Billikens visit Mullins Center
By Danny Picard, The Daily Collegian Staff, 2/23/2007

When preseason polls were finalized, the Saint Louis Billikens were projected to finish third in the Atlantic 10. The Xavier Musketeers and the Massachusetts men's basketball team were picked to be the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the conference, respectively.

With only a few games left in the regular season, the voters got the top two teams correct. Saint Louis, however, didn't live up to the expectations in A-10 play.

UMass (20-7, 10-3 A-10) hosts the seventh-place Billikens (17-10, 7-6 A-10) tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at the Mullins Center in the second-to-last home game of the season.

UMass moved into a tie with Xavier for first place on Wednesday night with an 83-44 win over St. Bonaventure. Also helping the cause was the Musketeers' win over Rhode Island that same night, dropping the Rams from first to third.

Saint Louis comes into Amherst on a two-game winning streak. The Billikens have had their ups and downs this season. They've beaten most of the upper-echelon of A-10 teams in Rhode Island, Xavier and George Washington, but have also suffered losses to struggling teams like St. Bonaventure, Temple and Duquesne.

UMass coach Travis Ford can't figure it out.

"I've watched [Saint Louis] a lot on tape when we're scouting other teams, and this is a very talented, well-rounded basketball team," Ford said. "They beat some very good teams in our league, and they beat some very good teams overall this year.

"They're one of the most dangerous teams in our league because if you look at their record they can sneak up on you," he added. "But if you understand who they are, they should not sneak up on anybody."

Saint Louis is coming off wins against La Salle and Dayton, thanks to the stellar play of Kevin Lisch. The sophomore guard scored 24 points against La Salle and 22 points against Dayton. Lisch is the Billikens' second-leading scorer, averaging 14.8 points per game.

Sophomore guard Tommie Liddell leads Saint Louis in scoring with 16 points per game. He is also the team's best 3-point shooter, hitting 50 percent (487-for-94) of his shots from behind the arc.

The Minutemen also can't overlook the presence of 6-foot-10 big man Ian Vouyoukas, who leads the Billikens in rebounding (7.1 boards per game) and blocks (52).

"They've got three players in Lisch, Liddell and Vouyoukas who are as good as any three players in our league," Ford said. "I really believe that. They're that good."

Those three combined make for a dangerous team on paper. It just hasn't been consistent within the A-10.

UMass looks to record its second four-game winning streak of the season against Saint Louis. The last time the Minutemen won more than three in a row was back on Nov. 28 at Savannah State.

Wednesday night's blowout over St. Bonaventure made this year's Minutemen the 13th team in school history to post 20 wins in a season. The last time they did it was in 1997-98 when they finished 21-11. That was also the last year UMass advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

With three games left, these Minutemen don't plan on stopping there.

"It was one of our goals to get 20 wins or more," senior Stephane Lasme said after Wednesday night's win. "But I'm not ready to just stop winning right now. I want to get as many as I can."

They are going to need more than 20 wins to advance to the field of 65. And whether history repeats itself can only be answered in Atlantic City.

UMass eyeing A-10 title
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 2/24/2007

AMHERST - The scenario will likely remain the same until the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team loses or the regular season ends. If the Minutemen win, they stay in the hunt for a least a share of the Atlantic 10 regular season championship. Lose and that title becomes much harder to achieve.

A win in any of their final three games, beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday against Saint Louis at the Mullins Center, would assure UMass (20-7, 10-3 Atlantic 10) of finishing no lower than fourth in the conference. That would guarantee a bye in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament which begins March 7.

While the Minuteman players and coaching staff claim not to be scoreboard watching, Xavier's game at Dayton at 6 p.m. Saturday figures to hold some interest. UMass and the Musketeers are tied for first place at 10-3.

Senior guard James Life said the Minutemen are taking the approach that winning will take care of everything else.

"I think guys understand. We weren't too excited about (Wednesday's) win," he said. "People see the big picture. I think we're pretty focused."

Saint Louis arrives in Amherst at 17-10 overall and is tied for sixth place in the A-10 at 7-6. The Billikens were picked by a lot of people to contend for the Atlantic 10 title, and were 10-4 in nonconference play with respectable losses and good wins over Missouri State and Mississippi. But they opened league play with surprising defeats at the hands of St. Bonaventure and Duquesne and have never regained consistency.

