MHERST - After watching Rhode Island's zone help deny the University of Massachusetts big men the ball late in Wednesday's game, UMass coach Travis Ford said the Minutemen need to get better at countering that beginning Sunday or they can expect to see that defense every night.
"They played a pretty packed in zone. There were giving us threes pretty much anytime we wanted them," Ford said. "That was Rhode Island's game plan, to not let Rashaun Freeman and Stephane Lasme beat them.
"I don't think that's going to be the last time we're going to see that type of game plan," Ford added. "I told them they just can't be denied. We still have to get it inside. They have to post harder and want the ball more. Everybody's game plan is to stop them."
UMass (14-6, 4-2 Atlantic 10) will try to improve at 1 p.m. Sunday against an opponent which has been inconsistent all season. Charlotte (8-10, 2-4 A-10) has looked great at times but has been unable to sustain it.
The 49ers have attempted 478 3-pointers, which is 46.1 percent of all their shots and 76 more than any other A-10 team. That's an average of 26.6 per game. UMass has attempted that many or more only once all season.
Charlotte has the league's second worst 3-point shooting percentage at 32.8. But the bad news for the Minutemen is that the 49ers are better at home at 35.5 percent.
"All of their percentages are up in the league. They've been a different team since they've gotten to conference," Ford said. "They shoot a lot. It's one of their team's strengths. They can get hot from that area."
Senior wing De'Angelo Alexander leads Charlotte with 18.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game followed by Leemire Goldwire at 13.3 points per game.
E.J. Drayton, who was a medical redshirt last year, has been the 49ers' most productive inside player with 13.1 points and 8.6 rebounds.
Charlotte beat the Minutemen 72-71 in their first meeting as conference rivals last Feb. 22. Ford's lasting impression from that game was a 25-0 run by the 49ers.
"That's what they're capable of doing still," Ford said. "It can go in the other direction as well. We have to do a much better job."
Charlotte is trying to end a two-game losing streak, while the Minutemen are trying to avoid their first back-to-back losses of the season.
NOTES: Lasme needs just one blocked shot to become the all-time leader at UMass in the category. He's tied with Marcus Camby with 336 career blocks.
The game will be televised on TV38 (WSBK), the first of three that station will air as part of the its deal with CSTV Syndication. Fans also can watch the game on streaming video online for $9.95. Links are available through umassathletics.com.

HARLOTTE - UMass overcame an early 25-9 first-half deficit to rally in the second half at Halton Arena for a 66-61 win at Charlotte in a key Atlantic 10 match-up on Sunday afternoon. The trio of senior Stephane Lasme (Libreville, Gabon), senior Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.), and redshirt junior Gary Forbes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) were instrumental in the come-back win as each scored in double figures. Lasme set the new UMass career blocked shots record blocking three in the game to give him 339 and surpass Marcus Camby's previous school record.
The Minutemen improve to 15-6 overall and 5-2 in the A-10, while Charlotte falls to 8-11 overall and 2-6 in the league.
The 16 point deficit was the largest UMass has faced this season in Atlantic 10 play. Earlier this season at La Salle, the Explorers built a 14-point first half lead against the Minutemen before UMass was able to right the ship in the second half to win.
Freeman recorded his first 41st career double-double with a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds. Forbes scored 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting, while Lasme scored 12 points, had nine rebounds, and blocked three shots.
Lasme now owns the UMass career blocked shots record with 339 after tying Camby on Wednesday night at Rhode Island. He has 108 for the season which is ties the school's second-best single season mark which he set last year. He needs 21 more blocks this season to own the UMass single season record.
Despite the large deficit early in the first half, the Minutemen continued to chip away at the 49er lead cutting it to just three, 32-29, at halftime. UMass came out firing in the second half and took a brief lead 35-34 on a Lasme tip-in with 17:06 to go.
Charlotte reclaimed the lead on the next possession and extended it to as many as five before sophomore Chris Lowe (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) and redshirt junior Etienne Brower (West Hempstead, N.Y.) hit back-to-back three pointers and Freeman hit a lay-up to cap a 12-2 run to give UMass a 47-42 lead with 10:19 to play.
The 49ers made a run to answer the Minutemen tying the game 55-55 on a tip-in by E.J. Drayton with 3:14 remaining.
As they had all game, UMass continued to absorb the punches and put together a run of their own taking a 62-58 lead on a free throw by Forbes.
The UMass defense kept Leemire Goldwire quiet until the final 30 seconds when he hit his first three-pointer of the game to cut UMass' lead to just two, 63-61, with 28.4 seconds.
