UMass awaits rematch
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 2/8/2006

AMHERST -- The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team won't be surprised by the triangle-and-two defense this time.

La Salle (13-7, 5-4 Atlantic 10), which comes to the Mullins Center tonight at 7, threw several defensive looks at the Minutemen in the Explorers' 68-61 win Jan. 29. But none befuddled UMass (10-9, 4-4) more than the triangle-and-two.

UMass coach Travis Ford expects that La Salle coach John Giannini will use it again, a least a little.

'If it works, I'd do it again. He knows we're going to make adjustments, but he'll at least try it,' said Ford, adding that he doesn't know what other new wrinkle the Explorers might serve up this time. 'Dr. John, you never know ... He's going to have something up his sleeve.'

The Minuteman defense will have to do a better job containing Steve Smith. The Explorers' senior big man had 24 points and nine rebounds against UMass last month.

'He played well against us,' Ford said. 'He did a lot of things. He shot threes, made post moves, put the ball on the floor, rebounded. He did a little bit of everything. He's the best player I've seen in the league so far. He's dangerous. He's really good.'

But Ford said the Explorers are more than just Smith.

'I think La Salle is one of the top four teams in our league,' he said. 'You just look at what they have - I really like their basketball team.'

Tonight's game wraps up a stretch of six home-and-home games against the three Atlantic 10 teams the Minutemen face twice this season. The remaining seven games are all against a team UMass is facing for the first time this season.

Freeman had 11 points and 10 rebounds Jan. 29, but he wasn't happy with his effort.

He broke a mini-slump with 21 points and 15 rebounds in the Minutemen's 63-61 win over Rhode Island Saturday, an effort he wants to duplicate.

'I'm going to bring that energy and have the mentality again,' Freeman said. 'I want my teammates to follow my lead.'

The Explorers' win over UMass started a three-game win streak that included a 62-56 upset of Temple Saturday.

But Giannini cautioned against getting too optimistic over the Explorers' recent success.

'In the shorter term, there's no question we've played great in the last three games, but we're not a great team,' he said. 'We still need to improve a great deal.'

The Minutemen are trying to extend their Mullins Center win streak to 13 games, which was tied for 10th longest in the nation heading into Tuesday night's games.

Life heats up for UMass
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 2/8/2006

University of Massachusetts junior guard James Life has scored in double figures in each of the last four games, including back-to-back 19-point efforts.

But the junior guard, who is in his first season at UMass, is hesitant to admit he's improving.

'I don't know. I could be getting lucky,' he said.

Life arrived with a reputation as a big scorer after putting up big numbers at Manatee Community College in Florida.

But he got off to a slow start at UMass, struggling a bit on defense while shooting inconsistently.

'It's late in the season. I haven't done as well as I wanted to,' Life said. 'If I want to get better, I have to work my way up.'

Life did work hard, spending countless solo hours in the gym and playing well in spurts, but things didn't really come together until Saturday.

In UMass' 63-61 win over Rhode Island, Life had 19 points and six rebounds and played solid defensive throughout on Rams guard Dawan Robinson.

'Little by little I'm starting to understand a little bit more what I'm capable of doing at this level,' Life said. 'I'm just trying to understand. ... It's exciting too. I know what I need to do now.'

His baseline jumper with just under a minute left put UMass up 63-59 and turned out to be the winning basket.

'I really like the flow he's in right now. He's really starting to play. He didn't shoot for a great percentage, but every shot he took the other night was a good shot,' UMass coach Travis Ford said. 'It was his best complete game without question. He may have had more points in other games but that was his best 40 minutes overall.'

Life said he's pleased to be contributing.

'I'm happy. My teammates trust me to make big shots,' he said. 'That's what I'm trying to do. It feels good to be in that situation.'

