eading into tonight's 7 p.m. game against Savannah State, the University of Massachusetts is officially the No. 46 team in the nation. The Minutemen picked up two points in the also-receiving-votes potion of the Associated Press top 25 which was released Monday afternoon.
The AP confirmed that it was one voter picking UMass No. 24 that gave the Minutemen two points.
It was the Minutemen's first time getting any votes since they received four points in the Jan. 17, 2005, poll after they upset George Washington.
Savannah State doesn't figure to get votes any time soon, even though Minuteman coach Travis Ford called the Tigers potentially the most improved team in Division I. But Savannah State could hold that distinction next year too, and still not be good because they are trying to climb out of a pretty sizable hole.
The Tigers, an independent team, are in the midst of their sixth year in Division I and it hasn't been an easy upgrade. They've been near or at the bottom of the Ratings Percentage Index each of those years.
They were winless in 2004-05 and finished 2-28 last year. That record included a 93-57 loss to UMass, as well as some double-digit defeats to non-Division I schools.
The Tigers won their first five games this season against Jacksonville (the one in Florida, not the team UMass beat Saturday), Mercer, Savannah College of Art and Design, Clark Atlanta and Southeastern. None of those teams are particularly good, or in the case of the last three, even Division I schools. Still, it is progress for Savannah State which before this season won a combined nine games in the last five years against schedules that included Division II and III as well as NAIA teams.
After winning those first five games, the Tigers have dropped their next three starting with an 81/34 loss to Illinois, followed by close defeats to Florida A&M and Jackson State.
UMass is the biggest-name program ever to play at Savannah State, which plays most of its games on the road.
The Minutemen are coming off their 100-69 win over Jacksonville State. In that game UMass jumped out to an 18-2 start and never let the Gamecocks get comfortable.
"The most encouraging thing is the way we came out of the gate and took any confidence they had right out of them," Ford said. "We played good. We didn't play great, but I like the mentality we played with and the aggressiveness. We played to win, instead of playing not to lose. That was a first step and now we have a very important second step against Savannah State, who has great confidence right now."
Ford said he's ignoring the Tigers' history of struggling.
"They're going to have a lot of fans there, which is a very tough environment for an away team. It'll be another test," Ford said. "We've told our guys to forget about what they've thought about Savannah State in the past. They're not only a different basketball team with different players, but they have a whole different mentality. They're a very impressive basketball team."
Etienne Brower remains unlikely to play as he continues to recover from a preseason ankle sprain.
"He's not ready yet," Ford said. "He's not going to play until he's 100 percent ready to go."

