ITTSBURGH, Pa. - Dante Milligan knows that the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team plays Oakland Friday. He's heard coach Travis Ford talk about how good the Golden Grizzlies are, but he admits that Saturday's game against Pittsburgh is looming in the back of his mind.
The Panthers loom a little larger for everybody. They are ranked No. 4 in the nation and present an opportunity for the Minutemen to make a statement nationally.
But Milligan, who began his career at Pittsburgh, has a personal motivation for Saturday's game at 5 p.m. He'll be back at the Peterson Events Center for this weekend's Colonial Classic for the first time since transferring to UMass in January 2005.
"I've been waiting for this. I'm trying to get back at them for not giving me a chance basically," said Milligan, who played 23 minutes in five games with the Panthers during the 2004-05 season. "It's hard because I have been anticipating that game, but I know before I get to that game we have to take care of business against Oakland."
Ford understands Milligan's motivation, but hopes he will be able to block it out when the Oakland game starts at 2 p.m. Friday.
"There's no question it's in his mind. He wants to go back and play well," Ford said. "We're not going out trying to prove things to people. We're trying to win the game. Hopefully he'll remember that and not put too much pressure on himself."
Milligan said he thought he'd be able to help scout a little when it came time to prepare for the Panthers.
"When we start watching film, I'll be able to elaborate more on what those guys are accustomed to doing," Milligan said. "I haven't gotten too much into that yet because we're just focusing on winning the first game against Oakland."
Ford said he isn't thinking about Pittsburgh. He's assigned an assistant coach to prepare a scouting report for both Pitt and Northeastern, who the Minutemen face at 2 p.m. Sunday.
"We're going to try to do everything possible to try to win the Oakland game," Ford said. "Whether I have to play somebody 40 minutes, we're going to play to win that game as if it's the only game. Then we'll approach the Pittsburgh game the same way. I would only try to save guys if we were up a lot of points and that's not going to happen. It's not a team you can blow out."
Ford said playing Oakland at 2 p.m. works well because the Minutemen can spend the rest of Friday after the game preparing for Pittsburgh.
The adventure in paperwork is over. UMass has signed six recruits as Travon Wilcher, Matt Hill, Matt Glass, Marcus Matthews, Max Groebe and Papa Ousmane Lo officially became part of the program. All six will be freshmen in 2007 and have four years of eligibility.
While the Minutemen have six scholarships to offer and signed six players, Ford said he's still recruiting for next season, adding that one or more of the signees could end up in prep school for a year.
"We're not done. We're not done at all. It's important because we're losing important players," Ford said.
Ford is now allowed by NCAA rules to talk about the recruits.
Marcus Matthews, 6-foot-3 guard, Valley Stream, N.Y. - The combo guard committed to UMass after his sophomore season and finally had the chance to sign his letter of intent. He missed a significant portion of last year with an ankle injury.
"We think eventually he'll be a great basketball player," Ford said. "I like his work ethic. He comes from a great basketball family. He needs to continue to work every day to get better and continue to improve."
Ford listed Matthews as the Minuteman most likely to end up in prep school.
"Marcus Matthews is a young man who we want to watch his progression. After sitting out last year, it's something we've talked to him about," Ford said. "He's going to be a great player for UMass one day, but we want to see if he needs another year maybe to help prepare in that guard spot. We have good options for him and us."
Travon Wilcher, 6-foot-7 forward, Springfield, - Ford said Wilcher, who is now at Lee Academy in Maine, could be the most athletic player he's ever coached.
"He's a young man that can block shots and score in the open court. He's 6-foot-7 and can play inside and outside and athletically he can make so many things happen," Ford said. "He'll be great defensively. Not only will he be a shot blocker, but he can guard on the perimeter as well. He's slim, but wiry strong."
Matt Hill, 6-foot-7 forward, Middletown, Conn. - The 6-foot-7 forward, who is currently at the Tilton School in New Hampshire, injured his Achilles tendon and will likely miss this season.
However, Ford remains optimistic about his future.
"He's got an Achilles injury that's going to keep him out this year, but the doctor said he's going to be fine. They just have to keep an eye on him," Ford said. "He's another 6-foot-7 athlete. He can play inside and outside. I saw him this summer and fell in love with him. He can play, shoot the 3. He can post people up."
