MHERST - Normal doesn't last long for the Duquesne men's basketball team.
Just when the Dukes seemed to be finding some routine, they got more tough news. Senior center Almany Thiero was hospitalized Friday with blood clots in his lungs and will miss Sunday's 2 p.m. game against the University of Massachusetts at the Mullins Center. He is out indefinitely.
That occurred just when Duquesne had started to have some consistency in its personnel. Thiero and Kieron Achara both had returned from injuries giving Duquesne a presence inside. Ron Everhart's gastrointestinal problems that hospitalized him for five days were behind them.
The national spotlight that had followed the Dukes after the shooting in September of five players had faded and Duquesne could finally just focus on basketball for a while.
"To some degree, it's gotten to the point, this is about as normal as we've had it since we've been here," Everhart said Thursday.
He spoke too soon because Thiero was hospitalized the next day.
Duquesne is 5-10 (1/3 Atlantic 10), a record that might be better than expected considering the circumstances. Even before the shootings in September, little was expected of the Dukes who totally overhauled their roster after hiring Everhart in the spring.
When two of their better recruits - Stuard Baldonado and Sam Ashaolu - had their seasons ended by the shootings, the Dukes' prospects for success dimmed even further. Add to that an injury to Achara, their only big man of any note, and Thiero, who at least gave the Dukes some size at 6-foot-9, and Duquesne's seven-game losing streak from Nov. 20 to Dec. 16 was not surprising.
What was surprising, however, was how they broke the streak. With Everhart in the hospital, the Dukes upset Boston College 98-93 at Conte Forum.
"We started out without any big guys and then Achara got healthy and Almany got cleared from his surgery," Everhart said. "We're still struggling with having played one way and now playing another way with them. Our (on-court) chemistry has been up and down."
Freshman Robert Mitchell leads the team in scoring at 17.7 points per game which puts him near the top of the Atlantic 10, but even he ran afoul of Everhart and was suspended for a game for violating team rules.
A year from now Duquesne will likely get Baldonado back (Ashaolu's career remains in question) and add transfers Shawn James, who led the nation in shot-blocking in 2005-06 at Northeastern, and wing Kojo Mensah to the lineup.
As the Dukes struggle through this year, Everhart is conscious that any progress they make now creates a stronger foundation for next year.
"We're trying to create a mind-set and get as good as we can get every day. I don't think it's all that different from what Travis (Ford, UMass coach) went through last year," Everhart said. "We're trying to get as good as we can now, but at the same time we're trying to get our young guys prepared for a year down the road as well."
Because he missed the Boston College game, Sunday will mark Everhart's first game back in Massachusetts, where he rebuilt Northeastern's program before leaving for Duquesne. Several of his Boston friends planned to attend the game.
And his former assistant Adam Ginsburg is in his second year as an assistant coach at UMass.
The Minutemen (13-5, 3-1 A-10) are coming off an 83-77 loss at Xavier Thursday.
Everhart said he was thinking less about reunions and more about facing UMass big men Rashaun Freeman and Stephane Lasme, who both have played well lately.
"Our inside people are going to have to come to play," Everhart said. "Those guys are athletic and talented. We most definitely have our work cut out for us."

MHERST, Mass. - Senior shooting guard James Life (Fort Myers, Fla.) scored a game-high 24 points and junior Gary Forbes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 19 as UMass defeated scrappy Duquesne, 101-87, on Sunday afternoon in the Mullins Center. Life hit two free throws with 32 seconds remaining to push the score over the century mark for the first time in Mullins Center history.
UMass improves to 14-5 overall and 4-1 in the Atlantic 10, while Duquesne falls to 5-11 overall and 1-4 in league play. UMass will face Rhode Island this Wednesday in a showdown between the only one-loss teams in the A-10.
Life scored his 24 points on the strength of six three-pointers. Forbes was a perfect 8-for-8 on the day from the free throw line as part of his 19 and added nine rebounds.
![]() Ricky Harris had a solid game off the bench, with 13 points 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and no turnovers |
Duquesne was led by Robert Mitchell and Reggie Jackson who each scored 22 points. Kieron Achara scored 17, while Aaron Jackson tallied 11 points. Achara, Jackson, and Mitchell each had seven rebounds.
