MHERST - On Feb. 21, 2004, the basketball game with St. Francis was the biggest game of Brandon Thomas' career.
The game was the annual "Battle of Brooklyn" between St. Francis and Long Island University which share the New York City borough. Then a sophomore at LIU, Thomas scored 30 points as the Blackbirds upended the Terriers 78-75. He was named most valuable player of the game.
"That was a long time ago, like four years ago," Thomas said shaking his head and smiling at the memory. "That was the highlight game (of his LIU career). That's a big game, the Battle of Brooklyn."
The game was actually played less than three years ago, buts it's easy to see why it felt like a longer time to Thomas whose life has changed a lot since then.
Tonight at 7, Thomas and the rest of the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team (3-1) will face St. Francis again.
Thomas left Long Island not long after that game, heading to junior college in Florida where he didn't play for a year before transferring to UMass. He's been in and out of the starting lineup in just over a year as a Minuteman and has averaged just 14 minutes per game coming off the bench so far this season.
Minuteman coach Travis Ford said Thomas' limited playing time largely results from the performance by UMass' other wings, James Life and Gary Forbes.
"Right now James Life is off on a torrid pace. When he's shooting like that you have to have him in the game," Ford said. "Brandon's going to get his minutes, but it's been tough to get him in there when James has been shooting the way he has. But Brandon's minutes will probably continue to go up."
Thomas, who led the Minutemen in scoring in their August trip to the Bahamas, said he's trying to stay ready.
"I'm trying not to force anything. I just want to let the game come to me. I'm going to keep working hard until things start flowing again," Thomas said. "The guys that are in the starting lineup playing a lot of minutes are playing really well. Whenever I can get my chance, I'll try to do the same. You never know when your time will come, so you have to be ready to go all out to be able to contribute."
St. Francis has struggled to an 0-4 start although three of those losses came against postseason regulars at the BCA Classic in Syracuse where the Terriers lost to Penn, the University of Texas-El Paso (coached by former Minuteman Tony Barbee) and the host Orange.
But their struggles continued at home Saturday when they fell 79-60 to a lightly regarded Maine team.
Junior college transfer Robert Hines has paced the Terrier offense, averaging 15.8 points and five rebounds per game. Junior guard Marcus Williams, who went to Globe Junior College - which also produced former Minuteman Chris Chadwick - has averaged 9.3 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists.
"They're still finding themselves. They're still searching for their identity because they brought in three junior college players who are very good," Ford said of St. Francis. "Hines is the type of player we're looking for and trying to recruit. He's an undersized post. He's a meat-eater. He can score. He plays hard. I like their team. One-on-one they're as good as you're going to find. They're going to play as fast any anyone we're going to play."
Ford said he was glad to be back at the Mullins Center after the weekend trip to the Colonial Classic in Pittsburgh.
"Hopefully we'll have a little bit of energy because we're back home," Ford said. "Having only one day to prepare for St. Francis isn't the greatest scenario in the world, but hopefully our guys will be excited to get back home."

MHERST, Mass. - Senior co-captain Stephane Lasme (Libreville, Gabon) posted the first triple-double since Al Skinner in 1973 to lead UMass to a 63-49 win over St. Francis (N.Y.) on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center. He scored a game-high 19 points, hauled in 10 rebounds and blocked a school-record 11 shots. The Minutemen overcame a sluggish first half behind Lasme's inspired second-half play to improve to 4-1 on the season.
Lasme's triple double was the first since current Boston College coach Al Skinner did so against Saint Peter's on Dec. 28, 1973 with 27 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists. His 11 blocked shots was also a school-record besting the previous mark by two. Harper Williams, Marcus Camby, and Lasme shared in the former record of nine blocks.
The Minutemen opened the game on an 8-0 run before the Terriers (0-5) cut the lead down to two points, 9-7. Redshirt junior Gary Forbes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a three-pointer to push the lead back to five and UMass never looked back.
