MHERST - Longtime basketball fans will remember Horace Broadnax as the point guard at Georgetown with Patrick Ewing on the Hoyas' 1984 national championship team. Really intense fans know he won Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference coach-of-the-year honors with Bethune-Cookman College in 1999-2000.
To be remembered at Savannah State, Broadnax will have to perform a miracle.
His Tigers visit the Mullins Center at 7 tonight. Savannah State and the University of Massachusetts both have new coaches, but the similarities pretty much end there.
Last season, Savannah State's third in Division I, the Tigers went 0-28, becoming just the second team in 50 years to go winless. Broadnax, who had been a practicing attorney since 2002, returned to the bench to replace Ed Daniels, who went 2-79 in three seasons.
The Tigers are trying to improve while playing as an independent with well less than the full complement of scholarships allowed by the NCAA.
UMass coach Travis Ford said he faced a situation at Eastern Kentucky similar to Broadnax's task.
'It's extremely similar,' Ford said. 'It's a whole new team. I had to get my players in there, the right type kids in there. He's taken over a program that's struggled, but he's the right guy to get it going.'
Savannah State doesn't have to worry about going winless this season. The Tigers beat Wilberforce, an NAIA school, to open the season, but since then they have lost to Oregon, Pacific and Bethune-Cookman by an average of 42.3 points.
It won't get much easier as Georgia, Texas A&M, Georgetown, Colorado and Arkansas are all hosting Savannah State this season.
Junior college transfer Javon Randolph, a 5-foot-10 guard, has led the Tigers with 13.3 points per game. UMass will have a distinct size advantage as the Tigers don't have anybody over 6-foot-7.
The Minutemen are trying to end a two-game losing streak and despite Savannah State's troubles, Ford doesn't expect his team to coast.
'They're a very dangerous team. They have nothing to lose. They're a team that's in transition and a team that's not supposed to win. But they're also dangerous because they've been tested,' Ford said. 'They've played on the road a lot against Pacific, who is a very good team and Oregon, who is a very good team and at Bethune-Cookman. So they're not going to be shell-shocked coming in here.
'They play extremely hard. They're a totally different team than they were last year,' Ford continued. 'This team will win some basketball games before the year is over. There are no easy games for our basketball team. We don't have enough firepower to do that.'
Ford hopes to ignite junior college transfer guard James Life, who has struggled to get going so far as a Minuteman.
'James Life needs to get in the flow a little bit. In the UAB game he never got in a flow,' Ford said. 'Never got in a rhythm. He needs a little more playing time so he can get in there and play through it.'
The Minutemen lost the Tip-Off Classic Friday 86-77 to the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
UMass junior big man Stephane Lasme has been in the flow. He enters the game with 16 blocks in his last two games and his 6.7 blocks-per-game average leads the nation. But Ford is worried that Lasme's success is making his guards complacent on defense.
'I told our guys we have a false sense of security. Our guards think they're good defenders. They're getting beat, but they have a guy back there that's blocking everybody's shot,' Ford said. 'We need Stephane blocking shots on his man, not everybody else's man. Our guys are getting in a bad habit of guarding everyone halfway because they know Stephane is back there to block a lot of shots. We need our guards to step up and keep guys in front of them.'

UMass Cruises Past Savannah State 93-57
Minutemen post second largest margin of victory in history of Mullins Center
From UMass Athletics, 11/28/2005
MHERST, Mass. - UMass recorded its second largest margin of victory in the history of the Mullins Center with a 36-point win, 93-57, over Savannah State on Monday night. The total was just shy of the previous high of 39 set on Jan. 22, 2000 against Rhode Island. Six players reached double-figures in the scoring column - the best team effort for UMass since the 1991 season. The Minutemen will have 10-days off before traveling to No. 3 UConn on Dec. 8.
In the well balanced scoring effort, junior guard James Life (Fort Myers, Fla.) scored a team-high 18 points to go along with 3 steals. Junior guard Brandon Thomas (San Antonio, Texas) added 15 points, five rebounds, six assists, and two steals.
The Minutemen (2-2) went into the locker room with a 39-24 advantage, extending their lead to as many as 40 points in the second half on three James Life free throws with 3:54 to play in the game.
For the first time all season, six Minutemen reached double-figures in the scoring column for the game lead by Thomas.
Junior Maurice Maxwell (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored 13 on 6-of-7 shooting, junior Rashuan Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.) tallied 12 points and 12 rebounds for his 21st career double-double, and sophomore Lawrence Carrier (San Bernardino, Calif.) reached double-figures with 11 points for the sixth time in his career. Junior center Stephane Lasme (Libreville, Gabon) rounded out the UMass offensive performances with 10 points, three assists and three blocked shots.
