acksonville - To land a home game like Mike LaPlante was able get for Saturday night takes a lot of things falling into place. The stars certainly were aligned right for the Jacksonville State basketball coach to get Massachusetts to come to Pete Mathews Coliseum. Typically, teams at Jacksonville State's level have to travel to play the more recognized teams in the country, and get paid handsomely for the experience. Not only did LaPlante get the Minutemen to come to JSU, he got a return game to Amherst next year and a five-figure check, to boot.
"It's nothing but good for our program," LaPlante said. "We've spent enough other times in somebody else's gym playing for a guarantee. It's a great opportunity to get somebody of that stature to come and play you in your home. I think it should be super for our fans to come and see a great level of basketball played here.
"You look around the country and you look at the schools OVC (level), they're not getting the UMasses coming in all the time. We're going to have to be on top of our game. It'd be like having Vanderbilt come down here to play football. Whether you've got them on your home football field or not, you're going to have to be good."
The timing couldn't have worked out better for the Gamecocks. They were going to play a guarantee game anyway, and UMass was on the radar because it would be a nice homecoming for junior forward Dorien Brown (not to mention LaPlante and Gamecocks assistant Don Moye, too).
But UMass coach Travis Ford wanted to take his team on the road. The way their Atlantic 10 schedule is set up this year, the Minutemen have their toughest conference games on the road.
They go to Savannah State after playing the Gamecocks (1-2), which made this game a good fit. They already played at No. 4 Pitt and have trips planned to Kentucky and Louisville. Actually, five of their first seven games and nine of their first 12 are on the road - and that doesn't count the five-game bonding trip they took to The Bahamas in August.
"We're a team that's trying to add a lot of new players," Ford said. "We had four sit out last year playing significant minutes (now) and there's no better way to be tested than to be tested on the road. It makes you grow up real quickly. I think it makes your team better in the long run."
LaPlante had discussions for a similar home-and-home arrangement with Alabama, but it was after UMass had committed to this deal and it completed the Gamecocks' schedule. Tide coach Mark Gottfried was even willing to come here this year, but LaPlante would prefer not having both at home or both on the road in the same year.
If LaPlante didn't have a relationship with Ford, this conversation of the Minutemen coming to Pete Mathews probably would've never taken place. Ford brought his Eastern Kentucky team into The Pete twice and left with losses both times. The last time, in 2005, it was a 15-point thumping by a JSU team that won only seven games when EKU was among the OVC's best. It was the last game the Colonels lost that year before falling to Kentucky in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
Ford has one vivid memory of those visits.
"I remember the band being right outside the locker room, and the cheerleaders, I do remember that, the crowd on top of your baseline," Ford said. "It's just a tough place to play. It's always been a tough place for us."
The Minutemen (4-1), picked second in the preseason A-10 poll and a projected NCAA Tournament team, will be the highest profile team to play at Pete Mathews since Mississippi State came in 2000. They are one of three programs to play here that has played in the Final Four (UMass, Mississippi State, Jacksonville).
The JSU players realize the opportunity presented them and don't plan to be intimidated.
"I'm looking forward to it, but I treat it like every other game," senior forward Courtney Bradley said. "It's not something I'm dwelling on, like UMass is coming in here (and) we've gotta show them what we can do, like they're discriminating against us because we're here. We're gonna play them just like everybody else.
"We're not playing the name on their shirt; we're gonna play them. If they think they can come in and just beat us, underestimate us, we're gonna take all their talent."
It will be a tall order. Before JSU got 6-foot-10 Amadou Mbodji eligible - and it's not certain how much he'll even play Saturday - the Minutemen had eight players on their roster as tall or taller than the tallest Gamecock.
Rashaun Freeman, a 6-9 senior, is a preseason All-Atlantic 10 pick. Six-eight Stephane Lesme is a third-team preseason pick, the reining A-10 defensive player of the year and is coming off a triple-double Wednesday night in a 63-49 victory over St. Francis (19 points, 10 rebounds, 11 blocks). Guard Tiki Maybin originally signed with Syracuse, but didn't have the grades and landed at UMass after spending all last year working to regain his eligibility.
"I'm real anxious to play them," 6-7 senior forward Harold Crow said. "They're a big school. I'm wanting to play a real big school and show how talented we are. We're showing a whole lot of people what we're capable of. If we do make it out of our conference, that's the caliber team we're gonna have to play anyway."
If LaPlante has one lament about the game it's that he'd have preferred to play it when the students were on campus. Still, he's hoping the UMass name will be strong enough to pique the interest of the general sports fan; the 2000 Mississippi State game drew an announced crowd of 4,986 in the 5,500-seat arena. They did catch a break by the JSU football team not making the I-AA playoffs, which also starts Saturday.
"We looked at all of that," LaPlante said. "Bottom line, it's a great opponent to try to get here and the date, because that's the only way they worked out, we're going to go with it.
