Frontcourt test for Minutemen at BC
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/3/2006

AMHERST - The University of Massachusetts frontcourt will face arguably its toughest test of the season tonight when the Minutemen travel to Chestnut Hill to face No. 11 Boston College at 7 p.m. at Conte Forum.

The newest members of the Atlantic Coast Conference have gotten the better of their in-state rivals recently. UMass won the first five Commonwealth Classics, but the Eagles have won the last six games in the rivalry.

''It's a very big game,'' UMass senior Jeff Viggiano said. ''It's always a rivalry with two in-state teams going at it. They've had the upper hand lately and they're one of the top teams in the country, so there's some extra motivation.''

The game pits two of the New England's best big men, although Eagle Craig Smith and Minuteman Rashaun Freeman likely will guard each other only periodically.

The Eagles (10-2) have done a good job containing Freeman in two previous games, holding him to 12 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Smith has averaged 14 points and 8.3 boards against UMass. When the Minutemen play man-to-man, Smith likely be guarded by Stephane Lasme.

''We have to be focused on defense because they don't win games with their guards,'' Freeman said. ''They beat you with their big guys. The way we're going to win is with our defensive presence, playing all out for 40 minutes.''

BC coach Al Skinner, a former UMass forward, is impressed with the Minutemen's big men.

''Their frontcourt continues to improve,'' Skinner said. ''Their frontcourt is as good as any frontcourt that we've faced with the possible exception of Michigan State. That's clearly where their strength is. If you have good frontcourt play, it allows you to stay in games.''

Boston College will try to get the Minutemen in foul trouble. The Eagles have been successful using that strategy against most opponents who have been called for 58 more fouls than BC. The Eagles have shot almost 100 more free throws (272-175) than their opponents.

Most experts picked BC to be one of the few contenders to challenge Duke in the ACC, but the Eagles have been hard to evaluate so far. Their only signature victory came in a 76-68 win over an Oklahoma State team that's a bit down. Their other nine victories came against a collection of lesser opponents.

The two losses are both respectable, however. BC lost to No. 7 Michigan State at Madison Square Garden and at No. 14 Maryland. The Eagles have won four straight, including the last two over Atlantic 10 teams Rhode Island and Duquesne.

Jared Dudley leads the Eagles in both scoring (17.1 points per game) and rebounding (7.9 rebounds per game). He benefited from the extra attention paid to Smith (16.4 points, 7.8 rebounds per game).

''We're still trying to improve, but when you can win ball games while you're still trying to improve you have to be somewhat satisfied,'' Skinner said. ''We haven't been consistent over 40 minutes. When we start to do that, we'll be a consistent basketball team.''

The two forwards could be aided down the stretch by the return of big man Sean Williams. The sophomore shot-blocker was suspended for the first half of the season. But his return adds a shot-blocking presence to an already strong Eagle defense.

''BC will beat you to death. They're a team full of seniors, who are very experienced in a system that takes a while to learn,'' UMass coach Travis Ford said.

Most Boston College opponents try to use some form of zone to slow the Eagles. UMass used a zone effectively in the first half against St. John's Wednesday, but switched out of it because Ford thought his offense was suffering.

Still, Ford said the Minutemen need to have zone available as an option.

''We hadn't worked on our zone in quite awhile,'' he said. ''We need to work on our zone because we're going to need it at times.''

Ford said he had not planned to change his starting lineup, although he hasn't ruled it out either. He said regardless of who starts, his team needed to play more like it did in the second half against St. John's.

''We have to be a blue-collar team. In the first half we were too white-collar. We thought we could just sit back in our little zone,'' Ford said. ''In the second half we became blue collar and went right after them. We need to play that way all the time.''

Skinner said he's seen improvement from UMass over the course of the year.

''They're in transition getting used to a new style. Some nights it has worked for them and others I guess it has not,'' Skinner said. ''We're almost in similar places. We both think we're going to better as the season goes on.''

BC-UMass matchup still has some bounce
By Michael Vega, The Boston Globe Staff, 1/3/2006

Fresh off road wins at Duquesne last Tuesday and at Rhode Island Saturday, the Boston College men's basketball team will wrap up a three-game stretch against Atlantic 10 opponents when the 11th-ranked Eagles (10-2) host the University of Massachusetts (5-4) tonight at 7 at Conte Forum.

