MHERST - After giving his team three days off for Christmas, University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Travis Ford began Wednesday's practice with a team meeting.
As the Minutemen get set to begin the winter break portion of their schedule tonight at 7 p.m. against Yale at the Mullins Center, Ford gave each player and coach a chance to offer his thoughts on the season as UMass winds down the nonconference portion of its schedule and begins Atlantic 10 play next weekend.
"I thought it was a good time of year to do that because all it is right now is us on the basketball court," Ford said. "There's no academics, no students on campus. We spend more time together in the next month than you do anytime. I thought it was a good time to air out any concerns or anything they wanted to talk about. It was great. It was fun, very interesting. I think we got a lot out of it. It was positive."
Chief among Ford's concerns was consistency and more specifically his team's lack of it.
"I'm happy to be 9-3, but I think we've played only one or two really good basketball games in that stretch. There is a lot of room for improvement, which is good, you want room for improvement this time of year," he said. "Our goal was not to be the best team we could be in the first half of the year. It was to have a good record and get through it. I don't think we've gotten even close to playing our best basketball. It's about sustaining our effort every second. We've been playing in spurts a lot. There's a lot of room for improvement individually."
Senior guard James Life said the players found the meeting beneficial.
"It lasted about an hour and a half. Coach talked about the potential we have. We still have a ways to go to reach that potential, but we know we can be unstoppable," Life said. "Coach told us this is the best time of year because we can just focus on basketball. It's like being in the NBA. You can just play basketball and not worry about anything else."
They'll start by worrying about Yale.
After playing nine of its first 12 games outside of Amherst, UMass closes its nonconference slate with two at the Mullins Center. After tonight's game, the Minutemen play Miami at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs arrive in Amherst at 2-7 with one of their wins coming in their season opener against Allegheny, a non-Division I opponent. They've lost six of their last seven with a win over American University on Dec. 9. Yale hasn't played since a 66-65 loss to Hartford on Dec. 11.
Junior guard Eric Flato leads the Bulldogs with 14.6 points per game, while senior wing Casey Hughes has scored 10.8 points to go with his team-best 6.4 rebounds per game.
Ford warned against overlooking Yale.
"If we take any approach other than this is the next game on our schedule, we could easily lose this basketball game," said Ford. "We're due. They gave Dayton a heck of a game."
Life didn't know much about Yale as the Minutemen weren't due to watch film of the Bulldogs until Wednesday night. He said UMass just needed to focus on itself.
"With the talent and ability we have, watching film is important, but it's not the most important. If we do what we're supposed to do we'll beat anybody," he said. "We'll beat Yale, we'll beat Miami, we'll go through our conference play and smack everybody."

MHERST, Mass. - Senior guard James Life (Fort Myers, Fla.) scored 16 points and senior forward Stephane Lasme (Libreville, Gabon) added eight points, seven blocks and 16 rebounds as UMass defeated Yale 78-69 on Thursday night in the Mullins Center. Lasme's 16 rebounds was a new career-high as the Minutemen improved to 10-3 overall this season. With its 10th win of the season, UMass equals its earliest calendar date for a 10th win in school history.
Along with Life and Lasme, Tiki Mayben (Troy, N.Y.) and Brandon Thomas (San Antonio, Texas) also scored in double figures. Mayben hit for 10 points, while Thomas scored 11 on the night.
The Minutemen shot 49 percent for the game hitting 29-of-59 shots, while Yale (2-8) was just 21-for-65 from the floor (32 percent).
Eric Flato led the Bulldogs scoring a game-high 22 points, while Casey Hughes added 12 points.
The game was nip-and-tuck throughout the first half after Yale battled back from a 12-point deficit to tie the game at 30 each with 2:20 in the period. UMass went on a 10-2 run capped by a Mayben three-pointer with 0.2 seconds remaining before halftime to take a 40-32 lead.
Both teams traded baskets in the first part of the second half before UMass proved too strong and pulled away for the win.
In that second half, dominated in the paint with 22 rebounds. UMass went on a 16-5 run as they took a 60-54 lead with 9:15 left to 76-59 with 1:27 remaining. In that spurt six different players scored showing the overall balance.
Mass equaled its earliest date in school history for the 10th win of the season as they moved to 10-3 on Dec. 28, 2006. They also won their 10th game on Dec. 28, 1991 as they moved to 10-2 that time.
