MHERST - The Siena men's basketball coach will have a familiar name when he brings his team to the Mullins Center at 7 tonight to play the University of Massachusetts.
Fran McCaffery looked poised to become the next coach of the Minutemen in March 2001. Then the coach at North Carolina-Greensboro, McCaffery interviewed and impressed in Amherst and was rumored to be the leading candidate to replace Bruiser Flint after he was forced to resign.
But when Villanova coach Steve Lappas unexpectedly became available, then-athletic director Robert Marcum went with the more recognizable name and McCaffery stayed put.
Four years later UMass changed coaches again after firing Lappas and McCaffery finally moved north. He will coach his first game at the Mullins Center tonight, but it will be from the visitors' bench.
McCaffery, who was hired to replace Rob Lanier, is one of three first-year coaches Travis Ford will face in his first year in charge in Amherst.
The Saints (4-3), who were expected by most to finish at or near the bottom of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference this season, have done surprisingly well despite missing senior center Michael Haddix. He is out for the season with an Achilles' injury after averaging a team-best 14.9 points and 6.4 rebounds last year.
After losing their first two games at Penn and Syracuse, the Saints won four straight before falling at Canisius Dec. 11.
Staying close in an 82-77 loss to the Quakers, who beat Siena by 27 the year before, was a confidence- building experience early.
''We realized we could play,'' McCaffery said. ''We can beat some people. We're not going to win every game, but we're going to be able to be in games and we can run this system and have success.''
Siena is winning unconventionally. Only two of the eight regulars in the Saints' lineup stand 6-feet-7 or taller and one, junior Mousse Diop, is averaging less than 10 minutes per game. The other, David Ryan, who starts at center, is second on the team in 3-point attempts.
The Saints are putting at least four and often five players regularly on the perimeter on offense.
Sophomore point guard Kojo Mensah leads the team with 17.7 points, 4.6 assists and 7.6 rebounds per game. He had a triple-double in Siena's win over Albany.
Antoine Jordan, a 6-foot-4 senior has been thriving at power forward despite playing out of position. He's averaging 17.0 points and 9.0 rebounds.
''We've had guys playing in the post and doing a good job of it, but they're not really post players,'' McCaffery said. ''But they're doing the best they can. They're good players. They're smart and they're compensating. It's been fun to watch them learn the system and gain confidence in the system and themselves.''
Siena's lack of size creates matchup problems for almost anybody it faces. The Minutemen are no exception.
''It creates huge mismatch problems,'' Ford said. ''They're a good basketball team. It's an adjustment trying to figure out how to guard them when all of them are 6-foot-2, 6-3, 6-4.''
Ford has had big men Rashaun Freeman, Stephane Lasme and Dante Milligan guarding 6-foot-6 forwards Jeff Viggiano and Brandon Thomas and even 6-foot-4 James Life in practice to try to simulate the experience.
''They're not that big, but they're quick and they all shoot,'' Freeman said. ''Me, Dante and Stephane have been guarding Vig in practice to get prepared for Siena. It's hard because you're not used to it.''
Milligan isn't used to playing at all. The former Pittsburgh big man will play his first game at UMass after sitting out the last two semesters under NCAA transfer rules.
Freeman predicted success for Milligan.
''We know how good he is,'' Freeman said. ''He's really going to help us as far as scoring goes and having another guy who can rebound.''
NOTES - The last time the two teams met was the last trip to the postseason for UMass. The Saints edged the Minutemen 66-65 in the first round of the 2000 National Invitation Tournament.
Craig Carter, who was director of basketball operations at UMass under Lappas last year, is an assistant coach for McCaffery.

OUDONVILLE -- They know his story, admit he's "a handful" and describe him as "big and aggressive."
But if playing against former Schenectady High School star Rashaun Freeman holds any special meaning for Siena men's basketball players, they refused to acknowledge it earlier this week.
"I'm not from around here," senior and Baltimore native Antoine Jordan said. "Makes no difference to me. I take it as another game."
Except, Freeman isn't just another power forward.
He is indeed big (6-feet-9, 255 pounds) and aggressive (16 points, 9.4 rebounds per game). A handful? Ask the Hartford team he dropped 25 points on earlier this season.
Even if the Saints don't buy into the hype of facing a player who grew up 20 miles from their campus, their ability to contain him likely will determine tonight's game against Massachusetts in Amherst.
"He's big, he's strong and he's good around the basket," Siena forward David Ryan said. "It's a challenge when you're going up against someone who's supposed to be bigger and stronger. I take it personally, and so does the whole team."
