Lappas cautious about woeful Bonnies
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/26/2005

Winters are always long in Olean, N.Y. Its latitude and lake-effect weather assures that. But recent winters have been a little longer than normal.

St. Bonaventure's fans, among the nation's most loyal, are suffering through their third consecutive rough basketball season. It started in 2002-03 when the Bonnies became a national story after the school broke NCAA junior college transfer guidelines by allowing forward Jamil Terrell to play despite earning only a welding certificate at a Georgia community college. The Bonnies were barred from the Atlantic 10 playoffs that season, resulting in players boycotting their final two regular-season games and leading to NCAA sanctions a year later.

The incident led to players transferring and probation for St. Bonaventure. The program, which was once known for overachieving, became a punch line to a lot of jokes.

This year the punch lines have mostly stemmed from the scores and the record. The Bonnies, who were bad last year, are worse this year. They enter tonight's game at 7 against the Minutemen with a 1-15 mark (the lone win came against Alcorn State, including 0-5 in the Atlantic 10.

Still, UMass coach Steve Lappas said his team can't take the Bonnies lightly.

''We definitely don't want our guys looking at their record,'' Lappas said. ''We saw the Duquesne game (Sunday) and they played very well on the road. It's definitely one of those games. We're approaching this the way we approach every game. If we do the things we talk about, we'll be successful. They play hard and what happens is they feel like they have nothing to lose. They come out every game and they let it all go. It's a credit to them.''

St. Bonaventure coach Anthony Solomon said his team is getting better.

''We have improved in a lot of areas, but we haven't improved on the scoreboard,'' Solomon said. ''It gets old and it gets tiring when you talk about improving but you haven't improved on the scoreboard. But I think we have improved. We may not be winning games the way we would want, but we'll persevere through that. - Our attitude is to strive to get better, because we know we have better days ahead.''

The Bonnies, who have been outscored by an average of 15.8 points per game this season, have gotten most of their points from three players. Newcomer Wade Dunston leads the team with 12.4 points per game followed by veterans Patrick Lottin (12) and Ahmad Smith (11.7).

''The three guys - Smith, Lottin, and Dunston - are all very capable. Smith hurt us last year, especially up there,'' Lappas said. ''If those three guys all play good it makes life a lot more difficult.''

NOTES: Lappas said the Minutemen would likely get more minutes from junior forward Jeff Viggiano, who returned to action Saturday against Saint Joseph's after spraining his ankle Dec. 23.

''Significantly more,'' Lappas said. ''He felt good after the game'' on Sunday.

Massachusetts 82, St. Bonaventure 78 (2 OT)
From The Associated Press, 1/26/2005

OLEAN, N.Y. (AP) - Maurice Maxwell scored two of his 20 points from the free-throw line in double overtime to lift Massachusetts over St. Bonaventure 82-78 Wednesday.

Rashaun Freeman added 18 points, including five of the Minutemen's seven points in the first overtime.

Wade Dunston led St. Bonaventure (1-16, 0-5 Atlantic 10), scoring seven of his 28 points in the second overtime.

Trailing 36-26 at halftime, the Minutemen (10-7, 4-3) went on a 17-5 run to pull ahead 43-41 with 13:11 left in regulation. The teams tied the score eight times, and Dunston hit a 3-pointer with 10.5 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

The win marks the first time the Minutemen have rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to win since Jan. 6, 2001.

Stephane Lasme scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds for Massachusetts.

For the Bonnies, Ahmad Smith scored 21 points, pulled down seven rebounds and had eight assists.

Quotes
From UMass Athletics, 1/26/2005

Head Coach Steve Lappas On The Close Win:
"I'm happy we won, but I'm not happy with our first half performance. I thought we played very well and executed our plays in the second half and the overtimes. Take nothing away from St. Bonaventure, they played very well and their guys hit some incredible shots tonight. I told my guys, with one minute to go - the further the game progresses, the better we are. St. Bonaventure made some unbelievable shots, but we did well on both ends."