For the Tigers (1-4), Javon Randolph scored 17 points and Michael Bennett added seven in the loss.
Mass had six players with 10 or more points for the first time since Dec. 27, 1991 when they beat Harvard 98-63 in Springfield. Jerome Malloy (19), Lou Roe (15), Jim McCoy (14), Tony Barbee (13), Harper Williams (12) and Will Herndon (10).
* UMass posted its second-largest margin of victory in the history of the Mullins Center, winning by 36 points. The record of 39 was set on Jan. 22, 2000, as UMass beat Rhode Island, 89-50, which was the largest spread dating to its opening in 1993.
* James Life broke into double-figures for the first time at UMass with a game-high 18.
* Brandon Thomas scored 15 points - 14 in the first half. Thomas was the first Minuteman to reach double-figures as he canned a three-pointer with 8:00 left in the first half to give him 12 points to that point. Thomas had 14 points when Savannah State had 14 points as a team, with 4:00 left in the first half, as UMass led 34-14, its largest lead of the half.
* Lawrence Carrier scored in double-figures for the sixth time in his career with 11 points.
* Maurice Maxwell reached double figures in the second half with a lay-up with 9:30 left. Its his 28th career game with 10 or more and second this season as he finished with 13.
* Freeman had 12 points and 12 rebounds for his 21st career double-double. It was his 49th career game with 10 or more points.
* Stephane Lasme, who came into the game as the nation's leading shot blocker had three and now has 23 this season. He is averaging 5.8 after the game, and came into the game ahead of Wyoming's Justin Williams (6.0 per game). Lasme had 10 points for his eighth career double-figure game.
* After not scoring the entire first half, Rashaun Freeman scored the first points of the second half just seconds into the stanza. Freeman did have rebounds in the first half as UMass outrebounded Savannah State 21-11.
* UMass shot 55.2 percent from the floor in the first half and led 39-24. They then hit the first four shots of the second half.
* Thomas has scored UMass' first field goal in each of the first four games this season.
MinuteMatters: UMass won the opening tap ... Brandon Thomas opened the game's scoring 19 seconds into the game ... Chris Lowe was the game's first sub 1:06 into the game ... Lowe nailed the game's first three-pointer ... Travis Ford's sport coat came off with 9:47 left in the first half ... Lowe hit his second three of the game to take a 21-point lead at 51-30 with 15:37 left in the second half ... Lawrence Carrier drew a charge with 15:04 left in the second half.
MHERST - There were no anxious moments or suspense. The University of Massachusetts looked sloppy at times but was never threatened Monday as the Minutemen took care of business with a 93-57 win over Savannah State, which lived up to its billing as one of the worst college basketball teams in America.
Brandon Thomas scored UMass' first basket for the fourth straight game and put the Minutemen ahead for good 32 seconds into the game at the Mullins Center.
'If we were 4-0, I'd have to try to do that every game,' Thomas said.
Another Thomas basket, this time on the break, extended UMass' advantage to double digits at 19-8, just over six minutes later.
After holding a 15-point edge at intermission, the Minutemen (2-2) blew the game open in the second half.
Their advantage reached 40 points twice before the Tigers nudged it closer late against the UMass walk-ons.
'The best thing about tonight's game was that we did what we were supposed to do,' UMass coach Travis Ford said. 'We came out and we played hard and we won by a pretty convincing margin.'
Thomas said the Minutemen didn't celebrate long.
'Coach told us that there weren't going to be any more games like this one. We were all aware of their record last year, but I don't think anyone took them lightly,' Thomas said. 'We did get the W and we're looking forward to UConn.'
The Minutemen have the next nine days off before they take on the No. 3-ranked Huskies in Hartford at 9 p.m. Dec. 8.
UMass had six players score in double figures for the first time since Dec. 27, 1991, led by James Life with 18. Despite not scoring in the first half, Rashaun Freeman finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Thomas added 15 points and a career-high six assists.
Maurice Maxwell (13 points on 6-for-7 shooting), Stephane Lasme (10 points) and Lawrence Carrier (11) all had at least 10.
'That's good for us. We have trouble scoring in our shooting drills sometimes,' Ford said. 'To get six guys in double figures is a plus offensively for us.'
Freshman Chris Lowe nearly joined the club too. He finished with nine points, including the first two 3-pointers of his UMass career.
