MHERST - Travis Ford isn't happy. The University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach wasn't happy with his team's play in Thursday's lackluster 79-68 win over Yale and he hasn't been satisfied with its play in practice preparing for tonight's game at 7 against Miami at the Mullins Center. It is the last nonconference game for both teams.
"This team is not a good practice team," Ford said of the 10-3 Minutemen. "We've tried to do some things differently in practice. Try to change up the routine a little to spice things up I guess. We don't seem to practice very well. We've tried to liven it up a little bit and make it a little less routine and try to get a little spunk into them.
"This is a group that has trouble focusing for an hour-and-a-half to two-hour period," Ford added. "You hope that when the lights come on they play better and maybe they're picking up more than I think they are. I'm anxious to see how we respond. We need to play better obviously than we did against Yale."
Ford said he's asked his seniors to take more responsibility for getting their teammates properly motivated.
"Sometimes they get tired of always hearing it from the coach," Ford said.
Senior big man Rashaun Freeman is trying to fulfill Ford's request.
"I think it's about being ready to play and wanting it more. We have to be the first ones diving for balls and going after it," Freeman said. "They're a little banged up. They're going to come in wanting to win and go into their conference play and we're trying to do the same thing. They're going to come out hungry. We need to stop their first punch."
Miami arrives in Amherst on a three-game losing streak at 7-7. The Hurricanes opened the year at 6-3, including an upset of then No. 21 Georgia Tech Dec. 3. Since then they've dropped four of the last five. After losing at home to lowly Binghamton, Miami dropped back-to-back games to Louisville and Nebraska and is 1-5 outside of the Convocation Center in Coral Gables.
"They're a hungry tiger right now," Ford said. "They're hungry to get a win and we know we're going to get their best effort. We better be ready to play."
Injuries have played a role in the Hurricanes' recent struggles and could thin the Miami lineup tonight. Leading scorer Jack McClinton, who suffered a knee injury against Louisville and missed Saturday's loss to Nebraska in the Orange Bowl Classic, is a game-time decision. McClinton began his career at Siena, before transferring after his freshman year.
McClinton sat out last year and was averaging 18.7 points per game this year before the injury. Ford said he expects the 6-foot-1 guard from Baltimore to be in the lineup.
"He's going to play," Ford said. "I don't think there's any question. We're preparing as if he's going to play."
Less likely to play is senior big man Anthony King who started the first eight games before sitting out with a wrist injury.
King is one of the few remaining players from the last time these teams met Dec. 12, 2004. The Minutemen arrived in south Florida fresh off their upset of Connecticut, but took an 80-53 pounding by Miami. Anthony Harris, then a sophomore and now a senior, had 16 points and seven assists in that game. He leads Miami this year with 3.8 assists per game.
Brian Ashbury is the Hurricanes' top scorer who is expected to play. The 6-foot-7 guard is averaging 13 points and 5.9 rebounds.
NOTES: UMass is 35-39 all-time against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents. ... Freeman needs 23 points to become the eighth player in school history to reach 1,500 in his career. ... Stephane Lasme needs 11 blocked shots to join Marcus Camby as the only Minutemen with 300 in their career. Lasme leads the Atlantic 10 in both rebounding (9.5 per game) and blocked shots (4.46 per game). ... Despite recent struggles, Tiki Mayben leads the Atlantic 10 in assists with 4.85 per game. ... McClinton and Ricky Harris are both alumni of Calvert Hall High School in Baltimore. ... The Minutemen are tied for the nation's second most road wins with seven. Only Butler (eight) has more, while Washington State also has seven.

MHERST, Mass. - Anthony Harris scored a career-high 33 points as Miami held off a late charge from UMass for a 72-71 win Tuesday night in the Mullins Center. Senior center Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.) and junior guard Gary Forbes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each scored 16 points to lead UMass. Freeman also tallied 10 rebounds for the 36th double-double of his career. UMass will next play at La Salle on Saturday with tip-off slated for 4 p.m.

