Minutemen will try to slow Temple guard
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/13/2007

AMHERST - Anthony Harris. Maureece Rice. Dionte Christmas?

The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team has given up at least 30 points to opposing guards in two of its last three games. Christmas, the Atlantic 10's second-leading scorer, comes to town Saturday as Temple and the Minutemen meet at noon at the Mullins Center.

Harris scored 33 for Miami Jan. 2 and Rice had 30 for George Washington Wednesday. The Minutemen (12-4, 2-0 Atlantic 10) hope to improve their perimeter defense against the Owls.

"Fifty of 69 points come from the guards," UMass coach Travis Ford said. "We've challenged our guards to play better than they have. Temple's guards are extremely talented. We have our hands full. We have to be better than we've been all season long."

The Minutemen guards said they have accepted the challenge.

"We have to slow down their guards, their perimeter," junior Gary Forbes said. "We using that as motivation."

"They have three really good guards," sophomore point guard Chris Lowe said. "It'll be a real challenge for our wing players to step up defensively and try to shut down their scoring guards. We haven't shown we can do that for a whole game."

Christmas leads the Owls with 19 points per game in their four-guard offense. Dustin Salisbery, who has hurt the Minutemen in the past, averages 16.6 points. Mark Tyndale, who has been back for eight games after being academically ineligible for the first six, averages 13.9 points.

Dion Dacons at 6-foot-6 is the only inside starter for Temple. He leads the team with 7.5 rebounds.

Good guards are about the only similarity between this year's team and recent editions of the Owls. For the first time in 25 years it won't be John Chaney on the Temple sideline as the Hall of Famer retired after last season and was replaced by former Pennsylvania coach Fran Dunphy.

Gone with Chaney is the Owls' famed matchup zone as Temple is playing a more traditional style now.

Lowe said he won't miss that defense.

"It's a whole new style of play for them this year. They're not playing the zone. They're not slowing the ball down. I'm glad they're not in that zone," Lowe said. "I played good against it the first time and horrible the second time. I'm glad its over with. They're still a good team. We have to be ready."

Temple (6-8, 0-2 A-10) arrives on a four-game losing streak with losses to Villanova, Duke, Xavier and Saint Joseph's.

"They're coming in here hungry. That's a dangerous place to be," Ford said. "Defensively they're different, but just as feisty and scrappy. They create a lot of turnovers."

NOTES: Ford said the Minutemen will likely be without junior forward Etienne Brower, who reinjured his right ankle in the final minute of Wednesday's win over George Washington.

However, Ford did not rule Brower out entirely. "We'll get him up Saturday morning and see what he can do, but it looks doubtful," Ford said.

The start time on the game tickets says 7 p.m., the scheduled tip-off. But the game has been moved to noon to accommodate the CSTV syndication package, which currently does not have a New England affiliate.

Former UMass walk-on Dwayne Killings, a standout player at Amherst Regional, will be on the Temple bench as the assistant director of basketball operations.

Huge Second Half Gives UMass 88-77 Win Over Temple
Freeman and Lasme combine for 42 points
From UMass Athletics, 1/13/2007

AMHERST, Mass. - A huge second half propelled UMass past Atlantic 10 rival Temple, 88-77 on Saturday afternoon in the Mullins Center. The Minutemen had four players in double-figures led by senior center Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.) and senior forward Stephane Lasme (Libreville, Gabon) who combined for 42 points. After Temple led at halftime, UMass used a 23-to-10 run during the second half and led by as many as 17 points.

With the win UMass improves to 13-4 overall and 3-0 in the A-10, while Temple falls to 6-9 overall and 0-3 in the league. The win total for the Minutemen equals all of last season (13-15 overall) which was Travis Ford's first at UMass. It also made UMass 3-0 in the league for the first time since the 1997-98 season when the Minutemen started 8-0.

Freeman and Lasme each scored 21 points and pulled down 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively, to lead the Minutemen. Lasme had a monster second half with 17 points, six rebounds and six blocked shots.

