HILADELPHIA - The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team will try Saturday to extend its success without senior point guard Anthony Anderson while ending its stretch of Philadelphia futility. Anderson, who missed Tuesday's 78-68 win over Florida State with a back injury, didn't make the trip for the game at La Salle. UMass (13-9, 6-5 Atlantic 10) will try to go 5-0 without him this season and Artie Bowers again will start in his place at 2 p.m. Saturday.
''I think everybody knows what they need to do without him,'' UMass coach Steve Lappas said.
The Minutemen haven't won a regular-season game in Philadelphia in the past four years. Lappas, who coached at Villanova for nine years before moving to UMass in 2001, is 0-8 against Big Five opponents in Philly and 3-12 against them overall.
The game's subplot features a battle between two of the conference's top two big men in Steven Smith of La Salle and Minuteman Rashaun Freeman.
Both were named Friday to all-district second teams by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, Freeman in District 1 and Smith in District 3.
''Right now offensively I'd say those two are the best,'' Lappas said. ''Smith is an inside-outside guy. He's a tremendous 15-feet-and-in player, but he's made a number of threes this year too. He's expanded his game and he's definitely a guy you have to be aware of all the time.''
If not for the Explorers' 8-15 record (4-8 A-10), Smith might be a leading candidate for Atlantic 10 player of the year with averages of 21.7 points and 8.7 rebounds.
''He's a first-team A-10 type of player. I always look forward to going against guys like that,'' said Freeman. ''He can hit the 15-footer and he can also hit the three. He can do a combination of things.''
Smith and Freeman likely won't tangle much. The Explorers play zone defenses almost exclusively, in several varieties. When UMass goes man-to-man Stephane Lasme probably will guard Smith, but more likely the Minutemen will use their own collection of double teams and junk defenses against him.
''We're going to do some different things. He's probably going to see some sort of double team from different directions,'' Lappas said.
Smith was supposed to be part of a promising season for the Explorers, but their roster was gutted when three players - high-scoring guards Gary Neal and Mike Cleaves as well as reserve Dzaflo Larkai - were dismissed from school after being charged with rape during the summer. Coach Billy Hahn resigned as a result of the scandal.
The Explorers lost six of their first seven games and later their first six A-10 games.
But they have improved lately. They won back-to-back games over Fordham and Richmond on Feb. 6 and 9 before falling to Dayton Saturday. La Salle bounced back to beat Rhode Island 73-63 Tuesday. The recent success has coincided with the improvement of freshman Darnell Harris. He's raised his scoring average to 11.3.
''They're playing great in the last two weeks,'' Lappas said. ''With Harris joining the mix, it makes them much more dangerous.''

uring the pregame shoot-around prior to the University of Massachusetts' game at Rhode Island Feb. 9, several players appeared to be attempting the same shot. Standing at the top of the key, they each took a hard jab-step toward the basket to fool an imaginary defender and then jumped back to attempt a 3-pointer.
Nearby, Maurice Maxwell smiled. He already had made that shot just over a year earlier. His teammates were imitating his drive-fake 3-pointer that gave the Minutemen a 65-62 lead in their win over the Rams last season.
Imitating Maxwell is a good idea these days. The Minuteman sophomore swingman has emerged as one of the team's most reliable and versatile players and has become one of the better guards in the Atlantic 10.
His 11.9 points per game are the second most on the team, while his 82 assists and 41 steals both lead the Minutemen. Maxwell has scored in double figures in eight of the Minutemen's last nine games and has held or shared the scoring lead in four of the last six.
But Maxwell has begun to lead the Minutemen off the stat sheet as well. Despite being just a sophomore, he's become a vocal presence on the squad.
''I think the guys respect him for sure,'' UMass coach Steve Lappas said. ''I think the first step is trying to figure out the game at this level for yourself and what you need to do to be good. Then you start figuring out what team needs to be good. Then you start being able to give of yourself to be more of a leader to help other guys. He's already getting to stage three.''
