ITTSBURGH, Pa. - After taking a 42-31 halftime lead, UMass opened the second half with a 15-to-4 run en route to an 82-63 win at Duquesne on Saturday afternoon in the Palumbo Center. UMass' size in the paint proved too much for the Dukes as the Minutemen scored 46 points in the paint compared to just 30 for Duquesne.
Juniors Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.) and Stephane Lasme (Libreville, Gabon) led the way with 20 and 19 points, respectively. Freeman moved up to a 30th-place tie all-time in UMass history with 1,053 career points, while Lasme has scored double-figures in the last four-consecutive games.
That inside duo helped UMass shoot 55.4 percent from the floor going 31-of-56 for the game. The Minutemen also heled a 38-to-28 rebounding advantage.
UMass won its first A-10 conference opener since 1998-99 on Saturday. UMass last won a conference debut against Virginia Tech, 55-40 on Jan. 5, 1999. The Minutemen had lost six straight A-10 openers.
The Minutemen (6-5, 1-0 Atlantic 10) did not allow a Duquesne second half field goal until 10 minutes and 25 seconds into the period pushing their lead to 21 points, 61-40, with 9:35 remaining in the game. All of the Dukes (2-11, 0-2) points to that point were on seven free throws.
UMass jumped out to an 8-0 lead to start the game and never looked back. UMass took leads twice of 11 points in the first half, but the Dukes managed to trim the lead to just three, 30-27, on a pair of Aaron Jackson free throws.
Lasme led all players in the opening frame with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting, while Freeman added 10 on 4-for-5 shooting from the floor. Size was the early advantage for the Minutemen who scored 24 points in the paint while limiting the Dukes to just 16 in the first half.
Four players scored in double figures for UMass as James Life (Fort Myers, Fla.) and Brandon Thomas (San Antonio, Texas) added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Thomas, who started at point guard also added four assists and did not turn the ball over.
It was UMass' largest win against a conference team since an 85-59 win over Fordham on Feb. 3, 2001 at the Mullins Center. It was the largrest conference road since a 78-46 at Rhode Island on Jan. 30, 2001.
The Minutemmen will return to the Mullins Center on Wednesday, Jan. 11 to face Saint Joseph's at 8:00 p.m. The game will be televised on CN8.
Mass won its first A-10 conference opener since 1998-99 with the 82-63 win over Duquesne on Saturday. UMass last won a conference debut against Virginia Tech, 55-40 on Jan. 5, 1999. * It was the largrest conference road since a 78-46 at Rhode Island on Jan. 30, 2001.
* Rashaun Freeman (20 points) scored more than 20 points for the fourth time this season and 16th time in his career. He was in double-figures for the ninth time in 11 games this season and 55th time in his career in 68 games.
* Freeman is now tied for 30th in career scoring at UMass after tallying 20 against Duquesne as he has 1,053. He passed Derick Claiborne (1,033), David Brown (1,037), Charlton Clarke (1,041), Dana Dingle (1,043) and tying Alex Eldridge (1,053).
* Stephane Lasme tallied 19 points in the game for his fourth straight in double-figures. He had four total games in double-figures in his first two seasons with UMass.
* Lasme scored 10 points in the first 10:00 of the game for his seventh double-figure game this season. He had just four games with 10 or more points in his first two seasons at UMass. Lasme had 13 points in the first half before leaving with foul trouble.
* In his return to Pittsburgh, Dante Milligan tallied a career-high nine points. He had scored seven in his first game with UMass against Siena (12/23). He also had six rebounds.
* Brandon Thomas scored the first field goal for UMass again, marking the sixth time in 11 games this season.
* Thomas was into double-figures for the second game in a row and fifth time this season.
* UMass shot a season-high 55.4 from the floor, it was the best since shooting 57.1 from the floor vs. Florida State last season.
* UMass was sensational from two-point range all afternoon making 26-of-40 while they made just 5-of-16 from beyond the 3-point arc.
* UMass shot 57.7 in the first half, making 15-of-26 including 12-of-18 from two-point range in the first half .