As for Freeman? He admitted to sensing something different about this game.
"I think it would be more if it were back in Albany," he said. "But Siena is good. I get a lot of support from back home, and I've heard there are going to be a lot of fans and media coming out here."
Freeman offered only a lukewarm assessment of his season, saying, "I'm far from satisfied."
Since high school, he's established high standards. He helped Schenectady to a 2001 Class A title and was the Times Union Player of the Year in 2002. As a freshman at UMass, he won the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year award. Last year, he averaged 15.4 points and 7.8 rebounds.
He said this season he wants to be more assertive.
"I tend to start off well, then get set back," Freeman said. "If I'm going against a good team, I'm OK, but if I'm playing a team that's not as good, I'm not as focused."
That shouldn't be a problem against Siena, because for a team that lacks size (just one starter taller than 6-6), the Saints tend to hold their own against big forwards. Earlier this season, Siena kept Fordham forward Bryant Dunston -- a player similar to Freeman in size and skill -- to his season average of 16 points.
"They're very good defensively," UMass coach Travis Ford said. "They have guys like Antoine Jordan, who's very good under the basket, strong and athletic. He's a smart player. With guys like him, they can mix in some zone defenses, and it's very effective."
UMass, though, can force Siena to contend with more than one scoring big man. Its second-leading scorer, Brandon Thomas, stands 6-6 and averages 10.3 points. Four other Minutemen -- all 6-5 or taller -- average at least 8 points.
Not that Freeman needs much help.
"He's a really good player who can play anywhere, in any program," Siena coach Fran McCaffery said. "Anybody would want him, the Big East, the (Atlantic Coast Conference). We have to work very hard to defend someone like Rashaun Freeman." Notes: McCaffery seemed unconcerned about Siena showing rust after an 11-day break. But the same couldn't be said for Ford, whose team last played Dec. 12. "We haven't been able to practice consistently," Ford said, "and we needed to badly." ... Add one more big man to the UMass rotation -- tonight the Minutemen debut 6-9 forward Dante' Milligan, who transferred from Pittsburgh last winter.
MHERST, Mass. - Playing against the school he grew up just miles away from, Schenectady, N.Y. native, Rashaun Freeman tallied a team-high 23 points in leading UMass to a 78-69 win over Siena on Friday night at the Mullins Center. The Minutemen are now 4-3 overall heading to Madison Square Garden for the Panasonic Holiday Festival.
Senior Jeff Viggiano added 12 points, his third game in a row in double-figures. Junior James Life also had 12 points for the Minutemen. Freshman point guard Chris Lowe had a career-high 10 points and three assists
Redshirt-sophomore Dante Milligan made his long-awaited UMass debut after transferring from Pittsburgh last winter and made immediate contributions. He scored seven points and grabbed eight rebounds in 20 minutes.
The Saints got to within two points at 71-69 as Kojo Mensah (23 points) hit a free throw with 1:33 left. Chris Lowe nailed a running jumper with 1:02 left to make it 73-69. Life then stole the ball with less than a minute leading to Lowe making two free throws with 49.2 seconds left to seal the win, putting UMass ahead 75-69.
Siena cut UMass' lead to just four with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game at 59-55 but Life's 3-point field goal put the Minutemen up 62-55. Viggiano hit another trey to put UMass up 69-58 with 6:12 left.
Freeman got hot early in the second half as he scored six of the Minutemen's first 10 points to put UMass up 54-39 five minutes into the stanza.
UMass took a 44-34 lead into halftime as the Minutemen posted their most points in a first half in two seasons. They led Marshall 46-29 at half on Dec. 20, 2003.
Freeman scored 10 points in the first half as he made all four of his field goal attempts and two free throws. Both teams shot very well in the first half as UMass made 52 percent of their shots (15-of-29) while the Saints were 48 percent (13-of-27) from the floor. Siena's Kojo Mensah tallied 15 in the first 20 minutes.
Siena closed the gap to 23-22 with 8:58 left in the first half as Tay Fisher canned a 3-point field goal to wrap a 16-9 run over a six-minute span - that was as close as Siena would get for the rest of the half.
UMass rushed out to a 14-6 lead in the first five minutes of the game which was punctuated by a Viggiano block, defensive rebound and fast-break thunder dunk.
