MHERST - The University of Massachusetts men's basketball players didn't get much sleep Tuesday night and Travis Ford didn't get any after the Minutemen's 89-87 overtime win over Alabama in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament.
The team left Amherst at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday for an 11 a.m. flight to Pittsburgh after a game that ended just before midnight. It then bused the 80 miles south to Morgantown, W.Va., for tonight's game at 9 against West Virginia in the second round of the NIT.
UMass (24-8), the No. 4 seed in the East, advanced with its first postseason win in a national tournament since 1996.
Ford planned to stay up all night watching video of the Mountaineers, but admitted that preparation for tonight's game would be limited.
"It's tough preparation-wise because West Virginia plays a different style of basketball, but I think our kids are running on adrenaline right now. I think they're going to be excited about playing," Ford said. "I do believe that this time of year it's more about yourself. As much as I love preparation and scouting, you have to focus on yourself and make sure you're ready to play."
He did plan to utilize inside knowledge of Mountaineers' system from Luke Bonner, the sophomore backup center who played for West Virginia for a season before transferring to UMass.
"We're going to lean on him as much as possible. We'll run things by him and he'll give us suggestions and opinions," Ford said. "It's great to have somebody who was just in that system a couple years ago."
Bonner said he wasn't sure how much help he'd be scouting his former team.
"They've got a pretty different makeup. They're a very difficult team to scout because they have so many different plays," Bonner said. "But I'm definitely going to be involved trying to help out as much as I can."
Bonner added, "It's exciting to go back. I haven't been back since I transferred. I've been talking trash a little bit with a couple of my buddies who I still talk to."
Bonner said he is uncertain about how the crowd would treat him. "I'm curious. I left there on good terms. I was kind of like a fan favorite when I was there and I still get emails every once in a while from West Virginia fans wishing me luck. They're one of the toughest student sections to play against, so I'm looking forward to seeing what they have to say. I get a kick out of it. It's funny."
Bonner is the third Minuteman to face his former school this year. Dante Milligan squared off against Pittsburgh and Etienne Brower was on the bench when the Minutemen played Boston University.
West Virginia (23-9) was likely one of the last teams who were considered but left out of the NCAA Tournament. The Mountaineers' 4-5 finish to the season likely cost them a bid.
The top-seeded team in the East, West Virginia defeated No. 8 Delaware State 74-50 Tuesday.
Seven of the Mountaineers nine losses came against teams in the NCAA Tournament. They boast wins over UCLA, Villanova, North Carolina State and Connecticut.
Senior Frank Young, a 6-foot-5 forward, leads the Mountaineers with 14.2 points per game, followed by sophomore big man Joe Alexander, who averages 11.1 points and a team-best 4.7 rebounds.
West Virginia does most of its damage from deep as it has hoisted almost 900 3-point attempts which puts it among the nation's leaders.
The Mountaineers have made 328 of those shots, a .367 percentage, which is well ahead of a point per shot.
"They play a combination of Princeton with a little more aggressiveness to it. I know they've shot almost 900 3-point shots this year," Ford said. "They're going to shoot a lot of them. That's going to be a key to the game, defending the three. Rebounding is a must. You have to limit how many shots they get period."

ess than 48 hours after winning its first postseason game since 1996, the Massachusetts men's basketball team travels to West Virginia to face the No. 1-seeded Mountaineers in the second round of the NIT this evening at 9 p.m.
UMass (24-8) defeated Alabama, 89-87, in overtime on Tuesday night at the Mullins Center. It was the team's first national playoff win since 1996 when the Minutemen went to the Final Four.
In perhaps one of the biggest tests for UMass this season, West Virginia (23-9) hosts the Minutemen at the WVU Coliseum, with the winner hosting the quarterfinals against either No. 6 NC State or No. 7 Marist next week.
UMass and West Virginia's paths to the NIT quarterfinals have been nearly identical. West Virginia finished the regular season in seventh place in the Big East. The Mountaineers defeated Providence in the first round of the Big East Tournament, but were eliminated by No. 12 Louisville, 82-71, in double overtime of last Thursday's quarterfinals - the exact same night UMass was ousted from the Atlantic 10 Tournament by Saint Louis in overtime.
The Mountaineers thought their resume was good enough for an NCAA Tournament at-large bid after the first-round win over the Friars, but they never got the call from the Selection Committee, just like the Minutemen.
