At home on the road
By Danny Picard, The Daily Collegian Staff, 12/8/2006

The Massachusetts men's basketball team has already proven to be a much better team away from the Mullins Center this year, and with its next three games of the longest road trip of the season (four) against the Blue Devils, Cardinals and Wildcats, there is still plenty of work that needs to be done.

UMass (7-2) won't be playing Duke, but it takes on Central Connecticut State (3-5) tomorrow night at 8 p.m. at Mohegan Sun Arena before heading to Louisville and Kentucky.

Anyone who gambles would be wise to put their money on the Minutemen practicing free throws and working to prevent turnovers before Saturday night. Those are the two factors that almost cost UMass the game on Wednesday over Boston University.

"The two keys are turnovers and free throws," UMass coach Travis Ford said after Wednesday night's win. "And we can control those two areas. If we cut down turnovers and raise our free throw percentages, we're a totally different team. We're going to go from being just average right now to being very, very good."

The Maroon and White outlasted a Terriers 8-0 run to end the game and squeaked by with a 56-54 win at Agganis Arena. UMass turned the ball over 22 times and missed 11 free throws on the night.

"We're doing everything in our power to work on these free throws," Ford said. "We're trying everything. But our guys are going to make them. I don't want to spend too much time talking to them about it, other than just working on them over and over again."

Ford even had his players running laps after every missed free throw during Tuesday afternoon's practice at the Mullins Center. Whether or not the coaching tactic worked remains to be seen, and Central Connecticut State is next on the schedule.

The Blue Devils are coming off a 63-60 win over Delaware on Wednesday night. They are led by senior guard Javier Mojica. He is the team's scoring leader, averaging 20 points per game and shooting 51 percent from both the field and the three-point line. He also averages a team-best eight rebounds per contest.

The Blue Devils have yet to win back-to-back games this season, and in order to keep that trend going, UMass needs a better showing from junior Gary Forbes on Saturday night.

Forbes finished Wednesday's game with only two points, and it marked the first game of the year that he had single digits in scoring. He was 0-for-4 from the field, and scored his only two baskets from the free throw line.

The Minutemen got the victory, but even Ford admits that he never thought UMass could win a game like that against BU with his star transfer scoring only two points.

"We're putting such an emphasis on putting the ball inside that I think it's taking away from Gary a little bit," Ford said. "We've got to get him the ball. We need to run some plays to get him involved, and we're going to work on some things in practice the next couple of days to get him going a little bit because he's too good.

"And it's not necessarily [Gary's] fault," Ford added. "We're putting such an emphasis on getting it to Rashaun and Stephane that for the other guys, it's kind of taking away from them a little bit. But we had to establish that because that is the strength of our team. Rashaun and Stephane are going to carry us, but we've got to get that better supporting role from everybody else."

UMass still trying to find rhythm as it heads to Nutmeg State
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 12/9/2006

The University of Massachusetts basketball team is trying to get on track in a place where few things have gone right for the Minutemen in recent years.

UMass coach Travis Ford said his biggest focus is to get his team playing well again as it prepares to play Central Connecticut State at 8 p.m. Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

The Minutemen (7-2) struggled in their Dec. 2 loss to Boston College and Wednesday's 56-54 win over Boston University.

The Minutemen haven't played well recently in any venue in the Nutmeg State, with five straight losses dating back to 2001. The Mohegan Sun Arena has been a particularly rough spot as the Minutemen endured hard-to-watch, bad losses to Central Connecticut 46-45 in 2002 and 53-52 in 2003.

The Minutemen stayed away from the Connecticut casino for the last two years, but they will try to reverse their luck against the Blue Devils (3-5) Saturday.

"We're not happy with the way we've been playing, starting with the Boston College game," Ford said. "Against BU, there were a lot of things that contributed to us not playing well. At the end of the game we were ecstatic we won. If you're going to have a good season you're going to win games like that. We were not excited about how we played. Hopefully we can improve and get better. We spent (Thursday's) practice just trying to get better."

The Minutemen's problems are familiar ones as turnovers and free-throw shooting have hindered them. Ford said making shots from the line is the harder ailment to fix.

