t's hard to imagine that the Yale men's basketball team will be intimidated when it arrives in Amherst Sunday for a 2 p.m. game against the University of Massachusetts at the Mullins Center.
After facing No. 1 Wake Forest Monday, anything has to appear a little more manageable to coach James Jones' team. The Bulldogs lost that game 99-72, dropping them to 1-2.
Yale lost 72-71 to Radford in the William & Mary Tip-Off Classic and bounced back to beat Hartford 92-80 in the consolation game of that tournament. While the final score of the loss to Wake Forest wasn't close, Yale's play drew praise from Deacon coach Skip Prosser and earned Bulldog sophomore swingman Casey Hughes some attention. He scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against Wake Forest and is averaging 13.7 points and 8.0 rebounds a game.
Guards Alex Gamboa and Edwin Draughan share the team's scoring lead with 16.3 points per game.
The Bulldogs have more size than most traditional Ivy squads. Only the 6-foot Gamboa is shorter than 6 feet 5 inches in the starting lineup. Draughan, the team's assist leader with 4.3 per game, presents some matchup problems at 6 feet 7 inches.
Center Dominick Martin (11.0 points per game, 6.7 rebounds) is 6 feet 10 inches, 240 pounds and gives the Bulldogs a big body to play against Rashaun Freeman.
NOTES: After finishing last year 12-15, Yale was expected to rebound as the Bulldogs were picked third in the Ivy League's preseason poll. ... The Minutemen will try to improve to 2-0 for the first time since coach Steve Lappas opened his UMass tenure at 4-0 in 2001. ... The two teams last played in 1989 when UMass won 75-69 in overtime. Yale leads the all-time series 3-1. UMass is a combined 32-30 against Ivy League teams. ... Yale reserves Caleb and Nick Holmes are twins.

MHERST, Mass. - Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.) poured in 21 points and Maurice Maxwell (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Lawrence Carrier (San Bernadino, Calif.) scored in double figures, as the University of Massachusetts defeated Yale, 70-56, on Sunday in the Mullins Center. The win improves UMass to 2-0 - the best start since 2001-'02 when Steve Lappas took over as head coach.
It is also the second time a UMass squad has opened with a 2-0 record since the Final Four team of 1995-96 started 26-0.

As a team, UMass was 13-of-16 from the charity stripe - a decisive edge as Yale (1-3) managed just 8-of-20 at the line.
In addition to his 12 points, Maxwell handed out a game-high six assists - just two shy of his career high. The Minutemen also received a lift from Carrier who hit 4-of-7 from the field, including two huge three pointers to spark UMass.
The Minutemen shot 42.6 percent from the field, while Yale hit just 35.5 percent of its shots.
Anthony Anderson (Lynn, Mass.) posted a career-high 13 rebounds leading all players. The Minutmen held a 51-to-33 edge on the glass bolstered in part by Anderson and Stephane Lasme (Libreville, Gabon) who grabbed 10 boards. Lasme also tied his career-high with six blocked shots on the day.
After a slow start to the game, UMass put together a 17-to-4 run over a six minute period late in the first half to take a 32-26 lead into halftime. The Minutemen shot 60 percent during the stretch, including three-pointers from Carrier and Anderson.
Yale never recoverd and the Minutemen were able to build their margin by as much as 17 in the second half.
The Minutemen fell behind early in the first half following an Alex Gamboa three-pointer at the 11:06 mark which gave Yale a 14-9 lead after the Bulldogs hit 6-of-12 field goals to start the game.
Carrier's three-pointer from the top of the key with 7:20 remaining in the first gave UMass a 16-15 lead - its first since leading 4-2 at the 18:34 mark.
In the second period, Yale was never able to cut into the six point margin. A pair of Art Bower (Wilmington, Del.) free throws with 2:16 remaining in the game gave the Minutemen their largest lead, 63-46.
For the Bulldogs, Dominick Martin led all players with 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting. He narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds.
Edwin Draughan and Gamboa each chipped in eight points and five assists.
The Minutemen return to action on Wednesday night when they host Northeastern in the Mullins Center. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
Mass improved to 2-0 for the first time since the 2001-02 season, Steve Lappas' first at UMass. It is also just the second 2-0 start since the Final Four year of 1995-96, when UMass started 26-0.