Saint Louis will try to extend its winning streak to three games after beating La Salle and Dayton at home. It has struggled on the road going 3-8 (1-5 A-10).

Senior big man Ian Vouyoukas has been part of the inconsistency. He's been up and down this season while averaging 11 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.93 blocked shots.

The Billiken sophomore guards have picked up where they left off after strong rookie seasons. Tommie Liddell leads Saint Louis with 16 points and 7.1 rebounds per game, while Kevin Lisch is next at 14.8 points per game.

"They are as good a guard combination as there is in our league. I like Liddell's size and that he can shoot off the dribble and off the catch. He averages seven rebounds a game. He's very complete," UMass coach Travis Ford said.

Life, who will spend time guarding Liddell or Lisch, is in a bit of a shooting slump going 8-for-35 (22.9 percent) from 3-point range in the last seven games. He said he wasn't worried about the slump and was focusing on helping to contain the Billiken guards.

"Hopefully I can pick it up right around the A-10 Tournament and I can get on a roll and hit a lot of shots. Hopefully it will come at a big time," Life said. "I'm not in a big rush for it to come back. I'm just going to continue to do what I do. We haven't needed it lately.

"I like to play defense and I want to stay in the game," Life added. "I can change the game totally on the defensive end. It's fun because it's a challenge. I like to frustrate guys and I like to get steals. I look forward to coming out and try to lock them up. Everyone wants to make shots, but if you're not making them it's not the end of the world."

Ford agreed.

"If we were losing, it might be a concern, but he's had a couple off nights when we're winning," said Ford, who pointed out that UMass is 6-1 during Life's slump. "He'll catch back on sooner or later. As long as he continues to play defense, that's all I care about."

NOTES: UMass senior big man Stephane Lasme is one of only two players who currently ranks in the top 25 nationally in three major statistical categories: blocks per game (second at 5), rebounding (21st, 9.4) and field goal percentage (eighth, 63.3). The other is Ohio State freshman star Greg Oden who is sixth in blocks (3.5), 12th in rebounding (9.7) and 15th in field goal percentage (61.3).

Lasme needs seven blocks to catch No. 22 Pervis Ellison (374) and eight to tie No. 21 Jason Lawson (375) on the NCAA career chart.

Last Minute Heroics From Forbes, Life Lift UMass Past Saint Louis, 53-50
Life hits three-pointer and two free throws in final 1:38; Forbes has steal and two free throws to ice game in final six seconds
From UMass Athletics, 2/24/2007

AMHERST, Mass. - It took some last minute heroics from Gary Forbes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and James Life (Fort Myers, Fla.), but UMass was able to withstand Saint Louis 53-50 on Saturday night in front of a near sellout crowd of 9,088. Life nailed a three-pointer and hit two free throws and Forbes iced the game stealing the ball away from Billikens guard Tommie Liddell with 6.5 seconds remaining and then hitting two more free throws to give the final score.

UMass improves to 21-7 overall and 11-3 in the Atlantic 10, while Saint Louis drops to 17-11 overall and 7-7 in the league. UMass remains tied with Xavier for first-place in the conference standings after the Musketeers defeated Dayton earlier Saturday.

After a sluggish first half, UMass went on an 11-to-4 run early in the second half to go up 33-26. The Billikens fought back and a pair of consecutive three-pointers from Luke Meyer and Kevin Lisch cut the lead to two points, 39-37 with 10:27 remaining.

Despite a foot injury that kept him out of practice the past week, Saint Louis' leading scorer Liddell played in the game and his fast break lay-up with 2:13 to go gave the Billikens a 47-46 lead.

However, a Liddell turnover on the next SLU possession, one of 18 on the night for the Billikens, gave UMass the ball and Forbes found an open Life who drained a 28-foot trey from just behind the left arc.

SLU bigman Ian Vouyoukas kept Saint Louis in the game with turn-around hook shot on the next possession that drew the fifth foul on senior Rashaun Freeman with 25.9 seconds left to tie the game at 49 each. The 6-foot, 10 inch, 270 pound Vouyoukas hit the free throw despite the UMass timeout to freeze him.

Two more free throws by Life gave UMass the lead once again before Forbes stole the ball from Liddell with 6.5 seconds remaining just past half court. Forbes drove straight to the basket but was fouled on the way up and missed the lay-in with 1.9 seconds to go. The only UMass player to finish the night in double-figures, Forbes converted both free throws and Dante Milligan (New York, N.Y.) stole the SLU inbounds pass to seal the game.

