MHERST - At the end of practice Tuesday, University of Massachusetts coach Travis Ford and freshman point guard Tiki Mayben joked back and forth before the players split off to practice free throws individually in preparation for tonight's game at 7 against George Washington at the Mullins Center.
Mayben's state of mind and role on the team has been a much-speculated-on topic since Ford didn't play him at all in Saturday's 79-71 win at La Salle.
Mayben knows some people still think of him as the volatile teenager who had trouble handling adversity when he younger. Mayben said he's matured since those days and is still on board.
"Learning is the main thing right now," Mayben said. "I'm a competitor and I always feel like I should be out there, but certain situations call for certain people to be on the court. Me getting frustrated will just take away from the team and we don't need that.
"All I can do is try to step my defense up and try to do what I do best," Mayben added. "It's just a matter of producing when I get in there. If I'm producing, there's nothing he can do but play me."
After sitting out last year as an academic nonqualifier, Mayben began this season as the Minutemen's starting point guard and has had some stretches when he looked impressive. He actually leads the Atlantic 10 with 4.79 assists per game. But he's been erratic at other times, leading Ford to use steady sophomore Chris Lowe for more minutes.
Ford said he still envisions Mayben making an impact.
"He had a tremendous practice" Tuesday, Ford said. "He needs to continue to improve shooting, free throws, cutting down on turnovers. He needs to really concentrate on getting better."
Ford hasn't used Lowe and Mayben together as much as he anticipated, but said that tonight might be a good time to do that more.
"As much as GW likes to press and trap, having two ball handlers on the court might not be a bad idea at times," Ford said.
A year ago UMass had a far thinner team and tried to slow the tempo a little against George Washington, which was ranked No. 7 when they played Feb. 15. It almost worked, but the Colonials took advantage of 29 UMass turnovers and escaped with a 69-66 win in Washington D.C.
This year the Minutemen (11-4, 1-0 Atlantic 10) are deeper and Ford said UMass will try to run with George Washington.
"We know they're going to press us and trap us at every opportunity. That's what we want," Ford said. "We want to play fast. We want to speed the game up more. We can't play chaotic and out of control, but we want them to trap us and try to push the game and we'll see what happens."
The Colonials (10-3, 1-0 A-10) lost four of five starters from last year's top-10 squad, but the replacements have done a good job stepping in for them.
Maureece Rice leads George Washington with 15.8 points per game. Senior point guard Carl Elliott leads the Atlantic 10 with 40 steals while averaging 12.2 points per game.
"People think I'm crazy, but this George Washington team is as good as last year's team," Ford said. "Their strengths are a little different, but they play the same. They have not missed a beat."
Colonials coach Karl Hobbs downplayed his squad and praised the Minutemen.
"I'm pretty pleased to just have three losses at this juncture. We still have a long way to go. We're still evolving. We've still trying to find a way to put two halves together. Hopefully we'll start to do that and we'll start to do that pretty soon," Hobbs said.
"I think as a combo, UMass has the best two big guys (Rashaun Freeman and Stephane Lasme) in the league and (James) Life is probably the best two-guard in the league as far as statistics and the way he's playing right now," Hobbs added. "We're going to have to try to eliminate their big guys from as many touches as we can. I think we're going to have to score 75 to 80 points to win."

MHERST, Mass. - Senior forward Stephane Lasme (Libreville, Gabon) became the 23rd player in NCAA history to post multiple triple-double performances in one season as he scored 23 points, hauled in 15 rebounds and blocked 11 shots to lead UMass to a 91-84 win over Atlantic 10 rival George Washington in the Mullins Center on Wednesday night. The Minutemen led by as many as 17 points in the second half before the Colonials went on a 20-to-4 run to pull back into the game.
The Minutemen improve to 12-4 overall, 2-0 in the Atlantic 10, while George Washington falls to 10-4 overall, 1-1 in the league. The win snapped a three-game win streak for the Colonials.
Lasme was UMass' go-to man in the second half as he had 14 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 blocked shots in the frame. Senior Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.) scored 21 points, while Gary Forbes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 16 and James Life (Fort Myers, Fla.) scored 11 to round out the box score. Forbes hit 10-for-12 from the free throw line.