The Minutemen carried a 43-41 lead into halftime behind 17 points from Life. The Dukes came out firing holding an 8-2 lead to start the game and never trailing in the half by more than nine points.
The second half started out nip-and-tuck before UMass' depth became apparent with 10 different players scoring. The Dukes had pulled within three, 61-68, with 10:48 to play on a Achara lay-up. UMass then outscored Duquesne 40-29 from that point forward to crack the 100-point mark.
UMass shot 47 percent for the game hitting 35-of-74 shots from the floor. Duquesne hit 32-of-76 from the floor (42 percent). Duquesne, normally the best free throw shooting team in the league, hit just 11-for-22, while UMass shot 20-for-27 from the charity stripe.
The Minutemen held a decisive edge on the glass, 55-35, including 24 offensive rebounds.
This was the second time this season that UMass cracked the 100-point barrier having done so at Jacksonville State back in November, 100-69. The Minutemen are 33-2 all-time now when scoring over 100 points. This was the first time since the 1994-95 season that UMass has posted two 100-point games in the same season.
UMass will return to action on Wednesday night at Rhode Island. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m., as the game will decide the Atlantic 10's top team with both having just one league loss on the season.
Mass scored 100 points at the Mullins Center for the first time. The previous high of 99 was done against Saint Joseph's on Feb. 22, 1994. The record for points scored is 102 by Fresno State on Dec. 10, 1996.
* UMass is 33-2 when scoring 100 points in a game.
* The last time UMass scored 100 twice in a season was the 1994-95 campiagn.
* James Life scored in double-figures for the eighth game in a row with 24. He scored 17 in the first half alone. It was his 14th time in double-figures in 19 games this season and 29th in his two years at UMass. Over the last eight games, Life is averaging 16.4 points.
* Life tied his career-high at UMass with six made 3-pointers. He has done it twice before.
* Ten different UMass players scored in the game. It is the third time this year the Minutemen had 10 players score in a game this season, also done at Louisville and vs. Yale.
* Stephane Lasme had his ninth double-double of the season with 14 points and 17 rebounds. It marked the fourth time in five games he had a double-double. It was his 17th career double-double.
* The A-10's top rebounder Lasme had a career-high 17 rebounds. His previous high was 16 against Yale this season on Dec. 28, 2006.
* Gary Forbes broke the 10-point mark for the sixth game in a row with 19. He is scoring 16.7 over the last six games.
* Ricky Harris had his second game in double-figures with 13, tying his career high. He also scored 13 at Kentucky on Dec. 22. The big game comes in the heels of Harris not scoring in his previous five games.
* Harris scored on a driving lay-up in the first half, his first points in a game in six games. Brandon Thomas also scored for the first time in five games with a bank-shot early in the second half.
* Tiki Mayben had his first career blocked shot midway through the first half.
* Rashaun Freeman scored just six points, his second game not in double-figures this season.
* UMass had 55 rebounds, the most for the team in a game since they had 54 at St. Bonaventure on Feb. 26, 2006.
* Chris Lowe and Rashaun Freeman each drew charges in the game.
On the play of Ricky Harris:
"That game is a just a glimpse. You just saw what we see in practice every day. It wasn't just three either, he had some good hard drives. He's a gritty, hardworking player and once he gets more minutes he's going to be very, very good."
On the significance of the UMass win:
"We played their game for 40 minutes. I was very concerned about this game coming into it. I didn't sleep well last night because I was so concerned. This game comes at a tough time for us with an emotional game on Thursday and a very big game coming up. I'm just glad to get a victory today."
Stephane Lasme
On adjusting to Duquesne's style of play:
"Coach Ford stressed in practice that this was going to be a fast paced game, and we just tried to stick to the gameplan and play the way we wanted to. The Dukes are a very scrappy team. In the first half, we were rushing and playing into their hands, so in the second half, we tried to slow things down."
Ricky Harris
On the versatility of the Minutemen:
"Everyone on our team can play basketball. If Rashaun [Freeman] is not having a great game, then Dante Milligan or James Life will step it up. I was happy today that Coach gave me the opportunity to get some quality minutes. I played hard and didn't try to do too much. I'm taking this year to gain experience from players like Brandon Thomas, Gary Forbes and James Life."
