he 'Fastest 40 Minutes of Basketball' sounds a lot nicer than '40 Minutes of Hell,' but don't be fooled. It's pretty much the same thing.
University of Alabama at Birmingham coach Mike Anderson was an assistant coach at Arkansas when Nolan Richardson's team played their vaunted '40 Minutes of Hell' and the Blazers' running, pressing and attacking style is a near replica of that with a fresh name.
'It's very similar. We don't have the size that we had' with Arkansas, Anderson said. 'Philosophy-wise, it's pretty much the same.'
Anderson will bring the 'Fastest 40' to Springfield at 1 p.m. Friday when UAB takes on the University of Massachusetts in the Tip-Off Classic at the MassMutual Center.
UMass coach Travis Ford said UAB's fast break is more aggressive than the one Davidson used Tuesday.
'We know UAB is going to be very, very aggressive. They play defense to create offense,' Ford said. 'It's important to handle (their pressure) early, for two reasons - obviously not to get blown out early and to gain some confidence. We're going to have to really work on handling pressure before Friday.'
While some teams have tried to decrease the tempo against UAB, Ford said that isn't part of the plan.
'I think we're at our best when we do run the ball. We need to get out and create opportunities. We're going to get out and fast break with them,' he said. 'We don't have any intention of trying to slow the ball down.'
Anderson hasn't coached against a Ford team before, but he has faced UMass.
Anderson was on Richardson's bench when the then No. 1-ranked Razorbacks faced the No. 3 Minutemen in the 2004 Tip-Off. Eleven years ago Friday, UMass stunned the defending champs 104-80. The win pushed the Minutemen to No. 1 in both polls for the first time in school history.
'That was an eye-opener for us. Coming of a national championship, sometimes the guys are still in that light. UMass was the first game we had and John (Calipari) did a good job having his team ready,' Anderson said. 'I have some not-so-fond memories of that particular game.'
Neither team is ranked this time. The Minutemen will try to shake off a 66-63 loss at Davidson Tuesday, while the Blazers will be opening their season.
'Unquestionably they have an advantage because they're already in game rhythm,' Anderson said. 'With our guys, I don't know how they're going to come out.'
If they come out like they did last year, the Blazers should be in good shape. UAB went 22-11 a year ago to finish fourth in Conference USA. The Blazers defeated Louisiana State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, before falling to Arizona 85-63 in the second round.
Several key players return from that team including 6-foot-7 senior forward Demario Eddins, who averaged 12.5 points and 4.8 rebounds last season.
'This being his senior year, it's his time to show all the things he can do,' Anderson said. 'I think he can do a lot of things, it's just a matter of him being consistent with it. But in big games, he's played extremely well.'
Senior point guard Squeaky Johnson doesn't score much but he's a reliable passer (4.6 assists per game) and defender. His backcourt partner, Marvett McDonald, averaged 10.8 points last year.
Anderson said he's impressed with the Minutemen.
Rashaun 'Freeman is a big-time player. He was an all-conference player in a pretty good league,' Anderson said. 'Travis has these guys feeding off one another. They have some good guys who understand their roles. They're playing a lot of people and they're playing well.'
If he's going to change his starting lineup, Ford likely won't announce it until game time Friday. However, freshman point guard Chris Lowe could make his first career start in the game. In the first two games, the Minutemen have played better offensively and defensively with the rookie from Mount Vernon, N.Y., in the lineup.

PRINGFIELD, Mass. - Demario Eddings scored a career-high 28 points to lead UAB (1-0) past Massachusetts (1-2), 86-77, Friday afternoon in the 27th annual Tip-Off Classic at the MassMutual Center. The Minutemen, who trailed by as many as 14 points late in the first half, got within two points three times in the second half but the Blazers never gave up the lead. Rashaun Freeman led the Minutemen with 21 points and 11 rebounds for his 20th career double-double. Brandon Thomas had a season-high 22 points as well as four assists. Stephane Lasme had 14 points, eight rebounds and seven blocks. He has now recorded 16 blocks in the last two games.
Both teams exchanged baskets for the first five minutes as they ran the ball up and down the floor. UMass held an 11-9 lead when the Blazers ran off six straight points in 58 seconds to take a four-point lead, 15-11, with 14:26 left in the first half. Junior Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.) hit a lay-up with 13:35 left to break a UMass scoring drought and bring the Minutemen back within a basket. Following a free throw by the Blazers, Freeman earned an old-fashioned three-point play for the second straight possession. He missed the free throw, but brought UMass within a point.