Along with just becoming the 23rd player in NCAA history to post multiple triple-doubles in one season, he also became the first player in UMass history to accomplish the feat. Lasme joins several great names in NCAA and NBA history such as Shaquille O'Neal, David Robinson, Jason Kidd, and Penny Hardaway.
tephane Lasme became the 23rd player in NCAA history to record two triple-doubles in the same season. Overall, it was the 26th time it occurred overall. He had 23 points, 15 rebounds and 11 blocks. His other was against St. Francis on Nov. 22, 2006 when he had 19 points, 10 rebounds and 11 blocks. That list includes the likes of all-time basketball legends: David Robinson (Navy in 1986), Shaquille O'Neal (LSU in 1990 and 1992), Jason Kidd (California in 1994) and Anfernee Hardaway (Memphis in 1993). Most recently, Shawn James had two triple-doubles at Northeastern last season as well as in 2005.. Others of note on the list are: Andre Iguodala (Arizona in 2004), Luc Longley (New Mexico in 1992), Kevin Roberson (Vermont in 1990 and 1992), Sharone Wright (Clemson in 1993), Roy Rogers (Alabama in 1996), Adonal Foyle (Colgate in 1997), Jerome James (Florida A&M in 1997), David Harrison (Colorado in 2003).
Note: This list includes players that had the third stat in assists, steals or blocks. Blocked shots did not become an official NCAA stat until 1986.
* Only seven players have more than two triple-doubles in a season led by Michael Anderson at Drexel in 1986 and Jason Kidd at Cal in 1994, who each had four in the season.
* Stephane Lasme had 11 blocked shots as he continued to add to his second-all-time total (316). His mark is 85 this season is also the fifth-best single-season and the most for a senior. His 11 blocked shots tied his school-record for blocked shots in a game previously done vs. St. Francis.
* Rashaun Freeman reached double-figures for the 79th time in 101 career games and 15th time in 16 games this season. He had 11 points in the first 14 minutes and finished with 21. It was his sixth game with 20 or more this season and 22nd of his career.
* Rashaun Freeman moved to a tie for seventh on the all-time UMass career rebounding list with seven on Wednesday. With (854) he tied Harper Williams (854).
* Etienne Brower scored eight points in the first 5:30 to equal his season-high in that limited time frame. That was all he scored in the game.
* Chris Lowe has a season-best seven assists.
* Gary Forbes scored in double-figures for the third game in a row and 12th time this season with 16 points. He also made a career-high 10-of-12 from the foul line. Both numbers are new career-highs.
* James Life also cracked the double-figure mark for the fifth game in a row and 11th time in 16 games this season with 11.
* UMass ended GW's 18-game Atlantic-10 conference game win streak.
On the play at the Mullins Center:
"I've been concerned with the focus we've put on playing on the road that sometimes we forget you have to hold down the fort."
On the UMass turnovers:
"The turnovers, 22, weren't bad turnovers because most of the turnovers were good turnovers. Most of the turnovers were like walks. At least the ball was dead so they couldn't go the other way against us. Bad turnovers are when they can run to the other end and shoot layups and we had a couple of those but most of them were good. I don't think the turnovers have hurt us as much as they could have."
On the play of Stephane Lasme:
"The biggest challenge for Stephane Lasme is consistency. His mentally getting ready for every game. He and I are very close and I told him sometimes I think I want more for him than he does and I know his capabilities and his whole career he's kind of taken this step back approach. It's good to have two bookends [with Freeman and Lasme]. What's amazing is that there playing like this and everyone knows it but they're still finding ways to score."
George Washington Head Coach Karl Hobbs:
On the play of UMass:
"The difference in the game was that they had a 5th year guy, [Rashaun] Freeman, and a 4th year guy, [Stephane] Lasme, and when you look at the stats I think the veterans took over the basketball game. That's what veterans do. They took advantage of a guy, [Dogun Akingbade] that has never played significant minutes."
On Stephane Lasme and Rashaun Freeman:
"I take my hat off to UMass. They had veteran guys that played like veteran guys do. Whenever the game was on the line, the two big guys [Rashaun Freeman and Stephane Lasme] made the plays and they converted and scored."
"[Stephane Lasme] took away so many layups and that's what makes him a terrific player in this league. He changes games defensively alone. If we get ten layups, normally we'll convert about six of them. With him playing, we'll convert about two and that's a different of eight to ten points."