Home Win Streak Snapped By La Salle 65-44
Life scores 18 in loss to La Salle
From UMass Athletics, 2/8/2006

AMHERST, Mass. - A poor shooting night and a late 13-to-0 Explorer run late in the second half ended UMass' 12-game home win streak on Wednesday night as La Salle defeated the Minutemen 65-44 at the Mullins Center. The win for La Salle ended the longest active win streak win the Atlantic 10.

Junior James Life (Fort Myers, Fla.) scored 18 points, all in the second half and the final points for the Minutemen, to lead UMass. He tallied 12 consecutive points in a two minute, five second stretch hitting six free throws and three consecutive three pointers to rally the Minutemen (10-10, 5-5 A-10) back from an 18 point deficit. Life's third trey on a fast-break pull-up from the right arc cut the La Salle (14-7, 6-4 A-10) lead to 46-41 with 7:48 to cap a 15-to-2 UMass run, but it was as close as the Minutemen could to get.

La Salle put together a 13-to-0 run to go up by 18 with 2:35 remaining, 54-41. Smith, who picked up his fourth foul with 14:29 remaining in the game forcing him to sit until the five minute mark, scored five of his 10 points for the game in that run.

The Explorers came out strong to start the second half on a 19-to-8 run over the first 10:13 minutes of the period. Redshirt sophomore Dante Milligan (New York, N.Y.) snapped a 10 minute, 10 second UMass stretch without a field goal - going back to the first half - when he hit a lay-up with 13:18 to go.

Life was the only Minuteman to reach double figures in the scoring column on the night. Junior Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.) hauled in 11 rebounds, but was held to 0-for-8 shooting from the floor.

Four La Salle players scored in double figures highlighted by Darnell Harris' 14 points and Mike St. John's 13 points.

UMass shot just 24 percent from the floor for the game hitting 12-of-51 shots, while La Salle shot 39 percent from the floor (24-for-61).

The Explorers took a 27-22 lead into half time after putting together a 13-0 run holding UMass scoreless for nearly eight minutes. Junior Brandon Thomas (San Antonio, Texas) put a stop to the run with a three-pointer at 3:26, part of nine UMass bench points in the first half, to pull the Minutemen within four, 22-18.

Freeman, Lasme and Life were held to just four points combined on 1-for-11 shooting in the period.

The Minutemen will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 12 in Tallahassee, Fla., when UMass squares off against ACC member Florida State at 5:30 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on Fox Sports Net and regionally on NESN.

Post-game notes
From UMass Athletics, 2/8/2006

UMass saw its 12-game home win streak come to an end with the loss. UMass' last home loss came on Jan. 29, 2005, a 69-64 loss to Richmond.

* UMass' home win streak at the Mullins Center was the second-longest in the facility's history. The Minutemen opened the building with a 27-game win streak.

* (Note different from game notes) Coming into Wednesday's action, only 11 teams in the nation, led by Gonzaga (35) games had longer home winning streaks. Three teams with longer streaks played home games on Wednesday night: Florida (20, vs. South Carolina), Akron (14 vs. Western Michigan), Michigan State (13, vs. Purdue). UConn, which is tied with UMass at 12 home wins in a row hosts Syracuse Wednesday as well.

* UMass had its lowest scoring game since Feb. 14, 2004, a 64-44 loss at Xavier.

* It was the lowest at the Mullins Center since a 63-38 loss to Saint Joseph's on Jan. 5, 2002.

* James Life scored 15 consecutive UMass points midway through the second half. That came after had been held scoreless for the game including starting 0-for-6 from the field. He hit six consecutive free throws then made three 3-pointers to cut the deficit to 46-41. Life's first 12 points came in 2:05 as UMass shaved 13 points off a 44-26 deficit with 11:53 left in the second half. After his spurt UMass trailed just 46-41 with 7:48 remaining.

* It was Life's fifth game in a row in double-figures. Over his last five games, Life is averaging 16.6 points per game. Life has 10 games this season with 10 or more points.

