UMass is at Hub of home schedule
N.E. College Basketball
By Rich Thompson, The Boston Herald, 12/27/2004

UMass coach Steve Lappas will host a Boston invasion at the Mullins Center this week.

The Minutemen are at the halfway point of six straight home games and have prevailed against sixth-ranked UConn, Davidson and Rider. This week's imports are from down the turnpike, qualifying them as natural nonconference rivals.

The Minutemen (5-3) will face defending America East regular season champion Boston University (7-2) tomorrow night followed by Big East power Boston College (9-0) in the Commonwealth Classic Sunday.

Lappas was enjoying last Thursday night's 73-63 win over Rider when he was asked about BU. Lappas admitted he had a lot of background work to do while his players were home for the holidays. The last time UMass played BU, Bruiser Flint's Minutemen won, 68-52, on Dec. 14, 2000.

``All I really know about BU is that they won at Michigan,'' Lappas said. ``They have some great wins, they played BC tough and I know they are a very good team. But I really don't know the specifics about them. I do know they are good. I know that.''

UMass will play the Terriers without senior point guard Anthony Anderson, who will be serving the final game of a three-game suspension for violating team rules. Anderson, a Lynn native, will be back for the BC game. The Minutemen could also be without the services of versatile sixth man Jeff Viggiano, who sprained his right ankle in the second half of the Rider game.

``When you lose Vig it's like losing two guys,'' Lappas said. ``That's because you lose a 4 man and a 3 man so you are losing two very important guys.''

The Terriers followed up a tough loss at the Heights against BC with a win at Michigan and a 62-45 victory over Canisius at Case Gym Thursday. BU coach Dennis Wolff is getting solid production from his two preseason all-conference seniors, forward Rashad Bell and point guard Chaz Carr.

Shaun Wynn's defensive intensity at the 2-guard position and the rapid development of center Kevin Gardner and small forward Etienne Brower have complemented the efforts of Bell and Carr. A Carr vs. Anderson matchup would have been thrilling, but Chris Chadwick is a very adequate replacement for the Minutemen. BU also gained the services of Omari Peterkin in the Canisius game. The 6-foot-8, 264-pound sophomore transferred to BU from Notre Dame and was inactive for the first eight games.

On a side note, former BC and Ohio State coach Jim O'Brien was spotted at courtside of the BU-Canisius game.

Undermanned Minutemen face Terriers
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 12/28/2004

The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team will try to win its third straight game tonight with its two most experienced players watching from the bench.

In addition to senior Anthony Anderson, who will be serving the final game of a three-game suspension, the Minutemen will also be without junior Jeff Viggiano for tonight's 7 p.m. game against Boston University at the Mullins Center. The 6-foot-6 combo forward, who suffered a severely sprained ankle Wednesday against Rider, is currently on crutches and out indefinitely.

The potential debut of freshman Olivier Lamoureux could help fill some of Viggiano's power forward minutes. The 6-foot-9 rookie from Montreal has healed enough from his Achillies injury and could see action tonight.

''He has practiced and he's ready to go,'' said Lappas, who hoped to find minutes for Lamoureux tonight. ''He can not only post up, but he can step out and shoot the perimeter jump shot.''

Chris Chadwick will make his third straight start with Maurice Maxwell and Artie Bowers joining him in a three-guard backcourt. After that, UMass coach Steve Lappas' bench options are limited without Anderson and Viggiano.

Sophomore rookie Lawrence Carrier and senior Brennan Martin both figure to see more minutes. Carrier has been used mostly at power forward this season and Martin is more of a long-range shooting specialist. Both struggle to guard quick or athletic wing players man-to-man.

Maxwell, arguably UMass' best man-to-man perimeter defender is the team's back-up point guard in Anderson's absence. He hopes the cameo is a glimpse into the future. He'll be the Minutemen's only player with any experience at the point next season.

''I want to play the one guard (next year). That's what I played in prep school. This is been a bit of a tune-up to see if I can handle it at this level,'' Maxwell said. ''I want to show (Lappas) that I can handle the pressure and control the team.''

Whoever is playing point guard will be leading the UMass offense against a team that has been hard to score against. BU has given up just 57.3 points per game and has limited foes to just 38.7 percent shooting, including 23.4 percent from 3-point range.