* James Life reached double-figures for the second game in a row and eighth time in 13 games this season with 16. He had nine in the first half. It was his 23rd career game at UMass with 10 or more.
* Stephane Lasme had a career-high 16 rebounds for his 18th career game with double-figure rebounds. He had nine in the first half alone.
* Lasme had a Mullins Center defensive rebounds record with 15.
* Rashaun Freeman reached double-figures for the 12th time in 13 games this season and 76 in 98 career games with 12.
* Tiki Mayben scored in double-figures for the second time in his career with 10. He had 12 in his collegiate debut against Dartmouth.
* Brandon Thomas scored in double figures for the fourth time this season with 11. It was his 26th career double with more than 10.
* UMass jumped out to a 10-0 lead to start the game in the first 5:04.
* Etienne Brower drew his first start for UMass at small forward. Chris Lowe also returned to the starting line-up for the second time this year and first since the Central Connecticut game (12/9).
* Travis Ford turns 37 years old tomorrow.
Travis Ford On Where The Team Is:
"I thought we were solving things a little bit. You look at Louisville and Kentucky, we don't turn it over much at all. That's this basketball team, I tell you, its hard to figure out. This is one of the most challenging things that I have ever been a part of. Where this team is at, day-by-day, which buttons to push and the traditional things that work (we are working on). But we are 10-3 you have to be glad when you look at the upsets of tonight with Duquesne beating Boston College and college basketball - anything can happen and we are 10-3. I told our guys, I was disappointed and that it was one of the worst displays of basketball that I have seen in a while, it wasn't fun to watch for anyone to watch. But I glad we won now with that said the reality is that you can't keep playing like that.
We have seen what we are capable of beating in Louisville. Most of you didn't see us at Jacksonville State, it was one of the best performances I have seen at Jacksonville State. Then you see this. We pick and chose when we feel like playing. That will catch up to you if you don't start understanding what's keeping you from reaching your potential. Now they just have to do something about it. Sometimes we figure it out but then we kind of revert back.
MHERST -- Turning 37 today, University of Massachusetts coach Travis Ford still has a thick head of hair without a trace of gray.
His locks were good enough to land the role of Danny O'Grady, a point guard whose University of Washington team, aided by a ghost, defeated none other than UMass for the national championship in the much-panned 1997 film, "The Sixth Man."
Last night's actual UMass team put the perfect hair to the test as the Minutemen committed a whopping 30 turnovers. Fortunately for Ford, the opponent was Yale (2-7 coming in), and the Minutemen were able to persevere for a 78-69 victory.
"It was one of the worst displays of basketball I've seen in awhile. It just wasn't fun to watch for anyone," said Ford, his voice raspy from a cold and several moments of fury.
UMass thus completes the '06 portion of the 2006-07 season with an impressive 10-3 record, but still several question marks. With the exception of the victory against Louisville (9-4), all of UMass's wins have come against teams with losing records, and seven of the teams have won fewer than one-third of their games.
There is an almost tangible feeling of having underachieved, despite UMass's best record since the Final Four season of 1995-96. Unlike recent versions of the Minutemen, this team has won every game it has been expected to win, but no one feels the squad is playing anywhere near its potential.
"We've got to find a way to fix things," said James Life, who led UMass with 16 points. "We're not going to get very far in the A-10 with 30 turnovers."
After hosting Miami Tuesday, UMass begins its Atlantic 10 slate Jan. 6 at La Salle.
UMass did have enough to win last night thanks in part to Life's perimeter prowess (4 for 8 from behind the arc), and the rebounding of Stephane Lasme (career-high 16 boards).
"They've just got better players than we do," said Yale coach James Jones.
Still, the Minutemen head into the new year realizing they need to improve. "We pick and choose when we feel like playing," said Ford. "That will catch up to you."
Ford admits to being mystified by this team. He never questions his players' effort, but has been dumbfounded by the lack of execution at times.
"It's hard to figure this team out," he said. "That's one of the most challenging things I've ever had in coaching . . . trying to figure out which buttons to push. The traditional things don't seem to work. But we're 10-3."
Ford's exasperation seemed to peak late in the first half during a timeout with UMass up by just a point, despite Yale shooting 6 for 26. He walked out to the foul line for a moment of solitude. The team was ahead, but not playing well -- emblematic of too much of the season.
Yale hung tough for much of the second half, trailing by just 6 at the midway point. Guard Eric Flato (game-high 22 points) led the way.
Ultimately, UMass was too strong inside, and came away with the win, and much to ponder.