Senior Anthony Anderson continued to climb several all-time charts at UMass, he is now third in three-point field goals made (233), three-point field goals attempted (598), 10th in assists (316) and 34th in scoring with 1027.
Anderson hauled down a career-high 13 rebounds - seven in the first 12 minutes of the game and nine by halftime. The nine in the first half alone, tied his previous career high, set on three occasions, with the last being at Boston College (12/6/03).
Anderson posted his first career double-figure rebound game.
Rashaun Freeman led all scorers in the first half with 11 points. He finished with a game-high 21, his seventh game with 10-plus points in a row, dating to last season. Freeman scored more than 20 points in a game for the sixth time in his collegiate career.
Lawrence Carrier scored his first career points on his way to a 10-point day. Carrier scored his first-career points on a putback with 8:56 left in the first. He also canned his first career three-pointer with 7:19 left in the first to give UMass a 16-15 lead.
Stephane Lasme had 10 rebounds, the second-most in a game in his career. His career-high was 13 vs. Texas Tech (11/21/03) in the second game of last season.
Lasme's six blocked shots tied a career high for the third time. He last did it at Xavier (2/14/04).
Senior Chris Chadwick drew his fourth career start, first since Feb. 14, 2004 at Xavier. He started in place of Maurice Maxwell.
Yale's Alex Gamboa had the first steal by a UMass opponent with 3:15 of the first half. The Minutemen had just six turnovers in the opener vs. Birmingham-Southern and just 13 vs. Yale.
UMass is 2-3 all-time vs. Yale, winning the last two games. The other win came in a 75-69 overtime victory on Dec. 6, 1989.
Other Notes... Yale won the opening tap ... Art Bowers scored UMass' first points on a jumper at 19:21 of the first half ... Stephane Lasme scored his first points of the season on a foul line jumper at 18:26 ... Maurice Maxwell, who did not start, was the first off the bench along with Jeff Salovski at the 14:54 mark of the first ... Salovski scored his first-career field goal with 12:31 left in the first ... Maxwell had UMass' first dunk of the season with 4:57 left in the first ... UMass had assists on 10 of its 13 baskets in the first half ... Sophomore Drew Rossi and senior Tim Collins made their season debuts in the final minute.
Lappas on play of underclassmen:
We had two freshman come in and give us a tremendous lift, Lawrence Carrier and Jeff Salovski. We had four sophomores, two freshman out there. Its great to see them go out there and play like that together.
Lappas on turnovers:
I think our fourteen turnovers is a little bit skewed. I think four or five were illegal screens, which believe it or not doesn't bother me so much because we emphasize screening so much. If we're going to set four or five hundred screens in a game, I'll take three or four illegal ones.
Lappas on Anderson's play and distribution of points:
What else do you say about Anthony Anderson? He had thirteen rebounds in the game. Its great to see Anthony have six points in the game and win. We couldn't have one a game like this in a million years with Anthony Anderson only scoring six points. You don't even notice it now, where when he didn't score before we almost didn't have a chance. Its good for him to go out there and play and direct these kids that he has out there under him.
Rashaun Freeman on team's play:
We definitely had an intensity out there. The first five or six minutes we didn't come ready to play, but in the second half we stayed with it and got it done.
Freeman on controlling then glass:
As the big men: Me, Stephane, Deli, we crushed them on the glass. Going into the A 10 there is not that many big men, so we can crush them on the glass and be successful.
Lawrence Carrier on extended playing time:
It felt great, the guys are out there working hard, we got a good win. It's the first time we have been 2-0 in a long time. I t doesn't matter if I score or not, I'm out there just to try to get rebounds. Everyday in practice I am competing against these guys, so it helps me get more confidence in my game.
Rashaun Freeman drives on Sam Kaplan.
Stephane Lasme rejects Dexter Upshaw.
Art Bowers sticks to Alex Gamboa.
MHERST, Mass. The Yale mens basketball team got just what it wanted out of center Dominick Martin on Sunday. The problem for the Bulldogs was they got little or nothing from anyone else.
Yale played flat and got flattened by Massachusetts 70-56 before a sparse crowd at the Mullins Center.
"We didnt really have a good shot selection," Yale coach James Jones said. "I thought Dominick started off the game really well. They were in man-to-man and we got the ball inside fairly easily, running sets and executing. They switched up to a zone, and we didnt handle it well. We had opportunities to go inside, and we did not do that."