Junior Gary Forbes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 18 points, posted seven rebounds and handed out four assists, while senior James Life (Fort Myers, Fla.) scored 16 points and handed out four assists as well. Point guard Chris Lowe (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) rounded out the day with nine points and six assists to just two turnovers.

* The Minutemen are 3-0 in the Atlantic 10 for the first time since 1997-98 when they started 8-0 in the league.

* UMass scored its most points ever against a Temple in a regulation game and the second-most ever in any game with the 88. They scored 92 in a 98-92 double-overtime loss at Temple in 2004.

* Rashaun Freeman scored in double-figures for the 16th time in 17 games this season and 80th in 102 career games. He had 12 in the first half and finished with 21.

* Rashaun Freeman had his seventh game with 20 or more points this season and 23rd of his career.

* Rashaun Freeman had his eighth double-of the season and 38th of his career.

* Freeman moved to seventh on UMass' all-time scoring list. He passed Harper Williams (1,534). He now has 1553. Next on the list is Donald Russell (1558).

* Freeman also moved to sixth on the all-time rebounding list. He passed Tyrone Weeks (858). He now has 864. Next on the list is Jim Town (879).

* James Life reached double-figures for the sixth game in a row with 16. He has 12 games with 10 or more this season and 27 in his UMass career. Life, who was second in the A-10 in 3-pointers made per game coming in (2.75 per game) made four in the game. Life is scoring 16.1 points per game over the last six games.

* Stephane Lasme had his eighth double-double of the year and 16th of his career with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

* Stephane Lasme scored in double-figures for the fourth game in a row, 11th time this season and 31st time in his career.

* After picking up three first-half fouls and being limited for just four points, four rebounds and zero blocks, Stephane Lasme took over in the second half. In the final 20 minutes, he had 17 points, 7 rebounds and 6 blocks. He finished with 21 points, 11 rebounds and those 6 second-half blocks.

* It's the fourth time this year UMass has two players with double-doubles in the same game, Freeman and Lasme.

* Gary Forbes, coming off the bench for the fifth game in a row, scored in double-figures for the 13th time this season and 37th in his career with 18.

* Forbes made a career-high five 3-pointers in the win. His previous high was four against Florida State in 2005 while he was at Virginia.

* Brandon Thomas drew his first start of the year at small forward.

UMass Head Coach Travis Ford on the game:
"I wasn't happy with the defensive effort in the first half, we scored enough points, just not enough defense. We went on a stretch in the second half that broke the lead to 17 points, that was probably the best stretch of basketball we've played since I've been here. I was very excited, it was fun to watch, it was fun to coach. We were playing defense, running, making threes, we were posting and duinking, we were doing a little bit of everything. That gave us enough of a cushion against a team that was very hyped to play this game today."

Ford on Lasme in the second half:
"I was a little worried because sometimes he doesn't play as well when he has to sit seven or eight minutes in the first half. At halftime I was a little bit concerned. He went out and got 21 and 11. 21 and 11 is about what I expected tonight because we are much bigger and stronger. I didn't want to start taking them for granted because they have special basketball players, but we did what we were supposed to do."

Gary Forbes on feeling more comfortable with his role:
"I'm out there just playing, whether I'm the 6th man or starting. I feel comfortable playing, I'm getting a feel for the game and letting it come to me, taking shots that I can make."

Forbes on how coming off the bench has helped his game:
"It's a motivational thing for me. Everyone wants to star, when I come off the bench I feel like I have something to prove out there. Also, I get to see where spots are opening on the floor that I can pick and choose from allowing me to play my game."

Freeman on the teams better play in the second half:
"We responded to what coach Ford said at half, we felt that they were scoring too freely. We wanted to get some key stops and take control of the game. I felt that we had good energy the first few minutes and took the lead immediately. That gave us confidence, and we had some key stops that gave us control of the game."

Freeman on foul shooting:
"I think the key to our foul shooting is making them early. When we miss a couple to start it's harder to overcome. You start thinking that you have the hit the next two. The second half we just went out there and played and that led to us shooting foul shots better."