MHERST - UMass 78-69 victory over Yale at the Mullins Center last night produced a legion of New Years resolutions from the dissatisfied Minutemen.
UMass improved to 10-3 while the struggling Bulldogs, back from a 16-day exam period, fell to 2-8.
UMass shot 49.2 percent (29-of-59) from the floor, hit an efficient 8-of-16 from 3-point range and enjoyed a 49-34 edge in rebounding. That combination looked like the recipe for an easy win.
But the Minutemen offset those numbers with a season-high 30 turnovers and committed 25 fouls that resulted in 22 Yale points from the line, making this victory much harder to attain.
Shooting guard James Life, who led UMass with 16 points, felt the team took several steps backward because of overconfidence and mind-bending displays of sloppy basketball. Life pledged to have those and other problems rectified when the Minutemen host the Miami Hurricanes on Tuesday night.
I think guys came into the game a little nonchalant, thinking we are playing Yale with a losing record and not a great reputation, said Life. Yale didnt play an aggressive style of defense, they werent in the passing lanes and they still managed to get 30 turnovers on us. We have to find a way to fix things, because we are not going to get very far in the A-10 with 30 turnovers a game.
Stephane Lasme was the antidote for the turnover epidemic that plagued the Minutemen. With center Rashaun Freeman (12 points) limited to 18 minutes on the floor because of foul trouble, Lasme crashed the glass for a career-high 16 rebounds to go with eight points and seven blocks.
Lasme, who averages 8.7 rebounds per game, set a Mullins Center record with 15 defensive boards.
They went at (Freeman) and got him in foul trouble, which was smart, and they (battled) to keep it close, said UMass coach Travis Ford. Theres no question that if (Lasme) didnt have those rebounds - and he had a lot of big rebounds when we needed them - you would have been looking at a different outcome.
UMass jumped to a 14-2 lead on the 3-point shooting of Life and Etienne Brower. But the Minutemen allowed Yale to regroup with a 22-10 run.
UMass point guard Tiki Mayben sparked a 10-2 run in the final two minutes of the half to give the Minutemen a 40-32 lead at the break.
Yale, behind the outside shooting of guard Eric Flato (22 points), opened the second half with an 11-4 run to make it 44-43. UMass Brandon Thomas came off the bench to bookend a 14-4 run to give the Minutemen a 70-56 lead with 4:30 remaining.
Its one of the strangest games Ive been a part of in a while, said Ford. Just the number 30 speaks for that mess, and Im glad to get out with a win.
MHERST - Against a better opponent, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team might have been in trouble Thursday night. The Minutemen turned the ball over a season-high 30 times, shot 52 percent from the line, survived foul trouble by Rashaun Freeman and had long stretches of sloppy play.

Minuteman coach Travis Ford said Wednesday that he wanted to see how his team played after getting three days off for Christmas. He wasn't happy.
"I'm glad its over with. We played about as good as I felt," said Ford who has been battling a cold. "I'm glad to get a win and get it over."
The turnover total was a Mullins Center record, crushing the previous high of 26 which came against Manhattan in 1994. Stephane Lasme and Tiki Mayben each had six turnovers.
"The number 30 says enough about all that mess," Ford said. "I thought we were solving it a little. At Louisville we didn't turn it over much at all. At Kentucky we didn't turn it over that much. That's this basketball team. It's hard to figure this team out. It's hard to figure which buttons to push because the traditional things don't seem to work.
"We're 10-3 and we're glad to win when you see some of the upsets like Duquesne beating Boston College (Thursday). College basketball today, anything can happen.
"I told our guys that I was disappointed in the way we played and it was one of the worst things I've seen in a while, but I'm glad we won. We could have lost easily," Ford continued. "We've seen what we're capable of being. We're capable of beating Louisville and then you see this. We pick and choose when we feel like playing. That will catch up to you. Luckily it hasn't caught up to us yet."
UMass high scorer James Life said the Minutemen may have overlooked the Bulldogs.
"I think guys came in a little nonchalant playing Yale, who has a losing record and doesn't have a great reputation," Life said. "I think we took a step backwards tonight. I don't think Yale played a very aggressive-style defense, but they still managed to get 30 turnovers. We need to find a way to fix things. We're not going to get very far in the Atlantic 10 with 30 turnovers in a game."
