MHERST - University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Travis Ford is trying to push James Life's buttons a little bit as the Minutemen prepare to face Rhode Island at 7 tonight at the Ryan Center.
In practice, in meetings and while watching game film, Ford has raved about Ram sophomore guard Jimmy Baron. There's plenty to rave about because the URI coach's son and namesake is shooting 52.1 percent from 3-point range which puts him among the nation's top 10 shooters from that distance. But Ford's reasoning is a little more pointed.
"That's all I've been doing, pumping up Jimmy Baron. 'This is one of the greatest 3-point shooters in the country,'" Ford said. "I know it's getting under James' skin a little bit. It's a great challenge. I think he sees that. I think he takes it as a challenge thinking 'I'm a great 3-point shooter too.'"
He has good reason to think that again. Life struggled through the most frustrating season of his life last year when he shot 30.2 percent from 3-point distance as he made the often difficult adjustment from junior college to Division I. He admitted that he had confidence issues and that he was homesick.
"Last year was the toughest year of my life in my whole career," Life said.
His confidence has returned. Life is in the midst of a strong senior season, averaging 13.2 points per game and making 42.4 percent of his 3-pointers. His defense and overall game has been better too.
"James Life hasn't changed his game from last year to this year, he's just playing better," Ford said. "It's the transition from junior college to senior year. He doesn't force fewer shots, he just makes more of them so it doesn't look like he's forcing them. He's taking the same shots. More of them are going in."
Life agreed having a year under his belt has been beneficial.
"I think a year of experience has helped me at this level," he said. "I have a better understanding of what to expect. Last year the expectations I had for myself were pretty high. It is fun because we're winning and I'm playing a lot of minutes."
He still misses home in Fort Myers, Fla., a lot.
"I'm making the best of it," Life said. "If we could move the team and the staff down to Florida, I'd be 100 percent happy."
Tonight, happiness would be slowing down Baron.
"I know he's shooting 52 percent which is really good. I'm not going to go out and try to jack up threes and outshoot him," Life said. "I'm just going to make him shoot bad shots and make sure everything is challenged. My defense will lead to offense for myself and others."
Baron isn't Rhode Island's only weapon. After being picked to finish 11th in the league's preseason poll, the Rams (12-8) are 5-1 in the conference, which puts them in first place in the A-10. They are percentage points ahead of UMass (14-5) and George Washington, which are both 4-1.
"I watched the last five or six games," Ford said. "I don't see how they've lost eight games. I like their pieces to the puzzle. They have their shooter. They have a three man that can score, who is a one-on-one player, who is athletic and can do some things. They have fours and fives. They're very good."
The three man Ford referred to is junior wing Will Daniels, who leads the team with 17.2 points per game. Sophomore Kahiem Seawright has blossomed as well, averaging 10.6 points and 8.3 rebounds.
Rhode Island is 8-2 at home this season and is on a three-game winning streak that includes victories at Temple and Saint Joseph's.
NOTE: Tonight's game is the Ryan Center's "Pink Out." All fans are encouraged to wear pink for breast cancer awareness. Pink T-shirts will be sold at the game with all proceeds going to the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation.

INGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island hit 16 straight free throws in the final 4:12 to overcome UMass 75-72 on Wednesday night at the Ryan Center. UMass led by as many as nine and clutched a lead over the Rams for much of the game until just after the halfway mark of the second half. Senior forward Stephane Lasme (Libreville, Gabon) tied the UMass career blocked shots record to match Marcus Camby's 336 with seven swats on the night.
UMass falls to 14-6 overall and 4-2 in the Atlantic 10, while Rhode Island improves to 13-8 overall and 6-1 for the A-10 lead.
The Minutemen disrupted the Rams around the perimeter as Rhode Island entered the game as the top three-point shooting team in the conference. League leader Jimmy Baron was held to just 1-for-5 from behind the arc, while the team was just 4-for-17. URI made up the difference, however, at the free throw line where the Rams converted 33-of-43 attempts including the 16 consecutive in the final minutes.

Senior center Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.) led UMass with 19 points and 12 rebounds. James Life (Fort Myers, Fla.) scored 19 points as well on the strength of five three-pointers. Freshman guard Ricky Harris (Baltimore, Md.) added 10 points off the bench.
