MHERST - Don't tell Travis Ford that tonight doesn't count.
The University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach is treating tonight's exhibition game against Dowling College just like another game he wants his team to win, even if it won't show up in any standings.
The only thing I'm worried about is Dowling College and how to beat Dowling. We approach it that way, Ford said. 'We played Seton Hall the other day and we wanted to win. We prepared to win the basketball game and we were successful. We want to prepare to win every day, whether it's a scrimmage game or somebody else.'
The Minutemen play Division II Dowling at 7 p.m. in the Mullins Center in their only public exhibition before the Nov. 18 opener at home against Hartford.
A year ago, the most reliable way to beat Dowling was to show up. The Golden Lions went 5-22 and didn't qualify for the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.
With only two players at 6-foot-7, Dowling will likely throw a zone against the Minutemen to counter their considerable height advantage
Michael Session is the Golden Lions' leading returning scorer and rebounder with 15.1 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. He was a preseason NYCAC first team selection. Guard Chris Green is a transfer from Division I Stony Brook.
Senior guard Keith Willis played two seasons at Holyoke Community College before transferring to Dowling.
Fans will get their first look at four new Minutemen, at least three of whom are assured of playing. Ford's well-regarded recruiting class of freshman Chris Lowe and juniors James Life and Brandon Thomas will meet the Mullins crowd for the first time, as will student manager turned walk-on forward Matt Pennie.
Ford said while the game won't likely reveal how good or bad the Minutemen are going to be this season, it will give the fans a glimpse of the team's style.
'What people are going to get out of it is this, is the way we're going to play,' Ford said. 'All the scholarship players will play. Who plays the most minutes will be determined by how they're playing that day.'
STOPPER? - Ford has praised the development of junior guard Artie Bowers throughout the preseason. A large portion of that improvement has come defensively.
'Artie Bowers has proven to be a pretty good defender when he wants to be,' Ford said. 'Right now if I had to put somebody on a good guard, it would probably be Artie.'
RULE CHANGES - In addition to new Minutemen, fans will get their first look at these new rules this year:
Previously when a defensive player intentionally kicked the ball, the shot clock would be reset to the full 35. This season if the violation happens with more than 15 seconds remaining on the shot clock, it won't be reset. If there are fewer than 15, the clock will be reset to 15.
When a player fouls out, a team will now have only 20 seconds to replace him instead of 30.
Officials will now be allowed to consult a television monitor to determine whether there was time remaining after a foul was called at the end of either half.
OFFICIAL RPI - After several media outlets (CBS Sportline, ESPN and CollegeRPI.com among them) tried to replicate the Ratings Percentage Index, the computer tool for determining selection and seeding in the NCAA Tournament, the NCAA decided to release the rankings every week beginning in January.

MHERST, Mass. - Junior forward Brandon Thomas (San Antonio, Texas) started the Travis Ford era off with a bang, opening with a break-away dunk and leading the team in scoring with 19 points, as the Minutemen cruised to a 96-55 victory over Division II Dowling Thursday night in a preseason exhibition matchup.
In the first half, Thomas lead the team in scoring, while junior forward Stephane Lasme (Libreville, Gabon) helped maintain the Minutemen's opening lead with stellar defense, blocking 2 shots, and junior guard James Life (Leigh Acres, Fla.) stretched the early lead with two consecutive three-pointers with about five minutes remaining in the first half. UMass lead by 26 at the end of the first half after junior guard Art Bowers (Wilmington, Del.) stole the ball at mid-court and took it to the hoop all alone to end the period.
Dowling was lad in scoring by Keith Willis and Reheim Lowery, both with 11 points. However, the Golden Lions turned the ball over 36 times. The Minuteman did not let up in the second half, as they continued to be dominant on offense and defense.
Throughout the game junior center Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y) was a force at both ends of the court with 15 points, nine rebounds, and four assists.
UMass would have set a new record for most steals (23) in a game had this been a regular season game. UMass' 23 steals was two more than the record of 21.
Life also contributed to the UMass cause with 17 points. Life was 6-11 from the floor including 5-9 from beyond the three point arc. In addition to Thomas, Freeman, and Life, UMass had two other players with double digits in scoring as junior forward Lawrence Carrier (San Bernardino, Calif.) had 13 points and Lasme scored 11.
