UMass plays six at home
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 12/18/2004

After a week of exams and rehab, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team returns home trying to get back in the win column and build a little momentum heading into conference play. The game against Davidson at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Mullins Center starts a six-game stretch at home for the Minutemen (3-3).

UMass coach Steve Lappas said he isn't thrilled about the timing of the game.

''We usually don't play a game during finals, but we weren't able to get a date so we had to do it,'' he said.

Several players sat out stretches of practice this week to try to clear up nagging injuries. Artie Bowers and Stephane Lasme both missed time with ankle injuries, while Anthony Anderson rested his chronically sore back. Olivier Lamoureux, who has battled an Achilles tendon injury throughout the season, remained out of action.

All except Lamoureux are expected to play against the Wildcats.

Bowers said the improvement of his ankle would help his shooting.

''My ankle is back,'' Bowers said. ''I feel a whole lot more confident so I'll be able to help my team out on the perimeter.''

Maurice Maxwell, who didn't start against Miami after being sick the day before, will return to the starting lineup. As UMass' top perimeter defender, he'll likely spend time guarding Brendan Winters, Davidson's top scorer who was averaging 16.4 points before the Wildcats' game Friday.

Logan Kosmalski is the Wildcats' strongest inside presence, averaging 11.9 points and 7.5 rebounds before Friday's game. He transferred to Davidson from Baylor.

His brother Landry Kosmalski, who is an assistant coach for Davidson, had 11 points and 12 rebounds in the Wildcats' 75-66 win over UMass at the Mullins Center on Dec. 29, 1998.

Amherst is the latest stop on an odd schedule for Davidson, which has played five games against teams from top-level conferences, one against Georgia Southern and three against non-Division I teams.

The Wildcats opened with an 84-81 upset of Missouri and hung with Duke for a while before falling 74-61. After pummeling Maine-Farmington, 103-33, the Wildcats fell to Saint Joseph's (76-61) and Georgetown (76-51) in back-to-back games. Davidson bounced back to beat Georgia Southern (84-76), but fell to Charlotte (87-68). It will enter Sunday's game coming off of two straight wins over non-Division I teams with wins over Brandeis (69-49) and the University of the South (87-42).

''They're pretty good. They won at Missouri and played Duke very tough and Charlotte very tough for a long time,'' Lappas said. ''They're a smart team. They shoot the ball very well and their big guys are good.''

NOTES: Minuteman sophomore big man Alassane Kouyate, who missed all of last season and this season with a knee injury, is returning to Ohio for the school's winter session.

He will do rehabilitation with the Cleveland-based doctor who performed his knee operation a year ago in hopes of getting healthy enough to resume his career.

Barring a blizzard or record-low turnout, Sunday's game will feature the one millionth fan to see a game at the Mullins Center. Only 1,680 spectators are needed to reach seven digits since the Mullins Center opened Feb. 4, 1993. The winner will receive season tickets for the 2005-06 season and a free trip to the 2005 Atlantic 10 Tournament in Cincinnati.

Minutemen Tame Wildcats 70-67
UMass climbs to 4-3 overall with the win over Davidson
From UMass Athletics, 12/19/2004

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts defeated Davidson College 70-67 in a nonconference game on Sunday afternoon at the Mullins Center. Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.) came off the bench to score a team-high 14 points and five boards to lift the Minutemen to 4-3 overall.

The Mullins Center also saw its 1,000,000th men's basketball fan walk through the turnstiles on Sunday. Amherst's own Zachary Gabor was greeted by Senior Associate A.D. Thorr Bjorn before the contest and was honored during a timeout during the opening half. To date, 1,001,004 fans have seen the Minutemen basketball team in action at Mullins.

The Minutemen and Wildcats (5-5) were evenly matched through the first half, with UMass holding two and three-point leads early on. Davidson opened up the contest with an 8-0 run behind a jumper and trey from Jason Morton to take the 19-13 lead.

Maurice Maxwell (Philadelphia, Pa.) helped close the gap for UMass, starting a 12-6 run to knot the game at 26. Chris Chadwick (Union, N.J.) drained a three pointer, adding two of his four total field goals in that span for the Minutemen.

Massachusetts regained the lead for good with 2:41 remaining in the first, capitalizing on Wildcat miscues to take the 34-30 advantage into the locker room at the half.

The Wildcats stayed within striking distance throughout the second, taking their first lead with 6:10 remaining in the game--Davidson's first advantage since the 5:42 mark of the first. UMass quickly regained composure with an Art Bowers (Wilmington, Del.) three and followed that up with foul shots by Jeff Viggiano (Suffield, Conn.) for the two-basket cushion.