The 49ers tried to extend the game with fouls, but the Minuteman defense held tight and Lowe hit three-of-four free throws in the waning seconds to give the final margin of victory.
For the game, UMass' Ricky Harris (Baltimore, Md.) held Goldwire to just two field goals and 11 points. De'Angelo Alexander, the A-10's third leading scorer at just over 18 points per game, was held in check to just 13 points - none in the second half.
Drayton led Charlotte in the scoring column with 16 points and added 13 rebounds. Alexander's 13 points was second, while Goldwire added 11 points.
UMass finished the game shooting 24-for-52, while Charlotte hit 21-for-57 from the floor. The free throw line was key as UMass shot 13-for-22 and the 49ers shot 13-for-20. Bench points were key for UMass who had a 14-to-8 advantage thanks in part to Etienne Brower who scored seven points in reserve.
The Minutemen will now have six days off before facing Richmond in the Mullins Center next Saturday, Feb. 3 at Noon.
tephane Lasme became UMass' all-time career shot block leader with a swat early in the second half. Lasme passed Marcus Camby, who had 336 in his UMass career from 1993-96. Lasme finished with three blocks in the game and has 339 in his career.
* Lasme scored in double-figures for the 14th time this season and seventh time in eight games with 12 points.
* Rashaun Freeman scored in double-figures for the 19th time in 21 games this season and 83 in 106 career games with 18 points.
* Freeman had his 11th double-double of the season and 41st of his career with 11 rebounds.
* Gary Forbes returned to the starting line-up for the first time since Dec. 22 at Kentucky and scored in double-figures for the 16th time in 21 games this year and for the 40th time in his career with 13 points.
* Ricky Harris played great defense on Charlotte's second-leading scorer Leemire Goldwire all afternoon. As he made just one field goal with Harris guarding him and his way to 11 points.
* UMass held Charlotte's leading scorer De'Angelo Alexander, to just 13 points including just one in the second half.
* The game was UMass' first at Charlotte as the 49ers joined the A-10 last season.
Coach Ford On Charlotte Defense
They ran a lot of different defenses against us and we were able to recognize those and still execute our plays. Chris Lowe and Tiki Mayben did a good job for us.
Coach Ford On Keeping Charlotte Stars Quiet
We did a good job taking the game away from Goldwire and Alexander. We said if the other guys on the team beat us, fine, just don't let those big two get hot.
Coach Ford On Foul Situation
We had a good whistle night where we were able to get to the line similarly to our opponent as opposed to the last couple of games.
HARLOTTE, N.C. - The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team used its bruising one-two punch of Stephane Lasme and Rashaun Freeman to wear down the Charlotte front line, hold off a late 49er rally and escape Halton Arena with a 66-61 victory Sunday.
But this one didn't come easy.
With 28 seconds to play and UMass leading by five, Charlotte guard Leemire Goldwire nailed a 3-pointer to cut the Minuteman lead to 63-61. The 49ers then forced Etienne Brower into the corner on the inbound pass, but Brower was granted a time-out when it appeared he was falling out of bounds. The officials conferred and determined Brower had possession and called the time-out before his momentum carried him out of bounds.
The Minutemen used the time-out to set up a play for Chris Lowe who drove the length of the floor and was fouled. Lowe hit both free throws to extend the lead to 65-61. He hit one more down the stretch for the final margin.
Freeman led the Minutemen with 18 points, 10 of which came in the second half. He also grabbed 11 rebounds to record his 11th double-double of the season. Lasme added 12 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field.
Gary Forbes, who returned to the starting lineup, contributed 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
The win moved the Minutemen to 15-6 overall, 5-2 in Atlantic 10 play, which ties them with Xavier and Fordham for third place in the conference behind George Washington (6-1) and Rhode Island (6-2). UMass does not play a midweek game and hosts Richmond at noon Saturday. The 49ers dropped their third straight and fell to 8-11 (2-5 A-10).
The Minutemen had to dig their way out of a 25-9 hole to start the game. But UMass never deviated from the game plan to go inside on the Niners and eventually outscored Charlotte 20-7 to close the first half.
Lasme, Freeman, and Brower combined for 18 points in the half and caused Charlotte to pack into a zone.
"Everybody knows by now that we're going inside," UMass coach Travis Ford said. "Charlotte's probably the biggest, most physical team we've played. I told our guys this wasn't going to be like a lot of other teams in our league where we're just bigger than they are."
