he University of Massachusetts men's basketball team will try to maintain its tenuous grip on third place in the Atlantic 10 East tonight in a building where it's hard to win as a road team.
The Minutemen (15-10, 8-6 A-10) and Fordham (12-13, 8-6) are tied for third place in the A-10 East, but the Rams have the tie-breaker edge with a better division record. UMass needs to move ahead of the Rams in the final two games to finish in third.
UMass starts that task at 7 tonight at Dayton, one of two A-10 teams that Steve Lappas has never beaten in his four seasons coaching the Minutemen. Saint Joseph's is the other.
Lappas said the Minutemen want to finish third in the division, but that their placement would not affect their chances in the Atlantic 10 Tournament next week.
''You always want to come in higher. It's much better to finish in third than in fourth,'' he said. ''What does it do in terms of the tournament? I don't think it does a whole lot.''
The Dayton teams that Lappas' Minutemen struggled against were configured much differently than the current edition of the Flyers.
From Ryan Perryman to Mark Ashman to Keith Waleskowski, Dayton has featured at least one All-Conference big man in five of the last seven seasons.
''We played against those same kids for a couple of years and now they have really a whole new team,'' Lappas said. ''They're very perimeter- and 3-point-shooting-oriented.''
Monty Scott is the only Flyer scoring in double figures, averaging 11.6 points per game. But five other Dayton players are averaging more than 6.5 points per game.
''You almost have to prepare for this team like everyone is the same,'' Lappas said. ''They all can shoot threes. They all can slash. Nobody is really big and physical. We're preparing for 10 or 11 guys.''
While the Flyers' roster is different, the results have been similar to their past success. At 16-9 (9-5 A-10) Dayton could still extend its run of 20-win seasons to six years and is a likely lock to advance to the postseason for the sixth straight year.
Dayton coach Brian Gregory said his team has improved over the season. ''Defensively we've become a pretty good team,'' he said. ''We've held our own on the boards which was of grave concern to me at the beginning of the year.''
He said the Minutemen have improved too.
''In terms of talent, athletic ability and size, UMass has proved they can beat just about anybody,'' Gregory said. ''I'm so impressed with (Maurice) Maxwell and his ability to create from the two-guard, three-man spot. Obviously (Rashaun) Freeman is a tough matchup for everybody in this league.''
While injured forwards Jeff Viggiano and Lawrence Carrier are healthy enough to play tonight, Minuteman senior point guard Anthony Anderson's balky back is acting up again.
''Anthony is day to day. He has not practiced'' on Monday, Lappas said. ''He had a setback. It did not respond well after the game. It was really hurting him a lot. I'm planning on going without him, but he definitely could play.''

AYTON, Ohio - Despite a boost from freshman Lawrence Carrier who tied his career-high with 11 points off the bench, UMass fell 53-52 to Dayton on Tuesday night. In a game that came down to the wire, the Flyers converted a pair of free throws with 3.5 seconds to play to escape with the win.
With just under two minutes to play, sophomore Rashaun Freeman hit the front-end of a pair of free throws and converted a tip-in off a Chadwick miss on the same possession to tie the game at 48 each.
Dayton's Jimmy Binnie hit his biggest shot of the game on the ensuing Flyer possession as he drilled a three-pointer with the shot clock expiring and sophomore Stephane Lasme drapped all over him.
That shot was the ninth three-pointer for Dayton in the game and gave the Flyers a 51-58 lead.
The Minutemen took the lead with just over four seconds remaining as Freeman was able steal the ball from Brian Roberts and find a streaking Maurice Maxwell who threw down a fastbreak dunk to take a 52-51 lead.
Freeman then was called for the foul, his fifth, and Warren Williams hit both free throws as UMass was over the limit.
UMass got the ball up the court with 3.5 seconds on the clock, but his heave as the buzzer sounded fell just short and Dayton held on for the win.
The loss drops UMass to 10-2 in games decided by six points or fewer.
Carrier and Freeman led the Minutemen with 11 points each. Maxwell added 10 in the loss. Lasme and Carrier paced UMass on the boards pulling down nine and eight, respectively. Carrier's rebounding effort marked a career-high for him.
Dayton was led by Monty Scott who led all players with 15 points. Brian Roberts and Jimmy Binnie each came off the bench to score 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Shooting was nearly even for the game as UMass hit 18-of-45 field goals (40 percent) and Dayton hit 20-of-48 (42 percent). UMass held the edge in free throws converting 11-of-18.
The biggest difference was behind the arc where Dayton hit 9-of-18 deep shots compared to just 5-of-13 for the Minutemen.
UMass will return to action this Saturday when they host Duquesne in the Mullins Center at 2:00 p.m.
AYTON, Ohio - Dayton guard Warren Williams stood on the line in front of the quietest 12,488 fans in the state of Ohio last night and sent them all home happy one last time during the 2004-05 season.
Williams hit two free throws with 3.5 seconds left, giving the Flyers (17-9 10-5 Atlantic 10) a 53-52 edge over the Massachusetts men's basketball team. Chadwick broke through Dayton's half-court defense on the next possesion and put up an off-balance lay-up, which rimmed out as time expired, giving the Flyers a win in their last home game of the year.