Papa Ousmane Lo, 6-foot-9 forward/center, Theis, Senegal - Ford said Lo, who is now at the Winchendon School and will be 21 when he starts his college career, might be a project offensively but will be ready to step in defensively right away.
"He's probably the most premiere shot blocker that's not in college or the pros right now. He tries to block everything," said Ford, who compared him to current UMass big man Stephane Lasme.
"He's probably ahead of where Stephane was offensively at this point in time. Playing for (Winchendon coach) Mike Byrnes is probably exactly what he needs, because he always gets the most out of his players. Will he be ready offensively from day one? I doubt it, but we expect him to be ready defensively and take some of the shot blocks we'll be missing from Stephane. We think he's a great steal. He's been committed to us for a while and he loves us."
Matt Glass, 6-foot-7 wing, Underhill Center, Vt. - Ford went into the recruiting process looking to add shooters and Glass, now at the Northfield Mount Hermon School, provides one.
"He's really come on in the past year. He's deceptively athletic and has a great understanding of the game," Ford said. "He'll be able to step in and play. He's a prep school kid that's playing against great competition every day."
Max Groebe, 6-foot-4 guard, North Miami Beach, Fla. - Like Glass, Groebe gives the Minutemen another long-range option. He might be the player most ready to step in for the Minutemen.
"I like guys that can shoot the ball. We need more of them," Ford said. "Max, without question, is somebody that can do that.
I think he's ready to play at this level. He's a very strong kid and plays in a very intense league," Ford said. "Max has proven he can play at every level."

ITTSBURGH - Senior forward Stephane Lasme (Libreville, Gabon) posted his ninth career double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds and three others scored in double-figures as UMass (2-0) defeated Oakland (2-1), 65-56, in the first game of the First Commonwealth Colonial Athletic Association Basketball Classic at the Petersen Events Center. Junior Gary Forbes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied 15 in his second game at UMass. Senior guard James Life (Fort Myers, Fla.) scored all 15 of his points in the first half. Senior center Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.) notched 11 points.
UMass' defense was solid all game as the Minutemen held Oakland's top two scorers, who came in averaging a combined 34 points per game to just seven combined points. Guard Erik Kangas, who came in at 19.5 points per game was limited to just five and forward Vova Severovas (14.0 ppg) had only two points. Also, Nick Billings who came in at 12.0 points per game was held to two.
Life was the story of the first half as he hit all six of his shots (15 points) to help the Minutemen build a commanding 40-24 lead at intermission. UMass shot a blazing 68 percent in the first half making 15-of-22 shots including 6-of-8 from 3-point range. The Minutemen converted 10 of their first 11 shots of the contest.
The Minutemen jumped out to a 23-8 lead in the first 8:50 of the game as they hit nine of their first 10 shots from the floor. That finished with a 14-0 run as UMass made four 3-pointers in a row, two by Gary Forbes, one by Brandon Thomas (San Antonio, Texas) and another by Life with 11:10 left in the first half.
UMass continues action at the Colonial Classic on Saturday as the Minutemen take on host No. 4/5 Pittsburgh at 5 p.m. The game will air on ESPN Regional (Fox Sports Pittsburgh, SportsNet New York and Mid-Atlantic Sports Network). It can be heard on the UMass Sports Network (100.9 FM, 830 AM, 95.9 FM) and UMassAthletics.com.
NOTES
James Life reached double figures in the first 10:23 of the game and scored all 15 points in the first half. It is his 15th career double-figure game at UMass and second in as many games this season.
Stephane Lasme had his ninth career double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. It was his 21st career double-figure scoring game and 12th career game with 10 or more rebounds.
Gary Forbes scored in double-figures for the second game in a row with 15. It was his 26th career game with 10 or more points.
Rashaun Freeman had his second double-figure game of the year and 66th in 87 career games.
UMass hit 10 of their first 11 shots of the game in the first 10 minutes. That included 5-of-6 from the 3-point line.
ITTSBURGH -- The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team didn't deliver a knockout blow, but the Minutemen won most of the battles in yesterday's 65-56 victory over Oakland in the first game of a tripleheader this weekend in the Colonial Athletic Association Classic.
Oakland (2-1) made a comeback late in the second half, but UMass survived many turnovers to win its second game of the season.
"I'm happy we won, but it wasn't pretty," UMass coach Travis Ford said. "We played great in stretches and we accomplished the things we wanted to on defense. Offensively, there were stretches where we were tremendous and then we went from being great to absolutely pathetic. That's the challenge for this team. We have to become more consistent."