* Rashaun Freeman grabbed more than 10 rebounds in a game, but did not score in double-figures for the first time in his career. It was his 29th career game with 10 or more rebounds. Freeman was held without a field goal for the first time in his career.

* UMass went 10:10 without a field goal from 3:26 left in the first half until 13:16 was left in the second half.

* The teams traded runs in the first half, UMass went on a 6-0 run over 5:20. Later in the half, La Salle outscored UMass 13-0 over 7:40 before a Brandon Thomas 3-pointer ended the drought.

* UMass held defending A-10 Player of the Year Steven Smith scoreless for the game's first 10:22 as he was 0-for-5 from the floor. Smith slammed home a follow up for his first points with 9:38 left in the half. Smith finished the game with 10 points.

Coach Travis Ford on the game:
"It was a disappointing game. We competed most of the game until the end. No one on our team played well. That's what it comes down to."

Coach Ford on his team's effort:
"Ray battled, crashing the offensive glass all night. It was just one of those nights. I am not saying we did it on purpose. Everyone had a bad night, players and coaches."

Coach Ford on Steve Smith:
"We tried to stop Smith and were pretty successful. We could have had the greatest game plan in history and we still would have lost. It happens. When all eight players don't play well it spells trouble."

Chris Lowe on his ankle:
"I was playing at about 40%. It was hard, but once I stepped on the court, I dedicated myself. I wasn't thinking about my ankle, just trying to help the team win...I do not regret playing."

Jeff Viggiano on the upcoming schedule:
"We have two tough teams coming up. If we beat them, we can make some noise. Anything can happen in the A-10 tourney. We are playing for seeding now."

James Life on his shooting:
"No one played well, especially me. I made my mind up to step up. I did well, but we came up short, very short."

UMass has no shot against La Salle
By Marty Dobrow, The Boston Globe Correspondent, 2/9/2006

AMHERST -- During a second-half timeout last night at the Mullins Center, the 3,897 fans were treated to the ''Sam the Minuteman vs. Mr. Slice Basketball Relay." This promotion, pitting the UMass mascot against a triangular yellow piece of foam with legs, ends with two area children trying to make a basket. As the children struggled to score, the UMass players -- liberated from coach Travis Ford's huddle -- waited patiently to take the court. Watching the kids, they understood: Some nights you can't buy a hoop.

Last night was a wrenching example for the Minutemen, who sent all manner of shots blasting off the rim. UMass (10-10, 5-5) connected on just 12 of 51 field goals, an embarrassing 23.5 percent, in a dispiriting 65-44 loss to La Salle.

''No one our basketball team played well," said Ford. ''Not a soul."

Thus crashed to earth UMass's Mullins mastery, an 8-0 record at home this season, and 12 straight victories over two years.

How bad was the UMass shooting? Consider the following:

UMass's field goals and shooting percentage were the worst since at least the 1980-81 season.

Top scorer Rashaun Freeman was 0 for 8 from the field and scored just 4 points. That was his first 0-fer in his three-year college career.

The Minutemen scored one field goal in a stretch of 17:48, the basketball equivalent of the Paleolithic Era.

Not a single Minuteman hit even 40 percent of his shots.

Other than James Life, UMass players managed one field goal and 4 points in the second half.

''None of us are playing well," said a somber Life.

La Salle certainly deserves a fair share of credit. The Explorers have emerged as the surprise team in the Atlantic 10. A year removed from a 10-20 record, they are in position for a postseason berth at 14-7, 6-4 in the league. Their interior defense thwarted Freeman and Stephane Lasme (2 points) all night. ''I've just seen these guys grow into good players, and a good team," said coach John Giannini. ''It's just tremendously rewarding."

The conventional wisdom that La Salle is a one-man show was emphatically debunked. Steven Smith, the league's top scorer, came out of the game when he committed his fourth foul with 14:29 left. He had only 4 points at the time on 2-for-10 shooting. With those statistics, UMass could have been up by double digits. Instead, the Minutemen trailed by 13.