While UMass struggled from the 3-point line in the half, it wasn't for a lack of open looks. Freeman and Lasme drew frequent double teams, leaving open shots for the Minutemen guards. One 3-pointer each for Ricky Harris and James Life was all UMass (2-for-9 in the half on long balls) had to show for it.
Meanwhile, the UMass defense turned up the pressure on the Charlotte long-range threats. The Minutemen held the 49ers to just 16 attempts in the game from beyond the arc.
"I told our team, it's not that I don't want Charlotte to make threes, I don't want them taking threes," Ford said. "For a team that's averaging 29 threes a game, to hold them to 16, I was very proud of our team and the execution of the game plan in that area."
UMass held De'Angelo Alexander to just one second-half point and 13 in the game. Goldwire never got comfortable offensively either and finished with 11.
"We did a good job taking the game away from Goldwire and Alexander," Ford said. "We said if the other guys on the team beat us, fine, just don't let those big two get hot."
While the perimeter defense stifled the guards, Stephane Lasme made sure the 49ers didn't get too comfortable down low, either.
Lasme blocked a reverse layup attempt by Alexander at the 16:44 mark of the second half to break Marcus Camby's UMass career record of 336 blocked shots.
"I wasn't thinking about it when I came to UMass," Lasme said of the record. "It wasn't one of my goals, but it's great to break it."
Lasme finished with three blocks, but his presence in the lane altered countless attempts by the Niners.
On one possession, Charlotte forward Jerell Jamison launched an attempt from the left side of the rim that barely caught the top right corner of the backboard in an attempt to shoot over the 6-8 forward.
"The players brought (the record) up in the locker room before I even did," Ford said of Lasme's record. "To bypass one of the great college basketball players of all time, Marcus Camby, it's incredible."

HARLOTTE, N.C. -- When University of Massachusetts senior tricaptain Stephane Lasme came to the United States from Gabon, Africa, he couldn't speak a word of English.
Now, in his last season as a Minuteman, he is an NBA prospect and the career blocked shots leader in UMass history.
"I wasn't thinking about [the blocks record] when I came to UMass," Lasme said. "But it's great to break it. It's a great feeling."
"When I got to UMass, [Lasme] really wasn't on the radar a whole lot," UMass coach Travis Ford said. "We told him, 'You don't realize how good you are, Stephane. You have no idea.' "
Lasme passed Marcus Camby in career blocks as the Minutemen defeated Charlotte, 66-61, yesterday in an Atlantic 10 battle in which bodies hit the floor as much as basketballs.
"We really, really, really needed that win," Lasme said. "We needed that win more than they did, I think."
Lasme entered the game tied with Camby at 336 blocks and passed him with three. He added 12 points and nine rebounds in the win, even though a little early foul trouble caused him to sit for much of the first half.
The Minutemen (15-6, 5-2) came out on the wrong side of a game-opening 11-3 run, and spent the majority of the afternoon trying to catch the 49ers. UMass finally pulled itself back in the game and took the lead after a Lasme deuce produced a 35-34 advantage just under three minutes into the second half.
From there it went back and forth. Charlotte (8-11, 2-5) answered the Minutemen's run with a 6-0 run, mixed in with a high-flying jam from big man E.J. Drayton, who slammed it home with the foul for a 38-35 Charlotte lead.
Drayton finished with a hard-earned 16 points and 13 rebounds against the dominating duo of Lasme -- first in the nation in blocks this season with 108 -- and fellow captain Rashaun Freeman, who leads the Minutemen in scoring with 17.1 points per game. Freeman finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
"[Lasme] is a great shot blocker," Drayton said. "He is really a great player."
For UMass, it all started on the defensive end. Charlotte is notoriously lethal from 3-point land with two guards -- junior Leemire Goldwire and senior De'Angelo Alexander -- who can light up the scoreboard in a hurry.
Ford's main objective was to prevent the 49ers from taking threes, and UMass held Charlotte to just 16 attempts from downtown, 13 below its average. Alexander finished with 13 points and Goldwire had 11 -- both totals short of their season averages.
"I didn't want to play with fire," said Ford about Charlotte's long-range attack. "I was very proud of our team in the execution of the game plan in that area.
"It's just so hard to win on the road in this league, and we're just happy to get a win."
UMass took control with a timely 8-0 early second-half run that began with a Chris Lowe 3-pointer with the Minutemen trailing, 42-39. Junior Etienne Brower hit a three, and Freeman added a nifty hook shot to push the lead to 5.