Will Daniels led Rhode Island with 20 points hitting 9-of-13 free throws. Baron added 11 points and Keith Cothran added 14 off the bench.
The two teams went to halftime with UMass ahead 28-23. Rhode Island started cold hitting just one of their first 11 shots.
The Rams fought back in the second half to tie the game at 45 each with 11:51 to play after a three-pointer from Parfait Bitee.
Baron then hit three free throws after being fouled behind the arc to give Rhode Island a 51-49 lead with 7:08 to play after trailing all game.
UMass briefly retook the lead on a Life three-pointer, but Baron hit a three on the next possession, his only field goal of the game, to give the Rams a 54-52 lead with 5:32 remaining.
Gary Forbes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tied the game and stayed close until Daniels hit a three-pointer with 1:51 to go stretching the lead to 62-56.
Rhode Island put together a 12-4 run down the stretch until Harris hit a pair of lay-ups and Life hit another three-pointer with 14 seconds to play after stealing the inbounds pass at halfcourt.
The Rams hit four straight free throws in the final 12 seconds and sophomore point guard Chris Lowe (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) hit a lay-up and then a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the final score.
The Minutemen finished the game shooting 28-of-63 from the floor including 9-for-25 from behind the arc. Rhode Island shot 19-for-49 from the floor and was limited to just 4-of-17 from behind the arc. The free throw line was the major difference on the night as UMass shot 7-for-10 and URI shot 33-for-43.
UMass will head to Charlotte on Sunday for a 1 p.m. tip-off. The game will be carried on TV38 WSBK in Massachusetts. In the local area, it can be viewed on Comcast Cable Channel 14, Charter Cable Channel 8 and RCN Cable Channel 8.
tephane Lasme tied the UMass record for career blocked shots with seven in the game giving him 336 for his career. He passed National Player of the Year Marcus Camby, who had 336 from 1993-96.
* Lasme also moved to tie for third in single-season blocked shots with his seven. He now has 105. He passed Camby's marks of 103 in 1994-95 and tied with him at 105 in 1993-94.
* Lasme had two blocked shots in the first five minutes as reached 100 in the season early in the 20th game of the season.
* Rashaun Freeman scored in double-figures for the 18th time in 20 games this season with 19. In his 105 career games, he has 82 games in double-figures.
* Freeman had his 10th double-double of year and 40th of his career with 12 rebounds.
* James Life scored in double-figures for the ninth game in a row and 15th time in 20 games this season with 19. He is averaging 16.8 points per game in that stretch.
* Ricky Harris scored in double-figures for the second game in a row with 10. He has 23 points in his last two games after not scoring in five games.
* Rhode Island attempted 43 free throws while UMass had just 10.
* UMass held Rhode Island scoreless for the first 6:07 of the game before Will Daniels made a free throw. The Rams missed their first eight shots of the game before Keith Cothran made a layup with 6:38 left in the first half.
* UMass held an 11-4 lead through the first 10 minutes of the game as Rhode Island started off 1-of-12 from the floor, missing their first seven 3-pointers.
Coach Ford On Free Throw Shooting
We sent them to the foul line 43 times and we couldn't get to the foul line. Obviously we had to foul at the end, but it was still too much.
Coach Ford On Defensive Effort
I thought our defense was good enough in the first half that we should have been up by 12, but the mistakes killed us. We didn't do a lot of things that we normally do.
OUTH KINGSTOWN -- There is something special going on with the University of Rhode Island basketball team, an unexpected and thoroughly entertaining revival.
The surprises the Rams are pulling off keep getting better and better. The best yet came last night in a showdown for the top spot in the Atlantic 10, a rollicking 75-72 victory over Massachusetts at the Ryan Center.
The shock this time one was not necessarily that Rhode Island (13-8, 6-1 in the A-10) won, but the way it did it. Rather than running and gunning, as is the preferred style this season, this one was a throwback to the old bump-and-grind days, a physical, knock-down, drag-em-out joust that required grit and determination.
URI went 6:37 into the game before getting its first field goal. It was 1-for-11 eight minutes in. It had one field goal in the first 10:17. The leading team in the A-10 in 3-point shooting, the Rams went 4-for-17 behind the arc on the night.
But like the early Jim Baron teams used to do, with the likes of Dawan Robinson and Brian Woodward fighting and scrapping, this new team got down and dirty and refused to lose, to borrow an old UMass expression.