''We're just barnstorming through the A-10, what can I tell you?" said BC coach Al Skinner.

Although this intrastate rivalry has lost some of the buzz it had when it was reincarnated as the ''Commonwealth Classic" during the 1995-96 season -- the Eagles have won the past six meetings -- it still matters to those who coach it, play in it, and watch it.

''Obviously, it's not what it used to be, or is not what it was," said BC junior forward Jared Dudley. ''But the Commonwealth Classic is still a game that you want to win. They're needing a big win to try to get the ball rolling and we're trying to get ready for ACC play, so obviously it's two teams that need a win. But we're just excited to be back home."

After losing to Michigan State in the Jimmy V Classic Dec. 6 at Madison Square Garden and at Maryland Dec. 11 in their inaugural Atlantic Coast Conference contest, the Eagles rebounded to win four in a row. Their ranks have grown to a nine-man rotation with the addition of 6-8 sophomore forward Akida McLain and 6-10 sophomore center Sean Williams.

''We're still a work in progress," said Skinner. ''We're happy about some of the things that we're doing, but we also recognize there's some things we've got to get better at -- and the good thing is that we can.

''Guys are trying to get focused and get prepared. An indication of that was, obviously, we shot free throws poorly against Duquesne, but we turned around and shot the ball well at URI."

At Duquesne, the Eagles made only 44 percent of their foul shots (11 of 25), but were much improved at URI, hitting 16 of 20 (80 percent).

''I believe that we're a good free throw shooting team, and for us to struggle like that is an indication of lack of concentration," Skinner said.

The Minutemen, meanwhile, enter the game after finishing runner-up to host St. John's in the Panasonic Holiday Festival at New York. UMass bowed to the Red Storm, 51-49, in the championship game.

''I think we're playing pretty good basketball, but we just have to figure out how to win basketball games -- close games -- and compete at the highest level," said first-year UMass coach Travis Ford. ''We're still looking for consistency on both ends of the court."

The Holiday Festival marked a coming-out party of sorts for junior center Stephane Lasme, who is ranked third nationally in blocked shots (4.8 per game). In a 66-49 rout of St. Peter's in the semifinals, Lasme had 21 points, 14 rebounds (both career highs), and 8 blocked shots. He followed that with a game-high 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots against St. John's.

''We've asked him to step up his offensive performance," Ford said. ''It's something we've needed to give us another scoring option, and he was a great option. He finally took the mentality of a go-to guy."

Ford knows the Minutemen will need all of their offensive options against a BC team he described as ''extremely physical."

''The greatest thing about them is that they know what they're looking for and they usually end up getting it out of their options," Ford said. ''They run their offense and they don't get in hurry. They never panic. They're just a real solid basketball team."

Unlike the University of Connecticut, which seems to have lost interest in extending its series against its oldest New England rival, BC appears intent on playing UMass.

''It matters, and I think it's important to both programs," said Skinner, a UMass Hall of Fame inductee who had his No. 30 retired two years ago at the Mullins Center. ''I know every program wants a national scope, but the fact of the matter is, you can't forget your roots and your background.

''I think BC, as well as UMass, has made an attempt to maintain that, so I think it's important. The history of UMass and BC is important to their alumni and fans."

Said Ford, ''There's almost like a gentlemen's agreement that we're playing every year, which I like. That's the way it should be. Us going against a great school like BC and against a great coach like Al Skinner, who obviously was one of the great players to ever play at UMass, it means a lot to our school to be able to play the game."

Eagles up for UMass
By Rich Thompson, The Boston Herald, 1/3/2006

Boston College will look to complete an Atlantic 10 sweep when the Eagles host UMass tonight (7 p.m.) in the 12th annual Commonwealth Classic at Conte Forum.

The No. 11 Eagles (10-2) return home to Chestnut Hill after scoring easy road wins at Duquesne and Rhode Island. BC moved up two spots on the Associated Press poll yesterday.

As far as the Minutemen (5-4) are concerned, BC represents another tough nonleague opponent after a win (St. Peter’s) and a loss (St. John’s) in the Panasonic Holiday Festival at Madison Square Garden.

BC leads the overall series 21-17 and the Eagles are 6-5 against UMass since the intrastate rivalry was renewed.

In the Eagles’ win over URI, junior guard Sean Marshall led the way with 21 points. Forward Craig Smith, a preseason All-American, and forward Jared Dudley had a combined 31 points and 12 rebounds. Point guard Louis Hinnant registered five assists with no turnovers.

