Colonials challenge for UMass
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/15/2005

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The road - which has been a difficult place already for the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team - figures to get considerably tougher on Saturday. The Minutemen will visit No. 21 ranked George Washington at the Smith Center, a building that has been tough on opponents. The Colonials have yet to lose at home in five tries this year.

UMass will attempt the upset without junior forward Jeff Viggiano, who will miss his sixth straight game with an ankle sprain. He ran along the sideline at practice Friday, but isn't ready for basketball activity yet.

The Colonials were picked to be the Atlantic 10's best team before practice started and since the ball started bouncing, they've only solidified those predictions.

Even at 11-2, Coach Karl Hobbs has tried to downplay his team's talent, but his squad has earned its No. 21 ranking with upset wins over Michigan State and Maryland. George Washington has won its first three Atlantic 10 games, rolling past La Salle, Duquesne and St. Bonaventure.

The Colonials have won by playing fast and using their deep and athletic roster to run past teams and pressuring opponents into turnovers.

''They're probably the most athletic team we've played this year, maybe the fastest team we've played this year,'' UMass coach Steve Lappas said. ''Obviously they're very, very good.''

The tops of the Atlantic 10 leader lists are crowded with Colonials. Senior guard T.J. Thompson leads the team with 16.3 points per game (fourth in the A-10), and junior big man Pops Mensah-Bonsu and sophomore wing J.R. Pinnock aren't far behind at sixth (14.9) and seventh (14.5) place respectively.

Mensah-Bonsu also is fourth in blocks (2.08 per game) and seventh in rebounding (7.3). Teammate Mike Hall (7.8) is third in rebounding.

Point guard Carl Elliott drives the Colonials fast-paced offense and defense. He's second in the conference in both assists (5.1) and steals (3.2).

Not surprisingly, George Washington leads the conference in scoring (83.2 points per game), scoring margin (plus 13.7), shooting percentage (.491), rebounding margin (plus 5.8), assists (17.15 per game) and steals (11 per game).

Controlling tempo will be critical if the Minutemen want to upset George Washington and for emerging rookie Jeff ''Big Deli'' Salovski to be a factor. They will have to beat the Colonials' pressure and try to control the ball in the half-court.

''We have to attack their pressure, there's no doubt,'' Lappas said. ''We can't walk the ball up against their pressure, but when it's time to play half-court, we have to be able to do that too. The key is to try to get them into a little more of a half-court game, which is easier said than done.

''If we're controlling the tempo the way we want, it's not a bad game for Deli,'' Lappas said. ''We'll have to see how the game goes.''

Colonials' Opponents Take Aim
By Ivan Carter, The Washington Post Staff Writer, 1/15/2005

Classes at George Washington aren't scheduled to resume until Tuesday, but many students are expected to return a few days early so they can be at Smith Center today when the 21st-ranked Colonials face Massachusetts.

Excitement is indeed running high in Foggy Bottom these days, but the same top 25 status that has fans buzzing continues to provide a new challenge for the Colonials (11-2, 3-0), who suddenly find themselves as the targeted team of the Atlantic 10.

Knocking off a ranked team would provide the kind of spark U-Mass. (7-6, 1-2) has been looking for since the new year began, and George Washington senior point guard T.J. Thompson knows it.

"People are coming after us, you can feel it," said Thompson, who leads George Washington in scoring with 16.3 points per game. "They see that number in front of our name and want to make a name for themselves. We have to be ready every single night."

That's a message George Washington Coach Karl Hobbs pounded home to his squad during a brisk practice yesterday. With center Rashaun Freeman averaging more than 14 points and seven rebounds per game, U-Mass. is talented, but the Minutemen are also something far more dangerous: desperate.

U-Mass., which upset then-No. 7 Connecticut on Dec. 9 and won three straight in late December, has lost three of its last four games, including a 59-52 setback at Saint Joseph's on Wednesday night. Hobbs fully expects to see a variety of defensive looks out of U-Mass., including some full-court pressure and half-court zone.