UMass Forward Rashaun Freeman:
On the play of George Washington:
"We knew no matter how big of a lead we had that they were the type of team to come back at any time. We were fully aware of what they were capable of. When they went on that spurt and were only down one, we knew what kind of game it would be and they didn't sneak up on us."
On the significance of the win for UMass:
"The type of team we have, we're going to win a lot of games and this type of game gives us confidence going into the Atlantic 10 schedule because I think the whole rest of the A10 was looking at this game to see who would win it. [George Washington] has held down this league for a few years now so this was a quality win."
On the play of the UMass team:
"Me and Stephane played well but we have to play this well for our team to be afloat. But when Gary and Tiki and everybody start to bring their games up and play well, then we're going to be the team that everyone thinks we can be."
UMass Forward Stephane Lasme:
On his play:
"I'm happy with the way I played. I've just tried to focus on not getting stupid fouls and turnovers. I'm proud of the way I played. Coach Ford has given me a lot of confidence in my game and I'm just happy with where I'm at and that I can help the team win a couple games."
MHERST - With 50 seconds left in Wednesday night's game, Stephane Lasme clinched a win by the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team and his place in history all in one motion.
With George Washington trailing by five, guard Maureece Rice drove the left baseline past Chris Lowe. Lasme was waiting for Rice and swatted the shot away to reach his second triple-double of the season. He is the 23rd player in NCAA history to have more than one triple-double in a single season.
Ten seconds later Lasme knocked down two free throws as the Minutemen hung on to win 91-84 in a wild game at the Mullins Center. Lasme finished with 23 points, 15 rebounds and tied his school record with 11 blocks.
"I need to come in with high energy and be a vocal leader on the floor," Lasme said. "I'm just trying to focus on not getting stupid fouls and playing with a high level of energy. ... I'm proud of the way I played."
After the Minutemen's 72-71 loss to Miami two games ago, UMass coach Travis Ford was surly, angry at everybody including Lasme.
Ford said he was proud of Lasme's effort Wednesday, but challenged him to build off his recent success.
"The biggest challenge for Steph is consistency. I told him that sometimes I think I want it more for him than he does because I know his capabilities," Ford said. "He and Rashaun (Freeman) have continued to have success even though everyone knows we're going to them."
George Washington coach Karl Hobbs tipped his hat to the pair.
"Whenever the game was on the line their two veteran big guys converted," Hobbs said. "Lasme took away so many layups. He changes games defensively alone."
UMass (12-4, 2-0 Atlantic 10) won by playing the up-and-down pace that George Washington has dominated the conference with in recent years.
The Minutemen led by 17 at 56-39 with 15 minutes, 21 seconds remaining, but the Colonials scored 13 of the next 15 points to get back in the game. On three occasions George Washington got within one, but the Minutemen answered on the ensuing possession each time to keep control of the game. The Colonials (10-4, 1-1 A-10) were led by Rice, who scored 30 points.

As in Saturday's 79-71 win over La Salle, UMass was sharp from the free-throw line down the stretch and made 10 of 12 in the final 1:17. Lasme, who had struggled from the line lately, made nine of 12.
"I'm happy I made so many," Lasme said. "Coach Ford made us shoot 100 every night for the past week."
Freeman scored 21 points, while Gary Forbes continued his strong second-half play with 12 of his 16 points after intermission. James Life added 11.
The 91 points were the most UMass has scored in a conference game at the Mullins Center since March 1994.
The Minutemen stay at home and host Temple at noon Saturday.
The loss snapped George Washington's 18-game Atlantic 10 regular-season win streak. Ford was almost jovial after the game.
"I'm excited about the win. GW is a very good basketball team. I'm excited that our team played much better than we had been," Ford said. "This was one game and we have a lot more to go."
MHERST - With his 23-point, 15-rebound, 11-block effort, University of Massachusetts senior big man Stephane Lasme became just the 23rd player in NCAA history to record two triple-doubles in the same season.
Lasme recorded his first on Nov. 22 against St. Francis. If he had one more block against La Salle Saturday, Lasme would have had two straight triple-doubles. Five players have done it three or more times in a season.
The company Lasme joined is impressive as NBA stars Shaquille O'Neal, Jason Kidd and David Robinson are in the elite club. Three players have had two triple-doubles in two separate seasons.
