atlantic 10 opener and propelled the Owls to a 61-49 come-from-behind victory. Salisbery scored all 14 of his points in a row during a five-minute stretch late in the second half, transforming a 45-42 deficit into a commanding 56-48 lead.
"He turned the game around," said Lappas. "There's no doubt about it."
UMass withered at the finish line, scoring its last field goal with 7:31 remaining, and managing only 2 points the rest of the way. UMass did not have a single double-figure scorer for the first time in more than a decade. Rashaun Freeman, Maurice Maxwell, and Art Bowers led the way with 8 points apiece.
Temple, meanwhile, shook off a woeful start by connecting on 12 of its final 18 shots, with Salisbery and Mardy Collins (game-high 18 points) doing most of the damage. Salisbery's 3-pointer with 5:37 left gave the Owls their first lead.
"He's been the guy who's been taking big shots for us all along," said Temple coach John Chaney.
UMass seemed to be in control with a 40-30 lead early in the second half, as the Owls were unable to find the range. But Temple tightened its zone defense, and the Minutemen were unable to get interior baskets and unable to cash in on some open looks.
"I thought we were very intense," said Lappas. "That game was not a product of lethargic basketball. That was a product of missing shot after shot after shot."
UMass, pushed out to the perimeter by Temple's matchup zone, hit just 4 of 26 from 3-point land, with Anthony Anderson (1 for 10) and Bowers (2 for 10) doing most of the clanging. The Minutemen also hurt themselves at the free throw line, connecting on just 9 of 17. On the glass, Temple held a decisive 48-36 advantage, with Collins hauling in a game-high 11.
Early on, it looked as if Temple's bad shooting would be the story. Chaney, who has stayed remarkably vibrant through the first 1,000 games of his career, looked in game No. 1,001 like a man about to turn 73 later this month. After 10 minutes the Owls (5-5, 1-0) had managed just 2 points. At one point the Owls were just 1 for 23 from the field, until Antywane Robinson hit a 16-footer with 8:31 left.
At the half they had improved only to 7 for 40. Other than Robinson and Collins, the team was 0 for 24, including an excruciating 0 for 12 from Mark Tyndale, the vaunted freshman.
Still, UMass was hardly lighting it up against Temple's matchup zone, connecting on just 30 percent. At the break, the Minutemen held a mere 4-point edge, 25-21.
"We should have been up by a much bigger margin at halftime," said Lappas. "I knew we were in for a tough game because we didn't make enough hay in the first half. I thought we totally outplayed them."
In the second half, Temple continued to struggle early. Tyndale finally hit a hoop with 10:58 left after missing his first 16 shots. He finished 1 for 20, but managed 11 points anyway with 9-for-12 shooting from the line.
Chaney said he's not sure what to make of his squad, which heads south to take on Duke Saturday. "They've got talent, but I just don't know how to get them to understand that they've got to be a little meaner," he said.
UMass, now 6-5 (0-1), will also try to summon some more mental toughness when it hosts Xavier Saturday.
MHERST, Mass. - Even for Temple, this was ugly offensive stuff, and it looked ready to do the Owls in. But by the end, the story of the night was Temple's vintage defense.
Last night, Massachusetts got to 40 points with 12 minutes and 43 seconds remaining, but never made it to 50.
At the very end, the only sound at the Mullins Center was the clapping by the Temple players on the court, and the muttering by UMass fans who couldn't believe their own team had just lost when one of Temple's players had shot 1 for 20.
Never mind how it happened. Temple's 61-49 victory could go down as one of the most significant of the season. The Owls now are 5-5 overall, 1-0 in the Atlantic Ten, and they have a big leg up in the A-10 East.
Faced with a swarming Temple defense, UMass scored just one field goal in the last 9:50, and none at all in the last 71/2 minutes. That combined with an offensive spree by Dustin Salisbery to settle it.
"I don't think I've ever seen a team win a game when a guy goes for 1 for 20," said UMass coach Steve Lappas, referring to the shots made and attempted by Temple guard Mark Tyndale. "It was the most bizarre stat sheet I've ever seen in my life."
Until the end, it looked like Lappas, coaching his 500th career game, was going to game-plan his Minutemen (6-5, 0-1) to victory. Temple knew what the game plan was going to be. The Owls remembered how UMass threw a junk defense at David Hawkins last season. They saw it on film this season when UMass played Miami. Mardy Collins was ready for it. Temple practiced for the entire two weeks they were off against it.
And the Owls couldn't score against it. In the first half, the Owls made 7 of 40 shots. Nine of their 21 points came from offensive rebounds. Did it get better after halftime?
Well, Temple made one basket in its first 10 possessions. The Owls had never shot less than 20 percent in the John Chaney era. With 121/2 minutes left, they had made 9 of 51 shots. The wrinkle this time was that UMass mostly threw a triangle-and-two against Salisbery and Collins, who scored six first-half points.
