HILADELPHIA - A strong start to the second half overcame a rough first half as UMass rallied to defeat La Salle 79-71 on Saturday afternoon at Tom Gola Arena. Seniors Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.) and Stephane Lasme (Libreville, Gabon) each played in their 100th career games and showed why they are the anchor points of the Minutemen by combining for 35 points on the day. Lasme nearly recorded his second triple double of the season falling just a blocked shot shy.
UMass improves to 11-4 overall and 1-0 in the Atlantic 10, while La Salle falls to 6-8 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Freeman registered 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Lasme scored 17 points, hauled in 11 rebounds and swatted 9 shots to lead the Minutemen. Freeman hit 9-of-14 field goals in the game for his 78th career game in double-figures. Lasme fell just one blocked shot shy of his second triple-double of the season which would have made him the 26th player in NCAA history to record multiple triple doubles in one season. He finished the game hitting 7-of-9 field goals for his second-best shooting game of the year.
Senior shooting guard James Life (Fort Myers, Fla.) entered the game averaging 18.0 points in the prior three games but struggled early from the perimeter. He hit two key three pointers in the second half and finished with 16 points. Sophomore point guard Chris Lowe (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) scored 14 points and added a season-high six assists to round out the UMass scoring.
Darnell Harris led La Salle with 19 points - 12 of which were scored in the first half. Rodney Green scored 12 points, while Kimmani Barrett and Brian Grimes each scored 11 points.
After trailing at halftime, UMass climbed back into the game with a strong second half. A lay-up and subsequent free throw by Lasme tied the two squads at 39 each. La Salle took a two point lead on a lay-up by Reuben Guillandeux before a Freeman lay-up at the 16:35 mark that gave the Minutemen a 43-41 lead.
Halfway through the second half, Freeman was forced to sit after picking up his fourth foul, but the damage was done and Lasme was there to pick up the slack in the post. Lasme scored the 10 of his points in the second half.
With under five minutes to play, UMass held its largest lead of the game at that point 66-57 before La Salle went on a 8-to-3 run to pull within four. Redshirt junior Gary Forbes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a lay-up and then two free throws down the stretch to give UMass a 71-65 lead with 1:05 to play. Forbes finished the game with 12 points - 10 in the second half.
UMass got off to a shaky start falling behind 28-14 following a Harris three-pointer at the 7:53 mark in the first half. Travis Ford then called a 30-second timeout to settle down the Minutemen who responded with a 10-to-0 run to come within four.
Freeman and Lasme finished the frame doing the most damage with a combined 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting. La Salle, meanwhile, hit 12 of its first 14 shots before going silent. The Explorers took a 37-33 halftime lead after UMass climbed back into the game.
The Minutemen shot 29-for-62 from the field for the game, while the Explorers hit 25-for-56 from the floor. Free throw shooting down the stretch was key for UMass who hit 10 straight in the last minute of play despite shooting 17-of-27 for the game. UMass picked up its perimeter shooting in the second half overcoming a 1-for-12 performance hitting 3-of-9 deep shots.
UMass will next host back-to-back home games in the Mullins Center starting on Wednesday night when the Minutemen host George Washington at 7 p.m. They will then host Temple on Saturday, Jan. 13, which will be carried live on CSTV Syndication starting at Noon.
ashaun Freeman scored in double-figures for the 14th time in 15 games this season and in 78 of 100 career games at UMass with 18.
* Freeman had his seventh double-double of the season along with 11 rebounds. Its his 37th career double-double.
* Stephane Lasme had his sixth double-double of the season and 14th of his career with 17 points and 13 rebounds. It was his ninth game in double-figures and 29th overall in 100 career games.
* Lasme also had nine blocked shots coming up one short of his second career triple-double.
* Stephane Lasme and Rashaun Freeman each played their 100th career games at La Salle.
* James Life scored in double-figures for the fourth game in a row and 10th time this season with 16.
* Chris Lowe had his second game this season with 10 or more and fifth of his career with a career-high tying 14. He also handed out a season-best six assists.
* Gary Forbes also scored in double figures for the 11th time in 15 games this season with 12.
* UMass now has eight wins away from home this season (5-2 on the road and 3-0 neutral). It equals the most wins away from home since the 2000-01 season when they also won eight.
Ford On Free Throw Shooting In The Stretch
It's all about getting the right guys to line when you need them. I think our shooting at the end will give us confidence. James Life, Chris Lowe and Gary Forbes all hit key shots and Stephane hit his when we need him too.