The idea is to slow George Washington down, make the game ugly and hope the Colonials struggle to shoot well. West Virginia used that strategy and benefited from hot three-point shooting in handing George Washington its last defeat Dec. 29.

The Colonials overcame a sluggish start to win, 85-59, at St. Bonaventure on Wednesday, but Hobbs wasn't happy with his team's focus or execution early on -- the Colonials trailed 10-6 after six minutes. He warned his team that a similar start today could lead to an upset, and a glance at the history of this series suggests that such an outcome is possible.

The Colonials have beaten U-Mass. five times when the Minutemen were ranked, including twice when U-Mass. held the top spot. The Minutemen, who have already faced four top 20 teams this season, would love to return the favor.

"I'm a bottom-line coach," Hobbs said. "Rankings, top 25, all that, it doesn't mean anything if you don't play well and win the game right in front of you. Our goal is to try and win the Atlantic 10 and get to the NCAA tournament. It just so happens that we're in the top 25, but we're not going to pay attention to that. We're going to pay attention to the process. If we do that, everything else will take care of itself."

Still, there is no mistaking the buzz that George Washington has created. Hobbs has his team playing a wide-open, fun style, and the Colonials are averaging a league-best 83.2 points. Xavier (72.5) is the only other conference team with a scoring average over 70.

Even with the majority of students still away on break, today's game is expected to be a near sellout, and folks associated with the university have been wearing their colors with pride since the Colonials beat Maryland on Dec. 5.

"I know that a lot of the students are excited because it's normally Georgetown or Maryland getting all the attention around here," Thompson said. "Just walking around campus, you can sense that people are really into it. It's up to us to keep that going."

Massachusetts 76, #21 George Washington 74 (OT)
By Joseph White, The Associated Press, 1/15/2005

WASHINGTON (AP) -- With less than a second to play in overtime, Rashaun Freeman caught Anthony Anderson's pass and laid it in the basket in one motion, giving Massachusetts a 76-74 victory over No. 21 George Washington on Saturday.

Freeman finished with season-highs of 27 points and 15 rebounds for the Minutemen (8-6, 2-2 Atlantic 10), who made it 2-0 this season against ranked opponents this season. They defeated Connecticut at home last month.

UMass was given a chance to win after George Washington's J.R. Pinnock, an 87.5 percent free throw shooter entering the game, missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 18 seconds to play. Anderson dribbled down the clock -- waiting almost too long -- before feeding Freeman for the game-winner that came with .4 seconds to play.

UMass' Maurice Maxwell had tied the game at 74 on a 3-pointer with 49 seconds left.

Freeman went 10-for-16 from the field and 7-for-10 from the free throw line, having his way against a Colonials team whose biggest inside threat, Pops Mensah-Bonsu, spent much of the game on the bench in foul trouble.

Pinnock scored 15 points to lead the Colonials (11-3, 3-1), who overcame an 18-point second-half deficit to send the game to overtime. Menash-Bonsu scored all of GW's four points in overtime and finished with 12. Mike Hall added 14 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out in overtime.

Maxwell had 20 points for the Minutemen, who overcame 25 turnovers -- including four in overtime.

Freeman scored six points in a 9-0 run that gave UMass a 53-35 lead with 13:31 to play, but the Colonials awoke with a 17-0 run that included 3-pointers from Maureece Rice, Pinnock and Hall, breaking GW's 1-for-10 slump from 3-point range for the game.

Omar Williams' three-point play tied the game at 57 with 7:49 remaining, and there were three more ties before Chris Chadwick turned a driving layup into a three-point play to give UMass a 70-67 lead with 28 seconds to play. T.J. Thompson responded with a 3-pointer with 17 seconds to go to send the game to overtime with the score tied at 70.

Head Coach Steve Lappas On Defeating #21 George Washington:
It is unbelievable what these kids have done in tough situations this year. They gave great effort today as they have all year. Hopefully we can continue to build on what we're doing.

On The Play of Chris Chadwick:
He really did a great job today. Having him in our line-up gives us a great compliment to Anthony Anderson. He handled the ball a lot today, but was able to keep the turnovers down and that helped us tremendously.

