UMass trying to shake Rose Hill woes
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 2/15/2007

BRONX, N.Y. - Tonight is a trip home as well as a trip to the site of some unpleasant memories for the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team.

Rose Hill Gymnasium at Fordham is usually more noted for its age (82) and history than as a difficult place for opponents to win, but it has been a bad spot for the Minutemen in recent years. The Rams have struggled almost everywhere since joining the Atlantic 10, but they have beaten UMass in their last four meetings in the Bronx.

Tonight's game figures to be tougher because this is the best Fordham team since the school joined the conference in 1995. The teams play at 9 tonight and the game will be televised on ESPN2.

Ending their Rose Hill woes is secondary to just winning a game for the Minutemen (17-7, 7-3 A-10), who cannot afford a loss anywhere in a tight conference race.

"I think every game at this point is a must win," UMass coach Travis Ford said. "It's not do-or-die, but we're still trying to figure out how to win the league. If you want to stay up in the top, you have to keep winning."

Only two current Minutemen, Rashaun Freeman and Stephane Lasme, have played at Rose Hill as college players. However, several UMass players are familiar with the old gym.

Chris Lowe, Dante Milligan and Gary Forbes all grew up in or near the city, while Etienne Brower and walk-on Mike Sinn are from nearby Long Island. The gym hosts high school tournament games every year.

And while Ford's Kentucky roots are well established, his staff is almost entirely New Yorkers. Steve Middleton shares Forbes' Brooklyn roots, while Tim Maloney, Adam Ginsburg and James Altman are all from Long Island.

The game is expected to sell out and tickets allotted to UMass have been hard to come by because Minutemen players and coaches have scrambled to find them for friends and family.

"I'm really looking forward to it. Going against kids I know from high school," said Chris Lowe, who played against Rams Chris Bethel, David Boykin and Bryant Dunston. "There might be as many UMass people as Fordham people."

Fordham is 13-10 and 6-5 in the Atlantic 10. The Rams are 4-8 away from home, but 9-2 at Rose Hill. They head into this one on a three-game losing streak after back-to-back losses on the road to Dayton and Charlotte and a defeat at home by Rhode Island.

This is a rare conference game for UMass against a team with a similarly constructed lineup. Fordham features two true big men in Dunston, who is averaging 13.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game, and Sebastian Greene, who has emerged this year with 10 points and 5.8 rebounds.

"We probably match up with them a little better than we did against Temple," Ford said. The Owls defeated Umass Sunday 98-89.

Junior Marcus Stout will try to become the latest guard to put up big scoring numbers against UMass. He leads the Rams with 15.1 points per game.

"They play great defense, very disciplined scrappy aggressive defense," Ford said. "They're disciplined on offense. They will fast break on you, but they can run their offense over and over again, They usually don't beat themselves a whole lot."

Lowe said Fordham's stature has risen in the city. "Fordham has much more respect than they did because of Coach (Dereck) Whittenburg," Lowe said. "He's a great coach."

NOTES: Milligan is celebrating his 23rd birthday today. ... Lasme needs nine blocked shots to move into the NCAA's top 25 all-time blocks list. ... Freeman needs eight rebounds to pass Horace Neysmith (935) and move into the No. 3 spot on the UMass career list. ... UMass is 5-5 in televised games this year, but 0-1 on the ESPN network.

New York native grabs career-high 11 rebounds, scores nine points in win
From UMass Athletics, 2/15/2007

BRONX, N.Y. - Two unlikely heroes emerged as UMass won at Fordham for the first time in seven years, 74-59 on Thursday night at Rose Hill Gym. Senior Brandon Thomas scored a season-high 12 points while Dante Milligan, playing on his 23rd birthday, had nine points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Senior Stephane Lasme a game-high 18 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocked shots.

The Minutemen improved to 18-7 overall and 8-3 in the Atlantic 10, just one-half game behind Rhode Island (9-3) in the league standings. Fordham lost its fourth game in a row and stands at 13-11 overall, 6-6 in the league.

UMass took over in the second half as they outscored the Rams, 44-32. Lasme had 12 in the half while Gary Forbes scored all 11 of his points in the period. The Minutemen opened the half outscoring Fordham 26-9 to go up by 20 points at 56-36 with 7:27 left in the game on a Milligan lay-up.