With UMass trailing by three points a few seconds later, junior Brandon Thomas (San Antonio, Texas) drained a three-pointer just as the shot clock was expiring to tie the game at 18 with 11:05 left. Thomas then made a steal at halfcourt and drove the length of the floor for a crowd-electrifying dunk with 10:02 left that forced UAB to call a timeout. The five straight points by Thomas gave the Minutemen a 20-18 lead. The Blazers came right back, however, and used a 13-2 run in the next 2:53 to take a 31-22 lead with 6:32 left. After UMass converted four straight free throws to get within five points. the Blazers scored seven of the next nine points to take a 10-point lead.
Every time the Minutemen tried to make a run, UAB had an answer and led 40-30 with 3:21 left in the first half. UAB extended its lead to a game-high 14 points, 44-30, before UMass got consecutive baskets by Freeman and sophomore Lawrence Carrier (San Bernardino, Calif.). Richard Jones had a basket for the Blazers right before intermission to give them a 46-34 lead at the break. The Blazers shot a blistering 58 percent in the first half while the Minutemen shot 47 percent. UMass was just 5-for-11 (.46 percent) from the free throw line. The Blazers were also 5-for-11 (46 percent) from three-point range while UMass was 1-for-6 (17 percent). UAB held a 22-14 edge in rebounding and a 12-4 advantage in bench scoring. Both teams had 12 turnovers. There were five ties and 10 lead changes in the first 11 and a half minutes of action before UAB took the lead for good with 8:40 left in the first half on a three-pointer by Marvett McDonald.
The Blazers scored the first basket of the second half, but UMass then went on a 12-2 run in the next 2:42 to cut its deficit to four points at 50-46. A Thomas three-pointer with 16:39 left forced UAB to call a timeout. The Minutemen kept up the run following the timeout. A jumper by junior Maurice Maxwell (Philadelphia, Pa.) got the Minutemen within two points, but he then committed an intentional foul a few seconds later. The Blazers took advantage and earned four points out of the possession to get their lead back up to six points at 54-48. They got another basket to go up eight, but back-to-back Thomas three-pointer's got UMass back within two points at 56-54.
The Blazers slowly started to build their lead back up as UMass went cold from the field. UAB outscored the Minutemen, 18-6 following Thomas' consecutive trifectas, to take a 74-60 lead with 9:55 to play. The Minutemen hung tough and made one last gasp in the final eight minutes. A dunk by junior Stephane Lasme (Livreville, Gabon) sparked a 7-0 UMass run in the next 2:11 that made it a seven-point game. McDonald hit a three-pointer for the Blazers from the corner that stopped the run.
The Blazers led 77-69 at the final media timeout with 3:13 left in regulation. A pair of free throws by Thomas with just over three minutes left got the Minutemen within six points at 77-71. The teams then exchanged baskets, but the Blazers put the game away when McDonald hit a lay-up as the shot clock was expiring. UMass called timeout and trailed 81-73 with just 1:33 left. The Blazers made their free throws down the stretch and hung on for the first win in the series between these two teams.
UAB shot 50 percent from the field for the game, while the Minutemen were 47 percent. The Blazers were 7-for-17 (41 percent) from behind the arc, while the Minutemen were 4-for-16 (25 percent). UMass out-rebounded the Blazers, 39-36, but committed 23 turnovers. UAB had 16 turnovers, including just four in the second half. The Minutemen had 11 in the second half. McDonald (13), Wen Mukubu (13) and Carldell Johnson (10) all reached double-figures for the Blazers in addition to Eddings.
The Minutemen will return to the Mullins Center to host Savannah State Monday night at 7:00 p.m. To purchase tickets, call 1-866-UMASS-TIX, stop by the Mullins Center Box Office or go online to www.umassathletics.com.
Mass is now 38-23 all-time at the MassMutual (formerly Springfield Civic) Center and are 1-1 all-time in the Basketball Hall Of Fame Tip-off Classic.
• This was just the third loss for UMass over the last 15 years when playing in Springfield (13-3).
• This was the first meeting between the two programs.
• UMass won its only other appearance in the Hall of Fame Tip-off Classic. The Minutemen defeated Arkansas, 104-80, on Nov. 25, 1994 gaining UMass its first ever No. 1 national ranking.
• Junior Brandon Thomas scored a season-high 22 points. His back-to-back three pointers in the second half pulled UMass to within two, 56-54. For the third consecutive game, Thomas scored the opening basket for UMass.
• Junior Rashuan Freeman got off to an early start scoring eight of his 21 points in the first 7:24 of action. He finished the first half with 14 points which was his best first half performance since scoring 18 points against Fordham last season in the opening frame. In the win over Hartford to open this season, Freeman posted 17 points in the second half.
