Lowe unlikely to play Sunday

he Massachusetts men's basketball team (10-10, 5-5 Atlantic 10) got a reminder of just how important Chris Lowe is in Wednesday's 65-44 loss to La Salle (14-7, 6-4 Atlantic 10). The freshman point guard played 30 minutes, but was hobbled by a sprained right ankle that he suffered earlier in the day in the team shoot-around.
Lowe scored just two points and handed out only three assists, and the UMass offense looked out of sorts all night, connecting on just 12 of 51 field goal attempts.
While the team struggled without Lowe at full strength against a decent La Salle team, it's downright frightening to think of what could happen on Sunday if Lowe is not healthy when UMass faces a far stronger Florida State squad in Tallahassee.
The Seminoles (13-6, 4-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) are coming off of a 97-96 overtime loss at No. 2 Duke on Saturday. Sunday's tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and the game will be televised nationally by the Fox Sports Network.
Lowe, who was noticeably limping yesterday prior to practice, will not participate in practice before Sunday's game and, as was the case Wednesday, his availability will be a game-time decision.
"Whether he plays on Sunday will be determined on Sunday," UMass coach Travis Ford said. "If he can go through shoot-around I'll probably play him, but if he can't go through shoot-around, it's not a game that I want to try to make it worse."
Whether Lowe plays is one thing, how effective he will be if he does is an entirely different issue. After the La Salle game, Lowe said that he only felt about 40 to 50 percent. With Sunday's game meaningless to the team's A-10 standings, it would not come as a huge surprise if Lowe does not suit up, as the conference stretch run begins on Wednesday at No. 8 George Washington.
If Lowe, who is fourth in the A-10 in assists with 4.5 per game, can't go on Sunday, Ford doesn't have many options to replace him. He will most likely turn first to junior Brandon Thomas, as he is the only other scholarship player on the roster to see time at the point this season.
Thomas struggled in three starts at point guard in early January, and therefore Ford will explore all of his options in the next three days.
"We don't have a point guard if Chris isn't playing," Ford said. "It's going to be by committee. Brandon probably has the edge, but James Life can bring it up, Jeff Viggiano can bring it up and we've even talked about Lawrence Carrier bringing it up. We're going to experiment in the next couple of days."
For Lowe, or whoever is his replacement at the point, to be successful, UMass will need to execute better offensively.
"To watch our offense is not a pretty sight at all right now," Ford said. "Whether it's the point guard or anybody at this point - after [Wednesday] night's performance, you really just want to go home and puke."
VIDEO BOARDS ON THE WAY
There has been much speculation about when the new video boards would be installed in the Mullins Center. Yesterday, the old boards were in the process of being taken down, clearing the way to put up the new scoreboards.
The boards will be ready for next Friday night's hockey game when UMass hosts Vermont. The next home men's basketball game is not until Feb. 22 against Charlotte.
The women's basketball team will play St. Bonaventure at home on Sunday, but the new video boards will not be in use for that game. The auxiliary boards that were recently added midway up the arena on each side of the court will be used for that game.
When the new video boards are up and running, the auxiliary boards will still be used, as they will always display the time and score, while the video boards will feature advertisements and other features during breaks in play.
Lowe's status unclear

MHERST -- Freshman point guard Chris Lowe, who hobbled through Wednesday's 65-44 loss to La Salle with a sprained ankle, won't know if he will play Sunday at Florida State until shortly before the game's 5:30 tip-off.
"It's not as bad as I thought it would be. It is more swollen. I'll definitely keep him out of practice the next couple days," UMass coach Travis Ford said Thursday. ''Whether he plays on Sunday will be determined on Sunday. I probably will not practice him until then.
''If can go through shoot-around (Sunday) I'll probably play him. But it's not a game I want to try to make it worse,'' said Ford, who said he would be more cautious because it's a nonconference game.
''My thing is if there is no swelling, I'll let Kevin (Avilla) our trainer give me the lead on what to do,'' Ford added. ''For him to play I don't want there to be any swelling.''
With Lowe not practicing, Ford said he planned to come up with a game plan in case the freshman can't play and to improve the team's offense in general.
''It's difficult to watch our offense period. Watching our offense right now is not a pretty sight,'' Ford said. ''After (Wednesday) night's performance, I just wanted to go home and puke.''
VIDEO ON THE WAY _The installation of the new video boards has begun at the Mullins Center.
They are expected to be ready for the ice hockey game against Vermont at 7 p.m. Feb. 17. The first basketball games after that are at 2 p.m. Feb. 19 when the Minutewomen play St. Bonaventure and at 7 p.m. Feb. 22 when the Minutemen take on Charlotte.
BOWERS STILL AROUND - Former Minuteman guard Artie Bowers stopped by the Mullins Center before Thursday's practice. Bowers, who decided to transfer earlier in the season, is enrolled in classes at UMass this spring. He plans to transfer during the summer.
Bowers will have to sit out next year wherever he transfers and will have one year of eligibility remaining.

