MHERST - University of Massachusetts coach Travis Ford will be officially introduced Saturday to the rivalry with Temple when the Owls come to Amherst for a 2 p.m. game on ESPN.
More significantly, though, he will be introduced to Hall of Fame coach John Chaney's famed matchup zone.
''I've seen Temple play a lot throughout the years. I've always respected John Chaney and what he's done at Temple,'' Ford said. ''I've always enjoyed their style of play. He's had tremendous success with it. I don't know if I've ever played a team that does what they do.''
While former UMass coach Steve Lappas changed his team's offensive philosophy to combat the Owls, Ford said his adjustments will be minimal.
''We've obviously got to get the ball inside somehow,'' said Ford, whose team will try to extend its home winning streak to 11. ''We know what the strength of our team is. We're not going to change a whole lot.''
Still, the Minutemen (8-6, 3-1 Atlantic 10) would benefit from a strong outside shooting day against the Temple zone. Junior James Life, who came to UMass with a reputation for being a great shooter, will likely get a chance to be a big factor on offense.
Life, who has been very streaky in his short Minuteman career, isn't putting pressure on himself.
''If I hit some shots that'd be wonderful, but if we play good defense and get the ball inside to our strengths, we'll be fine,'' said Life, who is averaging 12.8 points per game at the Mullins Center. ''I would like to contribute if possible.''
Ford said he also hopes to get Brandon Thomas going again. The junior swingman struggled in his brief stint as the team's starting point guard and is now back on the wing.
''We need to get his confidence back. I put him in a tough situation,'' Ford said. ''He can handle the ball, but to say, 'You're the starting point guard,' might have been a little much. That was my fault.
''We have to get him more comfortable where he's at. His main position will definitely be on the wing. That's where he's at his best and that's where we need him,'' Ford added. ''He's a very good basketball player on the wing.''
Temple arrives in Amherst at 9-6 (3-2 A-10) a mark that includes the Owls' usual nasty nonconference schedule. They fell to UCLA and Villanova and No. 1 Duke visits Philadelphia on Feb. 25.
When Temple is shooting well it is hard to beat, but the Owls have been inconsistent from the field. Their 39.3 shooting percentage is last in the conference.
''We're working with four guards most of the time, which is completely different that we've shown before,'' said Chaney, who turns 74 on Saturday. ''We're hoping we can shoot the ball a lot better, but we haven't demonstrated that in a lot of our games. We've been uphill and downhill in our shooting.''
The Owls almost never turn the ball over. Their average of 7.7 giveaways per game is the best in all of Division I.
That number can be negated by their rebounding and shooting struggles. Their average rebounding margin is a league-worst minus-5.6.
Temple will try to take advantage of the turnover problems that have often plagued the Minutemen. The Owls are among the league leaders with 15 turnovers forced per game.
The matchups could be difficult at times for UMass too. Freshman point guard Chris Lowe gives away at least five inches to all of the Owl regulars. When Temple does go to four guards, Rashaun Freeman or Stephane Lasme will have to guard someone smaller and quicker on the perimeter.
Mardy Collins is Temple's top scorer at 15.2 points per game and leads the Atlantic 10 with 2.6 steals per game.
''He's one heck of a basketball player,'' Ford said. ''He can shoot it. He can go one-on-one. He rebounds the basketball. He's a very complete point guard.''
UMASS STAYS ON WRNX - UMass and WRNX announced Friday that the school will keep its men's basketball, football and ice hockey games on the Holyoke-based station for two more seasons. This season marks the fourth year UMass games have been on WRNX.

MHERST, Mass. - UMass used a 31-to-5 run starting in the first half to claim a 60-34 win over Temple on Saturday in front of the season's largest crowd of 8,127 in the Mullins Center. Sophomore Lawrence Carrier (San Bernadino, Calif.) had a career day hitting five three-pointers and leading UMass with 17 points. Senior Jeff Viggiano (Suffield, Conn.) also paced the Minutemen with 17 points, four rebounds and two steals.
![]() Lawrence Carrier was key to the UMass victory. |
Temple's 34 points was the fewest an opponent scored on the Minutemen since Jan. 7, 1950, when UMass beat Norwich, 37-28. It was the lowest point total for Temple since Feb. 18, 1973 when they lost to Tennessee, 11-6.