* Duquesne was held without a field goal for a stretch of 11:04 from 52 seconds left in the first half until 9:48 was left in the game. They missed 11 field goals in a row.
assachusetts forward Dante Milligan stood outside a locker room following an 82-63 victory over Duquesne and talked about his fallen hero.
"I want to keep his name honored," Milligan said, "every day."
The Pitt transfer is playing for the memory of his late brother, Alonzo Milligan, who was killed during a random shooting in East Harlem last June.
While most college players were playing in summer-time pick-up leagues and getting ready for the 2005-06 season, Milligan buried his only brother, 19-year-old "Zo."
The 6-foot-9 Milligan honors his younger brother with "RIP Zo" written on his sneakers, and with a steady, focused effort on the basketball court.
"I write his name on my shoes to keep him on my mind and in my thoughts," Milligan said, "and by playing as best as I can."
Junior center Rashaun Freeman and junior forward Stephane Lasme combined for 39 points on 16-of-22 shooting at Palumbo Center, as Duquesne (2-11, 0-2) lost its fifth in a row.
Freeman made 9 of 13 for 20 points, along with a game-high eight rebounds. Lasme converted 7 of 9 for 19 points and four rebounds.
"Defensively, we could never get an answer for them around the basket," Duquesne coach Danny Nee said. "They shot high percentage and drew fouls. Coach (Travis) Ford did a nice job. Everything was aimed at going inside and getting them the ball. I would do the same thing."
Duquesne fell behind, 8-0, early and trailed the entire game. Massachusetts (6-5, 1-0) led, 42-31, at halftime and built the lead to as many as 25 points in the second half.
Bryant McAllister scored a team-high 19 points, going 13 for 15 from the line for the Dukes. But most of the points came after the outcome was settled. The senior guard didn't manage his first field goal of the second half until 1:48 remained in the game, when Duquesne trailed, 79-56.
Sophomore center Sean McKeon scored a career-high 11 points to go with four assists, and senior guard Adam Souply matched his career-high with five points in 16 minutes.
Massachusetts only blocked four shots -- it is second in the nation at 8.7 per game -- but the 6-9 Freeman and 6-8 Lasme forced Duquesne to alter its shots.
"It really affected our shooting," Nee said.
Massachusetts' halftime lead came after junior guard James Life's buzzer-beater 3-pointer. The Dukes missed their first nine shots of the second half, and by the time McKeon scored a bucket with 9:44 to play, Duquesne trailed, 59-38. The Dukes never got to within 18 the rest of the way.
Milligan finished with nine points, six rebounds, one block and one steal in 22 minutes off the bench. This was his first trip back to Pittsburgh since transferring from the Panthers one year ago. Milligan, who left Pitt because of a lack of playing time, became eligible last month.
"It was a weird feeling," he said. "Once I got to the airport, it started to bring back some memories. I'm just glad we came here and accomplished what we came to do."
Milligan's transfer and off-season surgery weren't important when his mother, Ruby, called and told him "Zo" had been shot returning from a baby shower. They spent 30 hours in a New York City hospital before Alonzo, studying at a Manhattan community college and working to become a disc jockey, died.
"It's been a tough transition because he was the only kid that was at home," Milligan said. "He was always around to help my mom. He was my only brother. He was always there for me."
Milligan has played in five games at Massachusetts, averaging 3.8 points and 6.0 rebounds.
"It's kind of like a roller-coaster ride so far," he said. "Today, I did OK. But I could have done better."
nother basketball game. Another loss for the Duquesne Dukes. Only the name of the opponent changes.

Massachusetts (6-5, 1-0) was led by center Rashaun Freeman's 20 points and 8 rebounds and forward Stephane Lasme's 19 points, 4 rebounds and 3 blocks.
Dante Milligan, a 6-foot-9 sophomore transfer from the University of Pittsburgh who became eligible five games ago, contributed nine points and six rebounds in 22 minutes.
"It was a weird feeling [coming back to Pittsburgh.] At the airport, it brought back a lot of memories, a lot of mixed emotions," he said. "I think I played OK, but I've been out for almost two years and I have a long way to go. My role is definitely a lot bigger than it was at Pitt. I'm glad I made the decision to move on.
"I never got a chance at Pitt."