Javon Randolph led Savannah State (1-4) with 17 points.
Lasme, who has 16 blocks in the last two games, had two early but finished with just three.
All three UMass walk-ons made an appearance, including junior Matt Pennie, the former manager turned forward. He, Nana Ampim and Drew Rossi were a combined 0-for-4 from the floor.
'We struggled in the first half. We're turning the ball over too much,' said Thomas, who had two of the Minutemen's 21 turnovers. 'But we're still looking at it as a good win. We're coming off two losses, but hopefully this is getting us back on the right step.'

MHERST - In the days leading up to Monday night's game against Savannah State, University of Massachusetts coach Travis Ford pulled James Life aside.
I told him 'I'm gonna play you. You're going to play a lot of minutes,' Ford said.
Life, a junior guard who arrived at UMass with gaudy scoring numbers (25.4 points per game) from junior college, had struggled in his first three games as a Minuteman with just 16 points. Even his much hyped 3-point shot wasn't falling, as he had made just two-of-12 from deep range.
Ford wanted to keep Life on the floor against the Tigers, hoping he'd shoot his way out of his slump.
The plan seemed to work as Life led all scorers with 18 points in the 93-57 UMass win.
''Coach sent me in tried to give me opportunities to get some confidence back and score a little bit more. I've been struggling a lot as an individual,'' said Life, who rated his confidence at 10 percent. ''People are talking about me having a pretty good game tonight, but I only shot 30 percent (3-for-10) from behind the 3-point arc.''
But he was 3-for-7 in the second half, including a couple made from NBA range. He admitted there was progress.
''The difference between here and junior college is that here, everybody is good on my team. We have a lot of guys to look to. In junior college I could look to break people down and go to the rack every time,'' he said. ''I'm going to have to learn to be more consistent in everything I do. I think this was a good step for me.''
Ford said he was pleased with the progress.
''He played better tonight. He made shots. It wasn't the greatest percentage in the world, but the ball went in and he needs to see the ball going through the hole,'' Ford said. ''James Life is still going through the transition that a lot of junior college guys go through. There's a maturing process and a transition period.''
Ford said the Minutemen need Life to be a factor if they're going to have a successful season.
''We need him to get going. For our basketball team to succeed we need him to make some shots from the outside to open things up in the middle,'' Ford said.
STREAMING VIDEO - Monday's game marked a piece of technological history for the Minutemen. Video of the game was broadcast live over the Internet through the school's Web site at umassathletics.collegesports.com.
UVC, the student TV station, provided the video and the play-by-play.
The delay between the actual game and the time a viewer saw it on a high-speed Internet connection was about 10 to 20 seconds.
The athletic department hopes to stream video of all home games that aren't broadcast on TV.
MISCELLANEOUS - The 36 points was the second largest margin of victory for UMass in Mullins Center history. The Minutemen beat Rhode island by 39 on Jan. 22, 2000.
It was the most points UMass scored in a game since Dec. 22, 1999, when the Minutemen beat American-Puerto Rico, 102-65. The Minutemen had not reached 90 in a non-overtime game since then.
UMass plays at Savannah State next season. Including forfeits in the 2003-04 season, the Tigers have not beaten an NCAA opponent since Jan. 22, 2003.
Jeff Viggiano and Lawrence Carrier fouled out.

here wasn't much that the Massachusetts men's basketball team (2-2) had to do heading into its match up against Savannah State (1-4) last night at the Mullins Center. The Minutemen were facing a Tiger team that had gone 0-28 last season and were 1-3 in 2005. Although this match up appeared as somewhat of a trap for the Maroon and White, there was no shocker as UMass went on to defeat the Tigers 93-57, with six Minutemen posting point totals in the double-digits.
The Minutemen will have 10 days to prepare for the long-anticipated rematch against No. 3 Connecticut on Dec. 8 at the Hartford Civic Center.
Against the Tigers, junior transfer Brandon Thomas posted his second straight solid showing, and heated things up early. With less than seven minutes off the game clock, Thomas knocked down four baskets totaling nine points, including a trey at the 16:06 mark in the first half.
"[UMass coach Travis Ford] definitely stressed that there's not going to be anymore games like this on the schedule like this one," Thomas said. "We're all aware of [Savannah State's] record last year, but we still didn't want to take them lightly."
The San Antonio native fed the ball to junior Maurice Maxwell a few minutes later, who hit the three-pointer to give UMass an early 17-8 advantage with 13:59 remaining in the first half.