Ford On The Play Of Chris Lowe
Chris Lowe and I have spent a lot of time talking. We discussed that his game was more about attitude, that we needed him to be a leader. We need him to be vocal and run our team. He did a better job of that tonight.
Stephane Lasme On Near Triple Double
I didn't know I was that close, but it really doesn't matter - only that we won - that matters the most.
Lasme On Post Play
The game plan going in the second half was to go to Rashaun and I. The guards did a great job tonight. It really opened our perimeter game.
Lasme On Playing With Four Fouls
You have to stay focused when you have four fouls and I think Rashaun and I were able to do that and avoid and silly fouls.
HILADELPHIA -- The weather -- a balmy 70 degrees -- was an upset in January, and for a while yesterday it looked as if La Salle might do the same to the University of Massachusetts in the Minutemen's first Atlantic 10 game of the season.
After a disjointed, difficult first half in which the green but determined Explorers took a 14-point lead, the Minutemen overtook La Salle in the first three minutes of the second half and never trailed again, winning, 79-71.
Center Rashaun Freeman led UMass with 18 points and added 11 rebounds, while forward Stephane Lasme just missed a triple-double with 17 points, 13 rebounds, and 9 blocks. La Salle guard Darnell Harris led all scorers with 19 points.
The win lifted UMass to 11-4 and a heady 8-2 on the road. La Salle (6-8) has lost six straight.
"We wanted it more than they did in the second half," said UMass point guard Chris Lowe, who notched 14 points and a game-high six assists. Lowe said that playing high-profile teams such as Kentucky and Pittsburgh on the road -- even though those games went into the books as losses -- has given the Minutemen confidence.
UMass played much of the game with Freeman and Lasme in foul trouble, and coach Travis Ford looked more relieved than elated afterward.
"To come back from 14 down, we dug down and found something," Ford said.
"Any John Giannini team is so well-coached," Ford added of his counterpart, who is slogging through a rebuilding year after losing two-time Atlantic 10 player of the year Steven Smith.
"They grind it out and play well," Ford said. "We gradually brought it back. I'm glad we were able to pull it out."
Giannini said the Explorers' youth stood out in even more stark contrast than usual against the Minutemen's depth and experience, noting Freeman's scoring prowess -- the fifth-year senior just passed Julius Erving and Marcus Camby in UMass history -- and Lasme's defense.
"Lasme is as good a shot-blocker as there is in the country," Giannini said. "They're good for a reason and we're struggling for a reason. That's just where our two programs are at."
La Salle came out trying to end its recent pattern of falling behind quickly. The Explorers initially looked as if they had reversed that trend, working hard to find high-percentage shots and making the Minutemen sweat for theirs.
The Minutemen took a 6-4 lead in the first four minutes but fell behind, 28-14, over the next 10 minutes. Ford shuffled the deck repeatedly but couldn't find the right combination, and guard James Life, a 45 percent 3-point shooter, went cold from his usual comfort zone, going 1 for 6 from the arc.
UMass began to recoup with 6:45 left in the half when La Salle guard Ruben Guillandeaux wrapped his arms around Lasme, who was charging toward the basket for what should have been an uncontested layup after a La Salle turnover. Lasme missed the free-throw granted for the intentional foul, but Freeman's quick score inside began a 10-0 run and the Minutemen crept up to trail, 37-33, at the half.
Life made his first 3-pointer in the second half and Freeman put UMass ahead for good, 43-41, with a little more than 17 minutes left.
La Salle kept pushing and cut the margin to 3 at the two-minute mark. Although the Minutemen were ragged at the free throw line, shooting 63 percent, they did sink their last 11 to seal the win.
"We've made a big deal about staying intense for the whole game," said Lasme.
Lasme's nine blocks brought his career total to 305 and made him only the second player in UMass history besides Camby to surpass 300. Camby's school-record 336 appears reachable.
UMass guard Tiki Mayben, who usually splits time at the point with Lowe, did not play for the first time this season. Ford said it was a coach's decision and did not elaborate.
HILADELPHIA - With 10 minutes, 37 seconds remaining in the first half and the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team down by eight points, coach Travis Ford turned to his left and sent senior big man Stephane Lasme back into the game.