Senior Stephane Lasme (Libreville, Gabon) was a major force in the rally posting four of his seven blocked shots in the final seven minutes.
Four players, paced by Freeman and Forbes, finished the night in double-figures for UMass. Life ended the night with 14 points, while Lasme posted 10 points, seven blocks and five rebounds.
For Miami (8-7), Jack McClinton scored 15 off the bench and Denis Clemente scored 11 to round out the Hurricane scoring.
Miami shot 50 percent on the night hitting 26-of-52 from the floor, while UMass shot 44.8 percent going 26-of-58. Free throw shooting hurt UMass who hit 13-of-25 from the charity stripe compared to 9-for-15 for Miami. UMass did hold an edge on the glass outrebounding Miami 37-to-29.
The game featured four ties and 10 lead changes.
UMass will next travel to La Salle on Saturday, Jan. 6, for a 4:00 p.m. tip-off.
ashaun Freeman had his sixth double-double of the season and 36th of his career with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
* Rashaun Freeman scored 10 of UMass' first 11 points converting his first five field goals of the game, that all came in the first 7:03 of action. It put him in double-figures for the 13th time in 14 games this season and 77th time in 99 career games. He finished with 16.
* James Life scored in double-figures for the ninth time this season and 24th in his career with 14.
* Stephane Lasme reached double-figures with a huge second half. After one point at halftime, Lasme tallied 10 in the second half to finish with 11. It was his eighth game this season with 10 or more and 28th career.
* Lasme had six of his seven blocks in the second half including four in the final seven minutes of the game.
* Forward Etienne Brower had a career-high five assists.
* Gary Forbes returned to double-figures with 14 points. It was his 10th game this season with 10 or more and 34th of his career.

Ford On UMass' Play In The Paint:
"We got it down there anytime we wanted to but we didn't get enough finishes. When we got it down there, they just fouled us, which was probably a smart thing to do and that's what they kept doing."
Ford On The Play Of The Team:
"We have not once this year had everybody playing consistently. Guys think it's going to come easy, but you have to work at this game, realize your weaknesses and focus in on those weaknesses and really try to get better."
Ford On The Miami Guards:
"We got dominated by their guards. What I saw were guards driving for layups or shooting threes. Their guards were scoring every time I turned around. They were just a whole lot better than us tonight. We tried everything and nothing worked."
MHERST - The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team's free-throw problems finally cost the Minutemen in a big way. UMass missed too many down the stretch and fell 72-71 to Miami Tuesday at the Mullins Center.
![]() James Life elevates and finishes the dunk. |
Miami led 65-57 with 6 minutes, 45 seconds remaining, but the Minutemen climbed back in and cut their deficit to 68-66 with 2:34 left. After Jack McClinton made both ends of a one-and-one, James Life scored on a driving scoop with 1:23 remaining to make it 70-68.
Following Dwayne Collins' free throw that increased Miami's lead to 71-68, UMass had several chances to tie down the stretch, but couldn't make a shot. Stephane Lasme missed two free throws with six seconds left and immediately fouled Brian Asbury.
The Hurricanes' second-leading scorer had been held scoreless until that point, but after missing the first free throw, he made the second to seal the win. Gary Forbes made a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but UMass fell short.
"We battled, but at the end they wanted it a little bit more," Rashaun Freeman said. "Their guards hurt us on drives and that was the difference in the game. ... Obviously the free throws were a problem too."
The Minutemen shot 52 percent (13-of-25) from the line for the game and made just eight-of-17 in the second half (47.1 percent).
"They were just fouling us which was a smart thing to do," Ford said. "They were just letting us get it inside and then fouled us."
The Minutemen had no answer for Anthony Harris. The senior point guard came in averaging 7.2 points and had 31 points combined in his last six games. But he was dominant Tuesday with 33 points, the most by a UMass opponent since David Hawkins of Temple had 41 in a double-overtime game in 2004.
"Anthony played the game taking what they gave him. We wanted him to be aggressive," Miami coach Frank Haith said. "It seemed like Ant made every shot when we needed it."
McClinton, who was questionable with an injury coming into the game, added 15 points.
"We were able to make shots," Haith said. "It's amazing how when you do that a lot of other things tend to go well. We were better defensively and rebounding the ball because we were shooting the ball well."
Freeman had 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead UMass, but he had just three points and one field goal attempt in the second half.
Gary Forbes was a bright spot for the Minutemen with 16 points, five rebounds and three assists. Life added 14 points, while Lasme had 10 points and seven blocked shots.
The loss ends UMass' nonconference schedule at 10-4. The Minutemen begin Atlantic 10 play at 4 p.m. Saturday at La Salle. Ford promised changes between now and then.
"We haven't had everyone play consistently in one game. Guys think it's going to come easy," Ford said. "You have to work at this game to get better. You have to realize your weaknesses and really work to get better at them. There's going to be a lot done between now and Saturday. A lot."