Six Big East teams advanced to the Big Dance, with West Virginia and Syracuse being surprisingly shutout of the action and thrown into the NIT - Providence is the third Big East team in the tournament.
UMass will have to shut down the Mountaineers' prominent 3-point shooting, as West Virginia leads the Big East in 3-point field goals made, averaging 10.25 buckets from behind the arc per game.
West Virginia is led by senior Frank Young. The 6-foot-5 forward leads the team in scoring with 14.2 points per game. The Mountaineers have four players averaging in double figures in scoring. Young is joined by forward Joe Alexander (11.1 ppg) and guards Darris Nichols (10.6 ppg) and Alex Ruoff (10.3 ppg). Alexander also leads the team in rebounding with 4.7 boards per game.
Young (17) and Ruoff (14) combined for 31 points in the Mountaineers' 74-50 first round win over Delaware State on Tuesday night. West Virginia outscored Delaware State 39-13 in the first half, en route to its 23rd win of the season.
Now UMass comes into the WVU Coliseum after putting together one of its greatest performances of the year on Tuesday night. Sophomore point guard Chris Lowe hit a fade-away floater in the lane with 1.6 seconds remaining in overtime, giving the Minutemen an 89-87 win over Alabama.
Lowe tied his career-high with 19 points in the win, but A-10 Player of the Year Stephane Lasme carried the team on his back throughout the game. Lasme fouled out of the game with three minutes left in overtime, but he finished the game with a team-high 21 points and nine blocks.
His fifth and final foul led to two free throws made by Alabama's Jermareo Davidson, putting the Crimson Tide on top 85-84. But he wasn't done contributing.
"When [Stephane] fouled out, it was the best leadership I've ever seen from a player," UMass coach Travis Ford said. "He was getting after it, and maybe coaching more than I was. He wanted to win so bad."
Lasme was standing next to Ford for the remainder of the game, and had been more vocal than ever before, not wanting to end his last game at the Mullins Center with a loss.
There's still a chance to come home for one more. The only obstacle is West Virginia, a team that is also looking to prove something to the NCAA Selection Committee.
ORGANTOWN, W.Va. - It looked like it might be a repeat of the 1995 season when UMass rallied back from 18 points down to beat West Virginia in overtime the last time these two teams faced each other. This time, the Minutemen trailed by 19 in the second half, whittling it to four on two occassions, but the Mountaineers were too much down the stretch defeating UMass 90-77 in the second round of the 2007 MasterCard NIT on Thursday night at the WVU Coliseum.
At 24-9 overall, UMass finishes its season with the fifth best record in school history.
West Virginia's Frank Young led all scorers in the game with a career-high 31 points on the strength of six three pointers and 11-of-15 shooting from the floor. His six three pointers in the game gave him the school record for treys in a single-season with 101.
Stephane Lasme (Libreville, Gabon) led UMass with 14 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks to finish his career with 1,011 points. James Life (Fort Myers, Fla.) was the high-scorer for the Minutemen with 20 points despite going 0-4 in the first half from behind the three-point arc and scoring just two points. He found his stroke in the second half hitting four-of-five from down town to help the UMass rally.
West Virginia (24-9) led by as many as 19 early in the second half before the Minutemen were able to whittle that down to a 56-52 with 11:52 to play. UMass cut the lead thanks to a 16-5 run on the strenght of seven points from Life and five points from Dante Milligan (New York, N.Y.). Milligan finished the game with a career-high 10 points after Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.) was saddled early in the second half with his fourth foul.
WVU hit six free throws to extend the lead to 62-52 in the next two minutes.
The Mountaineers continued to build their lead before Life hit back-to-back treys and then scored a lay-up off a WVU turnover to make it a four point game, 74-70, with 4:55 to go.
A jumper from Da'Sean Butler and two free throws from Young stretched the lead back to eight, 78-70.
The Mountaineers, however, closed the final minutes of the half on a 12-7 run to improve to 16-1 at home this season.
WVU led at the half 37-23 after UMass had one of its worst halves of basketball all season. The Minutemen scored the second-fewest total points in a half and had their second-worst field goal shooting percentage.
UMass finished the game shooting 50 percent hitting 31-of-62 field goals. The Minutemen were able to convert 13 Mountaineer turnovers into 22 points, however, the WVU bench outscored UMass 23-to-19.
West Virginia will now play the winner of the N.C. State/Marist game tomorrow night.
