UMass seeks end to Hawks' mastery
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/11/2006

AMHERST - During practice Tuesday, University of Massachusetts coach Travis Ford asked his players who had been part of a Minuteman team that had beaten Saint Joseph's.

No hands went up. The current Minutemen were in high school, or in Chris Lowe's case middle school, the last time the Minutemen beat the Hawks on March 9, 2001. The eight-game streak is UMass' longest against any conference foe.

''They've pretty much had their way with us,'' said Jeff Viggiano, who gets his last regular-season shot at the Hawks at 8 tonight at the Mullins Center. ''It would be nice to beat them for the first time, the last time.''

Ford said a long losing streak to one team can be motivator or a mental block.

''St. Joe's has been the dominant team in this league and they've definitely had UMass' number the past couple years,'' Ford said. ''You can use that as a motivating factor or you can let it deflate you. It's all in how you look at it.''

The Hawks have managed to stay among the Atlantic 10's elite despite losing three players now in the NBA in the past two seasons.

They will arrive in Amherst at 6-5 (1-1 A-10), with a win over Kansas and losses to an impressive collection of teams including Ohio State, Bucknell, Gonzaga, Davidson and Xavier.

St. Joe's coach Phil Martelli said his team has yet to find a rhythm.

''We've been consistent in our inconsistency. I think we're very fortunate to be 1-1 (in the A-10). We'd sure like to be 2-0. You hate to give away home games, but Xavier came in and took it from us'' with a 62-58 win Jan. 4, said Martelli.

He has said he will call every offensive play and defensive set the rest of the season. ''With this team, if I'm not directing it, we lose a certain level of accountability. Things can be haphazard or aimless.''

Martelli said the hawks will need to be tougher against the Minutemen.

''We have to become more physical. We have to get more of the 50-50 balls,'' he said. ''(Stephane) Lasme and (Rashaun) Freeman kill you in the lane if you don't have a physical nature to your team.''

Ford said he wants his team to look at tonight as an opportunity.

''St. Joe's is going to be one of the top teams in this league,'' Ford said. ''I told our team this would be a good win because when it's said and done (Saint Joseph's) is going to finish high. We need to take advantage of opportunities like this, especially being at home.''

UMass Extends Home Win Streak To Nine With 68-58 Win Over Saint Joseph's
Minutemen snap eight-game Hawk win streak in series
From UMass Athletics, 1/11/2006

AMHERST, Mass. - Entering Wednesday's game against Saint Joseph's, head coach Travis Ford and the UMass men's basketball team knew they would need a strong defensive performance against the Atlantic 10's top three-point shooting team. Holding the Hawks to just 4-for-25 from long range, UMass defeated Saint Joseph's 68-58 at the Mullins Center in front of an energetic 4,122 fans.

The two squads were nearly opposite each other in three-point shooting coming into the game as the Hawks shot a steady 41.8 percent from behind the line and UMass ranked 13th shooting 29.6 percent. But tonight, the stats were flipped and despite a slow start the Minutemen were able to pull away in the second half en route to the win.

Junior Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.) led all scorers with 19 points and his lay-up and free throw with 5:37 remaing in the the game provided UMass its largest lead of the night, 55-41. His play in the second half, 14 points scored, was a major reason UMass (7-5, 2-0 A-10) was able to extend its home winning streak to nine straight and pick up its first win against the Hawks in nine games.

The Hawks (6-6, 1-2 A-10) started the game strongly taking a 6-0 lead out of the gate, but the Minutemen battled back taking their first lead of the game 16-13 on Milligan's first three-pointer of the season. UMass played ferocious defense for the remainder of the first half, holding a normally strong three-point shooting Saint Joseph's team, to just 2-for-10 from long range. The teams went into the break deadlocked at 23-23.

The Minutemen took control of the game on a three-pointer by James Life (Fort Myers, Fla.) with 13:12 to go in the second half giving them a 39-30 lead. For Life it was his third trey of the night and he finished with 11 points in the game.