On Gameplan and Rebounding:
Coming into the game, we told the kids that we had to rebound today and they did that. We can come up with a gameplan all we want, but the bottom line is they have to go out and perform. Today they did that. They deserved this game so badly because of how hard they worked today.

Our defense has been good this year. The bottom line today was if we could score. I felt because they were a pressing team, we could get an advantage because the court was extended and would give us room

Sophomore Rashaun Freeman On If This Was His Best Game At UMass:
I think today's game was one of my best because of how I played at Saint Joesph's. I've struggled at times, but I've always told myself that good players bounce back.

Freeman On How The Game-Winning Play Unfolded:
I didn't think I was going to get the ball on the last play. I tried to post up and get myself in position for a tip-in if there was a miss. When the pass came to me, I was just trying to get the ball up on the rim and it went in. I think I actually caught the ball and shot it at the same time when I was up in the air. I was just happy I didn't run off the court this time!

Freeman On What The Win Means For The Team:
It was a big win for us. We played hard today. This was a big bounce back for us after our performance at Saint Joseph's, but we have to continue to stay hungry and stay focused taking it one game at a time. We know when our backs are against the wall, we play better. We knew today that we had to control the boards because of how good a rebounding team George Washington is and we did that.

UMass quick in recovery
UMass recovers for overtime win
By Soraya Nadia McDonald, The Boston Globe Correspondent, 1/16/2005

WASHINGTON -- After his team's 76-74 overtime victory over No. 21 George Washington yesterday, University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Steve Lappas laughed.

"I've got to make [my players] feel like they stink," Lappas said. "For some reason, we play better when they think we stink."

This Atlantic 10 Conference win was anything but putrid.

The Minutemen rallied after blowing an 18-point second-half lead over the Colonials (11-3, 3-1). It was the largest lead the Minutemen (8-6, 2-2) have had this season.

The win was the Minutemen's second this season over a ranked team; they defeated then-No. 7 UConn, 61-59, Dec. 9. And as he did against the Huskies, sophomore center Rashaun Freeman scored the winning basket, silencing a Smith Center crowd of 4,310.

Trailing, 74-71, UMass's Maurice Maxwell (20 points) tied the game with a 3-pointer with 51 seconds left in the extra session. Following a missed free throw by Colonials sophomore guard J.R. Pinnock (an 87.5 percent shooter from the line entering the game), Freeman tipped in a pass from senior guard Anthony Anderson, leaving the Colonials four-10ths of a second to go the length of the court.

"I honestly didn't think I would get the ball," Freeman said, figuring that Anderson would take a shot at winning the game.

"Ray had the best game of his career," said Lappas of Freeman, who finished with game highs of 27 points and 15 rebounds.

Though they led, 39-29, at halftime, the Minutemen's poor ball-handling benefited the Colonials, who scored 29 points off UMass's 25 turnovers.

UMass redeemed itself with rebounding (a 37-34 edge) and perimeter shooting, connecting on 47.1 percent (8 of 17) from 3-point range, compared with the Colonials' 27.8 percent (5 of 18).

"To outrebound them was a huge thing for us." Lappas said. "Defensively, we played super."

Midway through the second half, George Washington staged a 17-0 run while holding UMass scoreless for nearly five minutes. But Freeman hit a short jumper to end the drought and give the Minutemen a 57-54 lead with 8:07 left.

Lappas didn't panic when the Colonials went on their second-half tear to wrest the lead away from UMass, but he was understandably concerned.

"I knew they'd make a run," said Lappas. "You can't expect to beat a team like that by 18 points. They're a great team, and they're going to come back at you."

Colonials Tripped Up By Overtime Tip-In
GW Rallies From 18 Down but Falls Short : Massachusetts 76, GW 74
By Ivan Carter, The Washington Post Staff Writer, 1/16/2005

Prior to yesterday's game against Massachusetts, George Washington Coach Karl Hobbs warned his players that if they allowed the Minutemen guards to penetrate the lane, bad things would surely follow.

So when U-Mass. guard Anthony Anderson sliced into the lane with one second remaining in overtime and the score tied at 74, Hobbs knew the result wouldn't be good for his 21st-ranked Colonials.