Martin, Yales 6-foot-11 junior center, scored a career-high 23 points on 10-for-12 shooting and added nine rebounds. The rest of Yales team shot 24 percent, making just 12 of 50 attempts, many of which were less than desirable.
"We were able to execute early, but once they went to the zone, we didnt react well," Yale senior guard Alex Gamboa said. "It took away our momentum, and we took some bad shots."
UMass outrebounded Yale 51-33.
"Ive been talking to these guys about rebounding all week," said UMass coach Steve Lappas, whose team improved to 2-0 for just the second time since the Minutemen advanced to the Final Four in 1995-96.
"We did a really good job on the glass. I thought our guys played well defensively, especially in the second half. I really got after them at halftime about getting to the offensive glass, and they got 10 in the second half, so I was pleased."
Sophomore center Rashaun Freeman led UMass with 21 points. Guard Maurice Maxwell added 12 points and six assists and reserve forward Lawrence Carrier had 10. Senior Anthony Anderson had 13 rebounds and Stephane Lasme had 10 rebounds and blocked six shots.
Yale (1-3) led 15-9 midway through the first half and 17-16 with 6 minutes, 46 seconds left. But then Martin picked up his second foul, and UMass went on a 9-2 run. The Minutemen led 32-26 at halftime.
Yale never got closer than six the rest of the way.
Gamboa and senior guard Edwin Draughan, each averaging 16.3 points, were held to eight each. Both made 3-pointers in the final 4:30. They combined to make 6 of 20 shots from the field.
"I think they kind of shut themselves down," Jones said. "I dont think they played up to their capabilities. I dont know how much the defense had to do with that as opposed to their shot selection, their energy and their passion to play the game. I think if they bring those things on their own, I dont think it makes that much of a difference in terms of what UMass did defensively.
"Not to take anything away from UMass. I just think those are two (good) basketball players. And if they come and bring the passion and energy theyre capable of, I think there is a different outcome in terms of their production."
Yale sophomore guard Casey Hughes, who was late for practice this week, was taken out of the starting lineup for both the first and second halves. Hughes, who had a career-high 20 points against Wake Forest Tuesday, was held to four points on 1-for-9 shooting in 19 minutes.
Yale, which averaged 78.3 points in its first three games, was unable to develop a transition game.
"Its difficult to run (against UMass), but its a different type of basketball game," Jones said. "So instead of being able to run up and down the court and get shots in transition, you need to be able to execute in the half court, and we didnt do that. Our league is a grind-it-out, half-court league for the most part; youre not going to be able to run up and down on everybody, so this is a good opportunity for us to try to run the half court and execute. We didnt do that."
Yale, which struggled with free throw shooting last season, continued its troubles, making just 8 of 20 attempts. The Bulldogs also made just 4 of 16 3-pointers, including three in the final 4:30.
UMass freshman center Jeff "Big Deli" Salovski, a Register All-State selection from Bristol Central, had four points and six rebounds in 10 minutes, drawing praise from both Lappas and teammates for his contributions.

AROUND THE RIM
STAR PLAYER: UMass center Rashaun Freemans 21 points were more valuable to UMass, but Yale center Dominick Martin was the best player on the floor Sunday with 23 points (17 in the second half) and nine rebounds.
NOT IN THE BOX SCORE: In 2001-02, Yale was 4-1 against marquee conferences, with wins over teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big East, Big Ten and Atlantic 10. Since then the Bulldogs are 1-10 against teams from the Atlantic 10, ACC, Big Ten, Big East, Pac-10 and Southeastern conferences.
UP NEXT: Yale plays at Sacred Heart Wednesday at 7 p.m.
On opening night against Birmingham Southern, the Minutemen showed more of the same, losing the battle of the boards on both ends before eventually securing a 64-60 victory. Yet, on Sunday afternoon against Ivy League foe Yale, UMass showed a newfound tenacity on the glass with help from the unlikeliest of sources, as Anthony Anderson grabbed 13 rebounds to help spark a 70-56 non-conference victory before 2,675 at the William D. Mullins Center.
The Maroon and White improved to 2-0 on the season with the win while the Bulldogs fell to 1-3. UMass returns to action on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. tip-off against in-state rival Northeastern at the Mullins Center.