Lappas On His Halftime Talk With The Team:
"I didn't yell, I just told them we couldn't play like we did in the first half and expect to win. When we put ourselves in situations like that by turning the ball over the way we did in the first half, we are putting ourselves in danger."

Lappas On The Play of Stephane Lasme:
"This was definitely the best game of his career. If he's active on the glass, he starts to be more confident in the game. He was a beast on the offensive glass and that fed his offensive game. He had six of our 10 offensive rebounds tonight and that says a lot. People are game-planning for him every game, but he had 18 points in the second half. He had a tremendous effort today, I told him he has to be the best offensive rebounder in the league."

Lappas On Overtime Games This Season:
"I was laughing to myself when we ended regulation tied. I told the guys that we were good with overtime games and that I knew if we kept it close, then we had a chance the way we were playing this season."

Stephane Lasme On His Performance:
"I just did what coach asked me to do all week. He asked me to take over more and be more aggressive in games and that's what i did."

Lasme On The Team In Overtime:
"We played with our hearts in the overtime periods. We don't worry about things when we have overtimes, we just go out there and play. I was just happy to be able to help my teammates out today and get the win."

Bonnies Head Coach Anthony Solomon:
"Exciting ball game, a very exciting basketball game. There were two very good teams. They were a group of young men who made me proud tonight with their consistent effort to improve. I am extremely proud of them."

Minutemen avoid shocker
They need 2 OTs to beat Bonnies
By Bill Hoppe, The Boston Globe Correspondent, 1/27/2005

OLEAN, N.Y. -- Steve Lappas voiced his concerns before his team arrived here. The 1-15 record, 0-5 conference mark, and 321st RPI ranking meant nothing to the University of Massachusetts coach. He knew any trip to snowy and isolated Olean is treacherous, regardless of the caliber of St. Bonaventure or road conditions on the nearly two-hour bus trip from Buffalo.

Lappas almost realized his worst fear last night at the Reilly Center.

The Minutemen fell behind early but rallied to beat the Bonnies, 82-78, in double overtime before 3,581 raucous fans.

"You know what the bottom line is? 10-7," Lappas said of his team's record. "That's the bottom line."

Rashaun Freeman's basket with 28 seconds left in the second overtime broke a 78-78 tie, and Maurice Maxwell's two free throws sealed UMass's first rally from a 10-point halftime deficit in 120 games (Jan. 6, 2001, against George Washington). The Minutemen (4-3 Atlantic 10) are 7-0 in games decided by 4 points or fewer this season.

"That's the difference between 10-7 and [the] 5-12 that we were last year," Lappas said. "That is the exact difference. Every close game we've been in this year, we've won.

"Our guys really believe that when the game is tight they're going to win. It was just another one of those nights for us."

For 20 minutes, the Minutemen's upset wins over Connecticut and George Washington became distant memories as they struggled with one of the nation's worst teams.

Down, 18-6, less than eight minutes into the game, the Bonnies used runs of 10-2 and 20-0 to stun the Minutemen for a 36-26 halftime lead and whip the crowd into a frenzy.

UMass committed 14 of its 20 turnovers in the half, and Freeman scored 1 point.

The Minutemen stormed out in the second half with a 17-5 run and took the lead seven minutes in.

Freeman, Maxwell, and Stephane Lasme each led the Minutemen with 18 points.

"People are game-planning for him every game," Lappas said of Freeman, the team's leading scorer. "In the end we got it to him. What do you want him to score, 50?"

Lasme added 10 rebounds to his career-high point total for his first career double-double.

"So far it is [my best game]," the forward said.

Neither team took a commanding lead down the stretch or in the overtimes. Lasme's two free throws with 22 seconds left forced the second overtime. Wade Dunston's 3-pointer with 17 seconds left forced the first overtime for St. Bonaventure.

"With about a minute to go and it was a 3-point game, I said, `This is right up our alley. We're definitely going to win this because we've won every game,' " Lappas said. "The closer they are, the more overtimes we play, the better we like it. The execution was really tremendous."