He was right. Just when it appeared that Anthony would have to attempt a tough pull-up jumper from about 10 feet, he flipped a pass to forward Rashaun Freeman near the basket. Rather than come down with the ball, Freeman redirected it off the glass and through the net to give U-Mass. a 76-74 overtime victory before 4,310 at Smith Center.

Freeman finished with a game-high 27 points for the Minutemen (8-6, 2-2 Atlantic 10). George Washington (11-3, 3-1) suffered its first home loss of the season.

"I wasn't sure what [Anthony] was going to do, but I knew nothing good was going to happen," Hobbs said. "That was how the flow of the game was going, and the ball was in their best player's hands. When the ball is in your best player's hands, good things happen."

The final sequence wasn't the only time Hobbs's worst fears were realized yesterday. Entering the game, Hobbs knew all about Freeman, calling the sophomore lefty "the best big man in the Atlantic 10 Conference." Hobbs also knew that U-Mass. Coach Steve Lappas would employ all sorts of zone defenses to slow down his team.

What the Colonials really needed, Hobbs figured, was to get off to a good start, knock down open jump shots and force the Minutemen to play at their tempo rather than the other way around.

None of that happened.

The Colonials managed only three points over the game's first eight minutes, trailed 39-29 at the half and trailed by 18 points with 13 minutes 31 seconds remaining before ripping off a frantic 22-2 run that got them back into the game.

The Colonials shot 41 percent in the first half and made only 5 of 18 three-point attempts for the game, while U-Mass. shot 48 percent for the game and hit 8 of 17 three-point attempts.

The Minutemen overcame 25 turnovers, 9 missed free throws and 1 long run by George Washington because they stuck to their game plan and didn't panic.

"We knew that this was a good team and that every time we slipped and turned it over they were going to get dunks and score," Freeman said. "We knew that if we made mistakes they would blow us out of the gym. Any time we face a team like that, we respond."

U-Mass. used its zone defense to swarm George Washington forward Pops Mensah-Bonsu, who picked up his third foul with 16:26 left but finished with 12 points, and the U-Mass. guards did an excellent job of extending to reach point guard T.J. Thompson, who was held to seven points on 3-of-11 shooting (1 of 6 on three-point attempts).

However, Thompson's only three-pointer came at the perfect time. With 18 seconds remaining and the Colonials trailing 70-67, Thompson hit a long three from in front of the George Washington bench. U-Mass. guard Chris Chadwick then missed a shot as time expired, and the game went to overtime.

Neither team scored until almost three minutes had elapsed in overtime, but George Washington appeared to be in good shape when a dunk by Mensah-Bonsu gave the Colonials a 74-71 lead with just more than a minute remaining.

However, U-Mass. forward Maurice Maxwell swished a three-pointer from the corner to tie the score and George Washington guard J.R. Pinnock, an 88 percent free throw shooter entering the game, missed the front end of a one-and-one situation, setting the stage for Anderson's drive and Freeman's finish.

"The bottom line is that we didn't hit shots," Hobbs said. "We're a good shooting team, but we didn't make them today. It was nice to make a run and get back into the game, but it was frustrating that we allowed the lead to happen."

GW Finds the Glass Slipper Is Now on the Other Foot
By Mike Wise, The Washington Post, 1/16/2005

The hyperbole kept flowing for a month, soon after George Washington knocked off Michigan State and Maryland on consecutive days in early December. The Colonials theatrically picked apart two of the nation's premier college basketball programs, earned a top 25 ranking for the first time in six years and made their legions hearken back to the upset-minded days of Mike Jarvis's clubs.

Who wanted to wait two weekends into March to see if the slipper fit? Karl Hobbs's team was already looking elegant in January.

But here's the problem with being the feel-good, Little Team That Could: After enough giant-killing, you become the ogre yourself -- irrespective of enrollment or cash-strapped boosters. One afternoon at home, you become someone else's Maryland or Michigan State.