Saturday's game at 2 p.m. against La Salle is a homecoming for Maxwell, who starred at Lutheran Christian Academy in Philadelphia. He was unquestionably the leader on that squad, but backed off from the role as a rookie at UMass a year ago. Maxwell still defers to senior captain Anthony Anderson, but he's begun to assume more of a vocal presence.
''I think it might just be my personality taking over situations sometimes or giving my input or knowing how to talk to people a certain way,'' Maxwell said. ''For some reason people believe what I'm saying. I didn't notice how much guys listened to me, until Coach (Andrew) Theokas told me.''
Maxwell said he tries to focus on what instruction the coaching staff is giving other players as well.
''I understand my role better now,'' he said. ''I think I have to know other people's strengths and weaknesses so I can help them and put them in situations where they can be successful out there.''
Lappas trusts the advice Maxwell is dispensing.
''I think he's got a pretty good understanding of what we try to do,'' Lappas said. ''He's mirroring and echoing the things we talk about all the time.''

HILADELPHIA - UMass improves to 4-0 this season in overtime games and secure a .500 season for the first time since 1999-00 as the Minutemen defeated La Salle 69-66 in Philadelphia. Maurice Maxwell (Philadephia, Pa.) scored 17 points to lead Massachusetts and the UMass defense held La Salle's Steve Smith, the league's leading scorer, to just 12 points on 2-of-11 shooting.
In the overtime period, sophomore Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.) scored the first four points and sophomore Jeff Viggiano (Suffield, Conn.) canned five of six free throws in the wanning moments of the game as UMass (14-9, 7-4 A-10) held on for the win.
The win ties the Minutemen with the Final Four advancing 1995-96 team as the only two squads to go 4-0 in overtime games. The 1997-98 team played the most overtime games posting a 3-2 record.
The win also snapped a two-game win streak for La Salle in the series and was the first UMass win in Philadelphia since Jan. 25, 2000 (62-58).
The Minutemen never trailed in the overtime period and were only tied once. Senior Chris Chadwick's (Union, N.J.) only basket of the game gave UMass a four-point lead, 64-60, before Viggiano hit five straight free throws. Freeman hit scored twice in the paint - part of his 16 points - to get UMass rolling in the fourth overtime game of the season.
Maxwell and sophomore Stephane Lasme (Libreville, Gabon) were huge for the Minutemen who advanced to 9-1 this season in games determined by five points or less. Maxwell netted a team-high 17 points, while Lasme tied his career-high with 13 boards adding eight points and four big blocked shots.
Lasme also drew the charge of defending Steven Smith - the league's leading scorer at 21.0 points per game. Lasme held Smith to just 2-of-11 shooting for 12 total points and forced four turnovers. Smith did go 8-for-9 from the charity stripe leading the Explorers who connected on 14-of-15 free throws in the game.
UMass, guided in part by Lasme, controlled the glass 42-31 which ties as the second-best rebounding margin of the season (+13 vs. Yale, +11 vs. Rider, +11 vs. St. Bonaventure).
It was a good start for the Minutemen as they hit 13-for-27 first half field goals (48.1 percent) to take a 32-24 halftime lead. A 9-0 run and a 9-2 run in the period, each capped by three-pointers from Maxwell and Viggiano respectively, put UMass up by as many as 14 points (26-12) with 8:32 to play.
After a 30-second timeout following Viggiano's three, the Explorers whittled the lead to just six points (30-24) as Darnell Harris canned a pair of treys and Tabby Cunningham hit a jumper in the paint and a lay-up in transition with 2:18 in the half.
Lasme converted a lay-up in the paint with 1:42 to go, part of 15 second-chance points for UMass in the half, to give the halftime score.
La Salle (8-16, 4-9 A-10) exploded in the first five minutes of the second half going on an 18-to-5 run to take a 52-37 lead with 14:48 to play. The Explorers hit four of their 10 three-pointers in the game during that stretch including the second for Harris who matched Maxwell's four.
The Minutemen made a run of their own late in the period and Maxwell's fourth trey of the game gave UMass a 56-55 lead with 2:21 to go. Freeman hit a lay-up on the next possession to push the lead to three points, 58-55.