St. Francis fought hard during the first half keeping within double digits of UMass with the help of a 7-to-2 second-chance point advantage despite being outsized. A lay-up by sophomore Chris Lowe (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) with 10 seconds in the first half gave the Minutemen a 29-22 lead at intermission.
Within the first three minutes of the second half, UMass exploded on a 10-to-2 run building a 39-24 lead paced by seven points from Lasme. In the second half he also recorded eight of his 11 blocked shots.
Sparked by Lasme's play, Freeman was able to work the post as well going 6-for-8 from the floor for 14 points and eight rebounds. Forbes provided another nice inside-outside game offensively with 11 points, four assists, four blocks, and three rebounds.
As a team, UMass shot 48.9 percent from the floor and had 16 assists on 23 field goals. Points in the paint was also a factor with UMass holding a 40-to-28 advantage.
The Minutemen head to Jacksonville, Ala., this Saturday for an 8:30 p.m. (EST) tip at Jacksonville State.
tephane Lasme had UMass' second triple-double all-time as the only other came when current BC coach Al Skinner had 28 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists against St. Peter's on Dec. 28, 1973 in Springfield, Mass. It was the first triple-double at the Mullins Center and first in Amherst.
* Lasme set the UMass record for blocked shots in a game with 11. He broke the record of nine, which he tied last season on Nov. 22, 2005 at Davidson. All-American Marcus Camby had previously done it twice in 1996. It was originally set by Harper Williams in 1991.
* Stephane Lasme scored in double-figures for the third time this season and 23rd time in his career.
* It was Lasme's 10th career double-double and second this season.
* Lasme had more than five blocks for the 17th time in his career. He had more than seven for the seventh time in his career.
* Rashaun Freeman has scored in double-figures in every game this season and 69 in his 90 career games. Freeman played his first college game against St. Francis back in 2003 and now has 1346 points in his career to stand 14th all-time at UMass.
* Gary Forbes has been in double-figures every game at UMass and 29 time in his career with 11 in the game.
* Tiki Mayben made his first-career 3-pointer with 14:20 left in the first half.
* UMass' first nine baskets were assisted including five by Mayben.
Ford on his team's execution:
"Neither effort or execution were there tonight. I kept calling plays. We weren't just not running the play, we would run a different play. They just weren't focused. We weren't on top of our game tonight. There were certain times we went on runs and did some good things. We got off to a good start. I don't want to make it sound like we played terribly. We're 4-1 through five games, this is the first game that the effort wasn't there. I don't think it was intentional, I just think we couldn't get out of it. Hopefully we don't do that again. I don't think we overlooked St. Francis. I don't know what it was. I've been around the game long enough, you're going to have games like this. Hopefully you don't have many. We can't play like this Saturday. I know Jacksonville State very well, they're 20 points better at home."
Ford on whether he knew about Lasme's potential triple double:
"I had no clue. I knew he was blocking shots all night because I kept getting on my team on getting beat off the dribble. I love that he's on our team, thank goodness because they would have had a lot more layups. When he gets a lot of blocked shots, that means we're not guarding well one on one the way we need to be. But, every team has their strengths, and that is one of ours. I told our team at halftime that they get in to a bad habit knowing that Stephane is behind them. They know that if they get beat that Stephane will be there. That can't be the approach we take. We've got to get better at keeping our guys in front of us. Like I said, everybody has got their strengths and that is certainly one of ours."
Ford looking forward to Jacksonville State on Saturday:
"I know the head coach (Mike) very well. I love his coaching style. He is from Holyoke and his assistants are from Holyoke;that is one reason this game got put together. It's a tough place to play. He's always an aggressive coach, he will always throw something funky at you. He's got two post players averaging 24 points a game each. I've had three media call me Monday from down there wanting to talk about the game. I told them I had a game before them, but they didn't care. That's all they're talking about down there, UMass. They've never had a game like this. It's going to be packed. You can't look at their record because their best player, who is a post player, didn't play until last night. I hope our players get a grasp at how hard this game is going to be. It is a very well-coached team with very good basketball players."