And then a big, left-handed kid with a soft touch gets behind your big guy, 6-foot-9 Pops Mensah-Bonsu. Rashaun Freeman catches an alley-oop pass with less than a second left and does everything but call "glass" before sucking the emotion out of the arena in overtime.

U-Mass. 76, No. 21 GW 74.

Hello, Atlantic 10 Conference adversity. Goodbye, top 25.

No worries, Colonial brethren. GW will be back, especially after overcoming an 18-point deficit in the final 13 minutes 33 seconds to force overtime yesterday afternoon at Smith Center, where Freeman converted that pretty pass from Anthony Anderson. GW, which lost its first game here in nearly 11 months, went from lasting barely a few minutes into the second half against the Minutemen to nearly pulling off one of the most riveting victories in this quaint, loud gym.

The whole affair was wild. Out of rhythm for much of the afternoon, the Colonials could not buy a basket in their half-court offense before deciding to embark on a 17-0 binge and knot the score with 7 1/2 minutes left. U-Mass.'s Chris Chadwick and GW's T.J. Thompson traded huge baskets in the final 28 seconds of regulation like pugs trading overhand rights.

There was also that battle of diminutive coaches frantically working the sideline, GW's Hobbs vs. U-Mass.'s Steve Lappas, a genuine beggar for calls. They played a no-harm, no-ambulance game approved by a liberal officiating crew.

And with all due respect to Maryland-Temple, Georgetown-Villanova and George Mason-Old Dominion yesterday, when it ended, GW-U-Mass. was the best thrill-seeking, 40-plus-minute ride in local college basketball.

Hobbs got a little testy after the game when a reporter (okay, it was me) asked if his team needed a better half-court offense if it had NCAA tournament aspirations. At first, you figured he was a little sensitive after a rough loss. But his concern turns out to be the concern of many black coaches at many different levels: that his players, most of whom are black, will be viewed strictly as athletes, whose informal dunk contest during pregame warmups will be more remembered than the backdoor cuts and perseverance to get back into a game that was all but lost.

And as a bright, young coach who may one day use this job as a steppingstone just like Jarvis, Hobbs, 43, probably does not want to be construed as a roll-it-out-and-let-'em-play guy whose only forte is recruiting. Fair enough.

The man has put the program back on the national map in the past three-plus seasons. Beyond Pops and hops, George Washington also has smarts and grit -- enough of the latter to stage yesterday's comeback.

But U-Mass.'s ability to stick with a zone, pack it in and force the Colonials into mistakes in that half-court game helped lead to the upset. GW kept forcing a high-low game, trying to dump it inside to Mensah-Bonsu even though he was sandwiched near the rim. It led to some crucial turnovers. When the Colonials could not crack that zone, at times it looked a little reminiscent of how Hobbs's former mentor, Jim Calhoun, used to lose games at Connecticut -- where Hobbs served as an assistant for eight years.

There was some postgame whispering about Hobbs not putting Mensah-Bonsu back in the game until it was too late, but that's ticky-tacky. Pops got the crowd into it with some woofing after a couple of big baskets and a blocked shot, but for the most part, he was outplayed by Freeman.

Where does GW go from here? The A-10 championship is still the bet. The league is down after Saint Joseph's amazing 30-2 season. Saint Joe's, Xavier and Dayton are decent, but they're all hovering around .500 and hardly top-25 material. At 11-3, GW is. After this afternoon, their only other losses have come at Wake Forest and West Virginia.

Even at the Colonials' worst yesterday, Hobbs kept shuttling in players -- his rotation was nine deep. All of them refused to panic when they got behind, including freshman guard Maureece Rice. The kid has this economy of movement, a little stutter-step game in which he usually makes the right play -- no matter how many bodies are flying past him.

As a whole, when neither their vertical leap nor their jumpers worked, the Colonials finally started to move their feet laterally, cutting off angles and lanes. That's why they came back.

They turned the Smith Center into a loud bandbox, erasing an almost 20-point deficit in less than six blinding minutes. They made the building reverberate with noise and hope. Rugby shirts and hideous hats starting bobbing up and down. The annoying Robin-Ficker-in-training fan finally shut up from about five rows back across from the U-Mass. bench. Their Little Team That Could was all the way back.