Lasme had two fouls and to that point was scoreless with no blocks, a rebound and three turnovers. But instead of playing timidly - as foul-plagued players often do - Lasme delivered his best game in weeks and helped the UMass overcome an early 14-point deficit to defeat La Salle 79-71 Saturday at Tom Gola Arena.
Lasme played the last several minutes of the game needing one block for his second triple-double of the season. But with the Explorers (6-8, 0-2 Atlantic 10) forced to launch 3-pointers, Lasme never got a chance to block another shot and settled for 17 points, 13 rebounds and nine blocks. He finished with four fouls.
"He needs to play when he has two fouls," Ford said. "We've studied it. When he gets two fouls early and sits out, the rest of the game is a wrap for him. I'm doing it just to keep him going. Luckily we survived it. I was a nervous wreck thinking he'd get his third."
Ford didn't convey that nervousness to Lasme.
"Coach asked to me focus and he said he was sure I wasn't going to get a third," Lasme said. "I just tried to go out there, do what I can do and play hard."
Rashaun Freeman, who struggled with foul trouble and eventually fouled out, had 18 points and 11 rebounds.
"Steph and Ray are our horses. We've got to ride them," Ford said. "We spent 90 percent of our time-outs on defense and the other 10 saying get it to our big guys. ... We leaned on two guys for rebounding and scoring points. That's who we are."
UMass (11-4, 1-0 Atlantic 10) returns home to host George Washington at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
After erasing most of La Salle's early 28-14 edge late in the first half, the Minutemen took the lead for good with a 12-4 run early in the second. But they couldn't quite put the Explorers away, and UMass was forced to take critical free throws in the second half. After a poor performance from the line cost the Minutemen in Tuesday's 72-71 loss to Miami, they made their last 11 free throws Saturday to seal the win.
James Life (16 points) made five and Chris Lowe (14) had four in that stretch. Gary Forbes, who had 10 of his 12 points in the final 12 minutes, made the other two.
"I hope that gives us confidence for the rest of the games because we didn't shoot them very well up to that point," said Ford, whose team was 6-for-16 Saturday until that point.
The Minutemen struggled early, while the Explorers made 12 of their first 14 shots to take a 28-14 lead. But La Salle missed their next nine.
Led by Freeman and Lasme, who was playing with two fouls, UMass battled back and cut its deficit to 37-33 at halftime.
Ford said he was happy to leave with a win.
"To come back from 14 down, we dug down and found something," Ford said. "I'm glad we were able to pull it out."

HILADELPHIA - Before scoring on a drive to the basket with 11 minutes, 16 seconds remaining, University of Massachusetts junior swingman Gary Forbes had two points, both on free throws, and had attempted just one shot.
But Forbes elevated his play by scoring 10 points in that final 11:16 as the Minutemen held off La Salle 79-71. La Salle twice cut the UMass lead to three points and both times Forbes responded by scoring.
"I think the last two games he's played really well. Tonight he was tremendous," UMass coach Travis Ford said. "He made some really big shots. He did some crazy things too, but he made some big shots and he's not afraid to take them."
"Coach Ford told me he wanted me to be aggressive. I put that on myself as well," Forbes said. "I have to do a little of everything."
300 CLUB - With his nine blocks, Stephane Lasme joined Marcus Camby as the only Minutemen to block more than 300 shots in their careers. Lasme now has 305 which leaves him 31 behind Camby.
MAYBEN SITS - Freshman point guard Tiki Mayben, who began the season as a starter, never checked into the game as Ford used Chris Lowe for 34 minutes and Forbes for the other six.
Ford said not playing the highly-touted freshman was "a coach's decision" and declined to elaborate further.
PHINALLY - UMass entered the game with just one win in its last 12 games in Philadelphia and had lost five of the last six meetings against La Salle.
FREEMAN MILESTONE - Rashaun Freeman became the ninth player in UMass history to score 1,500 career points and moved past Mike Pyatt (1,503) into the No. 8 spot on the Minutemen's career scoring list. Freeman's 18 points gave him 1,511 for his career. Next up is Harper Williams with 1,524.
HARRIS, HARRIS and HARRIS - After watching Anthony Harris of Miami score 33 points against them Tuesday, the Minutemen looked like they were in for trouble when Darnell Harris of La Salle had 12 in the first half Saturday . But UMass contained him for most of the second half and Harris finished with 19.
Minuteman freshman Ricky Harris didn't score in seven minutes played Saturday.