• Freeman posted 20th career double-double and 48th double-figure scoring effort. He finished the day with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
• Junior Stephane Lasme blocked seven shots against the Blazers giving him 20 for the season and 143 for his career. He had three blocks in the first three minutes of the second half helping UMass rally from a 46-34 halftime deficit. He has blocked 16 shots over the last two games.
• Lasme finished the game with 14 points, eight rebounds and seven points.
• UAB used a 13-to-2 run over a three minute stretch late in the first half to take a 31-22 lead - the largest of the period for either team - at the 6:17 mark. Senior Jeff Viggiano and freshman Chris Lowe each hit a pair of free throws to pull UMass back within five.
• UMass started the second half on a 14-to-4 run to trim UAB's lead to just two, 50-48.
• Junior Maurice Maxwell was called for an intentional foul on Wen Mukubu at the 15:25 mark of the second half. Mukubu converted both free throws and UAB's Demario Eddins converted two free throws on the ensuing possession to push the lead back to 54-48.
• After giving up a 18-to-6 UAB run following Thomas' consecutive trey's, the Minutemen were able to pull within six 79-76 with just under three minutes in regulation.
• UMass will next host Savannah State on Monday, Nov. 25 in the Mullins Center. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
PRINGFIELD - If playing up-tempo basketball was a martial art, the University of Massachusetts men's team ran into a black belt Friday.
The Minutemen tried to run with the University of Alabama at Birmingham, a school that trademarked the slogan "Fastest 40 Minutes in Basketball," but fell 86-77 in the Tip-Off Classic at the MassMutual Center.

Despite the result, UMass coach Travis Ford seemed more encouraged than he did after Tuesday's 66-63 loss at Davidson.
"We played a good team that played good," Ford said. "There's a lot of things that we can grow off of in these two games. There are a lot of things we realize we are doing well, a lot of things we realize that we need to improve on."
UAB (1-0) looked like it might blow UMass (1-2) out early. A late first-half run gave the Blazers a 44-30 advantage with two minutes, 32 seconds left, but the Minutemen narrowed the gap to 46-34 at intermission.
Lawrence Kinnard scored the first basket of the second half, but UMass scored 14 of the game's next 16 points to draw within two at 50-48 just under four minutes into the half.
The Minutemen couldn't pull even and the Blazers couldn't pull away as the game stayed close until Demario Eddins started a 12-0 UAB run that made it 72-58 with 9:46 left.
UMass didn't get closer than six the rest of the way.
"I thought we played hard," Ford said. "I thought we really played in spurts. Every time we would make a run, we would make a few turnovers that really negated those runs. We never pushed them to the point where we were making them play bad. We came up against a very good basketball team that played better than us tonight."
Eddins had a career-high 28 points to go with six rebounds, while UAB senior point guard Squeaky Johnson had 10 points and 10 assists.
Thomas had his best game as a Minuteman with 22 points and made 4-of-6 3-point attempts.
"I thought Brandon Thomas really stepped up for them," UAB coach Mike Anderson said. "He really attacked us. Id like to have him on my team."
Rashaun Freeman bounced back from his offensive struggles against Davidson with 21 points and 11 rebounds, but his minutes were limited by foul trouble. Stephane Lasme added 14 points, eight rebounds and seven blocks.
UMass hosts Savannah State at the Mullins Center at 7 p.m. Monday. UAB plays South Carolina State in its home opener Sunday.
Minuteman freshman point guard Chris Lowe, who had been a bright spot in the first two games, struggled against the Blazers' pressure and trapping. He had six turnovers including five in the first half. He was better in the second half with five points and one turnover.
Anderson left impressed by both teams.
"I thought it was a well-played game. I thought both teams got after it," Anderson said. "We had a chance to really put them away and we didn't. That's a tribute to coach Ford and the players that they have. We have a veteran ball club and I thought that was the difference. Needless to say, I'm very happy with the win."

PRINGFIELD -- Three games into a new coaching era, after a game in Springfield against a quality opponent, the University of Massachusetts Minutemen were flying high.
The year was 2001. When the Minutemen dispatched 23d-ranked Oregon at the Civic Center, they were 3-0, and Steve Lappas was being saluted for bringing back the good old days.
It just goes to show that three games is way too early to draw definitive conclusions.
That's good news for new coach Travis Ford, whose Minutemen fell to 1-2 yesterday, dropping a hard-fought, 86-77 decision to Alabama-Birmingham in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic. It was an entertaining afternoon of basketball played before 6,105 fans at the recently refurbished and rechristened MassMutual Center.