The Minutemen will return to action Saturday night for their last regular season game of the year. UMass will face A-10 rival Duquesne at the Mullins Center for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
UMass (15-11 8-7 A-10) forward Rashaun Freeman stole the ball with 10 seconds left in the game and connected with Maurice Maxwell down the court for a dunk, putting the Minutemen ahead 52-51.
On the next possession, Williams cut into the baseline and got trapped a foot outside the paint. Within seconds, Freeman was called for his fifth foul on a questionable whistle by the baseline referee. Freeman took a seat with 11 points and five rebounds, and watched as his team dropped its second road game in a row.
UMass coach Steve Lappas was not pleased with the final call of the game, and felt as if it was a mistake by Williams rather than a foul on his star big man.
"The kid was stuck on the baseline with nowhere to go and they called a foul." Lappas said. "We're frustrated right now because there's no doubt in my mind that that kid (Williams) was stuck on the baseline. It was not a call, he got bailed out on that play."
The Minutemen forced five ties in the second half, with their most important coming with 1:33 left in the game. Freeman went to the line to shoot two, made the first, but knocked the second one off the side of the rim.
Chadwick got the offensive rebound and dished the ball to Freeman who dropped in the lay-up, leaving the score tied at 48.
Lappas was pleased with his team's tenacity even in the losing effort.
"I thought we played very hard tonight." Lappas said. "I thought we played great and gave a tremendous effort, and I think that shows how far we have come."
It was Senior Day at Dayton, which is graduating only one player, guard Mark Jones. Jones had two points and two assists on the evening for the Flyers.
The Flyers were led by Monty Scott, who had 15 points and seven rebounds on the night. Second for Dayton was Jimmy Binnie who had 10 points, including a 3-pointer with 1:02 left in the game, which put the Flyers up 51-48.
The Minutemen went on a bit of a run and tied the game up with nearly four minutes remaining after Freeman hit back-to-back lay-ups to even the game at 44. Dayton's junior forward didn't let the run last long as he hit a jumper after a Flyer timeout to give Dayton a 46-44 lead.
Roberts hit two threes, and Jones scored his only bucket of the game to put Dayton ahead 40-39 with nine minutes left in the half. Matters only got worse for the Minutemen as Freeman picked up his fourth foul 15 second later with an offensive foul.
Lawerence Carrier, who had 11 points and eight rebounds on the game, received his fourth only three possessions earlier.
UMass maintained a slim five-point lead through the first five minutes of the second half. Carrier started with the hot hand and scored four of the Minutmen's first nine points on long jumpers. Dayton's Scott soon broke the momentum. after throwing down a two-fisted dunk to set the score at 34-29.
Scott wasn't done as he came down the court on the ensuing possession and nailed his third three of the game, bringing he score within two points.
Hurting the Minutemen's offense was the lack of their senior captain, Anthony Anderson. Anderson did not make the trip as his back is still ailing him. Lappas is not confident in his return for the rest of the season and was quick to mention that he may be done.
"He's probably done for the season." Lappas said. "There's a good chance, but it's not 100 percent yet."
The Flyers jumped out to a 13-6 lead early in the first half off a three pointer from Roberts. Dayton hit four threes during the run, including Roberts' shot from the top-right corner of the arch.
The Minutemen would battle back and bring the game to within a basket with eight minutes left in the half, riding the three-point shooting of Maxwell and Carrier, who hit two in a row putting the score at 16-14. UMass tied the game at 18 a minute later off a Freeman lay-up.
The lead would change three times in the last five minutes and neither team could find a good rhythm going into the half. Both teams scored a combined six points in over the last five minutes.
The Maroon and White went into the locker room with a 25-22 lead after Chris Chadwick netted the final four points in the half with two free throws and a behind-the-head lay-up.
UMass had seven players on the board going into the break with Carrier leading the way, netting seven points while grabbing six rebounds. Sophomore forward Staphane Lasme was also big on the boards with five in the half, including two steals and three points.
AYTON - Perhaps the basketball Gods felt sorry for the University of Dayton Flyers. Perhaps they thought the Flyers had one coming after George Washington beat them with a miracle shot on Saturday.
Whatever the reason, the Flyers caught a huge break with 3.5 seconds remaining in their game with Massachusetts Tuesday night, enabling Warren Williams to sink two free throws for a welcomed 53-52 Dayton victory.
This was shortly after 12,488 spectators thought they might be witnessing a re-run of the GW finish.
With Dayton in possession of the ball and nursing a 51-50 lead with approximately 12 seconds left, UD's Brian Roberts tried to drive to the basket as the shot clock was running out. He had the ball stolen by Rashaun Freeman of Massachusetts at exactly the spot where GW's Carl Elliott intercepted Monty Scott's pass on Saturday. Freeman fired the ball ahead to Maurice Maxwell, who dunked it for a 52-51 lead with nine seconds left.
The Flyers hurried up the floor, and the 6-foot-1 Williams dribbled to the baseline, where he was met by the 6-9, 255-pound Freeman. An official called a foul on Freeman, putting Williams on the line.