The Minutemen held onto the lead until the 3:18 mark, when Drayton put in a layup to tie the game at 55. But junior Gary Forbes (13 points) took advantage of some slow-to-get-back 49ers and hit a layup (with the foul) with just under a minute to go. Forbes made the free throw for the 63-58 lead, and the Minutemen held on.
"Our defense in the second half I thought was the difference in the game," Ford said. "Our team showed a lot of resiliency."
In the first half, the 49ers shot 4 for 8 from beyond the arc. In the second half, they went 2 for 8.
The Minutemen, usually solid from 3-point range, limped to a 31.3 percentage (5 of 16).
UMass has had its struggles from the free throw line lately, and that came back to hurt the Minutemen in losses to Miami and Rhode Island. The percentage wasn't great yesterday (59.1, 13 for 22), but the Minutemen knocked them down when the game was on the line, including a pair from Lowe with 21.7 seconds left that gave UMass a 4-point cushion.
he Charlotte 49ers were one official's call away from perhaps their biggest win of the season.
Considering how this season has gone, that's probably not much of a surprise.
Instead of a stirring comeback, the 49ers were left with a 66-61 loss on Sunday to Atlantic 10 rival Massachusetts at Halton Arena, Charlotte's third straight defeat and its longest losing streak of the season.
Late in the game, after coming back from a seven-point deficit, Charlotte found itself in excellent position.
Leemire Goldwire hit his only 3-pointer with 28.4 seconds to play, cutting the Minutemen's lead to 63-61. On the inbounds play, UMass forward Etienne Brower was trapped along the sideline by Charlotte freshman Ian Andersen. Brower ended up on one foot leaning toward the sideline and signaled a timeout.
Official D.J. Carstensen whistled to stop play but did not signal a call. NCAA rules do not allow timeouts to be called by players if their momentum forces them out of bounds.
Carstensen spoke briefly with Andersen before meeting with the other two officials, Jeff Clark and Mike Eades.
After that conversation, Carstensen signaled Massachusetts had called timeout, which left Charlotte coach Bobby Lutz -- and the Charlotte fans -- irate.
Chris Lowe was fouled on the Minutemen's next inbounds play and hit both free throws, giving UMass a 65-61 lead with 21.7 seconds left.
So what did the official say to Andersen at the time of the call?
"The player called the timeout. But the ref was right there and said, `No. No. No. No timeout.' The other refs came over, and I guess their reasoning was they thought I had fouled him. I did bump him, but they didn't call the foul," Andersen said.
"I thought they were going to give (the ball) back to us as a turnover, but then they made the switch."
Lutz thought it was clear Brower traveled with the ball, or at least did not signal a timeout before he was falling out of bounds.
"They said to me they had a timeout before he fell out of bounds. You'd need to ask their representative," Lutz said when asked about the call. "I thought the guy traveled regardless of the timeout on the baseline."
The 49ers (8-11, 2-5) took a 16-point lead in the first half, before Massachusetts cut the deficit to three, 32-29, at halftime.
Charlotte went down seven, 54-47 with 6:27 left, but used an 8-1 run to tie the score at 55 with 3:20 remaining. Gary Forbes scored four of Massachusetts' next eight points, and the Minutemen (15-6, 5-2) led by two when the timeout was called.
"It's really disappointing, obviously, when you continue to lose close games," Lutz said. "I think we're playing hard enough, I just think we just have to work harder on execution on both ends of the floor. It's not lack of effort.
tephane Lasme doesn't have quite the name recognition of former Massachusetts star Marcus Camby, now an NBA player.
He does, however, have the statistics.
Lasme, a 6-foot-8, 215-pound senior forward with extraordinary shot-blocking ability, broke the UMass career record for blocked shots Sunday, blocking three in a 66-61 win against Charlotte. That gave him 339 for his career, three more than Camby's previous school record.
Lasme has 108 blocks this season, tying the mark he set last season that was second most at UMass. He needs 21 more to own the season record.
"We congratulated him. The players brought it up even before I did in the locker room," UMass coach Travis Ford said. "To pass one of the greatest college basketball players of all time in Marcus Camby is incredible."
Ford said he had a difficult time convincing Lasme he could be just as dominating a player for the Minutemen as fellow senior Rashaun Freeman, who leads the team in scoring at 17.1 points per game.
"I told Stephane, `You have no idea how good you are.' He is always played Robin to Rashaun's Batman. He is the biggest supporter of Rashaun there is," Ford said.
"I think both these guys can dominate, not just one, and I think Stephane has finally developed that mindset this year."