UMass will open its regular season on Friday November 18 at home against Hartford. Game time is set for 7:00pm.
ead Coach Travis Ford on his team's overall play:
"Our hard work and our style of play is what made us succeed tonight. It wasn't necessarily our shooting, wasn't necessarily taking care of the ball. There's a cause of concern for turning over the ball 21 times, allowing them to get to the free throw line 35 times, and only out-rebounding them by one. But, I thought we executed the way we want to play as far as 94 feet for 40 minutes."
Ford on playing in a blowout game:
"There will be no more of these games ... play time is over."
Ford on James Life's shooting:
"He deserves to make them. You've got to see how hard he works every day. I've never been around a player who works on his shot as much as he does. He deserves to make them. He's the first player in the gym every single day."
Ford on transfers James Life and Brandon Thomas:
"They still have a long way to go to get to our expectations. But, as long as they stay humble, stay hungry, and they keep working as hard as they do, they're all right."
Rashaun Freeman on what the team needs to work on:
"We need to learn to move our feet more, if we can improve on that, and play with the same intensity level, we'll be a tough team to beat."
Brandon Thomas on his first game at UMass:
"I was never in this great environment, with this great big school, so it's still kind of overwhelming. But I have my teammates helping me out, we're getting better everyday."
Maurice Maxwell on Coach Ford motivating James Life
"Coach was mad at him because he knows James is a great shooter and he can be a complete player...After that James played better, Coach acknowledged that, and the whole team played better."
Brandon Thomas on what the team needs to work on:
"We sent them to the line too many times. If they hit all of their free throws the game would have been a lot different."
MHERST - With eight minutes, 35 seconds left in the first half, James Life and Travis Ford learned a little bit about each other. Life and the rest of the University of Massachusetts basketball team learned that when Ford's suit jacket comes off, the coach is mad. Ford learned that Life responds well to aggressive instruction.
After calling a 30 second time-out, everyone in the arena knew Ford was angry. Life got the message.
''He basically told me you're not going to play if you're not going to get in position and rebound. I made sure next time I did,'' Life said.
The junior college transfer guard played well after that and finished with 17 points, including five 3-pointers, as the Minutemen crushed Division II Dowling College 96-55 at the Mullins Center.
''He had two possessions of defense I wasn't happy with and he did respond,'' Ford said. ''He could have folded after I got onto him a little bit. He's still learning and he's working to become a more complete basketball player.
''James needs to be more than just a shooter,'' Ford added. ''I know he can shoot the basketball. That's a great strength and we need that. Obviously we're not the greatest shooting team in the world. We need him to play defense and get in there and rebound a little bit.''
Life said he responds well to instruction at high decibels.
''My high school coach was real tough,'' he said. ''I think I play better under a lot of pressure and a lot of yelling.''
Ford said Life performed his primary function well.
''The reason we brought James Life here is to make shots. If you look at stats from last year, there weren't many shooters. That's why we were excited to get James,'' Ford said. ''He deserves to make 'em. I've never been around a player who works on his shot as much as he does. He's the first player in the gym every single day.''
SYSTEM ON DISPLAY - UMass fans got their first look at Ford's up-and-down style. The Minuteman press created 36 turnovers on 23 steals and turned them into 43 points.
STARTERS - Ford promised his starting lineup will change regularly, but he went with Rashaun Freeman and Stephane Lasme inside, Maurice Maxwell at point guard and Artie Bowers and Brandon Thomas on the wings.
Thomas led all scorers with 19 points, while Freeman added 15 points and nine rebounds. Lasme has four blocks and three steals to go along with his 11 points and nine rebounds.
Lawrence Carrier had 13 points off the bench.
OPENER ON DECK - The Minutemen will host Hartford at 7 p.m. Nov. 18 and Ford expects a much different game.
''There'll be no more like these. Basically play time is over,'' he said. ''Nothing against Dowling College, they played extremely hard tonight and I think they're going to have a fine season, but we did what we were supposed to do. We didn't do anything outstanding other than play hard.''
FOUL TROUBLES - The Minutemen were whistled for 26 fouls and sent Dowling to the free throw line 35 times.