"We did a great job on the glass...I was very pleased," UMass fourth-year head coach Steve Lappas said. "I was upset at having only four offensive rebounds in the first half. We did a much better job of rebounding the ball in the second half."
"We crushed them on the glass," added sophomore forward Rashaun Freeman, who led the Minutemen with 21 points and grabbed five rebounds. "Going into the A-10, there is not that many big men, so we can crush them on the glass and be successful."
For Anderson, who had seven rebounds in the game's first 12 minutes and nine in the first half, the double-figure rebound total was the first of his career. The senior captain also added six points and four assists in a team-high 36 minutes of play.
"What else do you say about Anthony Anderson? He had thirteen rebounds in the game. It's great to see Anthony have six points in the game and win," Lappas said. "We couldn't have won a game like this in a million years with Anthony Anderson only scoring six points."
Sophomore guard Maurice Maxwell, who was suspended for being five minutes late to a team meeting on Friday and did not start, played 25 minutes and contributed 12 points and six assists. Lappas said that the incident was "not a big deal", and indicated that Maxwell will likely return to his starting role when the Minutemen host Northeastern Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Senior guard Chris Chadwick replaced Maxwell in the starting lineup and had five points and three assists in 24 minutes.
Freshmen forwards Lawrence Carrier and Jeff "Big Deli" Salovski also continue to make significant contributions as well. Carrier took advantage of his first significant playing time of the season, scoring 10 points and adding six rebounds in 16 minutes, while Salovski scored four points and hauled in six rebounds in 10 minutes.
"Big Deli," who has become an instant fan favorite, also ignited the small but spirited crowd when he dove after a loose ball and successfully called for time out to secure possession midway through the first half.
"We had two freshmen come in and give us a tremendous lift, Lawrence Carrier and Jeff Salovski," Lappas said. "We had four sophomores, two freshmen out there. It's great to see them go out there and play like that together."
Sophomore Art Bowers also chipped in with six points for UMass while classmate Stephane Lasme posted 10 rebounds and six points as well.
Center and former Princeton transfer Dominick Martin led the Bulldogs with a game- and career-high 23 points but was the lone Yale player in double figures. Guards Edwin Draughan and Alex Gamboa each tossed in eight points while Worcester Academy product Sam Kaplan scored seven points.
Trailing 15-9 halfway through the first half, UMass embarked on a 17-4 run that gave it a lead it did not relinquish. After five points from Carrier sandwiched around a Freeman lay-up gave the Minutemen their second lead of the game at 16-15, Gamboa responded with a driving lay-up of his own to put Yale back out in front.
The Maroon and White then regained control of the contest for good, using a baseline jumper by Freeman and a leaning one-hander from Chadwick to jump out in front 20-17 with 5:11 to play in the half.
After a Chadwick free throw and a transition dunk by Maxwell, the Bulldogs responded with a hoop from Caleb Holmes before Anderson came right back with a 3-pointer that pushed UMass' lead to 26-19 with just over four minutes to play.
The Minutemen then closed the half on a mini 6-2 run, culminating with a strong post move by Freeman that resulted in the final basket of the half with 30 seconds to play, securing a 32-26 halftime lead.
After UMass scored the first seven points of the second half, Yale cut its deficit to six before the Minutemen pulled away for good, opening up leads as large as 17 before eventually sealing the victory.
Neither, however, brings any college basketball experience to a young, up-and-coming Minuteman team looking for more pieces to the puzzle of success - one head coach Steve Lappas feels he can finally piece together this season.
Therefore, when the individual performances of Jeff Salovski and Lawrence Carrier in Saturday's win over Yale translate into "contributor" being added to the list of words that describe the pair of rookies, things may be looking bright for the Minutemen these days.
"[Salovski and Carrier] have helped us in each of the first two games," Lappas said. "They're guys who don't need to come in and take over a game right away, but any contribution we get from them obviously helps us a lot...we feel they are both going to be very good players."
In the win over Yale, the pair combined for 14 points and 12 rebounds in 26 minutes of play after amassing just two points and three rebounds in seven minutes in the season opener against Birmingham Southern. It's the type of improvement Lappas hopes will only continue to manifest itself over the course of the season and the type of improvement he expected when he signed both players.
"When we brought both guys in, we knew they were going to be very good players eventually," Lappas said. "We have such a strong nucleus of guys around them that they can both grow and get better in our system and really make us that much better now and down the line."