UMass mixed some heartening signs with some dispiriting ones in a proportion that was just not enough against a veteran Blazer squad that has won games in the NCAA Tournament in each of the last two years.
''I thought we played hard, [but] I thought we played in spurts," said Ford. ''Every time we would make a run, we would make a few turnovers that negated those runs . . . We came up against a very good basketball team that played better than us."
UAB led virtually wire to wire, and went to the locker room at halftime with a 46-34 advantage. Three times in the second half, the Minutemen cut the margin to 2 points, but they could never get over the top. The game turned for good on a sequence with a little more than five minutes remaining and UMass trailing by 7, when two Lawrence Carrier 3-point bids missed at one end, before Marvett McDonald nailed a trey from the left corner at the other.
The 1-0 Blazers got a career-high 28 points from senior Demario Eddins, a lithe, 6-foot-7-inch forward with quickness in the post and good perimeter range. Point guard Squeaky Johnson had 10 points and 10 assists.
UMass was led by junior Brandon Thomas with 22 points. A transfer from Long Island University, Thomas gives the Minutemen versatile skills they have rarely seen in a 6-6 player. His ballhandling ability allows him to be a one-man press-breaker. He has a deft touch from behind the 3-point arc (4 for 6 yesterday, while the rest of the team shot 0 for 10). And he has finishing power, as illustrated by a contested tomahawk jam in transition that provided the game's signature play.
''You never go into a game looking to score," said Thomas. ''You just want to play hard for 40 minutes."
The Minutemen also got strong frontcourt games from Rashaun Freeman (21 points, 11 rebounds) and Stephane Lasme (14 points, 8 rebounds, 7 blocked shots).
Those efforts, though, were not enough, because UMass got little else. The Minutemen struggled against UAB's press, turning the ball over 23 times, leading to 35 Blazer points.
Ford acknowledges his team has a depth problem. The Minutemen are down to eight scholarship players, after junior Art Bowers decided to transfer. Bowers had started each of the first two games, but had yet to score. Ford said the parting was amicable, and based on Bowers's desire for more playing time.
That leaves the Minutemen with little room for error in terms of injuries, foul trouble, or spotty performances.
''We've got to get the most out of every player," said Ford. ''We're not a team that has a lot of firepower."
In truth, as 1-2 records go, UMass's is not bad. The Minutemen lost a 3-point decision at Davidson, a veteran team that won 23 games a year ago. And yesterday they went up against one of the most underrated teams in the country, a squad that beat Kentucky and Washington in the NCAA Tournament two years ago, and Louisiana State last year. Still, that hasn't added up to much national respect, something Johnson says is quite the motivator.
''It bothers us personally," he said. ''We tend to keep it inside the locker room. This year we're coming out with a chip on our shoulder."
PRINGFIELD - Travis Ford is trying to install a successful, pressure-oriented style at UMass. If the first-year coach needed to show his team a blueprint, he only had to look at yesterday’s opponent.
UAB, coming off a 22-11 season and an NCAA tournament appearance, survived a pair of UMass runs in the second half and held on to beat the Minutemen, 86-77, in the 27th annual Tip Off Classic at the MassMutual Center.
UAB (1-0) enjoyed a 35-17 advantage in points off turnovers and a 20-8 edge in fast-break points, two categories very high on Ford’s agenda.
“We’ve definitely got to get out on the fast break, that’s the way we like to play and we weren’t outletting the ball enough,” Ford said.
“We’re not creating enough turnovers because we’re not getting the press. But we’ve got to watch it because we don’t have a lot of fouls to give. We’re down to eight scholarship players. Although we want to be aggressive, we’ve got to be smart.”
Junior forward Demario Eddins led UAB with 28 points followed by Marvett McDonald (13), Wen Mukubu (13) and point guard Carldell Johnson, who had 10 points, 10 assists and only one turnover. Guard Brandon Thomas paced UMass with 22 points, while forwards Rashaun Freeman (21) and Stephane Lasme (14) also hit double-digits.
UMass (1-2) was down 48-34 in the opening minute of the second half when it exploded on a 14-2 run fueled by Freeman on the inside and Thomas and Maurice Maxwell on the perimeter. UMass cut the Blazers’ lead to 50-48 on a Maxwell jumper with 16:07 to play. The Blazers busted the run with four free throws and a Mukubu jumper.
Eddins then inspired a 12-0 run that put UMass down 72-58 with 9:45 remaining. Lawrence Carrier came off the bench to spark a UMass comeback to cut the Blazers’ lead to 77-71 with 3:13 to play. The spurt fizzled out and the Blazers held on.