UMass returns to action on Tuesday night, Dec. 27, at Madison Square Garden as the Minutemen take on St. Peter's at 6:30 p.m. in the first game of the Panasonic Holiday Festival. Host St. John's takes on Columbia in the second game at 8:30 p.m. The winners play the championship game on Wednesday, Dec. 28 at 8:30 p.m. The consolation game will be at 6:30 p.m. All games will be telecast on MSG Network and available with streaming video on www.msgnetwork.com.
laying against his home-area team, Schenectady native Rashaun Freeman, scored in double-figures for the sixth time in seven games this season with 23. It was his 15th career game and third this season with 20 points while it was the 52nd career double-figure game. Freeman is just four points shy of 1,000 for his career. He is set to become the 37th UMass player to break the historic milestone.
* Freeman also posted his fourth double-double of the season and 23rd of his career with 12 rebounds.
* Dante Milligan made his UMass debut with 12:32 left in the first half as he entered as a substitute. Milligan had sat out the previous calendar year after transferring from Pittsburgh last winter. Milligan scored his first UMass point on a free throw with 8:42 left in the first half. Milligan finished with seven points and eight rebounds.
* Jeff Viggiano scored in double-figures for his third game in a row and fourth time this season with 12 points. He now has 30 career games with 10 or more points.
* UMass came into the game third in the nation with 8.2 blocks per game and swatted 11 shots against Siena including seven in the first half.
* UMass piled up 44 points in the first half, the most points UMass scored in a first half since Dec. 20, 2003 as UMass led Marshall, 46-29. All nine players who saw action in the first half, scored points against Siena.
* The game against the "Saints" of Siena was the first of what could be six regular-season games against teams with the name "Saint" in its name. UMass faces St. Peter's in their next game on Tuesday at Madison Square Garden and could face St. John's on Wednesday in the second day of action at MSG, should both UMass and St. John's have the same result on Tuesday.
MHERST - After the University of Massachusetts lost 66-63 to Davidson last month, University of Massachusetts coach Travis Ford lamented that none of his players wanted to make big plays late in the game.
At risk of a worse collapse Friday night, freshman Chris Lowe stepped up and helped the Minutemen escape with a 78-69 win over Siena at the Mullins Center.
An 8-2 Siena run brought the Saints within two at 71-69 with one minute, 33 seconds left. Lowe, who had battled the Saints' full-court trap throughout the second half, cut into the lane and hit a floater to make it 73-69.
'That's what a point guard is supposed to do,' Lowe said. 'The point guard is supposed to want the ball at the end of the game. I had the ball in my hands and the shot clock was going down. I went to my favorite move, the floater in the lane, and I had confidence it would go in.'
Ford was impressed with his fortitude.
'It wasn't the greatest shot in the world, but I like that he stepped up and took it,' Ford said. 'I respect guys that want the basketball and aren't afraid to make the shot.'
Siena coach Fran McCaffery also was impressed.
'He made a terrific play. You have to give Chris credit for that. If that doesn't go in, the game could have been a lot different,' McCaffery said.
On the subsequent play, James Life tapped the ball the ball away from Kenny Hasbrouck at the other end. Stephane Lasme recovered it and passed it to Lowe, who was quickly fouled. He made both free throws to extend the lead to 75-69. UMass made three throws down the stretch to clinch the victory.
'I think tonight took a big step for Chris,' Ford said. 'It got to be a very tight game and he handled the pressure. He made big shots. He made free throws. That's when you gain your respect, in tight situations. He was fatigued and he fought through it. I asked him late if he wanted a quick break and he emphatically said no. I think his teammates really respected that. Without Chris Lowe we don't win the basketball game.'
Jeff Viggiano admitted he thought about the Davidson loss as the Saints made their run.
'I was hoping we weren't going to have another Davidson episode. Tonight we just kept attacking. In the Davidson game we were waiting for the clock to run out,' he said. 'There was a time we stalled a little and they made their run. But we didn't panic and we gutted it out tonight.'
Lowe finished with a career-high 10 points. Rashaun Freeman led UMass with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Viggiano and James Life each had 12. Dante Milligan had eight points and seven rebounds in his UMass debut.
Antoine Jordan had 14 of his 18 in the second half for Siena, while Kojo Mensah had 23 to lead the Saints.
UMass looked like it was heading for a blowout win early in the second half when six straight points by Freeman put the Minutemen ahead 54-39. But Jordan fueled a 13-3 Siena run that silenced the crowd. He made both free throws after a Travis Ford technical foul to cap the spurt that made it 57-52 with 11:09 left.