Dunston led all scorers with 28 points, and Ahmad Smith added 21 for the Bonnies.

Moral victory only win by Bona
UMass leaves Olean with double-overtime decision
By Amy Moritz, The Buffalo News Sports Reporter, 1/27/2005

OLEAN - In typical Anthony Solomon style, he talked unceasingly about how proud he was of his team.

If this season is about baby steps, the St. Bonaventure men's basketball team inched forward Wednesday night.

Wade Dunston hit a dramatic three-pointer with 20 seconds left in regulation to tie the game against Massachusetts at 60-60. Yet the season of frustration and disappointment continued as Bona played two overtimes before dropping a heartbreaking 82-78 decision in front of 3,581 in the Reilly Center.

It was heartbreaking because the Bonnies seemingly did enough things right to finally - finally - earn their second win of the season and their first in the Atlantic 10.

Instead, the game went to the dreaded "moral victory" column as the team fell to 1-16 overall, 0-6 in the A-10.

"These young men made me very proud tonight of their consistent ability to improve," Solomon said. "The ball didn't bounce our way down the stretch, but I thought our effort was fantastic. I just want us to remain consistent with our focus and concentration.

"It's an experience to grow from. We put ourselves in a position to be successful and had a great opportunity to win, and it didn't fall our way."

The bright spots were numerous. Bona came back from an early 10-point deficit and used a 20-0 run to end the first half leading, 36-26. It absorbed a second-half run by UMass, which took a 43-41 lead with 12:57 left in regulation.

The teams gave and took through the rest of the half before Dunston's shot sent the game to overtime.

The Bonnies had a chance to win in the first overtime. With the score tied, 67-67, they got the ball with 21 seconds left. Ahmad Smith dribbled a few feet back from the top of the three-point circle. He didn't make his move until there was less than five seconds left, and his off-balance jumper missed the mark.

"I always talk to my young men about being honest and direct," Solomon said with a smile, patting Smith and Dunston on their shoulders at the postgame news conference. "We didn't draw it up exactly that way, but we will improve upon that the next time."

In the second overtime, Bona went up by three on a layup by Dunston, but it slipped away as the Bonnies' shots rimmed out. The game was tied at 78-78 with 28 seconds left, then Rashaan Freeman hit a layup to give UMass the lead. Dunston missed a three-pointer, and Maurice Maxwell hit two foul shots to secure the four-point win.

It was new territory for the Bonnies. It was their first OT game of the season and their first double-overtime game since the NCAA Tournament loss to Kentucky in 2000. In fact, just being in the game in the final few minutes had an unusual feel for Bona, with only six of its 17 games decided by 10 points or less.

Meanwhile, UMass (10-7, 4-3 A-10) thrives on close games. The Minutemen had already won in overtime and triple-overtime, and with Wednesday's win they improved to 7-1 in games decided by less than eight points.

"With about a minute to go when it was a three-point game, I said to our guys, "This is right up our alley,' " UMass coach Steve Lappas said. "The closer we are and the more overtime we play, the better we like it. The execution by our guys was excellent on both ends of the floor. Our guys believe that when the game is tight we're going to win. We know in a close game what to do. We had a couple of mistakes, I'm sure, but we made every play that we needed to make."

Dunston scored a career-high 28 points, though he struggled at times with the ball, committing 10 turnovers. Smith, who played all 50 minutes, committed just one turnover with 21 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.

Mass disappointment for Bona
By Vinny Pezzimenti, The Olean Times-Herald, 1/27/2005

ST. BONAVENTURE — In a season St. Bonaventure fans would rather soon enough forget, their Bonnies gave them a performance to remember.

Since November, bad basketball has been the way at the Reilly Center. But on Wednesday night, the smattering of locals and raucous crowd of students were afforded the opportunity to savor their team for not just 40 but 50 minutes.