For Carrier, who sat out last season as an academic non-qualifier, Sunday's game was the first chance for the 6-foot-8 forward to showcase the skills that made him a top-five recruit nationally in high school. Known as a deadly long-range shooter, Carrier shot 50 percent from beyond the arc (2-for-4) but also showed good prowess in getting to the hoop on three separate occasions, including a solid basket cut and lay-up in the second half.
"It felt great [to contribute]," Carrier said. It doesn't matter if I score or not; I'm out there just to try to get rebounds. Everyday in practice I am competing against these guys so it helps me get more confidence in my game."
"The Big Deli", meanwhile, made a strong first impression on the Mullins Center faithful when he entered Tuesday night's contest late in the second half and hit two crucial free throws to help ice a victory. He then continued to assert himself as a fan favorite on Sunday, scoring four points and grabbing six boards in his 10 minutes of play before showing his tenacity by diving for a loose ball on the floor in the first half.
"I just want to get better and help the team each game," Salovski said following the win over BSC. "All I can do is work hard and hope that I can continue to do my part in helping us be successful."
The 5-foot-11 guard from Lynn, who'd never collected more than nine rebounds in a game, pulled down eight in the first half alone, finishing with a game-high 13 in the Minutemen's 70-56 conquest of Yale before 2,675 at the Mullins Center.
``It's not like I have to box anybody out,'' said Anderson, who scored six points and handed out four assists. ``I'm usually covering the point guard and he doesn't have to crash (the glass). I'm a shooter, so I can see on the release if it's going to be short or long, then I just go get it.''
Stephane Lasme contributed 10 rebounds and blocked six shots as UMass cleaned up on the boards, with a 51-33 advantage against the Bulldogs.
Rashaun Freeman led the Minutemen (2-0) with 21 points on an array of low-post moves and short jumpers. Maurice Maxwell added 12 points and freshman Lawrence Carrier came off the bench for 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.
UMass led 32-26 at the break and scored the first seven points of the second half. After Yale answered with seven straight points, Carrier and Maxwell hit back-to-back 3-pointers to pull away. The UMass lead never fell below double digits over the final 14 minutes, topping out at 17 points.
``We're out there with four sophomores and two freshmen, and it's great to see them go out there and play like that together,'' UMass coach Steve Lappas said. ``You don't even notice it now that Anthony had only six points. Before, when he didn't score, we almost didn't have a chance.''
Bulldogs center Dominick Martin, a 6-10, 235-pound junior, had his way inside, hitting his team's first three baskets of the game and its first five of the second half. Martin finished with 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting, nine rebounds and a pair of blocks. Guards Edwin Draughan and Alex Gamboa, each averaging over 16 points coming into the game, managed just eight points apiece.
Yale (1-3) took its largest lead of the game (15-9) with 10:14 to play in the first half on a Casey Hughes free throw. The Minutemen hit back with a 14-2 run, taking the lead to stay at 18-17 on Freeman's close-range jumper in the lane. Chris Chadwick then converted a three-point play and Maxwell picked Gamboa's pocket and went in for a breakaway dunk.
Poor foul shooting prevented the Bulldogs from making it closer. Yale was just 3-of-9 at the line in the first half and 8-of-20 overall. Meanwhile, UMass went 13-of-16 behind Maxwell (5-of-5) and Freeman (5-of-6).
Jeff ``Big Deli'' Salovski, the Minutemen's 6-11, 340-pound freshman center, wound up the sparse crowd midway through the second half by shedding a pair of Yale defenders, diving for a loose ball and calling a timeout just before sliding across the baseline. He had four points and six boards in 10 minutes.
But for the 2,675 fans who weathered the monsoon to watch the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team in action, there was a bit of a surprise: The Minutemen might be pretty good this year. They turned in their second straight encouraging effort with a 70-56 victory over Yale and improved to 2-0 for the first time in three seasons.
UMass dominated the 1-3 Bulldogs on the boards, 51-33. According to 6-foot-9-inch sophomore center Rashaun Freeman, who led the Minutemen with 21 points, "We crushed them on the glass."
Surprisingly, the king crusher was point guard Anthony Anderson -- generously listed at 5-11 -- who hauled down a career-high 13 rebounds. Though he only scored 6 points, he was a dominating presence.
Such an effort, UMass coach Steve Lappas said, points to the improvement of his team from a year ago when it was 10-19 and relied on Anderson for scoring.
