AVIDSON, N.C. - The Travis Ford show hits the road tonight as the University of Massachusetts men's basketball travels to North Carolina to take on Davidson at 7 p.m. in Belk Arena.
The Minuteman coach said he is looking forward to seeing how his team reacts on the road.
''I like the challenge of playing on the road and trying to win in another team's building,'' Ford said. ''On the road the players can concentrate only on basketball and be together as a team. We do a lot of preparation on the road, a lot of film work.''
Ford believes the Minutemen would be able to run against the Wildcats, unlike in the season-opening 67-62 win over Hartford Friday, when UMass had to grind out a victory.
''We didn't get out and play the way we like to play against Hartford,'' Ford said. ''You practice for eight or nine weeks playing one way, then a team doesn't let you play that way and you have to adjust. I thought we did a good job adjusting.
''I think Davidson will try to continue to push the ball up and down. I just hope we can guard them defensively,'' Ford added. ''They're very, very good. This team knows how to win together. They won the Southern Conference, which is a very good league. This is an experienced basketball team that plays a lot of seniors and really knows how to win together.''
The Wildcats didn't look very, very good Saturday, but few people do against No. 1 Duke. Davidson fell to the higher-profile North Carolinians, 84-55, in their season opener.
The Wildcats have three starters back from a team that went 23-9 a year ago, including a perfect 16-0 regular season championship in the Southern Conference. They were upset by UNC-Greensboro in the league tournament and had to settle for a trip to the NIT where they advanced to the third round.
Senior guard Brendan Winters, who had 17 against the Blue Devils, is Davidson's top returning scorer. He averaged 16.7 points per game last year and is the Southern Conference's preseason player of the year. Fellow senior Ian Johnson had 19 points vs. Duke and averaged 11.1 a year ago.
''Brendan Winters is a very dangerous basketball player. He's capable of getting 25 points on any given night,'' Ford said. ''Johnson is a little unheralded, but by the end of the season could be one of the best players in the conference.''
Johnson won't sneak up on the Minutemen. He had 17 points and eight rebounds against UMass last year when the Minutemen dealt Davidson one of their nine defeats, 70-67, despite playing without suspended guard Anthony Anderson.
UMass leads the all-time series between the two teams 3-2.
Ford, who has said he'll change his starting lineup often over the course of the season, said he was considering altering it already.
''I haven't decided yet. I liked what Jeff Viggiano and Chris Lowe showed coming off the bench,'' Ford said. ''Chris Lowe and Vig are going to get good minutes and may eventually start at some point. Guys on this team are going to have to earn their minutes. I like having a guy coming off the bench that when you look at numbers and minutes, you'd think that guy was a starter.''

n an attempt to build up a wave of momentum, the Massachusetts men's basketball team (1-0) will look to leave the south with a win as it takes on Davidson College (0-1) in Davidson, N.C. This marks the first road game for the Minutemen, as they beat Hartford 67-62 on Friday night in their season-opener at the Mullins Center.
Davidson is coming off its first game of the season as well, an 84-55 loss at No. 1 Duke on Saturday.
Coach Bob McKillop and the Wildcats are a team that has proven to be a postseason tournament contender, making it to the NIT and NCAA tourney twice. Davidson entered this season after advancing to the third round of the NIT last season.
The story for the 2005-06 season is that one of the team's deadliest shooters, who is third on Davidson's all-time three-point list, also happens to be the coach's son. Matt McKillop is the senior leader on the team, and the Minutemen will look to stop him on the perimeter.
With UMass coach Travis Ford viewing his team's defense as its strength, he will look to shut down the Wildcats on that end.
"Right now we've got to hang our hat on defense. Offense can come and go at anytime, especially with our team," Ford said. "Defense is something we can play every night and, luckily, it has been what we've been good at."
UMass is coming off of the win against Hartford, in which defense played a major role for the Minutemen. Junior Stephane Lasme is one player that Ford seeks to utilize as a defender, as he was effective on Friday.
"[Lasme] plays defense and he plays hard. He's got to start scoring around the bucket a little better, but we need him on the court as much as possible," Ford said.
On the offensive end, junior Rashaun Freeman is the one who gets it done for UMass. The team's leading scorer during the 2004-05 season put up 25 points in the Hartford win and continues to be one of the top threats in the Atlantic 10.
Freshman Chris Lowe stepped it up in his first college game on Friday, playing 25 minutes and scoring eight points. Senior Jeff Viggiano is a player that Ford sees as the main leader of the team, and since his performance on Friday certainly displayed that, he will look to take his team back to Amherst with a 2-0 record.