When Freeman caught that pass behind the defense, he not only quieted the arena but killed a nice little plotline the past month.

It's still fixable in time to wield the stone in March, after the rest of the A-10 stops hunting GW.

Bottom line: As area college hoops go, the Colonials are still the best entertainment value in town. This was less a loss to be crestfallen about than it was a January game to take a lesson from.

Freeman again is the hero
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/17/2005

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Junior big man Rashaun Freeman poked a little fun at himself Saturday after the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team beat No. 21 George Washington 76-74 in overtime.

I didn't run into the stands this time, he said in his postgame radio interview, joking about his momentary lapse of reason at the end of the Minutemen's upset of Connecticut on Dec. 9. Like he did against the Huskies, Freeman scored the winning basket Saturday.

With the score tied 74-74 and less than 10 seconds remaining, senior guard Anthony Anderson looked inside for either Freeman or freshman Jeff ''Big Deli'' Salovski. Anderson drove two steps and lofted a pass to Freeman. Without landing, Freeman banked it in with 0.4 seconds left for the game-winning basket.

''It was close enough for me to get the easy layup,'' Freeman said. ''I honestly didn't think I was going to get the ball. It just happened at the right time.''

After the Colonials' desperation attempt didn't come close at the buzzer, the Minutemen (8-6, 2-2 Atlantic 10) flooded the court to celebrate the team's first road win of the season. It was the first loss both at home and in the conference for the Colonials (11-3, 3-1).

UMass faces Fordham at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mullins Center.

The Minutemen almost didn't need overtime for the second straight Saturday. With 27.8 seconds left in regulation, UMass senior point guard Chris Chadwick scored driving to the basket and was fouled. He made the free throw to give the Minutemen a 70-67 lead.

George Washington guard T.J. Thompson answered at the other end, burying a 3-pointer from the top of the key to tie it. Chadwick tried an encore of his previous effort, but the shot didn't fall and the game was extended.

Neither team scored in the first 2 minutes, 48 seconds of overtime before Freeman broke the ice with one of two free throws. Pops Mensah-Bonsu made two from the line and then dunked for a 74-71 Colonial lead.

Chadwick found Maurice Maxwell open in front of the UMass bench and the sophomore knocked down the game-tying 3-pointer.

Salovski blocked Thompson at the other end, but George Washington maintained possession when the ball went out of bounds. Anderson fouled J.R. Pinnock on the entry pass. The sophomore missed the front end of the one-and-one and Salovski corralled it, setting up the possession that led to Freeman's basket.

''Anthony made a great pass to Ray at the end of the game,'' UMass coach Steve Lappas said. ''He made the right play. He drove it and passed it to Ray.''

After struggling in a 59-52 loss Wednesday at Saint Joseph's, Freeman dominated throughout Saturday with 27 points and 15 rebounds.

Lappas said he was pleased with the way his team bounced back after losing to the Hawks. ''I have to figure out a way to make these guys feel like we stink for every game because we do better when we think we stink,'' Lappas said.

UMass didn't stink early. The Minutemen looked like they might win going away when they turned a 10-point halftime lead into an 18-point advantage (55-37) with 13:31 remaining. But the Colonials, who had struggled against UMass' zone for the first 27 minutes of the game, finally found their offense.

They ran off 17 straight points and, after a Freeman jumper, they scored five more to seize the lead and momentum at 59-57.

But the Minutemen stayed in the zone that frustrated George Washington early and the two teams stayed close down the stretch to set up the late-game dramatics.

''I thought their zone controlled the tempo and we just did not shoot the ball well. We became a little frustrated because we just did not make jump shots,'' George Washington coach Karl Hobbs said. ''Give them credit for staying in the zone even when we made our run. They didn't panic.''

Lappas expected a surge would come eventually.

''I knew they'd make a run. They're a great team,'' Lappas said. ''Of course they're going to come back at you. They're not going to lose by 18 or 20 at home. You just want to walk out like we did and win it at the end.''