MHERST - University of Massachusetts coach Travis Ford tried zones, trapping, pressing and different defensive assignments, but at the end of the 72-71 loss Tuesday he still had not come up with a way to slow Miami's guards.
![]() Gary Forbes drives on Denis Clemente. |
"We got dominated by their guards," Ford said. "That's the best word I know to use. ... What I saw was their guards driving by, shooting layups or 3s. That's all I saw.
"Their guards were scoring every time I turned around," Ford continued. "That was the biggest domination I've seen from one team's guards over another in a long time. We tried every defense. Nothing worked. Their guards were just a whole lot better than us tonight."
Harris' total was the most points in the Mullins Center since St. Bonaventure guard Marques Green had 33 in 2004. The Mullins record is 35 by George Washington guard SirValient Brown in 2000.
"It was nice to see Anthony have the kind of game he had out there," Miami coach Frank Haith said. "He has not had those kind of numbers, but he's stayed with it and I'm proud of him."
LASME STRUGGLING - Senior big man Stephane Lasme's shooting struggles continued. The senior big man has now shot 10-for-29 in his last four games, a figure that stands out more because he rarely shoots from further than eight feet from the basket.
Asked if he was frustrated by Lasme's offensive production, Ford answered emphatically: "Very."
Lasme, who was a 70 percent free-throw shooter and UMass' preferred shooter on opponents' technical fouls as a sophomore, has struggled since then. He missed 5-of-7 Tuesday night.
STATS - The Minutemen, who had 30 turnovers in Thursday's win over Yale, had just 13 Tuesday.
The 16 points by Gary Forbes were his most since he had 20 against Jacksonville State Nov. 25.
NEXT UP - The Minutemen open Atlantic 10 play Saturday at La Salle. The start time for that game has been changed and is now 4 p.m. The Explorers are 6-6 and open their conference season tonight at Rhode Island. After starting the season 6-2, La Salle has dropped four straight.

MHERST -- Foul shots have been anything but "free" for the University of Massachusetts this season. Last night, they proved particularly costly.
The Minutemen clanged their way to just 13 of 25 from the line, a fact that contributed mightily to a 72-71 loss to Miami.
"If you're a player, step up and make free throws -- plain and simple," said exasperated UMass coach Travis Ford.
The foul performance from the line was not unusual for UMass, which came in shooting just 60.3 percent, by far the worst of the 14 teams in the Atlantic 10. The flaw had been largely masked by a soft schedule, which saw UMass enter the game 10-3, with nine of the wins coming against teams with losing records.
Last night, though, it came back to bite.
By no means was it the only factor in the hard-fought defeat. Every bit as important was UMass's inability to stop Miami's trio of guards, who got into the lane with impunity when they weren't torching the Minutemen from the perimeter (9 of 15 from 3-point land).
Anthony Harris, Miami's lone senior, was the best player on the court. He outdid his previous six games combined with a career-high 33 points, nailing 13 of 19 from the field, including 4 of 6 from downtown.
"He played the game taking what they gave him," said Hurricanes coach Frank Haith. "He kept us ahead."
Miami's Jack McClinton, a game-time decision coming off a knee injury, came off the bench to score 15 points. Denis Clemente, a cousin of baseball Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente, added 11. All three guards hit at least 50 percent from the field and 50 percent on 3-pointers.
"If you watched the game, their guards were scoring about every time I turned around," said Ford. "Their guards just dominated us. That's the biggest domination I've seen from one [set of] guards to another in a long time."
Still, UMass had its chances. The Minutemen rallied from an 8-point deficit with 6:45 left to get within 2 on two occasions, the latest at 70-68 with 1:21 left. After Miami's Dwayne Collins hit one of two to up the margin to 3, the Hurricanes controlled the offensive rebound. They ran the clock down, but Stephane Lasme (7 blocks) rejected a Harris runner in the lane.
The Minutemen then called a timeout with 25 seconds left. They swung the ball to James Life, who missed a tying 3-point bid. Lasme missed the putback, got another rebound, and got fouled with 6.1 seconds left. He missed both free throws, though, then fouled Brian Asbury over the back with five seconds remaining.
Asbury hit one of two to make it 72-68, and Gary Forbes put in a three at the buzzer to make it a 1-point game.
Forbes and Rashaun Freeman paced the Minutemen with 16 points apiece, though Freeman, after an explosive start, was almost completely shut down by Miami's fronting defense.
"We battled, but at the end they wanted it a little bit more," said Freeman.
Miami is now 8-7 in a peculiar season that has seen the Hurricanes beat Georgia Tech but somehow lose to both Buffalo and Binghamton.
UMass begins league play Saturday at La Salle after what should be some tough practices.
"We have not once this year had everybody play consistently," said Ford. "Guys think it's going to come easy. You've got to work at this game to get better."