The Owls got great open looks early, but from the players who UMass wanted to take them. Temple missed its first 12 three-pointers, and made just one of its first 23 field-goal attempts - and that one was by Collins on an offensive rebound.
So were the Owls getting blown out? Hardly. UMass made just one of its first 11 three-pointers. They got out ahead by 12-4, but Temple was within 15-13 with 51/2 minutes left before halftime. At that point, Collins had just picked up his second foul going for an offensive rebound and hit the bench. It was no coincidence that UMass scored eight points on its next three possessions to pull ahead by 23-14.
Temple finally released the pressure valve when Antywane Robinson hit a couple of three-pointers before halftime, and another one after the break.
"He was trying to pick for us," Salisbery said. "We were telling him, he just had to step out and he'd have a wide-open shot. That's what he started to do. Once he started knocking down his shots, they had no choice but to go back to man or play the zone. That's what freed us up."
Salisbery took over the game offensively, scoring on six of seven Temple possessions, getting all 14 points of his in a row, and he missed the front end of a one-and-one on the seventh possession. He actually did that twice during that little spree, but Robinson grabbed the rebound and Salisbery ended up hitting a pull-up three, giving Temple a 52-47 lead with 4:38 left.
Tyndale finished with 11 points on 9 of 12 free-throw shooting and had nine rebounds.
MHERST, Mass. - Coach John Chaney's career at Temple is filled with memorable victories, some that are memorable for all the wrong reasons.
Last night's 61-49 win at Massachusetts was one of those games.
It's a game the Owls won despite shooting 7-for-40 from the field in the first half.
And it always will be remembered as the game when freshman guard Mark Tyndale missed 19 of 20 field goal attempts.
For practical purposes, the win was huge for the Owls, who will visit Duke, Maryland and Xavier on the next three Saturdays. Losing their Atlantic 10 Conference opener to the Minutemen wouldn't have helped their NCAA Tournament profile.
Now, Temple will carry a 5-5 record into Cameron Indoor Stadium.
"Duke is probably going to kill us," said Chaney, who promised to buy dogs for several of his players because they "played scared" against the Minutemen.
"We had guys missing wide-open shots," Chaney continued. "And like they say, 'If you're scared, get a dog.' So I'm going to buy them some Chihuahuas and poodles."
After 30 minutes of bad shooting, the Owls were saved by 10 minutes of great defense and a terrific shooting display by the guard tandem of Mardy Collins and Dustin Salisbery.
Temple trailed from the start and was behind, 42-32, with 11 minutes, 29 seconds to play. But UMass faltered when the Owls went to fullcourt pressure. Collins hit two three-pointers and a pair of free throws as the Owls cut the deficit to 44-42.
Then it was Salisbery's turn.
The 6-5 sophomore hit six straight shots in a 5-minute stretch to carry his team to a 56-48 lead.
After the game, Salisbery said he was inspired by a phone conversation he had with Chaney at 11:15 p.m. on New Year's Eve.
"He called me up and really stressed to me to be more aggressive and that he has confidence in me," Salisbery said. "I appreciated his words. It was a really good conversation. I actually taped the phone call and listened to it before the game tonight."
Salisbery (14 points), Collins (18 points, 11 rebounds) and junior forward Antywane Robinson (13 points) were the only players who had success shooting the ball against the Minutemen, who played a variety of zone defenses and willingly surrendered open shots on the perimeter. The rest of the Owls hit 2 of 34 field goal attempts.
The Minutemen (6-5, 0-1 A-10) didn't shoot quite as poorly. But they did manage just one field goal in the last 9 minutes. Top three-point shooter Anthony Anderson was completely locked down, hitting 1 of 10 long-range attempts.
"We've really made an effort to extend our zone and get out to three-point shooters," Collins said.
The Owls closed the game with a 29-7 run. Before that, it was ugly, especially in the first half. Here's how bad it was: UMass missed 13 of its first 15 shots, and was by far the more accurate team.
The Owls missed their first eight shots before Collins scored on a follow at the 15:40 mark. Temple proceeded to miss its next 14 shots.
To their credit, the Owls grabbed 23 offensive rebounds. But few of them turned into points. Sophomore forward Wayne Marshall was stripped the first time he touched the ball. So junior center Keith Butler came in. The same thing happened to him.
Butler was held out of the starting lineup and played only 11 minutes due to a left shoulder injury.
However, nobody had it worse than Tyndale, who missed all 12 of his field goal attempts in the first half. Tyndale's only basket came on a 15-foot jumper midway through the second half. He did get to the free throw line often, hitting nine of 12 attempts.
fter shooting comically bad in the first half, Temple had the last laugh in an ugly game at the Mullins Center Wednesday. The University of Massachusetts blew a 10-point second-half lead and dropped its Atlantic 10 opener 61-49. UMass scored just two points in the final 7 minutes, 32 seconds as Temple finished the game on a 17-2 run. The Minutemen missed their last six shots and had two turnovers in that stretch.