Shawn James had two triple-doubles last season for Northeastern before transferring to Duquesne where he's sitting out this season.
Lasme is the first player to have two in a career as well as a season at UMass.
Boston College coach Al Skinner had the only other one against St. Peter's in 1973.
Lasme's 11 blocked shots tied his own school record that he set against St. Francis.
ACCIDENTAL SUCCESS - Etienne Brower wasn't supposed to start the game. UMass coach Travis Ford had elected to replace him in the starting lineup with Gary Forbes, but director of basketball operations James Altman wrote Brower into the scorebook and the Minutemen were forced to start him to avoid a technical foul.
The move paid off as Brower scored all of his career-high eight points in the first half.
"The person who is happiest we won was James Altman. He was praying we'd win," Ford said. "I guess I should listen to him more. Etienne played tremendous."
With 30 seconds left, Brower landed on his right ankle and had to be helped off the court. He will be re-evaluated today.
CAREER REBOUNDS - With his seven rebounds, UMass senior big man Rashaun Freeman now has 854 in his career, moving into a tie with Harper Williams at No. 7 on the school's career list. Freeman is just three points behind Williams, who is also No. 7 on the career scoring list (1,534).
NEXT UP - The Minutemen host Temple Saturday. The starting time for the game has been moved several times, and is now set for noon. The Owls dropped their fourth straight game Wednesday, falling to Saint Joseph's 80-67 at home.
TIKI RETURNS - After sitting out the Minutemen's 79-71 win over La Salle Saturday, freshman point guard Tiki Mayben returned and played 19 minutes before fouling out. He had six assists and four turnovers to go with three points.
Ford used Mayben and sophomore point guard Chris Lowe together for 12 minutes late in the game.
"We needed ball handling and defense," Ford said. "Tiki has come as far as anyone on defense. He's actually a guy that I'll put in for defense."
AUERBACH STRIPE - The Colonials each have one red stripe on the right side of their shorts in honor of George Washington alumnus Red Auerbach, who died shortly before the season started.

hree future University of Massachusetts players will be in action this weekend during the Spalding Hoophall Classic in Blake Arena at Springfield College.
Marcus Matthews, a 6-foot-2 combo guard from New York, will lead his Bishop Loughlin squad against Commerce at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
Sunday's action showcases prep and private schools with teams including two players committed to UMass and a third, Romaric Lasme, who is expected eventually to be a Minuteman.
Winchendon, which is coached by former UMass player Mike Byrnes, faces Harmony Community School of Cincinnati at noon Sunday. Winchendon features Papa Ousmane Lo, a 6-foot-9 big man from Senegal, who signed to play at UMass. He plays alongside Lasme, the brother of Minuteman big man Stephane Lasme, who will remain at Winchendon for another year and is expected to attend UMass.
At 1:45 p.m., Northfield Mount Hermon faces Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va. Matt Glass, a 6-foot-7 wing headed to UMass, is one of a handful of Division I-bound players on the Northfield Mount Hermon roster. He's expected to add an outside shooter to the Minutemen next year.

Cheyenne Moore takes a swat at Gary Forbes' drive in the lane.

Etienne Brower looks for a teammate as Damian Hollis falls for the up-fake.
MHERST - As a freshman, Stephane Lasme came to the University of Massachusetts about as raw and unpolished as any big man in Division 1. As a senior, the work in progress has come so far he is a dominant force.
Last night, Lasme carried the Minutemen on his broad shoulders to a thrilling 91-84 victory over a scrappy George Washington team at the Mullins Center. Lasme scored a team-high 23 points, grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds, and tied his own school record in blocked shots with 11. He thus recorded his second triple-double of the season, and only the third in UMass history.
In so doing, Lasme became only the 23d player in NCAA history to record more than one triple-double in a season. That list includes the likes of David Robinson, Shaquille O'Neal, Jason Kidd, and Anfernee Hardaway.
Lasme's effort came off a near miss in a 17-point, 13-rebound, 9-block effort last Saturday against La Salle.
"I'm happy I can finally help my team win a couple games," said Lasme, who hails from the African nation of Gabon.
"Oh boy, he changes games just defensively alone," said GW coach Karl Hobbs, who saw his team lose a regular-season Atlantic 10 game for the first time after 18 victories.