Gary Forbes
On changing their gameplan:
"I think both teams played hard. We could not get Rashaun the ball, so we had to run the press. We ended up playing their style of basketball. When they were subbing five men at a time, we had to react quickly and know our matchups."
MHERST - Duquesne coach Ron Everhart got creative Sunday as he faced the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team's vaunted frontcourt with one of his two legitimate big men out of action.

It almost worked. Undersized, undermanned Duquesne hung around until a little after the midway point of the second half. But UMass dominated the glass and made enough shots to pull away 101-87. That is the most points the Minutemen have ever scored in the Mullins Center.
"It was the hardest 14-point victory I've had in a long time," UMass coach Travis Ford said. "Give Duquesne a lot of credit. They had a great game plan. We were probably just a little too big. They played with a lot of heart. My hat's off to them. We scratched and clawed for everything we got."
Everhart said he decided to play that way when senior big man Almany Thiero was hospitalized Friday with blood clots in his lungs, which left Duquesne with just one true big man.
"When Almany went down we decided we're going to have to get faster and more aggressive defensively," said Everhart, who changed his lineup five players at a time until foul trouble limited his ability to do that. "When I was back at Tulane (as an assistant coach) we did that a lot. The only advantage we would have over anybody right now is that we had some smaller guys who are quick enough to get the ball down the court quickly. We said we're going to speed things up and roll the dice."
Duquesne's playing style made it nearly impossible for the Minutemen (14-5, 4-1 Atlantic 10) to play Rashaun Freeman and Stephane Lasme at the same time because they struggled against the Dukes' trapping with both big men in the game.
Because Lasme was more effective, he played most of the second half and pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds to go with 14 points and five blocked shots. Freeman had a season-low six points in 19 minutes despite not committing a foul.
"Ray and Steph together weren't getting a lot done," Ford said. "We played the way Duquesne wanted us to play for 40 minutes. We weren't able to throw it inside and it got us out of our comfort zone."
"We just tried to stick to our game plan and get as many rebounds as we could," Lasme said.

The Minutemen play at Rhode Island at 7 p.m. Wednesday with first place in the Atlantic 10 on the line against the Rams (12-8, 5-1 A-10).
Robert Mitchell and Reggie Jackson each scored 22 points for Duquesne.
The Dukes were within 67-63 with 9 minutes, 22 seconds remaining, but Life's fourth foul may have been a blessing. Ford restructured his lineup to use both point guards and that ended the effectiveness of Duquesne's trapping.
UMass went on a 9-2 run and the Dukes never really threatened again.
Duquesne's struggles from the free-throw line limited its ability to stay in the game. The Dukes missed 11-of-22, including 7-of-15 in the second half.
UMass was uncharacteristically accurate, making 20-of-27 (74.1 percent).
"I thought our guys came out inspired, but UMass' toughness wore us down at the end," Everhart said.
Ford said, "I was on edge about this game. I didn't sleep well last night. I was glad to get the win."

James Life's eyes widen as the baseline path to the basket opens up.
MHERST - After the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team defeated Temple last weekend, coach Travis Ford predicted big things in the future for Ricky Harris even though the freshman guard had not scored in four straight games.
"I wish you could see how good Ricky Harris is," Ford said. "He's going to be a good player."
Fans got a glimpse of Harris' potential Sunday at the Mullins Center when the Minutemen beat Duquesne 101-87. With UMass employing a smaller lineup, Harris took advantage of his 18 minutes and tied his career high with 13 points.
"That's just a glimpse," Ford said. "He had some nice hard drives to the basket. He's a gritty, hard-nosed player. He's going to be very, very good."
Harris said he's just waiting his turn.
"It was just an opportunity to get some quality minutes," Harris said. "I obviously have confidence in myself. I had to take advantage of it. I'm learning from these guys. I'm taking this an experience year to get better. James Life is playing outstanding basketball right now. I'm using him to my advantage, learning from him every day, playing against him every day, as well as Gary Forbes and Brandon Thomas."
Forbes predicted a bright future for Harris.
"He's a good player. He can shoot the ball and get to the basket," Forbes said. "Next year is going to be an even better year for him."

Lasme's five blocks gave him 329 for his career. He needs seven to match Marcus Camby as the school's all-time leader.