Three-pointers by Viggiano and Life, whose came from NBA range, helped UMass push its lead back to double figures at 69-58, but the Saints scored eight straight to make it tight for the rest of the game.
The Minutemen return to action Tuesday when they face St. Peter's at 6:30 p.m. in the Panasonic Holiday Classic at Madison Square Garden.
'I thought tonight, in spurts, we played some of the best basketball we've played,' Ford said. 'We just couldn't get any momentum. But we won the game. Hopefully we can build off it.'

MHERST - Dante Milligan was more helpful than rusty in his University of Massachusetts debut Friday and his performance proved essential to the Minutemen's 78-69 win.
The sophomore transfer from Pittsburgh had seven points and eight rebounds in 20 minutes. He was forced into more action than he might have expected because of Stephane Lasme's foul trouble. Milligan displayed good rebounding instincts, solid interior passing and shooting range out to 18 feet.
'I thought I did well tonight,' Milligan said. 'I didn't do anything out of my nature. I just tried to do whatever I could to help us win the game.'
UMass coach Travis Ford said he was pleased with Milligan's approach.
'What I liked about Dante is he really made things happen,' Ford said. 'He was batting balls, getting deflections and doing a lot of hustle plays. That's all he needs to concentrate on ... He's still trying to figure out Division I basketball a little bit, but what he did out there for us was extremely valuable because Stephane didn't have his best game.'
Junior Rashaun Freeman said Milligan has more to offer.
'I know from playing against him every day in practice that he's a great player,' Freeman said. 'You didn't even see his best. Dante is a real scoring threat. The fans haven't seen that, but they will.'
MAAC STRETCH - The Minutemen stay in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference portion of their schedule as they head to New York City to face St. Peter's Tuesday in the Panasonic Holiday Festival at Madison Square Garden. The Peacocks are 5-4 and 2-0 in the MAAC. It's the first time the Minutemen will play the Peacocks since the 1995 NCAA Tournament and the first trip for UMass to the Garden since playing Fordham there in 1996.
CHRISTMAS - With just three days between Friday's game and Tuesday's contest against St. Peter's, the Minutemen won't go home for Christmas. They will leave for New York Sunday night and attend the game between the Knicks and Nets Monday as a team.
'We don't get much of a break because of the way the schedule is,' Ford said. 'We'll celebrate Christmas as a team together. That's part of being a student-athlete at times.'
GRAND APPROACH - Freeman's 23 points moved him within four points of becoming the 37th 1,000-point scorer for UMass. He had his 15th career double-double and 23rd 20-point game. Freeman has been in double figures 52 times in his career.
FORD TECH - Ford picked up his second technical foul of the season with 11 minutes, nine seconds left in the second half. He had the other in the Dec. 8 loss to Connecticut.
BLOCKS - UMass entered the game averaging 8.2 blocked shots per game. The Minutemen Friday had 11 led by Lasme's three. Seven different player registered a block including generously listed 6-foot guard Chris Lowe, who rejected the first shot of his college career.

MHERST -- For now, Massachusetts coach Travis Ford can concentrate on a saint named Nick, while forgetting about all of Nick's brethren.
After all, the 2005-06 season is one in which the saints will truly come marching in for UMass. Last night, the Minutemen dispatched the Siena Saints, 78-69. After the holiday, the Minutemen go down to New York for the Panasonic Holiday Festival where they will open up against Saint Peter's, and quite possibly face St. John's in the finals. Then after the New Year, UMass will open its Atlantic 10 season with two of the first three games coming against Saint Joseph's and Saint Louis.
UMass began the saintly stretch with some sinning, relinquishing all but 2 points of a 15-point second-half lead. The Minutemen were bailed out late by freshman point guard Chris Lowe. With 1:06 remaining, Lowe hit a tough shot in traffic to extend UMass's lead to 73-69. Guarded tightly by Kojo Mensah with the shot clock running down, Lowe crossed over, spun, and lofted a lefty floater in the lane to make it a two-possession game.
''A point guard is supposed to want the ball at the end of the game," Lowe said. ''I went to my favorite move, the floater in the lane. I work on that every day in practice."
Then after James Life slapped the ball away from Siena on the other end, Lowe (10 points) was fouled and hit both ends of a 1-and-1. The Saints never threatened after that.
''It got to be a very tight game, and he handled the pressure," said Ford. ''That's when you gain the respect --in tight situation. Without Chris Lowe, we don't win the basketball game."