Although Bona fell 82-78 in double overtime to Atlantic 10 East foe Massachusetts, and the exhausted congregation of 3,581 supporters filed out into the cold night disappointed again, the Bonnies’ improvement was on full display under the bright lights of the RC.

The Bonnies dropped to 1-16 on the season, 0-6 in the conference, and still haven’t won a home game (0-7). Yet, coach Anthony Solomon and his players were able to hold their heads high.

“The ball didn’t bounce our way down the stretch a time or two,” Solomon said. “We can’t do anything about that. But I thought our effort was fantastic. We made plays, they made plays, and I just want us to remain consistent with our focus and concentration on improvement.”

When the pressure was on, the Bonnies lived up to it. When they need a bucket, a defensive stop or a rebound, they came up with it ...

Until the last 28 seconds of the second overtime.

The Minutemen (10-7, 4-3), who went to 7-0 in games decided by four points or less, had the upper hand in experience. They boast last-second wins over defending NCAA champion Connecticut, at then-No. 22 George Washington, and a triple OT thriller against Xavier.

“They made some unbelievable shots that I thought were pretty well defended,” said UMass coach Steve Lappas.

The Bonnies didn’t make it easy.

They led by 10 points at the half and had a shot to win it at the end of the first overtime.

Even though there were several things to be encouraged about, it was still a painful setback for a Bona team that has lost by double figures 11 times on the season.

“This one hurts,” Solomon said. “I’ll admit that. It hurt all of us. We play these games to win and it hasn’t fallen our way many times this year.”

Watching the final eight minutes of the first half, it was hard to believe the Bonnies had just one win. And it was harder to believe they would end up on the losing end again.

The Bonnies looked more like the “Showtime” Lakers of the ’80s than A-10 cellar dwellers.

With junior guard Ahmad Smith cast as Magic Johnson, Bona ran off 20 straight points to turn an 8-point deficit into a 12-point cushion.

“It’s one of the few runs we’ve had all season,” Smith said. “We just wanted the fans to get into it. We were excited. It was a great run.”

Smith registered four points on the run and directed his team to several easy baskets with the help of 14 first-half turnovers committed by UMass.

The 6-5 Smith threw a brilliant behind-the-back pass to a streaking Patrick Lottin who laid the ball through the net, sending the crowd into an uproar and Lappas searching for a referee to call a timeout.

“I felt good,” said Smith, who had 14 points and four assists at intermission. “I’m glad I completed (the pass) so I didn’t have to run back to the bench to see coach’s reaction.”

Solomon added: “It’s OK as long as it’s executed.”

The Bonnies’ execution faltered slightly in the second half, however.

The Minutemen opened on a 15-5 run that spanned seven minutes and gathered their first lead since the 5:38 mark of the first half.

UMass held a 3-point advantage with under a minute left in regulation before the resilient Bonnies struck again.

Wade Dunston, who is fast becoming Bona’s go-to-guy, started to drive to the basket, stepped back, and drilled a trey with 20 seconds on the clock to essentially send the game to overtime.

“Tonight was a great example of a group of young men who worked hard and had great carryover from practice to the game,” Solomon said.

The shocked Minutemen would see plenty more of Dunston, who registered a career-high 28 points. The 6-4 junior college transfer scored 10 of the Bonnies’ 18 OT points and 13 of their final 21.

Dunston hit another triple in the first overtime and Smith hit a pair of free throws to give Bona a 2-point edge. Stephane Lasme converted two foul shots for UMass to tie it with 21 seconds left and the ball was once again in the hands of Smith.

He drove toward the basket as the clock dipped under five seconds but was forced to throw up a fall-away 16-footer that didn’t even hit rim.

“We didn’t draw it up exactly that way,” said Solomon, who called a timeout to huddle his team for the final shot. “We will improve on that the next time.”

The Bonnies weren’t quite finished yet, though. Guard Kern Carter hit an unbelievable runner to tie the game at 75 and Dunston converted a traditional 3-point play that knotted the score at 78.