“BC is a very impressive basketball team and it was impressive to see them play,” said UMass first-year head coach Travis Ford. “They play at their own pace. They are not going to get out of their element.”

“They get into a flex offense and they are going to keep on running it until they get the option they want. They are steady and strong and they are probably the most physical team we’ll play to date.

“They have shooters, they have inside players and I don’t see many weaknesses from BC. Coach (Al) Skinner does a terrific job and they have senior leaders which is always good.”

For the BC coach, this is a second straight game against a program where he has roots. Skinner coached for nearly a decade at URI. At UMass, he is 16th on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,235 points and his No. 30 was retired on Feb. 18, 2004.

Early in his tenure at UMass, Ford has transformed the Minutemen from a halfcourt offense to the up-tempo transition game he guided as the starting point guard under Rick Pitino at Kentucky. But the Minutemen have two strong low-post players, Rashaun Freeman and Stephane Lasme, and both were named to the Holiday Festival All-Tournament team. Freeman totaled 19 points and 14 rebounds in the two matches and became the 37th player in UMass history to score 1,000 points.

Boston College (#11) 91, Massachusetts 62
From The Associated Press, 1/3/2006

BOSTON (AP) - Craig Smith scored 17 points and Sean Williams added two skyscraping blocked shots on Tuesday night as No. 11 Boston College beat Massachusetts 91-62 -- the Eagles' sixth straight victory over their cross-state rival.

Playing in just his fourth game since returning from a suspension for a marijuana arrest, Williams had a crowd-pleasing follow-up dunk with 8:36 left for his only points of the game. But it was his first-half block of Rashaun Freeman that electrified the crowd and sparked BC to a 16-6 run that put the game out of reach.

Sean Marshall scored 18 points and Jared Dudley and Tyrese Rice each had 14 apiece to help BC (11-2) win its fifth straight game since losing two in a row. The Eagles resume play in their inaugural Atlantic Coast Conference season on Sunday at Georgia Tech.

Freeman had 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Stephane Lasme had 12 and nine for UMass (5-5). The Minutemen open Atlantic 10 play at Duquesne on Saturday.

UMass led 18-14 with 10:38 left in the first half before BC scored 13 of the next 15 points. Smith scored eight in the run, the last two after Williams picked Freeman's shot out of the air and pinned it against the backboard.

After Freeman made a basket with 5:18 left, Rice hit a 3-pointer for BC. Williams blocked Jeff Viggiano at the other end and then Rice added another 3 to make it 33-22.

In all, BC outscored UMass 27-8 over the last 10:12 of the half.

BC coach Al Skinner was a teammate of Julius Erving at UMass. Skinner's No. 30 was retired when the Eagles played at Amherst in 2004.

BC and UMass, separated by about two hours, rarely played until the Commonwealth Classic was created in 1995. The Minutemen were led by NBA prospect Marcus Camby when they won the first game at the FleetCenter with then-Gov. Bill Weld looking on; UMass won the next four years as well.

But interest waned and after four years the game moved to campus sites. The Minutemen have also fallen on hard times and haven't earned the state's bragging rights since the 1999-2000 season.

Post-Game Notes
From UMass Athletics, 1/3/2006

Boston College went on a 24-4 run midway through the first half, as the Eagles rallied from an 18-14 deficit with 11:10 left to build a lead as large as 38-22 with 2:14 left in the first half. The run was keyed by back-to-back three-pointers by Tyrese Rice and another by Sean Marshall.

* Rashaun Freeman reached double-figures for the eighth time in 10 games this season and 55th time in 67 career games. He now has 1,033 career points to stand in a tie for 34th all-time at UMass. with Derick Claiborne.

* Freeman also grabbed 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season and 24th of his career.

* Stephane Lasme scored in double-figures for the third game in a row and sixth time this season in 10 games with 12.

* Brandon Thomas broke out a recent slump with his first double-figure game since Nov. 28, spanning five games. He tallied 12 in the loss. Thomas has been in double-figures four times this season and 19 in his career.

* Brandon Thomas scored the first field goal for UMass for the fifth time in 10 games this season.

Eagles are at full throttle vs. UMass
By Michael Vega, The Boston Globe Staff, 1/4/2006

You could almost hear the engines revving. You could almost see the offense shifting into fourth gear, the defensive pressure going into overdrive.