UMass held a 30-27 lead at halftime after a 20 ragged minutes of basketball. Thomas had seven points to lead UMass in the first half. The Minutemen shot just 35.5 percent from the floor while the Rams were just 25.7 percent in the half. UMass outrebounded Fordham, 26-14, in the first half with Lasme grabbing seven and Dante Milligan corralling six.

The Minutemen held the Rams scoreless spanning 8:08 as the Minutemen went on a 16-0 run with Thomas hitting a lay-up and 3-pointer put UMass ahead 11-6 with 8:55 left in the first. The Minutemen built the lead to 18-6 on a James Life 3-pointer with 7:22 left in the half.

UMass started off cold as the air in New York City, missing 11 of their first 12 shots and trailing 6-4 through the first 10 minutes of the game.

The Minutemen wrap up their three-game road swing at Dayton on Sunday at 2 p.m. The game will be on the CSTV Networks including TV38 in Massachusetts.

UMass drubs Rams
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 2/16/2007

BRONX, N.Y. - In less hostile atmospheres against worse Fordham teams the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team couldn't win at Rose Hill Gymnasium. But in a game that UMass coach Travis Ford called a must win, the Minutemen delivered its best road effort in a while and defeated the Rams 74-59 Thursday.

The win ended five-game, seven-year losing streak by UMass in the Bronx.

"I'm very proud of my basketball team," Minuteman coach Travis Ford said. "To respond in a hostile environment against a good Fordham team. I was proud we were able to survive."

Playing on his 23rd birthday on national television in his hometown, UMass junior reserve big man Dante Milligan delivered his best game of the season. He came in midway through the first half when Rashaun Freeman picked up his second foul and Milligan had six of his career-high 11 rebounds in the first half and added nine points.

"I couldn't have asked for a better birthday gift," said Milligan, who was serenaded with "Happy Birthday" by friends and family after the game. "To come back home, see my family, get good minutes, produce and get a win on national TV. I couldn't ask for a better birthday than that."

Ford said, "Dante deserves success. He's a tremendous person. He hasn't complained when he doesn't play. He's accepted his role. I told him, when you're called on you have to be ready to play. He played great."

Brandon Thomas, who began his college career not far away at Long Island University in Brooklyn, has seen his minutes reduced as other wings have played well for UMass. But Thomas had a triumphant return to New York as well. With Gary Forbes plagued by foul trouble, Thomas got a chance to play and took advantage. He had a season-high 12 points, four rebounds and assists.

Stephane Lasme added 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Forbes scored 11 points.

Bryant Dunston led Fordham with 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Brenton Butler added 14.

The Minutemen (18-7, 8-3 Atlantic 10) finish their three-game road stretch at 2 p.m. Sunday at Dayton. Fordham (13-11, 6-6 A-10) hosts Duquesne at noon Sunday.

Leading 30-27 at halftime, UMass delivered a knockout blow right away. Forbes, who was scoreless in the first half, led a 16-4 surge that made it 46-31. Consecutive baskets by Milligan stretched the lead to 20 at 61-41, effectively finishing off the Rams, who dropped their third straight. Freeman fouled out late, but it didn't matter.

UMass started slowly and didn't make a field goal until five minutes into the game after missing five shots. But strong defense helped overcome the shooting struggles and several early turnovers as the Minutemen trailed by just 6-4.

Whatever UMass coach Travis Ford said at the television time-out with 11 minutes, 23 seconds remaining worked because the Minutemen scored 14 straight points to take an 18-6 lead.

Fordham battled back, making five 3-pointers to bring its almost capacity crowd back to life. The two teams traded blows late in the half as UMass took a 30-27 edge to intermission.

"I knew we were going to win this game," Milligan said. "We were upset after the Temple game (a 98-89 loss Sunday) and needed somebody to take it out on."

UMass within striking distance
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 2/16/2007

BRONX, N.Y. - The University of Massachusetts kept pace in a tight Atlantic 10 race with Thursday's win over Fordham which moved the Minutemen to 8-3 (18-7 overall).

That put them in a tie with Xavier for second place in the conference, just a half game behind Rhode Island (9-3), which has played one more game than UMass and the Musketeers.