Forbes finished with a team-high 13 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists. Stephane Lasme had nine points and nine rebounds, whie Chris Lowe (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) also added nine points.

Vouyoukas led the Billikens with a game-high 18 points, while Lisch scored 10.

UMass committed a season-low nine turnovers on the night while forcing 18 from Saint Louis.

The Minutemen close out their 2006-07 home schedule this Wednesday night when they host La Salle at 7 p.m. Prior to that game UMass will honor its 2007 senior class.

Post-game notes
From UMass Athletics, 2/24/2007

UMass had its lowest point total of the season with 53 and also its fewest points in a game since scoring 44 against La Salle last February. It was the fewest points in a win since beating Rhode Island, 49-44 on Feb. 9, 2004.

* UMass had a season-low nine turnovers, but shot a season-low 29.5 percent in the 53-50 win.

* The crowd of 9,088 marked the second crowd of more than 9,000 this season, as the Boston College game on Dec. 2 was a sell out. The last time there were two crowds of more than 9,000 at the Mullins Center was in the 1998-99 season, when the Minutemen sold out the Kansas and UConn games that season.

* The crowd of 9,088 is the largest for an A-10 home game since Feb. 17, 2001, a sell-out of 9,493 against Temple.

* Gary Forbes reached double-figures for the 22nd time this season and 13th time in his last 15 games with 13. Forbes is averaging 16.0 points in those games.

* Rashaun Freeman grabbed eight of his game-high 12 rebounds in the first half. It was Freeman's 13th game this season with double-figures rebounds. In his career, he now has 45 game with 10 or more rebounds.

* UMass had its worst shooting half of the season in the first half at 21.9. The previous low was 34.3 at Temple on Feb. 11.

UMass Head Coach Travis Ford
On tonight's win:
"Well, it wasn't a pretty game, but I'm just excited we won. Saint Louis came in and they had a great game plan. They took away our posts and some of our driving lanes. We needed to be a little more patient but we weren't patient enough. Obviously we didn't shoot the ball well, which you need to when they're playing that well on defense. We had opportunities to score but we just couldn't put the ball down. We never really got comfortable playing against their defense but again we're just glad we won the game plain and simple."

On the similarities to last year's game:
"The defense was good most of the night. It was very, very good. We got in foul trouble with Stephane [Lasme] and Rashaun [Freeman] again. It was very eerie to last year's game. The game was almost identical to last year's loss at Saint Louis, except for the score. I mean if you weren't there that game, then this was a carbon copy."

On James Life's play:
"He had a look on his face the last couple minutes like "I haven't done much the last few minutes, but I'm going to do something here" and he went out and did it.

UMass junior forward Gary Forbes
On the team's preparation for Saint Louis:
"Coach [Travis] Ford kept telling us that Saint Louis had beaten the top four teams in the league, aside from us and that they would be coming in here to try to steal one from us. They're a really good team at home and on the road so it's definitely a good win for us."

UMass senior forward Stephane Lasme
On the team's play:
"We were just trying to figure out how to win the game. We showed that we're still a team and we stick together no matter what. I'm proud of my team. I'm just happy we won that game, after that tough loss last year."

On playing against Saint Louis' big men:
"It was kind of tough in the beginning but I got used to it. We should be ready for them after playing against Pittsburgh center Aaron Gray."

UMass senior guard James Life On hitting the go-ahead three pointer:
"We weren't hitting shots. We were really struggling and so I came into the huddle and said, `I'm tired of this. I'm about to start hitting shots.' And so I went out and hit it."

"It felt good to hit that three pointer. I'm due for it. I'm about 0-50 in my last five games. It's a lot of pressure shooting at the end of the game but it felt good."

Saint Louis Head Coach Brad Soderberg
On Saint Louis' game plan:
"We had our game plan and executed it really well. If someone had said to be before the game that the game would have the amount of points tonight, I would have been happy and would have liked our chances."

On UMass' season:
"I have a lot of respect for what Travis Ford has done. It's been a remarkable turnaround in the time since last year's game."

On UMass forward Stephane Lasme and center Rashaun Freeman:
"Stephane and Ray are incredible around the basket. I had our big guys sag off them to give us better position to get rebounds. Our game plan was fine, I was just disappointed in how the game turned out."