"What we're going to have to rely on is the people in our surrounding area. My expectations are that we're going to have a very good crowd. I would be very surprised and disappointed if we didn't."
MHERST - University of Massachusetts senior big man Rashaun Freeman said if the Minutemen want to become the team they think they can be, they've got to win games like the one at 8:30 p.m. Saturday game at Jacksonville State in Alabama.
"We don't want to look back on this game saying we could have had this one. We have to take care of this game," Freeman said. "That's the next step for our team to take care of games like this on the road. We realize this game for them is going to be big. Little do they know it's big for us. We have a lot of things to accomplish."
Any road win would be a step in the right direction for the Minutemen who were 2-11 in front of hostile crowds last season. They are 0-1 this year after losing at Pittsburgh last week.
"It's an important one for a lot of reasons," UMass coach Travis Ford said. "Obviously we want to get off to a good start on the road and win some games on the road after coming up short at Pittsburgh."
Saturday's opponent is familiar to Ford because the Gamecocks were an Ohio Valley Conference rival when he coached at Eastern Kentucky. Ford was 2-2 against Jacksonville State, losing both games at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
UMass (4-1) is the biggest game on the Gamecocks' schedule and it is getting considerable attention in Jacksonville.
Jacksonville State is 1-2 after opening with a 66-54 loss at New Orleans and getting nipped 82-80 at home by Wofford. Their lone win came Tuesday against Reinhardt, an NAIA school in Georgia.
The Gamecocks have several ties to western Massachusetts as head coach Mike LaPlante is a Holyoke native, and his assistant Don Moye is the former boys basketball coach at Northampton High School. Dorien Brown, a 6-foot-7 junior forward and the team's top rebounder, is from Lynn and attended Northfield Mount Hermon.
Ford said he was glad to beat St. Francis 63-49 Wednesday, but was disappointed with his team's play. He lamented the lack of practice time to address the problems.
"We need practice time. Things we did wrong against St. Francis, we have not been able to work on. Hopefully we can play better than we did," Ford said. "Our schedule has not been good for us. We've not gotten near enough practice time in, and I don't see a lot of practice time in sight.
"Even after Jacksonville State we have to take off on Sunday and only really get one day to prepare for Savannah State (7 p.m. Tuesday)," Ford continued. "Then we leave Wednesday and only really get two days to prepare for Boston College (7:30 p.m. Saturday). The only time I see any time available is after the Louisville game (Dec. 13) when we have several days available to work on some things. I think it's going to prohibit us from playing our best basketball now. I don't think that will come until later. We're just trying to survive."
While the Gamecocks have just one player taller than 6-foot-7 - seldom used Amadou Mbdoji at 6-10 - they have an inside-oriented offense.
Brown is averaging 15.5 points to go with his 8.5 rebounds, while 6-foot-5 senior forward Courtney Bradley leads Jacksonville State with 23.7 points per game to go with 8.3 rebounds.
"Their two post players inside are as good as any in the Atlantic 10 except for maybe ours. It's going to be a very good matchup inside," Ford said. "Hopefully we can stay out of foul trouble. If we do that, I think we can be in good shape."
INJURY REPORT - Junior forward Etienne Brower is finally in better shape and has begun limited participation in practice. However, Ford does not plan on playing Brower until he's completely caught up.
"In the right situation maybe, but I doubt it," Ford said. "He's at least getting on the practice court a little bit, but as far as being able to count on him in a game and him making a difference, I don't think he's there yet."
Brower, a transfer from Boston University, has missed all five UMass games with a sprained ankle.

ACKSONVILLE, Ala. - UMass jumped out to a 18-2 lead and host Jacksonville State trailed by double-figures for the remainder of the game as the Minutemen moved to 5-1 with a 100-69 victory at the Pete Mathews Coliseum on Saturday night. It is UMass' best start since the Final Four seasons of 1995-96, when they got off to a 26-0 start. It is also the first time UMass scored 100 points in a game since Dec 22, 1999 that the Minutemen scored 100 points in a game.
Seven players scored in double-figures for UMass, which is believed to be a school record. Last season UMass had six players with 10 or more against Savannah State - that the first time UMass had that many in double-figures since 1991.
Junior Gary Forbes led the way with 20 points for the Minutemen as he has scored in a double-figures in all six games this season. The inside combination of seniors Rashaun Freeman (18 points, 10 rebounds) and Stephane Lasme (11 points, 10 rebounds) combined for 29 points and 20 rebounds in the victory.
James Life netted 11 points. Chris Lowe, Dante Milligan and Brandon Thomas all had 10 points off the bench.
Forbes scored a team-best 11 points in the first half as UMass led 47-28 at intermission.
The Minutemen dominated early with Freeman scored six points in the 18-2 run as UMass opened a lead of 23 points (38-15) on a 3-pointer by Brandon Thomas with 6:00 left in the first half. The largest lead was 24 points at 46-22 on a Chris Lowe 3-pointer.