CENTURY - Sunday was the first time the Minutemen scored in triple digits at the Mullins Center which opened halfway through the 1992-93 season. The previous high was 99 against Saint Joseph's Feb. 22, 2004. Fresno State still holds the building record with 102 Dec. 10, 1996.
It was the second time this year that the Minutemen scored 100, as they defeated Jacksonville State 100-69 Nov, 25. It was the first time UMass had scored 100 twice in the same season since 1994-95. UMass is 33-2 all time when cracking 100.
FIRST PLACE WEDNESDAY - The win coupled with Xavier's 82-74 loss at Saint Joseph's, means the Minutemen will play at Rhode Island at 7 p.m. Wednesday for first place in the Atlantic 10. The Rams are 12-8 overall and 5-1 in conference.
MOHAWKED - Five UMass players - Lasme, Harris, Rashaun Freeman, Chris Lowe and Dante Milligan all came out for the game with Mohawks.
"Ray asked everyone to get it. Our goal is to have everyone get one by the end of the season," Lasme said.

Chris Lowe works against Reggie Jackson.
MHERST - When you face the Duquesne men's team this winter, you have to get ready for more than just a college basketball game. You have to prepare for a cause.
Like the New Orleans Saints, the Dukes have become an athletic metaphor for grit and perspective after five players were injured in an shooting incident on campus in September. Ever since, it has been a season of deeper meaning and bigger lessons.
"Everyone knows what they've been through," said UMass coach Travis Ford. "These games are probably a little secondary to them right now. But they played with a lot of heart. That's the scrappiest, hardest-working team we've played in a long time."
"They're going through a lot this whole year, a lot of difficulties," said UMass junior Gary Forbes, who used to play high school and AAU ball with one of the shooting victims, Kojo Mensah. "But the way they played today, it seems like they're handling it pretty well."
Ford and Forbes were speaking after exhaling a few sighs of relief following UMass's 101-87 victory yesterday before 4,648 fans. It was a hard-fought win that was closer than the final score indicated.
In posting their first 100-point game at the Mullins Center since the building opened in 1993, the Minutemen 14-5 (4-1 in the Atlantic 10) got a game-high 24 points from James Life, 19 from Forbes, 14 apiece from Stephane Lasme and Chris Lowe, and a critical 13 from freshman Ricky Harris. Lasme was a menace on the boards with a career-high 17.
Duquesne (5-11, 1-4) got 22 points apiece from Reggie Jackson (Mr. January) and Robert Mitchell.
In a season of endless adaptation -- also marked by coach Ron Everhart's five-day hospitalization for an intestinal disorder, during which the Dukes posted a stunning upset at Boston College -- the Dukes had to deal with another obstacle yesterday. One of their few post players, Almany Thiero, was hospitalized earlier in the week for blood clots in his lungs.
Everhart adjusted in creative fashion by scrapping his playbook in favor of an all-out game of pressing, trapping, and jacking up threes as soon as possible. For quite a while he employed hockey-like five-man shifts, playing hell-bent ball for a couple of minutes at a stretch. His starting lineup included walk-on Jimmy Sherwood, who had logged all of two minutes this season.
"The only advantage we could have over anyone right now is that we have some smaller guys that are quick enough and can get the ball down the floor quickly," said Everhart. "So we just said, 'Let's roll the dice and speed things up, use everybody, keep fresh bodies on the floor.' "
For a while, it worked. Duquesne led for significant stretches of the first half, and trailed at the break by just 43-41.
"It was crazy out there," said Ford. "Very hard to watch from my standpoint."
Ford said that for the first time he could recall, his team did not run a set play all game. The Minutemen had trouble feeding the ball into the post, and their vulnerability to turnovers (14 in the first half) was on full display.
"We had to play our style of basketball," said Harris. "In the first half, we were rushing. We weren't patient with the ball. We were just playing into their hands."
That changed after intermission. Ford often went with a smaller lineup, playing Harris with Lowe and Tiki Mayben, while relegating an ineffective Rashaun Freeman (6 points, five turnovers) to the bench. With that lineup, the Minutemen were able to dissect the trap. Lasme also asserted himself underneath, as UMass pulled away.
"UMass wore us down," said Everhart. "I thought their conditioning was great.