Both teams exchanged field goals through the waning minutes of the game, with UMass holding the 67-65 advantage with less than a minute to go. Freeman was put on the line for two with 36 seconds left to extend the lead by three and the Minutemen held on for the 70-67 victory.

Chadwick, seeing a season-high 35 minutes of play, scored 11 points--his fourth time scoring in the double digits in his career and first time this season. Bowers added 13 and Viggiano chipped in 12.

Morton scored a game-high 18 points for the Wildcats in the loss.

The Minutemen shot 48.1 percent overall and were seven of 12 from beyond the arc. They also capitalized with five blocks in the contest. Davidson was held to .436 shooting in the game.

UMass returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 23 when they host Rider at 7 p.m.

Head Coach Steve Lappas general comments on the game:
I was very pleased with the way our guys played for 40 minutes. Defensively, I thought it was a tremendous effort and I was very proud of the way they executed the plan the way we wanted to be. We limited their threes, which was a big part of our game plan. I thought our perimeter defense was unbelievable in this game. We made very few mistakes switching on their screens. I thought that in the last five minutes of the game we did a great job of getting good possessions every time down the floor. That's why we won the game.

Lappas on the team effort and energy:
I think we've had a lot of games where the team's energy has been great. The Connecticut game was energetic and we had a lot of energy today. I think we've had a lot of energy in most of the games we've played this year. It was great to see our guys step up and it was a great team win. Brennan Martin contributed and Deli did a great job again. When I got in to the locker room I told them that this was a great team effort.

Lappas on Chris Chadwick:
I thought Chris Chadwick did a super job. The only mistake he made was the pass he made at the end of the first half that they ended up converting in to a layup. He did a great job defensively; he did a great job running the show. I was very proud of Chris and I was happy for him because he's worked hard and it's nice to see him be able to go out there and make a difference in this game.

Lappas comments about oncourt leadership without Anderson:
I think we had a lot of leaders out there who could lead. I though Chris Chadwick did a great job. He played like a senior today even though he's only a second year guy for us. Art Bowers, Maurice Maxwell and Jeff Viggiano all have great minds for the game, and I thought the burden was shared tonight. I can't say any one guy lead the team. We had a lot of guys playing like veterans.

Lappas on the game plan with Chadwick at the point:
We didn't change our game plan. I just told Chris `You're not Anthony Anderson, and Anthony Anderson is not you. You have tremendous driving ability and he's an unbelievable three point shooter. I don't want you to go out there and play like Anthony Anderson, I want you to go out an play like Chris Chadwick.' That didn't mean he couldn't take any threes. He took one, he was wide open, and he knocked it down. I wanted him to play like Chris Chadwick though and he did.

Lappas on the emergence of Art Bowers:
He probably made the biggest shot of the game. We went down one, the only time we were down in the game, and he comes down and makes the three on the next possession. He made a couple of threes in the last six or seven minutes of the game and hopefully he's finding his stroke again because that's an important part of our game.

Lappas comments on execution of the game plan:
When we have a game, we have to implement our style of play on the other team. We are a great half court team. We've got guys who can pass, dribble and shoot. We've got a big guy who scores and we've got some other big guys who are developing. We'll take advantage of layups off steals, but we are best going five on five. I think we've done a great job of imposing our will on the other team.

Lappas on Kosmalski:
He's a good player. He's their second highest scorer, so it's not like it's a surprise. He's a tough kid and he's a good player. He's a fifth year guys, so he's got a lot of savvy. He's strong and I've got to give him credit, him and Ian Johnson. They really gave us all we wanted, those guys had 29 points and 16 rebounds between them. Our goal was to lock up their perimeter and let some one else beat us. We were fortunate to be able to do that and win the game.

Chadwick, UMass take down Davidson
By Rich Thompson, The Boston Herald, 12/20/2004

AMHERST - UMass coach Steve Lappas got the total team effort he demanded after reconfiguring his starting lineup before yesterday's 70-67 victory against Davidson at the Mullins Center.

Lappas suspended his starting point guard, senior Anthony Anderson, for three games for violating team rules and started Chris Chadwick. He also benched starting center Rashaun Freeman for an incident in practice Saturday and replaced him with Jeff Viggiano.

Despite the changes, the Minutemen (4-3) shot 48.1 percent from the floor and had four players in double figures. Freeman led the pack with 14 points and five rebounds, and Art Bowers had 13 points and five boards. Viggiano added 12 points and three assists and Chadwick had 11 points and three assists.

``I was very pleased by the way our guys played for 40 minutes and executed the plan the way we wanted to,'' Lappas said. ``I think we've had a lot of games with a lot of energy, and I was happy to see our guys step up and it was a great win.''