"We had two battles with them last year. We knew we were just going to have to tough it out and thats what happened," said Rhody forward Kahiem Seawright, who did exactly that himself against the taller Minutemen forwards.
"It just shows how were coming on," Seawright said. "I feel like you have to like you have to win games different ways. You can't win games the same way. Teams are different."
"Against UMass," you have to be tough," agreed Rhody coach Jim Baron. Baron has gotten his team focused during practice on rebounding. UMass leads the conference in rebound margin.
"That's what we talked about and the guys did it," Baron said, noting his team won the battle of the boards, 37-32.
Will Daniels led the Rams with 20 points, freshman Keith Cothran added 14, including eight down the stretch in a superb effort, and Jimmy Baron added 11. For the Minutemen (14-6, 4-2), Rashaun Freeman and James Life each had 19 points.
UMass coach Travis Ford was not at all happy with the foul shooting numbers URI was 33-for-43 and his team 7-for-10 but he did not disagree with Baron's assessment.
"We didn't play hard enough," Ford said.
Was that an effort issue?" he was asked.
"Yep," he said.
Ford warned that his team might have problems for its next game on Sunday.
"We might have some tired guys," he said in his best Bill Belichick imitation after a loss.
URI, perhaps coming out too hyper with easily the biggest crowd of the season (7,021) rooting it on, went 11 possessions before it got its first points. That came on two free throws by Daniels.
The Rams made only one of their first 11 shots, that a driving bucket by Cothran. They had only 24 first-half points. But they fought and defended and rebounded well enough that UMass only had 28 points and a four-point lead at the break.
Rhode Island tied the score at 45 on a 3-pointer by Parfait Bitee, and took its first lead, at 51-49, on three free throws by Jimmy Baron.
The lead grew as high as 70-60, helped by a big steal by Cothran and a key blocked shot by Seawright, both of which turned into points for the Rams at the other end.
Daniels, Baron, Cothran and just about everyone coach Baron used contributed as they ran and dove and scrapped their way to their biggest victory yet.
"We're coming on strong. We're coming together as a team," Cothran said.
They are coming on far better, and far quicker, than anyone could have expected.
omplete with a storming of the court, the University of Rhode Island men's basketball team defeated the University of Massachusetts at home Wednesday, 75-72.
Well, that is not entirely accurate.
Only two fans rushed the court, but the rest of the 7,000-plus fans witnessed the biggest win for the young Rams this season.
The 2,657-student crowd - many clad in pink to benefit the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation - was not only the largest in the history of the Ryan Center, but also essential to the Rams win.
"It felt good," freshman Keith Cothran said of the crowd's support. "That's how I expect it to be from now on."
Sophomore Kahiem Seawright shared Cothran's thoughts. "I just want to thank our fans, they gave us great energy tonight."
Feeding off the support of the crowd, the Rams took its first lead on three Jimmy Baron free throws with 7:08 to play.
The way the Rams fought back was like Rocky Balboa waiting until the late rounds to knock out the more physical Clubber Lang in Rocky III.
Not only was UMass more physical than the underdog Rams, but many of its players sported the mohawk popularized by the immortal Mr. T.
The two A-10 elites battled back and forth, until the Rams took the lead for good on a Seawright free throw with 4:12 remaining.
The Rams won the game at the free throw line. It shot 33 of 43 from the charity stripe, as opposed to 7 of 10 for UMass.
"The stats don't lie," UMass head coach Travis Ford said.
UMass had led for the better part of the game, but in the final four minutes the Rams stepped up and grabbed the game by the throat.
The Rams extended its lead to 10 points with 27 seconds remaining, the largest by either team at any point.
The final score may have been 75-72, but that was not indicative of the Rams performance down the stretch. The game was not nearly that close.
Either team could have easily taken control of this sloppy game in which there was a combined 34 turnovers, but it was the Rams who rose to the occasion.
This is why the team is top in the Atlantic 10; when the pressure has been on, it has not folded.
The Rams faced the best big man combination in the conference against UMass' Rashaun Freeman and Stephen Lasme, and played them to a standstill.
"They were much tougher than us tonight," Ford said. The Rams outmuscled UMass, even though it has played a finesse style for the better part of the year.
"If he said that, I guess we were," Seawright said of Ford's comment. The Rams faced one of the most physical teams in the conference, and beat them at its own game.