Forward Rashaun Freeman scored underneath to give UMass the lead and Dunston’s 3-point attempt that followed fell way short. The Minutemen iced it with free throws.

“This is just another experience for us to grow upon,” Solomon said.

Smith recorded 21 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and committed just one turnover in playing the entire game.

“Coach has told me to attack,” he said. “He’s been telling me to attack since the games in Texas (tournament in late December). I think that has improved my game, not playing on my heels a lot. I think I played a great game but that doesn’t matter.”

Junior Patrick Lottin added 10 points and five boards off the bench, but fouled out in the first overtime.

Freeman, Lasme and Maurice Maxwell all scored 18 points for UMass, which overcame a 10-point deficit for the first time since January of 2001 — a span of 120 games.

Lasme’s point total was a career high and Freeman, who was averaging 19 points the last three games, had 17 in the second half after taking just one shot in the first half.

“The first 20 minutes we made mistakes,” said Lappas. “We didn’t get it to (Freeman) like we should, like we have every game this year. But in the end we got it to him.”

Bona, off to its worst A-10 start since the 1990-91 team went winless in conference, hosts Temple Saturday (7 p.m.) The Bonnies lost to the Owls 71-47 eight days ago in Philadelphia.

“I wanted this for our young men,” Solomon said. “No one’s experiencing this more direct than they are. We had our share of opportunities and I just wanted them to get a ‘W’ tonight.”

Students’ return a crowd pleaser for Bona
By Vinny Pezzimenti, The Olean Times-Herald, 1/27/2005

ST. BONAVENTURE - The attendance figure was just 3,581 at the Reilly Center Wednesday during St. Bonaventure’s 82-78 double overtime Atlantic 10 loss to Massachusetts, but that didn’t mean the crowd didn’t play a role.

Despite the many empty seats (2,500) short of capacity, the RC faithful was the most vocal it has been all season.

Even though the Bonnies fell to 0-7 at home, the boisterous gathering was behind the team from the tip and caused UMass coach Steve Lappas to burn timeouts at several junctures to manipulate the momentum of the game.

“I think the fans helped us out a lot, especially the student section because they were pumped up and they were yelling stuff,” said Bona guard Wade Dunston, who led all scorers with 28 points. “I think it helped us get our emotions up.”

It was the second smallest crowd at the RC on the year. The George Mason game in December drew almost 400 less.

The students were on campus for a game for the first time since Dec. 4 when Bona hosted Cornell.

Bona coach Anthony Solomon was pleased with the Reilly Rowdies but is still looking for a little more from the fans of an arena that three years ago was deemed one of the toughest to play in for opponents.

“I give the fans a ‘B’ tonight in terms of the students,” Solomon said. “They were there but there were a lot of empty seats in that area that could be filled.

“When I took over this opportunity as the head basketball coach at St. Bonaventure, I talked about marching forward together. These are the moments I was anticipating that while you may not be winning as much as you like ... can we experience these growing pains together. That’s our staff, our young men, our university community, as well as our local community.”

Other news and notes:

-Bona hadn’t been involved in a double overtime game since the NCAA first-round tournament game against Kentucky in 2000.

The last time the Bonnies played an overtime game was a 107-98 loss at Niagara Dec. 7, 2003.

-Junior Ahmad Smith played the entire game for the second straight outing. He leads the Bonnies in minutes played at over 35 a game and is up over 37 a game in conference contests.

“If we would have gone two (overtimes) more he would have played 60 minutes,” Solomon said.

-The Minutemen held a 37-31 advantage on the boards. Stephane Lasme nabbed a game-high 10 for UMass while Smith recorded seven for Bona.

Smith has led the team in rebounding nine times this season. He also tied a career-high in assists with eight.

-The Bonnies took 14 more shots but UMass attempted 23 more free throws and made 15 more than Bona.

-Dunston (28 points) was the top scorer for the Bonnies for the eighth time this season and fourth consecutive game.