Chadwick was forced to direct the offense in place of Anderson, and the senior was up to the task. He complemented his scoring and passing with four rebounds, a steal and tenacious perimeter defense.

``I thought I played all right and I'm happy we got the win,'' Chadwick said. ``I'm always ready to play. I need games like this for coach Lappas to have confidence in me.''

Chadwick and Anderson have contrasting styles, which concerned Lappas. Anderson is a superb ballhandler and a deadly 3-point shooter, while Chadwick is a more physical player who creates opportunities by driving to the basket. Lappas wanted Chadwick to replace Anderson without changing his style.

``He did a great job defensively, he did a great job running the show and I was very proud for Chris because he's worked hard,'' Lappas said. ``It was nice to see him go out there and make a difference in this game, and he did.''

A 3-pointer by Chadwick with 12:25 to play gave the Minutemen a 47-39 lead, but Davidson (5-5) rallied behind the inside play of Ian Johnson (17 points, eight rebounds) and Logan Kosmalski (12 points, eight rebounds) and the perimeter shooting of Jason Morton, who led all scorers with 18 points, including four 3-pointers.

The Wildcats took their final lead, 56-55, with 6:11 to play on a 3-pointer by Morton, and Bowers countered with a baseline trey to put UMass ahead to stay. Davison kept pace, but the Minutemen sealed the victory with three free throws in the final 36 seconds. Johnson scored a layup at the buzzer for the three-point margin.

``Bowers probably made the biggest shot in the game when we went down by one,'' Lappas said. ``We go down one and he comes back and makes the 3 on the next possession, and I think Art did a great job tonight.''

The Minutemen were successful getting the ball down low to Stephane Lasme and Viggiano, but Davidson point guard Kenny Grant (eight points, six assists) was equally effective finding Kosmalski on the blocks.

Kosmalski scored eight of the Wildcats' first 13 points, including a nifty baby hook that made it 13-13 with 11:47 to play before halftime.

Freeman, who came into the game for the first time with 14:25 left in the first half, gave the Minutemen a 28-26 advantage with a pair of free throws with 3:12 remaining before the break. Johnson tied the game with a hook shot off the glass, but Bowers countered with a jumper and Freeman scored on a tip-in. Jeff Salovski gave UMass a 34-30 halftime lead with a tip-in at the buzzer.

Lappas suspends Anderson 3 games
By Rich Thompson, The Boston Herald, 12/20/2004

UMass coach Steve Lappas suspended senior Anthony Anderson of Lynn three games for violating team rules. Anderson's suspension began with yesterday's 70-67 win against Davidson at the Mullins Center.

Anderson also will miss Thursday night's home game against Rider and won't play Dec. 28 when the Minutemen host Boston University.

Lappas would not comment on the specifics of Anderson's suspension. Anderson, the team's point guard and captain, is 29th on the school's career scoring list with 1,073 points and needs one more basket to pass Shannon Crooks (1,074) of Everett. Anderson is tied with Carmelo Travieso for second place in school history with 245 3-pointers. Anderson is averaging 11 points in six games this season and has 17 steals and 21 assists.

Lappas was impressed by his team's ability to win without Anderson.

``I go into the game knowing that every game I've coached since I've been here Anthony Anderson was there for a lot of minutes,'' Lappas said. ``I thought our guys stepped up and won as a team.''

New look down low

Lappas made several changes to his starting frontcourt for yesterday's win. He lifted sophomore center Rashaun Freeman from the starting lineup, moved Stephane Lasme into the middle and inserted sixth man Jeff Viggiano at power forward.

Freeman was benched because of an incident in practice on Saturday but still played 26 minutes and finished with 14 points and five rebounds. Viggiano netted 12 points including a key 3-pointer that gave UMass a 55-51 lead with 7:26 to play.

``I just didn't get down on myself. I had a tough practice and something happened in it,'' Freeman said. ``I wasn't allowed to start, but I didn't allow that to get into my head.''

Salvoski pitches in

Freshman center Jeff Salvoski is a crowd favorite in Amherst despite averaging just 5.3 minutes and one point per game. The 6-foot-11, 325-pounder from Bristol, Conn., received a huge ovation when he scored on a tip-in at the buzzer to give the Minutemen a 34-30 lead at the break. He finished with four points and three rebounds in 12 minutes and set some solid picks. . . .

Zachary Gabor of Amherst was the 1 millionth fan to attend a men's game at the Mullins Center. He won two season tickets and free concessions through the 2005-06 season. He also received two plane tickets and accommodations for the 2005 Atlantic 10 Tournament in Cincinnati. . . .