At the end of the game after the short celebration, the Minutemen huddled together, not to savor the moment, but to prepare for future ones.

''We said we need to build on this,'' Maxwell said. ''It's the second time we got a big win nobody saw coming. We have to come together.''

Freeman bounces back
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/17/2005

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Rashaun Freeman's formula for fixing what ails him has always been the same: Work harder. That's how he's approached improving everything from his schoolwork as a freshman to occasional problems in his game as a junior.

After struggling against Saint Joseph's Wednesday, Freeman promised to work harder again.

It paid off again. The Minuteman junior center shook off Wednesday's six-point, five-rebound, six-turnover performance and dominated Saturday as UMass defeated No. 21 George Washington 76-74 in overtime.

''I knew I had to bounce back because my team needs me,'' Freeman said. ''I just knew I had to play hard and be aggressive.''

Freeman posted season highs in both scoring (27 points) and rebounding (15 boards) and made the game-winning basket for good measure.

''He had the best game of his career,'' UMass coach Steve Lappas said. ''He's had some great ones, but this was the best game of his career.''

The game marked Freeman's fourth double-double of the season and the 16th of his career.

CHADWICK IN CRUNCH TIME - Lappas continued to use senior point guard Chris Chadwick in crunch time, allowing senior Anthony Anderson to play off the ball.

''Coach has been showing more confidence in me and playing me a lot more,'' Chadwick said.

Lappas' confidence in Chadwick is justified. He scored a season-high 12 points Saturday and had a key three-point play late in regulation. Not normally a long-range shooter, Chadwick had two big 3-pointers late in the first half, including a long, off-balance one with the shot clock nearly gone.

''You have to give it to the kid,'' Lappas said. ''When you make a shot like that you think to yourself: Maybe it's our day today.''

CLOSE GAMES - UMass is now 6-0 in games decided by four points or less. The Minutemen's experience in close games seemed to pay off as they were poised late.

The Colonials hadn't played in a game decided by less than six points all season and only two decided by less than 10.

RANKED WINS - UMass has now upended two ranked teams in the same season for the first time since 1998-99 when the Minutemen defeated No. 15 Kansas and No. 24 Temple. UMass beat UConn, then ranked No. 7, on Dec. 9.

''I thought we proved that the UConn game wasn't a fluke,'' sophomore guard Maurice Maxwell said.

VIGGIANO WORKS OUT - Junior forward Jeff Viggiano sat out again with his ankle injury, but worked out on the court before the game.

He will be reevaluated this week.

NEXT UP - The Minutemen will host Fordham at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Rams (6-9, 2-2 A-10) are coming off a 76-74 upset of Xavier Sunday, behind 23 points and 11 rebounds by Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year favorite Bryant Dunston.

MISCELLANEOUS - The win ended UMass' eight-game losing streak on the road. ... Maxwell's 20 points were a career high. ... UMass has now won three straight games at the Smith Center. ... Anderson (1,121 career points) needs two points to pass Mike Williams in 26th place on the UMass career scoring list. ... George Washington's 10-point halftime deficit was their largest of the season. ... When the Minutemen took a 16-point lead in the second half, it was their largest of the season. ... George Washington alum Red Auerbach attended the game.

A journey into the heart of men's hoops
By Bob McGovern, The Daily Collegian Columnist, 1/26/2005

We were somewhere between our Nation's Capital and the cow-country of Western Massachusetts when the season started to kick in.

My colleague and I put over 800 miles on my sticker-clad green Jeep that day. We went south, straight to Washington D.C., for a two-hour time frame to cover the Massachusetts men's basketball team against the No. 21 George Washington Colonials.

I had my iPod, he had his portable Sirius radio, and on the backburner we had three CDs worth of our radio commentary from UMass' 90-86 triple-overtime victory over Xavier on Jan. 8. Basically, we had some sports to talk, and after two weeks in the monotony of an Amherst winter, stuck in a smelly Jeep... it was going to be a long conversation.

We knew we would have to pay our way on that frigid Saturday morning, but it didn't matter, we were going to hit I-95 with conviction. There was little doubt that the game we were about to witness could only go two ways: a dose of reality, or a mind-bending upset.