Redshirt sophomore Dante Milligan (New York, N.Y.) went 6-for-6 from the floor to finish with 13 points and freshman Chris Lowe (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) played a career-high 36 minutes, handed out a career-high tying seven assists and pulled down a career-high eight rebounds. Milligan and Lowe combined to outscore the Hawks' reserves giving UMass a 20-to-2 advantage in bench scoring.

Saint Joseph's fought back in the final moments of the game pulling to within 64-58 with 29 seconds. But UMass was able to hit its free throws down the stretch to hold on for the 10 point win.

Rob Ferguson led SJU with 15 points, while Abdulai Jalloh added 14.

The Minutemmen will next head to Saint Louis on Saturday, Jan. 14 for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off. The game will mark just the third time the two programs have met all-time with the teams splitting the previous two contests. The game will be televised on the Atlantic 10 Television Network and can be watched in the local area on Fox Sports New England.

Coach Ford general reaction to the game: I'm very proud of our defense tonight. It was a great defensive effort by both teams. Both teams were exhausted from the effort and I think that's why St. Joseph's struggled with threes tonight. The first thing to go is your legs when you get tired

Coach Ford on the performance of James Life, Dante Milligan and Chris Lowe: They were the difference in the game. They gave a complete effort and without their energy we don't win tonight. They rebounded well and I thought we did a good job of "gang rebounding" where even the guards are crashing the boards.

Dante Milligan on his 13 point, 6-6 from the floor performance: Coach Ford expected a lot from me. It's taken me a few games to shake the rust off and will probably take me a few more games to settle in. I'm just trying to do the little things to help this team win.

Rashaun Freeman on shaking the eight-game losing streak to St. Joseph's: Going into the game, it was in the back of our minds. We knew we had to get it done tonight. We played a great first half defensively, but we knew we had to crank it up a notch in the second half. This is our first quality win. We can't just be happy with that and we have to keep on improving.

UMass shows some quality
With new coach, Minutemen start down long road with win
By Marty Dobrow, The Boston Globe Correspondent, 1/12/2006

AMHERST -- After nearly a decade of darkness, some tunnel light filtered into the Mullins Center last night. The University of Massachusetts Minutemen posted their first true ''quality win" of the Travis Ford era, outscrapping the Saint Joseph's Hawks, 68-58, in a game that was fierce, feisty, and physical from opening tip to final buzzer.

UMass opened up a 14-point lead in the second half, then withstood a charge to go to 7-5 overall, and 2-0 in the Atlantic 10 for the first time in seven years.

The Minutemen won largely on the strength of coming-of-age performances from three first-year players. Dante Milligan came off the bench to score 11 points on 5-of-5 shooting. James Life gave UMass a boost with 11 points, including a critical 3 for 6 from 3-point range to help open up the rugby scrum in the paint. Perhaps most impressive was freshman point guard Chris Lowe, who ran the show fearlessly against a highly touted Saint Joe's backcourt. Lowe finished with 7 points, 7 assists, and a team-high 8 rebounds.

Those efforts, combined with a team-high 19 points from Rashaun Freeman, were enough for the win.

''It's a step forward," said Ford. ''It's a good win against a very good basketball team, but I'm not going to get overly excited until we start doing this on a consistent basis . . . Can we be a good team? We've shown we can. But we've showed the other side, too."

The victory snapped an eight-game winning streak in the series for Saint Joe's. The 6-6, 1-2 Hawks are the five-time defending regular-season A-10 champs. That streak matches the five straight posted by UMass in the early '90s. Saint Joe's got a team-high 15 points from Rob Ferguson.

Saint Joe's came in guardedly optimistic -- literally. The Hawks have traditionally been a team where the backcourt is front and center, never more so than the 30-2 team in 2003-04 that featured Jameer Nelson and Delonte West, both now averaging double-figure points in the NBA.

