here could be some trash talking in French at the Mullins Center at 7 p.m. tonight when the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team plays its only exhibition game against Concordia University of Montreal. For Minuteman freshman Olivier Lamoureux, who will be making his debut in a UMass uniform, it will be a game against a lot of familiar faces.
"I know 95 percent of their players," said the 6-foot-9, 215-pound big man from Montreal. "I played with them over the summer. (Concordia guard) Brian Finn played with me in high school. I'll be talking with them in French on the court, a little trash talk in French when I box them out on the free throw lane. It's going to be fun."
Lamoureux, one of three French-speaking players on the Minutemen, missed a lot of the preseason after undergoing hernia surgery last month. He said he's almost all the way back.
"I feel good. I'm still not yet 100 percent," he said. "My conditioning is not nearly where I would like it to be. But I can go hard now. It should be fine.
"It was very frustrating, especially as a freshman. I wanted to go out there and prove myself," Lamoureaux continued. "All I could do is sit on the bench and clap. I lost all my conditioning. I lost a little muscle weight. I'm confident I'll get back."
Lamoureux has had a difficult early assignment as he tried to catch up. He's had to guard Minuteman standout forward Rashaun Freeman regularly in practice.
"I think if I can guard Ray, I think can guard anybody in the country," Lamoureux said. "He's got so many moves. He's really a very talented post player."
His pals on the Stingers could suffer similarly against the 6-foot-9-inch Freeman tonight. The two players listed as centers on the Concordia roster stand 6 feet 6 inches (freshman Jamal Gallier) and 6 feet 5 inches (Shawn Collinson). They are the team's two tallest players.
UMass coach Steve Lappas said the matchup would give his big men practice guarding smaller opponents.
"It's not going to be realistic though. In Division I most teams are going to have at least one big guy," Lappas said. "Ray and our big guys are going to have to go out there and chase some people."
Concordia has played four NCAA Division I teams already this year. Virginia, South Carolina and New Hampshire played the Stingers during October preseason trips to Canada. Only UNH left with a loss.
Vermont blasted the Stingers 105-66 Wednesday in Burlington.
Lappas said he is more interested in trying some lineup options than ensuring a victory.
"I want to see a lot of different things," Lappas said. "We're going to try to win, but I'm not going to play the game to win. There are certain combinations that I want to at least get a look at."
Lappas said he is not sure who his starters would be either tonight or in the team's season opener against Birmingham Southern on Nov. 23.
Four of those positions are likely set. Freeman is certain to start at center. Barring a setback with a back injury, Anthony Anderson will start at point guard for his fourth straight season. Maurice Maxwell and Artie Bowers will start on the wings.
The final frontcourt spot will be filled by either Jeff Viggiano, Stephane Lasme or Lawrence Carrier.
After missing a little over a week of practice, Anderson returned Wednesday and did not seem overly slowed by the injury Thursday. But Lappas still wasn't ready to declare him available for tonight's game.
"He was a little sore, but he did practice," Lappas said. "I want to see how he is (today) after two days."
If Anderson doesn't play, or his minutes are limited, senior Chris Chadwick will see more time at point guard.

MHERST, Mass. - UMass topped Concordia of Quebec, 73-64, in the final tune-up before the regular-season opener against Birmingham Southern on Nov. 23. Rashaun Freeman scored a team-high 21 points and added nine rebounds in the win. Art Bowers and Maurice Maxwell each had 15 for UMass.
Art Bowers added 15 points on five 3-pointers. |
With the scored tied at 54 with 6:03 left, UMass went on a 19-6 run to build a 73-60 lead with 54 seconds left before the Stingers added the final four points of the game. In the run, Anthony Anderson and Art Bowers each canned a pair of three-point field goals to put UMass in control for good.
Anderson finished with eight points and handed out a team-high five assists.
UMass shot 58.6 percent from the floor in the second half after a 33 percent first half.
Junior Jeff Viggiano led UMass off the glass with 11 rebounds as the Minutemen outrebounded the the undersized Stingers, 43-32.
UMass' freshman trio of Olivier Lamoureux, Lawrence Carrier and Jeff Salovski made their collegiate debuts as Carrier nailed a three-pointer and the Big Deli had a bucket.
The Stingers, who beat the University of New Hampshire earlier this fall, were led by Patrick Perrotte who had 20.
The Minutemen will have 11 days before their regular-season opener against Birmingham Southern on Nov. 23 at the Mullins Center.
n Friday night, the Massachusetts men's basketball team claimed a hard-fought 73-64 victory over visiting Concordia in its one and only exhibition game of the 2004-2005 season.
Concordia was undersized and overmatched by the Minutemen, yet kept up to speed with a team that is fighting off some rust from the offseason.
The Maroon and White put together a sloppy second half that saw Concordia jump out to as far as a five point lead. The Minutemen responded in the final minutes of the half when Maurice Maxwell was intentionally fouled on a fast break with 4:55 left in the game.
Maxwell hit the free throw, and on the ensuing inbounds play, hit a three that was followed by threes from Artie Bowers and Anthony Anderson. The barrage of late outside shooting put Concordia behind 65-56, a deficit they would never overcome.
UMass started off slow, allowing Concordia to jump out to an early 10-6 lead in the first five minutes. Preseason first team all A-10 sophomore Rashaun Freeman took the offensive weight on his shoulders for the Minutemen, scoring their first six points. Freeman would finish the game with 21 points and nine rebounds.