After losing its opener to Holy Cross, BU has won seven of its last eight games, the lone slip-up being an 80-74 loss at undefeated Boston College.

For the second straight season the Terriers have upset Michigan in Ann Arbor, this year winning 63-52. They're 2-0 against the A-10 with wins over Rhode Island and Fordham.

Forward Rashad Bell leads BU in both scoring (15.8 ppg.) and rebounding (5.8 rpg). Point guard Chaz Carr is averaging 15.3 points.

Lappas said his players have a healthy respect for the Terriers.

''They beat Michigan two years in a row. They gave BC all they wanted. Our guys know it's going to be a tough game,'' Lappas said. ''They run their stuff well. They're a good halfcourt defensive team. They like to pressure some, but not the whole game. It's an interesting matchup.''

Lappas said a win would give the Minutemen more momentum heading into Sunday's game against Boston College and the beginning of the Atlantic 10 schedule next week.

''We've won three of our last four and we have a chance to keep this little streak alive at home,'' Lappas said. ''It's an important game.''

NOTES: The game is a homecoming for former Amherst Regional star Ben Coblyn (see related story), who is a freshman for the Terriers.

The game is the 2,000th men's basketball game in school history. UMass is 1,049-950 all-time including 37-29 against BU.

The Minutemen have lost six straight against teams from Massachusetts and seven of its last eight.

UMass is 3-0 in games Chadwick starts.

Men's Basketball Rallies To Defeat Boston University 67-65 on Tuesday Night
Rashaun Freeman records his second-consecutive double-double in the victory
From UMass Athletics, 12/28/2004

AMHERST, Mass. - After trailing by as many as 13 points in the first half, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team rallied to defeat Boston University 67-65 on Tuesday night in the Mullins Center. Sophomore Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.) recorded a double-double to lead the Minutemen and sophomore Art Bowers (Wilmington, Del.) converted a three-point play with 19 seconds remaining to secure the victory.

Bowers hit the game-tying lay-up, a lean-in twister, after forcing a BU turnover at mid-court. Splitting a double-team on the shot, he was fouled and converted the three-point play giving UMass a 66-65 lead.

On the ensuing Terrier possession, freshman center Jeff Salovski (Bristol, Conn.) rejected Shaun Wynn's jumper with five seconds remaining as he curled off a screen at the free throw line. Sophomore Maurice Maxwell (Philadelphia, Pa.) came down with the loose ball and was fouled. He hit one-of-two free throws giving the Minutemen a 67-65 lead with 4.4 seconds remaining.

Chaz Carr's three-point attempt off the mid-court inbounds as time expired went wide.

Freeman led UMass (6-3) with his 16-career double-double with 25 points and 13 rebounds. He was an astounding 13-of-14 from the charity stripe improving to 63.5 percent on the season - up from 55.1 percent entering the game.

Rashad Bell's career-high 27 points led all players in the game. Bell scored 18 of those in the second half as both teams traded points.

The Minutemen trailed at the intermission by nine points, 39-30, but went on a 10-to-0 run to open the second period. The win was the first time in 112 games that UMass had been able to rally from at least a nine-point halftime deficit to win dating back to Jan. 6, 2001 against George Washington. The victory also snapped a 10-game losing streak for the Minutemen when they trailed at halftime.

After starting the game 6-for-6 from the floor, Boston University held a 13-7 lead sparked by Kevin Gardner and Bell who each had four points in the opening four minutes.

A Etienne Brower three-pointer at the 12:33 mark of the half pushed BU's lead to 22-11 over the Minutemen. Brower finished the game with 15 points - all in the first half.

UMass finished the final 1:30 with a 7-to-3 run after Maxwell hit a floating trey from the right wing at the buzzer answering BU's Matt Wolff who had just hit a three of his own with 6.0 seconds remaining.

The Minutemen jumped out of the gates to start the second stanza putting together a 19-to-4 run to take a 49-43 advantage. Freeman and Bowers led the charge with six and five points in that stretch, respectively. UMass took its first lead since leading 5-4 at the 17:59 mark of the first half.

UMass forced 18 BU turnovers on the night converting them into 24 points. The Minutemen converted 24-of-31 free throws, while the Terriers were just 11-of-17 from the stripe.