Using another 30-second timeout, La Salle set-up Jermaine Thomas for a three-pointer which he nailed with 59 seconds to play to tie the game at 58 each.
Chadwick miss a jumper for UMass and Cunningham's three-pointer as time expired fell short to force the overtime.
UMass took control early of the bonus period as Freeman scored the first four points and Viggiano tallied the last five consecutive. The Minutemen never trailed in OT and were only tied once 60-60 on a Mike St. John tip-in - the only La Salle field goal of the frame.
Thomas had the opportunity to tie the game again, but forced up a contested three-pointer which fell off mark.
Along with Maxwell and Freeman, sophomore Art Bowers (Wilmington, Del.) and Viggiano added 10 points to lead the UMass charge. Chadwick scored four points, including his only field goal of the game in overtime, and dished out four assists.
Harris and Thomas each scored 18 points to lead La Salle, but Smith was held in check by Lasme to just 12 points - eight on free throws. St. John led the Explorers on the glass with 13 rebounds.
Massachusetts returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 23 when the Minutemen host A-10 rival Rhode Island with a 7:00 p.m. tip-off. The game will be televised in Rhode Island only on the Cox 3 Cable Network. Wednesday's game is 'Red Sox Appreciation Day' as the World Series Trophy will be on hand in the Mullins Center. One lucky fan wearing Boston Red Sox apparel will win the opportunity to take their picture at halftime with the trophy.
Mass is now five games over .500 for the first time since the end of the 1997-98 season when they finished 21-11.
UMass has also secured an above .500 mark in the regular-season for the first time since the 1999-2000 season when they headed into the A-10 Tournament with a 15-14 record.
UMass' 14th win is the most in a single-season under Steve Lappas in his four years in Amherst. The 2000-01 team went 15-15 prior to his arrival. UMass also won its seventh conference game, its best A-10 record in four years under Lappas.
UMass is now 10-4 all-time vs. LaSalle and breaks a two-game losing streak to the Explorers, last winning in 2002.
UMass won its fourth OT game of the season to tie the school record for OT wins in a season, the 1995-96 team also went 4-0 in extra-session games.
UMass played its fourth overtime game of the season, one short of the school record of five set in 1997-98.
UMass is 9-1 this season in games decided by five or fewer points.
UMass dominated the glass all game, after just 24 rebounds vs. Florida State in their last game, UMass had 22 rebounds in the first half as they finished the game with 42 rebounds. In the first half, Stephane Lasme had as many rebounds as the entire LaSalle team, eight.
Led by Stephane Lasme, UMass' defense on the A-10's top scorer Steven Smith was tremendous all game. Smith, who came into the averaging 21.0 points per game, had just four free throws in the first half, going 0-for-3 from the field. Smith finished with 12 points and shot just 2-of-11 from the floor.
Lasme tied his career-high with 13 rebounds, his third double-figure rebound game of the season and fourth of his career.
Philadelphia native Maurice Maxwell reached double-figures for the ninth time in the last 10 games and 10 time in the last 12 games with a team-high 17. Maxwell had 11 points in the game's first 7:46.
Maxwell had UMass' first four-point play in more than a year as he canned a trey and added the free throw with 12:14 left in the first half - that put him into double-figures.
Rashaun Freeman reached double-figures for the 41st time in 52 career games and 17th time in 23 games this season with 16.
Freshman Jeff Salovski made his first-career start for UMass in place of Rashaun Freeman, who came off the bench for the second time this season. Salovski had four points.
Art Bowers was also in the starting line-up for the second straight game with Anthony Anderson out because of a back injury. He finished with 10 points, his second straight game in double-figures and seventh time this season. He now has 19 career games with 10 or more points.
UMass is now 5-0 when Anthony Anderson is not in the line-up winning three games back in December.
Senior Anthony Anderson did not make the trip to Philadelphia due to a sore back.
Other Notes: UMass won the tap ... Maurice Maxwell hit a jumper 18 seconds in for the game's first points ... Freeman, Lawrence Carrier and Jeff Viggiano were UMass' first subs at 12:55 of the first ... Stephane Lasme had two first=half dunks... UMass held the A-10's leading scorer Steven Smith to just four points in the first half - all free throws - as he was 0-for-3 from the floor ... UMass led by as many as 14 in the first half at 26-12 with 8:28 left in the half ...