This year's troika of guards had been outstanding. Abdulai Jalloh, Chet Stachitas, and Dwayne Lee all came in averaging double figures. All were hitting better than 40 percent of their 3-pointers. Last night, though, they died by the three, combining to go 1 for 17 from 3-point land. The trio didn't hit a three until Jalloh (14 points) connected with 46.8 seconds remaining.

''Our biggest concern is offense," said Hawks coach Phil Martelli. ''When we are guarded, we get into a state of panic."

Part of that, of course, was because UMass sustained its defensive intensity for 40 minutes, showing the 4,122 fans the toughness that defined Minutemen teams back when they were hanging banners at Mullins.

''We're going to sleep knowing that we have to live and die with our defense every single game," said Freeman.

Off the opening tip, the Minutemen attacked the basket with high-flying 6-foot-6-inch senior Jeff Viggiano -- only to have his shot pinned off the glass by the explosive 6-1 Jalloh. On the ensuing possession, UMass played 34 seconds' worth of tenacious defense, only to surrender a shot-clock-beating jump shot from Lee.

The Hawks jumped to a 6-0 lead, but the Minutemen steadied the ship. They tied the score on a Milligan basket, 13-13. A minute late they took their first lead when Milligan banked in a shot from the top of the key.

At the half, the game was deadlocked at 23, but UMass quickly took control after intermission. Two Viggiano free throws put the Minutemen ahead to stay with 18:31 left. They steadily built the margin, which crested at 14 on a Freeman basket with 5:37 remaining. Saint Joe's cut the gap to 6, but could get no closer.

Hawks' timing off against Minutemen
By Mike Scandura, for The Philadelphia Daily News, 1/12/2006

AMHERST, Mass. - Saint Joseph's continues to run on a treadmill, which is a polite way of saying the Hawks appear to be going nowhere.

The latest example of the Hawks' futility was on display last night at the Mullins Center when the University of Massachusetts capitalized on frigid shooting by St. Joe's and rolled to a 68-58 victory in an Atlantic 10 Conference game.

In the process of shooting 35.7 percent (20-for-56), the Hawks saw their eight-game winning streak against the Minutemen evaporate and they fell below .500 (1-2) in the conference.

"Our biggest concern is offense," Hawks coach Phil Martelli said. "When we are guarded, we go into a state of panic, and we just don't have enough ball skill on this team to defeat the physical play that we see. It's a shame, because this team will fight. But the ability to run offense when guarded really baffles me."

Martelli really was baffled when he looked at Rob Ferguson's line. Ferguson, a 6-8 forward, scored a team-high 15 points, yet took only eight shots in 30 minutes.

"We have a kid like Ferguson go 6-for-8 in the game and we don't have the wherewithal to get him the ball enough," Martelli said.

Abdulai Jalloh (14 points) was the only other Hawk in double figures.

Center Rashaun Freeman led the Minutemen (7-5, 2-0) with 15 points, and Dante Milligan and James Life each added 11. Milligan came off the bench and hit all five of his shots while playing a mere 13 minutes.

"You expect Freeman [to score]," Martelli said. "But you can't have a guy come into the game and get 11 points."

But despite Milligan's performance, Martelli kept coming back to his team's inability to run an offense regardless of the opposition. In this game, that problem was exemplified by the fact St. Joe's (6-6 overall) dished out a modest 14 assists.

"We're not able to get into any kind of rhythm or flow," Martelli said. "I don't understand it. I don't see us being able to defeat it mentally. It almost defeats us mentally when we see we're guarded. When we're able to kind of free flow, it's not a problem.

"But now this is Xavier, this is UMass. Everybody watches tape now. You've got to be able to run offense. You've got to be willing to screen. You've got to know when you're open off the screens. And we don't have that feel offensively.

"It's not defense. It's the offensive end of the floor."

St. Joe's problems on the offensive end never were more obvious then during one stretch in the second half. After Ferguson dropped in a layup with 12 minutes, 10 seconds remaining that pulled St. Joe's within 39-34, they went 8:06 without a basket - until Ahmad Nivins hit a short jumper.