Massachusetts will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 2 when Boston College visits the Mullins Center for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off. The game will be the fourth of a six-game home stand for the Minutemen. Boston College is undefeated at 9-0 and ranked No. 6 in the most recent RPI.

Notes & Quotes
From UMass Athletics, 12/28/2004

The last time UMass trailed by nine or more at halftime and came back to win was on Jan. 6, 2001, (112 games ago) when they were down 37-25 to George Washington and won 76-60 behind 28 points by Monty Mack.

The last game UMass came back to win after trailing at the half was on Jan. 31, 2004, when the Minutemen were down 30-29 at Rhode Island and won 67-64. UMass had lost 10 straight games which it trailed at halftime.

UMass scored the first 10 points of the second half to rally back from the 39-30 halftime deficit to take at 40-39 lead with 2:30 elapsed in the second half. In that run, Art Bowers had five points in the run.

Rashaun Freeman had 25 points, including 10 in the first half. It was his seventh double-figure game this season and 31st in 38 career games. Freeman had his second straight game of 20 or more points and eighth of his career. It was also his third career game with 25 or more points and first this season.

Freeman also had 13 rebounds for his second straight double-double and third this season and 15th of his career.

Freeman also made a career-high 13 free throws on 14 attempts. It was the best percentage of his career. This came on the heels of an 8-for-15 shooting performance vs. Rider. Also, he was shooting 55.1 percent from the line this season (27-for-49).

Art Bowers continued his hot stretch with his fourth straight game of 10-plus points with 15. He is averaging 16.3 over his last four games after scoring just 7.4 over the first five games. For Bowers, it was his 17th career game in double-figures.

Maurice Maxwell broke out a mini-slump with his first double-figure game in five games with 11. He averaged just 6.3 over his last four games after scoring 14.5 over the first four games.

Freshman Olivier Lamoureux made his collegiate debut entering the game with 10:23 left in the first half. The Montreal native had been hampered by various injuries this season (hernia, shoulder, Achilles).

Freshman Lawrence Carrier made the first free throw of his collegiate career early in the second half as he missed his first five this season.

UMass has now won seven games in a row in the series with BU and leads the all-time series, 38-29.

UMass is in the midst of its longest homestand (six games) in more than 70 years, as the school hosted seven home games in a row in 1930-31 at Drill Hall.

This game vs. Boston University was the 2,000th game in UMass men's basketball history. The Minutemen have an all-time record of 1,050-950 after the game.

UMass will host its 150th game at Mullins Center on Sunday as the Minutemen welcome undefeated Boston College (9-0), which is ranked No. 6 in the most recent RPI.

Looking ahead, head coach Steve Lappas will coach his 500th career game against Temple on Jan. 5 at the Mullins Center.

Other Notes: BU won the opening tap ... Art Bowers canned a three-pointer for the first points of the game just 45 seconds into action ... The teams combined to hit the first eight shots of the game (five by BU and three by UMass, with a pair of field goals by Rashaun Freeman) ... Overall, BU hit its first six shots of the game and eight of its first nine as the Terriers jumped out to a 19-7 lead five minutes into the game ... 13 of the first 14 field goals in the game were assisted, all five by UMass and 8-of-9 for BU ... Maurice Maxwell fourth dunk of the season with five minutes left in the first half ... That was followed by Stephane Lasme's fourth dunk of the season just 30 seconds later ... For BU, Etienne Brower, who came into the game averaging 9.4 points, scored 15 in the first half ... Rashaun Freeman drew his second charge of the season with just over a minute left in the first half ... After Matt Wolff made a trey with six seconds left in the first half, Maurice Maxwell answered with a three-pointer off the glass as time expired ... UMass scored the first 10 points of the second half to take at 40-39 lead with 2:30 elapsed in the second half ... BU had a run of hitting just 5-of-23 shots after starting the game 10-of-13.

Lappas On UMass Win:
I thought that our guys did a terrific job of keeping it cool. We lose guys on fouls and we have guys hurt. I'm really proud of the way our guys played tonight, defensively, and on the glass, especially in the second half because I was really upset at halftime with our rebounding. To have only 12 turnovers in that game was great. At the end of the game we were out there with three sophomores, a freshman and Chris Chadwick (a senior). This team is growing and I think their best basketball is ahead of them.