Temple Coach Fran Dunphy on whether or not he considered sending the Minutemen to the line more because of the poor free throw shooting:
"We're not the deepest group and we didn't foul too much in the second half. I thought their perimeter jump shooting was terrific in the second half. Forbes, Life and Lowe all made perimeter jumps shots that really hurt us. We were hoping they wouldn't shoot it quite as well. That's a tough combination of inside play with Lasme and Freeman with the perimeter guys stepping up."

3-balls fall for UMass
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/15/2007

AMHERST - Even another bad free-throw shooting performance wasn't enough to derail Saturday's effort by the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team.

The Minutemen made enough 3-pointers to make up for all the missed 1-pointers as they erased a five-point halftime deficit and beat Temple 88-77 at the Mullins Center.

Except for the free-throw shooting, the Minutemen played liked they hoped to at the beginning of the season. Rashaun Freeman and Stephane Lasme dominated inside against an undersized Owl squad, while James Life and Gary Forbes knocked down threes. UMass had 22 assists on 32 baskets.

"We're at our best when we're passing the ball," UMass coach Travis Ford said. "Everybody was kind of doing what I wanted them to do. ... Everybody did what they were supposed to do."

Freeman and Lasme each scored 21 points. Lasme, who played just 28 minutes after picking up three first-half fouls, returned to dominate in the second half and finished with 11 rebounds and six blocked shots.

Freeman added 10 boards as UMass outrebounded Temple 43-24.

"The game plan was just for us to go hard to the offensive glass," Lasme said. "We just did what we were supposed to do."

Ford added, "That's what I expected tonight because we were much bigger than they were. I don't want to start taking them for granted. They're special basketball players, but that's what they should have done tonight."

The Minutemen shot 11-for-20 from 3-point range. Forbes was particularly sharp making five-of-seven attempts as part of his 18 points.

James Life started the barrage by making three of his four 3-pointers in the first half, including two from well beyond NBA distance. Even Chris Lowe, who often struggles shooting from the outside made two of three 3-pointers to finish with nine points and six assists.

"That's a tough combination with their inside guys and the perimeter guys stepping up," Temple coach Fran Dunphy said. "UMass has a very good basketball team. We did enough good things, but not long enough to play well."

Dionte Christmas led Temple (6-9, 0-3 Atlantic 10) with 23 points, while Mark Tyndale finished with 19.

The two teams play again on Feb. 11 in Philadelphia.

The Minutemen improved to 13-4 and matched last year's victory total with 13 regular-season games to play. UMass is 3-0 in the Atlantic 10 for the first time since 1997-98 and is the only undefeated team in the conference.

"We're happy to be 13-4 and 3-0," said Ford, whose team is at Xavier at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Free-throw troubles looked like they might negate an otherwise strong showing by UMass in the first half Saturday. The Minutemen opened a 12-point lead just under 12 minutes into the half, but they made just seven of 20 free throws before intermission (13-for-28 overall).

With Lasme on the bench with three fouls, Temple scored the next six points and eventually finished the half on a 19-7 run to take a 45-40 lead at the break.

Forbes found Freeman for an easy score inside right away to start the second half launching an 8-0 run that regained momentum for UMass. Lasme's return seemed to energize the Minutemen at both ends of the floor. They stretched the spurt to 20-7 and never trailed again, building the lead to 84-67 as the Owls looked powerless.

"That was probably the best stretch of basketball we've played since I've been here," Ford said. "It was fun to watch. We were running. We were playing defense. We were making threes. We were posting. We were dunking, We were doing a little bit of everything."

Freeman said Lasme's blocks energize the teams. "Every time Steph gets a blocks it's like a battery in our back," Freeman said. "Every time he does that it just boosts us up more."

"I had a lot of energy in the second half," Lasme said. "I saved a lot of energy because I didn't play that much, so I felt like I should use it to help my team."

It was the most points UMass has ever scored against Temple in a regulation game. The Minutemen even made 6-of-8 free throws in the second half, which helped Ford swallow his team's tough start at the line.

"We're a 75 percent free-throw shooting team," Ford said playfully. "We shot 75 percent in the second half. That's what we're standing by."