Stephane Lasme on his performance:
"I like the fact that they count on me. I just don't want them to feel like they don't have to play defense. We have to get better defensively as a team."
Lasme on whether he was aware of the potential triple-double:
"I didn't know. I didn't really care. The only satisfaction that I had was that my brother was here. It was the first time he saw me play. The whole time I just kept thinking about winning the game."
Freeman on Lasme's performance:
"I didn't know. I think he had three or four blocks (at the half) and coach told Stephane he was doing great, but if Stephane is blocking shots, that means the guards are getting beat off the dribble. Coach didn't like that. Everybody knows they have the comfort of Stephane blocking shots. It's better if he gets blocked shots on his man; that mean's everybody is playing defense. I am proud of Stephane, I think this gives him more confidence. This is not his lucky night, this is Stephane, this is what he can do if he stays out of foul trouble. That is the only thing that is stopping Stephane, the tick tack fouls. If he can play a whole game, these are the kinds of things that he can do."
Freeman on Lasme's presence:
"Sometimes when Stephane has that feeling, he tells Tiki and Chris Lowe to lean their men towards him. So if the opponent drives, to drive towards Stephane. Sometimes, it hurts Stephane. He can get the tick tack fouls that land him on the bench. We have to understand that Stephane is there to help us, but he can't be our main resource and just get beat off the dribble. Teams will start going in to Stephane and that is going to cause him trouble."
MHERST - Modest to a fault, Stephane Lasme prefers to let his game do the talking. Last night it spoke volumes as the senior center from Gabon posted a triple-double with game-high totals of 19 points and 10 rebounds, and a school-record 11 blocked shots to lead the University of Massachusetts to a 63-49 victory over St. Francis (N.Y.) in a Thanksgiving Eve clash at the Mullins Center.
For Lasme, the achievement was special for one reason: It was the first game he played in front of his younger brother. Romaric Lasme, 18, arrived this year from their African home, and is playing at the Winchendon School.
"The only satisfaction I have right now is that my brother was here and I played [well]," said Lasme. "I was a little worried that I wasn't going to play that great for him the first time he saw me."
The triple-double was only the second in school history. Boston College coach Al Skinner had the other in 1973 when he put up 27 points, 18 rebounds, and 10 assists against St. Peter's.
Julius Erving almost certainly had some triple-doubles during his two-year varsity career from 1969-71, but blocked shots were not an official statistic until 1980; Dr. J used to redirect squadrons of shots all over the Curry Hicks Cage. He averaged over 20 points and 20 rebounds, and notched a double-double in every game of his career, save one.
Fellow senior Rashaun Freeman, who chipped in 14 points, was not surprised by Lasme's performance. "This is not like his lucky night," said Freeman. "This is Stephane. This is what he can do."
The 4-1 Minutemen needed Lasme's effort on a night when their team performance was otherwise lackluster. UMass struggled with turnovers (19), and only outrebounded an undersized Terrier team, 37-33. The Minutemen also hoisted up some rushed threes, connecting on just 3 of 16 attempts, rather than exploiting their size advantage underneath.
"I thought we were very, very sluggish," second-year coach Travis Ford said. "We just made enough plays to win. Effort and execution -- neither one of them were there tonight. We weren't on top of our game."
St. Francis (0-5) gave UMass some room for error, but the Terriers proved feistier than expected. They fell behind, 8-0, and never pulled even, but were never really out of it until very late.
It was a 7-point game at halftime, 29-22. A scoring and swatting surge by Lasme at the beginning of the second half opened the lead to 15. St. Francis closed to 8 on a layup by Robert Hines (team-high 12 points) with 2:50 remaining, but could draw no closer.