UMass continues its Southern swing with its first-ever trip at Savannah State on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
Mass is off to its best start since the Final Four season of 1995-96, at 5-1. In 95-96, UMass won its first 26 games of the year.
* UMass scored 100 points for the first time since Dec. 22, 1999, when they beat AU-Puerto Rico, 102-65 at Puerto Rico.
* The 31-point win on the road is the largest margin of victory away from home since UMass beat Rhode Island, 78-46 in Providence on Jan. 30, 2001.
* UMass had two players with double-doubles in Rashaun Freeman (18 points, 10 rebounds) and Stephane Lasme (11 points, 11 rebounds). The last time UMass had two with double-doubles came on Feb. 19, 2006 at St. Bonaventure.
* UMass had seven players in double-figures, which is believed to be a school-record. Last season, they had six against Savannah State -- which was the first time that occurred since 1991.
* Rashaun Freeman scored in double-figures for the sixth time in as many games this season. It was his 70th career game in 91 games with 10 or more points.
* Freeman had his 33rd career double-double and third this year.
* Coming off his triple-double, Stephane Lasme had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. It is Lasme's 23rd career game in double-figures and third this year. It is also his 10th career double-double and third this season.
* Gary Forbes scored 20 points for the first time at UMass and fifth time in his career. He has been in double-figures all six games this season and 30 times in his career.
* Brandon Thomas scored 10 points after netting nine total points in the first five games this season. Its his 23rd career game with 10 or more points.
* Chris Lowe had his fourth-career double-figure game and first time year.
* James Life tallied 11 points for his fifth double-figure game this year and 20th in his two years at UMass.
* Dante Milligan had a season-best 10 points, his third-career double-figure game.
acksonville - Jacksonville State has all-conference players and junior college All-Americans on its roster, but the player Massachusetts was most impressed with Saturday night was the littlest guy on the floor.
First things first. UMass came into Pete Mathews Coliseum and handed the Gamecocks their worst home loss ever, 100-69.
While the Minutemen were complimentary about the fight JSU gave them, they were most impressed with DeAndre Bray.
The diminutive guard scored only four points, but was continually getting his 5-foot-5 1/2 frame under foot and proved to be the spark that brought JSU to life after it fell behind 22-4 right out of the box.
“He changed the game,” UMass coach Travis Ford said. “That was my halftime talk, telling our guys how to handle that young fellow. Then, I'm telling my guards to play off him and he shoots a 3 and knocks it down.
“The game changed, defensively, it just changed. He's a tough little customer.”
The Minutemen, trying to toughen themselves in these non-conference road games for their most difficult Atlantic 10 games, overwhelmed JSU from the start.
They shot 59.6 percent from the field and put seven players in double figures. The 100 points are the most they've scored in a game since a 102-65 victory over American-Puerto Rico on Dec. 22, 1999. It's the most JSU has given up at home since a 129-109 victory over Bryan College in the 1994-95 season.
“They got us on our best night,” Ford said. “It was our most complete game all around.
“We wanted to get out to a good start, but I sure didn't expect this. I would have expected it, if I knew we were going to play this well.”
UMass scored on its first seven possessions, nine of the first 11 before its first turnover and 11 of its first 16 to open a 22-4 lead just over eight minutes into the game.
Then Bray hit a 3 to stop the bleeding and shake the Gamecocks (1-3) to life. He followed that with two quick steals and delivered the alley-oop pass that produced Amadou Mbodji's first college basket with 9:52 left in the half that got JSU into double figures, 26-11.
“I just know I'm faster than everybody and I just try to play team defense and play hard,” Bray said. “When I came in I just knew I had to play hard because we were down, so I had to take my energy level up.”
Mbodji, a 6-10 redshirt freshman from Senegal, was cleared to participate Wednesday and made his first appearance in a JSU uniform in a foul-shooting situation 3:09 into the game. He promptly was charged with a lane violation.
“I've gone a long time without playing and to come back it was good,” Mbodji said. “I'm glad I'm back on the floor.”
The Gamecocks fought back to within 13 on Tracy Thomas' three-point play with 13:23 to play — the end of a personal 9-1 run by the freshman — but the Minutemen pulled back ahead by 22 going into the final 10 minutes of the game.
Thomas scored all 13 of his points in the second half. Courtney Bradley led JSU with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Dorien Brown had 18 points.
“The first 10 minutes of the game they came out the aggressor,” LaPlante said. “They set the tone and they dominated. I thought the last 8-10 minutes we were more competitive and the first 8-10 minutes of the second, too. To be able to compete and stay with a team of that level, you've got to be good for 40 minutes.
“If there's anything they did learn hopefully it's that to be competitive against the good teams, all facets of the game matter. I told them after the game if they're fortunate enough to win the league and go to the tournament, that's the kind of team we'll see and if you get that chance hopefully you've learned every possession counts.”