Minutemen atop Atlantic 10
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 1/15/2007

AMHERST - After some help from Rhode Island and Saint Louis Saturday, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team today is alone in first place in the Atlantic 10 at 3-0.

UMass entered the weekend as one of three undefeated teams along with Saint Joseph's and Xavier. But Rhode Island surprised the Hawks 86-81 in Philadelphia and the Billikens took advantage of Xavier playing its second road game in three days and knocked off the Musketeers 76-65.

The Minutemen (13-4 overall) will face a challenge at 7 p.m. Thursday when they face Xavier in Cincinnati. UMass coach Travis Ford has been impressed with the Musketeers (12-5, 2-1 A-10).

"They were unanimously considered the best team in our league as far as (preseason) voting was concerned as they should have been," said Ford, apparently forgetting that his own team got four first-place votes in the A-10 preseason poll.

"They're deeper than they were last year," Ford continued. "They have a point guard transfer from Oklahoma who is very good. I think you'll see two good basketball teams going against each other."

Senior big man Rashaun Freeman believes that the Minutemen are better prepared to go to the Cintas Center, which is generally considered one of the league's toughest venues for a visitor.

"We have more confidence on the road because we focused on that over the summer to get a mind-set to be a better team on the road," Freeman said. "We've played in some environments that will have us prepared for Xavier - Kentucky, Louisville and Pitt."

LASME HONORED - Adding a 21-point, 11-rebound, six-block game Saturday to his triple-double on Wednesday was enough to earn Stephane Lasme the Atlantic 10 player of the week award.

FORBES OFF THE BENCH - After getting back-to-back strong performances off the bench by junior Gary Forbes, Ford has elected to keep him there. Ford replaced injured forward Etienne Brower in the starting lineup with senior Brandon Thomas who did not score in 10 minutes of action.

Forbes responded with another strong game, scoring 18 points and grabbing seven rebounds. He made 5-of-7 3-pointers which helped prevent Temple from bottling up the middle against Freeman and Stephane Lasme.

"Whether I'm the sixth man, starting or whatever, I just feel comfortable playing and letting the game come to me," Forbes said.

Ford said, "I kind of like that role with him giving us a spark off the bench. He seems to be adapting to it. It may change, but it's just proof that if you work on your game and do a little extra, good things happen. He stayed in the gym after everyone else. He even came and got me to have a 3-point shooting contest."

Ford had no problem boasting about the result. "I won by a landslide," he said before admitting, "No, it was closer than you'd think."

MILESTONES - Freeman left Harper Williams behind him in two career categories. Freeman's 21 points gave him 1,553, which moved him past Williams (1,534) and within five points of No. 6 Donald Russell.

Freeman's 10 rebounds gave him 864, breaking a tie with Williams at No. 7 and moving him past Tyrone Weeks (858). Freeman is 15 behind No. 5 Jim Town (879).

It was Freeman's seventh game with at least 20 points this season and the 23rd of his career.

Lasme's six blocks brought his career total to 322, putting him 14 behind Marcus Camby on the UMass career leader list.

TWO REFEREES - The game was played with only two referees, Joe DeMayo and Joe Townsell, because the third official had travel problems that prevented him from arriving.

Lasme, UMass reject the Owls
By Shawn Pastor, for The Philadelphia Inquirer Staff Writer, 1/14/2007

AMHERST, Mass. - Midway through the first half, Temple sophomore Dionte Christmas walked into the huddle and shouted, "You've got to find Life!" He was talking about Massachusetts guard James Life, who had hit three three-pointers in helping his team grab a 26-16 lead.

The Owls found some life, as well as Life, shutting him down and rallying to take a 45-40 halftime lead. But they never came close to stopping UMass center Stephane Lasme, who dominated the second half in an 88-77 victory over Temple yesterday afternoon at the Mullins Center.

It was the fifth consecutive loss for the Owls (6-9, 0-3), and marked the first time they had lost their first three Atlantic Ten Conference games.

One thing is obvious in those three losses: Coach Fran Dunphy picked a bad year to join the league with a team lacking size and strength in the middle.