For much of the night, the Terriers kept attacking the rim fearlessly with some success, but also inviting a festival of rejection from the nation's leading returning shot-blocker. The 6-foot-8-inch Lasme had shared the school record of nine blocks with Harper Williams and Marcus Camby (twice).
MHERST - Romaric Lasme picked a good game to see his older brother play at the University of Massachusetts for the first time.
Watching the game with the rest of his Winchendon School teammates, Lasme watched his older brother Stephane Lasme register the first triple double in over 30 years and break the single game blocked-shot record as the Minutemen hung on to defeat St. Francis 63-49 Wednesday at the Mullins Center.
![]() Stephane Lasme dunks for 2 points on his career night. |
Not realizing he was close to the achievement, Lasme was defending away from the basket looking for more blocks, which almost cost him the triple double. But after grabbing his ninth rebound late, Lasme grabbed his 10th with two seconds left on a Marcus Williams miss.
"I had no idea," said Lasme. "It was no big deal as long as we win."
It meant a little more to his brother.
"I'm very happy," Romaric Lasme said. "That was the first game seeing my brother. The triple double was like a present for me. I hope every game is like this one."
"I told him I was going to play well for him," Lasme said. "But he's seen me play a lot at home."
Boston College coach Al Skinner was the last Minuteman to achieve the feat when he had 27 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists against St. Peters on Dec. 28, 1973.
The 11 blocks broke the record that Lasme shared jointly with Marcus Camby, who did it twice and Harper Williams.
Rashaun Freeman added 14 points and eight rebounds, while Gary Forbes, who has scored in double figures in all five games of his UMass career had 11 points.
UMass heads to the road for a two-game southern swing beginning with Jacksonville (Ala.) State, at 8:30 p.m., Saturday.
The Minutemen opened an 11-point lead early in the first half, but while the Terriers never really threatened to wrest control of the game away from UMass, they managed to keep the score respectable for the first half despite the fact that their top offensive option, Robert Hines, spent most of the first half on the bench with three fouls.
In the second half, the Minutemen pounded the ball inside to stretch their lead to 16 points twice.
But a sloppy finish allowed the Terriers to cut the deficit back to single digits before UMass stretched its edge in the final moments.

MHERST - When University of Massachusetts coach Travis Ford was completing his team's schedule with Saturday's game at Jacksonville State, he thought about the competition level and how the game might affect his team's ratings percentage index.
![]() James Life tries to track down the loose ball. |
"If I had thought about that ahead of time. I might have set up to leave Thursday night," Ford said laughing.
His team won't leave for Alabama until Friday morning. With games Wednesday and Saturday nights, there isn't time for the players to go home for Thanksgiving. As is the case with many programs, the head coach is hosting the annual holiday meal today.
"All the players and managers and all the family members of all the coaches - we're bringing everybody so it will be a fun day. There's going to be about 45 of us," Ford said.
Steve Middleton's wife ReGina will be leading the cooking. Middleton sounded excited as he listed the menu items: "Turkey, ham, collard greens, candied yams, baked macaroni and cheese, cranberry sauce," said Middleton. Then as he walked away, Middleton shouted, "Oh and stuffing, can't forget stuffing."
Ford said his house is overflowing with food.
"Steve's wife is going to be doing most of the cooking and my wife is going to assist. Both of them went grocery shopping (Monday)," he said. "You should see my house. I've never seen so much food in the refrigerator."
Ford expects the TV will go back and forth between the football games and the marathon of college basketball on ESPN2. "We'll watch the games, definitely," he said.
LO IN THE BUILDING - Future Minuteman Papa Ousmane Lo attended Wednesday's game against St. Francis along with several other members of the Winchendon School team.
NEXT UP - The Minutemen are back in action at 8:30 p.m. Saturday against Jacksonville (Ala.) State. The Gamecocks, who went 16-13 last year, are 1-2 after Tuesday's 95-72 win over Reinhardt. Holyoke native Mike LaPlante is the head coach at Jacksonville State and his staff includes former Northampton High School coach Don Moye.