"These guys are not only very good, but they're very deep . . . They're at least two-deep at each position with quality guys. When you look at teams that win leagues and go to NCAA Tournaments, this team certainly has all of those components."
With the win, UMass eclipsed last year's victory total. The Minutemen now get ready to tangle with first-place Rhode Island Wednesday night.
MHERST - The Atlantic 10 assumed an AAU persona yesterday at the Mullins Center.
With its 101-87 victory over Duquesne yesterday, UMass crossed the century mark at home for the first time since the Mullins Center opened in 1993. The old Minutemen scoring record of 99 was set under former coach John Calipari against St. Josephs on Feb. 22, 1994.
Yesterdays win in front of 4,648 improved the Minutemen to 14-5, 4-1 in the league. Duquesne fell to 5-11 and 1-4 in the A-10.
Dukes coach Ron Everhart employed an unorthodox high-risk-for-high-reward strategy that confounded the deeper, more talented Minutemen, and kept the game competitive until the final minutes. The Dukes attacked the Minutemen with full-court pressure and perimeter traps while making wholesale substitutions (44 total) to maintain their energy level.
The Minutemen unwittingly marched lockstep into the Dukes trap. But UMass prevailed because of 55-35 edge in rebounding, solid free throw shooting (74.1 percent) and five guys in scoring double figures led by shooting guard James Life with 24.
Stephane Lasme dominated the boards with a career-high 17 rebounds, 11 on the offensive end that contributed to his 14 points.
It got us out of our comfort zone a little bit, they got us doing things we dont normally do and havent done for a long time said UMass coach Travis Ford. Duquesne was just running up and trapping everything everywhere and they were taking a chance doing that. We didnt run one play tonight and Im a coach that likes to run plays. We run a lot of stuff, buy we didnt run one single play.
It was crazy out there and very hard to watch from my standpoint.
Duquesne continues to operate shorthanded after five of its players were shot at an on-campus party Sept. 17. Only guard Aaron Jackson has returned to the team. Now, backup center Almamy Thiero is out indefinitely after he was hospitalized Friday with blood clots in his lungs.
Everhart knew he needed a wrinkle to get his squad out of a funk that had the Dukes losing 3-of-4 A-10 games. Everhart instructed his guards, led by Reggie Jackson (22 points), to force UMass into a perimeter shootout. The main flaw in the strategy was that UMass, which made 11 3-pointers, hit just one less than the Dukes 12.
I really felt the biggest key to the game was UMass adjustment to the trap in the last six minutes, said Everhart, who coached Northeastern for four seasons (2002-2006). We thought wed try to force them to play a little bit faster.
UMass began to solve Everharts riddle in the final 10 minutes of the second half and outscored the Dukes, 34-24. Chris Lowe (14 points) started the run with a drive that made it 69-63 with 9:11 remaining. Ricky Harris and Gary Forbes provided the juice off the bench with a combined 32 points and 13 rebounds.
Life hit two from the line to finally put UMass over the 100-point mark.
MHERST - When Duquesne center Almamy Thiero checked into Pittsburghs Mercy Hospital Thursday night to get treated for blood clots in his lungs, it forced coach Ron Everhart to get a little creative with his now thinner bench.
That would explain why the Dukes came out with such an unorthodox scheme yesterday afternoon against Atlantic 10 foe UMass, something he hasnt run since he was an assistant coach at Tulane in the early 1990s. Everhart used a full-court, man-to-man, trapping style of play, and substituted his players in hockey-like patterns 44 times to be exact, mostly in groups of four and five. The unconventional approach gave UMass fits early, but the Minutemen eventually buckled down for a 101-87 win before a crowd of 4,648.
The win marked the first time the Minutemen scored 100 at the Mullins Center. They 104 points in a win over defending national champion Arkansas on Nov. 25, 1994, at the MassMutual Center in Springfield.
For UMass (14-5, 4-1), playing against the strategy proved a peeve coach Travis Ford, who loves to run plays, was unable to run even one.
Thats not an exaggeration, he said.
Additionally, star center Rashaun Freeman, the teams best option down low, attempted just one field goal in the second half.
But with the Dukes undersized lineup trying to take away the Minutemens inside game, that left wingmen James Life (game-high 24 points, six 3-pointers) and Gary Forbes (19 points, nine rebounds) open on the perimeter.