La Salle's balanced scoring attack was led by Darnell Harris with 14 points, followed by Mike St. John (13), Jermaine Thomas (12), and Smith (10).

The Minutemen had only one real offensive stretch, and it all came out of Life's hands as he almost single-handedly brought the Minutemen back. Down, 44-26, Life nailed six free throws, followed by a trio of 3-pointers, to bring the Minutemen within 46-41. That was it, though, as La Salle followed with a definitive 16-0 run to send the fans fleeing for the exits.

Life finished with a game-high 18 points for the Minutemen.

Explorers too much for UMass
By Rob Greenfield, The Daily Collegian Staff, 2/9/2006

It was too little, too late for the Massachusetts men's basketball team (10-10, 5-5 Atlantic 10), as the La Salle Explorers held off a late offensive rush from the Minutemen and swept the season series with a 65-44 victory at the Mullins Center last night.

Junior James Life finished the game with 18 points on 4-of-13 shooting - all four field goals were 3-pointers. He went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.

UMass' offense was dormant for the majority of the game. The Minutemen went for just 22 points in the first half and went for a stretch of over eight minutes without a field goal.

"It was a disappointing game," UMass coach Travis Ford said. "I thought we competed for the majority of game, but nobody played well, not a soul."

La Salle held UMass to just 23.5 percent from the field on 12-of-51 shooting. Junior captain Rashaun Freeman was held scoreless and went 0-of-8 on the night in 34 minutes of action; his four points came on 4-for-4 shooting at the free-throw line.

The Minutemen went into halftime down 27-22 and came out flat to begin the second. La Salle went on a 7-0 run, pushing its lead to 34-22.

UMass pulled within eight points around the 11-minute mark but the Explorers answered with authority, as La Salle guard Darnell Harris hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions down the stretch, taking the life out of the crowd and the Minutemen's chances.

"It was about us just playing bad tonight," Ford said. "We could have had the greatest game plan in the history of basketball, and it still wouldn't have worked. It happens. Unfortunately, it happened to all of our players on one night. When all eight players don't play well, that's going to spell 'trouble' for our basketball team."

Life brought the Minutemen back in the game around the 10-minute mark in the second half. He hit 3-pointers on consecutive UMass possessions - on the first he unexpectedly pulled up from NBA-range just seconds into the shot clock and buried it.

The next trip down, after a turnover on the La Salle end, Life dribbled the length of the floor and pulled up again, hitting his second straight 3 and pulling UMass inside 10 points, 46-38, for the first time in over nine minutes.

"None of us are playing well, especially myself," Life said. "I finally made my mind up to step in a little bit and see what happens. I came up short, very short. I guess it backfired."

The Minutemen went to a zone defense around the 10-minute mark of the second half, and La Salle struggled to figure it out for the better part of three minutes. The Explorers looked out of sync, turning the ball over several times and getting the Minutemen back into the flow offensively.

"We had them on their heels for a while," senior Jeff Viggiano said after the game. "They just ended up executing, and we couldn't knock down shots."

At the 7:44 mark Life struck again. A turnover led to another UMass fast break. The ball was kicked ahead to Life just inside the 3-point line. Knowing where the line was, and seeking it intently, he backed up and hit his third 3 of the half over La Salle's Jermaine Thomas.

No escaping awful loss to Explorers, Mullins streak stopped at 12
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 2/9/2006

AMHERST -- For a few brief, fleeting minutes Wednesday it looked like James Life might rescue the University of Massachusetts from an otherwise awful performance. But even his torrid second half wasn't enough as La Salle beat the Minutemen 65-44 Wednesday.

It was the first loss for UMass at the Mullins Center in a 12-game streak dating back to a 69-64 defeat by Richmond Jan. 29, 2005.