The Minutemen's offensive rebounding helped make up for a lot of the mistakes as they recovered 15 of their 30 missed shots. Lasme led UMass with a career-high 16 rebounds but only one of those came on offense. He added eight points and seven blocked shots.
"If he doesn't come up with those rebounds, we might be looking at a different outcome," Ford said. "He's got to do that every night."

UMass returns to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Miami at the Mullins Center.
The Minutemen scored the first 10 points of the game and led 14-2 when Ford made wholesale substitutions with 13 minutes, 49 seconds remaining in the first half.
At that point, Chris Lowe, who had replaced Mayben in the starting lineup, picked up his second foul, came out of the game and did not return for the rest of the half. UMass struggled without him as Mayben was erratic at first coming off the bench.
"The worst thing that could have happened was that 10-0 run." Ford said. "We didn't handle that too well. They thought this was going to be easy."
Yale used an 11/3 run to make it close and eventually tied the game at 30-30. But Mayben whose struggles led to some of the first-half problems helped correct them as he and Dante Milligan carried the team in a 7-0 UMass run.
After Casey Hughes cut the lead to 37-32, Mayben made a 3-pointer at the buzzer while being fouled. He missed the free throw and UMass led 40-32 at halftime.
The Minutemen couldn't put the Bulldogs away until late as Freeman picked up his fourth foul 2:27 into the second half.
Ford said repeating this effort Tuesday could be disastrous.
"I would hope we'll play better against Miami. If we don't, it could get ugly quick," Ford said. "Hopefully this got it out of our system. Better to do it and win."
MHERST - The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team's two most highly touted newcomers watched the opening tip from the bench as coach Travis Ford shuffled his starting lineup before Thursday's game with Yale.
Freshman point guard Tiki Mayben and junior Gary Forbes both have struggled lately. Sophomore Chris Lowe, who has played most of the team's crucial second-half minutes, moved into the starting at point guard, while junior Etienne Brower made his first start as a Minuteman in place of Forbes.
"Tonight wasn't experimenting. Chris Lowe and Etienne have been playing good and deserved to play," Ford said.
Brower, who missed the first seven games with an ankle injury, was happier to be healthy than in the starting lineup.
"I haven't been able to play healthy in a while," Brower said. "Tonight was one of the first times I've felt close to 100 percent because of my ankle."
Brower finished with six points on two 3-pointers and four rebounds. Lowe was a rare steady presence as the only Minuteman with more assists (five) than turnovers (three) and added three points.
Forbes, who Ford called an Atlantic 10 player of the year caliber talent in the preseason, had four points and five rebounds in 12 minutes.
"I wasn't doing this to motivate him. Other guys need to play. You have to earn your playing time," Ford said. "You have to give me a reason to play you."
Mayben had 10 points, four assists and six turnovers.
![]() Rashaun Freeman was limited to 12 points, drawing most of the Yale defensive attention. |
FOULS - The Minutemen sent Yale to the line 28 times, one of many numbers that frustrated Ford.
"Every time we turned around they were on the free-throw line which plays to their strength," Ford said. "When you foul that much it means you're not focused. It says you're a step behind trying to recover from a mistake. We made a lot of mistakes."
The Minutemen, who shot free throws better against Kentucky Dec. 22, reverted back to their struggles at the line going 12-of-28.
NEXT UP - The Minutemen remain at home to face Miami at 7 p.m. Tuesday in their final nonconference game of the season. The Hurricanes are 7-6. They host Nebraska Saturday before coming to Amherst. Miami upset then-No. 21 Georgia Tech 90-82 Dec. 3, but has lost two straight to Binghamton and Louisville.
JACK O'NEILL REMEMBERED - The Minutemen had a moment of silence prior to the game for longtime public address announcer Jack O'Neill who died on Dec. 15.
OPEN AUDITIONS - The Minutemen are holding auditions in early January to become the Mullins Center's new public address announcer. Anyone interested should contact Todd McDonald at 413-545-9596.
MISCELLANEOUS - Stephane Lasme's 15 defensive rebounds were a Mullins Center record, breaking Rashaun Freeman's two-year old record of 14.
Former Minutemen forward Jeff Viggiano, who is playing professionally in Sweden was at the game. Viggiano, who sported military-style, flattop hair throughout his playing career, took some good-natured teasing for his new floppy look.
Hopkins Academy boys basketball coach Fred Ciaglo was a contestant in the halftime-shooting contest. He hit the 3-pointer to earn a night in a Boston hotel, but missed the half-court shot for the new car.