The Minutemen (2-0) were outscored, 32-25, in the second half.
"We just kept playing around," Ford said. "We never made the final knockout blow, but this time of year, we'll take it. There are just a lot of things we have to get better at."
The Minutemen ended the first half as strong they started it. Junior Gary Forbes and senior Brandon Thomas combined for a trio of 3-pointers on three consecutive possessions, giving UMass a 20-8 lead seven minutes into the opening half.
In the final two minutes of the half, senior Stephane Lasme had a layup, a steal, and two defensive rebounds, sending UMass into the locker room with a 40-24 halftime lead.
"We probably wouldn't have won if it wasn't for Stephane," Ford said. "I think everybody fed off his energy and his eagerness to win. He got every loose ball. Every rebound he went after, he got it. No question, he was the difference."
Lasme had 11 points and 14 rebounds, and Forbes and senior James Life added 15 points each. Oakland center Shawn Hopes had a game-high 17 points.
The Minutemen take on No. 4 Pittsburgh tonight at 5.
ITTSBURGH - As University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Travis Ford walked off the Petersen Events Center floor Friday afternoon, he had plenty to be happy with and plenty to be concerned about as the Minutemen prepared to meet No. 4-ranked Pittsburgh at 5 p.m. Saturday.
UMass defeated Oakland 65-56 win in the first game of the Colonial Classic. On the plus side, the Minutemen (2-0) were strong defensively and at times looked very good offensively as they dominated in the first half and led by double digits for most of the game.
But turnovers and free throw shooting, which have plagued UMass in the past, were problems again as was the Minutemen's inability to deliver a finishing blow. UMass turned the ball over 22 times, shot 8-for-22 from the foul line and watched the Golden Grizzlies (2-1) whittle a 22-point lead down to nine late in the game.
"I'm happy we won," Ford said. "We played great in stretches. We accomplished the things we wanted to on defense. Offensively we could go from great to absolutely pathetic at times. That's a challenge for this team.
"We have to become more consistent," Ford continued. "We never made the final knockout blow, but at this time of year we'll take it. But there's a lot of things we have to get better at."
Junior Gary Forbes agreed.
"We have to be able to finish off the game," Forbes said. "We have to be able to keep our focus and we lacked that at the end. We have to cut down on our turnovers. (Saturday) we can't have the same effort we had today."
The early start time at 2 p.m. and lack of a local team led to a nearly empty arena as 31 people were in their seats by the national anthem. The crowd didn't exceed 300 until late in the second half when Pittsburgh fans started to arrive for their team's 5 p.m. game against Northeastern.
Ford told his players to "make your own energy" early and they responded by hitting 10 of their first 11 shots. Senior guard James Life made all six of his shots, including three 3-pointers, and had all 15 of his points before intermission.
Coming off his impressive debut last Saturday against Dartmouth, freshman point guard Tiki Mayben struggled for the Minutemen. He was whistled for his second foul 3 minutes, 15 seconds into the game and never quite found his rhythm as he failed to score and committed six turnovers to go along with four assists.
With foul trouble putting Mayben on the bench early, sophomore Chris Lowe made his season debut. He missed the Dartmouth game after being suspended and his return seemed to ignite the Minutemen.
Lowe helped direct a 14-0 UMass run en route to its 40-24 halftime edge. The Minutemen outscored Oakland 34-17 with Lowe in the game during the first half.
"Chris Lowe is a different point guard than Tiki. Tiki is a little more creative and tries more things, C-Lowe is going to run the offense a little more," Ford said. "Both of them are good. Tiki got in early foul trouble and in the second half he tried to force things to get himself into the flow."
Lowe said he was glad to contribute.
"It felt good to come in and help the team any way I can," Lowe said. "Coming off the bench or starting doesn't matter. I thought the team needed a little spark and I came in and gave them a little spark."
While Life cooled off after intermission, Stephane Lasme took over. The senior big man, who was quiet against Dartmouth, had 11 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks.
"We probably wouldn't have won if it wasn't for Stephane, not just stat-wise but we really fed off his energy and his eagerness to win," Ford said. "He was the difference because he played a complete game."
Forbes scored 15 points and had five rebounds, while Rashaun Freeman added 11 points.
Shawn Hopes led the Grizzlies with 17 points and four steals.