You could sense that Boston College was firing on all cylinders, especially now that it has a full complement of players coming off the bench.

The 11th-ranked Eagles seemed prepared for the grind of their inaugural run in the Atlantic Coast Conference after posting a convincing 91-62 triumph over the University of Massachusetts last night in the 11th Commonwealth Classic before a Conte Forum crowd of 8,162.

BC (11-2) collected the Governor's Cup for the sixth consecutive time, recording its most lopsided victory of those six triumphs over UMass (5-5).

''I think we're rolling now," said junior forward Sean Marshall, who led five BC players in double figures with 18 points on 7-for-12 shooting (4 of 7 from the 3-point arc). ''We haven't had our whole team practicing the whole year, so it's a perfect time for us to get rolling heading into ACC play against Georgia Tech on Sunday."

Bolstered by a bench that outscored the UMass reserves, 31-9, the Eagles put this game -- their third win in a row against an Atlantic 10 opponent -- out of reach with a 24-4 run in the first half that led to a comfortable 41-26 halftime lead.

Craig Smith, who yesterday became the first BC player to earn ACC Player of the Week honors, had 17 points on 7-for-12 shooting and 4 rebounds while Jared Dudley and Tyrese Rice each had 14 points (5 of 7 from the 3-point arc). Akida McLain came off the bench to chip in 10 points, punctuating the victory with a thunderous dunk with 10.9 seconds to go.

Williams had 2 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots before he fouled out with 4:32 to go.

After James Life drilled a 3-pointer that gave UMass its biggest lead of the game, 18-14, Smith answered with back-to-back baskets (a fadeaway baseline hook and a dunk off a crisp entry pass from Rice) to tie the game, 18.

''He's a physical beast who gets to where he wants to get and does what he wants to do," UMass coach Travis Ford. ''We couldn't do anything with him."

McLain hustled after a loose ball at midcourt and got held by UMass freshman guard Chris Lowe as he attempted to make a break for the basket. McLain hit both foul shots for a 20-18 lead.

Playing in just his fourth game since his Dec. 22 reinstatement, Williams sparked the Eagles when he entered the game for Smith with 8:43 to go in the half. He spotted up for an open jumper, then fired a bullet pass into the low post to Marshall for an easy layup that made it 23-20.

Williams made his presence felt on defense and ignited the crowd by soaring above the rim to pin a putback by UMass's Rashaun Freeman (18 points) against the glass. That led to a pretty baseline hook by Smith at the other end for a 27-20 lead.

''Craig told me to go get one and I just went up there and tried to get it," Williams said. ''I hope someone [got] a picture of it."

Freeman answered with a putback to pull UMass within 27-22, but the Eagles closed out their run with an 11-0 spurt. Rice knocked down back-to-back treys from far behind the 3-point arc, and they were followed by another deep trifecta from Marshall for the 15-point lead at the break.

The Eagles never looked back in the second half, as the Minutemen pulled no closer than 12 (45-33) on Stephane Lasme's putback with 17:41 to go in the game.

''This is a different team that played against Maryland, that's for sure," said BC coach Al Skinner, referring to a 73-71 setback in College Park, Md., Dec. 11. ''I think our guys are feeling a little more comfortable now. I like the improved play of Tyrese and Marquez [Haynes]. Obviously, Akida and Sean [Williams] are going to help.

''We're still a work in progress, but it's clear that we're improving. If we're going to have success in this league, we're going to have to get better. As I told them in the locker room, 'The real season is about to start.' "

A Classic for Eagles
By Rich Thompson, The Boston Herald, 1/4/2006

The Governor’s Cup was reduced to a symbolic piece of window dressing for Boston College.

The No. 11 Eagles made a clean sweep of Atlantic 10 opponents by walloping UMass, 91-62, in the 11th annual Commonwealth Classic last night at Conte Forum.

BC (11-2) has won six straight Commonwealth Classic clashes against UMass (5-5) and seven straight overall against the Minutemen.

The Eagles waxed A-10 squads Duquesne and Rhode Island in similar fashion last week.

The Eagles now must concentrate their collective energy back on the Atlantic Coast Conference beginning Sunday, when they play at Georgia Tech and must deal with the bulk of their league schedule.

BC lost at Maryland, 73-71, in its ACC debut Dec. 11, but the Eagles were without their full roster.