Lappas On UMass Defensive Play:
We threw everything in our repertoire at them today. Here's a game that let's you know why you practice. We probably played seven or eight defenses in practice. You have to have them in the bag when you need them. It was one of those days that we changed up a lot. I thought we did a great job of pressing and trapping as well.

Lappas On Game Strategy:
We felt we had a great game plan coming in, we scrapped it and that happens. We scrapped the game plan after the first five minutes and never came back to it. Every game is different, today was a game where we had to go with a lot of pressing and trapping.

Maurice Maxwell On The Win:
It felt really good. It was a crazy game. You think about it and you just want to win the game. We knew that would be a tough game and it feels good to get that win.

Freeman On The Season So Far:
Everything we have been through, all the hard practices and working in the summer is paying off because you learn and become a better team. The media doesn't know what we go through. Tonight was rewarding. We go through a lot of sacrifices and that's why we feel so good right now.

Freeman On His Comeback In The Second Half:
I went into halftime puzzled because I was missing shots I have made since I was nine-years-old. My team didn't let me down. They told me, no matter what happens, we are still going to go to you and that's what happened.

Freeman On The Halftime Locker Room Discussion:
The locker room was different than last year. Last year we were yelling at each other, getting down on each other, getting mad about certain things. This year, everytime we get a player hurt or we are down at half, we are sticking together. We knew we had to pick it up tonight.

Bowers, UMass stun BU late
By Rich Thompson, The Boston Herald, 12/29/2004

AMHERST - With the UMass men's basketball team playing the 2,000th game in program history, sophomore guard Art Bowers made sure it was a memorable one.

Bowers stole a pass from Boston University forward Kevin Gardner with 18.8 seconds to play and scored the go-ahead points by converting a three-point play, lifting the Minutemen to a 67-65 win over the Terriers last night before 4,238 at the Mullins Center.

The Terriers, who led by as many as 13 in the first half, appeared to be in an enviable position, inbounding the ball with a 65-63 lead with 21 seconds remaining. But Bowers tied the game with his steal and leaner, drawing a foul on the play. His free throw put UMass in front, 66-65.

After another Terriers turnover, Minutemen forward Maurice Maxwell hit a free throw to put his team in front, 67-65.

Last-second shots by Shaun Wynn and Chaz Carr wouldn't go down for BU (7-3), sealing a third straight win for UMass (6-3).

``I didn't know what was going to happen when the season started,'' said fourth-year UMass coach Steve Lappas. ``No one knows except the man upstairs. But I know one thing - this is the best team I've had since I've been here. That I know. We put it together that way. It's had the experience and it has the talent, and the great thing about these guys is they are still young and have a lot to learn.''

The UMass win overshadowed the effort of Terriers senior center Rashad Bell, who had a game-high 27 points.

Sophomore forward Rashaun Freeman netted 25 points for UMass before fouling out with 59 seconds to go.

The Terriers, who had won two straight with victories over Rhode Island and Michigan, built a nine-point lead at the half, 39-30. But UMass responded by scoring 10 straight points to open the second half.

That wasn't to the liking of Terriers coach Dennis Wolff.

``We got a little scattered in our press break,'' he said. ``We take care of the ball, we move it down and we get fouled, and it's probably a different outcome. We couldn't have been any more inept against that zone.''

Bowers had five points in the second-half surge, connecting on a 3-point shot from the left side and a 12-footer from the right. Maxwell had an old-fashioned three-point play, scoring from down low and drawing a foul. Freeman also had a bucket in the run.

Freeman, who was 3-of-8 from the floor in the first half, picked it up in the second half, hitting all three of his attempts. He also finished 13-of-14 from the foul line, where the Minutemen scored 24 points in all.

``I went into halftime puzzled,'' said Freeman. ``I missed shots that I had made since I was 9. I got down on myself but I picked myself up because the team needed me.''

Bell broke the deep freeze for the Terriers in the second half, getting them on the board 5:02 into the stanza. Bell would catch fire, scoring 17 second-half points.

The Terriers needed them considering teammate Etienne Brower failed to score in the second half after going for 15 first-half points.

Minutemen just in time
Late Bowers play hands Terriers loss
By Marty Dobrow, The Boston Globe Correspondent, 12/29/2004

AMHERST -- Depleted but not defeated, the University of Massachusetts scored a dramatic 67-65 victory over Boston University last night at the Mullins Center.