"Free throws are harder than the turnovers. With free throws, even if you're trying real hard you can still miss them," Ford said. "We've tried everything I can possibly think of. We will definitely get better. I don't think there's any question. How quickly? I don't know. I went through a period not talking about it. A lot of times you don't want to get in their heads too much. But I'm trying a different approach now. We need to go up at least 8 to 10 percent."

The Minutemen are 137-for-231 (.593 percent) shooting free throws. Only senior guard James Life, who has made 9-of-10, is better than 65 percent on the team.

As far as turnovers, Ford will find a sympathetic ear in Central Connecticut coach Howie Dickenman. The Blue Devils have 30 more turnovers (126) than assists (96). They opened the season with three straight losses at the John Thompson Challenge in Ann Arbor, Mich., falling to Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Davidson. They bounced back with a win over New Hampshire before falling to St. Bonaventure at home 60-57.

Central Connecticut has won two of its last three games with wins over St. Francis and Delaware sandwiched around a 55-52 loss to Lehigh on the road.

Senior 6-foot-3 guard Javier Mojica leads the Blue Devils with 19.8 points per game, and he also averages eight rebounds. Junior point guard Tristan Blackwood joins him in double figures in scoring with 14 points per game.

Senior forward Obie Nwadike, who was projected to be the Blue Devils' best player, missed two games with an ankle injury and has had a slow start scoring at just 8.3 points per game. He has averaged 7.7 rebounds. Nwadike returned to action Wednesday and had 10 points and 11 rebounds off the bench in the 63-60 win over Delaware. He could return to the starting line-up Saturday.

"Central Connecticut State is talented. They're a lot like BU. There are going to take you off the dribble, which is a weakness of ours," Ford said. "We just need to start playing better."

UMass Goes Big In 79-66 Win Over Central Connecticut State
Freeman, Lasme combine for 42 points, Forbes dishes career-high eight assists
From UMass Athletics, 12/9/2006

UNCASVILLE, Conn. - Going to its `Big' line-up in the second half, UMass used a 23-to-8 run en route to its 79-66 win over Central Connecticut State on Saturday night in the Mohegan Sun Arena. The Minutemen (8-2) exploited it significant size advantage over the Blue Devils (3-6) paced by Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.) and Stephane Lasme (Libreville, Gabon) who combined for 42 points and 24 rebounds. Gary Forbes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Brandon Thomas (San Antonio, Texas) both had big games as well scoring 11 and 8 points, respectively.

UMass shot 50.8 percent for the game - the fourth game this season the Minutemen have done so - hitting 32-of-63 from the floor. In the second half, UMass was on fire hitting 62.5 percent (20-of-32). UMass also protected the ball with a season-low 10 turnovers.

Freeman finished the night with 23 points and 10 rebounds for his fourth 20-point game this year. Lasme also finished with a double-double scoring 19 points and adding 14 rebounds.

The game was close in the first half with six ties including the halftime score of 30 each.

The second half started similarly until UMass deployed its big line-up of Freeman, Lasme, Forbes, Thomas and Life. CCSU was held to just 34 percent shooting in the second half after hitting 52 percent in the first.

Tristan Blackwood of CCSU was the high scorer of the night with 25 points including 6-of-10 shooting from behind the arc. He kept the Blue Devils in the game for much of the second half despite the team shooting poorly.

Central Connecticut started the second half taking a 41-36 lead after Blackwood hit a three-pointer from the wing. UMass pulled even at 41 each on a lay-up by Lasme with 16:55 remaining.

UMass tried to pull away from the Blue Devils as Freeman and Forbes, who finished with a career-high eight assists, combined to put the Minutemen on a 10-to-3 run going up 53-48 before Blackwood hit his fourth three-pointer of the night to pull back within two.

The Minutemen extended their lead to nine 62-53 when Forbes found Freeman off the drive for the lay-in. Life and Thomas then hit back-to-back three-pointers to push the lead up to 13 after another Blackwood lay-up for CCSU.

UMass trailed early in the first half before mounting an 11-to-0 run paced by a pair of deep treys from James Life (Fort Myers, Fla.) to lead CCSU 15-8 at the 14:01 mark of the first half.