The Minutemen recorded their 11th-straight home win dating back to last season and are now 4-1 in the Atlantic 10 for the first time since 2000-01 when they started 8-1 in the league.
UMass took control of the first half with a 17-2 run keyed by three three-pointers from Carrier and four points from junior Brandon Thomas (San Antonio, Texas).
Carrier entered the game with just three treys on the season. His third shot gave the Minutemen a 29-15 lead with 2:02 remaining in the half.
In that stretch, the Minutemen played tenacious defense holding Temple to just 2-for-18 shooting over the last 15:09 of the first half after the Owls started the game 4-for-6 from the floor.
Temple's 15 points in the first half was the lowest total of points surrendered by the Minutemen for a half this season and the fewest since Feb. 12, 2003 held Richmond to just 14 in the first half.
The Owls' shooting did not improve to start the second half and UMass continued to pour on the offense with a 14-to-3 run following intermission.
After Temple's Mardy Collins hit the first lay-up of the second-half, UMass responded with two three-pointers and a break-away dunk from Viggiano to give the Minutemen a 35-17 lead with 14:47 to play in the game.
Carrier drilled his fourth three-pointer of the game, while Viggiano hit his third to give UMass a 43-18 lead with 11:31 remaining in the game.
Junior walk-on Matt Pennie (Hanson, Mass.) finished the game with his first-career points on a 3-pointer with two seconds left.
Collins entered the game averaging 15.2 points per game and the Owls had four players who averaged double-figures scoring per game. Against the UMass defense, however, Collins managed just eight points and no Temple player recorded double-figures in the scoring column.
UMas held an autograph session with all of its players after the game.
The Minutemen take to the road for the next three games starting on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at Rhode Island. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. and the game will be televised on CN8.
Mass held its opponent to the fewest points since Jan. 7, 1950, when they beat Norwich, 37-28.
* The crowd of 8,127 was the largest of the year and biggest since 9,037 came out for last year's upset of UConn on Dec. 9, 2004. It is the largest non-UConn game crowd at the Mullins Center since the last sell out at the Mullins Center (9,493) on Feb. 17, 2001 vs. Temple.
* It was the lowest field goal percentage for a UMass opponent since Dec. 12, 1998 when BC shot 23.7.
* UMass held Temple to just 15 first-half point, the fewest for a UMass opponent since Richmond on Feb. 12, 2003, when the Spiders trailed 25-14 at intermission.
* It was also the fewest point scored by Temple in the series, breaking the record of 35 points set in a 59-35 win on Feb. 1, 1996.
* Jeff Viggiano scored the first eight points and 11 of the first 14 points in the second half for UMass as he broke into double-figures for the third game in a row. It was his eighth game this season with 10 or more points and 34th of his career. He finished with 17 points, tying his season-high.
* Lawrence Carrier was 3-for-3 on 3-point attempts in the first half. He came into the game 3-for-15 from the arc. He added two more treys in the second half, setting his career-high for 3-pointers made.
* Carrier tied his career-high with 17 points, which was his second time in double-figures this season and seventh of his career.
* Chris Lowe had a career-high nine assists.
* UMass held its eighth opponent to less than 40 percent from the floor this season and fourth in a row.
* UMass' defense was stellar all game, the Owls had a drought of just 3 field goals in 29 shot attempts for nearly 20 minutes bridging the two halves.
* Rashaun Freeman had five rebounds in the game's first 7:18.
* After Temple started the game hitting 4-of-6 from the floor in the first 4:51, the Owls ended the half making just 2-of-18 over the final 15:09.
* Rashaun Freeman and Lawrence Carrier each drew charges in the win.
* James Life switched his uniform number from No. 5 to No. 34, which was his number in high school and at Manatee Community College, where he was a JUCO All-American.
Coach Travis Ford on his team's effort:
"Things went our way from the beginning, when the Temple player dribbled the ball of his foot. Temple's a real good team. This was probably our best games of the year. Carrier and Thomas really stepped up."