Ford was pleased with the performance of Thomas, as he put up 15 points, 14 of which came in the first half.
"Brandon Thomas is a very good basketball player and I like that he's put two games back-to-back. That's something we need to work on as a whole team - consistency," Ford said.
Junior Stephane Lasme, who led the nation in blocks going into this contest with 6.7 per game, recorded two in under three minutes of play, and added to his career total of 143 with another later in the game.
Although UMass did not relinquish its lead the entire night, Savannah State did not give up in the early going, cutting the Minuteman lead down to 11 after Chauncey Shaw hit both of his free throws off of a Lasme foul.
UMass had a dry streak of 2:23 afterwards, and a lay-up by junior Javon Randolph gave the Tigers hope, with the score then down to 23-14.
A three-pointer by Thomas put a stop to any chance for Savannah State and lay-ups by junior James Life, sophomore Lawrence Carrier, Thomas, and senior Jeff Viggiano added to the UMass lead in the first half.
Junior Rashaun Freeman, who leads the team in scoring with 65 points on the season, did not record a single point during the first half, but the All-American candidate came out in the second period ready to put the contest away.
Freeman and Maxwell exchanged baskets, and a three-pointer by freshman Chris Lowe made the second half of play unreachable for the Tigers.
As the Minutemen starters slowly trickled off the court and the score at 88-50 with the game nearing its end, the Minutemen walk-ons entered the game and closed out another chapter in the early Ford era.
NOTES: The six players to reach double-digits (Lasme, Freeman, Thomas, Maxwell, Life and Carrier) is the most for UMass since Dec. 27, 1991 when the Minutemen beat Harvard 98-63. UMass will play a UConn team that is currently ranked third in the nation and looking for revenge after UMass derailed the then-defending national champions 61-59 on Dec. 9, 2004 at the Mullins Center. Junior James Life's 18 points is a career-high for him, and led the team last night.
or the Massachusetts men's basketball team, last night's 93-57 blowout win against Savannah State (1-4) didn't provide much to learn from, as the Tigers are far below the level of the opponents that the Minutemen typically face.
But there were still some positive signs that UMass (2-2) hopes to build on.
One of the biggest highlights for UMass was the improved production of junior guard James Life. Life struggled in the first three games of the season, averaging 5.3 points per game while shooting just 21 percent from the field.
Last night Life led all scorers with 18 points, and finally began to show some of the shooting touch that was expected from the junior college transfer who averaged 25.4 points per game last year at Manatee Community College.
Although Life only connected on 5-of-14 shots from the floor, the 14 attempts were the most he has attempted in a game all season, and signal that he is starting to regain some confidence in his stroke.
"Right now [my confidence level is] probably about 10 percent," Life said. "I've been struggling quite a bit. It's an ongoing process for me, and I just have to try to find a way to get out of this slump."
Life, who UMass coach Travis Ford says works harder on his jump shot than any other player on the team, hopes that last night's game will serve as a step in the right direction as he looks to provide the outside threat that the Minutemen desperately need.
"I think it was a good opportunity to come out and score points," Life said. "I think this was a good step for me. I'm going to have to learn to be more consistent with everything I do."
Ford recruited Life to score points, and he knew that last night would be a good opportunity for him to get extended playing time and try to regain some of his confidence.
"I pulled James Life aside and told him, 'You're going to play a lot of minutes tonight. It could be close or we could be way up, but you're going to play.' I had to stick him in there and let him play through it," Ford said.
Ford feels that Life's shooting ability brings an important dynamic to the team, and hopes that last night's performance will help Life turn the corner.
"We need him to get going," Ford said. "For our basketball team to succeed we have to have him making shots from the perimeter to open things up inside.
MHERST -- The fans were worried. After consecutive losses to schools from North Carolina (Davidson) and Alabama (Alabama-Birmingham), the University of Massachusetts seemed to be heading south.
Last night, though, some Southern comfort arrived in the form of Savannah State, a school from Georgia that is definitely on the mind of Division 1 teams looking to pad their record. And the Tigers went down easily, 93-57, in a glorified scrimmage at the Mullins Center before a crowd of 2,633.
UMass had six players in double figures, led by James Life with 18. Joining the stat stuffing society were Brandon Thomas (15), Maurice Maxwell (13 on 6 of 7 shooting), Rashaun Freeman (12 points, 12 boards), Lawrence Carrier (11), and Stephane Lasme (10).
''We did what we were supposed to do," said UMass coach Travis Ford. ''We came out and played hard. We won by a pretty convincing margin."