"We couldn't have won a game like this in a million years with Anthony Anderson only scoring 6 points," Lappas said. "You don't even notice it now. When he didn't score before, we almost didn't have a chance."
The Minutemen got many strong contributions. Sophomores Maurice Maxwell (12 points, 6 assists, 3 steals) and Stephane Lasme (10 rebounds, 6 blocks) were active on both ends.
Notably, a pair of freshmen also delivered quality minutes and added significantly to UMass's frontcourt depth, something that was nonexistent a year ago.
Lawrence Carrier, a 6-8 power player with a feathery touch, scored 10 points (including two 3-pointers) and grabbed six rebounds. And Jeff "Big Deli" Salovski added 4 points and six boards. Salovski, who admits that his listing of 6-11, 325 pounds is about 25 pounds too conservative, earned the greatest roar from the crowd when he made a headlong dive for a loose ball midway through the second half.
Lappas was not surprised. Over Thanksgiving, he told his family, "When Deli dives on a loose ball, this place is going to go crazy." After yesterday's crash landing, Lappas added, "I don't know if the floor is going to be the same."
Yale was led by 6-10 center Dominick Martin, who scored a game-high 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting. He displayed a soft touch around the glass, frustrating UMass's interior defense until Lappas decided to play zone.
The Bulldogs led for most of the first half, before going to the locker room down, 32-26. After intermission, UMass quickly opened the lead to double digits and kept it comfortable the rest of the way.
The Bulldogs clanged their way to an 8-for-20 performance at the line.
The remaining 25 games on the Minuteman schedule include quite a few teams expected to be better than Yale. But UMass, which has struggled against lesser teams in recent years, took care of business Sunday and dominated most facets of the game. ''I thought our guys played very well defensively and on the glass especially for the last 30 minutes of the game,'' UMass coach Steve Lappas said. ''I thought we were very efficient. We did a lot of good things in the second half. We got good shots. We rebounded. We kept control.''
The Minutemen, who are 2-0 for the first time since the 2001-02 season, will try to make it 3-0 at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Northeastern in the Mullins Center.
Junior big man Rashaun Freeman didn't get double-teamed nearly as much as he did in Tuesday's win over Birmingham Southern and took advantage by scoring 21 points while displaying most of his arsenal of post moves.
Maurice Maxwell scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half and led the Minutemen with six assists. Sophomore rookie Lawrence Carrier had 10 points and six rebounds.
Anthony Anderson scored six points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds despite being the shortest player on the court at 5 feet 11 inches. Anderson, who led the Minutemen in defensive rebounds as a junior, had 12 on the defensive glass. He said there is no secret formula to his success.
''I just basically go after them,'' Anderson said. ''You can kind of see on the release if it's going to be long or short and I just go get it.''
Lappas said Anderson has two traits that make him strong on the glass.
''He's smart and fearless,'' said Lappas, who was encouraged by the team's decreasing reliance on Anderson's scoring. ''Last year we couldn't win a game like this with Anthony only scoring six points. You don't even notice it now. It's great to see that.''
Stephane Lasme had six blocks and 10 boards.
The play of Anderson and Lasme helped reverse Tuesday's problems as the Minutemen outrebounded Yale 51-33.
UMass' free-throw shooting improved as well as the Minutemen hit 13-of-16 from the line (81.3 percent). The Minutemen held the Bulldogs to well under their 78.3 points-per-game average so far this season.
''We crushed them on the glass,'' Freeman said. ''That what we wanted to do in the game.''
Yale jumped out quickly making five of their first six shots and led 15-9 on the strength of six of Dominick Martin's game-high 23 points.
But the Minutemen switched to a zone defense, which slowed him and the Bulldog offense. Yale made only one of its next 11 tries. UMass seized the momentum with a 14-2 run to go ahead 23-17 and carried a 32-26 lead into halftime.
UMass scored the first seven points of the second half and was never really threatened after that.
Matt Vautour can be reached at [email protected].
''He came in and he was active,'' Lappas said. ''He was involved and he was able to make shots. ... I put him in early and he deserved to play more.''
Carrier showed glimpses of why he was highly touted in high school with 10 points and six rebounds in 16 minutes for the Minutemen Sunday. He made four of seven shots and two of four from 3-point range.