Coach Ford on his team's shooting:
"We're not a bad shooting team, we get caught taking bad shots. Today, we took good threes. I knew we weren't going to win inside, we had to draw the defense in then kick out."
Coach Ford on winning big in front of a national audience:
"It's good to win any game. It helps recruiting when we're on national television and we win. I told our team it was a must win. We could not let this one get away with three tough road games coming up."
Coach Ford on Lawrence Carrier:
"We have the LC Rule. It is that when his feet are set, he can shoot. He may be the best offensive player on our team."
Lawrence Carrier on his team:
"We are 4-1 (in A-10 play). We should have won at St. Louis. Hopefully, we win at Rhode Island. We have confidence."
Chris Lowe on the game:
"We always knew LC could shoot. He was hot, and we kept feeding it to him. Our scout team did great. Practicing against the scout team (Forbes, Brower, Bonner) helped me break down Temple's zone."
Temple coach John Chaney on his team:
"Our guys had trouble making baskets. As the game progressed, we cared about I instead of we. We must have made two threes, it is just not acceptable."
Chaney on Chris Lowe:
"The key was the point guard. He didn't turn it over. He had nine assists, that's the key."
Chaney on free throw shooting in college basketball:
"Our guy gets a 1 and 1 and shoots an airball! In all my years, I've never seen such poor foul shooting...When you start missing foul shots, It's like everyone gets infected with it...I don't get it."
Chaney on his team's shooting:
"Shooting two for twenty on threes is not acceptable. I'm thinking of benching somebody and bringing in Dion, he plays with his head."
MHERST, MA - Thankfully Temple coach John Chaney does not like to celebrate birthdays, because his 74th is one he would like to forget. Massachusetts, behind the perimeter play of Lawrence Carrier (17 points) and Jeff Viggiano (17 points) and a solid zone defense, defeated the Owls, 60-34, at the Mullins Center in front of 8,127 fans and a national television audience. The point total was the lowest by a Temple team since an 11-6 loss at Tennessee on December 15, 1973. Temple falls to 9-7, 3-3 in the Atlantic 10 while UMass improves to 9-6, 4-1.
“Our guys had trouble making baskets and trying to get the ball to the shooters,” said Chaney. “They made a couple of field goals in the early portion of the game and then they continue to look for “I” instead of “we”. That is a problem. Shooting has been a problem for us all year.”
It started off well for the Owls as Temple took a 7-2 lead with 16:55 to play. Following a tip-in by Stephane Lasme and two made free throws by Rashaun Freeman, Dustin Salisbery worked his way in for a lay-up to make it 10-6. The Owls, four-of-six from the field at that point (15:06), would make two more field goals (18 FGA) the rest of the half.
The Minutemen, who won their 11th straight home game, did not start to take charge until Carrier came off the bench. The sophomore forward, who entered the contest with a 3.9 scoring average, drained all three of his three-pointers in the stanza, the final two capping an 8-0 run to end the half. That gave UMass a 29-15 advantage at the break.
The second half started out exactly the same way. Temple connected on just one of its first 11 attempts (0-5 3PT) to open the frame and trailed 43-18 with 11:01 to play. This time it was Viggiano, the senior captain, who took control. The UMass guard scored 11 of his team’s first 14 points in the stanza, draining three three-pointers.
All that was left was the final mind-numbing numbers.
Temple shot a season-low 26.5 percent (13-49) from the field and an even more dismal 10 percent (2-20) from long range. The A-10’s worst free throw shooting team was able to make just 40 percent (6-15) from the charity stripe to drop its season percentage to 59.2 percent.
“In all my years I have never had a team that couldn’t shoot foul shots like this,” said Chaney.
The Owl coach credited the play of freshman guard Chris Lowe for the team’s offensive performance. The rookie point guard dished nine assists while handling the Cherry and White zone (2 turnovers) like a veteran.
“The little kid did a great job of penetrating our pressure and passing the ball,” said Chaney. “They then got into a good rhythm of shooting the ball.”
UMass was as hot from the field as Temple was cold. The Minutemen made 21-of-41 field goals (51.2%) and nine-of-19 from three-point range (47.4%). All this with their top player, Freeman (15.7 ppg./8.9 rpg.), on the bench mired in foul trouble for most of the contest (21 minutes played).