''When you play the style we play, you can't foul people as much as we're fouling because it slows the game down and it negates your hustle,'' Ford said. ''It negates what you're trying to do - make the game faster and make the other team try to rush. We have to move our feet rather than playing with our hands and it's evident that we're out of position because teams that are out of position defensively, foul. We probably got caught out of position tonight.''
LOWE DEBUT - Minuteman freshman point guard Chris Lowe had two points, six assists, three steals and five turnovers in 19 minutes.
''Chris Lowe had his ups and downs, typical freshman,'' Ford said. ''He made some great moves in the lane and nice passes at times, but he had five turnovers. He's still learning. The big thing for him is to keep learning and absorbing knowledge from me, the coaching staff and his teammates.''
A-10 in A.C. - The transient Atlantic 10 Tournament will be on the move again. The league announced Thursday that the 2007 and 2008 tournaments will be held at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, a venue best known for hosting the Miss America Pageant.

hursday night marked the beginning of the Travis Ford era at the Mullins Center, and the Massachusetts men's basketball team came out ready to play right from the opening tip - literally.
UMass controlled the tip-off, and junior Brandon Thomas immediately took a pass from junior Rashaun Freeman and raced down the court for a dunk. The play was a sign of things to come, as the Minutemen completely overmatched Division II Dowling, rolling to a 96-55 win in front of 2,415 fans.
The game was dominated by the new faces to the program, as the fiery Ford paced the sidelines the entire game, and his signature full-court press forced 36 turnovers, which UMass converted into 43 points.
Thomas, a transfer playing in his first game on the Mullins hardwood, led the Minutemen in scoring with 19 points, and junior James Life, another transfer, displayed a shooting touch that UMass was sorely lacking last year, netting 15 of his 17 points from beyond the arc.
And while everything went UMass' way on Thursday, Ford was well aware that his team will face much stiffer competition in the regular season, beginning on Friday night at 7 p.m. when the Minutemen host Hartford in the season-opener.
"There will be no more of these games," Ford stressed after the game. "My whole postgame talk was basically that play time is over. We did what we were supposed to do - we were supposed to beat them by 40-plus. We didn't do anything outstanding other than play hard."
While there were a lot of positives for the Maroon and White, most notably shooting (51 percent from the field, 40 percent on three-pointers) and defense, there were also a few red flags raised.
The biggest concern for the Minutemen was on the glass, as they only out-rebounded the Golden Lions by one, despite having a considerable size advantage. UMass allowed Dowling 24 offensive boards, a result of some of the players not recovering from the press to get in position to rebound.
Life, in particular, was guilty of not getting back in position on two consecutive possessions late in the first half, and caught the ire of Ford, who ripped off his suit jacket during a timeout to express his displeasure with Life's rebounding efforts.
"James needs to be more than just a shooter," Ford said. "I know he can shoot the basketball, and that's a great strength, but we need him to play defense and get in there and mix it up and rebound a little bit."
Ford was happy with Life's response after the reprimand, as he played a better all-around game the rest of the way. Life showed his value in a 30-second span late in the half, hitting an NBA three, then spotting up in transition and taking a feed from junior Maurice Maxwell to can another trey on the next trip.
UMass took a 48-22 lead into the break, punctuated by a steal and dunk by junior Art Bowers to end the half.
In the second half, the Minutemen picked up where they left off, as their full-court press was too much for Dowling to handle.
"I thought we played hard," Ford said. "We didn't execute as well as I'd like. Our hard work and our style of play really made us succeed. I thought we executed the way we want to play as far as 94-feet for 40 minutes."
UMass wore the smaller Dowling team down, as juniors Rashaun Freeman and Stephane Lasme each had their way in the post.
Freeman finished with 15 points and nine rebounds, and Lasme chipped in 11 points and nine boards.
NOTES: The point guard spot has not been solidified, as Maxwell, Bowers, and freshman Chris Lowe all saw time at the position. Maxwell is still getting acclimated to the position, but looked the most comfortable dishing out seven assists, while only turning the ball over three times.
"I know I still have a lot to learn," Maxwell said. "Once I learn the offense a lot more I'll know how to get my teammates better shots and I'll know when to get myself involved offensively."
Ford described Lowe's performance as "up-and-down, like a typical freshman." Lowe had five turnovers to go with six assists.