One aspect the Minutemen will have to fix is its play early in games. Against Hartford, UMass stepped onto the court at the Mullins Center with shades of anxiety and tenseness, before loosening up and taking the win.
The Minutemen cannot be tense if they want to shut down the likes of Southern Conference Player of the Year Brendan Winters, who has the type of versatility to hurt a team offensively and defensively.
The 6-foot-5, 205 pound senior from Denver, Colo. has shooting ability, averaging 16.7 points per game, as well as a knack for the ball on defense, with 76 career steals. Winters was able to score 17 points against the Blue Devils, despite going against the top team in the nation.
AVIDSON, N.C. - In a game that saw 24 lead changes throughout, it was a lay-up by Davidson's Thomas Sander with 33 seconds to play that proved the most crucial as it gave the Wildcats the final change of the night. The Wildcats erased a 10 point UMass lead in the final eight minutes of action to take a 66-63 win at the John M. Belk Arena on Tuesday night in front of 3,084 fans.

After trading baskets for much of the game, UMass put together a 12-0 run taking a 60-50 lead with 7:31 remaining.
The Wildcats responded, however, trimming that margin over the next seven minutes until Sander's conversion. Brendan Winters, the SoCon Preseason Player of the Year, hit two free throws with four seconds remaining to seal the win. Winters was held to just nine points on the night by tenacious defense by UMass junior Brandon Thomas (San Antonio, Texas).
Winters scored 34 at Duke in Davidson's season-opener and had scored double-figures in 27 consecutive games.
With four seconds to play, UMass inbound the ball with no timeouts, but junior Art Bowers' (Wilmington, Del.) three-point attempt was blocked out of bounds as time expired.
Junior Stephane Lasme (Libreville, Gabon) nearly had a triple double as he was one blocked shot away. He posted a career-high and school-record tying nine blocks to go with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Maurice Maxwell (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the Minutemen with 13 points including a three-pointer (one of three on the night) that helped spark the 12-0 run.
Ian Johnson led all scorers with 20 points on the night and hauled in nine boards. Matt McKillop, son of Davidson head coach Bob McKillop, played a crucial roll in the comeback scoring eight of his 11 points in the final 5:17 of play.
The two squads played a tight first half with both trading baskets. Fouls were an issue for the Minutemen as the Wildcats were in the double bonus with over five minutes to go. Davidson was 12-for-15 in the half from the charity stripe. Ian Johnson led all scorers in the opening half with 16 points including 12 of the Wildcats final 16 points of the half.
UMass will return to action this Friday when the Minutemen take on UAB in the Hall of Fame Tip-off Classic at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass. Tip-off for the game is slated for 1:00 p.m. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Network.
AVIDSON, N.C. -- Two games into the Travis Ford era at UMass, the Minutemen already are learning the difference between great plays and big plays.
And last night, the difference was costly.
UMass center Stephane Lasme turned in one of the best all-around performances in school history, and the Minutemen held a late 10-point lead. However, both highlights were effectively rendered insignificant as UMass watched Davidson make all the critical plays in the final minutes of a 66-63 loss at Belk Arena.
Lasme nearly had UMass's second-ever triple-double, posting 10 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 blocks, tying the blocked-shot record held by Marcus Camby (twice in 1996) and Harper Williams (1991).
Lasme's strong play in the second half -- 8 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 blocks -- was a major reason the Minutemen (1-1) bolted to a 60-50 lead with 7 minutes 30 seconds remaining after trailing by a point at halftime.
Then Davidson, which had lost to No. 1 Duke by 29 points four days ago, charged hard. The Wildcats' aggressive defense forced UMass to commit six of its 18 turnovers during a four-minute stretch, as Davidson (1-1) closed the game with a 16-3 run.
''I don't know if we eased up, but I think we played not to lose," an exasperated Ford said. ''We didn't have anybody step up and make the big play. I didn't even see anybody wanting to make the big play.
''Davidson kept fighting. They kept bleeding into the lead. They made big plays, and we didn't have anybody do that."
After putting up a scintillating 25 points in the Minutemen's season-opening victory over Hartford last week, preseason all-Atlantic-10 pick Rashaun Freeman was limited to 7 points on 3-of-6 shooting. He also had a game-high five turnovers.
Despite the turnovers, the squandered double-digit lead, and the meager contribution from its leading scorer, UMass still had opportunities to keep its record under Ford unblemished.