AVANNAH, Ga. - Behind a 14 point scoring effort from senior Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.), the UMass men's basketball team handed Savannah State a 72-49 loss in Tiger Arena in front of 3,727 fans. UMass heads into Saturday's nationally televised meeting with Boston College with a 6-1 overall record and is off to its best start since the 1995-96 Final Four season. The Minutemen used a strong first half to take a 42-24 lead at intermission before cruising through the second half en route to the win.
Freeman's 14 points moved him above Julius Erving on the all-time scoring list and he now ranks No. 12 all-time. With 1,378, he is now just nine points shy of Marcus Camby on the points list.
Depth was again key for UMass as senior James Life (Fort Myers, Fla.) had 13 points, senior Brandon Thomas (San Antonio, Texas) scored 10, redshirt junior Gary Forbes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in 10, and freshman Ricky Harris (Baltimore, Md.) tallied nine to lead the Minutemen in the scoring column. As a team, UMass's bench outscored Savannah State's 24-to-12 for the game.
For Thomas, it was the second consecutive game that he scored in double figures after tallying just nine points in the first five games of the season. Thomas tallied eight in the first half, while Harris scored seven of his final nine points, including a rare four-point play, in the first half.
UMass led by as much as 58-27 in the second half, but the Tigers mounted a 9-0 run to cut the lead down to 58-36. The Minutemen responded with a 7-2 run of their own taking a 65-38 lead on a lay-up by Life.
UMass jumped out to an 8-0 run to start the first half and a 7-1 lead to start the second half. Despite senior Stephane Lasme (Libreville, Gabon) having no points and just two rebounds, UMass was able to control the first half and take the big halftime lead.
Lasme, the reigning Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, finished the game with three points, six rebounds, and five blocked shots.
The Minutemen finished the game shooting 24-for-54 (44.4%) and went 19-for-28 (67.9%) from the free throw line. UMass also held a 41-to-38 edge over Savannah State in rebounding.
The Minutemen shot 50 percent in the first half. The 42 points in the first half marked the fourth time this season that the Minutemen scored 40-plus points in the opening frame. UMass also led the entire game for the fourth time this season.
After going 2-28 last season, the Tigers are now 5-4 with the tough loss to the Minutemen. The win for UMass equals its total number of road wins that the Minutemen posted last year.
In the Associated Press poll released earlier this week, UMass was listed as a team receiving votes for the first time since Jan. 25, 2005 after a upset win at No. 7 George Washington.
oach Travis Ford On The Game:
We still need to sharpen up on defense and cut down on the turnovers, but this road trip has been good for us. We got off to a good start tonight, but that can be Fool's Gold sometimes. If you don't get off to a big start, I don't want the players to feel down. I don't want them to panic. As long as we are playing hard, if we are up or down, I want them to feel confident when they are playing hard. I'm still not happy with our team rebounding; I think we are relying on Stephane and Rashaun too much.
Ford On Play From The Bench:
Brandon Thomas and Ricki Harris have played well the last two games and I think with Brandon, especially, he is coming into a comfort zone with his role on the team. It was tough with this team tonight because the way they collapse on defense makes it hard if you aren't shooting well from the outside.
Ford On The Upcoming Boston College Game Saturday Night:
Any team that Al Skinner is coaching is going to be good. It is going to be a big game for both teams and I'm expecting a big crowd at the Mullins Center. We will certainly need the crowd's support. It will be good to be back home. It's going to be a battle; we are going to have to rebound well and shoot free throws well. We're happy to be 6-1 right now and are taking it one game at a time. Tomorrow we will start to really focus on Boston College.
Brandon Thomas On Large Number Of Family/Friends At The Game:
It was great; it's really good to see all my family who lives in the South since I can't see them much. It was really a big help for me and for the other guys who had a ton of family here for the game to support all of us. I remember last year at the George Washington game, several family members traveled there and it meant a lot.
Thomas on the last two games:
I'm just letting the game come to me and I'm just trying to do what I can to help the team. I just want to contribute and understand what my role is on the team. I think we have more depth this year and work hard and work together and I'm happy to be a part of that.
Thomas On Upcoming Boston College Game:
We've been looking forward to this game since we found out about it in the summer. I heard we are going to have a good crowd in the Mullins Center, so we are ready to get to practice and get ready.
AVANNAH, Ga. - University of Massachusetts coach Travis Ford was happy with another road win even if his team had periods of sloppy play en route to its 72-49 win over Savannah State Tuesday.
The victory pushed the Minutemen to 6-1 going into Saturday night's matchup with Boston College. It was the fourth straight win for UMass, with the last two coming on the road, and continues the Minutemen's best start since the 1995-96 team won its first 26 on the way to the Final Four.
The win over the much-improved Tigers (5-4) enabled the Minutemen to equal last season's road victory total. The Minutemen hammered Jacksonville State 100-69 Saturday.
"To get wins, plain and simple," said Ford when asked what he was looking to get out of the two-game road swing. "We struggled on the road last year, and since August we've talked about the importance of winning on the road. At this stage of the season we're looking to win games and learn. It's better to win and learn than to lose and learn."
The Minutemen jumped out to an 8-0 lead and were never threatened by the Tigers, arguably the worst program in Division I basketball the last three years when they posted a 2-82 record which included back-to-back 0-28 seasons.
Rashaun Freeman scored 14 points to lead a quartet of UMass players in double figures. James Life added 13 points while Gary Forbes and Brandon Thomas had 10 each.
It was also a special night for Thomas, who had a sizable family contingent in attendance. Thomas' family lives in Gainesville, Fla., which is about a five-hour drive from Tiger Arena. Of the 3,727 in attendance - one of the largest Savannah State crowds in several years - about 60 of them were a group of UMass fans behind the Minutemen bench.
And it was also a special night for Freeman who reacted in delighted surprise when informed he had passed Julius Erving on the Massachusetts career scoring list.
"That's stunning. It shows through hard work and effort the kind of things you can do," said Freeman, who has 1,378 career points. "I didn't know that I was that close to Dr. J,"
Freeman needed seven points to pass Erving (1,370) and he got them in the first half. He now needs only 10 points to pass Marcus Camby and 16 to climb past Edwin Green into 10th place on the all-time list.
The Minutemen lead hit double digits for the first time at 15-5 with 13 minutes, 10 seconds remaining in the opening half following a pair of free throws by Life. The lead was 11 at 28-17 at the 6:45 mark when UMass scored 10 straight points in a three-minute span to break it wide open.
Up 42-24 at the intermission, the Minutemen opened the second half by outscoring the Tigers 16-3 in the first five minutes.
"We got off to a good start and took care of business," said Ford. "Nothing against Savannah State, but we have the better team. I was never satisfied with our lead, though, and we got sloppy in the second half.
"But, it was good for us to win on the road, and it gave us a chance to play a lot of people," Ford added. "We've got a lot of room for improvement. I was shocked that we beat Jacksonville State the way we did. I thought that would be a close game."
UMass now looks to the Eagles looming at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Mullins Center.
"We didn't talk about it (BC) as a team, but as a staff we did," said Ford.
And the Eagles were certainly on the minds of the players, said Freeman.
"I think we came out to play," said Freeman. "We were not as sharp as we could have been, but I think we're headed in the right direction. Honestly, I think I overlooked these two teams, because I'm looking forward to playing against Boston College."
UMass wound up shooting 44.4 percent for the game (38.5 in the second half), while committing 22 turnovers. However, the Minutemen allowed the Tigers to shoot only 31.7 percent from the floor, and UMass held a 41/38 edge on the boards.
The Minutemen also blocked 11 shots, five by Stephane Lasme who now has 34 on the season.