On La Salle Stretching The Game
We couldn't take any time off the clock because they had so many fouls to give. We just did a good job of executing our screens on the in-bound plays and I was able to convert the free throws.
On Going To OVertime
We knew La Salle was going to make a run in the game. We're an experienced team now in overtime, so we weren't worried when we got down and time was short.
Head Coach Steve Lappas
We've played well in overtime all season. Maurice Maxwell hit a big three when we were down with just under six minutes left. Our zone was not working well today, but i thought we stepped up well playing man-to-man. I knew it was going to be a tough game today I was worried about our zone. All year it has been good against three-point shooting, but for whatever reason, not so today. I thought we got great shots, but we had a tough time getting them to drop.
On Play of Stephane Lasme
Lasme did a great job on Smith holding him just 2-for-11 and he added 13 rebounds so an all around good game for Stephane.
On Overtime Strategy
We feel that if we get the ball inside to Rashaun Freeman, we can put the pressure on teams and that worked for us in overtime today. We can't forget the shooting of Viggiano at the line either. I'm happy for our guys and they are starting to see the program blossoming. I said guys 'this is our thing' when we went to overtime.
or a city who's moniker is the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia has shown very little amore to UMass coach Steve Lappas in his four years since leaving Villanova to become head coach at the University of Massachusetts.
In eight regular season trips to Philadelphia since taking the helm of the Minutemen, Lappas and UMass have a perfectly imperfect record of 0 and 8. In fact, the only time coach Lappas has won in Philly since his departure was when the Minutemen defeated George Washington in the first round of the 2001-02 Atlantic 10 tournament. They then proceeded to lose a heartbreaker in overtime to number 24 Xavier and future Player of the Year David West. Maybe the losing streak should be called the Curse of the Massimino.
If ever were Lappas to reverse the regular-season losing streak, it was going to be today, when the Minutemen faced a young LaSalle team at Tom Gola Arena. The Explorers, who were left reeling following an off-season rape scandal that resulted in the departure of coach Billy Hahn and 2003-04 team-leading scorer Gary Neal, came into the game fifth in the Atlantic 10 West with a 4 and 8 mark (8 and 15 overall).
On the other hand, the Minutemen came into the game having won 6 of their previous 9 games, including a 78 to 68 victory over ACC foe Florida State on Tuesday night that improved their record to 13 and 9 on the season.
UMass dominated early behind strong rebounding and the hot hand of Maurice Maxwell, who scored 11 of the Minutemen's first 17 points while jumping out to a 17 to 8 lead. When Jeff Viggiano hit a 3-pointer to put the Minutemen up 26 to 12, it appeared UMass was going to coast to victory. Despite 10 first-half turnovers, the Minutemen, primarily behind a dominating 22 to 8 rebounding margin (including 8 by Stephan Lasme), went into the locker room with a 32 to 24 lead.
Instead of putting the game away, the Minutemen got sloppy. After a bucket by Stephan Lasme gave UMass its biggest lead of the game at 10 points (34 to 24), LaSalle went on an 18 to 3 run to take a 5-point lead (42 to 37). The run allowed the sparse and previously dormant LaSalle crowd into the game for the first time of the afternoon. A pair of timely 3-pointers by Maurice Maxwell and Art Bowers quickly quieted the crowd back down, but the damage had already been done and the Minutemen found themselves in a dogfight.
The Explorers had one more run in them and scored 13 of the next 19 points behind five points from guard Jermaine Thomas and four from Stephen Smith. Smith, who came into the game leading the A-10 in scoring with 21.0 points per game, was virtually handcuffed by the UMass defense, shooting 2 for 11 from the field while being held to 12 points. Facing their largest deficit of the game at 49 to 43 with 5:31 remaining, the small but anxious UMass contingent began to worry that Lappas' winless streak in Philly would continue. But the heretofore quiet Rayshaun Freeman, who was disciplined for allegedly being late to the team bus and was not in the starting lineup, took over late, scoring 6 of UMass' last 9 points, the last two of which gave the Minutemen a 58 to 55 lead. The Minutemen's hopes at getting out of town with a win in regulation were dashed when Jermaine Thomas (who along with freshman guard Darnell Harris led all scorers with 18 points apiece) drilled a 3-pointer with just under a minute remaining to tie the game at 58 and send the game into overtime.