''It was like a tractor pull because we just kept missing,'' UMass coach Steve Lappas said.
After missing his first 16 shots, Temple freshman Mark Tyndale sank a mid-range jumper that made it 42-34 UMass. Other than ending the rookie's long drought, the play didn't seem significant at the time, but it appeared to ignite Temple.
Mardy Collins scored Temple's next eight points to cut the UMass lead to 44-42. After Lawrence Carrier hit one of two free throws, Collins handed the offensive baton to Dustin Salisbery, who hadn't scored at that point. Salisbery went on a solo 14-1 run that finished off the Minutemen.
''He's a guy that takes big shots for us,'' Temple coach John Chaney said. ''I just wish some of him would rub off on some of the other kids. With Mardy wrapped up in their box-and-one, he became the top dog today. Dustin stepped up and took the initiative.''
Lappas was impressed. ''He caught fire and made some shots,'' Lappas said. ''He made some tough ones with guys hanging all over him. He made those baskets in a row and turned the game around.''
The Owls dominated the glass in the second half, outrebounding UMass 21-10. The Minutemen didn't have a single offensive rebound after intermission.
''They really wore us out on the glass in the last seven minutes,'' Lappas said. ''I'm not happy about the rebounding in particular. That bothers me more than the shooting.''
Collins led Temple with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Tyndale had 11 points and nine boards. Antywane Robinson added 13 points.
UMass didn't have anybody score in double figures for the first time since at least 1985. School archives don't have a complete collection of box scores before that. Rashaun Freeman, Artie Bowers and Maurice Maxwell each finished with eight points.
Temple's trademark matchup zone negated Freeman, who was held under 10 points for just the eighth time in his career.
''When a team plays zone it's harder to get the ball inside,'' Lappas said. ''When you don't make (outside) shots, they can be all over him inside.''
The Minutemen (6-5, 0-1 A-10) have now lost their conference opener in three straight seasons. They will try to improve to 1-1 Saturday when they host Xavier at 2 p.m., completing a six-game home stretch.
Temple missed its first eight shots and made only one of its first 22, but UMass couldn't deliver an early knockout blow. The Minutemen made three of their first 16 shots and couldn't build the lead to more than nine points in the first half.
''I was upset at halftime because I thought we should have made more hay than we did,'' Lappas said. ''Being up only four at halftime (25-21) was a problem. We missed a lot of inside shots in the first half. We moved the ball very well and got good shots. We should have been up a much bigger margin at halftime. I knew at halftime we were going to be in for a tough one.''

Jeff "Big Deli" Salovski tries to find a passing option while being harassed by the Temple defense.
s he walked into the press room and put on his glasses Wednesday night, University of Massachusetts coach Steve Lappas stared in amazement at the box score in front of him. It's the most bizarre stat sheet I've ever seen in my life, Lappas said.
The game did feature some unusual statistics:
DISAPPOINTING CROWD - The 3,139 fans were the fewest ever to see a UMass-Temple game at the Mullins Center.
CHANEY QUIPS - Hall of Fame Temple coach John Chaney did not disappoint people looking for him to deliver his usual dose of amusing quotes, as he promised to provide guard dogs to help his players.
''I'm going to buy dogs for these guys cause they're scared out there. I'm going to get Antywane (Robinson) a Chihuahua and I'm going to get Wayne (Marshall) one of those poodles. If you see my 7-foot guys walking around Philly, expect them to have poodles and Chihuahuas.
''Now we're going to play Duke and they're probably going to kick our ass, especially when they see us with poodles and Chihuahuas.''
Chaney has canine plans for himself too.
''I'm going to have me a bulldog or a pit bull, cause I want to be a tyrant.''
TROPHY TO AMHERST? - The UMass athletic department is exploring the possibility of having the Red Sox bring the World Series trophy to the Mullins Center.
The Red Sox earlier this week announced a partnership with the Massachusetts Lottery for a World Series Trophy Tour. They will bring the trophy to any community that requests a visit.
MISCELLANEOUS - UMass has lost eight straight games when it fails to score 60. The Minutemen are 1-31 in the last four seasons when they don't crack 60 points. ... Senior point guard Anthony Anderson returned to the starting lineup replacing Maurice Maxwell. ... The game was Lappas' 500th as a head coach. He's now 270-230 at UMass, Villanova and Manhattan.
Material from the Associated Press was used in this report. Matt Vautour can be reached at mvautour@gazettenet.com.

Chris Chadwick gets the pass away, out of Dustin Salisbery's reach.