“We are ready to roll and see what this ACC is all about,” said preseason All-American Craig Smith, who yesterday was named ACC Player of the Week. “We got one ‘L’ which we should have won and that’s behind us. We are ready to roll in ACC play.”

The Eagles have won five straight since losing to the Terrapins. Along the way, BC has scored at least 80 points every game except for the 78-56 win at URI. The Eagles are a stronger squad with the return of suspended players Sean Williams and Akida McLain, and both have seen their minutes escalate.

BC coach Al Skinner is certainly more confident about venturing into the uncharted waters of the ACC with the roster he has now.

“I told the kids in the locker room the real season is about to start,” Skinner said. “This is a different team than (the one that) played against Maryland, that’s for sure, and I think our guys are feeling a little more comfortable now.

“Obviously Akida and Sean are going to help. We are a work-in-progress, but it’s clear we are improving. If we are going to have success in this league, we are going to have to get better.”

The Minutemen didn’t provide much of a tuneup for the Eagles. UMass jumped to an 18-14 lead with 10:38 left in the first half as center Rashaun Freeman, Stephane Lasme and Brandon Thomas did the bulk of the work. Freeman finished with a team-best 18 points as Lasme and Thomas each had 12.

UMass attempted fullcourt pressure, which was rendered useless when Skinner went with a smaller lineup. The game devolved into a rout as the Eagles embarked on a 24-4 run into halftime. Smith’s baby hook on the baseline followed by an angry dunk sparked the run. UMass coach Travis Ford could do nothing to stop Smith, who scored 17 with an array of low post moves.

“He’s a man, he’s a physical beast that gets where he wants to get and does what he wants to do,” Ford said. “We couldn’t do anything with him.”

Shooting guard Sean Marshall hit 7-of-12 shots to lead the Eagles with 18 points, while small forward Jared Dudley had 14. Skinner got huge production off the bench from Tyrese Rice (14 points) and McLain (10), while Williams provided two stunning blocks and superb defense.

The BC bench outscored the UMass bench, 31-9.

Williams jumps to it
By Rich Thompson, The Boston Herald, 1/4/2006

Boston College center Sean Williams didn’t make a favorable impression in the box score of last night’s 91-62 pasting of UMass in the 11th annual Commonwealth Classic at Conte Forum.

Williams played 10 minutes, had two points and three rebounds before fouling out with 4:52 remaining.

But he was the defensive force behind the Eagles’ 24-4 first-half run that put the game away. Missing the first seven games after being suspended from school for marijuana possession, Williams is the shot blocker the Eagles will need in the ACC. He pinned a shot by UMass center Rashaun Freeman against the glass at 5:57 and later smacked a Jeff Viggiano floater from the court.

The two blocks don’t take into account the number of shots Williams altered by his presence.

“That was the wake-up call,” BC forward Craig Smith said. “That’s when we said, ‘Let’s run these guys, let’s finish them off.’ They got off to a strong start and we needed to put them away. It’s great to have him back there. It’s great for any team to have a shot-blocking presence like him.”

The 6-foot-10 Williams helps take the defensive and rebounding pressures away from Smith and Jared Dudley with his size and leaping ability.

“Craig just told me to go get one and I did,” Williams said. “The blocks seem to pick up my team and give them energy and I’m going to continue to do them.”

Eagles crush UMass
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/4/2006

CHESTNUT HILL - Boston College has been inconsistent at times this season, but the University of Massachusetts Tuesday saw the best of the Eagles who crushed the Minutemen 91-62 at Conte Forum.

For the first 10 minutes of the game, UMass looked like it might stay with the No. 11-ranked Eagles. The Minutemen were effective offensively and their zone seemed to be slowing BC. UMass took an 18-14 lead after three offensive rebounds kept possession alive long enough for James Life to make a 3-pointer with 10 minutes, 39 seconds left in the half. The play briefly quieted the 8,162 fans at Conte Forum, but it seemed to ignite Craig Smith.

Boston College (11-2) put its entire offensive arsenal on display in a 24-4 run. Smith, who hadn't scored until then, had 10 during the run, including a dunk on Rashaun Freeman that ignited the Eagle fans. BC extended its advantage to 41-26 at halftime and the Minutemen never got the deficit under 10 again.

'He's a man. He's a physical beast,' UMass coach Travis Ford said of Smith. 'He gets to where he wants to get and does what he wants to do.'