A gritty effort appeared destined to come up shy when Maurice Maxwell stepped on the endline with 26.5 seconds left and UMass trailing, 65-63. Center Rashaun Freeman was on the bench, having fouled out after a 25-point, 13-rebound game. Starting forward Stephane Lasme was long gone with five fouls. Junior swingman Jeff Viggiano was on crutches with a sprained ankle. Point guard Anthony Anderson, the senior captain, was serving the final game of a three-game suspension.

But with a makeshift lineup, the Minutemen rose to the occasion. Art Bowers came up with the key play, stepping in front of an Etienne Brower crosscourt pass for the steal, then dribbling to the left elbow, spinning, and banking in an off-balance shot as he was fouled. When he canned the free throw, the Minutemen had a 66-65 lead with 18.8 seconds left.

BU's Shaun Wynn then drove into the paint, but UMass freshman Jeff "Big Deli" Salovski swatted his shot away. Maxwell picked up the loose ball and hit one of two free throws with 4.4 seconds left.

When Chaz Carr's desperation 3-pointer came up well short, the Minutemen had themselves their third straight victory and a 6-3 record.

"Our guys did a terrific job of keeping their cool," said UMass coach Steve Lappas. "This team is coming together, and I think their best basketball is in front of them."

Boston University coach Dennis Wolff was left to lament the poor execution by his 7-3 team at the finish.

"We got a little scattered in our press break," he said. "We take care of the ball, we move it down and get fouled, it's probably a different outcome."

The game was up for grabs only because of the huge effort by Freeman. Though he wasn't on the floor at the finish, Freeman essentially willed the Minutemen to this win. At halftime, with UMass trailing, 39-30, he was disappointed with his 10 points and two rebounds.

"I went into halftime puzzled," he said. "I was missing shots I'd been making since I was 9 years old."

In the second half, he came out and hit those shots, and another variety he hadn't really mastered until last night -- free throws. He finished the night 13 for 14 from the line.

"Last year, it was like Hack-a-Shaq," Freeman said about opponents' ability to exploit his struggles from the stripe.

Still, for all Freeman's efforts, it seemed UMass would come up short after Rashad Bell fouled him out with 59.3 seconds left. Bell, who led all scorers with 27 points, hit one of two free throws to give the Terriers a 65-63 lead.

It was the 2,000th game in UMass annals, and there definitely were some historic echoes. The last time these teams met at the Mullins Center (in 1999), then-Minuteman coach Bruiser Flint was serving a self-imposed one-game suspension for using profanity in a postgame news conference. Last night, during the first half, Lappas might have preferred a similar fate as the Terriers, led by Brower (15 points, all in the first half), built a 13-point lead and seemed comfortable at the break with their 9-point edge.

At that point the Minutemen dug deep, making a little history of their own.

UMass pulls off dramatic comeback, Minutemen win third straight
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 12/29/2004

Things didn't look good for the University of Massachusetts after the Minutemen gave up a 12-0 run early in the first half and trailed Boston University by as many as 13. They didn't look good when the Minutemen rallied to lead early in the second half, but then gave away a six-point lead. They sure didn't look good after Rashaun Freeman and Stephane Lasme had both fouled out and Maurice Maxwell stepped on the end line with 26.5 seconds left and UMass down by two. Things didn't look good until Artie Bowers stole a BU pass and completed a three-point play with 18.8 seconds left to spark the Minutemen's 67-65 win over the Terriers Tuesday at the Mullins Center.

After Maxwell's turnover, if BU had gotten the ball across halfcourt the Minutemen would have been forced to foul, giving the Terriers a chance to clinch the game from the line. But Bowers curled back to pick off Etienne Brower's pass near midcourt.

''I saw the ball going in the direction and I just ran,'' said Bowers, who had 15 points, five assists and four steals. ''I got the steal and I just tried to make the shot or get fouled.''

He did both as he drove back to the hoop and tossed up a leaner. The ball fell through the hoop as Shaun Wynn was whistled for the foul. Bowers made the free throw left to put UMass ahead, 66-65.

Wynn drove from the top of the key to the right and turned at the baseline. He found Jeff ''Big Deli'' Salovski waiting for him.