Ironically, St. Joe's led, 25-23, when Chet Stachitas nailed a jumper for the first basket of the second half. But the Minutemen promptly outscored the Hawks, 18-9, to grab a 43-34 lead that they would basically live off the rest of the game.

"I don't think our offense was as fluid as it should have been tonight," Hawks guard Dwayne Lee said. "I think we had a couple of stretches where we were too stagnant out there and they took advantage of that.

"It's not there every night like it should be. We don't have too much room for error. For this team to be as good as it can be, we have to come out every night and play to our full potential, on the defensive end as well as the offensive end."

Lee had a point about the defensive end, at least in the second half when the Minutemen snared nine offensive rebounds that led to 10 second-chance points.

"Tonight our shots weren't falling, so we had to dig in and get those big stops to carry us to the victory," Lee said. "But we didn't have that."

What the Hawks did have was their typical fast start as they twice built five-point leads in the first 5 minutes, the last at 13-8. But Milligan dropped in a layup and buried a three-point shot, which helped turn the momentum in the Minutemen's favor.

In retrospect, the Hawks might have been fortunate that they went off at intermission in a 23-23 tie because, after Ferguson buried a three-point shot for a 21-18 lead with 7:36 left in the half, St. Joe's went 6:38 without a basket - until Stachitas drained a jumper that tied it at 23.

During the Hawks' drought, the Minutemen scored only five points and turned the ball over twice while also missing a pair of free throws.

Even though the Hawks lost for the fifth time in their last seven games, Lee, for one, isn't about to punch out a wall.

"We're not even halfway through the season yet," he said. "There are a lot of games to be played. This is another game that we let slip through our hands, and I tip my hat to UMass because they played a good game. We had a good chance at winning the game, but we didn't execute down the stretch like we needed to."

Bench helps UMass end Hawks' hex, Lowe superb at point guard
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/12/2006

AMHERST - What the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team's bench lacked in quantity, it more than made up for in quality Wednesday night.

Chris Lowe and Dante Milligan delivered strong efforts off the bench, lifting the Minutemen to a 68-58 win over Saint Joseph's at the Mullins Center.

The victory for UMass (7-5, 2-0 Atlantic 10) ended its eight-game losing streak against the Hawks. St. Joseph's (6-6, 1-2) fell below .500 in conference play for the first time since the 1999-2000 season.

The Minutemen's best games have been when their freshman point guard Lowe has played well and Wednesday might have been his best overall game yet.

After starting point guard Brandon Thomas struggled with a couple of early turnovers, coach Travis Ford inserted Lowe and played him for 37 minutes, by far his season high.

Lowe asked Ford for a quick rest in the second half.

'I laughed at him,' Ford said. 'I told him we don't have time for that - 'You can rest tomorrow.' '

Except for a couple of missed free throws late that proved insignificant, Lowe was excellent. He finished with seven points, eight rebounds, seven assists and just one turnover and outplayed Dwayne Lee, his well-respected Hawk counterpart.

'I feel pleased with my play,' Lowe said. 'I put it in my mind to come out and play my hardest.'

Ford, who admittedly has been tough on Lowe all year, didn't let up.

'I'll pat him on the back tonight, but Saturday is a whole new challenge,' Ford said.

That challenge will be A-10 newcomer Saint Louis, which hosts the Minutemen at 8 p.m.

Junior big man Rashaun Freeman was far more forthcoming with praise for his rookie teammate.

'He's playing like a fifth-year senior,' Freeman said. 'He had tremendous calmness. They tried to trap him, but he beat it every time.'

Milligan, the transfer from Pittsburgh, played his best game as a Minuteman. He had 11 points, four rebounds and three blocked shots in 13 minutes.

Freeman led all scorers with 19 points, while James Life added 11.

Rob Ferguson led St. Joseph's with 15 points, while Abdulai Jalloh added 14.

'Our biggest concern is offense,' St. Joe's coach Phil Martelli said. 'When we're guarded, we go into a state of panic.'