And without Rashaun Freeman, UMass wouldn't even come close. The junior center scored 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting and hauled down 12 rebounds. That contributed heavily to UMass's 42-20 dominance on the boards.
UMass (4-3) also got 12 points apiece from Life and Jeff Viggiano.
Perhaps most encouraging for the Minutemen, though, was the emergence of Dante Milligan. A transfer from Pittsburgh who hasn't played regularly since high school in 2003 (he redshirted his freshman year, then transferred after spot duty in five games last season), Milligan was impressive in his first game of eligibility. He scored 7 points, pulled down eight rebounds, and ignited the crowd of 3,523 with some fine interior passing. A former honorable mention McDonald's All-American, Milligan said that he wasn't too excited for his return to the hardwood.
''It's just playing basketball," he said. ''I've been playing basketball all my life."
''You didn't even see his best," said Freeman. ''Dante is a real scoring threat."
''Dante really made things happen," said Ford. ''He was up in there hitting balls away. He was doing a lot of hustle plays. That's all he needs to concentrate on, because his skill level is probably still a little game-rusty."
The gritty Siena team (4-4) was led by Mensah, who played a fierce and poised game at the point with 23 points and seven assists. Antoine Jordan added 18 points.
''I was real pleased with our effort," said first-year coach Fran McCaffery, a finalist for the UMass coaching position in 2001 before Steve Lappas was chosen. ''We kept fighting."
UMass will practice today, spend Christmas together, then head to New York tomorrow night for games Tuesday and Wednesday.
''It's part of being a student-athlete," Ford said. ''Sometimes your schedule permits giving them a couple of days off, but our schedule this year just doesn't permit it."
MHERST - Sienas collapsing 2-3 zone defense and perimeter pressure successfully delayed Rashaun Freemans entry into UMass 1,000-point club.
But that was about the only thing the Saints were able to deny from the 6-foot-9 junior center.
Freeman gave his most efficient two-way effort this season, lifting the Minutemen to a 78-69 victory over Siena at the Mullins Center.
Freeman hit 7-of-10 shots from the floor and 9-of-11 from the free-throw line for 23 points. He needs just four more to become the 37th UMass player to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Freeman added 12 rebounds to cap the 15th double-double of his career.
Hes very good offensively, hes getting better defensively and I thought Rashauns best game was tonight, UMass first-year coach Travis Ford said. It was the first night that Rashaun made things happen, and everybody else fed off Rashaun.
Up to this point, I think Rashaun has been feeding off everybody else, and tonight, he decided, Im going to go get 12 rebounds. Not just the rebounds that come to me, Im going to go get them. And, he created some shots by being very creative and aggressive offensively.
Siena (4-4) was able to cramp the Minutemens (4-3) transition game with full-court pressure. Offensively, their motion offense created easy shots for guards Kojo Mensah (23 points) and Tay Fisher (13).
But Siena coach Fran McCaffery had nothing in his satchel full of gimmicks that could offset a huge discrepancy in height and depth. The Minutemen outrebounded the Saints, 42-21, and registered 11 blocks.
In addition, UMass enjoyed a 32-5 advantage in points off the bench, with the outside shooting of James Life (12 points) and Chris Lowe (10) doing the main damage.
Starters Jeff Viggiano (12) and Maurice Maxwell were deadly from the perimeter when the Saints zone collapsed down on Freeman. Dante Milligan, a transfer from Pittsburgh, scored seven points with eight rebounds in his UMass debut and provided Ford with an additional low-post presence.
Im very excited about our bench, Ford said. You could substitute the guys we have on the bench and start them in the game because we dont change a lot.
Mensah and Antoine Jordan (18) brought the Saints back from a 15-point deficit with a late run. A Mensah free throw cut UMass lead to 71-69 with 1:33 to play.
But Lowe, a freshman point guard, responded by hitting a floater in the lane and then two free throws to ice the game.
MHERST, Mass. -- The players slipped them on before the shoot-around Friday, hoping to catch Siena coach Fran McCaffery by surprise.
Jeff Viggiano tries to keep a handle on Tay Fisher. |
McCaffery walked into the gym to find each of his players wearing a green T-shirt with the words, "Fran's family," written on the front and the phrase, "Get it done," scrawled on the back.
Less than half an hour after Siena lost to Massachusetts, 78-69, in front of 3,523 at the Mullins Center, McCaffery stood outside the Siena locker room, his wife and children nearby, and laughed about the shirts.
The Saints record fell to 4-4.