Overtime seemed to favor the Minutemen, who had won all three previous tilts that went beyond regulation this season. Just as in regulation, Freeman stayed hot, scoring the Minutemen's first 4 points of the extra session to give UMass a 62 to 60 lead. After a basket by Chris Chadwick gave UMass a four-point lead with 52 seconds remaining, the game was turned into a foul-shooting contest. With 38 seconds remaining and LaSalle facing a 64 to 62 deficit, Explorers coach John Giannini, whose team had committed 3 second half and overtime fouls to this point, ordered his team to begin fouling immediately. And foul they did. The Explorers were called for four fouls in four seconds, the last of which sent Jeff Viggiano to the line. Not only did Viggiano hit both free throws, he hit three more consecutive foul shots as LaSalle kept sending the 6'6” junior to the line, the last of which game UMass a three point edge, before missing his final attempt of the game.
With the 69 to 66 win, not only did coach Lappas and the Minutemen finally get the Philadelphia monkey off their back, they also won their fourth overtime game of the season, tying the 1995-96 Final Four team for the most overtime victories in a single season. With their record now 14 and 9 (7 and 5 in the A-10), the Minutemen are now five games over .500 for the first time since the 1999-2000 season. The fourteen wins are also the most of the Lappas era, surpassing the thirteen victories in Lappas' inaugural season of 2001-02.
With four regular season games remaining, including a home matchup at the Mullins Center versus Rhode Island on Wednesday night, the Minutemen could gain some really serious momentum heading into the A-10 tournament. Then again, the Curse of the Massimino could rear its ugly head again as UMass returns to Philly next weekend for a pivotal matchup with long-time foe Temple.
HILADELPHIA - University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Steve Lappas acknowledged the fortune involved in his team winning four overtime games this season, including a 69-66 victory over La Salle Saturday.
"We can't take credit for being geniuses every time we win a close game," Lappas said. ''Sometimes you do get lucky. There is some bounce of the ball involved.'' Whether it was luck or keen anticipation that led to Chris Chadwick's only basket in overtime, it gave the Minutemen control against La Salle. With UMass leading 62-60, Artie Bowers missed from 3-point range and the Explorers effectively boxed out the Minutemen big men. But nobody released to get the ball, which caromed toward the lane. Chadwick, who had started to backpedal on defense, alertly changed direction and raced into the lane.
He grabbed the ball and put it back in with 50.8 seconds left.
''That was a big play,'' Lappas said. ''He was there and the ball came to him.''
The four-point lead gave UMass momentum in overtime and forced La Salle to foul every time the Minutemen got the ball for the rest of the game. Jeff Viggiano made five of six free throws in the last 32.1 seconds to keep the Explorers at bay.
''It felt good,'' Viggiano said. ''I was in a rhythm. I wasn't really thinking, I was just shooting.''
Viggiano's one miss allowed La Salle a game-tying attempt. But Jermaine Thomas' 3-point try wasn't close and UMass escaped.
The Minutemen improved to 14-9 (7-5 Atlantic 10) and are assured of their first season of .500 or better since 2000-01. UMass moved five games over .500 for the first time since the 1997-98 season.
The Minutemen will host Rhode Island at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
''I'm happy for these guys,'' Lappas said. ''We talked when we recruited these guys about what we're going to do. I think they see it coming. We're certainly not there yet, but they see something starting.''
''We came off a good win and we got another one,'' Rashaun Freeman said. ''In our past we've gone back a little. We took a step. We have to take more steps.''
The anticipated high-scoring battle between big men Freeman and Steven Smith didn't materialize as expected. Freeman started slowly in the first half, coming off the bench after arriving a few minutes late for a team meeting. He had four points in just 10 first-half minutes, but broke free in the second half and overtime to finish with 16 points and seven rebounds.