Ford's goal is to reduced mistakes

MHERST -- Before heading into practice Thursday, University of Massachusetts coach Travis Ford said he wasn't as focused on winning at Florida State at 5:30 p.m. Sunday as he was on improving his team's play.
'Let's play well. I don't want to say we have to beat Florida State,' Ford said. 'Let's start playing better basketball and start cutting down on mistakes. Then we might find ourselves in position where we might be able to beat a very good basketball team on the road.
'I just want to focus on playing well and playing to our strengths,' Ford added. 'Hopefully that will go hand in hand with these guys. I might play a few psychological games with these guys, but they probably won't pay any attention to it.'
Psychological games likely won't make as much difference as the presence or absence of Chris Lowe. The freshman point guard sprained his ankle before Wednesday's 65-44 loss to La Salle and is questionable for Sunday. UMass is now 10-10 and Florida State is its final nonconference game of the season.
Ford said he wasn't sure if Brandon Thomas, who has struggled at point this year, would move back to that position if Lowe can't go.
'Right now I'd say it's going to be by committee. Brandon probably has the edge, but James Life could bring it up. Jeff Viggiano could bring it up. I've even thought about Lawrence Carrier bringing it up. He's got good skills,' Ford said. 'Guys have to do it by committee. Maybe we'll have Stephane try to bring it up.'
He was presumably joking about Lasme, but other than Lowe nobody is a natural point guard.
'We worked last week a little bit with other guys bringing it up,' Ford said. 'We don't have a point guard if Chris isn't playing. We knew that when I put Brandon in the bad position of trying to be our point guard. We'll experiment over the next couple of days because Chris won't be practicing over the next couple of days.'
Thomas is willing to play point guard or any other role asked of him.
'It's kind of whatever the coaches need me to do at this point. However I can help the team out, I'm willing to step up and help,' Thomas said Thursday. 'I know Chris was hurt. He was real tough (Wednesday) trying to fight through it. If he needs a rest, I'll be glad to step in.'
Thomas, who started the season strong, has struggled lately as his role and position have been inconsistent.
'It's been difficult, but my teammates and coaches have helped me through it. You have to stay focused and be willing to play hard,' said Thomas who rejected the theory that he'd be better concentrating on one position. 'I like being versatile. I'd rather adapt to numerous roles than just one.'
Thomas said he expects his play to come around.
'I do feel like that's going to come. I hope it's going to come soon,' he said. 'It's been a roller coaster. Hopefully it'll click soon.'
Florida State hasn't clicked much lately. The Seminoles are 14-6 overall, but 3-4 in their last seven including a loss at No. 2 Duke in overtime.

Florida State 73, Massachusetts 63

ALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Alexander Johnson scored 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds Sunday as Florida State pulled away in the second half to take a 73-63 victory over Massachusetts.
The 6-10 Johnson dunked on his own miss with 10:59 left to give the Seminoles a 47-45 lead - and they never looked back on their way to consecutive victories for the first time in a month, leading by as many as 16 at 72-56 with 2:53 left.
Johnson, who has had four double-doubles in the last five games, made 9 of 10 free throws, and the Seminoles connected of 19 of 21 tries at the line to go along with 48.9 percent shooting from the floor.
Florida State (15-6) used a 12-0 midway through the game to build a 38-31 lead, but UMass (10-11) countered with a 14-4 run of its own capped by James Life's 3-point shot that gave the Minutemen a 45-42 lead with 13:13 left.
Life, a transfer from Manatee Community College who played his prep ball at Mariner High School in Leigh Acres, led UMass with 14 points. Jeff Viggiano added 11, Brandon Thomas and Dante Mulligan 10 apiece for the Minutemen.
Al Thornton finished with 16 for Florida State and senior point guard Todd Galloway had 11.