-The Bonnies recorded a season-high 19 assists on 31 baskets and their 78 points were the most since an 80-66 win over Alcorn State Dec. 29.

-Bona was without forward Brian Gibbs for the fourth straight game.

The sophomore is recovering from a virus that affected his heart. He will also miss Saturday’s home game with Temple.

-Yankuba Camara and Patrick Lottin fouled out, marking the first time this season two Bonnies have fouled out in the same game.

-UMass upped its record to 33-17 in the all-time series and 12-11 at the RC.

Maybe all Solomon needs IS more time
By Chuck Pollock, The Olean Times-Herald, 1/27/2005

ST. BONAVENTURE - Maybe Anthony Solomon has been leveling with us the whole time.

The second-year St. Bonaventure basketball coach, who owns exactly eight wins in 45 games — only two in the last 30 — has almost sounded like an answering machine this season.

Call his house when nobody’s home and you hear the same thing over and over.

He talks about patience, the process of rejuvenating a program from the ashes of an eligibility scandal and the fact his team is improving incrementally.

But the losses keep mounting and even in the Bonnies’ worst performances, Solomon won’t admit they looked bad, played lousy, or took a step backward.

It’s almost as if he felt criticizing his squad after a lackluster effort would be admitting it wasn’t very good and destroy its psyche.

Then something happens such as Wednesday night at the Reilly Center, and it occurs to you that while Solomon might be the original cockeyed optimist ... there’s also merit in some of his contentions about the Bonnies’ future.

LET THE record show that St. Bonaventure lost its Atlantic 10 meeting with Massachusetts, 82-78 in double overtime, last night.

But this was different from the Bonnies’ six previous RC defeats.

A disappointing crowd of 3,581, despite the students being back from break, stayed glued in place until the final horn.

There was excitement and enthusiasm reminiscent of better days past ... and no booing or early exits.

The Bonnies’ lost because they don’t yet know how to win a close game ... and were playing a team that does.

Still, they went on a 20-0 first-half run that took them from eight down to 12 up.

Junior Ahmad Smith played all 50 minutes, scored 21 points, had a game-best eight assists — including one behind-the-back plus a see-it-to-believe-it in traffic — grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, notched two steals and committed only one turnover.

Guard Wade Dunston shook off a numbing 10 giveaways to score a career-high 28 points, including a pressure-filled trey that tied it with 20 seconds left in regulation.

And Saulis Dumbliauskas, a front-court player of marginal ability, was perfect from the field, grabbed a half-dozen boards and committed nary a turnover in a career-high 40 minutes.

AFTERWARD, Massachusetts coach Steve Lappas was numb as, for only the second time in his 17-year Division I career (Manhattan, Villanova, UMass), he won a game in which his team had surrendered at least 20 straight points.

“I told the guys at halftime (down 10), ‘When you go on the road, you’ve got to assert yourself from the first minute of the game no matter who you’re playing, where you’re playing or how you’re playing,’” he said. “And we didn’t do that.”

But the Minutemen are 7-0 in games decided by six-or-fewer points ... the Bonnies are 0-4.

“With about a minute to go it was a 3-point game,” Lappas recalled of UMass’ lead. “I told the guys, ‘This is right up our alley, we’re definitely going to win this because the closer (games) are, the more overtimes we play, the better we like it.’

“Our guys really believe, when the game is tight, we’re going to win and this was just another one of those nights for us. In a close game, we know what to do. We made every play that we needed to make when we needed to make them.”

He added, “When you don’t play well and you still go out and win in double overtime on the road, with young guys (six of UMass’ top eight are freshmen or sophomores), we did a lot of good things.

“That’s the difference between (the current) 10-7 and 5-12, which we were last year. Every close game we’ve been in, we’ve won. To have done what we’ve done in close games is definitely a product of our experience.”

And the fact UMass barely snatched a victory from a team that’s winless in the A-10 was a non-issue.