Davidson brought an international flavor to the Mullins Center. Senior forward Conor Grace hails from Dublin, Ireland, and freshman forward Boris Meno is from Paris.

UMass takes win for a spin
By Marty Dobrow, The Boston Globe Correspondent, 12/20/2004

AMHERST -- It's hard to know how to interpret yesterday's 70-67 victory by the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team over Davidson.

Through a half-full glass, the win can be seen as a gritty effort against a quality team. After all, Davidson opened its season by beating Missouri on the road, then trailed Duke by just 4 points with less than five minutes remaining in a 74-61 loss.

Of course, the UMass victory also could be seen as a narrow escape at home against a mid-major that has padded its 5-5 record with wins over Division 3 opponents Brandeis, Sewanee, and Maine-Farmington.

Since UMass was playing without senior point guard Anthony Anderson, who sat out the first game of a three-game suspension for an undisclosed violation of team rules, the triumph could be seen as an inspiring example of younger players coming of age to assume the mantle of leadership.

Or perhaps the fact that Anderson watched in street clothes, while team star Rashaun Freeman was denied the start because of a similarly undisclosed blowup in practice, might indicate that there are some deep fissures in the team during this make-or-break year for coach Steve Lappas.

Not surprisingly, the Minutemen chose the positive spin. Lappas described the game as "a great team win" and "the ultimate team effort."

"It's a good win," echoed Freeman. "When we have to fight adversity and things that are happening, that's when we play our best. When everything is OK, it gives us problems."

To be sure, the 4-3 Minutemen had plenty to feel good about. The team got solid contributions from all nine players who stepped on the court. The balance was particularly impressive with four double-figure scorers: Freeman (14), Art Bowers (13), Jeff Viggiano (12), and Chris Chadwick (11).

Playing for Anderson, Chadwick gave the Minutemen a new look at point, a player with off-the-dribble explosiveness. He played in control throughout, going 4 for 6 from the floor and distributing three assists in 35 minutes. Additionally, he was a key part of UMass's solid perimeter defense that held starting guards Brendan Winters and Matt McKillop to 1-for-9 shooting from behind the arc. The pair had combined for more than five 3-pointers per game, and both were shooting with impressive accuracy (47.9 and 44.2, respectively).

UMass also demonstrated impressive crunch-time execution. When Davidson took its only second-half lead on a 3-pointer by Jason Morton (a game-high 18) with 6:11 left, UMass responded immediately on a Bowers trey from the left corner. Key points on the line from Viggiano and Maurice Maxwell, coupled with another 3 from Bowers, and 5 hard-earned points in the paint by Freeman kept the Minutemen ahead.

Davidson, a team with exceptional bloodlines (Winters and Logan Kosmalski are the sons of former NBA players), did not demonstrate much cool at the finish. A tying 3-point bid by Morton with 23 seconds left barely grazed iron, and Winters's follow never got close to the rim. After Maxwell hit a free throw with 12.5 seconds left, extending UMass's lead to 69-65, point guard Kenny Grant barreled into Freeman for a charge that sealed the win.

Afterward, Lappas refused to address Anderson's suspension. Just a week before, following UMass's upset of defending national champion Connecticut, Lappas was effusive in his praise of Anderson's leadership. "This kid has stuck with me, and he's stuck with all the things that we've been doing," Lappas said.

Yesterday Lappas said Anderson was a critical presence on the bench who fully supported his teammates, but the coach kept the reason for the suspension under wraps. "I have nothing to say," said Lappas.

UMass holds off Wildcats
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 12/20/2004

AMHERST - Chris Chadwick turned turmoil on the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team into an opportunity Sunday.

With senior captain Anthony Anderson on the bench serving a three-game suspension, Chadwick turned in the most important game in his two-year stint at UMass and led the Minutemen to a 70-67 win over Davidson at the Mullins Center.

Playing a career-high 35 minutes, Chadwick had 11 points and three assists and generally kept the Minutemen poised and under control throughout.

''I thought Chris Chadwick did a super job. He did a great job defensively and a great job running the show,'' UMass coach Steve Lappas said. ''I was proud of Chris and happy for him because he's worked hard. It's nice to see him get out there and real make a difference.''

Chadwick downplayed his impact.

''I played all right. I'm just glad we got the win,'' said Chadwick, who said he wasn't nervous with the added responsibility. ''I'm always ready to play. I think Coach Lap has confidence. I think this will give him more confidence.''

While Anderson is more of a perimeter point guard who prefers to run things from the outside and shoot 3-pointers, Chadwick utilized his ability to beat his defender, drive to the basket and either score or find an open teammate.