Freeman was content that UMass came away with the win but recognizes that the Minutemen have a ways to go before the regular season gets underway on Nov. 23, at home against Alabama-Birmingham.
"I'm glad that we finished with a win, but I'm not satisfied with the win because we could have played a lot better," Freeman said. "We came into today and thought we could blow them out, and we came and didn't play to how we wanted to play."
Part of the problem for UMass was its ineptitude from behind the arc in the first half. The Minutemen missed their first seven three-pointers, with Bowers breaking the streak midway through the first half. Bowers' shot was honed for Friday as he scored all his 15 points from three-point land, going five for eight on the evening.
Senior captain Anderson, who missed most of preseason with a bad back, had a slow start and was shut out in the first half. UMass coach Steve Lappas was concerned with his team's play but is confident it will improve as Anderson gets into the swing of things.
"Anthony showed a little bit of rust in the first half. He only really practiced yesterday for the first time so he made a couple of mistakes," Lappas said.
In the waning minutes of the first half, the Minutemen went on a brief scoring barrage led by the keen shooting of Bowers. With UMass leading 17-16, Bowers nailed a three, which was followed up by unanswered buckets from Freeman and Maxwell, leaving the score at 22-16.
The Maroon and White would keep the game near a 10 point differential until the final seconds of the half. Concordia's Ben Sormonte hit point guard Chris Blackwood, who nailed a three as time expired, leaving the score at 31-24 going into the half.
The second half was extremely sloppy for the Minutemen, who committed 14 of their 18 turnovers during the period. Defensive-minded center Staphane Lasme found himself in foul trouble, and Lappas was forced to make an array of substitutions, causing several awkward lineups.
With this, Lappas introduced UMass fans to three new faces in Jeff "Big Deli" Salovski, Lawrence Carrier and Oliver Lamoureux.
Freeman was pleased with how the freshmen played but knows that there is a big difference between an exhibition game and the regular season.
"They've got to feel out what it's like to play in a real game, but this wasn't a real game per se so they got a little taste," Freeman said. "When it comes to next week, I think they'll get a real taste to how a real college game is played."
have to admit I kind of miss the old exhibition games.
Not for any good reason. The new system creates better basketball and it avoids the potential for recruiting abuses that occurred under the old system, but these games ... well, they aren't any fun. The NCAA banned playing barnstorming teams after college programs were using the games as a way to funnel money to people influencing a recruit's college decision.
College programs were paying as much as $25,000 to powerful AAU programs to assemble a collection of its former players to play an exhibition game. The school's real motivation was to gain favor from the AAU coaches to help recruit their current players.
So the NCAA banned the practice and forced Division I teams to play other colleges. UMass Friday played Concordia, a college in Quebec that already had played a couple of games when it arrived at the Mullins Center. Its cohesion made it a more useful opponent to prepare the Minutemen for the regular season.
But they're a dull team. I once saw two barnstorming players in an exhibition game trade sneakers in the middle of a game and then play the last 12 minutes of the game wearing each others shoes. Was that some kind of bonding moment or just a hygienic disaster? I don't know for sure, but I'd bet money that never happens with Concordia.
The beauty of the old exhibitions was that you never knew which or even how many players were going to show up.
It was kind of like digging for the prize in the CrackerJack box. You knew whatever was there was going to be cheap and lousy, but at least it was an unpredictable cheap and lousy.
Annually, the barnstorming team's roster would arrive two or three days in advance and you'd see some recognizable names on it. Last year, ex-Syracuse superstar Lawrence Moten was scheduled to show up with a handful of ex-Orangemen, but the all-time leading scorer in Big East history was nowhere to be seen as some guy from University of the Pacific had taken his place.
Most of these squads were called All-Stars and most teams didn't have anybody who fit that description.
The big hope for fans in these games to be provided with a real live ''Whatever happened to?'' update. Shannon Crooks, Jonathan DePina, Derek Kellogg, Ted Cottrell and others could be seen one more time in the ratty uniforms of those barnstorming outfits.
Every once in a while you'd even get an ex-NBA player on a roster. Richard Dumas showed up playing for the Cocaine Rehab All-Stars or something like that, and another year it was ex-Laker Cedric Ceballos launching 3-pointers without conscience or accuracy.
Usually, though, it would be a collection of guys nobody had heard of or remembered. They even had what seemed like basketball versions of pen names made up to make them seem more colorful. Nobody's name could really be Eggie McRae or Enoch Bunch could it?
The team names were classic, too. Team Fokus ... The geographically ambiguous California All-Stars Midwestern Team ... UMass played against Statmaster.com weeks after the Web site of the same name went bankrupt.
It was worth the price of admission to UMass vs. the Playaz a few years back just to listen to public address announcer Jack O'Neill search for enough street cred to pronounce Playaz.
You never knew if the opposing coach would be wearing an expensive suit or a sweat suit. Coach is a loose use of the word in many cases as these guys' only real responsibility was to sub players in and out.
The results were hard to predict, too. Some bad UMass teams won their exhibition games by 30, while the Final Four-bound 1996 squad lost to the Converse All-Stars.
These games created temporary stars as well. Ronell Blizzard looked like a lottery pick in those games, while Kyle Wilson resembled Steve Nash.
But those games appear to be gone for good now - replaced forever by organization, coaching, some modicum of quality and, sadly, everybody wearing their own shoes at all times.