Before the contest, Ford had referred to the Tigers as a ''dangerous" team. Physically outmatched at every position, though, they were never able to challenge UMass. The Minutemen overwhelmed Savannah on the boards with a 45-18 advantage.
The mismatch was embodied most clearly on a play when rail-thin forward Antonie Bronner drove the lane looking for a reverse layup, only to encounter Lasme. Bronner flicked a hook shot clear over the backboard to avoid the rejection.
The Tigers are in essence the Washington Generals of Division 1. They went 0-28 last year, putting together the first 0-fer in D-1 in 13 years, and just the second in the last 50. Technically, their losing streak stretched to 65 games at the beginning of the year, because the four wins in the 4-24 season of 2003-2004 were wiped out when it was revealed that the team had used an ineligible player. The fact that that player was the son of former head coach Ed Daniels only underscored the sense of disarray in the athletic program.
The Tigers entered Division 1 in 2002 in an effort to bring a higher profile to the school, but did so without committing the resources needed to compete at that level. Since then they have not come close to fulfilling the 13 full scholarships allotted to D-1 teams.
After last year's goose egg, the Tigers took some steps to try to gain some competitive footing. They began by firing Daniels, and hiring Horace Broadnax, a member of Georgetown's 1984 national championship team. A dapper and fiery coach, Broadnax gave up a career in law to try to win a most difficult court case. Broadnax says he is working with the equivalent of five full scholarship players.
The Tigers did break the skid in their first game this year, claiming a 3-point decision over Wilberforce, an NAIA school. Since then, they have been criss-crossing the country collecting their guarantees (last night's was $15,000 -- a small total only because UMass is returning the trip next year), and taking some gargantuan lumps.
They lost at Oregon by 60 -- managing only 23 points all game -- and then absorbed a 45-point pounding from Pacific. On the heels of a comparative nailbiter (a 23-point loss to Bethune-Cookman), they arrived at the Mullins Center.
''It's a necessary evil to fund some other positions and fund some scholarships, to make our program a little bit better," said Broadnax.
To their credit, the Tigers scrapped hard for 40 minutes, and often took UMass out of its rhythm. Point guard Javon Randolph was particularly impressive with 17 points.
For the 2-2 Minutemen, things get just a wee bit harder as they set their sights on the third-ranked Connecticut Huskies Dec. 8 at the Hartford Civic Center.
he only UMass guy that didn’t score was sentimental crowd favorite Sam the Minuteman.
In what amounted to a controlled scrimmage before a long layoff, UMass (2-2) crushed hapless Savannah State, 93-57, before 2,633 fans last night at the Mullins Center.
Junior college transfer James Life (18) came off the bench to lead six UMass players in double figures. Complementing Life’s effort were junior guard Brandon Thomas (15), guard Maurice Maxwell (13), power forward Rashaun Freeman (12 points, 12 rebounds) and centers Lawrence Carrier (11) and Stephane Lasme (10). The last time UMass had six players in double figures was on Dec. 27, 1991, against Harvard. UMass shot 54 percent from the floor to 38.5 percent for Savannah State and dominated the battle of the boards, 45-18.
“The best thing about tonight’s game is we did the things we were supposed to do,” UMass first-year coach Travis Ford said. “We came out, we played hard and we won by a pretty convincing margin, and that takes nothing away from Savannah State, who has been on the road a little bit. I am excited by the fact that we had six guys in double figures. That’s good for us, just for the fact that we have trouble scoring in our shooting drills. Just to see six guys in double figures is a plus offensively for us.”
UMass has 10 days to regroup before traveling to Hartford to face Jim Calhoun’s No. 3-ranked UConn team Dec. 8. UMass stunned UConn, 61-59, last December at the Mullins Center, and Ford understands the Huskies don’t lack for long memories.
“These next days, we have to work to make our basketball team better,” Ford said. “We are going to take a few days off just to rejuvenate our bodies, get ahead academically by concentrating on our school work and getting back together on Thursday making our team better. That will hopefully help us prepare for UConn, which we obviously know is going to be a very big challenge for us.”
The Minutemen and the Tigers met for the first time and the only basketball connection between the two institutions was that Ford faced them twice while at Eastern Kentucky.
Savannah State (1-4) technically had lost 65 in a row before beating Wilberforce, 63-59, in the season opener Nov. 18. The Tigers had to forfeit their four wins in the 2003-04 season because of an ineligible player on the roster.
“There are the haves and the have nots, and we’re just catching up to the have nots,” coach Horace Broadnax said.