The Hawks scored the first six points of the game, but the Minutemen bounced back and tied the game at 13-13 with 13 minutes, 29 seconds remaining in the first half.

The rest of the first half featured impressive defense by both teams, who went to the break tied 23-23.

Chet Stachitas scored the first basket of the second half, but the Minutemen scored the next seven points to take a 30-25 lead.

The UMass defense carried over from the first half, as it forced the Hawks deep into the shot clock on nearly every possession. Lowe set the tone when he smothered Hawk guard Dwayne Lee into a five- second violation less than two minute into the half. The play seemed to rattle Lee, who dribbled the ball off his foot a few minutes later.

UMass spent this week in practice preparing to prevent the Hawks from getting good shots from 3-point range and they made just four of 25.

'I'm proud of the way our guys really took what we worked on in practice defensively the past three days and really put it into action,' Ford said.

The defense combined with a 38-26 rebounding edge helped the Minutemen extend the lead to as many as 14 points. The Hawks got within six with 38.7 seconds left, but UMass, which had a shaky night from the free-throw line (21-for-33), made its last six foul shots to clinch the victory.

While his team improved to 2-0 in league play for the first time since the 2000-01 season, Ford said he hopes his team would build off the victory.

'It was good win over a good team, but we're not going to get overly excited about it,' Ford said. 'The moment you start celebrating is when teams sneak up and get you.'

Milligan shows off his arsenal
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/12/2006

AMHERST - Before Wednesday's game, Saint Joseph's coach Phil Martelli turned to an assistant and commented that University of Massachusetts forward Dante Milligan looked bigger than he had expected.

In 13 minutes of action, Milligan played better than Martelli or anybody had anticipated. With 12 minutes, 38 seconds left in the first half, Milligan banked in a 3-pointer that gave UMass its first lead of the game. Martelli rolled his eyes in disbelief.

Milligan, who transferred from Pittsburgh, finished with a career-high 11 points and showed off his full complement of offensive skills as UMass won 68-58.

In addition to the 3-pointer, his first as a Minuteman, he had a layup, a tip-in and two jump hooks that UMass fans haven't seen since Jackie Rogers departed.

'I'm a complete player,' said Milligan, who added four rebounds and three blocked shots. 'At Pitt, I was exclusively a perimeter player. Here I've played exclusively in the post. After practice, I've worked on my jumper and my jump hook to diversify my game.'

FRIENDLY CONFINES - The Minutemen have yet to lose at home under Travis Ford. They're 5-0 this year and 9-0 dating back to last year's 67-63 loss to Richmond on Jan. 29.

NEXT UP - UMass will travel to the Atlantic 10's westernmost outpost to get their first look at league newcomer Saint Louis at 8 p.m. Saturday. Because the U.S. Figure Skating Championships are being held at the Savvis Center, the game will be played in St. Joseph's, Mo.

The Billikens are 7-7 after losing at George Washington 69-64 in overtime Wednesday night.

STARTING LIFE - Since entering the starting lineup Saturday, junior guard James Life's offensive numbers have started to climb as he's scored 11 in both games. He shot 3-for-6 from 3-point range Wednesday.

FREEMAN CLIMBING - Junior big man Rashaun Freeman continued his climb up the UMass career scoring chart as his 19 points moved him into sole possession at No. 30 all-time with 1,072. He needs one point to tie No. 29 Shannon Crooks and nine to match No. 28 Jack Foley.

He has scored in double figures in 10 of 12 games this year.

MISCELLANEOUS _Neither team had an offensive rebound for the first 15 minutes of the game.

Dayton has the longest active winning streak against UMass with six straight victories after the Minutemen ended their eight-game losing streak against the Hawks.

UMass has had an odd streak off bad luck in recent years when it comes to their program covers, which are printed before the season. Suspended guard Maurice Maxwell was featured on the cover of Wednesday night's program. A year ago Brennan Martin was on the cover the game after he was declared academically ineligible. Several other players have been featured in games where they were injured.