Mardy Collins, who played through a sprained right foot, Mark Tyndale, Antywane Robinson and Salisbery each had eight points to lead Temple.
The Owls need to regroup in a hurry as they play host to the A-10 co-leader Xavier Wednesday night (7:00 p.m.) at the Liacouras Center.
MHERST -- Yesterday's resumption of the UMass-Temple rivalry ended in symbolic fashion. On Temple's last possession, with 16 seconds remaining, Dustin Salisbery got fouled. After hitting the first free throw, he then threw up an airball.
On the ensuing UMass possession, walk-on Matt Pennie -- a former team manager -- swished a 3-pointer from the right wing just before the buzzer sounded.
Thus concluded a startling 60-34 UMass rout before a rousing season-high crowd of 8,127 at the Mullins Center. It was one of those rare games where UMass (9-6, 4-1 Atlantic 10) could do almost no wrong and Temple (9-7, 3-3) could do little right.
''Things went our way a little bit from the beginning," said UMass coach Travis Ford, after posting the biggest win of his debut season. ''It kind of snowballed."
The outcome forced both teams to thumb way back in their media guides. UMass had not held a team to such a low point total in 56 years, since a 37-28 win at Norwich Jan. 7, 1950. Temple had not posted such a low score since a pre-shot-clock thriller at Tennessee in 1973, which the Owls lost, 11-6.
Temple coach John Chaney was not given much of a present by his team on his 74th birthday. The Owls did not have a single double-figure scorer, and they clanged their way to 26.5 percent shooting from the field, including 2 for 20 from 3-point land. Free throws were also an eyesore at 6 for 15.
Generally, the more candles you put on Chaney's cake, the hotter he seems to burn, but yesterday, like his team, Chaney seemed resigned to a bad day at the office.
''Our guys had trouble making baskets," he said, his voice hoarse but gentle, his tie knot, as usual, heading south. ''They continue to look for I instead of we."
Temple actually hit four of its first six shots, effectively backing down the smaller UMass guards. Then the Minutemen shifted out of their staple man-to-man defense into a zone that caused the Owls fits. That was an ironic shift, given Temple's legendary matchup zone.
The Minutemen handled Temple's defense with surprising ease. Sophomore Lawrence Carrier came off the bench to have by far his best game as a Minuteman, scoring 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including 5 for 7 from behind the arc, all from his favorite spot in the left corner.
''I love playing against zone," he said. ''They're aggressive in the zone. They tend to overplay and leave one position open."
Ford said UMass has what he calls the ''L.C. rule" for Carrier. He's not supposed to shoot off the dribble or coming around a screen, but if his feet are set, he should let it fly.
Senior Jeff Viggiano had similar success from the right wing, matching Carrier's game-high 17 points. Viggiano knifed to the glass effectively, and also buried a trio of treys to help put the game out of reach in the second half.
Those perimeter efforts were made possible in large part by another stellar effort from freshman point guard Chris Lowe, who frequently found seams in the Temple defense and got shooters the ball in position to score. Lowe finished with nine assists and just two turnovers in 39 minutes of end-to-end action.
''I think the little kid did a great job penetrating our pressure," said Chaney. ''The key was the point guard. We couldn't get him to turn it over."
For a UMass program yearning to regain some national footing, this was a major step forward: A decisive win before a big home crowd on national television. Viggiano said he sensed the opportunity when the team came out for warmups and found the seats already filling up.
''We started to get the feeling this is going to be something special," he said. ''We wanted to take advantage of it."
MHERST, Mass. - With 11 minutes left in the game, Massachusetts students sang "Happy Birthday" to Temple coach John Chaney. He didn't seem to notice, probably because his team trailed by 25 points.
Instead of delivering a victory on their coach's 74th birthday, the Owls fell apart in a 60-34 loss to the Minutemen yesterday at the Mullins Center.
It was Temple's lowest score since the infamous Tennessee game in December 1973, when Don Casey's squad held the ball for nearly 40 minutes in an 11-6 loss to the Volunteers.