Everybody on our team, to the last leg on the bench, can play basketball. Anybody can come out on any given day and play good basketball. Just because Ray only took one field goal in the second half doesnt mean were going to be down, said freshman point guard Ricky Harris (13 points), who also speculated before the game that it would be like an AAU game.
The Dukes (5-11, 1-4) came out with an irregular starting five, which included Sharon native Jimmy Sherwood who came in having played just two minutes all year making his first career start. Duquesne forced some early turnovers in the backcourt, and went up 8-2 on a Robert Mitchell (22 points, seven rebounds) jumper from the right baseline, but the Minutemen, who missed six of their first nine field goal attempts, quickly snapped into it and found Life open on the wing en route to five first-half treys. Even so, UMass only led, 43-41, going into the break.
The Minutemen began to pull away late in the second as they began to bang it inside with senior forward Stephane Lasme (14 points, 17 rebounds). UMass finished the game on a 13-5 run, capped by Lifes two free throws that put the team over the century mark and received the loudest cheer of the day.
Reggie Jackson also notched 22 points for the Dukes. Duquesne center Kieron Achara, who came into the contest having made only two 3-pointers all year, knocked down three treys.
MHERST, Mass. - Duquesne men's basketball coach Ron Everhart unveiled a new-look lineup yesterday -- and it came close to paying off.
The Dukes rotated five-man units for much of the Atlantic 10 Conference game and had four players score in double figures. The University of Massachusetts (14-5, 4-1), however, had five players score in double figures and, led by James Life's 24 points, beat Duquesne, 101-87. It was the Minutemen's 11th consecutive win against the Dukes in the Mullins Center.
"It was the hardest 14-point victory I've had in a long time," Massachusetts coach Travis Ford said. "[Duquesne is] the hardest working team we've played."
Reggie Jackson and Robert Mitchell, each of whom scored 22 points, led the Dukes (5-11, 1-4), even though they were replaced in the starting lineup by little-used guards Jason Duty and Jimmy Sherwood.
All 10 of Duquesne's players got at least 11 minutes of playing time as Everhart substituted early, often and frequently with five-man groups. The game plan wasn't hatched until late last week.
"We started on Thursday when Almany [Thiero] went down and had the blood clots. We decided we were going to have to hurry up, we were going to have to get faster, we have to get much more aggressive defensively," said Everhart, "and not let guys pick us apart. We thought we'd get out and make teams get in a bigger hurry and force them to play faster."
After just three minutes of play, all 10 Dukes had seen action and the new look had produced a 6-0 lead. It would be Duquesne's biggest lead. The Minutemen came alive, built a nine-point lead and took a 43-41 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Duquesne's 6-foot-10 center Kieron Achara, the only Dukes player taller than 6-6, hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key at the beginning of the second half to give the upset-minded visitors a 44-43 lead. Two possessions later, however, Life tipped in a miss by Rashaun Freeman, giving Massachusetts a 45-44 lead, and the Minutemen never trailed again.
The Dukes, as expected, had trouble staying with the bigger Massachusetts players on the boards and were outrebounded, 55-36. Stephane Lasme, the reigning A-10 player of the week, had his ninth double-double of the year for the Minutemen with 14 points and 17 rebounds. He had 11 offensive boards.
"UMass' toughness just wore us down at the end. I thought we got ourselves in a position to be successful, but defensively Lasme [five blocks] challenged shots, altered shots, we missed some shots we would have hoped to make close to the basket," Everhart said. "I thought his offensive rebounding was phenomenal."
In the second half, every time Duquesne made a run at Massachusetts, the Minutemen found a way to respond. The Dukes' last run came when Jackson hit a 3-pointer with 9:20 to play, making it 67-63. Massachusetts countered with six unanswered points to go up by 10 and Duquesne never really challenged again.
Duquesne returns home Wednesday to face Dayton. The Dukes' rotating 10-man lineup could be on display again.
"I think it's something that fits us. I think the kids like it. They enjoy playing that way," Everhart said. "I think they can see that they had some opportunities today to have some success. They just couldn't take advantage of them, because we played a team that was that good and that well-coached."
MHERST, Mass. - Duquesne searched for a new trick Sunday, hoping to surprise another New England heavyweight.