Davidson simply didn't allow it.

Reserve forward Thomas Sander stepped forth for Davidson, hitting a layup, over Lasme, to give the Wildcats a 64-63 lead with 33 seconds remaining.
After Ford called a timeout, Maurice Maxwell dribbled around the perimeter for several seconds before badly missing a 3-pointer.
''That wasn't the shot we wanted," Ford said.
Although Winters made a pair of free throws to give Davidson a 66-63 lead with 4.7 seconds left, the Minutemen put a scare into the crowd of 3,084, as Maxwell took the inbounds pass and hurried down the court.
However, emblematic of the evening, he lost the ball, which somehow wound up in the hands of UMass's Art Bowers. Winters blocked Bowers's desperation 3-pointer as time ran out.
''I didn't see a lot of leadership out there," Ford said. ''We needed someone to step up for us, and we didn't get it. I thought Stephane played a great defensive game, but overall we have to improve."
The Minutemen didn't play horribly all night, however. They appeared downright unstoppable at times in the second half -- at least for 3:48, as Maxwell scored 5 points and Freeman added 4 during an 11-0 run that resulted in the ill-fated 10-point lead.
And defensively, Lasme, who moved past Will Herndon for sixth place on UMass's career blocks list, forced his will. After Davidson big man Ian Johnson scored 16 points in the first half, Lasme limited Johnson to 4 points in the final 20 minutes.
''I was more worried about winning the game," said Lasme, who was looking to post the first UMass triple-double since current Boston College coach Al Skinner did it in 1973.
''The stat sheet and everything else doesn't matter. I just wanted to win this game. Nothing really matters unless we win."
AVIDSON - Davidson's 66-63 win against Massachusetts came after the Wildcats scored what seemed like an unlikely basket Tuesday.
![]() The Wildcats celebrate after completing the second-half comeback. |
Stephan Lasme lurked behind him.
Lasme, a 6-foot-8 junior, had tied the UMass record with nine blocks in the game, and had altered several other Davidson shots. He just missed becoming the first Minuteman player to have a triple-double in 32 years, finishing with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Facing those kinds of numbers -- and Lasme's lengthy wingspan -- Sander could have kicked the ball back out. But he remembered what coach Bob McKillop told him before the game.
Always give a pump fake.
"I don't really jump that high," said Sander, also 6-8. "So I knew I had to give him a couple fakes to freeze him."
So, Sander gave a juke to lure Lasme, then went up strong for the go-ahead layup with 32 seconds left.
Sander's layup gave Davidson the lead, after it looked as if the Wildcats might suffer their second straight loss. Lasme had spent most of the game swatting shots, deflecting nine just like Duke's Shelden Williams did against Davidson on Saturday.
"Lasme made an impact that few players can make," McKillop said. "It wasn't like he was just standing under the basket waiting for us. He had to rush out and make the play."
Lasme's play helped UMass (1-1) seize a 60-50 lead with seven minutes left. But that's when Davidson showed some defense, too.
The Wildcats held the Minutemen to one field goal the rest of the way and ended the game on a 16-3 run.
After Sander's basket gave Davidson the lead, Maurice Maxwell missed a 3-pointer from the left wing with eight seconds left. Sander snagged the loose ball, and Brendan Winters sank two free throws with 4.7 seconds left to make it 66-63.
UMass had one last chance, but Winters blocked Art Bowers' 3-point attempt at the buzzer.
AVIDSON, N.C. - The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team blew a 10-point second-half lead and lost a 66-63 heartbreaker to Davidson at Belk Arena Tuesday.

'I thought we played not to lose, not to win,' UMass coach Travis Ford said after the game. 'We didn't have anybody step up to make the big play. Davidson made all the big plays down the stretch. Not only did we not make big plays, I didn't see anybody step up wanting to make them. I was disappointed that we put ourselves in position to win the basketball game and we didn't finish it. You have to give Davidson all the credit. They kept playing and made big shots.'
Wildcat coach Bob McKillop said, 'This team has won a lot of games and they know how to win games. You can't put a value on what that means to bring that to the table. When you're accustomed to winning, magical things can happen.'
The Minutemen return to action Friday, when they face the University of Alabama at Birmingham at 1 p.m. in the Tip-Off Classic at the MassMutual Center in Springfield.
Davidson (1-1) stays in the Atlantic 10 portion of its schedule with games against Saint Joseph's (Saturday) and Charlotte (Nov. 30).