The Explorers led 44-26 with 12 minutes, 18 seconds left in the game which sent some fans to the exits before Life got hot. Until that point, Life was 0-for-6 from the floor and had yet to score. But he made six consecutive free throws to make it 44-32. Paul Johnson scored inside for La Salle, but Life knocked down an NBA 3-pointer to answer.

Life stripped Jermaine Thomas at the other end and pulled up for another 3-pointer, a step further back than the one before.

Both teams went two minutes without scoring before Life buried another 3-pointer, this time from the corner to complete his own 15-2 run that made it 46-41 and brought the Mullins Center to life.

'None of us were playing well, especially myself,' Life said. 'I decided to step up and see what happened. It didn't work out.'

But after an official time-out, the Explorers regrouped and delivered a knockout punch. Led by Northborough native Mike St. John, La Salle ran off 16 straight points to pull ahead 62-41 and clinch the win.

'Plain and simple, no one on our basketball team played well,' UMass coach Travis Ford said. 'It wasn't that they didn't compete or play hard. They just didn't play well. That pretty much sums it up.'

UMass fell to .500 overall (10-10) and in the Atlantic 10 (5-5). The Minutemen play their final nonconference game of the season at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Florida State.

La Salle (14-7, 6-4 A-10), which swept the season series, is at Xavier at noon Saturday.

'I'm extremely pleased with our team's effort, which I thought was tremendous,' La Salle coach John Giannini said. 'I'm so proud of our team getting a win in a place that's been so tough for so many teams.'

Both teams' highly touted big men had off nights, but Steve Smith's supporting cast was much better than Rashaun Freeman's.

Smith finished with 10 points, but spent most of the second half on the bench with four fouls. Darnell Harris led the Explorers with 14 points, St. John added 13 and Jermaine Thomas scored a dozen.

Freeman had 11 rebounds, but missed all eight shots from the field and finished with four points. It was his first career game without a field goal.

'He battled. He was in there crashing the offensive glass,' Ford said. 'But he had a bad night. Everybody did. ... They played well and we did not play well. We got nothing from anybody.'

While Freeman's struggles hurt, the lack of Chris Lowe at 100 percent might have hurt worse. The freshman point guard turned his right ankle during the shoot-around and was noticeably limping the whole game. He played 30 minutes, but wasn't himself.

Freeman wasn't alone in his offensive struggles. At one point, the Minutemen went 17:48 between field goals, a stretch that crossed intermission. They shot 23.5 percent (12-for-51) from the field in the game.

Still their defense might have kept them alive if they could have kept the Explorers off the offensive glass. Several times in the course of the game, UMass forced a bad La Salle shot late in the possession, but an Explorer rebound kept it alive.

'That was huge,' Giannini said. 'That's what UMass usually does to other people.'

'It's very frustrating,' senior Jeff Viggiano said. 'You're tiring yourself out playing an extra 35 seconds of defense and giving them an extra shot. If they get enough shots, they're bound to make them eventually.'

The first half was ugly on both ends as the teams combined to shoot 27 percent. UMass led 15-9 with nine minutes played, but La Salle ran off 13 straight and never trailed again.

Lowe injured
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 2/9/2006

AMHERST -- If Wednesday's result wasn't bad enough, the University of Massachusetts could be without Chris Lowe for a stretch.

The freshman point guard sprained his right ankle in the shoot-around prior to Wednesday's 65-44 loss to La Salle. Lowe convinced coach Travis Ford to let him play and hobbled through 30 minutes.

Ford said he regretted using him.

'I wish I hadn't played him. It wasn't worth it now. It was a tough gutty performance by him. He probably played at about 60 percent,' Ford said. 'I planned not to play him until he went through warm-ups and said he was OK. He's a huge, huge, key to our basketball team.'

Lowe admitted he was limited, but wasn't sorry he played.

'I was at 40 or 50 percent,' he said. 'It was real hard, but once you step on the court, you've dedicated yourself to something, so you can't really think about the ankle. I was just thinking about helping my team win. I'd play again. I don't regret nothing.'