They lost their second consecutive game.
But something about the way McCaffery spoke of the shirts, about the way his team fought back from two double-digit deficits, about the way McCaffery and fellow players consoled a freshman point guard after a decisive turnover, suggested that the Saints are indeed becoming a family, and, for 40 minutes, they never relented in their quest to "Get it done."
"That was great," McCaffery said of the T-shirts, which were created by an unnamed friend of his. "It really meant a lot to me. We pride ourselves on those things, on being a family atmosphere here."
The Saints almost had an upset victory on which to pride themselves, too.
After trailing by double digits for the better part of the second half, Siena found itself behind by just two points with 1:06 remaining. That's when UMass freshman Chris Lowe drove toward the paint and, with Siena's Kojo Mensah blanketing him, elevated for a floater that pushed the Minutemen's lead to four.
The Saints never came any closer.
Freshman Kenny Hasbrouck turned the ball over at the other end, and UMass converted three of four free throws down the stretch.
"That was a very big shot," Mensah said. "A floater with a person running at you? That's a very tough shot."
Said Siena senior Antoine Jordan: "Good defense, even better shot."
By mid-way through the second half, it appeared the Saints had no shot against a UMass team that starts four players 6-foot-6 or taller. Only one Siena starter (6-7 David Ryan) is taller than 6-4.
former Schenectady High School star Rashaun Freeman dominant in the post and the Minutemen racing to a 42-20 advantage on the glass, the Saints appeared finished, down by 15 with 15 minutes remaining.
Instead, Siena chopped the lead to four. UMass pushed it back to 11. The Saints cut it to two.
"There's a reason they play 40-minute games," Ryan said. "We're going to play all 40 of them. It'd be a shame if we didn't."
Ryan spent most of those 40 minutes tangling in the post with Freeman, who finished with 23 points on 7-for-10 shooting to go with 12 rebounds. UMass coach Travis Ford called it, "the best game he's played."
Mensah led Siena with 23. Jordan paced the Saints (4-4, 1-1 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) late, scoring 14 of his 18 points in the second half, helping Siena erase most of the 11-point lead the Minutemen (3-3) took to halftime.
As usual, Siena players expressed no surprise at the close finish or the comeback. They expect, they say, nothing short of "Get it done."
"That's the way this team is," guard Tay Fisher said. "We're a family. Fran is our leader. We all believe in ourselves. No one here is surprised. A lot of people didn't believe in us, but we believe in ourselves.
"We're not happy that we lost, but we're happy with the effort."
MHERST, Mass. -- Before Friday's game against Massachusetts, Siena players described Rashaun Freeman as "big and aggressive."
Playing against the former Schenectady star did nothing to change their impressions.
"He's big, strong and he plays hard," Siena forward David Ryan said, repeating almost verbatim the statements he made two days earlier. "He competes."
Freeman finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds to help UMass top Siena, 78-69.
Freeman also made 7 of 10 shots and went to the free-throw line six times, where he converted 9 of 11 tries.
"He plays with a lot of energy," Siena coach Fran McCaffery said.
The Saints tried to slow Freeman several ways. In the first half, they mostly played him man-to-man but brought help from the perimeter whenever Freeman touched the ball in the paint. Later, Siena switched to a zone, hoping to put more pressure on UMass' guards and prevent them from even getting Freeman the ball.
Siena found some success with the latter strategy, but Freeman still managed 13 second-half points.
Freeman lobbed Siena a compliment after the game.
"I give them credit," he said. "They came to play and did what they needed to do."
Chin up: Freshman Kenny Hasbrouck came to the bench for the last time with 16 seconds remaining in the game. He slumped into a chair and buried his face in his jersey. Seconds earlier, he'd been responsible for a turnover that scuttled the Saints' comeback.
McCaffery walked over to offer some consolation.
"He told me I played a good game," Hasbrouck said. "He said I had a couple mistakes, but I can fix them."
Hasbrouck endured an up-and-down night. He played well defensively but finished with just five points on 2-for-8 shooting.
He stayed positive after the game.
"I feel like I did good on defense but played bad on offense," Hasbrouck said. "But I learned a lot."
This and that: Massachusetts took full advantage of its edge in size, blocking 11 Siena shots. ... Siena shot just 7-for-21 from 3-point range. ... Siena's starters took few breaks. No bench player recorded double-digit minutes, though Levi Osby and Mousse Diop played nine each. ... The Saints' only lead was a 2-0 advantage 18 seconds into the first half.