The Blue Devils rallied back to tie the game 21-21 on a three-pointer from Joe Seymour with 5:58 remaining.

The first half featured six ties including three in the final six minutes as the teams went into the locker rooms knotted at 30 each.

Freeman and Lasme led the Minutemen with nine points each. Mayben had seven assists (eight for the game) in the first half on UMass' 12 field goals.

Post-game notes
From UMass Athletics, 12/9/2006

UMass continues its best start since the 1995-96 Final Four season with an 8-2 record after 10 games.

* UMass had two players with double-doubles for the second game this season. Both Rashaun Freeman and Stephane Lasme had double-doubles at Jacksonville State on Nov. 25 and again against CCSU. Lasme had 19 points and 14 rebounds. Freeman tallied 23 points and 10 rebounds.

* It was the fifth double-double this season for both Freeman and Lasme.

* For Freeman, it was his 35th career double-double. It was also his fourth game this year with 20 points and 20th time in his career.

* Freeman has socred in double-figures in every game this season and in 74 of 95 career games.

* For Lasme, it was his 13th career double-double.

* With 14 rebounds, he was one shy of his career-high of 15 set at St. Bonaventure in 2006.

* Gary Forbes had a career-high eight assists and just one turnover. Forbes' previous high of four was done for times including twice this year.

* Forbes returned to double-figures after his first game this season without at BU. Forbes had 11 points for his ninth game with 10 or more this season and 33 in his career.

* Chris Lowe made his first start of the season in place of Forbes. It was the first time in 10 games UMass did not start the same line-up.

* UMass had a season-low 10 turnovers and shot 62.5 percent in the second half as they turned the ball over just three time in the second half.

Central Loses Steam
UMass Takes Over With 27-10 Run
By Tom Yantz, The Hartford Courant Staff Writer, 12/10/2006

MONTVILLE -- Leading UMass by four points early in the second half Saturday night, Central Connecticut had visions of another upset of the Minutemen at Mohegan Sun Arena.

But UMass went on a 27-10 dash to wear down the Blue Devils and seize command.

Suddenly the Minutemen - not the Blue Devils - were making shots and rebounding with authority. The result was a 79-66 UMass victory.

"They manhandled us in the paint," Central coach Howie Dickenman said. "[Stephane] Lasme and [Rashaun] Freeman were too big and strong."

Freeman (7-for-7) and Lasme (4-for-5) shot a combined 11-for-12 in the second half, when UMass (8-2) shot 62.5 percent (20-for-32).

Freeman, a 6-foot-9 center, led the Minutemen with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Lasme, a 6-8 forward, had 19 points. Most of their points came on layups or dunks.

UMass outrebounded Central, 37-27.

Central's Tristan Blackwood, hitting 6 of 10 three-pointers, led all scorers with 25 points. Jemino Sobers had 13 for the Blue Devils (3-6).

That the Blue Devils were tied 30-30 at halftime and led 45-41 with 16:15 remaining was noteworthy, considering they were a significant man short. Starting power forward Obie Nwadike wasn't with the team. Dickenman said Nwadike's absence was not a disciplinary action.

"Obie's on a leave of absence," Dickenman said. "It was probably his decision."

The Blue Devils also played most of the first half without Javier Mojica - who entered the game averaging a team-leading 19.8 points - and Chris Winters because of foul trouble.

But Sobers, starting for Nwadike, scored eight points and 6-11 reserve center Ingo Beaudet refused to let the Minutemen dominate around the rim. A sagging 2-3 zone was Central's basic, effective defense.

Blackwood's nine points and Sobers' eight enabled Central to reach halftime tied.

"We were fired up to go out and win the game and play hard for 20 more minutes," Sobers said.

The Blue Devils were seeking to duplicate their impressive victories against UMass in their first two meetings at Mohegan Sun Arena: 46-45 in 2002 and 53-52 in 2003.

A Mojica steal and pass to Blackwood for a fastbreak layup got Central going in the second half Saturday night. Mojica's three-point play put the Blue Devils on top 45-41 with 16:15 remaining.

But the Blue Devils lost their momentum, shooting 1-for-9 after Mojica's three-point play. UMass responded to take a 53-48 lead on Freeman's six consecutive points.

For a 10:48 span, Blackwood's 10 were the only points scored by the Blue Devils.

"We made them start taking tougher shots," UMass coach Travis Ford said. "Now they made some tough shots, but we finally dug down and started rebounding their tough shots."

UMass widened its advantage to 69-55 and capped the 27-10 spurt on Brandon Thomas' three with 5:05 to go.

"I guess we didn't have enough muscle at the end," Dickenman said.

Casino, colleges work together
By Arthur Sherman, The Norwich Bulletin, 12/10/2006

Paul Munick has heard the naysayers before and so has Howie Dickenman.

But the two have ignored outside opposition, creating a very successful relationship between Mohegan Sun's senior vice president for sports and entertainment and the men's basketball coach at Central Connecticut. The latest installment came Saturday night at Mohegan Sun Arena, a 79-66 loss for the Blue Devils against UMass.

Central is now 2-2 all-time against UMass at the casino, where it's also played an exhibition game against the Harlem Globetrotters. Munick praised the school's willingness to bring the team to Eastern Connecticut -- it's about an hour drive from the New Britain campus -- and Dickenman, a Norwich native, has never been one to think there's a problem playing there just because it's a casino.

"I would say that's a bad excuse," said Dickenman, who added going to a neutral site helps schedule an opponent such as UMass for a "home" game. "This is our game day. Saturday morning, we drive down and we have shootaround at like 11 to 12. Then we go to a local hotel, we just kind of lounge around; we'll look at some tape, we'll go over scouting reports. We'll have a team meal at a local restaurant not on the grounds of the casino and then the game starts at (8) o'clock."

Although Munick said a game featuring Central isn't currently on next season's schedule, he expects the relationship to continue. Munick, who was heavily involved with college basketball during his nearly two decades working at Madison Square Garden, also has hopes of bringing in more games.

The casino issue has lost some steam -- Atlantic City hosted Saturday afternoon's game between Temple and Cincinnati, while Las Vegas drew the likes of Kansas and Florida for a tournament last month -- but there are other challenges. Of the state's seven Division I programs, UConn is the closest geographically, but the Huskies already play games off campus at the Hartford Civic Center.

"I'd like to get a little bit more national with local talent," said Munick, who is also open to potentially bringing in teams with Connecticut players, a tactic used in New York.

In the meantime, Mohegan Sun can count on Central and the school is happy to oblige.

"Why people don't want to go there? I don't know," Dickenman said. "I don't understand. That's their prerogative. We're very happy to have the opportunity to play."

Forbes to the rescue
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 12/11/2006

UNCASVILLE, Conn. - Gary Forbes went from being a bad-shooting nonstarter in the first half to savior of the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team in the second half Saturday night.

University of Massachusetts coach Travis Ford tried several combinations early as the Minutemen fumbled their way through the first 26 minutes of the game against Central Connecticut State. He used traditional and nontraditional lineups.

Running out of ideas, Ford sat down both his point guards and handed the keys to Forbes, who had struggled in the win over against Boston University Wednesday and in the first half Saturday. The move turned a four-point Minuteman deficit into a 79-66 win at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Forbes hadn't played much point guard this season before Saturday, because Chris Lowe and freshman Tiki Mayben have run the point most of the time. Ford did use Forbes there in the Minutemen's exhibition game and season opener against Dartmouth while Lowe was suspended.

After Forbes' poor performance against BU, Ford moved Lowe onto the first team alongside Mayben. That meant Forbes was running that point for the Minutemen's second team in practice. His performance then encouraged Ford to try it with just over 14 minutes left in Saturday's game and his team trailing 45-41.

"I liked the way he played there (in practice)," Ford said. "They weren't guarding Tiki or Chris Lowe out on the wing. They'd double or triple the post so I put another offensive threat in there to see what would happen. It worked."

Forbes said he was motivated by the demotion.

"I haven't played hard in the past couple games. Coach didn't start me to motivate me and it did," Forbes said. "I tried to play as hard as possible. When you play hard good things happen."

With Forbes at the point, good things did happen. Until then, he had just two points after shooting 1-for-7 in the first half. But Forbes had four points, two assists and a rebound in a second-half 12/3 run that put UMass ahead for good and overall he contributed nine points and five assists in the final 14 minutes.

Forbes finished with 11 points, a career-high eight assists and just one turnover as the Minutemen had a season low 10 turnovers, including just three in the second half.

"I told Gary he needs to be a stat-stuffer. He needs 12 to 15 points, 8 to 10 rebounds, seven or eight assists, one or two blocks, one or two steals," Ford said. "That's the type player he is. He's not one dimensional. I've been too good to him. You've got to produce from this point on."

Not willing to tamper with success, Ford didn't change his lineup from the 14:08 mark until he inserted walk-on Matt Pennie with 26 seconds left and the game wrapped up.

Rashaun Freeman turned to Ford at one point to ask for a breather and was turned down.

"You're not tired," Ford shouted at him and later said "I told them 'We were down five and you guys got us up 10, we're going to stick with you. You don't get a rest.' "

Freeman and Stephane Lasme each had double-doubles to lead the Minutemen. Freeman had 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Lasme scored 19, grabbed 14 boards and blocked three shots.

UMass (8-2) returns to action at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Louisville.

Tristan Blackwood led Central Connecticut (3-6) with 25 points.

The Minutemen led for most of the first half but never by a comfortable margin. A jumper by Chris Winters of the Blue Devils with 29 seconds left in the first half tied the game 30-30.

Blackwood converted a layup right away to start the second half as Central Connecticut took a lead and then extended it to five and held the momentum until Ford moved Forbes to point guard.

Important victory in Uncasville
By Matt Vautour, Daily Hampshire Gazette Staff Writer, 12/11/2006

UNCASVILLE, Conn. - It may have been just another game, a win over an inferior opponent that will be easily forgotten weeks and months down the road. But it didn't feel that way Saturday night.

For the first four weeks of this season, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team lost to the two teams it was expected to lose to and won the games it was supposed to win. That doesn't sound like much but it's progress. It's been a long time since the Minutemen made it through a season without a particularly damaging defeat.

The mileposts on UMass' journey into obscurity in recent years were the bad losses: Holy Cross, Fordham, Central Connecticut, Lafayette, Fordham again, Hartford, Central Connecticut again, Fordham yet again, Davidson, Richmond. There were plenty of optimism-snuffing defeats and Saturday's game had the potential to be added to that list.

Coming off a lucky-to-get 56-54 victory over Boston University Wednesday, the Minutemen were flat again for the first 26 minutes against Central Connecticut State and appeared to headed for a loss that would have deflated a lot of the season's optimism.

But something changed in the second half. In previous years the Minutemen would get down and too often put "Why is this happening to us?" expressions on their faces.

On Saturday, that seemed to be replaced by an attitude of "We're not going to let this happen to us." Instead of fading, they fought. If the attitude carries over UMass could be much better prepared for their next two games at perennial powers Louisville (Wednesday) and Kentucky (Dec. 22).

Whether Gary Forbes' move to point guard either fueled the uprising or just happened to be the thing that sparked it, the Minutemen came to life down the stretch. They didn't do just enough to hold on by four or five points, they took the game over and dominated en route to an easy win.

UMass fans had been happy to ignore Forbes' reputation at Virginia as a very good player who sometimes fades into the background. The hype surrounding him as the Minutemen's next great player was more fun to focus on. But they saw Wednesday what Cavalier fans occasionally experienced Forbes disappeared as the Minutemen barely beat BU.

Ford saw it too, and rather than let it continue, demoted Forbes from the starting lineup.

"I've been too nice to these guys. Playtime is over. I've been coddling them too much, trying to figure out how to play 10 or 12 guys," Ford said. "Not any more. You produce or you don't play. If you don't things right, I'm going to let you know it."

The tactic worked. The UMass fans who made it to Uncasville saw the Gary Forbes that Virginia fans were sorry to see go. In the last 14 minutes of the game, he was the best player on the floor, not just scoring, passing and rebounding, but leading. That's the player Ford hoped he'd be when Forbes first arrived.

"Coach said, 'Great teams play well in December,' " Forbes said. "We're trying not just to be a good team, but a great team."

UMass took a step toward that Saturday.