The Minutemen played their first game without junior guard Maurice Maxwell, who was suspended from the team for failing to meet athletic department academic standards. He started the first 10 games and averaged 6.5 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists. His absence wasn't felt against Duquesne (2-11, 0-2), which lost its fifth consecutive game and is headed to its 12th consecutive losing season and 19th in the past 20.
Duquesne was led by Bryant McAllister, who maintained his season scoring average of 18.4 by scoring many of his 19 points long after the outcome had been decided. The only other player in double-digit scoring was redshirt sophomore Sean McKeon with a career-high 11 points to go with 4 assists and 3 rebounds.
"I thought McKeon had a couple really good minutes," Duquesne coach Danny Nee said. "There's another level of effort and another level of execution we can ask from our players. A couple people checked out on us. We had three people play 12 or more minutes in the first half without a rebound."
Nee was talking about McAllister, Chauncey Duke and Keith Gayden.
After watching the Dukes quickly fall behind by 11 points in the first half as Massachusetts shredded their man-to-man defense with a heavy dose of layups and dunks, Nee made a key move.
He switched to a zone that changed the tempo, eliminated many of the reach-in fouls by Duquesne's players who were a step behind the play guarding a man and forced the Minutemen to work the ball patiently around the perimeter for a long jumper.
Duquesne cut its deficit to 30-27 on Aaron Jackson's slashing lay-in and free throw with 4:11 left before intermission.
"It looked effective for a while, but it was like holding the dike back," Nee said. "Defensively, we never could get an answer."
Massachusetts scored five unanswered points in the final 28 seconds of the half to take a 42-31 lead into the locker room. Duquesne didn't make a field goal the first 10:16 of the second half as Massachusetts stretched its lead to 60-41.
Notes
Duquesne senior guard Adam Souply, a walk-on the past three years from Frazier High School who received a scholarship this season, scored his first two points of the season with a driving left-handed layup through traffic in the first half. He finished with five points to tie his career high and had a career-best four assists. He had attempted just three shots from the field in 40 minutes before this game. ... Duquesne redshirt freshman forward Brian Kelly had three stitches put in his lower lip following a cut in the first half. He returned the second half wearing uniform No. 21. His No. 13 was splattered with blood.
ITTSBURGH - Duquesne proved to be just what the doctor ordered for the reeling University of Massachusetts men's basketball team. A late first-half surge catapulted the Minutemen to an 82-63 rout Saturday in their Atlantic 10 opener at the Palumbo Center.
The win ended a two-game losing streak for UMass (6-5, 1-0 A-10) and was its first this season outside the Mullins Center or Madison Square Garden.
The Minutemen return home to face Saint Joseph's at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
After a week that saw the Minutemen get trounced 91-62 at Boston College and lose starting point guard Maurice Maxwell to an academic suspension, winning convincingly felt good.
'We needed that win, especially after the Boston College game,' junior big man Stephane Lasme said. 'I really wanted to win that game. My freshman year we lost here and I really wanted to come back strong.'
UMass coach Travis Ford agreed.
'We needed a win and more than winning I told our team we needed to respond better than we did from our last performance,' he said. 'We have been very businesslike the past few days. There hasn't been a lot of joking around or fooling around and I think you saw a little bit of that execution early in the game.'
The frontcourt took over for UMass which had its backcourt thinned without Maxwell. Duquesne could not slow junior big men Rashaun Freeman and Lasme who combined for 39 points. Freeman led the Minutemen with 20 points and eight rebounds. Lasme added 19 points, including an impressive windmill dunk, four rebounds and three blocked shots.
'It didn't take a genius to see what we were trying to do early in the game and it worked,' Ford said. 'That's our strength. We have to play inside to out. We got into our offense early in the game and we ran our offense. We want to force-feed (the post), literally. When they're executing, it's going to make our team better.'
In his first game as the Minutemen's starting point guard, Brandon Thomas had 10 points, four assists and no turnovers. James Life added 11 points, including three 3-pointers.
Duquesne cut an 11-point UMass lead to three late in the first half, but the Minutemen scored the last five points of the half, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Life, to lead 42-31 at intermission.