''I think that's a strong part of my game,'' he said. ''I can get to the basket and create open threes for other people.''

Junior big man Rashaun Freeman said players rallied around each other to combat the distraction.

''It's funny when we have to fight adversity is when we play the best. It's when everything is OK that we run into problems,'' Freeman said. ''That was a good team. This was a good win.''

Lappas praised his team's effort.

''I was very pleased with the way our guys played for 40 minutes,'' he said. ''Defensively I thought it was a tremendous effort. I was very proud of the way we executed the plan and limited their threes. I thought our perimeter defense was unbelievable. This was the ultimate team effort.''

UMass (4-3) will host Rider at 7 p.m. Thursday

Jason Morton of Davidson (5-5) had a career-high 18 points, including a 3-pointer with six minutes, 11 seconds left that put the Wildcats ahead 56-55. But Artie Bowers, who shot the ball better than he had all season, answered with a 3-pointer from the corner to seize back the lead.

Davidson stayed within striking distance down the stretch. Logan Kosmalski put back an offensive rebound with 56 seconds left to cut UMass' lead to 67-65.

Freeman made one of two free throws to push the lead to three points. After Morton missed a game-tying 3-point try, Brendan Winters snared the offensive rebound but missed the follow-up shot.

Maurice Maxwell grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 12 seconds left. He made one free throw to put the game out of reach.

''I thought in the last five minutes we did a very good job getting good possessions,'' Lappas said. ''That's why we won the game.''

Because of an incident in practice during the week, Freeman began the game on the bench, giving the Minutemen the odd combination of Bowers, Maxwell, Chadwick, Stephane Lasme and Jeff Viggiano to start the game. Freeman played 26 minutes and scored a team-high 14 points and grabbed five rebounds.

''I wasn't used to coming off the bench, but I adapted to it,'' Freeman said.

Lappas said Freeman's infraction was minor.

Bowers had 13 points on 5-for-11 shooting. He made three of the five 3-pointers he attempted. Viggiano added 12 points.

''I thought Art did a great job,'' Lappas said. ''Hopefully he's finding his stroke again because that's a big part of our game.''

Defensively the Minutemen held Winters, Davidson's leading scorer, to just 10 points on 3-of-12 shooting.

MILLIONTH FAN - The crowd of 2,684 included the millionth fan a men's basketball game at the Mullins Center.

Zachary Gabor, 10, of Amherst walked into the building at the right time. He was given two season tickets and free concessions for the 2005-06 men's basketball season, as well as two plane tickets and hotel accommodations for the 2005 Atlantic 10 Tournament in Cincinnati.

MARTIN SCORES - With 10:36 remaining in the second half, senior Brennan Martin knocked down a 3-pointer for his first points of the season. After not appearing in UMass' first five games, Martin has played in the last two.

Lappas said he expects to use him more while Anderson is out.

''Brennan Martin came out and did a great job,'' Lappas said. ''You need to have five guys available to play out there.''

Anderson fails drug test, suspended for three games
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 12/20/2004

University of Massachusetts senior Anthony Anderson served the first game of a three-game suspension Sunday after failing a drug test.

Athletic director John McCutcheon and men's basketball coach Steve Lappas both declined to comment on the nature of Anderson's violation, calling it a ''violation of team rules.''

But multiple sources in the athletic department confirmed the reason for Anderson's suspension.

Anderson, who watched Sunday's game against Davidson in street clothes on the bench, was not available for comment.

He is allowed to practice, but cannot play in Thursday's home games against Rider or Dec. 28 against Boston University.

Anderson is averaging 11 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists through six games. He is expected to return to action Jan. 2 against Boston College.

McCutcheon said that he was part of the decision-making process that led to Anderson's suspension. ''In any suspension, it would be a decision by myself and the coach,'' he said.

McCutcheon said an outside agency contracts with UMass to administer tests on a monthly basis and players from each sport are chosen at random to participate. The tests detect anything on the NCAA's banned substance list, including marijuana, narcotics and performance-enhancing drugs. Jeff Smith, the school's associate athletic director for sports medicine, coordinates the process. If any treatment results from a failed drug test, is kept confidential.

McCutcheon declined to say if any athletes had failed drug tests this year.

Lappas said the team would miss Anderson's play, but praised his handling of the suspension.

''I know that every game I've coached since I've been here, he's been out there for a lot of minutes,'' Lappas said. ''He's totally on board. I thought he was terrific on the bench. He was more of a coach than a cheerleader (Sunday). He really understands the game and what I want to do as a coach. He was great talking to these guys during time-outs.''