This time, the Dukes fell short, though not before putting a scare into Massachusetts.
| Yielding 100 Before Sunday's 101-87 loss to Massachusetts, Duquesne hadn't given up 100 or more points since losing to George Washington, 109-57, on Jan. 28, 1999. |
The Minutemen (14-5, 4-1 Atlantic 10) survived 23 turnovers against a relentless Duquesne press that had Massachusetts coach Travis Ford scratching his head.
"That was the hardest 14-point victory I've had," Ford said. "Duquesne had a great game plan. We were just a little deeper.
"But that's the scrappiest, hardest-working team I've seen. My hat's off to them. That was not a 14-point game."
Following the indefinite loss of reserve center Almamy Thiero, who has blood clots in his lungs, Duquesne coach Ron Everhart asked his team to step up the tempo in practice during the days leading to yesterday's A-10 Conference game.
"Our guys came out and played inspired, but UMass' toughness just wore us down," Everhart said. "We were in position to be successful on several occasions, but Lasme challenged our guys and altered a number of shots. His offensive rebounding was phenomenal."
Gary Forbes added 19 points, Chris Lowe scored 14 and Ricky Harris had 13 for Massachusetts.
Reggie Jackson and Robert Mitchell led Duquesne (5-11, 1-4) with 22 points apiece. It was the freshman Mitchell's eighth college game of at least 20 points, but he converted only 8-of-23 field-goal attempts.
Duquesne improved on its shooting over its previous two games -- home losses to La Salle and Fordham -- when the Dukes made just 6-of-38 3-point attempts. Yesterday, they went 12 for 31 (38.7 percent) from behind the arc and finished at 42.1 percent (32 for 76) overall.
Duquesne has lost four of its past five after beating St. Francis (Pa.), Boston College and Saint Louis during a four-game road stretch.
Against Massachusetts yesterday, Everhart used two "starting fives." He surprised Ford and his Minutemen by opening with a lineup consisting of seldom-used walk-ons Jason Duty and Jimmy Sherwood and freshman Stephen Wood, along with regulars Kieron Achara and Aaron Jackson.
It took that group only about 2 1/2 minutes to work up a good sweat before it was relieved by a group made up of the rest of the regular starting lineup -- Reggie Jackson, Mitchell and Scott Grote -- part-time starter Phillip Fayne and regular sub Gary Tucker.
Everhart rotated the groups for about half of the first half before mixing and matching the 10-man rotation. All the while, the Dukes mixed full- and half-court trapping defensive schemes that forced Massachusetts to rush its play.
"When Big Al (Thiero) went out and we knew we didn't have him anymore, coach came up with the run-and-gun game plan," said Aaron Jackson, who scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds to go with two steals. "We were totally committed to it as soon as he said it. We were excited."
Said Everhart: "I think our guys bought into it. We're going to keep it going and see what happens."
Achara also scored in double figures for Duquesne with 17 points. He and Mitchell joined Aaron Jackson with seven rebounds. However, Massachusetts held a 55-35 edge on the boards.
Duquesne's furious style kept 6-foot-9 senior Rashaun Freeman, the A-10 Preseason Player of the Year, out of the game offensively. Freeman, who came in averaging 17.6 points per game, was held to six points, which represented only his second single-digit game of the season.
Massachusetts led at halftime, 43-41, and built a 14-point lead with 5:36 remaining on a basket by Lasme. After Duquesne cut the deficit to eight twice -- the final time at 88-80 on a 3-point shot by Reggie Jackson -- Massachusetts pulled away, ignited by Harris' ensuing three-point play.
The Minutemen, last in the A-10 in free-throw shooting (59.7 percent) converted 8 of 9 in the final 3:19 and finished 20 of 27 for the game. Duquesne, first in the league (74.7), made just 11 of 22.
Notes: Thiero remained hospitalized yesterday at UPMC Mercy after admitting himself late Thursday night for blood clots on his lungs. Everhart said he spoke to Thiero via telephone, and the graduate student, who arrived at Duquesne after playing three seasons at Memphis, told the coach he still was experiencing pain. ... Duquesne plays three consecutive home games beginning Wednesday against Dayton. Temple visits the Dukes on Saturday, and Xavier makes an appearance Jan. 31.