Minutemen show true grit
Forbes steals one from Saint Louis
By Marty Dobrow, The Boston Globe Correspondent, 2/25/2007

AMHERST - Call this one deja new.

A year ago, Tommie Liddell of Saint Louis hit a shot with 1.5 seconds left to lift the Billikens to a 50-48 victory over the University of Massachusetts in a defensive struggle in the nation's midsection.

Last night, Liddell had the ball again at crunch time with the clock ticking down under five seconds and UMass clinging to a 51-50 lead after a grind-fest at the Mullins Center. As Luke Meyer came out to set a screen, Liddell started a crossover dribble to make his move toward the hoop. He never got close.

Gary Forbes anticipated the move perfectly, and swiped the ball away. The UMass junior then thundered in to the hoop, where he was fouled hard by Meyer with 1.9 seconds left. Forbes sank both free throws, and Dante Milligan intercepted the ensuing length-of-the-court heave as the Minutemen escaped with a 53-50 victory before an almost-capacity crowd of 9,088.

"It was textbook playground basketball," said Forbes, who led UMass with 13 points. "I knew he was going to try to cross over. I just had my hands in the right place at the right time."

UMass improved to 21-7, and held on to a share of the Atlantic 10 lead with Xavier, a 75-67 winner at Dayton. Both teams are 11-3 in the league with two games left to play.

Nothing was easy about this one, but UMass was able to close a fierce struggle with an artistic finish thanks to Forbes and James Life.

After Saint Louis (17-11, 7-7) took its first lead of the second half on a Liddell reverse with 2:13 remaining, Life uncorked a 3-pointer from the right wing at 1:38 for a 49-47 lead. Life had been 0 for 6 overall to that point, including 0 for 4 from long range. That came on the heels of 12-for-44 shooting in his last seven games (8 for 35 from behind the arc).

"I knew it was going in, honest to God," Life said. "I was due for something. I was like 0 for 50 the last five games."

Saint Louis responded, however. After both teams were unable to convert possessions, the Billikens got the ball inside to center Ian Vouyoukas, who powered his way through Rashaun Freeman for a basket and a foul with 25.9 seconds left. The foul was Freeman's fifth, ending a night of frustration for the UMass scoring leader, who was held to just 4 points.

Despite Life's admitted trash-talking in the lane, Vouyoukas (game-high 18 points) hit the free throw to give the Billikens a 50-49 lead.

Life then worked his way into the lane and got fouled by Liddell with 15.6 seconds remaining. He tuned out the touché trash-talking at the other end, and sank both shots around the edges of a Saint Louis timeout.

That set the stage for Forbes's heroics.

UMass won despite shooting an anemic 29.5 percent from the field. The Minutemen's vaunted frontcourt of Freeman and Stephane Lasme (9 points) was shut down, and there wasn't a lot of perimeter help available. UMass won on the strength of gritty defense and virtually turnover-free basketball (just nine) -- a big improvement in an area in which the team struggled earlier in the season.

Saint Louis coach Brad Soderberg was pleased with his team's effort, but tipped his cap to the Minutemen's grit.

"They just made some big plays when they had to make them," said Soderberg. "The turnaround they've had in a year is remarkable."

UMass finds new Life late in game
By Brendan Hall, The Worcester Telegram & Gazette Correspondent, 2/25/2007

AMHERST- James Life’s shooting had been abysmal the past few games, and continued last night before the 9,088 at the Mullins Center. But late in a close contest against Saint Louis, a new visage came upon his face during a timeout.

“I came into the huddle, and I said, ‘I’m tired of this (expletive),’ ” he said.

Out of the timeout, Life swung around to the right wing, took a dish from Gary Forbes, and nailed a 3-pointer for his first points of the night, giving the Minutemen a 49-46 lead. Life then hit two crucial free throws — giving him five points for the night — with 15 seconds to play to make it 51-50, and the Minutemen won, 53-50.

UMass — winner of four in a row and seven of its last eight — improved to 21-7 and remains in first place in the Atlantic 10 at 11-3. The Billikens fell to 17-11, 7-7 in the A-10.

Life’s two winning foul shots came as a result of an atypical decision he made on the perimeter. The shoot-first two-guard caught a pass from Chris Lowe on the left wing, behind the 3-point line, and chose to drive to the basket rather than shoot. He was fouled by Tommie Liddell on the way up.