Smith struggled against the UMass zone and Stephane Lasme when the Minutemen switched to man-to-man. Smith shot just 2-for-11 (8-for-9 from the free-throw line) and turned the ball over four time. His 12 points were nine below his season average.
''What Stephane Lasme did defensively was a significant part of that game,'' Lappas said. ''The job he did on a great player was an incredible defensive job.''
Lasme had four blocks and his 13 boards matched his career high. UMass outrebounded La Salle 42-31 and had 15 offensive rebounds compared to 17 defensive boards by the Explorers.
''Every time they took a shot, it was a 50-50 ball,'' La Salle coach John Giannini said. ''We do not have the size to rebound against the personnel we have to face in this league. If we get a couple more rebounds we win some of these games.''
Maurice Maxwell led the Minutemen with 17 points, while Jeff Viggiano and Bowers each added 10. Darnell Harris and Thomas each had 18 for the Explorers (8-16, 4-9 A-10).
UMass led by as many as 14 points in the first half and 32-24 at intermission. After Lasme scored the first basket of the second half to put the Minutemen ahead by 10, the Explorers scored eight straight points to make it 34-34 with 18:30 left, resulting in Lappas calling time-out.
Bowers hit a 3-pointer to stop that run, but the Explorers used an athletic putback by Mike St. John, a 3-pointer by Thomas and five points by Harris for a 10-0 surge that gave them a 42-37 advantage. They carried that momentum deep into the second half when Thomas' 3-pointer put them ahead 55-49 with 5:30 to go.
After a UMass time-out, Freeman took over. He scored six points in a 9-0 run that gave the Minutemen a 58-55 lead with 1:45 left. Thomas tied the game with just under a minute left. Neither team scored in the final 58 seconds to set up the overtime.

HILADELPHIA - The 69-66 overtime win by the University of Massachusetts over La Salle Saturday ensured the Minutemen a winning regular-season record and eligibility for the National Invitation Tournament and allowed them to keep pace in the Atlantic 10 East race. At 7-5 in conference play, UMass is two games behind Temple (9-3) and a half game ahead of Fordham (7-6) in the eastern conference. The Minutemen can extend their lead over the Rams to a full game Wednesday if they beat Rhode Island while Fordham is idle.
That would appear critical as Fordham has a relatively easy slate left with games against lowly Duquesne and Saint Bonaventure as well as one with Saint Joseph's.
UMass will be rooting for the Hawks Tuesday when they face Temple. If the Owls lose, the Minutemen could move into a second place tie with Temple with a win in the team's head-to-head meeting at 2 p.m. Saturday.
In addition to this week's games, Temple faces Rhode Island and La Salle.
EXTRA-MINUTEMEN - UMass became only the fourth team in school history to play four overtimes in a season. The 1984-85 and 1995-96 teams each played four, while the 1997-98 squad played five.
DELI STARTS - Minuteman rookie big man Jeff ''Big Deli'' Salovski made his first career start in place of junior big man Rashaun Freeman, who was late for a team meeting and didn't start.
Freeman scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds in 29 minutes. Salovski had four points in 11 minutes.
UMass is now 2-0 when Freeman doesn't start. The Minutemen defeated Davidson 70-67 Dec. 19 with Freeman out for a similar infraction. He is averaging 15.0 points per game in games that he doesn't start.
It was the Minutemen's eighth different lineup this season. Of the active scholarship players, only Lawrence Carrier hasn't started a game.
KING OF THE ROAD - Sophomore Maurice Maxwell continued to have more success scoring away from the Mullins Center than in it. He is averaging 13.6 points in eight road games compared to 11.2 at home.
Maxwell had his best collegiate game in Philadelphia, where he starred for Lutheran Christian Academy, whose practice gym is a short walk from Tom Gola Arena. He is now averaging 11 points per game in his hometown.
''I want to beat everybody else on our schedule,'' said Maxwell, who had several friends and family in attendance. ''But it did make it a little sweeter that it was here.''