Mass had four players in double-figures led by James Life (14). It was the sixth game in a row which Life reached double-figures. He is averaging 16.2 over his last six games. It was Life's 11th gamewith 10 or more points this season.
* Jeff Viggiano returned to double-figures for the first time in five games with 11 points. He had scored just 13 total points in his last four games. It was Viggiano's 10th game in double-figures this season and 36th of his career.
* Viggiano played in his 99th career game and will reach 100 on Wednesday at George Washington.
* Dante Milligan scored in double-figures for the second time this season with 10 points on a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor. He also grabbed seven rebounds before fouling out in 18 minutes. Milligan had scored in double-figures once before against Saint Joseph's on Jan. 11.
* In his first start since Jan. 14 at Saint Louis, Brandon Thomas scored in double-figures for the first time since Jan. 7 as he had 10 points. Thomas drew the start after coming off the bench for seven straight games. Thomas had scored just 16 points over the last eight games (2.0 ppg).
* UMass had its three-game win streak in the series with Florida State ended. The Minutemen lead the series 3-2. FSU's other win came in 1992, the only other game between the teams in Tallahassee.
* UMass has now dropped three of its last four games vs. ACC teams losing to Boston College earlier this year at Miami last season sandwiched around the win over Florida State (78-68) last season on Feb. 15.
* UMass shot 52.1 percent from the floor, its highest shooting 50.9 percent vs. Fordham on Jan. 18.
Road struggles continue at FSU

uch has changed since the last meeting between the Massachusetts men's basketball team (10-11, 5-6 Atlantic 10) and the Florida State Seminoles (15-6, 5-5 Atlantic Coast Conference). In last year's 78-68 UMass win at the Mullins Center, Steve Lappas roamed the UMass sidelines, sophomore Maurice Maxwell scored a game-high 19 points and classmate Art Bowers dropped 12 points and seven assists in the UMass victory.

A year later, Bowers and Maxwell are gone, Travis Ford has taken over for Lappas and the roles have reversed - the Seminoles won by 10 this time, and they handled the Minutemen last night 73-63 on the back of some sharp-shooting: Florida State shot 53 percent from 3-point land on 8-of-15 shooting and hit an impressive 90 percent from the free-throw line (19-21).
"I'm disappointed we lost," UMass coach Travis Ford said. "But I think that we made a step in the right direction. I thought we played better than we had in a while."
The Minutemen will be back in action against A-10 leader and No. 8-ranked George Washington on the road on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
Senior Jeff Viggiano led UMass with 11 points in the game, followed by a solid performance by Dante Milligan, who had 10 points with seven boards on 5-of-5 shooting. Junior Brandon Thomas started strong with seven points in the first nine minutes of action, but only added three more points over the rest of the game.
The score was tied at 45 just a few minutes into the second half. Junior James Life had just hit two straight 3-pointers and the Minutemen were hanging with the Seminoles on the offensive end. But Florida State turned on the defensive pressure and UMass looked lost. The Minutemen began to lose steam and the Seminoles continued to push the gas pedal.
"We went on a few offensive droughts that I was disappointed in," Ford said. "We made a few mental mistakes, turning it over against their pressure - things that we've worked on."
From the 9:03 mark to the 6:33 mark in the second half, Florida State went on a 10-2 run, punctuated by two devastating 3-pointers by Florida State's John Galloway and Andrew Wilson, handing the Minutemen a 61-49 deficit to overcome in the waning minutes.
"I thought Florida State had to play one of their best games to beat us," Ford said. "When two teams play well, and Florida State is a better team than us, the better team is probably going to win and I think it was one of those situations."
UMass scored four straight points to get within eight points at 61-53, but Florida State - which went on an 8-2 run after that to push the lead to 14 at 69-55 - was too much to handle.
Thomas, who averaged just two points per game in his previous eight outings, got off to an inspired start, scoring the seven points in the early goings. He was more aggressive, attacking the rim and shooting with confidence, and the junior transfer seemed at ease for the first time since being removed from the starting lineup.
"Brandon was very aggressive and attacked the basket with some nice moves," Ford said.
The Seminoles finished the half on a 9-0 run to take a 35-31 lead into the break. Viggiano and Thomas (3-of-7 from the field, 1-of-2 from 3-point land) led the Minutemen in scoring with seven points each at halftime.
After an FSU 3-pointer, the Minutemen went on an 8-0 run to take a one-point lead at 39-38, but the momentum soon swung to Florida State after the Seminoles inserted some pressure defenses.
Late run gets Seminoles past UMass

ALLAHASSEE, Fla. - For the first time in his coaching career, University of Massachusetts coach Travis Ford tried to slow the game down Sunday, hoping to negate Florida State's proficient fast break.