But the Owls (9-7, 3-3 Atlantic Ten) weren't trying to keep the score down against the Minutemen (9-6, 4-1). Once they fell behind, they were trying to pick up the pace with pressure defense. But you can't score on defense. And Temple couldn't score on offense, either.
"Our guys had trouble making baskets," Chaney said after watching his team convert 2 of 20 three-pointers and 6 of 15 free throws. "And our guys had trouble trying to get the ball to our shooters."
The Minutemen stymied the Owls with a zone defense, which worked better than many of the participants expected.
"We expected them to play a little zone," said Temple point guard Mardy Collins, who played 39 minutes on a sore right foot that he injured in the team's previous game at Dayton. "But we figured we'd make a few shots and they'd come right back out of it."
Travis Ford, UMass' first-year coach, figured his team would play some zone to neutralize matchups in the backcourt. He was worried whom Chris Lowe, his 6-foot, 160-pound freshman point guard, would defend. Indeed, the Owls exploited that matchup, as they hit four of their first six shots to take a 10-6 lead. But the shots stopped falling when the Minutemen switched to a zone.
The Owls held their last lead, 13-12, with nine minutes to go in the first half. UMass then closed with a 17-2 run, getting three three-pointers from sophomore forward Lawrence Carrier. Temple scored just once on its last 13 possessions of the half.
"Everybody just stood around waiting, and we ended up taking long, bad threes," Collins said.
Last year at the Mullins Center, Temple missed 22 of its first 23 shots before coming back to win by double digits. But yesterday's second-half comeback lasted for all of one possession, when Ford briefly switched to man-to-man defense and Collins drove for a layup. Then it was back to the zone.
The score was 43-18 when the UMass students serenaded Chaney, whose birthday wish was probably to have his team hit some free throws.
"I've never seen my team miss as many foul shots as we do. It's the pits," he said.
Nobody scored in double figures for the Owls, who dropped to 0-6 in games in which junior guard Dustin Salisbery fails to score 10 points.
"I guess when I'm not scoring, we don't win," Salisbery said.
That goes for his teammates, too.
MHERST - It's safe to say that John Chaney has had better birthdays than No. 74.
The Temple coach and Hall of Famer spent a good portion of his birthday Saturday aggravated as he watched the Owls take a historic 60-34 pounding from the University of Massachusetts at the Mullins Center.
It was the fewest points given up by a UMass team since it beat Norwich 37-28 Jan. 7, 1950. And it was the fewest points scored by Temple since it lost to Tennessee 11-6 Dec. 15, 1973.
'We played well today, probably our best game for a 40-minute period,' UMass coach Travis Ford said. 'It was a good win for our basketball team executionwise for 40 minutes.'
Sophomore Lawrence Carrier matched his career high with 17 points off the bench, including five 3-pointers. Jeff Viggiano scored the first eight points of the second half and also finished with 17.
While Temple's matchup zone has confused many veteran point guards the first time they face it, UMass freshman point guard Chris Lowe didn't miss a beat, continuing his strong play with a career-high nine assists and just two turnovers.
That effort combined with his strong play Wednesday in a 74-61 victory over Fordham earned Lowe Atlantic 10 rookie-of-the-week honors.
'The key was the point guard. We couldn't turn them over,' said Chaney, who was serenaded with mock 'Happy Birthday' and 'How Old are You Now?' taunts in the second half. 'The little kid did a great job penetrating our pressure and passing the ball. Lowe did an excellent job.'
Lowe praised the UMass scout team, made up largely of transfers Gary Forbes, Luke Bonner and Etienne Brower, for helping to prepare him.
'Our scout team is great. We practice twice a day,' Lowe said. 'So we've practiced against it four times. That helped me dissect it today.'
No Owl scored in double figures and four players shared the team scoring lead with eight.
UMass (9-6, 4-1 Atlantic 10) is at Rhode Island at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Temple's historically bad offensive day started promisingly. The Owls (9-7, 3-3 A-10) made four of their first six shots to take an early 10-6 lead, but their offense fell apart after that. They shot just 2-for-18 for the remainder of the first half.
Even more foul trouble for Rashaun Freeman couldn't sink the Minutemen. UMass led 12-10 when Freeman was called for his second foul, sending him to the bench for the rest of the first half. But UMass thrived in his absence, outscoring the Owls 17-5 to take a 29-15 lead at halftime.