“I learned a long time ago,” Lappas said, “at the end of the year, when they add them all up, nobody asks (the score). The same applies to our beating (defending national champion) Connecticut ... it’s one of our 10 wins. They’re all the same in the end.”

BUT BONA, 0-5 in the conference and 0-7 in the RC, took a number of positives from loss No. 16.

“(This is) another one of our firsts this year,” said Solomon of the OT. “There were some times where we looked very youthful in the closing moments. But it’s one of those experiences that I think we’ll grow from. We certainly put ourselves in a position to be successful and have a great opportunity to win.

“It didn’t fall our way, but those who have seen us from November through now, this is a team that has grown tremendously. (Tonight) was one of those experiences that, if we learn from it, we’ll be better prepared for the next time.”

Lasme rescues UMass in two OTs
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/27/2005

OLEAN, N.Y. - The University of Massachusetts needed two overtimes to dodge a dangerous bullet Wednesday, but the Minutemen overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to beat St. Bonaventure 82-78 at the Reilly Center.

"I told our guys with a minute to go and it was a three-point game that this was right up our alley. We're definitely going to win this," UMass coach Steve Lappas joked. ''The closer they are the more overtimes we play, the more we like it. Our guys really believe when the game is tight, we're going to win.''

With the game tied 75-75 with under a minute left in the second overtime, Artie Bowers shook off a tough shooting night and knocked down a 3-pointer from the corner to put the Minutemen up 78-75. Wade Dunston answered with a three-point play followed by a St. Bonaventure time-out.

Rashaun Freeman spun on the baseline for a basket to put the Minutemen ahead 80-78 with 27.8 seconds left. Ahmad Smith hurried the ball up the floor and drove into the lane, but Stephane Lasme blocked his shot and Maurice Maxwell snared the rebound.

Saulius Dumbliauskas fouled Maxwell, who made both free throws to clinch UMass' third overtime victory of the season.

The block was the final piece of an impressive night for Lasme, who registered one of the best performances of his career. With St. Bonaventure double-teaming Freeman whenever he touched the ball and often when he didn't, Lasme was regularly open and took advantage. He had a career-high 18 points to go with 10 rebounds.

With UMass (10-7, 4-3 Atlantic 10) trailing 67-65 with 21.5 seconds left in the first overtime, Lasme made two free throws to force the second overtime.

Dunston, who led the Bonnies (1-16, 0-6) with 28 points, hit a 3-pointer with 20 seconds left to force the first overtime.

The win gave the Minutemen their 10th win and fourth conference victory of the season, matching their totals from last year.

''The execution was excellent on both ends. They made some great shots that I thought were well defended,'' Lappas said.

UMass returns homes to play Richmond at noon Saturday at the Mullins Center.

St. Bonaventure coach Anthony Solomon said he was pleased with his team's effort.

''Tonight was a great example of a group who worked hard, with a great carryover from practice,'' Solomon said. ''Tonight was another experience to grow from.''

UMass opened up an early 16-6 advantage and looked headed for a blowout, but the Bonnies ran off a late 20-0 run lead to take a 36-24 lead. Chris Chadwick (12 points) made a layup with one second left to cut the Bonnies' edge to 36-26 at halftime.

Led by Lasme, the Minutemen clawed back quickly to set up a back-and-forth second half.

''I told the guys when you go on the road you have to assert yourself from the first minutes and in the first half we didn't do that,'' Lappas said. ''In the second half we really got ourselves back in the game quickly.''

Freeman recovered from a slow first half (one point) to finish with 18 points and seven rebounds. Maxwell added 18 points, six assists and five rebounds.

Lappas praised the Bonnies.

''They've struggled, but they came out here and played great tonight,'' Lappas said. ''But in a close game we knew what to do. That's the difference between 5-12 last year and 10-7 this year. Every close game we've won. - We did some good things today and we did some bad things today, but the bottom line is we're 10-7.''