''It felt great. Guys were out there working hard. We're 2-0 for the first time in a while. We're feeling good right now,'' said Carrier, who added that he wasn't focusing on scoring. ''I was just focused on getting rebounds. The offense came by itself.''
Junior Rashaun Freeman said Carrier is coming along.
''He's good,'' Freeman said. ''His defense has to get better as mine did last year, but he gets better every day in practice.''
SECOND HELPING - UMass freshman big man Jeff ''Big Deli'' Salovski'' followed up his strong debut at the end of Tuesday's game with a solid second effort. He finished with four points and six rebounds in 10 minutes Sunday.
The 6-foot-11-inch, 350-pound crowd favorite added to its appreciation of him when he dove on a loose ball and called a time-out to save a UMass possession.
''He dives in practice every day,'' Lappas said. ''I knew it was coming. I said the place is going to go berserk when he does it.''
The UMass game operations staff is having fun with his nickname. When Salovski scores, public address announcer Jack O'Neill announces simply, ''The Big Deli.'' However when he's whistled for a foul, he's still ''Jeff Salovski.''
LAMOUREUX OUT - UMass freshman big man Olivier Lamoureux has yet to appear in a game this season. The Montreal native suffered a shoulder strain in practice Saturday. Lappas said Lamoureux could have played in an emergency, but opted on the side of caution.
MAXWELL LATE, CHADWICK STARTS - Sophomore wing Maurice Maxwell returned five minutes late from Thanksgiving, costing him his spot in the starting lineup Sunday.
''It was no big deal,'' Lappas said. ''It was typical post-Thanksgiving. He was five minutes late.''
Senior Chris Chadwick started in his place and scored five points in 24 minutes. ''I think Chris did a great job tonight,'' Lappas said. ''He's a very important guy on this team.''
Maxwell scored a dozen off the bench and added six assists and three steals.
NEXT UP - Northeastern, which comes to Amherst at 7 p.m. Wednesday, is 1-2 after losing to Harvard 85-75 Saturday.
MISCELLANEOUS - Junior Jeff Viggiano played just seven minutes and had two rebounds while going scoreless in the win.
''Vig is a team guy. He'll do whatever you want,'' Lappas said. ''He'll be ready Wednesday night. He's happy we won. He's happy to be 2-0.''
Senior forward Brennan Martin didn't see action for the second straight game.
Freshman walk-on Drew Rossi saw the first playing time of his career when he and senior Tim Collins checked in with less than a minute left. Fellow walk-on Nana Ampim has yet to dress for a game as the Minutemen wait for him to be approved to play by the NCAA Clearinghouse.

Minutemen stomp Yale
By Mike Marzelli, The Daily Collegian Staff, 11/29/2004ne of the Massachusetts men's basketball team's major flaws in struggling through an 11-17 campaign last season was its inability to rebound both offensively and defensively - a problem often exploited by bigger, stronger and more physical teams as the year wore on.
Freshman pair contributing early
By Mike Marzelli, The Daily Collegian Staff, 11/29/2004ne is affectionately known to a cult following in and around Massachusetts men's basketball as "The Big Deli," while the other is simply known to his teammates as "LC." They are the new faces of Massachusetts men's basketball.
Anderson, UMass outmuscle Yale
By George Miller, The Boston Herald, 11/29/2004MHERST - Even UMass senior Anthony Anderson found something new to add to his resume yesterday.
UMass is sharp on glass
Rebounding key to second win
By Marty Dobrow, The Boston Globe Correspondent, 11/29/2004MHERST -- Yesterday was a good day to get a free T-shirt at the Mullins Center. With a sparse crowd on hand, prospects for claiming freebies hurled by cheerleaders during timeouts were excellent.
UMass too tough for Yale
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 11/29/2004ot many people saw it, but the 2,675 fans who did take in 70-56 win by the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team over Yale Sunday had to leave the Mullins Center feeling optimistic.
Dominick Martin appears frightened as Rashaun Freeman's hair goes Medusa as he drives baseline.
Carrier sparks UMass
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 11/29/2004niversity of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Steve Lappas had the same plan for sophomore rookie Lawrence Carrier Sunday as he did on Tuesday - put him in early, see how he responded and go from there. After playing two ineffective minutes against Birmingham Southern Tuesday, Carrier provided a spark right away in Sunday's 70-56 win over Yale.