If you follow UMass basketball, you know what happened.

No one could have expected that the Minutemen would take this one the distance, but even fewer could have anticipated the 76-74 overtime victory. All 4,310 in attendance that day at the Smith Center had an air about them. They were looking past this Maroon and White team seven driving hours removed from home. But who could blame them? UMass' lackluster 59-52 loss to Saint Joseph's only three nights prior hardly put up an facade of intimdation.

We sat at the press table 20 minutes before the game and couldn't look more out of place. Both of us had five o'clock shadows, twelve hours after the fact. The change of pace from asphault at 90 miles per hour to the GW hardwood left us in silence. We glared past pages of statistics and let the ambience of that glorified high school gym sink deep into our fatigued eyes.

Then the Colonials woke us up, real quick.

It was like a scene out of every generic sports movie of all time. Here was the best team in the conference going through the simplicity of a pregame warmup. However, there was nothing simple or warm about the way GW attacked its home court.

Pops Mensah-Bonsu, one of the premiere big men in the Atlantic 10 this year, took a simple feed, elevatated and dunked the ball so hard that for a split second the rim was at a 90 degree angle. Then came another, and before the game even started, the Colonials had their crowd into it, including a couple of good ol' boys from New England.

What happened over the next two and a half hours are burned into the same compartment of my memory as UMass' historic 61-59 victory over UConn on Dec. 9.

With time expiring and the game tied at 74, senior captain Anthony Anderson took it upon himself to control the game's tempo. He shook one defender and in leu of taking a shot he tossed a picture-perfect pass to Rashaun Freeman who tipped in the game-winning basket.

Absolute and complete silence.

An entire sea of Gold and Blue, that for the entirety of the game had been jarring the Minutemen and head coach Seve Lappas, fell silent. They had just witnessed the first upset of the year and sat powerless as their team fell from the national rankings.

Then, seconds after making one of the most important passes in his career, Anderson made his biggest contribution for the Minutemen as a captain.

As the UMass celebration ended and the players were prepared to clear off the court, Anderson called for his team inside the paint where Freeman had just won the game. He put himself in the middle, as he usually does for team huddles, and told his team something that they needed to hear all year. He looked at the circle of smiling faces and made it clear that it was time for the Minutemen to harness the momentum, it was time to go foward.

On the way home we got lost in the city, did a few 360s around the Foggy Bottom district of D.C., then careened north. It was hard to focus on the task at hand, we had just witnessed one of the more confusing athletic victories of the past year, a quandry that no odometer-pounding mileage could explain.

How was it possible that a team that lost to Northeastern, got crushed by Miami, and was 1-2 in conference could stand a chance against this team? There were no numbers to crunch, we were simply left with the reality of the situation and the thought that, with Fordham coming to town, that UMass had set itself up perfectly for another loss to a lesser team.

Although the Minutemen silenced all doubters with a 13-point drubbing of the Rams a week ago today, momentum has been a fickle mistress for this team. After beating UConn, they lost to Miami, then they went on a three-game win streak only to lose two in a row.

Now, with NIT hopes and NCAA dreams, UMass finds itself in a potentially disasterous position. It has to face three of the A-10's worst teams, (St. Bonaventure twice, Richmond, and floundering Rhode Island), before taking on Florida State at home.

Anyone who has followed UMass basketball over the past few years knows that there are no easy wins for this team. However, if the Minutemen want to stand a chance at playing in March, they must not let their own momentum be their demise.

So here they are at midseason, and for the first time in nearly four years, they actually have a shot.

UMass has changed point guards (Chris Chadwick for Anderson), lost Jeff Viggiano to an ankle injury for several important games, had its captain (Anderson) briefly suspended, and yet it has gone and won enough games to garner votes from the Associated Press to be one of the top 25 teams in the country.

So where do they go from here? Do all roads lead to the postseason, or will UMass fall short yet again? Only 15 men on this campus know the answer to that, it's just a matter of whether they are truly ready to take the test.

I guess I'll just keep the gas tank full.