Traditionally known for its backcourt stars, the A-10 features several high-caliber big men this season.

Lasme just might be the best. The 6-foot-8 pogo stick had recorded a triple-double (23 points, 15 rebounds, 11 blocked shots) in his previous game, against George Washington.

Against the Owls, he committed three fouls in the first 10 minutes.

With Lasme on the bench, Temple turned a seven-point deficit into a five-point halftime lead. Christmas and teammates Dustin Salisbery and Mark Tyndale attacked the rim relentlessly, scoring baskets and drawing fouls. All three reached double figures in the first half.

Everything changed when Lasme returned. He altered Temple's first two field-goal attempts in the second half. Then he scored twice in the paint. The Minutemen (12-4, 2-0) opened with a 10-2 run and never trailed again.

"He was a rejector down there," Tyndale said after four of his shots were blocked by Lasme.

"That should be his name, The Rejector, because he was erasing everything we brought to him. The game plan was not to go to him. We didn't listen to the coach. We kept going at him, and he kept sending us the other way."

Defensively, the Owls tried to combat the Minutemen with a 2-3 zone, then a 1-3-1 zone. In addition to Lasme, UMass has another dangerous big man in 6-9 senior Rashaun Freeman. Both of them finished with 21 points. Freeman had 10 rebounds.

Lasme had 11.

In the second half alone, Lasme totaled 17 points, seven rebounds, and six blocked shots.

"That's what I expected from them," UMass coach Travis Ford said.

The Owls expected something better than their first five-game losing skid since the beginning of the 2002-03 campaign.

"This is a horrible feeling," Tyndale said. "And what's so crazy is we're a pretty good team, we're a very good team."

They're also a pretty small team, sometimes a very small team. And next on the schedule is St. Louis, featuring 6-10 NBA prospect Ian Vouyoukas.

"We are who we are," Dunphy said. "We just have to figure it out. We're not going to get any taller by next week."

Victory doesn't come freely for UMass
By Marty Dobrow, The Boston Globe Correspondent, 1/14/2007

AMHERST - We all have fears. Heights make some people quiver. Spiders give others the willies.

For the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team, the source of terror is obvious: the free throw line.

UMass entered yesterday's contest against Temple ranked 318th out of 336 Division 1 teams in free throw shooting, clanging away to the tune of 60.7 percent. In the first half against the Owls, the Minutemen outdid themselves, connecting on a woeful 7 of 20. As a result, heavily favored UMass went to the locker room trailing, 45-40.

So what happened when the guys in white returned?

They merely turned their attention to another line -- nailing six of their first seven 3-pointers. That, combined with another inside tour de force from Stephane Lasme (21 points, 11 rebounds, 6 blocks) and Rashaun Freeman (21-10-3), led to an 88-77 victory before a Mullins Center crowd of 6,212.

"Obviously we weren't shooting the free throws very well today, but the 3-point line saved us," said Gary Forbes, who went 5 of 7 from long range en route to 18 points.

James Life (4 of 7 from behind the arc, 16 points) and Chris Lowe (2 of 3, 9 points) also contributed to the 3-point ambush.

UMass was supercharged after halftime, quickly erasing the 5-point deficit and turning it into a 17-point lead.

"We went on a stretch that was probably the best stretch of basketball we've played since I've been here," said second-year coach Travis Ford. "I got very excited. It was fun to watch."

The once-storied rivalry now features two teams in very different places. With the win, UMass improved to 13-4, matching its victory total from last season. The Minutemen also are 3-0 in the Atlantic 10 for the first time since 1997-98.

In the first year of the post-John Chaney era, the Owls dropped their fifth straight to fall to 6-9, and 0-3 in the league for the first time since joining the A-10 in 1982-83. Coach Fran Dunphy starts a lineup of players ranging from 6 feet 4 inches to 6-6. That left the Owls at a major disadvantage inside. UMass enjoyed an overwhelming 43-24 rebounding edge, and Lasme provided his usual defensive dominance.

"He was a major difference, no question about it," said Dunphy. "He was terrific. We talked enough about not challenging him, and we repeatedly attempted to. He responded in kind."