Massachusetts Coach Steve Lappas was furious.
"The kid was stuck on the baseline with nowhere to go, and got bailed out," Lappas said. "He was stuck there. He got bailed out for no reason. Let the kids decide the game."
Williams said Freeman hit his hand, adding "It wasn't anything big, but I'll take it."
UD Coach Brian Gregory allowed that Dayton was fortunate to get the call in that situation.
"To quote (Saint Joseph's Coach) Phil Martelli," Gregory said, "it was a Final Four call."
Williams, a 75 percent free throw shooter, swished the first of his two attempts and bounced in the second one to put Dayton ahead, 53-52.
After a Dayton time-out, Massachusetts' 6-11, 325-pound Jeff Salovski prepared for the pass-in, and his four teammates lined up across the mid-court line. Salovski fired a perfect pass to Chris Chadwick, who lost the ball momentarily, recovered it and dribbled toward the basket with Williams guarding him. Chadwick chucked a running 10-foot hook shot that nearly went in as the buzzer sounded.
Williams said he feared that UD might get stung again.
"It was a tough shot," he said, "but the last one (by GW's Elliott) was a tough shot, too."

Williams wasn't the only hero for the Flyers on Tuesday. With the score tied at 48 and the shot clock under five seconds, UMass again prevented Roberts from penetrating its perimeter and he had to pass the ball to Jimmy Binnie on the left sideline.
"Everybody was screaming that the shot clock was running down so I knew I had to get rid of it," Binnie said. "I didn't even see the shot clock. I knew Monty was in the corner and a guy was playing between both of us, so I just let it fly."
Binnie's hurried 3-point cast rattled into the basket as the shot clock expired.
"I didn't see the shot go in," Binnie said. "A kid kinda ran over me and I fell. I just knew by the crowd's reaction that it had gone in."
It was the second time during the game that Binnie bailed out the Flyers by scoring with the shot clock ready to buzz.
AYTON, Ohio - It didn't sink in until the final buzzer sounded.
''I really didn't think we were going to lose until I heard the buzzer,'' UMass senior guard Chris Chadwick said. ''I thought we could win it.'' The crowd of 12,488 was on its feet at the University of Dayton Arena as the Minutemen inbounded the ball trailing 53-52 with 3.5 seconds to play. The play was set and Chadwick was tapped to take the final shot.
''If the coach has that kind of confidence in me, I should too,'' Chadwick said. ''I don't mind taking the last shot.''
With less than a second on the clock, however, Chadwick missed, Dayton came down with the rebound and the Flyers squeaked out a one-point win to improve to 17-9 and snag a share of first place in the Atlantic 10 West division at 10-5 with George Washington which lost 71-56 to Saint Joseph's Tuesday.
The Minutemen fell to 15-11, 8-7 in the A-10. If Fordham beats Duquesne tonight at home, UMass will be the East No. 4 seed in next week's Atlantic 10 Tournament.
''I'm pleased with the win but I'm not pleased with how we played,'' Flyers coach Brian Gregory said. ''Somehow we pulled it out, but I still don't know how.''
Neither team generated much offense early as UMass shot only 30.4 percent (7-for-23) in the first half and Dayton managed only 32 percent (8-for-25) from the field.
Chadwick, the lone senior on the roster as injured guard Anthony Anderson did not make the trip to Dayton, connected on a pair of free throws and a layup in the closing minutes of the first half to turn a 22-21 deficit into a 25-22 lead at the break.
''I give their zone credit,'' Gregory said of the Minutemen. ''They disrupted our offense.''
UMass maintained the momentum through much of the second half as back-to-back scores by forward Lawrence Carrier boosted the Minutemen to a 34-27 lead four minutes into the second half, the visitors' biggest lead of the night. Carrier finished the game tied with center Rashaun Freeman with a team-high 11 points and added eight rebounds, the rookie's best performance of the season.
''I came out with a little more intensity tonight,'' Carrier said. ''I never doubted myself, but I was new to the system and I didn't always pursue the opportunities. Tonight I did.''
Flyers forward Monty Scott, who led all scorers with 15 points, poured in a pair of quick scores to cut the UMass lead to two, 34-32, with 14 minutes to play. The Minutemen didn't give up the lead until 8:58 remained in the game after a layup by Dayton senior guard Mark Jones put the Flyers up 40-39.
Dayton led by as many as four points, 44-40, down the stretch. But UMass didn't back down and took its last lead after Freeman snagged a steal and dished it to Maurice Maxwell who dunked to give the Minutemen a 52-51 lead with nine seconds to play.
However, one second later, however, Freeman was called for a foul. Warren Williams made both free throws with four seconds left to put Dayton up 53-52 and set up Chadwick's final shot.
''I thought we played very hard tonight,'' UMass coach Steve Lappas said. ''And I thought they gave a tremendous effort. We're frustrated right now. I think they should let the kids decide the game,'' referring to the foul called at the end on Freeman.
UMass will host Duquesne at 2 p.m. Saturday in the final regular-season game.
''We need to go back, watch the tape, regroup and play the way we know how to play,'' Chadwick said. ''We know what we've got to do on Saturday to end the season with a win.''