To be sure, Lasme needed help, and got it in perhaps the best effort of the year for UMass (12-4, 2-0). Rashaun Freeman pumped in 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting, and Gary Forbes added 16 -- several of them in key situations late in the game when UMass had to withstand a charge from the Colonials (10-4, 1-1).
GW got brilliant play from guards Maureece Rice ( career-high 30 points) and Carl Elliott (19), who exploited UMass's backcourt defense, a soft spot for much of the season.
The Colonials trailed throughout, and fell behind by as many as 17 early in the second half. They were relentless, though, continuing to press and trap, and climbed to as close as a point on two occasions, the latest at the 4:30 mark when Elliott's jumper pulled them within 72-71.
UMass proved resilient. Freeman scored a couple of quick hoops to increase the lead to 5. GW kept coming, and got within 2, 81-79, on a 3-pointer by Rice with 1:21 left.
Three free throws by Forbes made it 84-79. Lasme came up with a couple of big, late blocks and four straight free throws to prevent the Colonials from catching up.
UMass coach Travis Ford, who had described himself as very disappointed with Lasme's effort two games ago in a loss to Miami, was glowing this time.
"The biggest challenge for Stephane is consistency, mentally getting ready every game," said Ford. "Sometimes I think I want it more for him than he does. I know his capabilities."
Ten of UMass's other 11 victories had come against teams with losing records. What's more, GW has often proved a stumbling block for the Minutemen, who have seldom been able to light the victory cigar against the alma mater of Red Auerbach.
Even in UMass's glory days, the Colonials were a thorn in their side. In one stretch between February 1994 and February 1996, the Minutemen went 64-4 against everyone else, and 0-4 against the Colonials. Twice, GW knocked off UMass when it was ranked No. 1.
But last night the Colonials proved a yardstick, and the Minutemen, to the delight of their coach, were able to measure up.
"I'm just excited because we won against a good basketball team," Ford said.
MHERST - UMass senior forward Stephane Lasme recorded 11 blocks last night against George Washington, but one stands out.
With GW staging a late comeback, Cheyenne Moore appeared to have an open look at a 3-pointer from the wing with 22 seconds left that would have brought the Colonials within two. But, as he did all night, Lasme managed to get a hand on the shot.
In the aftermath of the block, Lasme was fouled and he knocked down both free throws, allowing UMass to escape with a 91-84 win.
Lasme was a force all night, recording his second triple-double of the season with 23 points and 15 rebounds to go along with the 11 rejections. Lasme’s frontcourt mate, senior forward Rashaun Freeman, did his part with 21 points and seven rebounds.
“What’s amazing is that they’re doing this and everybody knows that we’re going to them,” UMass coach Travis Ford said. “These guys continue to figure out how to score and that’s a tribute to those two.”
Junior Gary Forbes also stepped up down the stretch for UMass (12-4, 2-0 Atlantic 10) recording 12 of his 16 points in the second half.
Lasme and Freeman have carried UMass all season, but Freeman said other players must contribute.
“Me and Stephane played well, but we have to play this well for our team to stay afloat,” Freeman said. “And then when Gary and Tiki (Mayben) and those guys start to bring their games up we’re going to be the team that everybody thinks we can be.”
Forbes and Lasme were especially effective at the free throw line, an area from which the Minutemen have struggled, combining to make 19-of-24 attempts.
It didn’t appear that any late free throws would be necessary when James Life (11 points) drilled a 3-pointer to give UMass a 56-39 lead with 15:25 left. But GW (10-4, 1-1) responded with a 20-4 run to narrow the gap to 60-59.
The Colonials comeback was led by their backcourt of Maureece Rice (30 points) and Carl Elliot (19).
The game remained tight down the wire, but the combination of the Minutemen making their foul shots (13-of-16 in the last 5:13) and Lasme’s defensive presence kept GW from drawing even.
Freeman expects the play of Lasme, who became the 23rd player in NCAA history to record two triple-doubles in the same season, to force opponents to change their approach to defending UMass.
“The game plan has been to just pack it in on Rashaun Freeman and win the game,” Freeman said. “I think that’s nonexistent now. I think they’re going to have to stop me and Steph and a couple of other players to beat us.”