Ford said Lowe could miss Sunday's game at Florida State.

'I'm worried about that game,' Ford said.

If Lowe can't go, the Minutemen would likely turn to junior wing Brandon Thomas, who struggled in the role of point guard. Senior Jeff Viggiano briefly played the point in UMass' first game against La Salle. Walk-on Drew Rossi could see minutes as well.

HISTORIC WOES - UMass has full box scores dating back only to the 1979-80 season. Wednesday's shooting percentage (23.5, 12-for-51) and total field goals were the worst since then.

The Minutemen had just 13 field goals in a 43-39 loss at St. Bonaventure on Jan. 29, 1987. They shot 25.4 percent in a 54-51 loss to Ohio State on Dec. 10, 2000.

The 44 points per the fewest since a 64-44 loss at Xavier Feb. 14, 2004.

FREEMAN STRUGGLES - Rashaun Freeman's four points matched his career low. He's had four points on four previous occasions.

It was his first game without a field goal. He had one field goal against Rhode Island as a freshman.

The four points did move him into a tie with Rafer Giles at No. 23 on the UMass all-time scoring list at 1,163 career points. Next is John Murphy (1,184).

NEXT UP - The Minutemen play their final nonconference game of the season Sunday at 5:30 p.m. when they complete their home-and-home series with Florida State.

The Seminoles (13-6) host Georgia Tech at 7 tonight.

MISCELLANEOUS - James Life has scored in double figures in five straight games. He's averaging 16.6 points per game in that stretch and has lifted his season scoring average to 10.9 points per game.

Sean Neal of Springfield played six minutes for the Explorers Wednesday. He passed up the chance to score close to home as he held the ball and let the clock run out in the final seconds.

La Salle wins to guarantee non-losing season
Compiled by The Philadelphia Inquirer Staff, 2/9/2006

AMHERST, Mass. - La Salle earned what might have been its most important win in John Giannini's two seasons as head coach.

The Explorers (6-4 in the Atlantic Ten) dusted off Massachusetts, 65-44, last night at the Mullins Center to improve to 14-7 overall. That eliminates the possibility of a losing record, meaning La Salle will finish at .500 or better for the first time since the 1992-93 season.

"I'm really pleased," Giannini said. "It was a significant game for a lot of reasons. It broke their [13-game] home winning streak, so we were able to do something others struggled with.

"It keeps us in the top half of the Atlantic Ten standings.

"And it clinches the first non-losing season in 12 years. It's always important to show progress. It was critical for us to move ahead."

The first half was anything but, as both teams struggled with turnovers and poor shooting.

But the Explorers gradually expanded a five-point halftime advantage to 18 points, taking a 44-26 lead with 12 minutes, 16 seconds to play.

At that point, however, the roof nearly fell in.

James Life scored six straight free throws and three three-pointers for Massachusetts (10-10, 5-5 A-10) on a 15-2 run to cut the La Salle lead to 46-41 with 7:48 to play.

The Explorers got a layup off an inbound pass by Paul Johnson, which seemed to break the Minutemen's momentum, and La Salle went on a 16-0 run to make it 62-41 with a little more than two minutes left.

While emphasizing that the win was a team effort, Giannini pointed out that UMass center Rashaun Freeman had just four points, all on free throws.

"Freeman had zero field goals," the coach said. "A lot of people, myself included, think he's the best low-post player in the conference.

"Mike St. John and Lewis Fadipe played unbelievable defense. They did not allow him to get the ball, and when he did, it was in a tough spot.

"It really was an outstanding team effort. When you hold them to 23 percent from the field, it means you really worked hard."

La Salle, which has won four straight, got 14 points from Darnell Harris, 13 from St. John, 12 from Jermaine Thomas, and 10 from Steven Smith.

Life led the Minutemen with 18, while Freeman pulled down 11 rebounds.