The win also kept the Minutemen two games ahead of the fifth-place logjam. The two four teams get a bye in the Atlantic 10 Tournament which begins March 7 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

If UMass can keep winning, it will have a chance to make up some ground next week when Rhode Island and Xavier play each other Wednesday in Cincinnati.

THEY LOVE NEW YORK Three Minuteman players who grew up in the New York metropolitan area made their only trip to the city this season. Gary Forbes was UMass' highest scoring New Yorker with 11 points, while Dante Milligan added nine points and Chris Lowe added seven.

Etienne Brower, who hails from Long Island had one turnover, one foul and missed one shot in one minute of action.

NEXT UP - The Minutemen complete their three-game road trip at 2 p.m. Sunday at Dayton. The Flyers were idle during the middle of the week and are 16-8 overall and 6-5 in conference play. UMass is trying to become the first team to beat them at UD Arena this year, as Dayton is 14-0 at home.

Junior Brian Roberts leads the Flyers with 18.5 points per game, which puts him second in the league.

STREAK SNAPPED - The Minutemen snapped their four-game losing streak at Rose Hill Gymanasium, where UMass had not won in nearly seven years. The Minutemen last beat the Rams there 81-72 Feb. 16, 2000.

FORD TECHNICAL - Four days after benching James Life for getting a technical foul, UMass coach Travis Ford picked up his first of the season with 4 minutes, 31 seconds left in the first half.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION - Milligan, a junior who transferred to UMass from Pittsburgh, celebrated his 23rd birthday Thursday. He went into the game excited.

"It's a big day for me going back home having a game on national TV on my birthday," Milligan said Tuesday. "It's everything I could want."

Milligan, who was averaging 2.4 points and 1.5 rebounds in 7.6 minutes per game entering Thursday's tilt, has usually been the Minutemen's first big man off the bench. He has played better lately, averaging 5 points and 1.8 rebounds in the three games leading up to Fordham. He said some of the improvement has come from a change in approach.

"I decided I might as well just make the most of whatever minutes I get and not to put too much pressure on myself and just just play pressure-free basketball," Milligan said. "Since I've been going into games with that attitude, I've been playing better on the court. Before, every time I was on the court I was trying not to make a mistake so Coach Ford wouldn't take me out. I've erased that mind-set and it's helped me perform better."

Milligan, who will likely play a larger role next year when Rashaun Freeman and Stephane Lasme graduate, believes that he can play better than he's shown at UMass.

"I feel like I can be better with more playing time. I've performed well pretty consistently, but I haven't played those kind of minutes in games," Milligan said. "Right now I'm comfortable. Of course I wish I was playing more, but as long as we're winning games."

BACK-TO-BACK BONNERS - The Minutemen's game followed a women's game on ESPN2 between Maryland and Florida State. Luke Bonner's older sister Becky is the assistant director of basketball operations on the Maryland staff.

MISCELLANEOUS - Scouts representing 12 NBA franchises were in attendance to watch Freeman and Lasme.

Forbes wore assistant coach Steve Middleton's shoes for the second straight game. Forbes scored 31 in those shoes at Temple Sunday after a luggage mix-up, so he decided to wear them again.

Fordham can't topple UMass
By Pat Reichart, The New York Post Staff Writer, 2/16/2007

It's officially gut-check time for Fordham. The Rams, who were 13-7 and near the top in the Atlantic Ten just two weeks ago, have lost four straight decisions, the latest a 74-59 defeat to Massachusetts last night at Rose Hill Gymnasium in the Bronx. The Rams are now 13-11 (6-6 Atlantic 10) with four regular season games remaining.

"The leadership, the toughness, the defense, the rebounding - all the fundamental things that we need to take the next step to beat good teams - we can't do it this year," Rams head coach Dereck Whittenburg said.

In a relatively weak year for the Atlantic 10, Fordham entered the season with high hopes of establishing itself as a force to be reckoned with in the conference. After advancing to the semifinals of the conference tournament last March, qualifying for the NIT or NCAA tournament seemed a reachable goal for a maturing Fordham team. The Rams haven't reached the postseason since 1992.

"We've still made tremendous progress," Whittenburg said. "But we can't even think about that. This team is not mentally ready to handle that."