The Rams outrebounded UMass 37-32, a feat no other conference team has accomplished this season.
Despite the win, senior Darrell Harris went down midway through the first half with an ankle injury.
Harris elevated for a three-quarter-court pass, but was pushed from behind by UMass' James Life.
He landed awkwardly on his ankle, and had to be helped off the court. Head coach Jim Baron said Harris is out indefinitely and will be re-evaluated once x-rays are taken.
Harris had been playing well for the Rams all season, and it will be difficult to make up for his production.
Freshman Jonathan Cruz played crucial minutes late in the game, and held his own against one of the A-10's best scorers.
"When Darrell went down, we had all underclassmen," Jim Baron said. "And when Jonathan Cruz went in I said, 'we've got a freshman on Freeman.'"
However when UMass isolated Freeman in the post he was unable to score against Cruz.
Offensively the red-hot Rams were led in scoring by junior Will Daniels with 20 points, 16 coming in the second half. "I didn't play my game in the first half," Daniels said.
Cothran has continued to impress, scoring six of his 14 points in the final minute of the game. "I'm just getting a lot more comfortable with the team playing with the upperclassmen," Cothran said.
Junior Joe Mbang added nine points off the bench, including a thunderous put-back slam.
The Rams (13-8 overall, 6-1 conference) will defend first place in the A-10 against George Washington University at home Saturday at 2 p.m.
"It makes [the game] very big [after winning]. George Washington knows it's very big," Daniels said.
INGSTON, R.I. - Whenever UMass and Rhode Island clash, the game is sure to be physical. With first place in the Atlantic 10 on the line last night, the rivalry was as intense as ever, as the teams traded blows until the final buzzer in front of a season-high 7,021 fans at the Ryan Center.
For the first 30 minutes, the Minutemen were in control, but they lacked a knockout punch and the Rams were able to pull out a 75-72 victory and retain first place in the league, thanks to timely shooting and strong defense down the stretch.
“I knew it was going to be very physical,” URI sophomore forward Kahiem Sea-wright said. “I knew coming in it was going to be one of those games (in which) we were just going to have to tough it out and that’s what we did.”
UMass coach Travis Ford said he was frustrated with his team’s effort, but the second-place Minutemen (14-6, 4-2 A-10) certainly made URI (13-8, 6-1) work for its points. URI entered the game ranked 15th in the nation in 3-point shooting percentage, but UMass held the Rams to just 4-of-17 shooting from beyond the arc.
![]() Jimmy Baron has to get through Tiki Mayben and Stephane Lasme for the shot. |
UMass senior forward Stephane Lasme controlled the paint as he has all season, collecting seven blocks to tie Marcus Camby for the UMass career record of 336. The Minutemen also forced URI into 16 turnovers, but were unable to capitalize as they returned the favor with 18 giveaways.
Difficulties handling the ball and getting good looks plagued the Minutemen in the second half, as they watched their lead slip away.
“It was very frustrating,” UMass sophomore point guard Chris Lowe said. “We made a lot of mistakes in crucial moments. We just have to learn from them.”
UMass got 19 points each from James Life and Rashaun Freeman, but struggled to get the ball inside to Freeman down the stretch.
URI was led by junior forward Will Daniels’ 20 points, including a dagger-wielding 3-pointer that gave the Rams a 62-56 lead with 1:51 remaining. The Rams defense sealed the win, as freshman guard Keith Cothran stripped Lasme with 58 seconds left and UMass down 6 and then converted two free throws after being fouled.
“It was a hard-fought game. You have to be tough playing against UMass,” coach Baron said. “I told our guys, ‘These guys are going to teach us a lesson about being physical and not looking for the officials to make a call,’ and I thought we handled the ball well for the most part.”
INGSTON, R.I. - For the second straight week, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team watched first place slip through its fingers.
The Minutemen led by seven early in the second half Wednesday, but Rhode Island got the better of a sloppy game and beat UMass 75-72 at the Ryan Center.
UMass coach Travis Ford was angry after the game, blaming his team's effort for the result.
"We didn't play hard enough," Ford said. "They were much tougher than us tonight. ... It was very disappointing."
The game leaves Rhode Island alone in first place in the Atlantic 10 at 6-1 (13-8 overall), while he Minutemen dropped into a tie for third at 4-2 (14-6 overall).