The strategy worked for a while as the Minutemen led by three with 13 minutes, 13 seconds remaining, but the Seminoles finally found the accelerator. They ran off a 19-4 spurt and UMass couldn't recover as Florida State prevailed 73-63 at the Donald L. Tucker Center.
'Our whole game plan was to try to keep them out of the fast break, out of the open court,' Ford said. 'I told our team, 'It's the first time I've ever done this, but we are going to slow this game down to a crawl.' '
The loss was the Minutemen's fifth in their last six games and fifth straight on the road, but Ford believes his team made progress.
'You're never happy with losing, but I thought our team came in and competed against a Florida State (15-6) team that played great,' Ford said. 'I think our team made a little bit of a stride tonight because we haven't been playing that well in the last couple games. When you play against a team that's better than you, that plays a great game in their home gym, you're probably not going to come out on the W side. They had to play really well because we played one of our better games of late.'
UMass (10-11) returns to Atlantic 10 play at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when it travels to Washington, D.C., to face No. 8 George Washington.
James Life reached double figures for the sixth straight game to lead the Minutemen. He didn't start for disciplinary reasons, but had 14 points off the bench in his return to his home state. Dante Milligan scored 10 points and seven rebounds. Jeff Viggiano added 11 points, while Brandon Thomas scored 10.
Alexander Johnson led the Seminoles with 13 points and 13 rebounds, while Al Thornton added 16.
Chris Lowe, whose status was questionable Saturday, not only played, but looked pretty good. In 37 minutes, including the entire second half, Lowe had six points and four assists. The second number could have been bigger if his teammates had made more open shots.
He was hobbled a little by the ankle he sprained Wednesday and wasn't as quick as normal. But Lowe was not overwhelmed despite a consistent press used by Florida State.
'He didn't practice at all the past three days, but he came out and competed and did his job,' Ford said. 'That was a gutsy performance by a freshman. I was happy with him.'
Lowe said the ankle wasn't bad.
'It's a little sore, a little tender. It's OK,' Lowe said after the game. 'I was really pleased to be able to go. It felt good enough that I was able to practice (at Sunday's shoot-around). I went out and did the best I could.'
UMass started the game strong, led by Thomas who started in place of Life. Thomas shook off recent scoring troubles and had seven points in the first 8:30 as the Minutemen led 18-14.
Minuteman foul trouble forced the featured inside battle between Rashaun Freeman and Stephane Lasme of UMass and Johnson and Thornton to be replaced by Milligan and Lawrence Carrier taking on the Seminole duo.
The backup frontcourt held its own at first for the Minutemen. UMass actually scored six straight points after Lasme picked up his second foul, but Florida State ended the half on a 9-0 run and led 35-31 at intermission.

Freeman stuck in scoring slump

ALLAHASSEE, Fla. - With just over nine minutes left in Sunday's game, University of Massachusetts sophomore forward Dante Milligan picked up his fourth foul and came to the bench.