Nice try, Bonnies; Minitemen spring to action in eleventh hour
By Bryan Sick, The Wellsville Daily Reporter, 1/28/2005

ST. BONAVENTURE -- One of the Atlantic 10's most inconsistent teams proved Wednesday that it plays to the level of its competition.

The same Massachusetts team that had pulled off upsets against No. 7 Connecticut and No. 21 George Washington but had also lost badly to the likes of Northeastern and Miami came to the Reilly Center with a less-than-spectacular attendance of 3,581 and nearly allowed the Bonnies to pull off a huge upset.

After allowing a 20-0 run just before halftime, the Minutemen trailed the now 1-16 Bonnies 36-26 before pulling even and eventually escaping with an 82-78 win after two overtime periods.

"I was very upset, even though I didn't yell a lot at halftime, about having 14 turnovers," said UMass head coach Steve Lappas. "What I told the guys before the game was you go on the road, you have to assert yourself from the first minute of the game, no matter where you're playing or who you're playing or how you're playing. We didn't do that. And then in the first five minutes of the second half, we really got ourselves right back into the game quickly."

The game was the first since a Dec. 4 58-54 loss to Cornell that the Bonnies had a true home game with students on campus, and that student section -- albeit only filling about half the stands that it has when its team was more successful -- made its presence known.

"I think they do have an impact on the game," St. Bonaventure head coach Anthony Solomon said of the crowd. "We need that type of adrenaline. But I gave the fans a 'B' tonight in terms of the students. They were there, but there was a lot of empty seats in that area that could be filled."

No doubt, those empty seats are attributable to the Bonnies 1-16 start to the year, but those who were in attendance may have seen the Bonnies most impressive performance of the year.

"That was an exciting ballgame," said Solomon. "Exciting basketball game, two very competitive teams and one group of young men that made me very proud tonight because of their consistent ability to improve. The ball didn't bounce our way down the stretch a time or two. You can't do anything about that, but I thought our effort was fantastic."

In actuality, everything the Bonnies could have asked for down the stretch they got.

Down 60-57 with two minutes remaining, the Bonnies held UMass scoreless the rest of the way and, with 20 seconds remaining, got the much-needed 3-point bucket from Wade Dunston that sent the game into the first extra frame.

"I knew we needed a big shot and they were kind of backing up off me," said Dunston. "They were off on Patrick (Lottin) and Ahmad (Smith) so I ended up by myself and shot the ball and made it."

As if the dramatic shot sending the game into overtime wasn't enough, the Bonnies actually had a chance to put it away at the end of the first extra period, having a full 21 seconds to play with after the Minutemen tied the game at 67 on a pair of Stephane Lasme free throws.

Smith held the ball just inside of halfcourt and begin running the clock down, ensuring that the Bonnies got the final shot.

Smith, however, waved off pleas from his coaches to start the offense with about 12 seconds on the clock and instead drove the lane once the clock reached five seconds.

With the defense now knowing that Smith would be taking the shot, the Minutemen were able to put enough pressure on him when he drove the lane to alter his shot and force the second overtime.

"We didn't draw it up exactly that way," Solomon said of the play. "But we will improve upon that the next time."

The same dramatics at the end of regulation didn't repeat themselves as the second overtime drew to a close.

With 16 seconds remaining and the Minutemen holding an 80-78 lead, Lasme blocked a layup from Smith and after the ensuing timeout, Dunston couldn't connect on the game-winner from 3-point range.

Maurice Maxwell hit a pair of free throws to seal the Bonnies fate just before time expired.

The heartbreaking loss spoiled career nights from both Dunston and Smith.

Dunston finished with 28 points, surpassing his own total of 25 against George Washington for the team's best total of the year.

Smith was a triple threat for the Bonnies, scoring 21 points and adding seven rebounds and eight assists. Even more impressive, as the only player to stay in the game for all 50 minutes, Smith turned the ball over just once.

"The coaches told me to attack," said Smith. "They've told me to attack since we went to Texas and I think that's improved my game, not playing on my heels a lot. I think I played a great game but that doesn't matter because we didn't get the win."