"We looked like we didn't come ready to play," said UMass senior big man Stephane Lasme, whose seven blocked shots tied him with Marcus Camby for the UMass career record with 336. "You're not supposed to take any team lightly at this stage of the season. ... They were more ready than we were. I don't think everyone thought this was going to be a dogfight."
The teams play again in Amherst at 8 p.m. Feb. 8.
"We'll be ready," Lasme said. "I'll make sure my teammates are ready."
The Rams chipped away in the second half, eventually tying the game at 45-45 with 11 minutes, 51 seconds remaining.
The Minutemen seemed to absorb the blow by answering with four straight points, but Rhode Island countered with a 5-0 run capped by three free throws by Jimmy Baron that put the Rams up 51-49. Baron had been quiet until that point, but after James Life hit a deep 3-pointer to put UMass ahead 52-51, Baron answered with a trey of his own for his only field goal of the game.
Gary Forbes put back his own miss to tie the score, but Kahiem Seawright made one of two free throws to give Rhode Island the lead for good.
A 9-2 run stretched the Rams' lead to 66-58 with 56 seconds left, forcing the Minutemen to shoot 3-pointers and foul. Their last desperate surge made the game close late, but the Rams made enough free throws to escape.
Will Daniels was big for the Rams down the stretch, scoring eight of his 20 points in the last three minutes.
"It's very frustrating," sophomore point guard Chris Lowe said. "We made a lot of mistakes in crucial moments. We have to learn from them for when we see those guys again. There were just mental lapses. That's something we have to work on as a team."
Despite being considerably smaller, URI outrebounded UMass 37-32. The Rams did considerable damage at the line making 33 of 43 free throws, while the Minutemen only attempted 10 and made seven.
"The stat says enough," said Ford, who was angrily curt in his postgame press conference.
Rashaun Freeman (12 rebounds) and Life each scored 19 points for UMass, while Ricky Harris had 10.
The Minutemen held the Rams without a field goal for the first 6:35 of the game, but UMass was not much better, making just four of its first 13 shots. The Minutemen got back-to-back 3-pointers by Harris to pull ahead 16-7.
Lasme picked up his second foul 5:38 into the first half but still played 16 minutes and blocked four first-half shots, helping the Minutemen to a 28-24 lead at the break.
"I thought we played good enough defense in the first half that we should have been up more," Ford said.
Ford promised some difficult practices before Sunday's 1 p.m. game at Charlotte.
"It will be addressed," he said. "We may get killed on Sunday because we could have some tired guys."

INGSTON, R.I. - Until his next blocked shot, University of Massachusetts senior big man Stephane Lasme will share the stage with Marcus Camby.
Lasme's seven blocked shots Wednesday gave him 336 in his career and tied him with Camby, who amassed his total from 1993 to 1996.
Lasme has 105 blocks this season, tying him with Camby's 1993-94 season for the third best single-season total in school history. He needs 23 more to match Camby's 1995-96 total of 128, the best ever at UMass.
Lasme, who has downplayed records before, was particularly ambivalent about it after Wednesday's 75-72 loss at Rhode Island.
"It didn't mean anything before, it doesn't mean anything now," he said. "I just want to win."
STREAK SNAPPED - Gary Forbes' streak of six straight games in double figures ended. The junior forward had four points and two rebounds before fouling out in 14 minutes.
NEXT UP - The Minutemen make their first visit to Charlotte at 1 p.m. Sunday. The 49ers have struggled so far at 8-9 (2/3 Atlantic 10). Charlotte plays at Saint Louis tonight.
BROWER'S BIRTHDAY - Junior forward Etienne Brower celebrated his 22nd birthday Wednesday by returning to the starting lineup, replacing Brandon Thomas. Brower blocked a shot early, but missed his first four shots and finished with three points.
MISCELLANEOUS - Rhode Island center Darrell Harris left the game with an injured knee in the first half and did not return.
This was the first game all year that UMass shot a higher percentage than its opponent and lost.
The game set an all-time record for Rhode Island student attendance as 2,657 attended as part of URI's season-best crowd of 7,021, many of whom were dressed in pink as part of "Pink Out Night," a breast-cancer fund-raiser.
Ex-UMass players Ronell Blizzard, who is studying for his doctorate at Johnson & Wales, and Tyrone Weeks, who is also a former Rhode Island assistant coach, were at the game.