“We didn’t play bad, we just ran up against a very good basketball squad that played better than us,” Ford said.
UMass junior guard Artie Bowers has left the team and plans to transfer.
PRINGFIELD, Mass. - In a fast-paced game against a run-and-gun University of Alabama at Birmingham squad, the Massachusetts men's basketball team ultimately ran out of gas, falling 86-77 in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic on Friday afternoon at the MassMutual Center in Springfield.
The loss was the second of the week for the Minutemen, as they were edged 66-63 by Davidson on Tuesday on the road. UMass (1-2) will look to get back on the winning track tonight as they host Savannah State (1-3), a team that went 0-28 last season, tonight at 7 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
Against UAB, the Minutemen played with only eight scholarship players on their roster, as junior guard Art Bowers left the team on Wednesday. Bowers plans to transfer to a school where he will receive more playing time than he saw early this season.
A shorthanded team paired with the relentless full-court pressure applied by UAB (1-0) could have been a disastrous combination for UMass, but the Minutemen hung tough. UMass closed to within two points three times in the second half, but was unable to get over the hump and take the lead.
Every time the Maroon and White drew close, the Blazers turned up their trademark defensive intensity and maintained the lead. Unlike UMass, UAB features a deep bench, as 11 players saw action in the game.
UMass coach Travis Ford knows with only eight scholarship players there is little room for error.
"We've got to get the most out of every player," Ford said. "We're not a team that's going to go out and have a lot of firepower. We have some good basketball players that have to play to their strengths. We have to get everyone doing that on a consistent basis in order for us to be our best."
UAB on the other hand, had plenty of firepower, as four players scored in double figures, led by Demario Eddins' career-high 28 points. Eddins, a 6-foot-7 forward who played for two years at Winchendon Prep in Winchendon, Mass., came through every time UAB needed a hoop, and also played tough defense on Rashaun Freeman down the stretch.
Freeman scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, but scored only seven points after the break, as Eddins and the Blazers made it difficult for the Minutemen to get the ball inside to their top scoring option.
Brandon Thomas turned in his strongest performance of the young season, stepping up with a team-high 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-6 from three-point land. Stephane Lasme was the only other player in double figures for the Maroon and White with 14 points. Lasme also added eight rebounds and seven blocks, giving him 20 blocks in just three games, a 6.7 per game average.
UAB coach Mike Anderson was impressed with UMass' top guns, and was happy to escape with a win.
"I thought Brandon really stepped up for them," Anderson said. "He played extremely well and he was the reason they really got back in it. I'd like to have him on my team. And Freeman's a beast.
"Lasme just controlled the paint. We were attacking, but our attacking was like a turnover when we went in there. He just changed the whole complexion of the game. But we were able to make adjustments, and we hung in there and pulled out the win."
While UAB is more well-known for its high-flying attack, it was UMass' Thomas who turned in the most athletic play of the day.
Midway through the first half, Thomas stole the ball from UAB's Paul Delaney at half court, and took off on a breakaway. Delaney recovered and cut Thomas off at the block, but Thomas wasn't deterred, as he skied over Delaney and threw down a tomahawk jam, bringing the majority of the 6,105 in attendance to their feet.
Although the dunk, which gave the Minutemen a 20-18 lead, ignited the UMass fans, it was the Blazers who responded. UAB went on a 13-2 run following the play, and never relinquished the lead.
The Blazers continued to expand their lead and took a 46-34 advantage into the locker room. UMass came out energized early in the second half, sparked by a flurry of blocks by Lasme, going on a 14-4 run to pull within two points with 16:09 remaining.
UMass cut the lead to two again two minutes later, as Thomas connected on consecutive three-pointers, but once again the Minutemen were unable to even the score. With the margin again cut to two, at 60-58 with 12:20 left in the game, UAB went on a 14-2 run to take control.
UMass chipped away, but was unable to get within six points the rest of the way.
"I thought we played hard, and really played in spurts," Ford said. "Every time we would make a run we would make a few turnovers that really negated those runs. A lot of mental errors caused that."
The UAB pressure (35 points off of 23 UMass turnovers) caused problems for the Minutemen, and freshman point guard Chris Lowe in particular. Lowe turned in an uneven performance, committing five first half turnovers, but responded with a better second half, committing only one turnover. Lowe finished the game with seven points.
Lawrence Carrier, who will see more playing time in Bowers' absence, provided some life off the bench, recording seven points and five rebounds in nine minutes of action.