On the Billikens’ next possession, Forbes (13 points) met Liddell near half court and, facing a Luke Meyer pick from his left, picked his pocket. He was fouled from behind by Meyer, and made both free throws with 1.9 seconds left. Dante Milligan then intercepted the ensuing Saint Louis pass at half court, and tossed it in the air.

“Basic, textbook, playground basketball,” Forbes said of his steal. “I knew he (Liddell) was going to crossover. I just had my hands in the right place at the right time.”

The game itself, however, was anything but playground basketball.

Facing a physical battle down low against 6-foot-10 Ian Vouyoukas (18 points) and 7-foot Bryce Husak, the Minutemen’s 1-2 punch of Rashaun Freeman (12 rebounds) and Stephane Lasme faced foul trouble early (Freeman fouled out with 25 seconds left).

UMass finished with a season low in turnovers (nine), but also field goal percentage (29.5). The Billikens, meanwhile, shot 40 percent but had twice as many turnovers (18).

“When you hold a team to 30 percent shooting on their home court and can’t come away with a victory, that’s not a good sign,” Billikens coach Brad Soderberg said. “I’m proud of my kids, though, not trying to bash them, but we needed that win.”

Billikens lose ball and the lead in final minute
By Tom Timmermann, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 2/25/2007

AMHERST, MASS. — It seemed as if everything was going to go right for St. Louis University.

Even though they were playing one of the league's top teams on its home court and Tommie Liddell wasn't at full speed because of a toe injury, SLU had a victory over Massachusetts in its grasp Saturday night. The Billikens grabbed the lead in the final minute on a three-point play by Ian Vouyoukas, only to see Massachusetts retake the lead 10 seconds later. And then in the final seconds, Liddell had the ball stolen from him as SLU worked for the potential game-winner.

"I thought we were going to win after I made the free throw,'' Vouyoukas said. "I thought we were going to win."

Though their play sent good signs that the team can play with anyone in the league, the Billikens didn't get a win that would have done wonders for them. SLU shut down UMass, holding the Minutemen to 29.5 percent shooting for the game, but didn't make the baskets they needed to and lost 53-50 at Mullins Center. After so many losses in which coach Brad Soderberg was frustrated by the Bills' defensive play, this time his only frustration was over letting one get away.

"I'm disappointed we didn't pull this one out,'' Soderberg said. "When you hold a team to 30 percent on their home court and don't get the victory, it's not a good sign. I'm proud of my kids, but we need to get that win."

A win would have given SLU a decent shot at finishing fifth in the league, but instead, with two regular-season games to play, SLU is 17-11 and in seventh place in the Atlantic 10 Conference at 7-7. UMass (21-7, 11-3) remained in a tie with Xavier for first.

"This is a tough one to lose,'' Liddell said. "We could have put ourselves in great position with a win. But if we continue to play defense like that, we'll be all right."

Liddell was at less than 100 percent after tearing the nail off his right big toe Wednesday against Dayton. Soderberg kept him out of the starting lineup and Liddell played just 28 minutes. He did less driving to the basket than usual and was less active under the basket, though he still finished with six rebounds (and six points).

"I wanted to drive more, but it wasn't letting me,'' Liddell said. "I'm not using it as an excuse. I just had to get everyone else involved."

SLU negated UMass' two star big men, Rashaun Freeman and Stephane Lasme. Both got into foul trouble, which also allowed Vouyoukas to assert himself as he matched his season high with 18 points.

SLU went ahead 47-46 on a lay-in by Liddell with 2:13 to play. UMass retook the lead with 1:36 to play when James Life, who had missed his four 3-point tries to that point, finally made one.

With 25 seconds to play, Vouyoukas backed in on Freeman and scored. Not only that, but Freeman, who came in averaging 16.1 points, picked up his fifth foul and left the game having scored just four. Vouyoukas made the free throw and SLU was back in the lead at 50-49.

Life drove to the basket and was fouled with 15.6 seconds to play. He made both free throws to put UMass ahead by a point.

Soderberg put the ball in Liddell's hands. As he made his move at the top of the key with about six seconds to play, UMass' Gary Forbes reached out and knocked away the ball, and that was that. He was fouled and made two free throws.

"I got loose with the ball,'' Liddell said. "He hit it and he was going back the other way."