The Minutemen opened the second half on a 14-3 surge that put the game out of reach.
The Owls shot 26.5 percent (13-for-49) in the game and 10 percent (2-for-20) from 3-point range against the UMass zone.
'We played zone most of the game,' Ford said. 'We've hung our hat on our man-to-man defense and it's been pretty good, but I was worried about their guards. Not only taking Chris Lowe one-on-one and posting him up, but James Life and Viggiano. As soon as the game started, their guards are backing us down, shooting layups and posting us.
'So we quickly went to our zone defense and we really executed it,' Ford continued. 'A lot of zones give up threes. We try to play our zone so we don't give up threes. They did a good job of that.'
Junior Matt Pennie punctuated the win with his first career basket, a 3-pointer, from the corner.
'He says I need to play him more,' Ford joked. 'It was a fitting end to the game. The guys were more excited about that than anything.'
The two teams will meet again Feb. 1 in Philadelphia. Ford and Viggiano both said they expect a tougher game.
'We don't need to be celebrating. This is a very good Temple team,' Ford said. 'I told (the Minutemen) 'You played well today. Things went well. But you have to play these guys again. They're going to remember this game.'
Viggiano agreed.
'Temple is a great team. They're well coached. They play great at home and we've struggled down there in the past,' Viggiano said. 'We're just going to have to keep playing the way we're playing.'

MHERST - The goal was to find a way to utilize Lawrence Carrier's shooting ability, while making him choose better shots.
The result was the 'L.C. Rule.' Carrier made five 3-pointers and matched his career high with 17 points as the University of Massachusetts beat Temple 60-34 Saturday. Carrier and Jeff Viggiano shared game-high honors.
'We have what we call the L.C. rule. If his feet are set, he can shoot it,' coach Travis Ford said. 'If he's coming of a screen or dribbling, he can't shoot. Every shot he took today, both feet were set.'
Carrier, who was 3-for-15 from 3-point range entering the game, made 5-of-7. He willingly accepted his new shooting restriction.
'It worked, so I'll continue to do that,' Carrier said. 'I love playing against zone. The corner is always open. Being a shooter, I just look for my shot.'
Freshman point guard Chris Lowe said the Minutemen recognized Carrier's hot hand early.
'We know L.C. can shoot the rock. We just told him to have his feet set and let it go,' Lowe said. 'He hit a three early and we just kept feeding it to him.'
Ford has continually been on Carrier for his work ethic and his conditioning, but praised his potential.
'Overall he may be our best offensive player. We see that in practice every day. He can get on rolls that are incredible,' Ford said. 'He's only a sophomore. I told him we're going to get him in shape because I think he can become a pretty good basketball player if he gets over his laziness. Tonight he did what he needed to do and made some shots.'
HOME SWEET - A crowd of 8,127, the largest of the season, witnessed UMass' 11th straight win at the Mullins Center. The Minutemen are 7-0 there this season.
UMass coach Travis Ford won 12 of 13 home games last year at Eastern Kentucky, meaning that teams he's coached are 19 of their last 20 at home.
The attendance was the largest for a UMass home game against a team other than UConn since the Mullins Center's last sellout Feb. 17, 2001, against Temple. UMass drew 9,037 Dec. 9, 2004, when it upset the Huskies 61-59.
LIGHTS - Saturday afternoon's wind seemed to affect the electricity in the Mullins Center halfway through the second half. The lights blinked for a short stretch, briefly stopping play.
NEXT UP - The Minutemen head to Rhode Island to face the Rams at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Ryan Center. URI (10-6, 4-1 Atlantic 10) has won four straight, including Saturday's 58-46 win over Richmond.
MISCELLANEOUS - Temple's 15 first half points were the fewest UMass has allowed in the first half since it led Richmond 25-14 at intermission Feb. 12, 2003.
UMass guard James Life switched his jersey from No. 5 to No. 34. Life wore No. 34 in high school and junior college and has a basketball tattoo with the No. 34 on it. Artie Bowers wore No. 34 before leaving the team after two games this season.