After Davidson scored nine straight to cut UMass' lead to 60-59 with 2:23 left, Maurice Maxwell hit a 3-pointer to give the Minutemen some breathing room at 63-59 with 1:20 left. But Matt McKillop (the coach's son) answered with a 3-pointer at the other end to make it 63-62.
After a Wildcat time-out, Maxwell missed 10-footer and Davidson hurried the ball up the floor. Thomas Sander got the ball on the block alone against Stephane Lasme. Not intimidated by Lasme's nine blocks to that point, Sander pump faked and Lasme bit. He leaped, giving Sander an easy layup to put the Wildcats ahead 64-63 with 33.8 seconds left.
'I was worried about not fouling,' Lasme said. 'He made a good play. He's a smart player.'
Coming out of a time-out, UMass chose to hold the ball until deep in the shot clock, but Maxwell's 3-point try was off line and the rebound pinballed around until Sander dove on the ball and called time-out with 5.8 seconds left.
UMass fouled Brendan Winters immediately and he made both free throws to make it 63-66 with 4.7 seconds left. Maxwell got the ball to Bowers in the corner, but Winters blocked the shot as time ran out.
'It's very frustrating,' senior Jeff Viggiano said. 'We were up 10, but they just battled and we didn't execute toward the end and they came back.'
The loss wasted a great effort by Lasme, who nearly had a triple double with 10 points and 11 rebounds to go along with his nine blocks.
'He made an impact on this game as few players can make,' Bob McKillop said. 'His nine blocks erased six, maybe seven, baskets. He came six, maybe seven, steps to help in each case. He had to react and move quickly. He had a superb game.'
Maxwell led UMass with 13 points, while Brandon Thomas added 12. Junior big man Rashaun Freeman struggled offensively with just seven points to go with his eight rebounds.
'I didn't think we got much production out of anybody,' Ford said.
Ian Johnson had 20 points and nine rebounds, while McKillop had 11 (eight in the second half) for Davidson.
The teams were even throughout the first half as they exchanged the lead 16 times. Neither team led by more than two points. UMass struggled to contain Johnson, who had 16 of his 20 points before intermission.
'It was a team effort to get the lead and it was a team effort that let it slip off,' Ford said.

AVIDSON, N.C. - Had the University of Massachusetts won Tuesday's game against Davidson, Stephane Lasme's entrance into the school's record book would have been the story of the night. But the loss rendered Lasme's nine blocked shots and near triple-double into a footnote.
![]() Stephane Lasme records one of his record-tying 9 blocks. |
'I wasn't really thinking about how many I was getting. I was just trying to help my teammates out,' Lasme said. 'I was more worried about winning the game. That stat sheet doesn't really matter.'
UMass coach Travis Ford wasn't surprised. 'He's a very good shot-blocker. That's not unusual for him,' Ford said. 'If he stays out of foul trouble, he usually gets five or six per game. It just depends on how many minutes he gets to play.'
Lasme's nine gave him 136 in his career, pushing him past Will Herndon (128) into No. 6 on the all-time UMass list. Lasme has 13 in two games so far this season.
It was the second straight game the Wildcats had nine shots blocked. Duke's Sheldon Williams turned back nine of their attempts on Saturday.
FOULED OUT - Freshman point guard Chris Lowe played well again with five points and six assists, but he fouled out with two minutes, 23 seconds left and UMass missed him at crunch time.
'He's the one guy that can get in the lane and create for other guys. He gets guys shots,' Ford said. 'We need Chris Lowe on the court.'
STREAK SNAPPED - UMass did a solid job on Southern Conference preseason player of the year Brendan Winters who had nine points. That snapped a 27-game streak of double-figure scoring games.
UMass big man Rashaun Freeman's seven points snapped his 11-game streak of at least 10, dating back to Jan. 29 when the Minutemen lost to Richmond 67-63.
NEXT UP - The Minutemen take on the University of Alabama at Birmingham at 1 p.m. Friday in the Tip-Off Classic at the MassMutual Center. The game will be the season opener for the Blazers, who finished 22-11 last year and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
MISCELLANEOUS - Miles of bumper-to-bumper traffic on I-77 from Charlotte to Davidson caused the Minuteman bus to arrive just 15 minutes before tip-off.
The referees strictly enforced two directives. There were several palming calls and James Life was made to take off the T-shirt he was wearing under his uniform top because the rest of the Minutemen weren't wearing the same shirt.