The Eagles ended any suspense when they stretched their lead to 20 five minutes into the second half.

Freeman led UMass with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Brandon Thomas broke out of his mini-slump with 12 points. Stephane Lasme added 12 points, nine rebounds and two blocks.

Sean Marshall led BC with 18 points, while Smith added 17. Tyrese Rice and Jared Dudley had 14 each.

UMass (5-5) stays on the road as it begins Atlantic 10 play at Duquesne at 2 p.m. Saturday in Pittsburgh.

Trailing BC by a considerable margin for most of the second half, Ford got a long look at two players in new positions.

Thomas got his first experience playing point, while sophomore Lawrence Carrier moved from the block to the wing.

Ford called Thomas a potential point guard option when he signed in the spring and tried him there in the preseason. Dissatisfied, Ford moved Thomas to the wing, a more natural spot for him. But with Maurice Maxwell struggling at point guard, Ford tried Thomas there. He finished with four turnovers and no assists.

'For the past week or so we've been playing him there in practice,' Ford said. 'He was OK.'

'It wasn't that difficult a transition,' Thomas said. 'It felt good to run the offense and lead the team on the break.'

Freshman point guard Chris Lowe played a season-low 10 minutes.

Clearly irritated after the game, Ford's only praise was for Carrier, who had two points and five rebounds in 17 minutes.

The 6-foot-8 sophomore returned to action after he did not play in both Panasonic Holiday Festival games last week in New York City despite being healthy. Carrier entered the game as a small forward after playing almost exclusively at power forward previously.

'Lawrence gave us energy,' Ford said. 'He gives us some offense. He just needs to get in better shape, which is what I've been saying all along.'

Bowers bound for Drexel and Flint
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/4/2006

CHESTNUT HILL _There is still paperwork to be worked out, but it looks like a former University of Massachusetts guard is going to be playing for an ex-Minuteman coach.

Artie Bowers, the guard who left the team after two games this season, is expected to enroll at Drexel where he would play for former UMass coach Bruiser Flint. Bowers then will have the unique experience of playing for each of the last three Minuteman coaches - Travis Ford, Steve Lappas and Flint.

The UMass connection between Bowers and Flint is coincidental. Flint was in his second year at the Philadelphia school when Bowers joined Lappas' team. Flint is not allowed to comment on Bowers until he begins classes at Drexel later this month.

Bowers will have to sit out the remainder of this season and the first semester of the 2006-07 season. He will have 1 1/2 years of eligibility remaining beginning in late December 2006.

Bowers of Wilmington, Del., arrived at UMass as a high-profile recruit after being ranked among the nation's top 50 seniors coming out of St. Benedict's in New Jersey. He was named to the Atlantic 10 all-rookie team after averaging 9.6 points per game as a freshman. Coming off an erratic sophomore season, Bowers started the first two games of this season under Ford, but didn't score in 20 minutes.

Coincidentally the scholarship now available at UMass could go to a former AAU teammate of Bowers. Among other players, Ford has looked at guard Jamual Warren, who played with Bowers for Playaz in AAU.

Warren's nomadic high school career landed him at Holyoke High School, Springfield Cathedral, Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, Milford (Conn.) Academy and Paterson (N.J.) Catholic. He's currently at Globe Tech, a junior college in New York City.

SKINNER vs. UMASS - Boston College coach Al Skinner improved to 9-21 against his alma mater, but he's won seven straight and is 7-2 against UMass with the Eagles.

FREEMAN CHARTS - UMass junior big man Rashaun Freeman moved into a tie for 34th place with Derick Claiborne on the career scoring list. Freeman's 18 points gave him 1,033, passing Tim Edwards (1,022). Next up is David Brown (1,037).

NEXT UP - The Minutemen begin Atlantic 10 play at 2 p.m. Saturday at Duquesne. The Dukes, who play La Salle at noon today, have struggled at 2-9, including a last-place finish in their own Holiday Tournament last week.

MISCELLANEOUS - Stephane Lasme debuted a new hair style for the game, letting out his corn rows for a Pedro Martinez look.

UMass president Jack Wilson and Amherst chancellor John Lombardi were in attendance, sitting behind the Minuteman bench. ... Former Minuteman point guard Anthony Anderson also was at the game. He's leaving later this month to play professionally in Portugal.

UMass is 0-4 in its maroon uniforms this season.