The big Minutemen freshman blocked Wynn's shot. Maxwell grabbed the ball and Matt Wolff fouled him.

Maxwell gave the Terriers hope by missing the first free throw, but he knocked down the second.

BU hurried the ball upcourt and called time out with 1.8 seconds left and drew up a play to give Carr a 3-point try. The shot wasn't close sparking UMass' celebration.

''I'm really proud of the way our guys played tonight,'' Lappas said. ''I think this team is growing and their best basketball is ahead of them.''

The win gave the Minutemen (6-3), who were playing without suspended guard Anthony Anderson and injured forward Jeff Viggiano their first three-game winning streak of the season.

''It was a tough game because we didn't have Ant and we didn't have Vig,'' Maxwell said. ''It feels good to come away with that win.''

UMass led 5-2 1:31 into the game, but BU ran off a 17-2 run that appeared to put the Terriers in control. UMass struggled to contain Etienne Brower, who scored all of his 15 points in the first half.

Matt Wolff's three with seven seconds left put the Terriers ahead by a dozen at 39-27, but Maxwell (11 points) banked in a 3-pointer at the buzzer giving the Minutemen momentum going into the second half.

UMass switched from man-to-man to almost exclusively zone in the second half.

''They changed defenses and we couldn't have been any more inept against that zone,'' BU coach Dennis Wolff said.

While BU struggled to adjust, Freeman (25 points) began to dominate. He grabbed 11 of his 13 rebounds after the break.

''He was a monster on the glass, especially in the second half,'' Lappas said. ''He had two in the first half and I killed him at halftime. In the second half he got every defensive rebound there was.''

Unable to contain Freeman, the Terriers tried fouling him. But Freeman, who entered the game as a 55.1 percent free throw shooter, made 13-of-14 in the game and nine of 10 down the stretch before fouling out.

''I just went into halftime puzzled cause I was missing shots I've been making since I was 9 years old,'' Freeman said. ''But in the second half I picked it up because my team needed me.''

UMass will host Boston College Sunday at 2 p.m.

'Big Deli' delivers in clutch again
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 12/29/2004

After his cameo heroics helped the University of Massachusetts prevail in its season opener over Birmingham Southern, freshman big man Jeff ''Big Deli'' Salovski admitted he didn't want to go in the game when Rashaun Freeman and Stephane Lasme had fouled out. Last night against Boston University, he was ready to answer the call.

Called on to repeat his closer role, Salovski delivered again picking up his second ''save'' in his young career.

In the first game he contributed a rebound and a couple of key free throws. Against BU, Salovski blocked Shaun Winn's shot with six seconds left to help clinch the win.

''When Ray picked up his fourth foul, Jeff Viggiano was sitting next to me on the bench and kept telling me to be ready.''

UMass coach Steve Lappas knew he'd be ready.

''I had no problem putting him in,'' Lappas said. ''He has a great mind for the game. If you tell him to do something he'll go out there and do it.''

LAMOUREUX DEBUTS - After shoulder, hernia and Achillies injuries sidelined him for UMass' first eight games, freshman big man Olivier Lamoureux finally made his debut.

The 6-foot-9 Montreal native played just two minutes and had an otherwise empty stat sheet.

''I thought just getting him out there was good,'' Lappas said. ''He was a step slow which is what you expect. We've practiced for nine weeks and he's practice 10 times, but it was good to get him out there and put him in a game.''

NOTEWORTHY COMEBACK - This was UMass' first win after trailing at halftime since Jan. 31 at Rhode Island.

The last time UMass won after being down by nine or more points at halftime was Jan. 6, 2001 when the Minutemen erased a 37-25 deficit against George Washington and won 76-60.

That win turned the season around as Minutemen won 13 of their final 19 games to finish the year 15-15.

FOUL OUTS - Freeman and Lasme each fouled out for the third time this season. It was the fifth time of Freeman's career and the fourth of Lasme's.

MISCELLANEOUS - The Minutemen went 3-0 during senior Anthony Anderson's three-game suspension.

UMass is 6-3 for the first time since 2001-02. The Minutemen lost their next five games that season.

UMass ended its six-game losing streak against schools from Massachusetts. The Minutemen have won seven straight against BU.

UMass is 4-0 when Chris Chadwick starts this season.

Former Minuteman big man Micah Brand was in attendance.