ov. 28 is a bad day for the Savannah State men's basketball team to play Massachusetts.
UMass crushed SSU 72-49 Tuesday night, a year to the day after hammering the Tigers 93-57 in Amherst, Mass.
But when you are Savannah State, which finished 2-28 last season, any day is bad day to face UMass.
The Minutemen (6-1) are off to their best start since the 1995-96 Final Four season, when they won their first 26 games.
SSU (5-4) extended its losing streak to four games. The NCAA Division I independent Tigers started the season 5-0.
But SSU's four-game losing streak began Nov. 21 with an 81-34 loss at Illinois and the slide continued against UMass.
A season-high crowd of 3,727 at Tigers Arena witnessed the second game ever between the two teams and the first that UMass has played in Georgia against a team from Georgia.
It was UMass' first game in the Peach State since the 1998 NCAA tournament first round, when the Minutemen lost 51-46 to St. Louis at the Georgia Dome.
That was UMass' last NCAA Tournament game.
Against SSU the Minutemen led 42-24 at halftime. UMass was powered by senior center Rashaun Freeman, who scored a game-high 14 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Senior guard James Life added 13 points and senior guard Brandon Thomas came off the bench and chipped in 10 points.
"We were hoping to get some more confidence to win on the road," UMass coach Travis Ford said. "We took care of business. Nothing against Savannah State, but we have a better team.
"I think Savannah State is the most improved basketball team in America. I don't think it's even close. This thing's not going to happen over night. You don't go to Division I and overnight expect to have wins."
UMass blocked 11 shots including five by senior forward Stephane Lasme.
"Those shots that we got off against Jacksonville and Mercer, it's a whole different world (against UMass)," said SSU coach Horace Broadnax. "My expectations for this program are probably too high at this juncture."
SSU was led by junior point guard Joseph Flegler who scored 12 points. Senior shooting guard Javon Randolph was limited to 10 points and senior forward Joshua Obiajunwa added eight points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
"You just cannot go toe-to-toe with a team with that much talent," Broadnax said.

Stephane Lasme defends Chris Linton.

Rashaun Freeman defends Bjorn Bohley.

Gary Forbes tries to catch up with Alvin Edwards on the break.

James Life glides into the basket.