UMass coach Travis Ford paused for a moment and instead of sending all-conference forward and leading scorer Rashaun Freeman into the game, he opted for Lawrence Carrier.
Out of context, it looked like an odd move, but Freeman's recent struggles made it the logical choice.
The Minuteman big man finished the 73-63 loss with three points and four rebounds, one game after he had four points and missed all eight field goal attempts against La Salle. He has been in double figures only four of the last eight games.
'I don't know what it is,' Freeman said 'The only thing I can do is keep my head up, continue to work hard in practice and think positive. It's not always going to be like this. I just have to remain focused. I'm the type of player that if I start out well everything flows. But if I don't, I'm not as effective. It's two bad games in a row. I just have to stay focused and have two good practices to get ready for the George Washington game.'
Ford chose to look at the bright side. 'Rashaun Freeman's been a great player for our basketball team, but you have to be excited when other guys step up,' Ford said. 'Florida State was fronting and they did a good job taking away our post play.'
Freeman's extended bench time allowed Dante Milligan to have his best game in a while. The sophomore big man had 10 points on 5-for-5 shooting and seven rebounds.
'Dante was active out there,' Ford said. 'When he's active and played with energy, he makes things happen out there.'
LIFE DISCIPLINED - Junior guard James Life didn't start for disciplinary reasons and was replaced in the lineup by Brandon Thomas.
Life, a native of Fort Myers, Fla., who needed almost 30 tickets for friends and family from home, played 24 minutes and led the Minutemen with 14 points.
'He was 5-for-12, which isn't bad because he does like to shoot a lot,' Ford said. 'He isn't shy. I love the way he plays with emotion. I like his energy level. He was ready to play.'
Life refused to comment after the game. 'Sorry, I don't want to say anything,' he said.
NEXT UP - The Minutemen continue the 'Bush Road Trip' going from the state governed by Jeb Bush to the nation's capital where George Bush is president.
UMass faces No. 8 George Washington at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Colonials are off to the best start in school history at 20-1.
UMASS vs. ACC, FSU - The loss ended the Minutemen's three-game winning streak against the Seminoles. UMass fell to 9-5 in its last 14 games against Atlantic Coast Conference schools.
NOT SO SUNNY - The Sunshine State hasn't been good to the Minutemen in the past two years as UMass lost two games by a combined score of 153-126. The Minutemen fell at Miami 80-53 last season.
POSTSEASON - Sunday's loss means the Minutemen will need a strong push just to finish above .500 to be eligible for the National Invitation Tournament. UMass needs at least four more wins in its final six regular-season and subsequent Atlantic 10 Tournament games to ensure itself of at least a .500 finish. It would likely need more than that to earn an invitation to the NIT.
COACHES Vs. CANCER - Ford and the rest of the UMass coaching staff all wore sneakers with their suits as part of the awareness campaign for Coaches vs. Cancer. Coaches around the nation wore sneakers during games this weekend.
MISCELLANEOUS - Thomas' 10 points snapped a nine-game streak of single-digit scoring. All five of his games with 10 or more points have come as a starter. ... The Minutemen are 1-3 this season when they played on national television. ... The temperature was in the high 50s in Massachusetts when Florida State played at Boston College on Jan. 14. It was in the low 40s in Tallahassee for Sunday's game.

ear the midway point of the second half of Sunday's basketball game between Florida State and Massachusetts, it was still anyone's game. That's when Alexander Johnson decided to make it his.

The junior forward helped ignite a 16-4 run with 10:59 remaining when he followed his own miss - an underhanded toss off the glass - with a thunderous dunk, and the Seminoles went on to claim a 73-63 victory in the non-conference clash at the Civic Center.
Johnson scored six points during that decisive spurt and finished with his fifth double-double of the season, scoring 17 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.
�To see Al (Thornton) go off just about every night, I think he wants a part of that, too,� said guard Isaiah Swann of Johnson, smiling. �For us to have two guys in there that can score at any time, that's big.�
A one-two punch is exactly what FSU (15-6, 5-5 ACC) had going for it against UMass as Thornton scored 16 points. Their combined aggressiveness led them to the foul line, where the two players combined to make 14 of 16 free throws.
But it was that late surge - fueled by full-court pressure - that made the difference. The Seminoles, who had trouble pulling ahead by more than two baskets for most of the night, weren't threatened again.
�We knew going into the game that we were going to have to press,� said FSU head coach Leonard Hamilton, who said he expected that Massachusetts would try to slow the pace of the game to counter FSU's superior depth and athleticism.
Massachusetts (10-11, 5-5 Atlantic 10) had early success attacking the basket with dribble penetration, but the visitors still faltered on the offensive end because they couldn't convert open looks from behind the 3-point arc. Overall, the Minutemen shot 52.1 percent for the game but made only 5 of 19 treys (26.3 percent).
The Seminoles, meanwhile, slowly began hitting on all cylinders. With point guard Todd Galloway leading the outside effort by making three of four 3-pointers, FSU made a combined eight of 15 from behind the arc.
Swann said the Minutemen had no choice but to pick their poison once Johnson and Thornton began to dominate the paint. When the UMass guards helped double inside, Galloway, Swann and Andrew Wilson made them pay.
Galloway finished with 11 points, while Jason Rich added 9, Andrew Wilson scored eight and Swann added six.
�I knew we couldn't guard them one-on-one, which is why we played a lot of zone,� said Massachusetts coach Travis Ford. �Where we got in trouble was not on the break, but when they gave us defensive pressure, and we didn't handle it very well.�
After trailing much of the first half, the Seminoles used a 9-0 run to claim a 35-31 lead at the break. Tacking on a 3-pointer in the early seconds of the second half, Swann increased the edge to seven points - FSU's largest lead at that point.
UMass scored the next eight points to regain the lead at 39-38. It swung back and forth for the next few minutes until a 45-45 tie led Ford to call a timeout.
Johnson, who came into the season without any double-doubles, took it from there.
�He's learning how to play aggressive without fouling,� said Hamilton. �It's part of the learning process. He's a little more patient.�
