Minutemen set for opener
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 11/11/2006

AMHERST - If it was up to Travis Ford, the University of Massachusetts would take another week of preseason before opening the 2006-07 season. But ready or not, his much anticipated second season in Amherst begins at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Mullins Center when the Minutemen host Dartmouth.

"I wish I had a little more time," Ford said. "We have refocused in the past two weeks a little bit and I see us coming around. We're not where we want to be a yet, but I do see a change in our basketball team for the better. I wish we had more time to work on that. But maybe we need a game to work on things. It always comes too quick."

It couldn't come fast enough for the players, especially the four who will make their regular season debuts for UMass in the game. Transfers Gary Forbes and Luke Bonner as well as freshmen Tiki Mayben and Ricky Harris will all see their first regular-season action for the Minutemen. The fifth newcomer, junior Etienne Brower, is out with an ankle injury.

Bonner, a sophomore from Concord, N.H., is excited about facing a foe from his home state.

"My boy Ryan Hurd is an assistant coach there," Bonner said. "He went to Concord High School and I've known him forever. It'll be fun to play him. I was talking trash to him this summer."

Dartmouth head coach Terry Dunn's twin brother Jerry was an assistant coach at West Virginia while Bonner played there.

Ford said he'll likely use a more liberal rotation Saturday and over the next couple of games before settling on a regular pattern. Brower and sophomore point guard Chris Lowe, who is serving a one-game suspension Saturday, are expected to be part of that rotation.

"It'll be a little while before we shorten it," Ford said. "Everyone is going to play for a little while. We're going to see who plays when the lights are on. Everybody will get a chance. I don't know what to expect from this basketball team because everyone is so new and we're combining so many different people. There's still a lot of questions to be answered. We're still trying to figure out who we are, but hopefully we can win games while we're doing that."

On paper Dartmouth looks like a pretty manageable first-game foe. The Big Green went 6-21 last year and are picked to finish eighth - and last - in the Ivy league by most of the preview magazines as well as in the league's preseason poll.

Dartmouth made an offseason trip to Costa Rica to try to get a head start of the season. However, they are starting a little behind as injuries could slow them early. Junior forward Jonathan Ball (groin) and senior guard and leading returning scorer Leon Pattman (ankle) could miss the game. Neither is listed in the Big Green's starting lineup.

It might be the opener, but Ford is in midseason form as far as hyping an opponent.

"It's a little bit scary playing against a team like Dartmouth," Ford said. "They're a very smart basketball team. They understand how to play and aren't going to beat themselves."

NOTES: This is the 17th meeting between the two teams and the first since 1990. The series is tied 8-8.

Led By Freeman, Minutemen Rout Dartmouth In Season Opener, 98-61
Freeman and Mayben each record double-doubles
From UMass Athletics, 11/11/2006

AMHERST, Mass. - Four players scored double-figures as Massachusetts (1-0) routed Dartmouth, 98-61, before 6,079 fans Saturday evening in the season-opener at the Mullins Center. Senior Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.) led the Minutemen with 23 points and 10 rebounds for his 31st career double-double. Freshman Tiki Mayben (Troy, N.Y.) also posted a double-double in his first career game with 12 points and 11 assists while senior James Life (Fort Myers, Fla.) and junior Gary Forbes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each added 17 points.

UMass came out of the gates on fire building a 10-0 lead and forcing a Dartmouth timeout just 3:09 into the start of the game. The Big Green finally got on the board at the 16:41 mark, but UMass went on another 7-2 run upping its lead to 19-4 and forcing the second Big Green timeout of the half with 13:25 left.

Life hit his third three-pointer in 10 minutes snapping a 7-0 Dartmouth scoring run at the 9:55 mark. It also stopped a three and a half minute scoring drought by the Minutemen.

Dartmouth hung around for most of the first half after withstanding the initial 10-0 UMass onslaught, but the Minutemen closed out the final 3:15 on an 18-5 run to take a commanding 52-29 halftime advantage.

UMass shot a blistering 66 percent (19-29) from the field in the first half and forced 10 Dartmouth turnovers. The Big Green shot 48 percent (12-25), but were just 1-of-7 (14 percent) from three-point range.

UMass began the second half right where it left off and took a game-high 25-point lead at 60-35 with 15:49 left forcing another Dartmouth timeout. The Big Green did not go away though and used a 14-5 run over the next four minutes to make it a 65-49 game.

The Minutemen responded, however, with a 24-2 run in the next 7:34 to provide the knock-out punch.

UMass shot 62 percent (39-63) from the field for the game and dominated the glass, 41-24. 10 different Minutemen recorded at least two points. UMass also held a commanding edge in the paint, 60-22. Dartmouth finished the game shooting 42 percent. They were led by Marlon Sanders' 14 points.

The Minutemen will now head to Pittsburgh, Pa., for the First Commonwealth Colonial Athletic Association Basketball Classic. The Minutemen will play three games in three days beginning with Oakland on Friday, Nov. 17 at 2:00 PM. They will also face No. 4 Pittsburgh on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 5:00 PM and Northeastern on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 2:00 PM. All games will be broadcast on the UMass Sports Network (100.9 FM in Western Massachusetts) and online at www.umassathletics.com. The game against Pitt will be televised by Fox Sports Pittsburgh.

Notes:

• Tiki Mayben's becomes the first UMass player with 10 or more assists since Maurice Maxwell had 10 against Xavier on Jan. 8, 2005.

• Mayben tallied his first career double-double with 12 points and 11 assists.

• Mayben's 11 assists tie a Mullins Center record. Monty Mack also had 11 dimes against Saint Joseph's on Feb. 21, 1998.

• This is Rashaun Freeman's 31st career double-double. He finished with a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds.

• The 98 points by UMass is the most since it scored 99 vs. Saint Joseph's on Feb. 22, 1994.

Post-game quotes
From UMass Athletics, 11/11/2006

Rashaun Freeman on Tiki Mayben:
I think people are seeing what he's capable of. The only thing he has to work on is his turnovers. When he can do that, and feel comfortable out there I think he will be very effective. I know him a lot better than most people do, and he actually does a lot better than he did tonight. That's how much confidence I have in him. But he still has to get comfortable on defense and offense. I think that about three games in he will really be able to help our team out a lot.

Rashaun Freeman on the whether or not they needed to win big to be satisfied:
Definitely, because we have some games that we will have to sneak in to get and we have others that we need to take care of. We can't take anyone lightly. We have to leave everything out there. We didn't take this team lightly, because every D-1 team has talent. They can come and get you if you take them lightly.

Freeman on whether or not he was concerned the team was getting too comfortable with the hype:
After a little accident at Albany we knew that we had a long way to get where we wanted to go, and we knew we had to continue to work hard to get where we want to be. Just because people say you are good, it doesn't mean that you are already there. We still have to work hard in practice and take every game one at a time. We have to be lucky as well.

Freeman on the season:
I treat every practice and every game like it's my last, because it is. I'll never get a home opener again.

Tiki Mayben on his game:
When I pass the ball I know that they are going to put it in the basket. There is no better feeling than that. Scoring is my third option.

UMass Head Coach Travis Ford on the game:
What I was most pleased with about this game is that we did what we were supposed to do. I can't say that in the last four or five weeks that we have done that in practice. Our forwards were bigger and stronger, and they really exploited their big guys. Our inside play really opened everything up... I liked our effort.

Gary Forbes on the game:
I was picking and choosing my spots. I wasn't trying to force anything. I was just trying to let the game come to me. After my first put-back, all the jitters went away.

Mayben passing muster: Freshman makes solid point with Minutemen
By Rich Thompson, The Boston Herald, 11/12/2006

AMHERST - Freshman Tiki Mayben could be the playmaker the low-post finishers have desired.

In his debut with the UMass men’s basketball team, the savvy point guard dished out 11 assists, had 12 points with just three turnovers to power the Minutemen to a season-opening 98-61 victory over Dartmouth last night at the Mullins Center.

It was most points scored in the Mullins Center since UMass beat St. Joseph’s 99-73 on Feb. 22, 1994.

“He was good this game and I’ll take 11 assists and three turnovers from my point guard, and I like the way he ran the team,” said second-year coach Travis Ford. “Overall he played very well and I’ll take three turnovers from a guy who controls the ball (31 minutes) as much as he did.”

Senior center Rashaun Freeman (25 points) and junior swingman Gary Forbes (17 points) aggressively deposited what Mayben delivered.

Senior guard James Life was the chief outside threat, hitting 5-of-8 treys on his way to 17 points for the Minutemen (1-0). With Mayben’s help, Freeman was a ridiculous 12-of-16 from the field and Forbes hit 8-of-11.

“I know right know that when I get the ball to them, they are going to put it in the hole,” said Mayben. “There is no better feeling than that.

“I know I can score myself, but that’s my third option. Playing with Rashaun, I got nothing to be nervous about because he’s my security.”

UMass and Dartmouth (0-1) met for just the 16th time and the victory evened the series 8-8. Former coach John Calipari was in the process of building his Atlantic 10 dynasty when UMass beat Dartmouth 80-66 in the last meeting on Dec. 28, 1990.

Dartmouth picked a bad time to visit the Mullins Center. The Minutemen had not lost a season opener since the building was erected in 1993 and the Ford era commenced with a 67-62 win over Hartford last year. Freeman hopes the victory will re-energize the UMass fan base.

“The student body wants to see what we have to offer and as we get better, we’ll give them more reasons to come back,” said Freeman. “I think this could be one of the toughest houses in the country.

“The goal is to win on the road. If we do what we can do on the road, then they’ll come.”

UMass went after the Big Green from the onset with an inside-outside attack fueled in transition. Life canned a pair of 3-pointers and Freeman added two layups in the Minutemen’s 10-0 opening run. Freeman contributed seven of the Minutemen’s next nine points to go up 19-4 with 13:25 to play.

Dartmouth countered the Minutemen’s fast break with a patient ball control rotation that resulted in open jumpers and backdoor cuts on the baseline. The backcourt tandem of DeVon Mosley (8 points) and Marlon Sanders (14 points) shot over screens and exploited the Minutemen’s perimeter pressure with daring cuts through the zone. They helped reduce the Minutemen lead to 26-18.

The Big Green’s rally was cut short when Ford liberally mingled his starters with the subs. Forbes sparked a 20-2 run into break.

UMass went into the recess with a 52-26 lead.

Dominating opener for UMass basketball team
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 11/13/2006

AMHERST - Very few of the 6,079 fans at the Mullins Center who saw the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team's season opener Saturday expected a competitive game.

UMass is expected to be pretty good and Dartmouth hasn't been strong in decades.

The fans came to see just how good the much-hyped Minutemen would look and they didn't disappoint in their 98-61 win. UMass scored the first 10 points and dominated throughout.

Rashaun Freeman dunk
Rashaun Freeman dunks for 2 of his 25 points.
"We did what we were supposed to do. I can't say that's always been the case even in practice," UMass coach Travis Ford said. "Tonight we were bigger and stronger than they were in the post and our inside play really opened things up for us. I liked our effort."

Much of the preseason attention has been focused on the Minutemen's five newcomers, but a pair of returnees set the tone early. Rashaun Freeman had 15 of his 25 points in the first half and finished with 10 rebounds for his 31st career double.

James Life made the first basket of the season and made five of seven 3-pointers and finished with 17 points.

"Obviously the people that live around here and the student body want to see what we have to offer. They were excited," Freeman said. "As we get better they'll have more and more reasons to come back. But I think they got a little glimpse of how we are and how are team is molded into what it is."

The fans got a big glimpse of newcomers Tiki Mayben and Gary Forbes. Mayben had 12 points and 11 assists and was named Atlantic 10 corookie of the week, while Forbes added 17 points.

"I was picking and choosing spots. I didn't want to force anything," Forbes said. "After my first put-back all the jitters went away. It was just a matter of time before things fell into place."

Luke Bonner had six points and Ricky Harris added eight points in their debuts for the Minutemen.

Alex Barnett and Marlon Sanders each had 14 points to lead Dartmouth.

The Minutemen play three games at the Colonial Athletic Association Classic in Pittsburgh next weekend.

UMass faces Oakland at 2 p.m. Friday before tangling with No. 4 Pittsburgh at 5 p.m. Saturday. The trip concludes against Northeastern at 2 p.m. Sunday.

"We're not looking forward to Pittsburgh right now," Forbes said. "We have Oakland on Friday and we have to take care of that game."

UMass was on track to score 100 for the first time in Mullins Center history, but the offensive output slowed as the team tried to get walk-on Matt Pennie a basket in the final four minutes. He delivered on a baseline layup at the buzzer to close out the scoring.

While Ford was happy with his team, he was far from satisfied with the turnovers (18) and free-throw shooting (65.2 percent).

"We have so many areas to improve on, free throws, turnovers, one-on-one defense," Ford said. "But it was a good foundation. This was not a game to get overly excited about like we're world-beaters. We played a fun style of basketball and did what we were supposed to do. That part was very positive."

His voice of reason
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 11/13/2006

AMHERST - After the postgame handshakes following the University of Massachusetts' 98-61 win over Dartmouth Saturday, Tiki Mayben looked at the ceiling as he walked toward the locker room.

"I was thinking about my grandfather," Mayben said. "I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for him."

During his high school basketball career, Mayben had a lot of people telling him how great he was on the court. His grandfather Delfort Hilton acted as the voice of reason, never letting Mayben get complacent and always pushing him to get better and When Mayben didn't reach the NCAA's minimum academic requirements to be eligible as a freshman, his grandfather cosigned Mayben's college loan application so he could enroll as a freshman and encouraged him to stay focused on his academics.

Hilton died during the summer. Mayben has a picture of Delfort and his grandmother Frances Hilton hanging in his locker.

He said he whispered a few words to them before making his collegiate debut Saturday night and again at halftime.

"At halftime I was a little frustrated with myself because I was missing shots," Mayben said. "I went in and spoke to them a little bit and came back out and handled my business."

Mayben was likely the only one frustrated with his play in the first half.

He looked like he might break UMass' single-game record of 15 assists in his debut after handing out nine before intermission.

Tiki Mayben drives past Dan Biber
Tiki Mayben drives past Dan Biber.
After the break, Dartmouth tried to adjust by playing off Mayben and daring him to shoot. So Mayben showed off his ability to drive by scoring 10 of his 12 points in the second half, while finishing with 11 assists and three turnovers. That earned him Atlantic 10 corookie of the week honors.

"You have to worry about me too. When you pass as much as I was passing in the first half, they just thought I was going to pass the rest of the game," Mayben said. "So it was easier for me to score at that point. I can score too. I know I can score myself, but that's the third option. I'd rather get the extra pass or the pass after the extra pass."

Mayben said if he knew he was as close to the record as he was, he might have passed even more.

"I would have gone for it if I knew. I was feeling good in the first half. I was telling the team I could go for 20 right now if everybody keeps hitting," he said. "But their defense switched up so I started going to the hole."

Fifteen is also the assist record at Kentucky, held by UMass coach Travis Ford, so if Mayben gets to 16, and that sure seems likely, he'd be outdoing his coach's personal best as well.

"I'll take him out at 14," Ford joked. "He should get it. I just think it's a matter of time. Tiki was good. I'll take 11 assists and three turnovers any day from my point guard. He did a good job. I liked the way he ran the team. He's a freshman who did not play basketball last year. I have to remember that sometimes. He's going to have his ups and downs at times, but tonight he was very good."

Rashaun Freeman, who has known Mayben since both played AAU for the Albany City Rocks, said Mayben will get even better.

"When he gets comfortable out there he can be a lot better than he was today," Freeman said. "I think by three games in he'll really be able to help our team out a lot."

Delfort Hilton probably would have reminded his grandson to work on his defense after Mayben struggled a bit guarding man-to-man, but he'd have been proud.

"I look up and know he's looking down on me," Mayben said. "He never got to see me put my jersey on. But I know he's watching me now."

Minutemen run all over the Big Green
By Danny Picard, The Daily Collegian Staff, 11/13/2006

From a 10-0 run to start the game, to the former manager knocking down a jumper at the final buzzer, the Massachusetts men's basketball team looked like the squad that most predicted in Saturday night's 98-61 season-opening win over Dartmouth.

The Minutemen (1-0) put on an impressive showing in their first official game of the 2006-07 campaign, shooting 62 percent from the field and finishing the night with four players in double figures.

"What I'm most pleased about in this game is, and nothing against Dartmouth, we did what we were supposed to do, and that can't always be said," UMass coach Travis Ford mentioned after the win. "In the past four or five weeks at practice, I can't say that we've always done what we're supposed to do. But tonight, we were just bigger and stronger than they were in the posts, and our big guys really exploited that a lot. Our inside play really opened everything up for us."

UMass went on a 24-2 run in the second half to take an 89-51 lead, putting any chance of a Dartmouth comeback to rest.

"We have games that we're going to have to try to sneak by to get, and then we have games when we're just going to have to take care of them," Senior Rashaun Freeman said. "We have to leave everything out there, we can't take them lightly. We definitely didn't take this team lightly because every Division I team has talent, and they can all come and get you if you fall back on them."

UMass didn't fall back one bit. Freeman and senior James Life got the Minutemen on the board early and often, leading the charge for its 10-0 run in the first three minutes of the game.

Life buried a three-pointer 17 seconds into the contest, followed by another just over a minute later. He finished the game with 17 points, and went 5-for-7 from behind the arc.

Freeman showed his dominance early on as well, scoring 15 of his game-high 25 points in the first half. He also had 10 rebounds on the night, giving him his 31st career double-double.

Freshman point guard Tiki Mayben notched a double-double as well in his first official collegiate game. Mayben had 12 points and 11 assists, making him the first UMass player to tally 10 or more assists since Maurice Maxwell had 10 helpers in the 2004-05 season.

The Minutemen ended the first half on a 20-5 run when Mayben made one of his many no-look passes to junior forward Gary Forbes for an easy basket. UMass held a 52-29 lead at the half.

"It helped us a lot going into the second half because we started the first half pretty good, but we started to let [Dartmouth] back into the game," Forbes said on ending the first half strong. "Our intensity was lacking, and getting out on the break and making defensive stops helped us going into the second half to make it a bigger lead."

Forbes finished the game with 17 points and six rebounds in his first game with the Minutemen after transferring from Virginia last year.

"We're going to celebrate tonight, and take it for what it's worth, but we have to move on," Forbes said. "It was a game that we were supposed to win, and it was a game that we were supposed to win big, so we have to move on."

UMass hits the road for three games in Pittsburgh next weekend in the Colonial Classic. The Minutemen face Oakland on Friday, No. 5 Pittsburgh on Saturday and Northeastern on Sunday. Their next home game will be on Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. against St. Francis.

Newcomers play big role in season opener
By Rob Greenfield, The Daily Collegian Staff, 11/13/2006

The Massachusetts men's basketball team played its first regular season game on Saturday against Dartmouth.

Piece of cake. The Minutemen rolled over the Ivy League bottom-feeder, pulling away in the middle of the first half. It was another game in a long season for most of these guys.

But for the transfers who hadn't played in a game that mattered in over a year, it was the biggest it's been for a long time.

Tiki Mayben, Gary Forbes and Luke Bonner got significant minutes on Saturday. Mayben sat out last season for academic reasons and played well at the point for the Minutemen in their first game of the season.

Bonner, the big man transfer from West Virginia, subbed into the game at the 13:25 mark of the first half. Both Mayben and Gary Forbes started for UMass. Mayben replaced suspended point guard Chris Lowe, and Forbes is an offensive weapon who transferred from Virginia last season.

All of them took a while to get going on Saturday. Forbes turned the ball over several times in the first half, including getting stripped trying to penetrate Dartmouth's 2-3 zone at the 8:29 mark. Forbes, who UMass coach Travis Ford said would play some point guard this season, guarded Dartmouth's point guard during UMass' full-court press in the early going.

By the end of the first half, Forbes, Mayben and Bonner started to get into their rhythm. With just over a minute left in the first frame, Mayben did a little shake-and-bake at the top of the key and found Forbes wide open underneath the basket after he had lost his man with a backdoor cut.

"I felt good," Mayben said. "Everybody knows what I've been through. My nerves are really gone. Playing with him I got nothing to be nervous about. It just made me feel good. Coming from high school I passed a lot and I got a lot of assists. I know that if I pass those guys are going to put it in the hole. It just feels real good right now."

"Tiki was good this game," Ford said. "I'll take 11 assists and three turnovers any day from my point guard. I like the way he ran the team. Tiki is a young man who is a freshman who did not play basketball last year. He is going to have his ups and downs but tonight he was very good.

"Three turnovers in 31 minutes, I'll take from a guy who controls the ball like he does," Ford added. "He's got to get better with his defense and containing his man a little bit. Thirty-one minutes is a lot. I'll be glad to have Chris Lowe back."

Mayben handled the ball a lot during the course of the game, and has had a problem in the preseason with turnovers like Lowe last season. Forty seconds into the second half, Mayben penetrated into the paint and left his feet without knowing what he was going to do with the ball - a cardinal sin in basketball. He threw the ball out of bounds trying to find freshman Ricky Harris on a backdoor cut.

"The only thing he has to switch is the turnovers," senior captain Rashaun Freeman said. "He can do a lot better than he did today. That's how much confidence I have in him. He's still got to get comfortable. Three games in, he'll really be able to help out the team a lot."

Ford said before the season that it takes transfers a half a season to get back into a solid rhythm, so the Mullins Center faithful might not see the real Mayben, Forbes, and Bonner until midseason.

Forbes, for all of his scoring ability, doesn't have a scorers' game. He lets the game come to him and doesn't force anything, which limits his turnovers. He is unselfish and rotates the ball without hesitation. Last night, he didn't score his first basket until he slammed home a rebound in the middle of the first half.

"I was picking and choosing little spots, I didn't want to force anything," Forbes said. "After my first put-back the nerves went away and everything pretty much fell into place. We practice so hard and so much that games are easy. Practices are different. It's going to pay off throughout the season and towards the end of the season."

Forbes finished the game with 17 points on 8-for-11 shooting in 29 minutes.

Bonner came into the game at the 13:25 mark of the first half and displayed his shooting touch, going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in 16 minutes of play. He took one three-pointer on the night, after the Minutemen had established a big lead.

UMass won 98-61 and will face much stiffer competition than Dartmouth, the Ivy League's punching bag. But seeing 98 points on the board must be nice after last season's poor offensive output. Forbes, Mayben and Bonner already have helped in that department.

Massachusetts routs men's basketball in season opener in Amherst
By Heita Miki, The Dartmouth, 11/13/2006

With two key starters Leon Pattman '07 and Johnathan Ball '08 out with injuries, the Dartmouth men's basketball team could not get anything going against the Minutemen of the University of Massachusetts. The Big Green lost 98-61 in the season opener for both squads in Amherst, Mass.

Massachusetts scored the first 10 points of the game and shot a stellar 61.9 percent, and the Minutemen never trailed in the contest. Dartmouth shot a solid 42.1 percent for the game, but the Big Green went cold from beyond the arc, shooting only 15.4 percent.

Massachusetts (1-0, 0-0 Atlantic 10), picked to finish second in the Atlantic 10, is looking to make the NCAA tournament, while Dartmouth (0-1, 0-0 Ivy) picked to finish last in the Ivy League, is trying to prove its doubters wrong. Both teams were looking to jump-start their seasons by picking up an early non-conference victory.

For the Big Green, Alex Barnett '09 and classmate Marlon Sanders '09 led the way with 14 points each. Brian McMillan '08 had five rebounds and Michael Giovacchini '08 had three assists off the bench to lead the team in those categories.

The Minutemen, with precise shooting, had four players score in double figures. Senior Rashaun Freeman led all scorers with 25 points and also grabbed 10 rebounds. Senior James Life went 5-for-7 from three-point range and scored 17 points. Junior Gary Forbes also scored 17, and freshman Tiki Mayben added 11 assists.

Early in the game, the Big Green men found themselves in a 15-point deficit, down 19-4 with 13:24 left in the first half, as UMass got off to a hot start behind Life's three-point shooting and Freeman's post play.

However, Dartmouth, led by Barnett and Sanders, climbed back into the game. With 3:49 left to play the score was 32-24, and the deficit was down to eight.

Unfortunately for the Big Green, the eight-point margin was as close as Dartmouth would get to UMass for the rest of the night. Massachusetts took command by going on a 20-5 run to close the half, making the halftime score 52-29. Freeman, Forbes and Life could not miss in the first half, shooting a combined 17-21 for 42 points.

In the second half, Dartmouth could not find a way to get back into the game, since the three-pointers were not sinking and Massachusetts continued its hot shooting. The Big Green got the deficit down to 16 midway through the second half, but the Minutemen ran away with the game from there.

UMass was very physical in the contest, and Dartmouth had no answer to the post play of the Minutemen.

Massachusetts, led by Freeman, outscored the Big Green 60-22 inside the paint and out-rebounded Dartmouth 41-24. Massachusetts also held a 14-5 edge in fast break points.

"UMass played very well, very physically, and attacked us from the beginning of the game," McMillan said. "We had a tough time competing against their size and strength, explaining the huge amount of points they had in the paint."

Although the Big Green lost, there were positives that could be taken away from the game. Point guard Sanders proved that he was more than capable of handling the ball, and the Big Green got a solid contribution outside of its starting five with 17 points off the bench.

To have a successful campaign, the men in green must keep teams from going on long runs like the one UMass had to close the first half. They must also cut back on the turnovers and tighten up their defense to not allow easy shots for the opponent.

"We have to stop the big runs," McMillan said. "We seem to get within striking distance and then the other team goes on a 10-15 point run. If we want to make a run at the Ivy League title, we have to learn how to put an entire game together and fight through the runs."

The Big Green will be back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Washington D.C. to take on George Washington (1-0), another A-10 foe. George Washington is coming off its best season in school history, posting a 26-1 regular season mark and making the NCAA tournament.

Dartmouth's home opener will be on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Colgate. The Raiders (0-1) dropped their first game of the season Friday night in a home loss to Stony Brook.