Lasme was coming off his second triple-double of the season, against George Washington (23 points, 15 rebounds, 11 blocks). He might have had a third if not for first-half foul trouble that limited him to eight minutes.

Temple got a game-high 23 points from Dionte Christmas on 7-of-14 shooting, including 3 of 5 from behind the arc. Mark Tyndale added 19 points and Dustin Salisbery had 14, though neither shot a good percentage.

UMass now turns its attention to Thursday night's game at Xavier, the preseason favorite to win the A-10. Ford said the key will be staying focused, something his team has struggled with all season.

"If Gary Forbes stays focused all the time, and James Life stays focused all the time, and Steph and Ray and Brandon [Thomas] -- I go down the list -- then we're a pretty good basketball team," said Ford. "But that's been our challenge. We don't approach it like that always. We've done it lately, but it's always a new day with this basketball team."

As for the free throw woes, Ford put a creative spin on the Minutemen's 46.4 percent showing (13 of 28). "We're a 75 percent free throw shooting team," he said. "That's what we shot in the second half. That's what we're standing by."

Minutemen shoot down rival Temple
By Rich Thompson, The Boston Herald, 1/14/2007

AMHERST - UMass rolled over a traditional rival in a dry run toward its ultimate Atlantic 10 challenge.

The low post tandem of Rashaun Freeman and Stephane Lasme combined for 41 points, 21 rebounds and nine blocks to lift the Minutemen to an 88-77 victory over old nemesis Temple before a respectable winter break crowd of 6,212 yesterday at the Mullins Center.

UMass improved to 13-4, 3-0 in the A-10 and looks to remain unbeaten when it visits the defending champion - and preseason favorite - Xavier in Cincinnati on Thursday night.

“We are excited about the win. That is a very solid basketball team,” said UMass coach Travis Ford, whose Minutemen equaled their win total from last season.

“They (Xavier) were unanimously voted the best team in our league as they should have been. I know they are deeper than they were last year. It will be sold out and it’s on ESPN. That’s exciting and I think you’ll see two good basketball teams. But, it’s not make or break either way.”

UMass owned most of the significant stats and should have inflicted a thrashing well beyond the 11-point margin of victory. But the Achilles’ heel of this team was too obvious to ignore despite the Minutemen’s 43-24 advantage on the boards and 22-14 edge in assists.

The Minutemen hit 13-of-28 free throws for a paltry 46.4 percent. UMass shot better percentages from the field (51.6 percent) and behind the 3-point arc (55.0) than they did from the stripe. The Minutemen trailed Temple 45-40 at the break because they hit 7-of-20 from the line.

“I think the key for us is making free throws early because when you miss early it’s more of a hill to overcome,” said Freeman, who was 3-of-7 from the line.

Temple guards Dionte Christmas (23), Dustin Salisbery (14) and Mark Tyndale (19) got the better of the backcourt play. But the Minutemen troika of James Life (16), Gary Forbes (18) and Chris Lowe (nine) sufficiently matched the Owls from outside the 3-point line. UMass drained 11-of-20 behind the arc while the Owls hit 10-of-19.

UMass opened the second half with an 8-0 run and took a 48-45 lead when Lasme converted a 3-point play. The Owls kept pace until the midway point when the Minutemen started scoring from every man’s sweet spot on the floor.

Lasme started the key stretch with a free throw that inspired a chorus of mock cheers from the gathering.

Freeman hit consecutive layups and Forbes nailed a baseline trey that forced Temple coach Fran Dunphy to call time out.

The Owls scored a quick five, but UMass countered with an 11-2 run that made it 84-67 with 5:27 to play. Freeman and Lasme converted 3-point plays before Lowe crashed the house with a 23-footer from off the key.

“We went on a stretch in the second half where we really broke it out to 17 points,” said Ford. “It was probably the best stretch of basketball we’ve played since I’ve been here.

“I even got very excited over there. It was fun to watch because we were playing defense, we were running, we were making 3s, we were posting, we were dunking and there was a little bit of everything. That gave us a cushion against a team that was pretty hot tonight.”