The game was sloppy at the start; both teams seemingly were rattled by a frenzied sellout crowd. With the score tied at 6-6 midway through the first half, the Minutemen (18-7, 8-3) went on an impressive run, outscoring the Rams 9-0 over a 1:28 span.

Marred by poor perimeter shooting and an inability to penetrate the Minutemen's interior defense, Fordham took advantage of a sloppy UMass offense the battle back and tie the game, 26-26, on a floater by Brenton Butler (6 of 13, 14 points) with two minutes to play in the first half.

Leading 30-27 at halftime, UMass opened the second half with a 14-4 run, and Fordham's last-ditch effort - switching to a full-court defense - only exacerbated the Rams' woes. The Minutemen outscored the Rams by 12 in the second half, and cruised to victory in a game that wasn't near as close as the final score would indicate.

"In the second half, we just totally folded," said Whittenburg, whose team next hosts Duquesne on Sunday. "We didn't rebound the ball at all, and our defense just totally broke down."

Back on Track
Bench players Thomas, Milligan lead Minutemen over Rams
By Danny Picard, The Daily Collegian Staff, 2/16/2007

BRONX, N.Y. - Brandon Thomas and Dante Milligan haven't played significant minutes this season, but they stepped up when the Massachusetts men's basketball team needed them most, leading UMass to a 74-59 win over Fordham (13-11, 6-6 A-10).

Thomas and Milligan came off the bench and provided UMass (18-7, 8-3 A-10) with 21 points and 15 rebounds combined - none more important than their second-half play.

"We got a lot of help off the bench, and that might have been the difference for us," UMass coach Travis Ford said. "We've had some good bench play, but a lot of times it doesn't show up in the stat sheet.

"Tonight it showed up in the stat sheet, from Dante Milligan to Brandon Thomas. They actually put up some results with the hard work, and I thought that was very, very big for our basketball team."

The Minutemen went into halftime with only a 30-27 lead. A 24-9 run in the first 12 minutes of the second half gave UMass a commanding lead that silenced a loud and untamed Fordham student section.

"To respond in a very hostile environment, I'm proud that we were just able to survive," Ford said. "I knew it was going to be loud, but I didn't realize I wouldn't even be able to talk to my team before the game down in the locker room because they couldn't hear me."

With junior Gary Forbes and senior captain Rashaun Freeman in foul trouble, Thomas and Milligan carried the Maroon and White past a Fordham team it needed to beat, especially after coming off a loss to sub-par Temple squad on Sunday.

Milligan finished the game with nine points and 11 rebounds, while Thomas had 12 points and four rebounds.

Needless to say, it was a great birthday present for Milligan.

"Dante deserves success, there's no question," Ford said. "He's a tremendous person who has never complained one single time when he doesn't play. He just accepts his role.

"I told him, 'When you're called upon you have to be ready to play.' And tonight we needed him big time, and he stepped up."

It's hard to believe a total of 57 points were scored in the first half. The score was only 6-6 after the first 10 minutes of the game, with sloppy play coming from both sides.

Neither team could convert on the offensive end, and two 3-pointers from Fordham's Bryant Dunston and Marcus Stout early on gave the Rams a 6-2 lead. Both teams tried to go for the big play early on, but missed lay-ups and dunks went back and forth until the UMass bench alone went on an 11-0 run.

"In the second half we just totally folded," Fordham coach Dereck Whittenburg said. "[UMass] made shots, and we didn't make any shots. We bobbled the ball. We just couldn't make a play."

Freshman Ricky Harris hit a desperation jumper to tie the game at 6-apiece, followed with baskets by Thomas, Milligan and freshman Chris Lowe.

Senior James Life hit a 3-pointer with 7:33 left in the first half, which gave UMass its largest lead in the first 20 minutes at 18-6, but Fordham crawled back into the game and tied it at 26. Life hit another 3-pointer with 1:30 remaining to give the Minutemen a lead they'd never lose.

UMass got the usual double-double out of Stephane Lasme - 18 points and 10 rebounds - while Forbes finished with 11 points.

Dunston (18 points) and Brenton Butler (14 points) were the only Fordham players in double-figures.

The Minutemen had 44 points in the paint, as opposed to the Rams' 14.