NEXT UP - The Minutemen return to action at 7 p.m. Wednesday when they host Rhode Island at the Mullins Center. UMass defeated the Rams 49-44 on Feb. 9. The Minutemen haven't swept the Rams since 2001. Rhody enters that game at 4-19 (2-10 A-10) after Sunday's 56-54 loss to Fordham.
MISCELLANEOUS - Maxwell's first-half four-point play was the first since Jeff Viggiano had one on Jan. 28, 2004.
Since the Explorers joined the league, UMass is (8-3) against them, (4-2) in Philadelphia including one A-10 Tournament game and (2-2) in Tom Gola Arena.
Congressman Richard Neal, D-Springfield, was in attendance. His son Sean is a sophomore guard for the Explorers.

HILADELPHIA - The Massachusetts men's basketball program has not had a winning season in five years and have not been five games over .500 in eight years. But now, as the culmination of an up-and-down, emotional season grows closer, that has all changed.
Head coach Steve Lappas' Minutemen are officially winners in 2005.
The Maroon and White downed LaSalle 69-66 in overtime before 2,315 at the Tom Gola Arena on Saturday, and the victory guarantees that UMass (14-9 7-5 Atlantic 10) will finish 2004-05 with a winning record for the first time since the 1999-00 campaign.
The Minutemen are now officially qualified for the National Invitation Tournament, and move to five games above .500 for the first time since 1997-98.
UMass returns to action on Wednesday night when Rhode Island will visit the Mullins Center for a 7 p.m. tip-off. The World Series trophy will be on hand as part of Red Sox Fan Appreciation Night.
"The biggest thing for me is, I'm happy for these guys," Lappas said. "We talked when we recruited these kids about what we're going to do, and I think they see it coming. It's certainly not there yet, but they see something starting."
Maurice Maxwell, who is from Philadelphia and attended high school near LaSalle, paced UMass with 17 points in another solid effort for the sophomore swingman.
Leading scorer Rashaun Freeman did not start for the Minutemen after being late for a team meeting, but still managed to post 16 points and seven rebounds in 29 minutes. Jeff Salovski earned his first career start in place of Freeman.
"Ray didn't start because he was a couple minutes late for a meeting." Lappas said. "It's important for these kids to know what we want to do here, and that's all it was. It wasn't a big deal."
Senior captain Anthony Anderson did not make the trip with the team, and remains out indefinitely with a back injury.
Stephane Lasme sparked the Minutemen defensively with 13 rebounds and four blocks, while holding LaSalle star Steven Smith, the A-10's leading scorer, to 12 points on 2 of 11 shooting.
"What [Lasme] did defensively in that game was a significant part of the difference," Lappas said. " The job Lasme did on a great player was an incredible defensive job."
Guards Jermaine Thomas and Darnell Harris led all scorers with 18 points apiece for the Explorers..
UMass and LaSalle (8-16 4-9 A-10) battled evenly over the first four minutes of overtime. After UMass grabbed a slim four-point edge, the game then turned into a battle of free throw shooting, and no one stepped up bigger for UMass than Jeff Viggiano.
Making three consecutive trips to the foul line with his team up by two over the final 32 seconds, the Suffield, Conn. native buried 5 of 6 from the foul line to keep the Minutemen out in front and secure the win in the end.
"I started getting in a rhythm towards the end of the game at the line," Viggiano said. "I just wanted to be the guy taking [the foul shots] and I was able to make them."
The Minutemen got six points from Freeman and a trey from Maxwell as part of a 9-0 run late in the second half and took the lead at 58-55 with 1:45 left.
Thomas tied the game on the next LaSalle possession with a three of his own, and each team had a shot to take the lead or win in the waning moment but could not convert.
"Our last three home losses have just been like this - heartbreaking," Explorers coach John Giannini said. "We played very poorly in the first half, and our guys played extremely hard in the second half and overtime."
After UMass took a 32-24 lead into halftime, LaSalle came out firing to begin the second half. The Explorers put together an 18-5 run to take a 42-37 lead with just under 15 minutes left in regulation.