UMass stretched its lead to 20 just over five minutes into the second half and cruised from there. Duquesne didn't have a field goal until 10:15 after intermission.
Bryant McAllister scored 19 points to lead Duquesne (2-11, 0-2 A-10).
With Maxwell gone, Ford tried different combinations on defense. Jeff Viggiano guarded McAllister early, but came out with two quick fouls. Lasme, who had been dominant early, joined him on the bench with two whistles of his own.
Ford mixed and matched, playing Life and Thomas on McAllister some while using significant amount of zone, especially when Lawrence Carrier was in the game. The sophomore forward turned in one of his most effective efforts with six points and five rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench.
'When you lose a guy like Maurice Maxwell you lose a lot defensively. Losing Maurice is a big blow,' Ford said. 'We can't fool ourselves. We need to have other guys step up their games. It's going to be a process. It's good to get a win through all the stuff we've been through.'

ITTSBURGH - After getting his first experience at point guard in garbage time Tuesday at Boston College, University of Massachusetts junior Brandon Thomas played the position in prime time Saturday.
Thomas replaced suspended teammate Maurice Maxwell in the starting lineup, sliding from shooting guard to the point. While Thomas has plenty to learn, his 10-point, four-assist and no turnover outing seemed to be a step in the right direction.
''He's still learning. It's not natural for him to be a point guard, but he's doing a great job,'' said junior big man Stephane Lasme.
''He's really holding it down until Chris Lowe comes into the game,'' UMass coach Travis Ford said. ''I thought Brandon did a terrific job because he had to do something he's not comfortable doing. He did a great job of responding.''
Ford said playing point guard might help keep Thomas staying with his strengths offensively.
''Brandon is more of a catch-and-shoot guy that needs to get straight-line drives to the basket. He gets in trouble when he starts trying to create too much,'' Ford said. ''We thought the point guard position might be good because he might try to just run the offense and not worry about getting shots, which he did.''
Thomas thought he got better as the game progressed.
''I was a little nervous because it's a totally new position, because I haven't played it all year or most of my career. Once it started flowing I felt more comfortable,'' he said.
While Thomas is starting at the point, he will still play plenty of shooting guard when freshman point guard Lowe comes into the game. He said Lowe has helped him learn the position.
''He's the true point guard on this team so I try to take after him a little bit,'' Thomas said. ''He helps me out. We help him with the leadership. As far as being a point guard I definitely look up to him.''
LINEUPS - Ford employed his third starting lineup of the year as junior James Life replaced the suspended Maxwell. Seven of the 10 scholarship players who have dressed for the Minutemen this season have started at least one game.
MILLIGAN'S RETURN - Sophomore forward Dante Milligan returned to Pittsburgh for the first time since transferring to UMass. Milligan redshirted as a freshman and played just five games last year at Pittsburgh before leaving for UMass.
Milligan had nine points and six rebounds Saturday in his fifth game as a Minuteman.
FREEMAN CLIMBING - Junior big man Rashaun Freeman continued his climb up the school's career scoring charts. His 20 points gave him 1,053 career points, leapfrogging him from No. 34 into a tie for No. 30 with Alex Eldridge. Freeman passed Derick Claiborne (1,033), David Brown (1,037), Charlton Clarke (1,041) and Dana Dingle (1,043).
The game was the 16th in Freeman's career and the fourth this season with 20 or more points. He's been in double figures in 55 of 68 career games.
LASME SCORING - Lasme, who had only four double-figure scoring games in his first two collegiate seasons, has scored 10 or more in four straight games and seven overall this season.
NEXT UP - The Minutemen return to the Mullins Center at 8 p.m. Wednesday when they will try to end an eight-game losing streak against Saint Joseph's. The Hawks, who edged Temple 59-57 Sunday, are 6-5 overall and 1-1 in the Atlantic 10.
MISCELLANEOUS - Thomas has scored UMass' first basket in six of the Minutemen's 11 games.
Pittsburgh Pirate general manager and UMass alum Dave Littlefield was in attendance.
UMass is 2-4 in televised games this season. ... The win snapped the Minutemen's two-game losing streak at the Palumbo Center.
